This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Just as Du Heng finished speaking, Director Zhao immediately looked at him with suspicion. His first reaction to Du Heng’s suggestion was that Du Heng wanted to curry favor with Ding Zhankui.

”Mr. Du, this is no joking matter,” Director Zhao said, quietly glancing at Secretary Hao and quickly trying to smooth things over for Du Heng. If the treatment were successful, it would indeed be a way to curry favor with Ding Zhankui. But if it failed, it would be no different from trying to curry favor by patting a horse’s hooves—a clumsy and ineffective gesture. In that case, it would be better not to try at all. Besides, just by curing Ding Yuxue’s son, Du Heng had already earned Ding Zhankui’s gratitude.

”I’m not joking; I’m serious.” Du Heng also saw the suspicion in Director Zhao’s eyes and immediately understood his thoughts. But to be honest, Du Heng truly had no intention of currying favor with Ding Zhankui; he was simply speaking from the perspective of a doctor and a colleague.

Director Zhao wanted to say more, but Secretary Hao directly asked Du Heng, ”Mr. Du, are you confident?”

Du Heng nodded gently. ”I saw Professor Ding’s condition just now. It’s quite similar to a patient I treated before, so it shouldn’t be a major problem.”

Director Hao immediately nodded. ”As long as you’re confident, that’s good. And since you’re a doctor at this hospital, it’s convenient for you to take action.” With that, he turned and started walking back. ”Let’s go, hurry.”

When they returned to the entrance of the emergency room, Du Heng was thinking of contacting Director Wu to have him coordinate with the Emergency Department. However, Secretary Hao took charge of everything, found the director of the Emergency Department, and resolved the matter directly.

When Du Heng saw Ding Yuxue again, she looked completely different from how she had ten minutes prior. Her eyes were turbid and vacant, bloodshot. Though open, she appeared extremely wooden, showing no signs of her earlier frenzy and struggling. Upon seeing this, Du Heng knew she must have been given a strong sedative. Although it had some effect, it wasn’t a significant one.

Dr. Liu, who had been attending to her earlier, frowned as he glanced at Du Heng. He wasn’t particularly bothered by Du Heng’s sudden involvement in the treatment. What he found hard to accept was Du Heng, a traditional Chinese medicine doctor, attempting to treat a mental illness. Even if Hao Pengyou Hospital’s traditional Chinese medicine and its integration of traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine were nationally renowned, he still felt TCM wasn’t up to the task of treating mental illness. However, since the Director had agreed, the patient’s leader had agreed, and Du Heng himself was a Deputy Chief Chinese Medicine Doctor at their hospital, Dr. Liu had no grounds to object. So, Dr. Liu merely glanced at Du Heng before voluntarily stepping back to make room.

Du Heng, not standing on ceremony, walked straight to Ding Yuxue’s side and bent down to examine her carefully. Her tongue coating was yellow and thick, with linear bruising on the left side. Her pulse was deep and slippery.

Du Heng’s eyes flickered slightly as a diagnosis immediately formed in his mind. Professor Ding’s condition was indeed a bit different from the previous cases he had treated. For example, Wang Shizhen’s wife. After her son died due to her own negligence, she suffered severe emotional distress. This, compounded by days of irregular lifestyle, damaged her stomach qi and led to phlegm clouding her heart orifices, resulting in a stupor. But Professor Ding’s situation, however, was entirely due to excessive stimulation. This had caused exuberant heart fire, with phlegm-heat ascending to cloud her mind. In her case, merely sedating her nervous system without reducing the heart fire would be completely ineffective. At best, her condition would merely fluctuate, sometimes better, sometimes worse.

Seeing Du Heng finish his examination, everyone around waited eagerly for his diagnosis. Secretary Hao, unable to hold back, asked, ”Mr. Du, can it be done?”

At this moment, Du Heng certainly wouldn’t falter. He nodded firmly at Secretary Hao. ”I’ve examined her thoroughly. Her condition is due to exuberant heart fire causing phlegm-heat to ascend. Simply put, she experienced excessive stimulation, causing extreme emotions to transform into fire. This fire, combined with phlegm, ascended to disturb her Shen, leading to mental disarray.”

Hearing there was a possibility, Secretary Hao quickly asked again, ”Can it be treated?”

”It can,” Du Heng replied swiftly. ”We can use medicinal ingredients like raw gypsum, moutan, puccoon, rhubarbs, mirabilite, and scutellaria baicalensis to clear the phlegm and refresh the brain.”

Director Zhao immediately chimed in, ”Then let’s proceed quickly.”

At this point, however, Du Heng gently shook his head. ”When I took Professor Ding’s pulse just now, I found that she is currently menstruating. Her intense emotional distress has transformed into fire, causing her menstrual blood to stagnate, with clotted blood intermingled. Therefore, we also need to add some herbs to the prescription to dispel blood stasis.”

Du Heng’s explanation was quite clear, but Director Zhao and Secretary Hao seemed unimpressed, urging him, ”Mr. Du, you’re the expert. Whatever you say, goes. We don’t understand it, so you don’t need to explain it to us.”

Du Heng suddenly glanced a bit awkwardly at Dr. Liu beside him, just in time to see Dr. Liu rolling his eyes. That was right; those two wouldn’t understand. But the thing was, Du Heng hadn’t been speaking for their benefit. His primary audience for those remarks was Dr. Liu.

However, Du Heng couldn’t explain much at this point, so he wrote out the prescription according to his assessment. ”Dr. Liu, I’ll have to trouble you with this.”

A corner of Dr. Liu’s mouth twitched. ”It’s no trouble. It’s all for the patient, after all.” After saying this, he quickly scanned the prescription and called over a nearby nurse.

As they waited, a sense of boredom setting in, the doctor from the resuscitation room hurried over. ”Which leader here can make the decisions?”
