Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 492: Chapter 487: The Battle, Part 1

Location:Outer Ring, Vel’thari Containment — Main Fort Perimeter

Date/Time:Cinderfall, 9942 AZI — Day 285, 80 days remaining

Realm:Lower Realm, Doha

The stone sang before the Scythlings arrived.

A vibration so low it lived below hearing — in the teeth, in the ribs, in the marrow of every bone pressed against the tunnel floor. First Company felt it come up through their boots. Some of them looked down. Some of them looked at each other. Nobody spoke. The vibration said everything that needed saying.

Something was coming. Something vast. And it was close.

Jayde sat the mantis at the junction behind the primary approach. The creature had gone rigid, every sensory pit locked south. The ganglion heat that normally warmed its chitin had drained inward — energy pulled to the core, coiled, the biological preparation of a predator that had already decided what the next few hours would cost.

Two hundred meters down the southern tunnel, the bioluminescence flickered. Not the slow tidal pulse the Outer Ring’s ecosystem maintained. A flicker. Something between the light and the corridor, interrupting it. Something moving. Something filling the tunnel floor to ceiling.

The light went out.

”Barrier down,” Jayde said.

The formation barrier at the primary approach dropped. Behind it, the kill corridor stretched two hundred meters into the dark — shield pockets staggered left and right, crossbow positions loaded and braced, the ballista at the far terminus aimed straight down the throat of whatever came through.

For three heartbeats, the corridor was silent.

Then the Scythlings hit.

***

The sound broke first.

Not the defenses. Not the soldiers. The sound. A wall of noise that arrived with the leading edge of the flood and did not stop — thousands of chitin legs shrieking across stone, mandibles clicking in overlapping arrhythmia, the wet slap of bodies colliding as the creatures behind drove the creatures in front forward with the pressure of a river past its banks. It was not the sound of individual organisms. It was the sound of a species arriving, and it filled the corridor the way water fills a pipe. Completely. Pressurized. Nowhere to go but forward.

The pale amber flood poured through the barrier gap. Floor to ceiling. Wall to wall. Scythlings scrambling over each other, blade-arms extended, sensory pits locked on the warmth of human bodies crouched behind curved alloy. The corridor’s bioluminescence caught the chitin and turned the flood into a river of dull gold, flowing, surging, filling every cubic meter of space between the walls.

Meifen’s voice cut through it.

”First pocket — fire!”

Twenty-five bolts hit the leading edge at fifteen meters. The volley punched a line of holes through the flood. Relay hubs shattering. Scythlings dropping mid-stride, bodies going slack with no steering left in them. Amber fluid sprayed in arcs that caught the light like rain and came down warm on the shield rims. The dead fell. The flood climbed over them without breaking pace.

”Second pocket — fire!”

The second volley came from the right wall. Then the third from the left. Then the fourth. Alternating. Crosscutting. Each volley ripping into the flood from an angle the previous one had left open, every bolt finding chitin because at that density, missing was a mathematical impossibility. The corridor became a killing ground where geometry did the work that individual aim could not. Overlapping fields of fire turned two hundred meters of tunnel into a grinder made of stone and alloy and the rhythmic discipline of soldiers drilled until loading a crossbow was as automatic as breathing.

The Scythlings died. Row on row. The bodies piled. The living climbed the dead and kept coming. More behind. Always more behind. The corridor floor vanished under chitin — six inches, then a foot, then two, the living scrambling over the fallen with the frantic energy of organisms that had no concept of retreat, only advance.

The heat built. That was the part nobody had drilled for. Thousands of bodies packed into a stone tube, each one carrying the internal warmth of an organism running at full metabolic burn, and the corridor turned into an oven. The air thickened. Sweat ran under armor and had nowhere to evaporate to. The soldiers in the forward pockets fought stripped to the underlayer, plates loosened at the straps, drinking between volleys because the alternative was going down from the heat before the mandibles ever reached them.

In the third pocket, Zheng Wei fired her fortieth bolt.

Grade 4. Twenty-seven years old. Steady hands — the kind that turned a shooter into a killer. On the forty-first, her fingers slipped. The draw cord, slick with the amber that had sprayed across her position, slid through her grip. She fumbled. Fumbled again. The Scythling climbing the body pile in front of her pocket reached the crest, blade-arms extended, mandibles wide.

The soldier beside her — a man whose name she would learn later, or would not — put a bolt through its relay hub from two meters.

The creature dropped across her shield. She wiped her hands down her armor. Reloaded. Fired.

Nobody thanked anyone. There wasn’t time.

+++

The secondary approaches ignited a quarter of an hour behind the first.

Second Company on the eastern flank caught a thinner wave. The feeder tunnels had bottlenecked the vanguard there, splitting it across four passages, and the crossbow teams handled it with the grim efficiency of people firing into targets that could not dodge and would not stop.

Third Company on the western flank caught the worst of it.

The western tunnels were wider. The flow was denser. The kill corridor there ran only a hundred and fifty meters, and the shield pockets were spaced further apart. The geometry was weaker. Jayde had known it during construction. She had reinforced it with extra squads, extra ammunition, extra shields.

It wasn’t enough.

The flood hit Third Company’s corridor the way water hits a drain that is too small. The Scythlings compressed at the entrance, stacked, and the pressure of everything behind drove the ones in front into the shield walls with a force that made the alloy plates scream against their ground-spikes. The first wall buckled inside the hour. Not broke. Buckled — the curved plates bending inward under the sustained weight of hundreds of bodies pressing forward with the mass of an army behind them.

Ruifen saw the buckle.

Third Company’s commander. Grade 4. The woman who had been a terrified straggler three months ago, and who did now the thing that separates a soldier from a survivor.

She stepped into the gap.

Not with a crossbow. With her cultivation. A Flamewrought essence strike that hit the Scythlings pressing the buckled plate with enough force to vaporize the first three and throw the next ten backward into the flood. The wall rebounded. The shield bearers slammed the plates home against the spikes. The crossbow teams resumed firing before the echo finished.

Ruifen’s hands were shaking when she stepped back behind the line. Her reserves were thinner by a fraction that mattered. She had spent cultivation — the thing Jayde had told them to hold for emergencies.

This had been an emergency. The wall had nearly gone on the opening night of a war that would run for months.

She filed the fear the way Jayde had taught her. Not dismissed. Filed. There would be time for fear later.

If there was a later.

***

Jayde rode the lines.

The mantis carried her through the connecting passages at speeds that turned the tunnel walls into a smear of stone and cold light. Primary approach — ammunition check, casualty count, shield integrity. Eastern flank — holding, minimal losses, expenditure manageable. Western flank — wall repaired, Ruifen straining, reserve ammunition diverted forward.

At every position, the same calculation. The same terrible arithmetic that commanders perform when a battle is too large for heroism and too important for hope.

How many bolts remaining. How many bolts per kill. How many kills needed. How long until the next wave.

At the primary terminus, Instructor Zhong Huian stood beside the ballista frame with his arms folded and said nothing at all.

Fifteen years teaching combat. Entry Inferno-tempered, the highest cultivation in the Lower Realm, and he had not thrown a single technique. He had spent the night doing what Jayde had asked him to do, which was to stand where the soldiers could see him standing and let the sight of an unworried instructor do the work that shouting could not.

The ballista released. The heavy bolt went down the corridor’s throat at a flat trajectory and did not stop for the first Scythling, or the ninth, or the fourteenth. It skewered a column of them the way a needle takes thread, and the ones behind climbed the ruin and came on.

Zhong watched the flood swallow the gap.

”They don’t stop,” he said. Not to her. To the corridor.

”No,” Jayde said. ”They don’t have to. That’s why we built the geometry. The geometry stops them.”

He turned his head. Dark brown eyes, a face that had been carved by fifteen years of watching students fail. ”You built the geometry.”

”They’re holding it.”

She rode on before he could answer.

***

The soldiers in the pockets looked up as she passed. The woman on the Charling. The Commander who had built the crossbows and the corridors and the shield walls and the army itself.

Their faces were hollow. Amber-streaked. Burnt out in the particular way that a full day and night of continuous killing produces — not sleepy but scoured, forearms swollen and shaking from hundreds of draw-and-release cycles, fingers split open where the bowstrings had worn through the skin and gone on worrying at what was underneath.

They looked at her. She looked at them. The Commander’s gaze meeting the soldiers’ gaze across the gap between the person who gives the orders and the people who carry the cost.

She didn’t tell them it would be all right. She didn’t tell them they were winning.

”Crossbow maintenance in rotation. Oil the draw mechanisms. Rebind any fraying cords. Eat if you can. The next wave is coming, and I need you sharp.”

Practical. Specific. Actionable. Not comfort — instruction. They responded to instruction the way they responded to everything she had taught them: with the mechanical obedience of people who had learned that the Commander’s instructions were the reason they were still breathing.

Behind her, somebody started passing water down the line.

***

The wave broke on the second day.

Not retreated. Broke. The vanguard’s mass thinned. The Mid Ring traps had done their work — the collapses, the pheromone confusion zones, the spike pits shattering the Scythling carpet into fragments long before it reached the perimeter. What arrived at the Outer Ring was a fraction of what had left the staging caverns.

But a fraction of millions was still hundreds of thousands, and hundreds of thousands had taken two days and forty-one percent of the light bolt reserve to put down.

The corridors fell quiet. The shield walls stayed up. The crossbow teams lowered their weapons and did not unload them. After two days of unbroken noise, the silence was disorienting — a ringing emptiness that pressed on the eardrums like altitude.

The body count was impossible to calculate with any precision. The corridors were carpeted — chitin and amber fluid knee-deep in the primary approach, thigh-deep at the chokepoints where the dead had stacked against each other. The smell was beyond description. Sweet and chemical and wrong. The pheromone signature of a species that announced its own death the way it announced everything else.

Through chemistry.

The recovery teams moved in before the bodies cooled.

Jayde had organized them during the preparation weeks — squads whose job was not fighting but salvage. They waded into the kill corridors waist-deep in the dead, pulling bolts out of chitin and stone. Every shaft that hadn’t shattered on impact was cleaned, inspected, and returned to the caches. Bent shafts straightened or sent back to the fabricator for reprocessing. Damaged heads swapped. Nothing wasted.

But the bolts weren’t the only resource in the corridors.

The Scythlings themselves were raw material. Chitin plates stripped from the dead and fed to the fabricator produced a composite harder than the base alloy alone — the corruption-infused shell bonding into the processed metal to make bolt heads that hit harder and drove deeper. Blade-arms harvested, sharpened, and socketed onto wooden shafts became short spears for close work. Mandible edges, ground down and set into alloy handles, became knives that could punch a Ravager’s joint.

The army that had come to kill them was supplying the weapons that would kill the next wave.

The fabricator ran through the night, processing chitin alongside alloy, producing bolts that were better than the originals because the enemy had donated the raw material.

Recovery ran better than projected. Scythling chitin was thin — most bolts passed clean through, heads emerging intact, embedded in the creature behind or lodged in the corridor wall. The teams pulled thousands of usable shafts out of the primary approach alone. By the time the corridors were cleared, effective expenditure had dropped from forty-one percent to twenty-six.

And the component reserves had grown. Not shrunk.

The math loosened. Not much. Enough to breathe.

***

Casualty report. Seven dead. Twenty-three wounded. Three critical — mandible wounds that Eden’s medics were still fighting to close when the sun would have been coming up, if there had been a sun.

Seven names that Jayde added to the list she carried in her head. The list that had started at three, and would go on growing for the next sixty days.

Tao Lin. Fa Qiu. Wen Houyi. Chen Mao. Bai Ruixue. Song Jiahao. Li Yanming.

Seven names. Seven faces. Seven families above the seal who did not know yet, and would not know for eighty days.

The Commander filed the grief. The woman behind the Commander did not.

”Ammunition count,” Jayde said. ”Every company. Every pocket. Every cache.”

The numbers came back through the runner network. Twenty-six percent of the light reserve gone, after recovery. Better than the raw figure. But the Ravagers were going to change the equation. Their shell was thick enough that fewer bolts would pass clean through, which meant recovery rates would fall. Two to three bolts per kill, and most of them staying embedded in the chitin they killed.

The Siegebreakers would need the heavy bolts. Three hundred and twenty heavy crossbows, one to a squad.

The Praetorians would need the siege lances. Twenty-four. Fixed emplacements, bolted to the corridor floor. Single-use. No reloads.

”Fabricator to maximum bolt production. Every component we have. Day and night.”

The machine that had armed an army now had to keep it armed. Bolt production against bolt expenditure — the equation that would decide whether sixteen hundred soldiers had enough ammunition to outlast an army that had barely shown its vanguard.

Jayde sat the mantis in the primary approach and looked down two hundred meters of tunnel that had been a construction project ten days ago and was now a charnel house.

They had held. They had held against a wave that would have overrun six undefended bases without slowing down to notice them.

The mantis pressed its head-plate against her palm. Warm. Steady. The one constant in a world that had narrowed to stone and chitin and the arithmetic of bolts against bodies.

”That was the easy part,” Jayde said quietly.

The mantis hummed. The low, deep vibration that meant I know.

Day two hundred and eighty-seven. Seventy-eight days remaining.

The Ravagers were coming next.
