System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

”Eight years is enough time for me to know my own interests, right?”

”If I hadn’t worked in orthopedics for long, you might call my words hypocritical, and I’d concede. But I’ve been doing this for years; I really know my own interests.”

”Interest is like drinking water; only the person drinking it knows hot or cold.”

Lu Cheng’s response didn’t have any flaws.

But Liu Xia felt Lu Cheng was being somewhat hypocritical: ”Xiao Lu, what you’re saying doesn’t make sense. Aren’t you doing tendon suturing in the ER?”

”Isn’t tendon suturing also a standard case in our orthopedics department?”

Lu Cheng immediately tapped the table, gently laughed, and said, ”Director Liu, can I cautiously apply to change your wording?”

”Let me point out that while tendon suturing is a standard case in orthopedics, it’s not a standard case in our hospital’s orthopedics. Do you agree?”

Peng Haibo and Liu Xia exchanged a glance without responding.

A standard case means a case the department can routinely handle.

For instance, fractures and lumbar disc herniation in orthopedics.

”So, based on the hospital’s current arrangements, tendon injuries are a standard case for our ER,” Lu Cheng said calmly.

Lin Qianlong was secretly delighted; you orthopedics people can’t perform a surgery, and you try to claim credit?

You even tried to provoke Xiao Lu, and now you’ve brought trouble on yourselves?

Although Peng Haibo and Liu Xia felt embarrassed, they didn’t dare to rebut anything.

Tendon suturing in orthopedics has caused so many issues over time, even though Liu Xia is from the second ward of orthopedics, he felt a bit ashamed right now.

But if you can’t master a technique that others can, you’ll feel disadvantaged.

Peng Haibo continued, ”But tendon injuries are a standard case for our orthopedic hand surgery subspecialty.”

”Xiao Lu, don’t switch concepts.”

Lu Cheng nodded and said, ”Director Peng, can you tell me who is part of the hand surgery subspecialty group in our hospital’s orthopedics? I’d like to hear.”

Lu Cheng was indeed from orthopedics, so he knew hand surgery might not be a distinct specialty, but there must be a specialized team, right?

Otherwise, how could it be routine?

Peng Haibo rubbed his lips and tongue together, unable to speak...

Liu Xia timely clarified the foundation, tapping the table: ”But in any case, it’s unreasonable for Director Lin Qianlong to say all the microsurgery equipment should be moved to the ER surgery room.”

Liu Xia glanced at Lin Qianlong: ”These are the instruments we orthopedics applied for.”

Lu Cheng’s eyes flickered, and the light in his eyes dimmed.

It turns out today’s situation wasn’t initiated by Peng Haibo and Liu Xia but by Lin Qianlong’s proactive action.

Lu Cheng now understood why Liu Xia would unite with Peng Haibo.

Lin Qianlong wanted to move another set of hand surgery instruments to the ER, no wonder Peng Haibo and Liu Xia were so unified in opposition.

Lin Qianlong promptly said, ”Director Peng, may I correct you that orthopedics’ application for equipment only means reporting to the equipment and logistics departments, and it doesn’t signify ownership by your department.”

”If you’re not going to use them, why let them sit idle?” Lin Qianlong tore away the fig leaf.

Bao Liming seriously considered it and replied, ”Director Lin, isn’t there already one in your ER surgery room?”

Lin Qianlong quickly complained, ”Director Bao, one isn’t enough. After a while, Xiao Lu and I will start replanting severed limbs. What do we do about tendon injuries then?”

”Xiao Lu can’t carry the microsurgery equipment to different rooms, right?”

”These matters must be planned ahead, and I’m considering this for our patients.”

”I promise when orthopedics formally starts microsurgeries, I’ll return it right away.”

”No second opinion.” Lin Qianlong spoke quite eloquently.

Hand surgeries and Peng Kun being abandoned by Tong Yuan’an were sore points for Peng Haibo, who finally pretended to be angry: ”If you move all the equipment away, how will our department learn surgeries?”

Lin Qianlong was completely unfazed: ”Will leaving them there lead to mastering?”

”Our department’s Dr. Lu Cheng also developed surgical skills without the microsurgical equipment, didn’t he?”

”You still want to practice surgeries on patients?”

After saying this, Lin Qianlong left a trap.

Seizing the opportunity, Liu Xia suddenly said, ”Who knows if Lu Cheng mastered the skills in orthopedics with the intention of revenge?”

Lin Qianlong was momentarily at a loss because he also thought Lu Cheng might have such a possibility. Otherwise, how could Lu Cheng learn so quickly in just a few months? It seemed unreasonable.

While Lin Qianlong was pondering how to clarify for Lu Cheng, Lu Cheng spoke up: ”Director Liu, are you saying I learned from you?”

Liu Xia averted his gaze, responding, ”No, I wouldn’t.”

Lu Cheng then turned his gaze to Peng Haibo: ”Director Peng, what do you think?”

Peng Haibo also fell silent, lowering his gaze.

A student can surpass their teacher, but only if the teacher has indeed taught them.

Peng Haibo’s tendon suturing wasn’t systematic; it was just supported by basic skills. Even shameless, he couldn’t claim to have taught it.

Since neither Peng Haibo nor Liu Xia had taught him, what exactly did Lu Cheng learn at the training unit without revealing anything?

”I learned surgeries just to serve emergency patients.”

”Some patients prefer local consultations and don’t want to travel, nor do they have high requirements for surgical quality.”

”I just want to fill this gap. Why do you care where I learned it from?”

”Even if I learned it from a training unit, does that call my character into question?” Lu Cheng asked earnestly.

”Director Bao, we don’t investigate this in our hospital, right?”

Hearing Lu Cheng speak like this, Peng Haibo couldn’t hold back any longer, pointing at Lu Cheng, ”Yes, you’re noble, you’re impressive. How do you explain doing manual fracture reduction in the ER?”

Manual fracture reduction directly affected Peng Haibo’s surgery volumes.

Lu Cheng raised his hand, voice elevated, ”Director Peng, who before me in our hospital was doing manual reductions?”

”And who taught it to me? You?”

Peng Haibo said nothing.

Lu Cheng then looked toward Director Bao Liming: ”Director Bao, if a technique isn’t practiced, is it considered a gap?”

”If there’s a technical gap, can I, Lu Cheng, fill it?”

”The hospital’s mission emphasized in meetings, is it still valid or not?”

”Director Bao, isn’t the hospital’s policy to address gaps, allowing us to learn any technique other specialties don’t know? Can we do it?”

”Isn’t it set like this?”

Once again, Peng Haibo was left speechless by Lu Cheng’s detailed, airtight arguments.

Manual fracture reduction impacted the orthopedic surgery volume, yet it did fill a technical gap at Renmin Hospital.

Isn’t manual reduction a technical skill?

Bao Liming raised his hand, ”All right, all right, let’s stop arguing. Dr. Lu’s choice of workplace falls within our hospital.”

”The core of learning techniques is to serve patients, not about revenge or anything.”

”Director Peng, Director Liu, Director Lin, and Dr. Lu’s stance is clear too. As for the microsurgical equipment pack, if orthopedics needs it, it can be returned at any time.”

”What else is there to say? If you want to use the equipment pack, then go learn.”

”Letting it sit idle isn’t wasting hospital money?”

Suddenly unsure whether being unreasonable or having another motive, Peng Haibo spoke, ”Director Bao, I actually want to train Xiao Lu, even to cultivate him as the next director of our orthopedics.”

”He has such capability, such qualifications.”

”Since I’ve said it openly, I’ll follow through.”
