This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

”Deputy Director Du, your treatment today really opened my eyes.” Exiting the hospital room, Director Niu couldn’t resist praising him again. ”Honestly, after seeing the child, I also felt that dialysis was the only option left. I didn’t expect it to be so simple in your hands. Tsk tsk, the wonders of traditional Chinese medicine are truly on full display with you.”

Du Heng was unsure how to respond to such accolades.

Director Wu, however, had no such reservations and laughed heartily. ”Old Niu, traditional Chinese medicine is full of wonders, and our Deputy Director Du has many more skills up his sleeve.”

Director Niu also chuckled. ”Old Wu, you’ve really found a treasure. With Deputy Director Du here, not only is there no longer a possibility of your Traditional Chinese Medicine Internal Medicine Department being split, but it’s also bound to reach new heights.”

These words made Director Wu’s smile falter slightly.

Precision treatment and department specialization were the prevailing trends. The classification methods for adult internal medicine, whether in traditional Chinese medicine or Western medicine, were becoming somewhat outdated.

The division of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Internal Medicine Department at Good Friend Hospital had long been anticipated and was an ongoing process.

The process began with the initial separation of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Colorectal Department. Later, the Traditional Chinese Medicine Cardiopulmonary Department, Traditional Chinese Medicine Hepatobiliary Department, Traditional Chinese Medicine Ophthalmology Department, and Traditional Chinese Medicine Gynecology were formed. Finally, with Bald Yang’s Traditional Chinese Medicine Spleen and Stomach Department established last year, everything indicated that the split of the Internal Medicine Department was inevitable and in its final stages.

But now, with Du Heng’s arrival, all of Director Wu’s worries vanished.

A person like Du Heng was perfectly suited for the grand stage of adult internal medicine. Assigning him to any specialized sub-department would be a colossal waste of talent.

Seeing Director Wu’s expression, Director Niu realized he’d misspoken. He chuckled and said, ”Alright, since everything’s fine on your end, I’ll head back. Deputy Director Du, our Nephrology Department also has some rather challenging cases. If you have time, could you perhaps help us review them?”

Du Heng quickly replied, ”I’d be more than happy to. Director Niu, whenever you need me, I’m just a call away.”

”Excellent, it’s settled then. I’ll go back and organize the disease records I have on hand.” After these polite words, Director Niu left with another chuckle.

Director Wu let out a soft sigh and started walking towards his office with Du Heng.

He hadn’t brought up this topic with Du Heng before because it hadn’t been explicitly raised. But now that Old Niu had broached the subject, he felt he needed to discuss it with Du Heng.

And just then, the phone in Ding Yuxue’s pocket rang.

”Son, son?” After ending the call, Ding Yuxue leaned over her son’s bed. Seeing his eyes slightly open, she called out to him softly, her voice filled with excitement.

”Mum, I’m thirsty. I want to drink some water.”

Ding Yuxue was overjoyed. But when she looked around and found no drinking water nearby, she became annoyed.

She wanted to go buy water but worried about leaving her son alone; if she didn’t go, she feared he would be uncomfortable.

At that moment, Ding Yuxue started to feel a surge of dissatisfaction with her husband.

Just as she was still pondering what to do, the child on the hospital bed spoke again, ”Mum, are we at the hospital?”

Ding Yuxue nodded hastily, wanting to say something comforting to her son but unable to find the right words.

The child, however, was very understanding and asked directly, ”Mum, is my illness worse?”

After he asked, seeing Ding Yuxue nod, the child glanced around the hospital room, a clear look of disappointment flashing in his eyes. ”Is Dad not here again?”

Ding Yuxue forced a smile. ”Dad’s at work, but he called just now. He’s already on his way.”

While the mother and son were talking, the nurse who had been standing by the door came in to check on them and then called Dr. Cao Binghe in.

Ding Yuxue took the opportunity to ask, ”Dr. Cao, my child wants to drink some water. Can I give him a little?”

Cao Binghe gently shook his head. ”Don’t give him too much for now. Just use a cotton swab dipped in water to moisten his lips. He can only drink water once he starts to urinate.”

Subsequently, Dr. Cao Binghe modified the medical advice, extending the interval for administering medicine by an hour, planning to adjust it again once the child was able to urinate.

Just as it was nearing noon, Du Heng finally emerged from Director Wu’s office.

Du Heng wasn’t actually bothered by the department’s current predicament.

In his plans, he truly had no intention of taking over as Department Director. After achieving his personal goals, he planned to return to Jinzhou.

So, he wasn’t particularly upset by what Director Wu had just said.

Moreover, Du Heng was very clear on one point: department specialization was an inevitable societal development. Even if he could prevent it now, what would happen after he left?

Who could possibly manage the current adult internal medicine department then?

As for the current Traditional Chinese Medicine Internal Medicine Department, he and Director Wu were the only Director and Deputy Director. Several attending physicians had been taken by Bald Yang when he split off. Including Cao Binghe, there were now only three attending physicians in the department.

Among these three, each had their own area of expertise. The only one who could be considered somewhat comprehensive was Cao Binghe, and even that was a stretch.

With so few people—just a handful, really—how could adult internal medicine possibly hold on?

The only hope now was to mentor Cao Binghe before he left, enabling him to smoothly take over from Director Wu. Only then would adult internal medicine have a chance of survival.

If Cao Binghe didn’t learn the ropes, then once Du Heng returned to Jinzhou and Director Wu retired, the adult internal medicine department would inevitably be split up again.
