Apocalypse: Master of Soul Beasts

Chapter 538: Chapter 109: Taking Over_2

...

”Okay, this meeting is adjourned. I’m heading to the Sea Clan this time with Walter. The defensive area Walter is responsible for will temporarily be covered by Qin Tian. Any problems?”

Wen Yu, seated to Tang Haofei’s right, nodded on Qin Tian’s behalf.

”This trip to establish relations with the Sea Clan might take a month at most, or as little as ten to fifteen days. During this time, Wen Yu will substitute for me. Fran, you will assist Wen Yu. Hmm... Ray.”

Ray’s gaze shifted to Tang Haofei.

”You will be responsible for coordinating between Wen Yu and the subordinate departments.”

This assignment was tantamount to making Ray Wen Yu’s pro-soldier. Needless to say, it was a plum job.

Perhaps it’s also meant to keep an eye on Wen Yu, but that doesn’t matter. If our positions were swapped, I’d do the same thing. Wen Yu thought.

Ray nodded slightly.

”Alright, meeting dismissed.”

...

The half-hour meeting concluded so emptily, leaving Wen Yu deeply frustrated.

In those thirty minutes, if the attending professionists had been let loose on a killing spree, hundreds of thousands, possibly millions, of Demon Fiends would have been obliterated. The super warriors of the Yanjing Assembly Site, comprising the elite of humanity, absolutely possessed such power!

The professionists seated further back filed out of the conference room until only a dozen or so remained. A simple meeting began once more.

Of course, this time there was no need for pointless pleasantries.

”Let me give you a brief introduction.”

Tang Haofei pointed to several people sitting to his left and said to Wen Yu.

”As for Walter, I need not say more; he’ll be going with me this time. Kasu and Vincent are currently in charge of capturing Akad.”

”Capturing Akad? Is he in Yanjing?”

Tang Haofei nodded.

”Some time ago, the leader of the largest underground force in the outer city zone—the Three Skulls Society—reported Akad’s location to Kasu. It’s confirmed he’s in Yanjing. You understand the threat Akad poses; we can’t turn a blind eye to this ticking bomb.”

Wen Yu understood. Tang Haofei’s words weren’t just to introduce Kasu and Vincent’s roles. He was also reminding me not to meddle too much in internal military affairs. During our private talk earlier, when Tang Haofei told me this position was just a figurehead, it wasn’t without a hint of warning—after all, I’m still an outsider!

”Qin Min, Lan Bo, Dugu Jian, Ray, and Marcus are all combatants. They aren’t in charge of anything specific, equivalent to combat units one level below you. During this period, Ray will act as your pro-soldier. If anything comes up, just find Ray.”

The nature of this position was similar to Tang Haofei’s own, or rather, the function of Wen Yu’s position for the time being—they were all like bricks for the revolution, to be moved wherever they were needed.

”Fran.”

Tang Haofei gestured to the white-haired old man beside him.

”Fran will share an office with you. His role is important! Extremely important! However, Fran’s own combat capability isn’t strong. Therefore, Wen Yu, you’ll need to provide some protection for Fran.”

Hearing Tang Haofei’s words, Wen Yu felt a flicker of doubt but nodded nonetheless.

Fran also gave Wen Yu a friendly smile. ”This old man usually doesn’t have much to do and will stay in the office. I won’t cause you any trouble, Sir.”

”That would be for the best.”

Wen Yu nodded back at Fran.

”Fang Bai—Chief Commanding Officer of the military’s frontline forces. He’s responsible for the Yanjing Assembly Site’s defense arrangements. His strength is decent, but his leadership ability is even more outstanding.”

Wen Yu had heard the name Fang Bai before and was vaguely aware of the grievances between him and Kuangliu. This was Wen Yu’s first time meeting him. Fang Bai’s shoulder-length hair and delicate, handsome features, contrasted sharply with a hideous scar on his face, leaving a deep impression on Wen Yu.

He smiled and nodded at Fang Bai as a greeting. Fang Bai, however, merely gave Wen Yu an expressionless glance and made no gesture in return.

The hostility hidden beneath that gentle exterior baffled Wen Yu.

”Fang Bai and Lin Tianxue, formerly known as the military super warrior Xiao Xue, were married three days before the demon plague. Lin Tianxue is Lin Kuangliu’s sister and Lin Haifeng’s biological daughter.”

Tang Haofei explained the origin of this unknown hostility to Wen Yu...

...

What the hell? Wen Yu thought. Other people beat up the junior, and the senior comes for revenge. In my case, I beat up the junior, and someone even more junior shows up.

Faced with this inexplicable hostility, Wen Yu began to consider whether he should just eliminate Fang Bai...

Perhaps sensing the sudden shift in the atmosphere, Fran, standing nearby, narrowed his eyes as if observing something. Then, he gave Fang Bai a pointed look. Simultaneously, a strange and subtle Spiritual Fluctuation reached Fang Bai’s ears: ”Drop those petty thoughts of yours, or you will die.”

Fang Bai fell silent for a moment, sighing inwardly.

Just now, I did indeed consider using my official position to subtly make things difficult for Wen Yu. Given my relationship with Xiao Xue, and my relationship with Kuangliu, I can’t just ignore Kuangliu’s death...

But how could the abilities and warning of a Time Observer be taken lightly! If he says I’ll die, then I’m truly not far from death...

After a moment of silence, Fang Bai slowly extended his hand towards Wen Yu.

”I hope what happened in the past won’t hinder our work together.”

Facing Fang Bai’s proactive gesture of goodwill, Wen Yu slowly nodded.

”Regardless of who was right or wrong in the past, I hope you won’t let hatred cloud your judgment in the future.”

If others don’t provoke me, I won’t provoke them. That was Wen Yu’s guiding principle. Since Fang Bai had taken the initiative to show goodwill, Wen Yu wouldn’t risk a fight to the death with Lin Haifeng by actively seeking trouble with Fang Bai.

...

”Alright, let’s leave it at that. Fran will elaborate on the remaining details with you. Walter and I will head out now. I’m entrusting the safety of the Yanjing Assembly Site to you.”

Wen Yu nodded.

Tang Haofei didn’t delay. He left immediately with Walter—contacting the Sea Clan was a matter best handled sooner rather than later.

Meanwhile, Wen Yu and the others, led by Fran and Ray, headed towards Tang Haofei’s former office.

...

Fang Bai exited the Frontline Command Post building, his handsome features creased with a frown.

After a long moment, he let out a soft sigh...

Instead of heading directly to his post, he walked off in a different direction.

...

He drove a military vehicle to the junction between the inner and outer city zones.

This was a military provisions supply point.

With the Demon Fiends besieging the city, the military had already implemented food rationing. Of course, food wasn’t a major concern. In the early period after the demon plague descended, the military had obtained many good things, including high-yield crops cultivated by support-type professionists, various daily-use items, and even a Secondary Space farm. Coupled with the fact that food supplies for refugees in the outer city zone were repeatedly reduced, food shortages weren’t severe. In fact, for someone of Fang Bai’s rank, the quality of food available was even better than before the apocalypse!

”Sir.” Upon seeing Fang Bai step out of the vehicle, the soldiers guarding the supply point respectfully saluted him.

Fang Bai currently held a very high position in the military. This wasn’t due to his personal strength but rather his leadership and command abilities, honed by the elite education he received from his Aristocratic Family before the apocalypse.

It was no exaggeration to say that if Lin Haifeng were to die now, the most suitable person to succeed him wouldn’t be Tang Haofei, but Fang Bai.

Fang Bai nodded at the guard and directly ordered.

”Get me five pounds of veal, the liver of a ground dragon, and the gall of a flaming bird! Also, add a paw from that Ice Demon Berserker Bear I hunted a while back, and a serving of the Bloody Butcher’s brain marrow!”

Bloody Butcher—a Level 5 Demon Seed that had appeared outside the Yanjing Assembly Site.

Demon Fiends ate humans, but who said humans couldn’t eat Demon Fiends? In fact, for many refugees in the outer city zone, their food primarily consisted of various Demon Beast Corpses.

Thanks to the processing by military talent and Cathay’s master chefs, Demon Fiends also ended up on human dining tables...
