This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

”Some people truly can’t be cured; there’s simply no way.”

Du Heng paused briefly. ”There’s another issue. Regarding your classmate, Gu, we can confirm that her current condition arose purely from her rivalry with you.

So, the problem is this: the trigger for her illness can be considered to be you. I’m your husband. If I were to treat her, given how petty she is, how do you think she’d react?”

Wu Shengnan’s eyes shifted as she slowly replied, ”She might think you’re there to gloat, that I deliberately sent you to humiliate her?”

Du Heng’s mouth twitched. ”Exactly. Given how petty your classmate is, that’s highly probable.

And once she thinks that, the liver wind won’t subside. In fact, if the liver wind becomes too strong, it will stir up the exuberant sovereign fire from above and, from below, induce the frenetic stirring of the ministerial fire. Once the fire of thunder dragon forms, there are only three possible outcomes for her.”

Curiosity piqued, Wu Shengnan quickly asked, ”What three?”

”First, facial paralysis, with a crooked mouth; second, hemiplegia, such as a claw-like hand or difficulty walking; and third, complete paralysis, rendering her unable to walk or speak clearly.

Let me be clear: these are symptoms considered incurable under normal circumstances.”

As Du Heng spoke, he gave Wu Shengnan a peculiar look. ”Why are you asking for so many details? Are you harboring some other thoughts?”

Wu Shengnan rolled her eyes. ”Do you think I’m that malicious? I’m just worried about her.”

Du Heng chuckled. ”You’re worrying needlessly. With her family background, do you think she can’t find a good doctor?

Moreover, I’ve discussed the treatment of liver wind invading inwards in my previous papers. As long as the attending doctor is diligent in this area and has read my work, and if your classmate isn’t too stubborn and maintains a peaceful mindset, even the most severe cases can be cured.”

Wu Shengnan had been fine until Du Heng mentioned a cure; now she was quite annoyed. ”If she can be cured, why did you make it sound so serious before? Were you trying to scare me?”

Her words left Du Heng rather speechless. ”I was just telling you the worst-case scenario.

Alright, alright, let’s not get angry over this, okay? Constant anger isn’t good for the baby in your belly.

What if the baby is born and also throws tantrums all the time? Could you handle that?”

”PAH! PAH! PAH! Can’t you say something more auspicious?” Wu Shengnan was exasperated by Du Heng’s unfiltered words.

Du Heng chuckled and echoed her, ”PAH! PAH! PAH!”

In the days that followed, Wu Shengnan’s mood improved considerably, and Du Heng was always by her side, laughing and joking with her.

However, a few concerns still lingered deep within him.

His worries were confirmed the next day when he returned to work.

As soon as he arrived at the hospital in the morning, Du Heng received a call from Dr. Liu from the previous day. Du Heng had to put down what he was doing and hurried to find him.

”Deputy Director Du, last night, after Professor Ding learned about her husband’s condition, she had another emotional breakdown,” Dr. Liu said, his expression a mixture of worry and bitterness. ”She was crying, making a scene, and even struck her parents.

We had no choice but to use restraints on her again.”

Du Heng frowned slightly. ”Her parents came?”

”They arrived around seven last night. It seems several leaders from your school came too; it was quite the spectacle.” Dr. Liu wore an awkward expression, a mix of disdain, contempt, and ridicule, though it was unclear at whom these emotions were directed.

However, knowing Ding Zhankui’s status, Du Heng wasn’t surprised by the school leaders’ behavior. He asked gravely, ”Who told her the true situation?”

”Her parents, of course,” Dr. Liu said helplessly. ”Your Professor Ding had barely exchanged a few words with her parents before they started arguing. Then, with a slip of the tongue, the whole thing came out.

Professor Ding broke down on the spot and started acting erratically.”

”Then why didn’t you call me, Dr. Liu?”

”I can’t keep troubling you, can I? Besides, the medical advice for the medicine you administered yesterday hadn’t been altered on our end, so I just gave another dose.”

Hearing Dr. Liu’s words, Du Heng realized he had misspoken.

It dawned on him that Dr. Liu was Ding Yuxue’s attending doctor; he himself was, at best, a doctor called in for a consultation. What right did he have to expect Dr. Liu to call him?

Dr. Liu, as an attending physician in the emergency department at Good Friend Hospital, naturally had a strong sense of pride. Constantly calling a TCM doctor for help? How would that look?

It simply wouldn’t reflect well on him.

So, once Du Heng understood, he changed his question. ”So, Dr. Liu, why did you ask me to come over?”

”Well, it’s like this: I gave the patient her medicine at 2 a.m. today, but it’s now 8 a.m., six hours later.” Dr. Liu asked with a hint of worry, ”Deputy Director Du, when you administered the medicine yesterday, the patient only slept for less than an hour. But this time, she’s been asleep for over six hours and hasn’t woken up. Could there be a problem?”

Du Heng began to understand. It seemed Dr. Liu was unsure about the effects of the Chinese herbal medicine. ”Are all of Professor Ding’s vital signs stable?”

”Stable. Just like a normal person sleeping,” Dr. Liu confirmed with a nod.

Du Heng breathed a sigh of relief. ”Oh, in that case, it’s fine.”

”But the duration...”

”That’s quite normal. She woke up in under an hour yesterday because Professor Ding was in a state of high emotional tension at that time, which gave her some resistance to the medication.

After all the turmoil of the past day, her essence and qi have been considerably drained, and her spirit is weakened. Sleeping more now is actually a good thing.”

”A good thing?” Dr. Liu wasn’t a psychiatrist, but after a moment’s thought, he understood what Du Heng meant. ”Will she wake up this time?”

Regarding this question, Du Heng could only sigh and reply ambiguously, ”She should, I think.”

This time, he wasn’t sure either.

As Du Heng finished speaking, both he and Dr. Liu fell silent.

They had methods to treat Ding Yuxue, but her unstable condition had become the most tormenting aspect.

”Doctor, my daughter is awake.” Just as the two were silent, an old man, looking somewhat weary, appeared at the entrance of Dr. Liu’s office.

Upon hearing the voice, Dr. Liu’s face lit up with joy. Noticing that Du Heng and the old man at the door didn’t know each other, he quickly made introductions.

Ding Zhankui indeed needed an introduction, but Du Heng did not.

Du Heng had seen Ding Zhankui’s photo from previous rehabilitation work, so he had some recollection. Although the man wasn’t as energetic as in the picture, his general features hadn’t changed much.

”This is Deputy Director Du Heng from our hospital’s Traditional Chinese Medicine Internal Medicine Department. The decoction the patient took last night was prescribed by Deputy Director Du,” Dr. Liu introduced softly. ”I was just discussing with Deputy Director Du, and he’s still quite optimistic about the patient’s condition.”

Optimistic?

Du Heng couldn’t help but glance at Dr. Liu.

When did I say I was optimistic?

He figured Dr. Liu had probably said it so euphemistically, fearing that this old man, Ding Zhankui, wouldn’t be able to take the truth.

Just as his mind was racing and he was about to go with Dr. Liu to check on Ding Yuxue, Ding Zhankui spoke.

”Dr. Du Heng, I know you,” Ding Zhankui said, staring intently at Du Heng, his words coming out very slowly.

”Mr. Ding, you know me?” Du Heng was quite surprised by this.

Ding Zhankui managed a faint smile. ”Yes, Du Heng, leader of the national ’Stroke Rehabilitation’ group. You could say we’re colleagues on the same path.

However, I specialize in meridian dredging rehabilitation, while you focus on a rehabilitation approach that covers the viscera, meridians, and qi and blood. Your treatment scope is much broader than mine.

I’ve studied your papers and validated them in practice; they genuinely work.”

”Thank you for your praise, Mr. Ding.”
