Apocalypse: Master of Soul Beasts

Chapter 543: Chapter 113: Being merciful to the enemy is being cruel to oneself_1

Ray moved quickly and returned to the office in less than three minutes.

”All arranged.”

As Wen Yu put on the overcoat hanging on the rack, he casually took a communicator from his space ring.

”Old man, you stay here. Contact me with the communicator if anything comes up.”

Fran nodded with a smile. He watched Wen Yu and Ray leave together. A silver light flickered in his eyes, swirling unceasingly...

The second chosen one... variables... there are too many...

At this thought, the light in Fran’s eyes dimmed. He chuckled bitterly, took out ”Hamlet,” and slowly flipped to a certain page...

It read: ”When two fierce enemies are locked in a desperate struggle, it is most perilous for a weak and presumptuous individual to step between their blades.”

Two strong enemies...

In Fran’s understanding, these were not Tang Haofei and Wen Yu...

Because... no matter how strong Sequence Number 1 and Sequence Number 2 are... they are no stronger than Heaven! The so-called chosen ones are merely tragic figures whose destinies are not their own. Their end will only be sorrow and tragedy... it can only be sorrow and tragedy...

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP...

The communicator sounded.

Fran answered the call.

”Have you seen the fate of Sequence Number 2?”

Lin Haifeng’s voice came from the communicator.

”Like Tang Haofei, his future is shrouded in an unknown mist...”

Silence followed.

As expected...

”Then, what about his past?”

”Nothing. There’s nothing that could be used as leverage.”

”Understood. Thank you for your hard work.”

He disconnected the call. The famous quote in ”Hamlet” seemed to gleam with a radiant light.

Getting involved in certain matters would only bring blades upon oneself. Fran could only be an observer; he could *only* be an observer!

「...」

Naturally, Wen Yu knew nothing of what had transpired with Fran.

Currently, Wen Yu and Ray were heading towards the eastern wall of the outer city zone.

”The military is responsible for three and a half sides of the four city walls. The remaining small section of the western wall is left to the Three Skulls Society and the Hunters League.”

”Hunters League?”

”A small, loosely organized, and weak group of Independents. It’s said to have been founded by a Sequence leader.”

Wen Yu nodded, not pressing further.

This was to be expected. The military couldn’t completely block the path for Independents and gang members to grow stronger. The opportunity was provided; whether one could seize it depended entirely on oneself.

”The eastern wall is a key enemy attack zone. In the past, both Demon Tribe Breakthrough Achievers and the two Purple Light Spawn and Grow Barriers occurred here. That’s why we established the Frontline Command Post in the east.”

”Oh?”

Hearing this, Wen Yu raised an eyebrow. ”So, that means there are a lot of Demon Fiends in the east?”

Ray nodded in affirmation.

”Alright, final question: can I go on a killing spree here?”

Ray paused for a long moment. ”You can.”

”In a war between species, there are no rules or conventions.”

「...」

The steel-forged city wall glinted silver in the sunlight, exuding an aura of unyielding ruthlessness.

Ascending the blood-stained steps, Wen Yu and Ray walked up. The Yanjing Assembly Site’s outer city zone wall, serving as the first line of defense for the Yanjing Assembly Site, had undergone several expansions by the Cathay military. Its current height was nearly a hundred meters—but this was not an insurmountable obstacle for high-Level Demon Fiends.

So, the most important defensive forces on the wall were not the constantly roaring heavy artillery and machine guns, but the Level 5 professionists stationed every 100 meters. They were responsible for clearing out any high-Level Demon Fiends daring enough to scale the wall.

The hundred-meter-high staircase wasn’t particularly long or short. Wen Yu and Ray ascended as if on a leisurely stroll. Most of the professionists they encountered along the way greeted Ray with smiles, pointedly ignoring Wen Yu beside him.

They had been guarding here for several hours and had no idea who Wen Yu was.

”You seem to hold some status here,” Wen Yu remarked nonchalantly, seeing the soldiers passing by greet Ray with smiles.

Ray chuckled, then pointed to a distant parapet.

”Let’s go take a look over there.”

「...」

Looking down from the hundred-meter-high city wall, the ground below teemed with crawling Demon Groups, resembling swarms of ants.

Heavy artillery boomed from atop the wall. Modified cannons and distant missile launchers obliterated swathes of Demon Fiends that dared to approach attack range. Combined with the various long-range skill attacks from the professionists on the ramparts, the situation devolved into a strange stalemate—perhaps this was also related to the Demon Fiends not having launched a large-scale assault yet.

”They are courting death!”

Wen Yu watched the Demon Fiends below being annihilated in droves—their bodies either blasted into fragments or incinerated by firebombs—and calmly stated the battlefield’s truth.

”But they don’t fear death. Trading the lives of their cannon fodder to deplete the Yanjing Assembly Site’s resources is a worthwhile exchange for the Demon Tribe. If the battle continues like this, in less than ten years, the Yanjing Assembly Site will face a shortage of usable hot weapons.”

Ten years, huh...

Wen Yu pondered silently for a moment, inwardly astonished by the Yanjing Assembly Site’s vast reserves of materiel.

Ray, perhaps sensing Wen Yu’s thoughts, explained from the side, ”With the teleportation portal of Eternal Sky City, resources can be requisitioned from anywhere in the world. Frankly, I never imagined Earth possessed so many hot weapons. I even suspect that if the apocalypse hadn’t occurred, Earth would have eventually been destroyed by human hands anyway.”
