Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 435: Chapter 430: Four Friends

Location:Obsidian Academy — Dining Hall, Grounds, Eastern Courtyard

Date/Time:Late Flamefade, 9941 AZI

Realm:Lower Realm

The grain porridge was too thick, and Eden was complaining about it.

”It’s paste,” Eden said, tilting the bowl to demonstrate. The porridge held its shape — a solid mass that refused to acknowledge gravity. Blue eyes bright with the indignation of a woman who took food quality personally. ”This isn’t breakfast. This is a construction material. You could mortar bricks with this.”

”You could,” Ryo agreed. Gray eyes amused. He was eating his without complaint, the way he ate everything — methodically, without wasting time on opinions about texture. ”But you’d have to get it out of the bowl first.”

”That’s my point.”

Kiran hadn’t touched his. He was using his spoon to carve a channel through the center of the porridge, watching it hold its shape with the focused attention of someone conducting an experiment. His sea-green eyes tracked the structural integrity of the channel with genuine interest.

”It’s load-bearing,” he announced.

”It’s breakfast,” Eden said.

”Those aren’t mutually exclusive.”

”Kiran, you can’t eat a building material.”

”You’re eating it.” He pointed at Ryo’s bowl. Ryo had made steady, systematic progress through two-thirds of the porridge without once commenting on its consistency.

”I’m not eating it,” Ryo said. ”I’m processing it. There’s a difference.”

”You sound like Eden.”

”I take that as a compliment.”

”You shouldn’t,” Eden said. ”I was insulting the porridge, not establishing a philosophy.”

Jayde ate hers. It was fine. Thick, yes. Bland, certainly. The Academy’s kitchen operated on the principle that nutrition was a duty rather than a pleasure, and the grain porridge reflected this philosophy with admirable consistency. She’d eaten worse.

The dining hall was loud with the energy of late Flamefade — autumn deepening toward winter, the days shortening, the students compressing their social hours into the shrinking daylight. The Harrowing qualifiers had been announced for Grades 4 and 5, and the tension had filtered downward through the student body like heat through stone. None of that was Jayde’s concern. Grade 2. The Harrowing was for Grade 4 and above, and the next one after this wouldn’t come for another fifty years. But the energy kept attention away from the four students eating porridge in the corner.

”My Formation Theory assessment is tomorrow,” Eden said. She’d given up on the porridge and was drinking tea instead, her dark brown hair tied back in the practical knot she wore for clinical rotations. ”Instructor Vael wants us to demonstrate a three-point stabilization from memory. No reference sheets.”

”You’ll pass,” Jayde said.

”I know I’ll pass. I want to ace it. There’s a difference.”

”The difference is sleep,” Ryo said. ”Which you won’t get if you study past the fourth bell again.”

”That was once.”

”Three times this month.”

Eden’s blue eyes narrowed. ”Are you tracking my lamp hours?”

”Your room is across the hall from mine. Your lamp bleeds under the door. I’m not tracking — I’m observing.”

”Surveillance.”

”Concern.”

”Same thing, different tone.”

”If it makes you feel better,” Ryo said, ”Kiran’s lamp is also on past the fourth bell. But he’s not studying. He’s reading adventure serials.”

”I am not,” Kiran said. Too quickly.

”You have the Wandering Blade Chronicles hidden inside your Cultivation Mechanics textbook. The spine is thicker on the left side.”

Kiran’s sea-green eyes went to Jayde. Betrayal. ”You told him?”

”I didn’t tell him anything.” Jayde took another bite of porridge. ”He noticed the spine on his own.”

”My father trained me to read book spines at ten paces,” Ryo said. Without apology. ”Library surveillance. It’s a family skill.”

”Your family has terrifying hobbies.”

”We prefer ’attentive.’”

Eden was laughing. The sound was unguarded — the laughter of a woman who was comfortable enough to not perform comfort. Her hands wrapped around the tea, shoulders loose, the clinical precision that she wore like armor in the healing wing entirely absent. Just here. Just them.

”What are you staring at?” Kiran said. To Jayde. Without looking up from his porridge.

”Your structural engineering.”

”It was — what’s the word Eden uses? — science. I was testing viscosity.”

”You were playing with your food.”

”Scientifically.”

The morning classes split them. They reconvened at midday, the way they always did, at the table in the eastern courtyard where the fountain had been drained for winter, and the stone benches held the cold.

Eden had brought food from the clinical wing’s kitchen — better than the dining hall, because the healers understood that bodies performing precise essence work needed fuel that wasn’t mortar. Rice. Vegetables in a sauce that tasted like someone had cared about it. Sliced grain-bird that was actually seasoned.

”How,” Ryo said, staring at the food.

”I healed Instructor Maeven’s shoulder yesterday. She’s grateful.”

”You’re exploiting a patient for lunch.”

”I’m accepting a gift from a colleague whose range of motion I restored. There’s a difference.”

”The difference is plausible deniability.”

”The difference is seasoning.”

They ate. The courtyard was quiet — most students ate in the hall, and the eastern courtyard’s stone benches were cold enough in Flamefade to discourage anyone who didn’t specifically want to be there. The four of them specifically wanted to be there. The cold was the price of privacy.

”The east wing smelled again this morning,” Kiran said. Between bites of grain-bird.

”Burnt sugar?” Eden asked.

”Burnt sugar.”

”Someone’s hiding sweets.”

”It’s a formation resonance.” Kiran set down his chopsticks. This was serious. ”The shelving units in the east wing are mounted on the old ward-stones from the original Academy construction. Every time the ward cycle resets — which happens on a three-day rotation starting from Kindleday — the resonance produces a thermal signature that caramelizes the wood treatment in the shelves.”

”That’s elaborate,” Ryo said.

”It’s also testable. If I’m right, it should happen again on Quenchday. I’ve marked the shelves with chalk dust. If the thermal signature is real, the dust will discolor.”

”You’ve set a trap,” Eden said. ”For a smell.”

”For a formation resonance.”

”Kiran. You’ve chalked the library shelves.”

”Discreetly.”

”The librarians are going to—”

”They won’t notice. The chalk matches the stone dust that accumulates naturally along the ward-line joints. I tested three different chalk densities before I found one that blended.”

”Three densities,” Ryo said. ”You tested three chalk densities.”

”Methodology matters.”

”For library vandalism?”

”For formation resonance detection. The vandalism is incidental.”

Eden covered her face with both hands. Laughing behind them. ”If you get expelled over library chalk, I’m not healing your injuries.”

”What injuries?”

”The ones the librarian gives you. She’s eighty, and she carries a walking stick, and I’ve seen her swing it.”

”Quenchday,” Jayde said.

”Quenchday,” Kiran confirmed. The braided cord on his wrist caught the light as he picked up his chopsticks. Ears visible. Eyes satisfied.

Eden stole a piece of his grain-bird while he was distracted by his own certainty.

”Speaking of testable,” Eden said. Chewing. ”I found something in the clinic today. Grade 3 student, routine screening. Her essence channels have a bifurcation in the lower thoracic — the main channel splits into two equal branches instead of tapering.”

”Is that dangerous?” Ryo asked.

”That’s what’s interesting. It shouldn’t work. Bifurcated channels should cause turbulence — the essence divides, loses coherence, and the cultivator loses efficiency. But her efficiency is normal. Better than normal. The two branches are somehow synchronised.”

”How?”

”I don’t know yet. That’s why it’s interesting.” Eden leaned forward. Tea forgotten. Hands tracing channel paths in the air that only she could see. ”I went back through the healing wing’s records. Three other students have the same bifurcation. All mid-to-high performers. None of them were flagged because nobody was looking for it.”

”So the diagnostic model is wrong?” Kiran asked.

”Incomplete. There’s a difference. The model says bifurcation equals turbulence. The data says four students have bifurcation and no turbulence. Either the model needs revision, or there’s a mechanism we haven’t identified.”

”Were they looking for it in your — in the old records?” Ryo caught himself.

Eden didn’t flinch. ”Different diagnostic frameworks. But the principle should be consistent. I’m going to propose a study to Instructor Maeven. Systematic screening for bifurcation patterns across all grades.”

”You’re going to tell Instructor Maeven that her diagnostic framework is incomplete,” Ryo said.

”I’m going to suggest an improvement. Diplomatically.”

”You don’t do anything diplomatically.”

”I do when food is involved. She still owes me for the shoulder.”

”That’s bribery, not diplomacy.”

”In my experience,” Eden said, ”those are the same thing with different napkins.”

The afternoon opened up. No classes until the third bell. They walked.

Through the grounds. Past the formation workshop, where Jayde’s gateway schematics were pinned to the wall. Through the corridor, where the afternoon light came through the high windows and made gold bars on the stone floor. Along the northern wall, where the training grounds were visible below.

Meifen was down there, dual-affinity Inferno-Galebreath cycling through sequences that left heat-shimmer in the cold Flamefade air. The Harrowing qualifiers had sharpened the Grade 5 drills.

”Think we’ll ever get there?” Ryo said. Quiet. Watching.

”Together,” Jayde said. The way they’d done everything since the Secret Realm. The way they’d waited for Ryo and Kiran to catch up before testing into Grade 2 as a group, because four was how they moved, and splitting the formation wasn’t an option.

Ryo’s gray eyes crinkled. ”Together.”

They kept walking. The path curved toward the Academy’s outer perimeter — the old track that circled the grounds along the northern and eastern walls, hard-packed earth worn smooth by generations of students running the same circuit.

”This way,” Ryo said. Not an invitation — a decision. He turned onto the track and walked to the starting post. A weathered stone pillar, waist-high, scarred with the marks of students who’d used it to stretch against for longer than anyone alive could remember.

He crouched. Pointed at the base.

Carved into the stone, worn but legible, a set of initials and a date. The carving was precise — the clean, deep cuts of someone who’d taken care with the work.

”My father,” Ryo said. ”When he was a student here.” His gray eyes were on the initials. His hand wasn’t touching them — hovering, two inches away, the way you hovered near something that mattered too much to be casual with. ”I found them my first week. Didn’t tell anyone.”

Jayde crouched beside him. The initials were small. Neat. The kind of carving a disciplined boy would make — no embellishment, no excess, just the record of a person who’d stood here once.

”He ran this track every morning,” Ryo said. ”He told me that when I was eight. I thought it was boring. Running the same circle every day.” A pause. ”I run it now. Every morning since I found the initials.”

”Is it boring?”

”Every single time.” The gray eyes crinkled. ”That’s the point. You do the boring thing until the boring thing becomes the thing you are. He told me that too.”

Kiran was further down the track, examining a section of the wall where the ward-lines were visible as faint luminous traces in the stone. Eden was beside him, poking at the traces with a diagnostic essence-thread and telling him the thermal contraction was probably just moisture expansion, and Kiran was telling her that moisture expansion didn’t account for the propagation rate, and they were both wrong and both happy about it.

Ryo stood. Looked at the initials one more time.

”I’m going to add mine,” he said. ”Next to his. When I make Grade 3.”

”Why Grade 3?”

”That’s when he carved his.”

Jayde nodded. They walked back to the others.

The four of them took the long way around the northern wall. No reason. The short way was faster and warmer. The long way had better light and a view of the mountain range beyond the Academy’s outer wards, where the peaks were already white with early snow.

”Emberwane is going to be cold,” Eden said. Pulling her collar higher.

”Emberwane is always cold,” Kiran said. ”That’s the entire identity of Emberwane. It’s cold and miserable, and the library smells of burnt sugar every third Hammerday.”

”Quenchday.”

”Right. Quenchday. The point stands.”

”The point is that you’ve memorized the library’s smell schedule.”

”Everyone has a skill, Ryo.”

”That’s not a skill. That’s a fixation.”

”Fixation is just a skill that hasn’t been validated yet.”

Eden looked at Jayde. ”Is he always like this?”

”Always.”

”And you’ve been tolerating it?”

”I find it educational.”

”See?” Kiran spread his hands. ”Educational.”

They walked. The mountain peaks white. The light gold. The cold sharp enough to feel alive in.

Kiran pointed out a crack in the northern wall’s ward-line that he’d been monitoring for two weeks — ”It’s propagating at three millimeters per day, which means the maintenance cycle isn’t compensating for thermal contraction, which means—” and Eden told him he was the only person who could make masonry sound urgent, and Ryo said nothing but pulled out a small notebook and wrote down the measurement, and Kiran stopped mid-sentence and stared at him.

”You’re recording my wall data?”

”It’s good data.”

”You think I’m right about the thermal contraction?”

”I think you’re right about something every third day. The wall data feels like a third-day entry.”

Kiran looked at Jayde. ”He’s humouring me.”

”He’s recording your data,” Jayde said. ”Those are different things.”

The light was shifting. The cold was deepening. The gold bars on the stone floor were stretching into amber, and the shadows between them were filling with the quality of late Flamefade evenings — the blue edge of winter pushing into the last warmth of autumn.

The third bell rang.

Eden waved. Already walking toward the clinical wing, already thinking about the bifurcation study, already composing the proposal to Instructor Maeven. ”Study group at the fifth bell. You’re all invited. Attendance is mandatory.”

”Those are contradictory statements,” Kiran called after her.

”Not if you understand subtext.”

Ryo headed for the training grounds. The nod. The crinkle.

Kiran lingered. Hands in his pockets. The braided cord. The ears. The sea-green eyes holding something he didn’t say.

”Quenchday,” he said. ”Come with me to check the chalk.”

”Wouldn’t miss it.”

He grinned. Brief. Real. Then he was gone.

Jayde walked back to her quarters. Opened her formation notes. The mineral-scented ink needed refreshing — she made a note to pick up a new block from the supply office in the morning. Sat down. Started working on the gateway calibration sequence she’d been refining all week.

The Flamefade evening settled. The stars came out. The brush moved.
