This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

”So, this isn’t the first time she’s been told this? Intestinal bloating?”

Director Huang’s neck instantly stiffened with anger.

How the hell does this look like intestinal bloating? he fumed internally. Saying this girl is pregnant would be more believable than diagnosing intestinal bloating!

Although furious, Director Huang couldn’t actually vent his anger. Based on the mother’s account and the fact that the girl had undergone two previous surgeries where doctors had diagnosed intestinal bloating, there was some basis for it.

Moreover, this wasn’t the time for a outburst. Director Huang composed himself and immediately said to the doctor following him, ”Order a CT scan right away. Let’s get some images and see exactly what the problem is.”

The doctor behind him discreetly wiped cold sweat from his forehead, then hurriedly left to put in the order for the CT scan.

It was none other than him who had previously diagnosed the girl with intestinal bloating.

「Soon, the results were out: a pancreatic cyst measuring 15x20.5cm.」

Seeing the result, Director Huang was dumbfounded.

It didn’t take much thought to conclude that the cyst’s formation was undoubtedly related to the previous two surgeries and the girl’s original injuries.

”Director, why not try minimally invasive drainage?” the doctor who had made the earlier mistake hesitantly suggested. ”The chance of such a large cyst disappearing naturally is low. And the patient has already undergone two surgeries; another operation would inevitably cause too much harm.”

Director Huang stared fixedly at the CT scan, neither approving nor disapproving of the sudden suggestion.

After a long moment, Director Huang gently tapped his forehead. ”Minimally invasive? Drainage?”

Muttering to himself for a moment, he then asked the doctor who had spoken, ”We can try, but are you capable of performing it?”

The doctor nodded resolutely. As an attending physician, if he couldn’t even perform this minimally invasive procedure, he would be far too incompetent. Moreover, his eagerness also stemmed from a desire to make up for his previous mistake.

After a brief moment of consideration, Director Huang nodded slowly. ”Alright, go ahead and give it a try.” With that, he turned back to look at the scans.

His demeanor made it clear he didn’t hold much hope for the drainage procedure.

As expected, half an hour later, the doctor who had left returned, crestfallen.

Director Huang glanced at him and asked, ”Is it done? How did it go?”

The doctor who entered blushed slightly, timidly glancing at Director Huang. Noticing the Director was still looking down at something and not paying him much attention, he whispered, ”The cyst is too large, and it’s too close to the spleen. I couldn’t find a suitable spot for the puncture.”

Director Huang said softly, ”I thought you might take the risk and try anyway.”

The attending physician gave an awkward laugh. ”The patient’s spleen just had surgery, and now this pancreatic cyst is enormous. I didn’t dare to try.”

”Not daring to try was the right decision,” Director Huang said, looking up at the attending physician. ”I’ve given it more serious thought. With the patient’s current condition, the possibility of conservative treatment leading to its regression is almost nil. Surgical removal is the only option. However, she’s already had two operations in a short period. Another one would be too damaging; I’m afraid her body wouldn’t be able to withstand it.”

The attending physician said nothing, just stared intently at Director Huang.

You’re just stating the obvious, he couldn’t help but grumble inwardly. I considered that problem earlier, which is why I suggested minimally invasive drainage. So now that my attempt has failed, you get to look like the insightful one!

But grumbling inwardly was one thing; he didn’t dare voice such thoughts aloud.

Not only did he lack the courage to speak up, but he also had to help Director Huang brainstorm. ”In that case, we can only wait for a while before deciding. But this cyst has grown to this size in less than half a month. Can the patient afford to wait?”

Director Huang let out a small sigh and involuntarily leaned back in his chair. ”Exactly. That’s why we need to find some external help now.”

Understanding the hint, the attending physician immediately said, ”I’ll contact Director Yang from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Spleen and Stomach Department right now and ask him to come over for a consultation.”

It was, in principle, a good idea, and Director Huang had indeed meant to invite a traditional Chinese medicine specialist for a consultation. However, Director Huang shook his head. ”Nevermind him. For treating minor spleen and stomach ailments, he’s fine. But as for controlling a cyst this large, his skills aren’t up to par.”

”Then... how about Director Wu from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Internal Medicine Department?”

Director Huang shook his head again. ”Old Wu... he probably won’t do either. Don’t be fooled by his title as Director of Traditional Chinese Medicine General Practice. His real strength lies in treating cardiopulmonary issues; he’s quite the expert there. As for the spleen and stomach, I’ve never really seen his skills in that area.”

The attending physician was dumbfounded.

This one won’t work, that one won’t work... If you’re so good, why don’t you do it yourself?!

Swallowing quietly, the attending physician tentatively asked, ”Shall we invite a director from another Traditional Chinese Medicine department then?”

Director Huang heaved another long sigh. ”Ah, since Professor Lan retired, we can’t find any heavyweights in the Traditional Chinese Medicine department at our Good Friend Hospital. It seems Traditional Chinese Medicine is truly in decline.”

The attending physician almost couldn’t stop himself from rolling his eyes.

Listen to him talk! Good Friend Hospital’s Traditional Chinese Medicine department, while perhaps not the absolute top dog in the Capital Traditional Chinese Medical Circle, is definitely among the best. How many other hospitals’ TCM departments would even dare to compare with Good Friend Hospital’s? It’s really just the hospital’s name that gives people the wrong impression, making them think it’s somehow illegitimate or unreliable.
