Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 473: Chapter 468: More Pregnancies

Location:Zhū’kethara — Verdant Shelf / Bondseer’s Chamber

Date/Time:Ashbloom, 9942 AZI — Month 6

Realm:Demon Realm

The offerings appeared on the third morning.

Ren found them at the eastern entrance of Zhū’kethara, laid on the stone threshold in careful arrangement: braided cord, wildflowers from the Verdant Shelf, clay bowls of grain from the first lowland harvest, small figurines shaped from dark loam. The offerings faced east, toward the rising light, toward the direction the old prayers had always faced. Toward Ala.

Nobody had organized this. Nobody had announced it or suggested it or distributed instructions. The demons of Zhū’kethara had simply begun to pray, the way water finds its level, the way roots find the earth. The rite had worked. Children were coming. And the people who had been waiting thousands of years for a sign that the world remembered them had responded with the oldest language they knew.

Faith.

By the fourth morning the offerings had grown. Families came before dawn, laying their gifts in the growing collection at the threshold. A miner from the lower galleries left a chip of crystal that had taken him months to cut. A weaver from the mixed-blood district left a cloth dyed in the old colors — deep green and gold, the ancestral shades that the modern demons had forgotten the meaning of but still recognized in their blood. A child, too young to understand what was happening but old enough to feel the joy in the adults around her, left a smooth stone she’d found by the underground river. The stone was unremarkable. The gesture was not.

Ren stood at the threshold on the fifth morning and watched a truemated pair approach. The female carried a bowl of soil from the Verdant Shelf — dark, rich, alive with the energy the rite had fed into it. She set it at the threshold with her truemate’s hand on her shoulder. Her eyes were closed. Her lips moved in the old words, the prayer to Ala that every demon child had been taught and that most had stopped saying millennia ago because the prayers had gone unanswered for so long that speaking them felt like shouting into emptiness.

The prayers weren’t empty anymore.

Ren didn’t touch the offerings. He didn’t move them or question them or instruct anyone to stop. The offerings were genuine. The faith behind them was real. And whatever the truth of the rite — whatever forces had actually moved through the dancers and the earth and the truemated bonds — the demons’ understanding of it as sacred was not something Ren had any desire to correct.

They were right to pray. They just didn’t know how right they were.

Tharion brought the numbers that afternoon.

”Seven,” the Pathsinger said. ”Of the twelve pairs who danced the rite. Seven are pregnant.”

Seven. Seven demonesses carrying life in bodies that had been empty for eight thousand years. Seven truemate bonds resonating with the new-life frequency that the Common Path hadn’t carried in living memory. Add the five who’d conceived before the rite — the three pure-blood pregnancies confirmed after Soravael’s birth, and two others who’d conceived in the weeks following the awakened program’s early work — and the number was twelve.

Twelve pregnancies. In a realm that hadn’t produced a natural birth in eight thousand years until Soravael.

”The bond-strength correlates,” Tharion continued. His deep green-gold eyes held the focused attention of a man who could feel patterns on the Path but couldn’t always name them. ”The seven who conceived had the deepest truemate bonds. Kelyra confirmed it. The bond between each pair and the land beneath them was strong enough to carry whatever the rite channeled.”

”And the five who didn’t?”

”Bonded. Connected. But the depth wasn’t there yet. Kelyra believes the bonds can deepen with time and cultivation. She wants to schedule them for a second rite in three months.”

”Do it.”

Word had already spread. By the time the announcement reached the lower galleries, the number had been inflated from twelve to twenty. By the time it reached the farming settlements in the lowlands, it was thirty. Ren didn’t correct the rumors. The truth was extraordinary enough.

The people’s response was not surprise. It was confirmation. They had prayed. They had danced the rite. They had given their bare feet to the earth and their voices to the ancient rhythm and their faith to whatever power moved through the bond between demon blood and living soil. And the power had answered.

Three hundred pairs requested the rite within the week.

They came from everywhere. Truemated couples in the mountain who hadn’t danced in the first rite. Pairs from the farming settlements in the lowlands, walking for days with offerings in their hands and hope in their faces. Pairs from the outlying communities who’d heard the news through the network of traders and messengers that connected the demon realm’s scattered population. Old pairs whose bonds stretched back millennia. Young pairs whose truemate bonds were still fresh.

They came with offerings. Clay figurines. Wildflowers. Braided cord in the old patterns. One couple brought a stone from the mountain where they’d first felt the truemate bond form — carried it for three days across hostile terrain, because the stone was from the place where their bond had begun and they wanted the rite to know where they came from.

They came with prayers. The old words. The names that demon children had been taught for thousands of years without knowing whether the names still listened. Ala. The Codex. The ancient ones whose presence had faded from the world so slowly that most demons had stopped believing they’d ever been real.

The prayers were back. The prayers were LOUD.

”Three hundred,” Tharion said. The number carried weight. ”Not all of them are ready. The bond-depth varies. Some pairs are close to the threshold. Others will need months of cultivation and closeness before the rite can reach them.”

”Then we tell them that,” Ren said. ”Honestly. The rite is ancient and sacred, and it works through the bond between truemated pairs and the land. Some bonds are ready. Others need time. The time is not a punishment. It’s preparation.”

”And if they ask why some bonds are deeper than others?”

”Because some pairs have been tending their bond for longer. Because the bond is a living thing and it grows with care. Because the earth responds to depth, not desperation.” Ren paused. ”Zhuvara should lead the sessions. She understands the rite. She performed it before the Sundering. The people trust her.”

”Zhuvara and Kelyra together. The Crystalsinger explains the rite. The Bondseer explains the readiness. Between them, every pair gets an honest answer.”

”An honest answer and a path forward. ’Not yet’ is not ’never.’ Make sure every pair understands the difference.”

***

Kelyra’s chamber had become a pilgrimage.

The Bondseer worked in the eastern wing, a wide stone room she’d transformed into something between a shrine and a workshop. The bond-charts on the walls were drawn in colored chalk on slate panels, tracing the visible architecture of truemated connections the way a cartographer traces rivers. The floor was marked with paired circles where couples stood while Kelyra read what lay between them.

Ren watched from the doorway as a couple took their places in the circles. Long-bonded. Thousands of years together. The male stood with his hands clasped behind his back, the copper-tinged eyes of an Inferno bloodline fixed on Kelyra with the intensity of someone who had waited a very long time for this moment. The female’s hands were pressed against her stomach, unconscious, instinctive, as if her body was already rehearsing for what she hoped would come.

Kelyra moved between them. The Bondseer’s inherited sight flickered behind her green-gold eyes, reading the bond as a physical structure — the depth, the resonance, the way the connection between the pair reached into the earth beneath them and drew from whatever ancient source the rite required.

”The bond between you is strong,” Kelyra said. Her voice was warm. Reverent. She treated every assessment as a sacred act, because to her, it was. The bonds were not measurements. They were expressions of something older than any of them understood. ”The depth is close. Not at the threshold the rite requires, but close.”

”How close?” the female whispered.

”Months. Perhaps less. The bond deepens with shared cultivation and closeness. Tend it. Feed it. Spend time together on the Verdant Shelf where the earth is richest. The land will meet you when you’re ready.”

”And the rite will work?”

Kelyra looked at the female with eyes that held thousands of years of inherited Bondseer wisdom and a faith that predated the Sundering. ”The rite has always worked. It’s our readiness that comes and goes. Yours is coming.”

The couple left. The female was crying — not from grief. From the specific, overwhelming emotion of someone who’d been told that the thing she’d wanted for years was close. The male walked beside her with his hand on her back, steady, present, the touch of a man tending the bond without knowing that’s what he was doing.

Kelyra met Ren’s eyes across the chamber. The Bondseer looked tired. Three days. Forty-seven pairs assessed. Fourteen ready. Thirty-three close or approaching.

”Fourteen for the second rite,” she said. ”Plus the five originals. Nineteen pairs.”

”And the thirty-three?”

”Time and faith.” She paused. ”The hardest part is the conversation. Telling someone their bond isn’t deep enough yet sounds like telling them their love isn’t deep enough. The two aren’t the same, but the distinction is difficult when you’ve been waiting this long.”

Ren understood. Love and readiness were not the same thing. A couple could love each other with everything they had and still need time for the bond to reach the depth the rite required. The distinction mattered. Getting it wrong meant shame where there should be patience.

”Zhuvara can help with that,” Ren said. ”She understands the rite’s requirements from the ancient tradition. Frame it as preparation, not failure. The couple is tending their bond for the rite. The rite will come when the bond is ready.”

”A pilgrimage,” Kelyra said softly. ”Not a test.”

”Exactly.”

***

The Verdant Shelf had changed.

Ren walked the eastern slope where the twelve pairs had danced, and the evidence of what had happened was written in the earth. The soil was dark. Rich. The color of loam that had been worked by hands that understood it, except no hands had touched this earth. The land had darkened itself, feeding on the energy the dancers’ feet had pressed into it.

Flowers grew where the inner circle had turned. Small, white, with petals that caught the ambient essence light. They shouldn’t be blooming — the season was wrong, the altitude was wrong. They were blooming because the land wanted them to.

Beyond the dance site, the effect was spreading. Down the eastern slope, across exhausted stone that had been barren since the Sundering, dark soil crept. Centimeters per day. Outward. The land was healing from the dance site like a wound healing from the inside.

The first harvest was two weeks away. The farms in the lowlands were producing. Not abundantly. Not yet. But the grain was growing, and the demon realm was going to feed itself for the first time in millennia without relying entirely on trade.

Ren stood on the Shelf and felt the Common Path beneath his feet. The new-life frequency hummed through the network — twelve pregnancies and one birth introducing a resonance the Path hadn’t carried in living memory. Faint. A whisper in a population ofmillions. But the Path amplified whispers, turning life-events into communal resonance, telling every demon who stood on the soil in a language older than words: life is returning.

The beast behind his ribs stirred. Briefly. The massive presence that had been sleeping twenty hours a day lifted its head at the new-life frequency and pressed against the Path’s resonance with something that felt like recognition. As if the beast had been waiting for this specific signal and was answering it the way roots answer water.

Then it slept again. Deeper than before. The energy expenditure of that brief resonance cost something Ren could feel in the thinning of the beast’s presence. It was spending itself. Deliberately. On something that made the new-life frequency intensify for the moment of contact, as if the beast’s response was amplifying the signal. Feeding the cycle that the rite had reopened.

He didn’t understand it. Not fully. Nobody did. The awakened had pieces. The modern demons had faith. Somewhere between the pieces and the faith lay a truth that was older than any of them and patient enough to wait for understanding.

Ren stood on the greening earth and let the Path hum through him. Twelve pregnancies. Seven from the rite. Three hundred pairs requesting. Fourteen ready for the second rite. The land healing. The farms producing. Soravael growing. The beast sleeping.

The realm was recovering. Thread by thread. Prayer by prayer. The offerings at the eastern entrance grew each morning. The old words came back to demon lips that had been silent for millennia. The faith that had survived thousands years of unanswered prayers was being rewarded in the only way that faith ever is: not with understanding, but with evidence.

Children were coming. The land was healing. The ancient rite was working.

They didn’t need to know why. Not yet. The why could wait for minds sharp enough to unravel it. For now, the what was enough: bare feet on dark soil, truemated bonds reaching deep, the Crystalsinger’s voice opening a door that had been closed for so long the demons had forgotten there was a room on the other side.

The weight on his shoulders hadn’t lessened. But for the first time in ten thousand years, the weight was growing something.

The wind carried the scent of new growth across the Shelf, and somewhere in the lower galleries, a woman who’d been waiting eight thousand years for a child pressed her hands against her belly and felt, for the first time, the flutter of something that wasn’t hope.

It was movement.
