Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 497: Chapter 492: The Queen’s Voice

Location:Outer Ring, Vel’thari Containment — Main Fort / Primary approach

Date/Time:Emberwane, 9942 AZI — Day 345–365

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

The dead took ten days to prepare.

Nobody had ever brought bodies out of the Harrowing. In every culling cycle for millennia, the students who fell stayed where they fell — in the tunnels, in the dark, left for the containment to consume the way it consumed everything else. Their families received a name on a list. A formal notification. A date. Nothing to bury. Nothing to hold. Nothing to bring home and put in the ground and visit on the days when the grief needed somewhere to go.

Jayde stood in the main fort’s central cavern and looked at the rows.

One hundred and ninety-seven, laid out on the stone. Brought in from every corridor and medical station and collapsed tunnel section where they had fallen. Some Eden had held in the cold passages behind the fort. Some had been pulled out of rubble. Some were in the condition that the soldiers who recovered them would never describe to anyone, ever, for the rest of their lives.

She knew every face. Every name. Every hometown she had learned during the preparation weeks, when she had walked the perimeter and spoken to every squad leader and made herself memorize them, because a commander who did not know the names was not a commander. She was an accountant.

A sister’s name. A mother’s cooking. A girl somebody had meant to court when he got home.

They were going home. All of them.

”We build caskets,” Jayde said.

Zhong turned his head. ”Caskets.”

”The fabricator has the alloy. Sealed containers, one per soldier, sized to fit. They come out with us when the portal opens. Every one of them goes back to their family.”

The instructor said nothing for a while. Fifteen years teaching combat at that Academy, and dark brown eyes holding something Jayde couldn’t put a name to — the expression of a man hearing an idea that should have existed for a thousand years and never had.

”That isn’t how the Harrowing works.” Not an argument. He was working through it. ”The fallen stay. It has always been the fallen stay.”

”Then it stops being always.” Her voice was quiet. Not the Commander’s. The woman’s. ”They held the line. They died holding it. The least I can do is make sure there’s something for their mothers to put in the ground.”

Zhong looked at the rows for a long moment.

Then he nodded. The nod of a man whose understanding of what a commander owed had just been permanently revised, and who had the grace not to say so out loud.

The fabricator built caskets. Alloy-lined, sealed, measured. The machine that had produced two thousand crossbows and eight ballistas and twenty-four siege lances now produced the last thing an army needs, which is a way to carry its people home.

***

The soldiers washed them.

Not by order. Jayde never gave one. They simply came — in pairs and threes, finding the people they had shared a firing pocket with, a shift with, a shield wall with, kneeling on stone that had been scrubbed clean for the purpose and doing the work with their hands.

They washed the amber out of hair. They straightened collars. They set crossbows across chests and folded hands over the stocks, with the careful wordless tenderness of people who understood that this was the final thing they would ever be able to do for someone who had stood beside them, and who wanted very badly to do it right.

Eden worked the line for eight days without being asked.

She had a list of her own. Every soldier who had come onto her table and not come off it, and what had killed them, and — this was the part she did not say aloud to anyone — the thing she would have done differently if she had possessed one more pair of hands, or one more hour, or a surgical suite that existed on a planet she was never going to see again.

She washed them, and she checked her list against the faces, and she did not let herself look away from a single one of them, because looking away was a kindness she had decided she had not earned.

Zhi stayed coiled at her throat the entire time, scales gone, a flat gray that Eden had never seen on the serpent before, pulsing the same thing down the bond over and over.

[I’m here. I’m here. I’m here.]

***

Zheng Wei came looking for a name.

She had gone into her third-pocket shift on the opening night of the war with steady hands, fired forty bolts, fumbled the forty-first on a cord slick with amber, and been saved from a Scythling at two meters by a man in the position beside her whose face she had seen for perhaps a quarter of a second.

She had never learned his name. There had never been time. And afterward, in the way of those things, asking had felt like admitting she hadn’t asked already.

He was in the fourth row.

She found him because she recognized the shape of his shoulders, which was a thing she had not known she knew. A squad leader from First Company told her the name. Wen Houyi. Dead on the first night, four hours after he’d put a bolt through the relay hub of a creature that had been about to open her.

Zheng Wei knelt down and washed him and told him her name, out loud, in a cavern with three hundred other people in it, because he had never learned hers either.

***

Jayde built the wall.

Not the carving — she assigned engineers for that. But the decision, the design, the location. The primary approach’s inner wall, where the fighting had been worst, where First Company had held for sixty days, where every name on the list had been earned within a hundred meters of the stone it would be cut into.

One hundred and ninety-seven names. The chisels were Charling mandible edges set in alloy handles — the last thing the harvest produced, and the only thing it made that was not a weapon. The stone was hard. The work took six days. The bioluminescence caught in the grooves and held there, so the names glowed faintly in the tunnel’s permanent dusk.

Seven names headed the wall, because Jayde had insisted the order be chronological and those seven had gone first.

Tao Lin. Fa Qiu. Wen Houyi. Chen Mao. Bai Ruixue. Song Jiahao. Li Yanming.

Twenty-three of them belonged to Third Company. Ruifen came alone, at a time of night when the corridor would be empty, and read all twenty-three, and did not touch the stone, and went back to her people.

A woman from Third Company came the next morning and pressed her forehead against the name of the soldier who had held the other half of her shield wall, and breathed.

That was all. She just breathed.

The sound of it was louder than anything that corridor had held during the entire war.

Nobody asked her to move. Nobody spoke. The wall held what none of them had words for.

***

Jayde addressed the army on Day 362.

They gathered in the main fort’s cavern. Every soldier, every medic, every logistics runner, every person who had carried a load during the war. Sixteen hundred had held the corridors.

Fourteen hundred and three were standing.

They looked different — not from the students who had walked into the Harrowing eleven months ago, but from the soldiers who had fought three weeks ago. The hollowness had receded. The wounded were closing, mandible scars pulling into raised white lines that would be on these people at their weddings and at their children’s naming days and in the ground with them at the end.

They stood straight. They held their crossbows at rest. They looked at Jayde the way soldiers look at the person who brought them through a thing that by every reasonable measure should have killed all of them.

The mantis stood beside her. The chitin cracks had closed. The blade-arms were still chipped and would stay chipped.

”Three days,” Jayde said. ”The portal opens in three days. When it does, you walk out of here. Into the light. Into a world that has no idea what you did.”

The cavern was silent.

”Nobody above the seal knows a Charling army came for the seal. Nobody knows that sixteen hundred people held a line for sixty days against something that has never happened in the history of this containment. Nobody knows that one hundred and ninety-seven of you died to keep the stone above your families intact.” Her voice stayed level, and underneath the level something moved, and every soldier in the cavern recognized it, because they had all seen it — in the corridors between waves, in the small hours, in the moments when the Commander stopped being the Commander and became the woman who knew their names. ”We are bringing them home. Every one. That has never been done before either.”

Some of them were crying. Nobody looked away.

”Let the Academy misunderstand. What you know and what you are does not require their recognition. You held. You held when the Scythlings came floor to ceiling. You held when the Ravagers learned. You held when the Siegebreakers dissolved your shields and the Lancers came through the ceiling and the Praetorians cracked the floor under your boots. You held when the carriers came, and you killed every last one of them, and the seal is intact because you were standing in front of it.”

She put her palm on the mantis’s head-plate. It hummed.

”I will not forget your names. I will not forget the names on that wall. And when the time comes — when what we built down here matters somewhere that isn’t a hole in a mountain — I will find you.” She looked at them. Company by company. Face by face. ”This doesn’t end when we walk out. What we built here is not something you leave in a tunnel. It’s something you carry. And when I call, I need you to answer.”

She let it settle. The promise and the warning, both.

”Three days. Rest. Heal. Pack your gear. We walk out together.”

She stepped back. The formation held.

Then Meifen’s voice, from the front of First Company:

”Commander on the line.”

The salute was not one Jayde had taught them. They had invented it somewhere in the sixty days and never told her. Crossbow raised, butt to the shoulder, bolt aimed at the ceiling.

Fourteen hundred and three crossbows came up as one, and the sound of it went through the cavern like a single heartbeat.

***

Day 364. The last night.

Jayde sat in the primary approach. The corridor was clean. The chitin cleared, the walls scrubbed, the shield pockets stripped down for transport. The kill corridor that had eaten an army was a tunnel again, its purpose served, its geometry going back to the stone it had been cut from.

The names glowed on the wall.

She was alone. Eden was asleep. Meifen was asleep. Even the mantis was resting at the corridor mouth, sensory pits dimmed to their lowest register.

The silence was total. In eleven months underground, she had never once heard anything like it. No vibration. No footfall. No distant hum of an ecosystem going about its work. Ten days now, and the containment had been holding its breath.

She had assumed the colony was broken.

***

Something came into her mind.

Not through cultivation. Not through the bond with the mantis. Not through any channel she recognized or could have named — a direct contact that arrived the way sound arrives in a room that has been quiet far too long. Softly. And filling everything.

You held.

It was not a voice. It was a weight. An intelligence old enough that the concepts it thought with had worn smooth at the edges, arriving as meaning rather than language, unmediated, the way the mantis spoke through vibration and warmth — but scaled to something she had no measure for.

The mantis came awake at the corridor mouth, every pit flaring, locked on her face with the frantic attention of a predator that had detected something enormous and could not see it.

Jayde did not move.

You are the Queen, she thought.

I am what is left of her.

***

You held, the presence said again. Not accusation. Not anger. Assessment — one intelligence measuring another and finding it sufficient. I needed you to.

You attacked us.

Yes.

You coordinated it. Every wave. You watched us build the corridors and you sent them in anyway.

Yes. A pause that was not hesitation. It was the shape of something enormous choosing where to begin. You counted one hundred and ninety-seven. I felt every one of mine. There is no number I could give you that you would accept as real, and if I gave it to you it would not mean what it means to me, because you would hear a number and I felt each one leave.

Jayde’s hands had gone very still on her knees.

Then why?

***

The answer did not come as an argument. It came the way the mantis gave her things — whole, at once, an entire understanding pressed into her at a pressure she could barely hold.

Her people had not come here.

They had been here. Ordinary. Small. Beetles and mantids and wasps in a barren stretch of ground nobody wanted, going about lives too brief and too simple to be worth recording. And then something enormous had fought something else enormous, and torn a hole in the world, and pushed a wound down into the earth, and built a lid on top of it.

Nobody had asked them. They had been the ones standing there when the roof came down.

What was under the stone remade them. Not quickly. Over a span the Queen could not render into any unit Jayde would understand. It took their bodies apart and put them back together around a single function, and the function was: eat the wound.

Your people think we are the prisoners here, the presence said. We are. That is the smallest part of it, and it is the reason I am speaking to you and not to them. We are the prisoners. And we are the lock. And we are the only thing keeping the wound from waking, because we are eating it, and we have been eating it since before your species had a word for a year, and we will still be eating it when everything you are about to walk out into has been forgotten by everyone.

There is no year in which this stops.

***

My children cannot leave, she said. If they went out, they would eat until there was nothing organic left standing between here and the sea, and then the wound would have nothing feeding on it, and it would wake, and then it would not matter what any of us did. They cannot leave. They cannot stay in the numbers they want to be. They cannot be too few, or the thing below opens its eyes.

So every fifty years your children come down into my house and kill mine.

And I let them.

The presence held there for a moment, and Jayde understood, with a clarity that made her chest ache, that this was the part the Queen had been carrying alone.

I count. I have always counted. I set the ratios. I decide which broods come to term and which chambers go quiet. I decide which castes are made and how many and what they are shaped for. That is the whole of my power, and it has only ever been the power to decide who does not get to exist.

I have killed more of my own race than every culling in your Academy’s history laid end to end. Not in anger. In arithmetic. Because if I do not, the seal fails, and everything above dies, and mine die anyway — in the open, in the light, with nothing left to eat.

Your people call me the enemy. Your people are the tool I use.

***

Jayde could not speak. Not in thought, not out loud. The mantis had crossed the corridor without her noticing and pressed its head-plate hard against her hip.

Then what happened this time? she managed.

The pressure came faster than the count could hold. The presence turned, somehow, the way a mind turns toward a thing it does not want to look at directly. Something entered the dark that had never been in the dark before. Something my blood read the way it reads the wound waking. The broods answered it. They answered it faster than I could set a ratio against, and when the density passed what the stone can hold, the instinct in every one of them stood up at once and said: out.

Jayde sat with that.

She had walked into this containment eleven months ago with eight primordial seals in her body and a sealed Crucible Core and a nature that the oldest records in the Lower Realm forbade from ever crossing the boundary.

She had known, in the abstract, what she was to this ecosystem. She had not once considered what she might be to the thing that had to keep the ecosystem in balance.

I did this.

You were born, the Queen said. And then you were put down a hole. Those are two different acts and only one of them was yours.

I could have —

No. Something in it that was almost gentle, and was more terrible for it. I am not telling you this to lay it on you. I am telling you because you asked, and because you are the first mind in this containment I have been able to say any of it to, and I have wanted to say it for a very long time.

I could not stop them. I rode the wave because I could not do anything else with it. And I will tell you the worst thing I have ever thought, because you have earned it and because I would like it to exist somewhere outside my own head before I go back to sleep.

When they went for the seal — I wanted them to reach it.

Not to take your world. I have no use for your world. I wanted my children to see the sky once. Once, before it killed all of them. I have made millions of them, and not one has ever looked at anything.

***

They don’t think, Jayde said. It was not a question.

Not one. Not ever. And there it was, underneath everything, the thing that had been under the whole conversation from the first contact. They hatch. They eat. They die. Nothing in them wonders. Nothing in them is lonely. Nothing in them knows that the dark is dark.

I have envied my own children every day for longer than your species has had writing.

I am the only one of us who has ever had a thought, and the only thing thinking has ever given me is the ability to grieve for a race that cannot grieve for itself. They died for sixty days at your wall, and not one of them was afraid. I was afraid. I was afraid the entire time, for all of them, and there was no one to be afraid with.

Jayde discovered that her face was wet.

She had held for sixty days. She had held through the caskets and the washing and the wall and the speech and her own list of names, and she had not cried once, and what broke her open at the end of it was an insect grieving in the dark for children who had never known they were alive.

***

The mantis, she thought.

The presence changed. Not brightened — there was nothing in it that could brighten — but something in it eased, the way a hand unclenches.

My one success. I sent it to the dead place. The zero field, at the boundary, where the colony’s chemistry cannot reach. I starved one node of my own children of every signal that makes a Charling a Charling, and I held it there, and I waited to see whether anything would grow in the gap.

Something did.

I made one of my children capable of suffering so that one of my children could see. I have never decided whether that was love.

Jayde put her hand flat on the mantis’s head-plate. Warm. Steady. The creature that had come through a tunnel wall to save her before it had any reason to, and had carried her through a war, and had never once asked for anything.

It chose me, she thought. Not you. It chose.

Yes. And there was pride in it, unmistakable, the first clean thing in the entire contact. That is why I am asking instead of taking. It chose, and the choosing was its own, and I will not reach into it and turn it. It is the only free thing my race has ever produced and I would rather lose it than own it.

Take it with you.

I’m taking it either way.

Then let me see. And now it was not a queen or a nexus or an intelligence older than the seal. It was something very tired asking for one thing. The link between us will hold across the stone. Let it walk out into the light and let me look through it. Let me know what the sun is. Let me have that, and I will go back down and set the ratios and count my children into their graves for as long as this lasts, and I will do it without wondering anymore.

Jayde looked at the wall of names glowing in the dark.

Yes, she thought. You’ll see everything it sees.

***

The presence began to withdraw. Slowly, the way a tide goes out — not vanishing, receding, pulling back down into the depths where it had lived since before the seal existed.

One more thing, it said. The quiet. These last ten days.

You did that.

I pulled them back. All of them, to the Deep Ring, and held them there. A pause. You were burying your dead. I know what that is. I have never been permitted to do it, but I know what it is.

I could give you ten days of silence. It was the only thing I had.

Jayde closed her eyes.

Do not tell them I can think, the Queen said, from very far away now. Your Academy calls this management. If they learn there is a mind under their mountain, they will start calling it war, and then they will come down here to win, and they will kill enough of us that the wound wakes, and everything ends because someone needed to be the victor of it.

Let them keep their insects.

The last thing that came was not language. It was a feeling — one Jayde had felt exactly once before, in a tunnel after a fight, through a vibration in chitin that had gone up her spine before she had any framework for it.

Gratitude. And underneath the gratitude, quieter and much larger:

Satisfaction. The knowledge that something worth doing had been done, and that the cost of it had been correct.

Then the contact was gone, and the silence came back, and the corridor was empty.

***

Jayde sat in the dark with the mantis and the names and did not move for a long time.

Somewhere below her, under a great deal of stone, something enormous and entirely alone was going back to sleep, having decided that a borrowed look at the sun was worth more than everything it had spent trying to reach it.

The mantis hummed. Low. Deep. The sound that meant everything and nothing and I’m here.

”I know,” Jayde said. Her voice came out wrong, and she let it. ”I know. We’re going home.”

She put her forehead against the warm chitin and stayed there while the names glowed on the wall behind her.

Day 365 was tomorrow.
