Apocalypse: Master of Soul Beasts

Chapter 534: Chapter 107: Sea King (Added more for Book Friend 20170414150633457)

Upon hearing the news, the first reaction that came to Wen Yu’s mind was that this must have been the work of a divine beast. However, it just didn’t make sense.

The way divine beasts had always gathered their followers was by forcing regular mutant beasts into submission with their innate authority. This was in stark contrast to Tang Haofei’s description of the Sea Clan establishing a slave society. The difference between the two was as vast as heaven and earth!

Regardless of how powerful a divine beast could be, it was essentially a wild creature. However, establishing a nation was different. It signified the formation of morality and law, even if only in embryonic form!

All creatures, including humans, possess a certain degree of wildness... But morality and law—or rules, to be more precise—were the crucial benchmark differentiating wild beasts from intelligent beings, especially when the intelligence of mutant beasts had drastically increased.

Tang Haofei gave a bitter smile upon hearing Wen Yu’s question.

”Actually, the timing isn’t so different. This also happened in our previous life, except I didn’t personally participate. The Sea King also established relations with humans much earlier...”

This was indeed the so-called butterfly effect.

However, Tang Haofei still had yet to directly answer Wen Yu’s question.

After taking a small sip of water, Tang Haofei met Wen Yu’s puzzled gaze and began to explain slowly.

”The Sea King is not a divine beast; it’s just a common sea beast!

”In our previous life, humans conducted targeted research on the Sea King, concluding that it possessed an auxiliary Esoteric Level skill—we can call it ’Enlighten’ for the time being...”

”Its function is to significantly enhance the intelligence of beings from its own species...”

”Therefore, with the Sea King at its core, the emergence of a massive Sea Clan force centered around the Sea King’s own kind has become inevitable. In fact, in our previous life, the nation established by the Sea King—the Deep Blue Empire—was the strongest power on Earth!”

After a prolonged silence, Wen Yu heaved a sigh. ”If it truly is an Esoteric Level skill, then it might be possible...”

Subsequently, another long silence ensued. Wen Yu was at a loss regarding the current situation, and Tang Haofei didn’t have any solutions either. The Deep Blue Empire was an integral part of Earth’s powers. Considering this, along with everything Tang Haofei had experienced in his previous life, eliminating the opposition simply wouldn’t work. Even if it could, they might not have the strength to succeed!

Merely half a year into the apocalypse, the situation that Wen Yu had once dreaded had already arisen.

Not only must the Human Race withstand the pressure from the Demon Fiends, but they must also face the threat posed by Earth’s native life...

Dominant status... Perhaps it ceased to exist the moment the apocalypse descended...

After a while, it was Wen Yu who broke the silence.

”So, you’re essentially taking on the role of a Peace Emissary and heading to this Deep Blue Empire?”

Even when they put their heads together, Wen Yu and Tang Haofei couldn’t devise a solid solution for the Sea Clan issue. Therefore, Wen Yu pragmatically shifted the conversation to the matter at hand.

Tang Haofei nodded. ”The Yanjing Assembly Site will be left in your hands for the time being.”

”So, what am I supposed to do?”

Tang Haofei winked at Wen Yu. ”Be a mascot. Of course, there might be some battles in the early stages.”

The status of Wen Yu and Tang Haofei could now be considered akin to nuclear weapons for the Human Race. What are nuclear weapons? In times of war, they cannot be deployed casually; their greatest use is often as a deterrent against enemies. Therefore, the term ’mascot’ seemed rather apt...

Seeing Wen Yu sitting on the sofa with a furrowed brow, Tang Haofei clapped him on the shoulder. ”Don’t worry, it’s simple. When the time comes, Sequence Number 6 Fran will assist you.”

”That’s not what I’m worried about...”

The sudden emergence of the Sea Clan was what truly had Wen Yu stumped. This entity was of unknown allegiance. Coupled with the limited size of Earth, the probability of conflicts arising was alarmingly high. And what if similar situations were to arise among seemingly ordinary creatures such as rats, cockroaches, cats, or dogs in the future... Just the mere thought made Wen Yu’s teeth ache. This damn world is getting more and more chaotic...

Tang Haofei didn’t stop Wen Yu’s wild conjectures—overthinking such things wasn’t necessarily harmful. And to be frank, Tang Haofei felt quite overwhelmed shouldering everything by himself.

After a long while, Wen Yu sighed deeply. ”Enough thinking about it, it’s useless. Let’s get back to our previous topic, shall we?”

”What topic were we on before?”

”What do I need to do?”

”Ohhh,” Tang Haofei said, feigning sudden realization, then spread his hands. ”I’ve already told you...”

Finally, with Tang Haofei’s repeated explanation, Wen Yu understood what his position entailed.

As the supreme martial force stationed at the Yanjing Assembly Site, Wen Yu’s primary task was... to have no specific tasks. Sequence Number 6, Fran, would assist Wen Yu. Whenever a significant military setback occurred, or was about to occur, Wen Yu simply had to make a trip to resolve it. Such major military setbacks had only happened five times in the past: three early instances involving the Purple Light Spawn and Grow Barriers, one Limit Breakthrough Level demon spawn invasion, and one mission to assassinate the Demon Tribe Commander.

As for situations like wall breaches or local military defeats, the Yanjing Assembly Site’s 32 Sequence-class powerful experts and hundreds of nearly Sequence-class powerful experts were more than capable of handling them. Moreover, these incidents had all happened in the early stages; the current battle situation had reached a stalemate, and Tang Haofei hadn’t taken on a mission in five days.

Overall, the term ’mascot’ was indeed a fitting description for this position.

After outlining the general situation, Tang Haofei acted decisively, leading Wen Yu directly to the adjacent meeting room. The private meeting between Tang Haofei and Wen Yu was over; it was time to get down to business.

The first order of business was, of course, to meet the elite powerful experts who supported the Yanjing Assembly Site—hundreds of them. Even the weakest among them could hold their own against lower-ranked Sequence-class powerful experts for over ten minutes. Thus, to say they were evenly matched would be quite accurate.

「Meanwhile,」

While Tang Haofei and Wen Yu were in their private discussion, in an unassuming small building located in the outer city zone of the Yanjing Assembly Site:

A professionist with an insignia of three skulls on his chest strode quickly into the small building. After passing through countless security checks, he finally stood before a room door.

The small building appeared modest, but its contents were indeed substantial. This was the stronghold of the most powerful clandestine force in the Yanjing Assembly Site’s outer city zone—the Three Skulls Society.

KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK.

A rhythmic knock sounded, followed by a calm voice from behind the door. ”Come in.”

CREAK.

The heavy solid wood door was slowly pushed open by the professionist outside. Gazing at the stern-faced figure seated before him, the professionist lowered his head slightly and reported quickly, ”Boss, Sequence Number 2 just entered the city. His specific reason and purpose are unknown. I felt it was important to report this major development to you immediately, Boss.”

CRACK! A crisp sound echoed as the pen in the Boss’s hand snapped.

After a long silence, the ”Boss” slowly spoke. ”Well done. I understand. You may leave.”

As the professionist slowly exited the room, the Boss—who was, of course, Wanping—clenched his fists tightly, veins bulging on his forehead.

Sequence Number 2... Wen Yu... That name, a nightmare to him...

After a while, Wanping suppressed his violently fluctuating emotions. He then slowly spat out four words, laden with bitterness: ”Persistent, haunting shadow...”
