This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

”Doctor Du, are you serious?”

After learning about Ding Yuxue’s situation, Dr. Liu wore the same expression as the previous Emergency Doctor.

Are we looking at a complete wipeout here?

Du Heng was no longer surprised by this expression. From Cao Binghe to this Dr. Liu, and even including himself, almost everyone had reacted the same way.

”How could I joke about something like this?” Du Heng sighed. ”Dr. Liu, please, tell me about Professor Ding’s condition first.”

”She was overly stimulated and had a mental breakdown,” Dr. Liu sighed, echoing Du Heng. ”In just over an hour of observation, we’ve identified a possible case of schizophrenia.”

As Dr. Liu spoke, he couldn’t help but sigh again. ”And, as you saw, the patient is extremely agitated. We can’t control her without restraints.”

Du Heng couldn’t help but draw a sharp breath; he hadn’t expected the worst-case scenario to actually materialize.

Yet, he wasn’t surprised.

Ding Yuxue had been on high alert all morning because of her son’s issues. The moment she began to relax, she was confronted with her husband demanding a divorce. A breakdown was almost inevitable.

”So, how have you been treating her? Has nothing worked?”

”We administered a sedative earlier, but it had no effect. We’re now considering using a strong sedative.”

Dr. Liu said solemnly, ”This is the initial stage. If we can get it under control, there shouldn’t be any major long-term problems for the patient. But if the strong sedative also proves ineffective, we’ll have to consider transferring her to a specialized psychiatric hospital for controlled treatment.”

Du Heng fell silent for a moment. He considered stepping in to offer his help.

But before he could voice his thoughts, the mobile phone in his pocket rang.

Seeing the call was from Director Zhao, Du Heng apologized to Dr. Liu and quickly stepped aside to answer.

Upon learning that Director Zhao and the institute’s Secretary were arriving soon, Du Heng temporarily shelved his idea of intervening and hurried to the main entrance to meet them.

”Mr. Du, what exactly is going on?” The moment they met, Secretary Hao eagerly asked for an update.

Du Heng quietly recounted the events. ”Professor Ding’s husband is in critical condition and requires a family member’s signature for consent.”

Secretary Hao glanced at Director Zhao, who immediately shook his head. ”I’m not very familiar with Professor Ding’s husband either. I only know he’s an artist and not from around here. I really don’t know anything else.”

Du Heng said helplessly, ”Then we must contact them quickly. The hospital will do everything in its power to save him; we don’t need to manage that part for now.”

”Alright, let’s set his situation aside for the moment. Mr. Du, first tell us about Professor Ding.”

”Professor Ding’s condition is also not good. The Emergency Doctor mentioned a possibility of schizophrenia, the manic type.”

Du Heng relayed everything he knew. ”I saw her just now; the assessment is accurate. We also need a signature for her medication, and if it comes to it, a transfer to a specialized hospital for treatment.”

Director Zhao gasped. ”Professor Ding’s family isn’t here either? What are we going to do?”

Secretary Hao’s expression turned grave, and he declared, ”There’s no time to hesitate. I’ll sign. We must ensure Professor Ding is alright. Mr. Du, please lead the way.”

Seeing Secretary Hao’s decisiveness, Du Heng wasted no more words and led him directly to Dr. Liu.

At Secretary Hao’s insistence, Dr. Liu took him inside to see Professor Ding, leaving Du Heng and Director Zhao waiting outside.

At this point, Du Heng asked curiously, ”Director Zhao, when can Professor Ding’s family get here? Signatures are needed, and the child also needs someone to look after him.”

Director Zhao sighed. ”I’m not sure about that either.”

Du Heng was taken aback. ”What do you mean?”

”It’s a long story, so I’ll keep it brief,” Director Zhao sighed and began to explain slowly. ”Professor Ding’s family was vehemently opposed to her relationship with her husband. But Professor Ding was determined to be with him, which led to a complete falling out with her family. She then left Shanghu directly for the Capital and applied for a teaching position at our school. As far as I know, she hasn’t had any contact with her family since, nor have they contacted her. I’ve heard... I’ve heard that Professor Ding’s parents have never even met their grandson.”

Listening to Director Zhao, the corner of Du Heng’s eye twitched involuntarily.

From Shanghu to the Capital... and with Ding Yuxue’s qualifications, she just easily landed a job at the Capital University of Traditional Chinese Medicine? Was it really that easy to get hired?

Du Heng couldn’t help but ask, ”So, Director Zhao, you know Professor Ding’s family?”

”Of course,” Director Zhao said, a hint of mystery in his voice. ”Professor Ding’s father is named Ding Zhankui. Have you ever heard that name?”

Ding Zhankui? The name sounded incredibly familiar. Yet, Du Heng couldn’t quite place it at that moment.

Noticing Du Heng’s puzzled expression, Director Zhao prompted him, ”Shanghu Jitong Hospital.”

A flash of insight instantly pierced the fog. Department Director of the Rehabilitation Department at Shanghu Jitong Hospital, Professor and tutor for PhD students at the College of Acupuncture and Massage at Shanghu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a national neurorehabilitation expert, and an Academician of the Engineering Academy!

With Director Zhao’s reminder, Du Heng immediately recalled who Ding Zhankui was.

The name was so familiar for a couple of reasons. Firstly, Ding Zhankui was an expert in traditional Chinese medicine rehabilitation and an Academician of the Engineering Academy. Secondly, the Rehabilitation Department Du Heng had established at the Jinzhou Maternity and Child Care Hospital was modeled after the Rehabilitation Center led by this very Academician Ding.

Additionally, all the things he hadn’t understood before now made perfect sense.

No wonder someone of Ding Yuxue’s apparent skill level could be employed at the Capital University of Traditional Chinese Medicine! No wonder she could obtain an associate professor title! No wonder, even with her actual abilities, she could give lectures at other universities! No wonder...

Isn’t this the same path as that Zhen Shenshen?

Still, this Professor Ding has her merits. At least she doesn’t spend all her time leveraging her father’s name. That’s commendable.

Just as Du Heng processed this, Director Zhao quietly added, ”Let me tell you something else. In the academician selection the year before last, Academician Ding was one of the experts on the selection committee. I hear he’ll be on the committee again for next year’s selection.”

Hmm?

Du Heng couldn’t help but turn to look at Director Zhao.

Is that a hint?

A corner of Director Zhao’s mouth quirked upwards, but he offered no further comment on the matter.

Seeing Director Zhao wasn’t going to elaborate, Du Heng turned his head away. Just then, Director Zhao’s phone rang.

After finishing the call, he informed Du Heng, ”Academician Ding is already on his way. He’s expected to arrive in about three hours.”

Du Heng simply nodded, saying nothing further.

Just then, Secretary Hao, who had been inside for quite some time, finally emerged. ”The situation is far from optimistic,” he said, his expression grim. ”Especially Professor Ding’s husband; his condition is looking very grave. Director Zhao, have you managed to contact Academician Ding?”

So, as expected, these leaders all knew about Ding Yuxue’s background.

Director Zhao nodded. ”The school just relayed a message. Academician Ding is already on his way to the airport and is expected to arrive in the Capital in about three hours.”

”Arrange for his airport pick-up. Make sure everything goes smoothly.”

”I understand.”

Secretary Hao’s knitted brow didn’t smooth out. After a moment’s hesitation, he asked Du Heng, ”Mr. Du, could you take me to see the child?”

Du Heng found Secretary Hao’s request a bit awkward.

He hesitated before replying, ”Secretary, perhaps it’s best not to. The child was admitted for acute kidney injury. Although there’s been some improvement, he still can’t handle any agitation. If we accidentally let something slip or make the child suspicious, it would be detrimental to his recovery.”

Secretary Hao was a leader who valued advice, so he conceded to Du Heng’s point. However, he then suddenly asked, ”The acute kidney injury... you cured it?”

This question almost made Du Heng roll his eyes. I’ve told him twice now, and he still asks? Did he not pay attention, or does he doubt my abilities?

”Yes, it’s under control. It’s no longer a major issue,” Du Heng replied nonchalantly. Then, after a slight pause, he added, ”Secretary, back when I was in Jinzhou, I treated several patients with mental abnormalities triggered by severe trauma, similar to Professor Ding’s current state. The outcomes were quite good. Would you like me to examine Professor Ding?”
