This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Wu Shengnan glanced at Gu and continued, ”You might also say that the suspect has some special fetish, so he keeps going back to the crime scene. If it’s a special fetish, so much time has passed, and the victim has already been processed into a dried corpse, which barely weighs anything and is very easy to move. The suspect could move his... according to your logic, let’s call it a ’work,’ he could move his work to a hidden place for both collection and convenient appreciation. More importantly, he would have plenty of time to deal with the crime scene. This way, he wouldn’t have to frequently appear in the community, thus avoiding leaving an impression on the security guards, and the crime scene would not be easily discovered. Even if it were found, by then, a long time would have passed, and the victim would be treated, at most, as a missing person.”

Wu Shengnan’s explanation was seamless, which made Gu a little agitated. ”That’s impossible! He and the victim were lovers. If his girlfriend went missing and he didn’t report it, that’s already a problem. Moreover, as long as there’s a crime, there will always be traces. So, his actions are deceiving the public, making everyone in the community mistakenly think the victim is in the room. Meanwhile, he must have some special liking for the crime scene, which is why he didn’t move the body.”

Wu Shengnan chuckled. ”If we go by what you say, the suspect only needs to claim they broke up long ago and that he’s completely unaware of her disappearance. What would you do then? The main point is, so much time has passed, and the clues have almost been worn away by time. Where would you even start your investigation?”

Gu’s face flushed, her eyes staring fiercely at Wu Shengnan. She wanted to come up with more reasons, but her mind felt numb at that moment, unable to think, which made her even more anxious, causing her eyes to feel swollen.

At this moment, the teacher on the podium began to gently applaud. ”In your class of sixty-two students, only Wu Shengnan analyzed that the suspect is a mental patient. The analyses from others... were a bit more complex. By the way, in the other class, four students came to the same conclusion.”

The teacher chuckled. ”Let me clarify: this mental patient is not the kind with neurological disorders caused by stimulation, but one with cognitive abnormality. Also, there’s no other meaning to this test; it’s just to tell everyone not to overcomplicate simple issues. Sometimes, the suspect is not as smart or capable as everyone imagines.”

After saying this, the teacher looked at Wu Shengnan. ”Maybe you’ve already heard the news, but I still have to tell you: you don’t have to come to school tomorrow. You and the other four students will go to the Department to find me.”

Wu Shengnan’s heart leaped with joy. Truth be told, she was fed up with the past month of classes, and if it weren’t for her pregnancy, she might not have been able to sit still.

However, as the teacher watched a delighted Wu Shengnan, the teacher said, ”Don’t get too excited too soon. This time you’re just being assigned to a case. After the case is over, you’ll have to come back to class. And you can’t fall behind on your studies during this period.”

”I understand, Teacher. I’ll make sure to catch up on the lessons.” Wu Shengnan didn’t care whether it was just for one case or a long-term job; she simply didn’t want to attend classes or see Gu anymore. As this thought crossed her mind, she subconsciously glanced at Gu’s face.

It was in that glance that she noticed something was wrong with Gu. Her eyes were panicked, the right corner of her mouth drooped slightly, and saliva was seeping out, but her facial muscles weren’t moving at all. Moreover, her palm resting at her side seemed a bit stiff, with her fingers half-curved.

Wu Shengnan was startled and quickly shifted her full attention to Gu. Only then did she see the full extent of Gu’s condition: her face showed signs of slight trembling.

”Gu, are you alright?” Wu Shengnan reached out anxiously, but upon contact, she found the girl’s whole body tensed and stiff.

At Wu Shengnan’s shout and alarmed movements, the others in the classroom also noticed something was wrong with the girl. Students hurriedly gathered around her without waiting for the teacher’s instruction. Wu Shengnan, hampered by her pregnancy, was ushered aside by the others.

A flurry of activity ensued, but to no avail. In the end, they had to carry the girl to the hospital.

Wu Shengnan was a little panicked and confused. Du Heng’s words from two days ago echoed in her mind: Petty, unable to let things go, had a stroke.

Was it a stroke? Wu Shengnan wasn’t sure. However, having been with Du Heng for a long time, she knew a bit about the symptoms of a stroke, so a definite idea was already forming in her mind. And as this idea solidified, Wu Shengnan suddenly felt a pang of guilt. If I hadn’t refuted her so forcefully just now, perhaps this girl wouldn’t have gotten so agitated and upset, and maybe this wouldn’t have happened. But then again, how on earth did I offend this girl? Just because we were at odds, she got this upset? Was it really necessary?

Wu Shengnan watched helplessly as a group of male students busily carried the girl away. Afterward, the classroom returned to silence. At this point, the teacher had also lost any desire to continue the class, dismissed it early, and followed several male students out.

Wu Shengnan felt quite helpless. She sat back in her seat, thought for a while, then called Du Heng. After all, Du Heng was an absolute expert when it came to strokes. It would be good to confirm with him. If her assessment was wrong, at least her mind could be at ease. Alas, I seem to have softened a lot since becoming pregnant. In the past, I would never have felt this way. The way Gu was confronting me... if this were the past, not giving her a couple of slaps on the spot would mean I’d taken the wrong medicine!

Wu Shengnan sighed and quietly listened to the ringing on her phone.

「Meanwhile」

Du Heng had wandered around the ward, chatted aimlessly with the little boy for a while, and fearing that the boy would ask him a difficult question, he hurriedly withdrew. Just as he stepped out, he received a call from Director Zhao, saying that Ding Yuxue had woken up. Du Heng checked the time; only forty minutes had passed between his departure and receiving the call.

Back in the Emergency Isolation Room, Du Heng saw Ding Yuxue again. At this moment, Ding Yuxue was different from before. Her eyes were full of exhaustion, and her face was pale and unwell, but there was more spirit in her gaze now, and less of its former dullness. Moreover, when she saw Du Heng, she recognized him and even asked about her child, ”Mr. Du, how is my son?”

”The child is fine; our doctors and nurses are with him.” Du Heng replied softly, ”Your mental exhaustion is quite severe, so don’t worry too much. Rest for a while.”

Ding Yuxue, tired, lay back on the bed and hesitantly asked, ”How about... my husband? I just asked the Secretary and Director Zhao, and they both said they came to see me; they didn’t know about my husband’s condition.”

Du Heng’s heart skipped a beat. What was he supposed to say? Given Ding Yuxue’s current state, if I dare to tell her the truth, I can’t imagine the consequences, but it certainly won’t be any better than this. Even if I don’t say it, she can probably guess. But as long as I don’t tell her explicitly, even if she suspects it, she’ll still cling to a sliver of hope. And that lingering hope is what will keep her going.

Du Heng furrowed his brow. ”I really don’t know about this. I was only asked by the hospital to come over; I didn’t hear anything about your husband’s situation. Afterward, you can ask the attending doctor here; they might know.” He had to continue deflecting the question. ”You rest for a while; I’ll go find your attending doctor.”

Du Heng turned to leave but was suddenly halted by Ding Yuxue. ”Mr. Du, can you tell me what happened to me just now?”

”You fainted at the hospital entrance, but I’m not exactly sure what happened. Ask your attending doctor about it.” After saying this, Du Heng quickly exited the isolation room; he was genuinely afraid Ding Yuxue would press him with more questions.

As soon as he stepped out, Director Zhao pulled him some distance away. Only when they were far enough that Ding Yuxue couldn’t possibly hear them did Director Zhao anxiously ask, ”Mr. Du, what’s Professor Ding’s current situation? Is she out of danger?”

Du Heng was about to answer when his phone rang in his pocket. Seeing it was Wu Shengnan, he thought for a moment and then declined the call directly. He then turned to tell Director Zhao about Ding Yuxue’s situation.
