Apocalypse: Master of Soul Beasts

Chapter 541: Chapter 110 You and him, are not the same!_2

The next second...

Unexpectedly, a swath of darkness appeared in the infinitely changing future, and in its very center, a blood-red eyeball slowly surfaced.

”Give it to me! Get back!!!”

...

SPURT... SPURT SPURT...

Crimson blood gushed from Fran’s mouth; the backlash of his skill made his chest feel constricted. This was simply a minor matter; he would be fine after vomiting a few mouthfuls of blood. However, the truly terrifying thing was that eyeball hidden within the endless darkness—ferocious, brutal, and infused with monumental power! Even within the unpredictable Time River, that patch of darkness remained eternal! The terrifying chill and fear of the darkness made Fran gasp heavily for air.

”What’s wrong?” A confused voice reached him from the opposite side.

Fran slowly opened his eyes. Seeing Wen Yu’s puzzled expression, he waited a moment before gently shaking his head. ”I can’t see... your future...”

...

After a long silence, Wen Yu calmly poured Fran a glass of red wine.

”Why? Why can’t you see my future?”

Fran gently shook his head again.

”Has this ever happened before?”

Hearing Wen Yu’s question, Fran hesitated for a moment. Considering the past of Wen Yu he had glimpsed during the Fate Inspection, Fran felt it was best not to hide anything in this matter.

”Tang Haofei—I can’t see his fate either.”

”Oh?” Wen Yu suddenly became more interested. ”What’s the reason? Is it a huge difference in power?”

Fran fell silent again. After a moment, he answered affirmatively, ”Not at all!”

”In both your futures, some terrifying force is protecting you. My ability, no matter how strong, should allow me to see something, even if it’s just the next second. But for you two, I truly can’t see anything at all.”

Hearing Fran’s explanation, Wen Yu slowly lit a cigarette, his right index finger gently tapping the table. He probably understood why... It was because he and Tang Haofei were the same kind of people.

...

”I see. Thank you,” Wen Yu said, a rare expression of gratitude from him.

One had to wonder if Wen Yu would still be thankful once he discovered Fran had seen his past so clearly.

After a moment of silence, Fran spoke again. ”I know you and Tang Haofei must have other issues, things I probably shouldn’t know about. However, there’s something else I think I should tell you. The result shown by the Fate Inspection... The protective power surrounding you and Tang Haofei... is not the same!”

...

”Not the same? What do you mean?”

Fran took a sip of red wine and slowly explained, ”When I tried to probe Tang Haofei’s future, the protective force I encountered was a large orb of light containing tremendous power. It felt very friendly and didn’t attack me at all; it merely pushed me out of the Time River. But yours... yours is different. Your protective power is an eyeball hidden within darkness. It feels wicked, terrifying, and reeks of death. If I hadn’t fled quickly enough, it would have nearly killed me.”

”Not the same?” Wen Yu pressed. ”Are you sure they’re not the same?”

Fran nodded. ”Not at all the same!”

...

A sense of absurdity welled up in Wen Yu’s mind. He slowly extinguished his cigarette, staring intently at Fran’s eyes. The look in them told Wen Yu that Fran wasn’t lying... If so, then why was it different? A conjecture suddenly surfaced in his heart. Could it be...?

...

”Thank you.”

After expressing his gratitude once more, Wen Yu took his wine glass, left his seat, and stood before the window, gazing at the distant scenery.

Understanding Wen Yu’s unspoken intention, Fran moved his stool back to his own table and picked up a copy of ”Hamlet,” beginning to read slowly.

And so, a discussion about the future came to a close.

”By the way, there’s something I need to tell you.” After a moment, Fran spoke up. ”When I was performing the Fate Inspection just now, I saw an extra scene. It seems you have a grudge against a fellow named Wanping?”

Upon hearing this, Wen Yu spun around abruptly, staring directly at Fran. ”You didn’t tell me your ability could see the past!”

In Wen Yu’s eyes, Wanping was nothing more than a minor annoyance—perhaps a bit faster than most. But Fran inspecting his past... that was a worrying development.

Fran shrugged. ”Fate Inspection does indeed allow one to see the past. However, you need to calm down and let me finish...” Seeing Wen Yu’s eyes narrow and murderous intent begin to boil within him, Fran couldn’t help but add, ”The range of Fate Inspection is wide. If I want to view someone’s past, I can always do so. The past isn’t usually something to be hidden, and I wouldn’t casually reveal what you truly want to conceal. I’m not that foolish. Besides, I could have chosen not to tell you any of this, but I believe my honesty deserves at least some understanding on your part.”

Wen Yu kept his eyes narrowed as he seriously assessed this ”dangerous” individual before him. Now he finally understood why this old man, Fran, was held in such high regard by Tang Haofei and Lin Haifeng. Before him, no one had any secrets...

”Then, what did you see in my past?”

Looking at Wen Yu, whose murderous intent had not abated, Fran shook his head with a bitter smile. ”I find your reaction strange. From my observations, you don’t seem to have any secrets worth hiding.”

Wen Yu was taken aback. He quickly reviewed his past in his mind. It seemed there really weren’t many things worth hiding...

...

After a long silence, the oppressive atmosphere gradually dissipated.

”You should know there will be consequences if you reveal certain things about me,” Wen Yu stated. ”The Yanjing Assembly Site won’t be able to stop me if I decide to kill someone.”

”It’s precisely because I’ve seen my own fate that I made the correct choice,” Fran replied with a light laugh.

”I value honesty,” Wen Yu said. ”Now, let’s leave this matter aside. I hope I won’t hear any unpleasant rumors in the future.”

Fran smiled and nodded. This old man was indeed smart—any creature that could perform Fate Inspection on the future would become exceedingly intelligent, even if it were a pig!

”Then, back to our initial topic: what did you see in my past?”

Fran stated calmly, ”Now I understand. You and Tang Haofei are indeed cut from the same cloth. I can’t see your complete pasts; there’s a distinct cutoff point. For Tang Haofei, my vision stops a month before the apocalypse began. For you, it stops a minute before.”

The scenes from his previous life, his childhood... Fran couldn’t see them.

”And apart from that?” Wen Yu asked.

”I only saw Wanping,” Fran replied with a laugh.

Wen Yu also laughed. ”Then let’s talk about Wanping. That little bastard has escaped from my grasp several times!”

...

”Wanping is no longer at the Yanjing Assembly Site.”

”He ran away, huh.” Wen Yu wasn’t surprised. Given the highly publicized nature of him taking over Tang Haofei’s position, Wanping would have to be suicidal not to have heard the news and fled. ”Can you see where he went?”

Fran shook his head, then explained the principles of how Fate Inspection worked. ”Fate Inspection allows me to see the past and the future...” He looked at Wen Yu. ”...for most people. The range of the ability is determined by the user’s power. With my current strength, Fate Inspection can cover more than half of the Yanjing Assembly Site.”

Fran paused before continuing, ”Within that range, I can freely browse anyone’s past or future. So, no matter how much you try to hide, as long as you’re in Yanjing and Lin Haifeng issues the order, your past could be revealed to the military. However, Wanping has already left Yanjing, so I can’t see him right now.”
