Wilderness Survival with Druid System

Chapter 420: Chapter 89: Springbok

After listening to Abel, Chen Wen completely gave up the idea of taming the elephant.

Even if it were a special animal, given its life experience as an elephant, it is impossible for it to accept human kindness.

On the contrary, it will always maintain a strong desire to attack humans.

Once such a creature gains intelligence, Chen Wen feels it might even cause more severe losses to the local residents.

If it were because of him that the elephant gained intelligence and caused casualties locally,

Chen Wen would not let such a thing happen.

Human life is above all!

In the face of human rights, all animal protection must take a back seat.

This is a principle that every survivor must know.

Even though Chen Wen has feelings for animals, he also agrees with this principle.

”I understand, I will consider it.”

Having said that, Chen Wen hung up the phone.

Abel’s information came just in time.

It made Chen Wen absolutely clear on how to deal with this elephant.

In the morning, Chen Wen gave up on maintaining the camp.

He was already thinking about moving.

Such a ferocious beast that cannot be tamed must be kept at a distance!

However, moving cannot be rushed. Today, he can only organize his belongings and wait to move back tomorrow.

To ensure today’s safety, Chen Wen took advantage of the early morning to make some more smoke bombs.

Just as Chen Wen finished storing the fifth smoke bomb,

the leopard brothers dragged their tired bodies back.

Seeing their condition, Chen Wen asked Leopard the Second, ”What happened to you guys?”

”The hunt failed.”

Leopard the Second said very embarrassingly, ”We found prey last night and planned to attack them, but they escaped. We chased for a long time but couldn’t catch up. Later, we went to find the prey in the trees, but were surrounded by them. If it weren’t for me bringing my brother out in time, we both would have been injured.”

Chen Wen reached out to comfort the two leopards.

He could roughly guess that the escaped prey were probably antelopes, and those that surrounded the two leopards were possibly baboons.

On this land, though baboon troops are not considered overlords, they qualify as a strong group.

A single leopard can indeed be injured if surrounded by a baboon troop.

”Winning and losing is a common thing in battle, failing to hunt is normal, there’s no need to be discouraged, I have plenty of food here for you.”

Chen Wen said, ”Besides, I’m planning to move. I’ll pack everything clean today and leave tomorrow.”

Hearing this, Leopard the Second immediately conveyed Chen Wen’s message to Leopard the First.

Leopard the First was quite happy about being able to go back.

It was clear that it really liked the territory over there.

Seeing Leopard the First becoming active again, Chen Wen also felt much happier.

The gloom of being forced to move dissipated a lot.

However, Leopard the Second still looked dejected.

After gaining intelligence, it remembers failures for a longer time.

The feeling of loss also lasts longer.

Seeing this, Chen Wen said, ”Since we are leaving tomorrow, do you want to try hunting again today?”

Leopard the Second shook its head somewhat dejectedly.

”This time, I’ll go with you.”

Hmm~ hmm?!

Leopard the Second immediately perked up.

It had some understanding of Chen Wen’s combat abilities, and this agile biped, at times, was even stronger in combat than the two brothers combined!

If they could get the biped to join the hunt, the difficulty would surely plummet!

Leopard the Second immediately asked, ”When?”

Chen Wen looked at the time; there wasn’t much to do at the camp now.

So he said, ”I can go anytime, what about you?”

Leopard the Second, shedding its dejected demeanor, barked twice at Leopard the First.

Both leopards immediately stood up, excitedly looking at Chen Wen.

Their demeanor was no different from a dog eager to go for a walk.

Well then, walk the dog—no, walk the leopard!

...

Since they were going out to hunt, they needed to prepare.

Chen Wen took his long spear and machete.

Also, the javelin, tied with a rope on his back.

”What’s your usual hunting method?”

Chen Wen, with only the camera on, let himself go completely and kept asking Leopard the Second questions on the way.

Leopard the Second thought for a moment and said, ”Two methods. The first method, we slowly stalk the prey, and when close enough, we suddenly leap out to chase and bite them to death.”

”The second method, we hide in trees and wait for prey to pass underneath, then jump down from the trees and bite them to death.”

”Most of the time, I like jumping from trees. This method allows us to kill the prey without them being prepared, which is safer and has a high success rate. But my brother likes chasing prey. He’s very fast, and most prey can’t escape his pursuit.”

Chen Wen nodded, understanding the leopards’ hunting behavior.

Compared to their cheetah relatives, the leopards’ hunting method is somewhat like a tiger’s.

They focus more on opportunities.

And they can flexibly adjust their hunting plan based on opportunities.

Therefore, Chen Wen planned to determine the hunting strategy based on their hunting methods.

He instructed Leopard the Second to pay attention to the surrounding smells to locate prey first.

After walking for about half an hour, just as they were about to reach the open grassland,

Leopard the First suddenly let out a very faint hiss.

Leopard the Second responded with the same hiss.

After a brief exchange, they looked at Chen Wen.

”We found prey, right in front of the grassland!”

Upon hearing this, Chen Wen deftly climbed up a nearby tree and observed the prey on the grassland through the gaps between the leaves.

Moments later, Chen Wen furrowed his brows.

”You really know how to pick, this is a very difficult prey to hunt.”

On the grassland, a group of gazelle-like creatures was leisurely resting.

However, they weren’t gazelles but springboks, a type of antelope excellent at jumping.

How good are they at jumping?

Springboks can easily jump to heights of three or even four meters and can jump five or six times in a row.

Besides the faster cheetahs, they are rarely directly hunted by other predators on this grassland.

Apart from leopards and crocodiles that can use the terrain for surprise attacks, most other predators only hunt slower antelopes.

The speed of adult springboks is indeed too fast.

Moreover, their perception ability is quite strong, and they have a unique way of warning.

When alarmed and running, a longitudinal fold of skin along the back center suddenly expands, showing a prominent white ridge.

Upon seeing this white ridge, other members will immediately display the same ridge and flee quickly.

For such animals, it’s tough for humans to hunt them without long-range weapons or traps.

Because you simply can’t catch up.

After communicating this information to the leopards, Leopard the Second also realized that it seemed to have selected a mission with hellish difficulty.

As it was hesitating whether to target the springboks,

the quick-tempered Leopard the First could not hold back and started stalking, stepping out of the woods.

It planned to attack the springboks directly.

Chen Wen didn’t stop it; he wanted to see how Leopard the First hunted.

Meanwhile, he also took the opportunity to observe the behavior and characteristics of the springboks.

See if he could pinpoint some weaknesses of the springboks and hunt based on those weaknesses.

Seeing Chen Wen not stopping him, Leopard the Second simply joined Chen Wen at the edge of the woods, observing how its brother hunted.
