Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 494: Chapter 489: The Escalation, Part 3

Location:Outer Ring, Vel’thari Containment — All fronts

Date/Time:Flamefade, 9942 AZI — Day 325-335

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

It rounded the corridor’s curve behind its Ravager escort, and the primary approach stopped breathing.

Horse-sized. Low-slung, wide, built like something that had been designed by an engineer rather than grown by an ecosystem. Stag-beetle mandibles heavy enough to grip and crush formation-reinforced stone.

And the spray chambers. Twin bulges behind the thorax, translucent at the stretched points, visibly pulsing with the superheated compound that made this caste the thing that walls were afraid of.

The escort Ravagers split to the corridor’s edges. Clearing the center. Making room.

The Siegebreaker sprayed.

The compound hit the primary approach’s outer shield wall — the curved alloy plates that had held against everything for forty days — and ate through them in six seconds. The alloy didn’t bend. It dissolved. Edges curling inward, metal running like wax off a tipped candle, the corruption-laced solvent unmaking the molecular structure of the shields that sixteen hundred soldiers had put their lives behind.

The squad behind the wall scrambled backward through the pocket mouth. The barrier operator slammed his palm onto the anchor-stone.

The formation barrier rose. The Siegebreaker sprayed again.

The compound hit the barrier and hissed — the solvent reacting against the ambient essence that powered the working, two energies fighting each other in a fog of steam and shredded light.

The barrier held. Formation work resisted what physical shields couldn’t.

Deng Hao pressed his palm flat to the anchor-stone and felt the whole structure vibrate up his forearm. His hands were steady. His eyes were not. Twenty-six years old. Grade 5. He had entered the Harrowing as a student and had become, across sixty days of training and forty of war, the man who stood between a Siegebreaker and everyone behind him and whose entire contribution was raising and lowering a wall on command.

The spray stopped. The chambers needed thirty seconds to recharge.

Thirty seconds.

”Barrier down!” Meifen’s voice.

Deng Hao dropped it. The heavy crossbow team behind him fired — three bolts at fifteen meters. The first cracked the dorsal plate. The second widened the crack. The third went through it.

”Barrier up!”

The barrier rose. The Siegebreaker sprayed. The compound hit stone instead of flesh.

Thirty seconds. The rhythm. The dance. Up when the spray came, down when the teams fired, up before the recharge finished.

Deng Hao’s world narrowed to his palm on the anchor-stone and the timing that kept people alive. A second late and the spray hit the team. A second early and the team had nothing to shoot at. He counted heartbeats, because counting was more reliable than thinking, and thinking was a luxury barrier operators didn’t get.

The team killed the first Siegebreaker in four volleys. Twelve bolts. The spray chamber ruptured on the last hit — the superheated compound detonating inside its own body, the chemical eruption blowing the Ravager escorts off their feet and spattering the corridor walls with burning residue that went on eating stone for a full minute afterward.

Nobody cheered. The second one was already coming around the curve.

***

The ballista crew at the primary terminus had been waiting eighty days for this.

Three soldiers. Two crank operators — a woman named Zhao Fen and a man named Wei Tong — and the aimer, a Grade 4 named Peng Deshi who had been the Academy’s best cultivation archer before the Harrowing and had transferred every targeting instinct he owned into a weapon that fired a bolt the length of his forearm.

The Siegebreaker entered his sightline at eighty meters. It filled the corridor. The escorts flanked it. The chambers pulsed.

”Crank,” Peng Deshi said.

Zhao Fen and Wei Tong threw their weight into the mechanism. The coiled alloy springs compressed. The tension mounted. The frame groaned against its floor bolts.

”Hold.”

Seventy meters. Sixty. The chambers were glowing now, the recharge building toward discharge.

Peng Deshi waited. Forty days of watching Ravagers die to light bolts he wasn’t allowed to spend, and he had never once fired the weapon.

Fifty meters.

”Release.”

The bolt hit center mass with kinetic energy that no chitin in the containment could absorb. The impact wasn’t a crack. It was a detonation. The shaft punched through the dorsal plate, through the anatomy behind it, and out the ventral surface to bury itself in the corridor floor beneath the creature. Both spray chambers ruptured at once — superheated, pressurized, suddenly released — and the blast threw the Ravager escorts into the walls and sent a wave of burning compound washing across the stone.

The Siegebreaker collapsed. The corridor shook.

”Crank,” Peng Deshi said, already reaching for the next shaft.

Third Company’s western corridor took the heaviest bombardment.

The wider geometry that had made the western approach difficult during the Ravager waves became catastrophic under the Siegebreakers. The extra width gave them room to spray from angles the formation barriers couldn’t fully cover. Compound splashed around barrier edges. Hit the walls. The stone melted, ran, and re-set in glassy folds, and the tunnel’s structural integrity degraded a little more with every discharge.

Ruifen’s company fought behind barriers that were dissolving underneath them.

”Barrier six is losing integrity!”

Ruifen assessed. Barrier six covered the third pocket. If it failed, the pocket was open to direct spray. Five soldiers. Five crossbows. The difference between the western corridor holding and the western corridor going.

”Abandon pocket three. Fall back to four. Merge with Squad Twelve.”

The squad evacuated. Thirty seconds later, the spray took barrier six entirely — the anchor-stone crumbling, the ambient essence that powered the working dispersing into the corrupted air with a sound like a held breath letting go. The compound hit an empty pocket and melted the abandoned shields into slag.

Behind pocket three, bolted to the floor where a Praetorian was supposed to walk into it, a siege lance emplacement went with the pocket. The compressed essence-springs cooked off inside their housing. The frame folded in on itself.

Ruifen watched her corridor shrink. Twelve firing pockets down to eight. Then seven. Every lost barrier was a lost position, and every lost position compressed her company into a tighter space with fewer angles.

She held. Because holding was what Jayde had asked her to do, and because the medical station behind her corridor had eleven wounded who couldn’t be moved, and because the alternative was letting something eat through the stone until it reached the seal.

***

Li Shenwei rebuilt anchor-stones under fire.

The formation-crafting instructor had been alone in the Mid Ring for two months with a corruption-tainted mandible wound before Jayde’s people found him, and he had spent every day since teaching students to cut working-channels into rock. Now he crawled the corridors between waves with a satchel of blanks and a chisel and re-seated the anchors that the solvent had eaten.

He worked fast, and he worked ugly. There was no time for elegant channel geometry. He cut the minimum viable working, seated it, keyed it to whoever was standing closest, and moved to the next one.

”That one’s rough,” he told Deng Hao, tapping a fresh anchor-stone with the flat of the chisel. ”It’ll hold nine days. Maybe eleven. Don’t be gentle with it — gentle doesn’t buy anything. Use it until it fails and then shout.”

”And then?”

”Then I’ll cut another one.” Shenwei was already moving. ”That’s the job. They eat walls. I make walls. As long as I make them faster than they eat them, we’re winning.”

He was not making them faster. Everyone in the corridor knew that, including him.

He kept cutting anyway.

Day 330. The Chorus clusters reached the perimeter.

Twelve sonic-warfare units broadcasting coordination frequencies from behind the assault lines, and the army transformed under them.

Ravager packs stopped adapting individually and started adapting collectively. A tactic that failed in the primary approach was never attempted in the secondary. A weakness found at Base Three was being exploited at Base Five inside the hour. The castes stopped behaving like separate creatures pushed forward by the same instinct and started behaving like a single organism with twelve minds and no fear of losing limbs.

The Charlings had been mindless insects during the Scythling wave. They had been competent soldiers during the Ravager waves.

Now they were an army with a general.

Jayde countered anyway. She rotated tactics between bases on no schedule at all — shifting firing patterns, changing barrier timing, repositioning shield walls so that whatever the Chorus had learned about a corridor was obsolete before it could be applied to the next one. The defense became a moving target.

The Chorus adapted. She adapted faster. The tempo climbed until every day was a compressed argument between two intelligences that had never met and never would.

***

The not-sleeping caught up with her on Day 331.

She was giving an ammunition redistribution order at Base Three when the corridor tipped fifteen degrees to the left and stayed there. She finished the order. The corridor came back. Nobody noticed except the mantis, which stopped walking and would not start again until she had eaten what was in her hand.

Twice more that day, she gave an instruction she had already given an hour earlier and got the same answer twice from a runner too well-disciplined to say so.

The mantis started refusing turnings. She would signal for the Base Four approach and the creature would carry her to the sleeping chamber instead and settle onto its belly in the doorway with its blade-arms folded, which was the closest thing to an argument a Charling could construct.

She got two hours. It was not enough. It was more than she had taken in a week, and the difference showed in the orders she gave afterward.

One hundred and thirty-one dead by Day 331. One hundred and fifty-six by Day 333.

***

On Day 334, the breach at Base Four.

A Siegebreaker dissolved the formation barrier at connecting tunnel seven. The anchor-stone melted before the operator could get his palm off it. The Ravager pack behind the Siegebreaker poured through the gap into the support tunnels — the passages behind the fighting line where the reserves waited and the wounded were carried and the runners sprinted with ammunition on their backs.

Jayde heard the alarm from two corridors away.

The mantis turned and went from standing to full sprint in a single stride. The tunnels blurred. Two corridors. Three. The sound of close-quarters fighting ahead — not crossbow volleys, but the chaotic, desperate noise of a defense that had already broken. Screaming. Chitin on alloy. Cultivation strikes detonating in a space too small for them.

She came around the corner, and the mantis didn’t slow.

Sixteen Ravagers and a Siegebreaker. The Siegebreaker was spraying the walls, widening the passage for the ones behind it. Two squads of Fourth Company backed against a hasty shield wall, firing while the ceiling above them ran like candle wax. A soldier on the ground, not moving. Another dragging the first backward one-handed and shooting with the other.

The mantis hit the pack from behind at full sprint, and its blade-arms unfolded.

Left arm took the nearest Ravager’s head off clean. Right arm bisected the one beside it diagonally, the strike passing through the thorax-abdomen junction, the halves separating and falling in different directions. It plowed through the pack, blade-arms working in the alternating rhythm that had been designed at the species level for exactly this — killing Charlings in tunnels. Left. Right. Left. Each strike precise. Each strike final. Most of them barely had time to register a threat before the threat was already through them.

Jayde fired the heavy crossbow from its back. The bolt hit the Siegebreaker’s spray chamber at fifteen meters. The chamber cracked. The compound detonated inside the creature’s abdomen and sprayed burning solvent across the corridor. The heat washed over the mantis’s chitin.

The creature flinched. Didn’t stop.

Thirty seconds. Seventeen dead.

Fourth Company stared at the corridor their Commander had just emptied. The woman on the Charling, blade-arms dripping amber, the heavy crossbow still smoking in her hands.

”New barrier. Double-anchor. Get Shenwei down here.” Her voice level. The Commander’s voice that didn’t shake. ”And your wounded to medical. Now.”

She turned the mantis and rode for the next crisis. Behind her, Fourth Company started dragging corpses and pretending their hands weren’t shaking.

***

Day 335. Night. The quiet between waves.

One hundred and eighty-nine dead. Three hundred and four wounded. Eleven hundred and seven still able to hold a firing position.

Jayde sat the mantis in the junction behind the primary approach. The corridor was empty. The clearance teams had finished an hour ago. From the chitin yard came the sound of the grinding wheels, still turning, because the yard never stopped, because the bolts fired tomorrow had to be pulled out of what died today.

The mantis hummed. Low. The sound it made when the fighting stopped and the quiet started and the creature remembered that it was alive and tired and that the woman on its back was both of those things too.

Then the stone trembled.

Not the Ravager vibration. Not the Siegebreaker boom. This came up through the floor as a single event and then again, spaced, patient — the interval of something enormous walking without any reason to hurry. The tunnel walls cracked along the seams. Dust sifted from the ceiling mesh. The bioluminescent light didn’t flicker; it pulsed, once for every impact, as if the containment’s own biology was flinching in time.

Every soldier on the perimeter stopped moving at once. Not from discipline. From the older thing underneath discipline — the response of prey that has heard something too large to fight and understood, before any conscious thought arrives, exactly what that means.

Jayde counted the intervals and did the arithmetic.

Nineteen had left the staging caverns. Twelve had died in the Mid Ring, under her collapses and in her spike pits and drowning in her confusion zones.

Seven were still walking.

”Siege lance crews to their emplacements,” she said. ”All of them. Now.”
