Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 48: Chapter 12: Rumors Everywhere — Open the Gates and Break the Walls of Suspicion

Less than ten days after the defective-stone incident, rumors began to surface in every corner of Akhetaten.

The rumors first appeared near the river-harbor pier. A few fishwives, huddled at the morning market, whispered among themselves that the new capital’s foundations had been laid over an ancient underground river, and that the ”angry water-vein” had been cut off—soon the entire city would sink into the mud. The woman who led the talk was a stout, dark-skinned woman in her forties, her hands permanently crusted with fish scales and salt from years of selling Nile perch. Her husband, a quiet, unassuming ferryman who worked for Meru’s river transport, had been poling his boat back from the east bank two nights earlier when his pole had struck submerged obstacles twice in the shallows. Both times it came up reeking of sulfur. In the old wisdom of the West Bank, any ground that gave off a strange smell meant the old gods had been angered. She told the story with the weight of someone who had already lived through disaster once, grinding her heel into the loose sand as if she were not describing a city collapsing but a curse she herself had barely escaped—something that was bound to happen, and better to step away from before it did.

The rumor spread like water seeping into cracks, moving outward in every direction. By the time it reached the quarry, it had transformed into something else: Lu Zhu had changed the direction of the quarry’s extraction, defying the ancient stone-gods and angering the spirits of the earth beneath. The quarrymen were especially sensitive to talk like this. They had an old habit: before opening a new face, they would strike the stone three times with their chisels—not to test it, but to announce themselves to whatever slept beneath, to tell the sleeping things that the mountain was about to be opened. A tall quarryman told the story to his tent-mates over their evening meal, chewing a saltless flatbread as he spoke: ”Have you heard? The old temple priests say there are ghost rivers running under this whole place, filled with the bones of the dead.”

When the rumor reached the residential ward to the north, it grew sharper and more terrifying: the high priests of the Amun temple had already performed a divination—placing sacred scarabs in a mixture of river sand and soil samples taken from Akhetaten’s new dwelling sites, watching the direction and speed at which the scarabs burrowed through the sand—and the omens foretold that the new city would not survive three rainy seasons. The common farmers could not understand foundation bearing capacity or drainage gradients. But they understood those seven words: ”the priests have already divined it.” In their experience, the priest’s word was the god’s word. Families who had already registered to move in began to waver, approaching their block leaders in private to ask whether they could postpone their move. One young mother—she had heard the rumor whispered in her ear by her husband’s aunt—spent an entire afternoon in silence, saying nothing, simply touching and retouching the cistern wall at her unfinished doorway, scraping her fingernails along the mortar joints. The joints still held fresh lime, drying, and a fine white powder came away on her fingertips, leaving a trail of tiny beads. She could smell nothing damp, nothing musty. But she trusted her ears more than her nose. And her ears were still ringing with what the aunt had whispered.

By the third day, even the blacksmith’s shop in the artisan ward had begun to murmur. A young apprentice staggered back from the quarry with a freshly dressed limestone block—the block heavy on his shoulder, the edge jostling against his tool-belt with each step—and the first words out of his mouth when he set it down on the dressing platform were aimed at the old master: ”They say the new city wasn’t blessed by the temple priest before the first stone was laid—if the priest won’t bless the ground, how can it be safe?” The old blacksmith—a Theban who had settled on the West Bank ten years ago and had long since lost the use of his left eye to a spray of hot sparks—wiped his hands on his leather apron and grunted: ”Who cares who blessed the first stone? Get back to work.”

But not everyone was like the old blacksmith. Those who had families to move, fields to plant, children to wake and water each morning—the pillars of their faith were thin and fragile, and a single plausible rumor could shake them.

Kamon first heard the full extent of the rumors at the quarry’s dressing platform. He and Hapy had just finished reconciling the last of the defective-stone records—Hapy was stacking the final papyrus sheets, the loose edges flapping in the wind—when a mason came running up, the sweat on his brow still un-wiped, his fingers twisting nervously at the cord of his belt. Before he had even reached Kamon, the words were already spilling out. Kamon’s fist came down on the stone table beside him with a crack that sent a row of wooden wedges scattering across the floor, one of them rolling to the edge of the platform and tumbling down the slope until it struck a half-empty stone-dust bucket with a dull wooden clang. ”This is Nekhem’s work! Tailor-made rumors! Just like the saboteurs—every word is designed!” His voice was raw, but beneath the anger lay exhaustion: they had barely finished cleaning up the defective-stone affair, had barely had time to draw breath, and now the next blow had already landed, wrapped in a different skin. He set his hammer down on the table and, without thinking, his thumb found the hammer handle and tapped twice—quick, uneven, missing half a beat.

This enemy was different from the last. The defective stone had been traceable—batch numbers, signatures, a paper trail, a record. This one was like smoke, rising from every direction at once, with no single source, spreading by nothing but the natural power of human fear and the habits of memory that clung to old terrors.

Lu Zhu heard the news in the survey shelter. Meru stood beside him, holding a fresh set of riverbank flood-level records from the dike test sections, his finger tracing the water-level curves across the papyrus. Lu Zhu’s right index finger was moving slowly along the curve of the four data sets, left to right, when a clerk pushed through the reed-mat door. A small shower of dry mud-flakes fell from the top edge of the mat as it swung, dust catching in the clerk’s eye. He blinked, squinting, and reported the full spread of the rumor—from the river-harbor pier to the quarry to the residential ward—in clear, methodical detail, naming every variant and every group it had touched.

Lu Zhu listened without interrupting, nodding at each step of the report—not in agreement, but in tracking the chain of transmission, fitting each piece into his own mental map of how the story was moving. When the clerk reached the part about the ”temple divination,” Lu Zhu’s finger paused on the flood-level chart for a moment—then continued. He did not order a manhunt for the rumor’s source. He did not punish anyone who had spread it. He simply lifted his head and said, to Sobekh, who had been standing at the back of the shelter the whole time, his short ruler still in hand: ”A city gate fire spreads fastest not because of the fire itself—but because no one is allowed to see it. Rumors are the same.”

Sobekh’s thumb rubbed the brass collar of his short ruler, the metal dark with the oil of his fingers. The brass ring caught the lamp’s low flame in brief, intermittent flashes—a spark, a pause, a spark. Lu Zhu saw the ruler stop turning. ”What do you propose?”

Lu Zhu looked past the shelter’s open doorway, through the gap in the reed mat where the clerk had left it half-pushed aside, at the gravel path outside where the morning sun had already begun to burn off the last of the night’s coolness. A cart loaded with sand was being unloaded in the distance, its wooden frame groaning as the load shifted. He lifted his eyes from the flood-level chart. ”Don’t try to stop it. Open the gates. Let them come and see.”

Sobekh asked only one question: ”When?” ”Three days. But preparation starts tomorrow. We can’t afford to wait.”

Lu Zhu pulled a charcoal stick from his pouch and, on the back of the flood-level record sheet, wrote out a preparation list. He wrote small and fast, the characters cramped but legible, pressing hard enough to leave grooves in the papyrus. First: assign a guide at every critical site—someone who had worked on that site with their own hands, who could not lie and would not need to. Second: design a route that anyone could walk barefoot from end to end—the gravel graded fine enough not to cut, the surface dry, no sharp edges. Third: prepare three ”touchable demonstrations”—things people could press their palms against: a dry sand layer above a drainage channel, the temperature and humidity reading of a granary wall interior, and a side-by-side touch comparison with an old-style leaking granary wall. Fourth: set up a registration table at the camp entrance and mark the route with rope-lines so no one would get lost. He finished writing, looked at Sobekh, and added a final line: ”Better to let them come with their questions—and let the things themselves answer. If you want people to believe, don’t block their ears. Put things in their hands. Once someone has touched a dry wall, no amount of wet talk will ever make them fear damp again.”

The message spread in less than half a day. It was not spread by official proclamation—it was spread by Meru’s transport crews. Meru’s men were the fastest rumor-spreaders on the Akhetaten ground, passing every day between the building-material depots and the scattered villages, knowing every dock-hand, every miller’s wife, every girl washing clothes at the canal. Meru added his own private arrangement: from his own funds, he paid each transport man an extra two jugs of thin beer—not for drinking, but so that they could, on the return journey, without feeling the pinch, swing by and bring along familiar faces for the ride. He knew that a person who walked to the gate with a friend was braver than one who walked alone.

That night, Kes mapped the inspection route by lamp-light in his narrow survey shelter—a half-walled hut open on two sides, built to shelter him from the wind while he worked out gradients. He measured every section of the route with the same care he gave to a drainage gradient, using his old measuring cord, walking the distances again and again. The two spots he worried about most—the narrow passage into the granary cluster and the gravel ramp up to the quarry—were marked and widened, the gravel bed extended, and at the narrowest bend he added a handrail of bamboo rope, borrowed from Nefer’s supply team. ”You owe me three lengths,” Nefer said, handing over the rope, her elbow bumping his as she did. ”Next time the women’s workshop needs fencing cord, you’ll get Kamon to cover it for me.” Kes remembered her face—smiling, but never giving an inch on the numbers—and nodded twice, quickly.

On the morning of the open inspection, before the sun had fully cleared the eastern ridge, people began to gather at the camp gate. The sky had not yet fully brightened—the low sandstone ridge held only a thin edge of gray-orange, the desert night’s chill still clinging to the sand—and a layer of mist, thin as breath, drifted up from the river channel, evaporating as it touched the dry sand of the bank. At first just a few porters with empty fish-baskets, their baskets still dripping thin brown water from the morning catch, then women who had walked from the West Bank, their arms empty of olive baskets, their faces wrapped in old scarves against the dust. By the time the sun reached the second hour, the registration line had bent back on itself three times. Children were passed over the heads of the crowd into their mothers’ arms. A young, slightly lame boy—he was no more than fourteen—sold a pair of palm-fiber sandals to a visitor who had forgotten his own, taking three thin copper coins in return, hopping on one foot with pleasure.

Hapy stood at the quarry’s main access corridor. Lu Zhu had assigned him to explain the quarry process. He had memorized his notes—he had rehearsed them the night before, chewing a dry flatbread as he recited, the key points written on a scrap of papyrus taped to the wall of his shelter. He had even drawn a small diagram on the shelter wall with charcoal. But when the crowd surged toward him, larger than he had ever imagined, his mouth went dry as lime. Then he saw a face in the crowd—a gray-haired grandmother, one hand pressed over her mouth to keep out the stone dust, the other clamped tight around her grandson’s shoulder. The boy was perhaps five or six, barefoot, his face smeared with charcoal and dried porridge, his head shaved in the style of a farm child with a single tuft at the crown. He was craning his neck, his eyes wide as the quarry pit itself, trying to see everything at once. Hapy felt something in his chest shift—something that had been wound tight without his knowing it. He remembered his own mother, standing at the edge of a quarry just like this one, holding his hand while he craned his neck to see the stone being cut—he had been no older than this boy, thin as a reed, his mother’s hand tight on his arm. He had stood just like this, day after day, watching the men cut and haul, until he had walked the same path himself.

He stopped reciting the prepared speech. He set the rolled-up paper on the stake beside him—the gesture itself a small surrender—and crouched down, bringing his eyes level with the boy’s. ”Look—the ground under your feet is dry. You know why? Because before we cut a single block, we dug this channel—” he pointed to the narrow stone-lined groove beside the slope ”—two whole days before we started the deep pit. Water has to go first. Before the stone, before the workers, before anything—the water has to be shown the way.”

The boy followed his finger. His eyes locked onto the groove. ”I know!” he shouted. ”It’s to keep the stone from cracking in the summer heat!” ”Yes—but not just that. It also keeps the stone from turning soft after the spring floods.” Hapy’s voice caught for a moment—not from embarrassment, but because the boy’s words, ”I know,” had carried him back to his own childhood, standing at the quarry edge, catching half-understood phrases from the grown-ups and thinking he understood everything. Then he straightened and explained the rest—how the water had to go first, how the gravel slope was angled to drain every rain into the channel, how the stone faces would stay dry, how the water would not soak into the rock and split it—and he told it not as a lecture but as a story, using the simplest comparisons he could find, drawing with his hands in the air as he spoke. A gray-bearded old quarryman, who had come to the site half-convinced the new city was built on lies, listened for a full watch before turning away, and as he went, he said nothing—but he did not say no. The laughter of women on the east slope of the quarry echoed off the stone walls—not the polite laughter of courtesy, but the long, deep laughter that comes from the belly, that folds the eyes into crescents and shakes the shoulders, and it shattered the heavy, rumor-laden air into a spray of broken sound that bounced from wall to wall.

At the residential ward, the display was different. Sobekh had arranged more touchable demonstrations. The crowd slowed as it reached the drainage feeder-channel junction. A middle-aged farmer stopped at the inspection hatch and would not step forward, his knees trembling slightly. The woman guiding him—a young volunteer from Nefer’s team—stepped onto the hatch herself and stamped her heel hard against the gravel cover, then smiled at him. ”The stones are still holding,” she said. He crouched, pressed his palm flat against the cover—not a light touch, but a pressure, the same pressure he had used for years to test his own mud-brick floor after a rain, a pressure that had been printed into his body by years of damp. He pressed, held, lifted. He stood, raised his hand—it was dry. Only a few loose grains of sand clung to his palm. ”It’s dry!” he said. ”My hand is dry!” He raised it above his head for the crowd to see. The men who had been spreading the water-table rumor backed away, their faces reddening. One of them, stepping back, set his foot into a shallow puddle of mud—the remnant of a morning spill—and his sandal sank with a wet slap. He looked down at his mud-spattered leg, his face flushing dark, and an old companion beside him clapped him on the shoulder and said, dryly: ”Next time, look where you’re stepping before you speak.”

At the prototype granary, Baher’s display was the most dramatic. Twelve old clay buckets, each of a different age and shape, filled with Nile water, were lined up along the wall base. He poured the first, then the second, then the third. By the seventh, the crowd was murmuring: ”Enough, enough—you’ll soak the whole wall!” Baher did not stop. He kept the bucket-men pouring until all twelve buckets were empty against the wall, not a single drop held back. The water pooled, spreading in a shallow sheet across the gravel. Baher stepped back and called a man forward from the edge of the crowd—a man who had been standing alone, watching in silence the whole time, his hands clasped in front of him. He was the father of a boy who had been treated by the West Bank medicine-priest—a boy who had been sick since before they came to Akhetaten. Every night, the father checked his son’s reed mat for dampness, holding a lamp close to the wall edges, but he had never trusted his own hand, because the old temple priest had said the city’s ground was cursed.

Baher told the man: ”Press your hand against the wall. From the top down. Feel it yourself.”

The man stepped forward and knelt. He pressed his palm against the inner wall, starting high and working his way down—slowly, deliberately, as if he were reading the wall by touch. When he reached the base, he closed his eyes and did it again, from the bottom up. Then he straightened, his voice trembling: ”Inside—it’s really dry.” He wasn’t speaking to the crowd. He was speaking to himself. To the months of sleepless nights he had spent checking his son’s reed mat for dampness. To the priest’s words he had never been able to forget. The words came out again, softer this time: ”It’s dry. The wall is dry.” Baher straightened, brushed the mud from his tunic, and said: ”A dry foundation means fewer cold-damp illnesses, fewer lung-coughs. Your son was sick before he came here. This city hasn’t made him worse—it’s kept him on dry ground.” He paused. ”When you go home tonight, turn over his sleeping mat. Tell your family: the old dampness came from the West Bank. It won’t climb back up onto your bed here.”

The man’s hands—the hands of a man who had gripped a boat-pole for years—rose to his face and wiped, roughly. There was red in the corners of his eyes, not tears but the flush of something long forgotten: belief. He reached into his tunic and drew out a small, worn leather amulet—a deer-horn fragment, strung on a cord—that he had carried from his old house on the West Bank, and laid it gently on the granary’s foundation stone. No one touched it. Then the crowd pressed forward—people who had been standing at the edges all day, uncertain, afraid—and knelt to touch the wall, to press their palms against the ground. A round-faced woman pulled a wooden spindle from behind her ear, crouched, and pushed its tip into the mortar joint at the wall’s base—the same test she had used for years in her damp West Bank house, pushing a wooden probe into the wall to see how far the damp had climbed. The tip stopped against the solid mortar. She pulled it out—dry, clean. She raised the spindle to the crowd behind her. ”Don’t listen to talk! This won’t make up stories!” A round of cheers went up.

By evening, the sun had set behind the Nile’s western palm grove, and the inspection crowd had far exceeded all estimates. Nefer had set up food-distribution tables—four water stations running in parallel, two rows of flatbreads and date cakes, dried barley flakes in bowls—and Tia had re-routed the crowd to avoid bottlenecks. Over three hundred people had passed through the site that day, with more coming and going in waves from midday to nightfall. No one got lost. No one slipped and fell. Within a week, the number of volunteers joining the construction crews had increased by nearly a third.

Through it all, Lu Zhu stood at the far end of the inspection route, at the edge of the gravel platform—a low, raised platform that had been built as a survey point, looking out over the whole site. He did not speak. He did not explain. He simply stood there, his expression open, watching every person who emerged from the site—some laughing, some still rubbing the wall-dust from their fingertips, some turning back at the platform’s edge for one last look at the drainage outfall.

As the last light touched the sand before him, the fishwife’s husband—the one who had spread the first rumor at the river-harbor pier, the quiet ferryman who had barely spoken a word through the whole affair—pushed his cart to the edge of the platform and stopped. In the cart were a few unsold Nile catfish. He stood before Lu Zhu, looking at the sand display laid out on the platform—sand taken from the residential ward’s foundation, placed there to demonstrate the moisture barrier. He bent, slowly, and pressed his palm into the sand. Then he straightened and said: ”The old temple men said you stole stone from the granary foundations. Was that true?”

His voice was not accusatory. It was the voice of a man asking to be released from a fear he had carried for too long—a man who had spent his life on the water, who knew every shift of the river’s current, who had learned that water does not lie.

Lu Zhu did not answer directly. He called Hapy over—Hapy, who had just finished showing the children the quarry channel, still dusted with white stone powder, a smear of pale dust across his cheek. ”Take him to see the granary foundation stones. Let him touch them himself.” Hapy nodded and led the fishwife’s husband to the granary display, pointing out the grading marks and the alignment lines as they walked.

Later. The fishwife’s husband bent down, pressed his palm to the foundation stone—cool, dry, the grain uniform. He traced the edge from the top to the bottom, then pressed his hand against the wall base. Dry. He touched it again, checked the joint, checked again. He did not speak. He simply lifted the two remaining catfish from his cart—still fresh, their gills faintly damp—and set them on the distribution table beside the woman stacking bowls, nodded once to her, and turned his empty cart around. He walked back toward the river-harbor pier, slowly, much more slowly than he had come that morning.

That night, Sobekh wrote the weekly dispatch. Before he set his charcoal to the papyrus, he paused, his short ruler resting against the ink-well. He drew the charcoal across the blank sheet and wrote a single line: ”A rumor’s life, on the floor of a dry granary, does not last as long as a single incense stick.”

The lamp flame burned low. The ink spread into the papyrus fibers like slow, patient roots, each stroke following the natural grain of the paper.

Late that night, Kamon walked out of the guild shelter, his hammer slung over his shoulder on a linen pad. Lu Zhu sat on the stone platform outside the encampment, the night wind already cooling the edges of his cloak. He said—not like an engineering director, but like a man settling the day’s final account: ”I’ve lived on the West Bank long enough to know: some people still don’t understand that the dryness of their wall was built into it from the first course, not granted by some spirit. Some people have never touched another person’s wall. They trust their ears, not their hands. They trust the voice that says ’don’t look, don’t ask.’” He paused. The wind caught his cloak and pressed it gently against his shoulder. ”A house speaks for itself. You can say a thousand times that the foundations are dry—but it means nothing until someone presses their palm against the wall. We keep building.”

Five days after the open inspection, the fishwife’s husband returned with his cart—empty, this time. He stopped at Tia’s registration table and said he and his brother’s family—seven people in all—wanted to move to Akhetaten. Tia looked up from her register, recognized him, and said nothing. She simply processed the registration forms for both families and filed them in separate street folders. As the fishwife’s husband passed through the camp gate, he met Sobekh. He stopped, wiped his hands on his coarse linen trousers, and did not know how to begin. Sobekh did not speak. He drew his short ruler from its leather case, turned it once in his hand, and pointed toward the granary cluster on the eastern edge of the site. ”Those walls are dry,” he said. ”You touched them.” The fishwife’s husband nodded. ”Then what are you afraid of?” The man thought for a long moment. Then he said, slowly, a line he must have been turning over in his mind for days: ”I’m not afraid of the ground anymore. What I’m afraid of now—is people.” Sobekh slid the ruler back into its case. The brass collar struck the leather edge with a single, clean click—light, but in the empty camp square, it sounded like a nail being driven home.

Lu Zhu did not see this. That afternoon he had been in the survey shelter, finalizing the Nubian timber route with Meru. When he heard about it, he was sitting on the stone platform outside the survey shelter, a spent charcoal stick still in his hand, looking out toward the residential ward. He said something to himself, quietly. Kamon passed by at that moment and caught only the last word. That word was ”believed.”

The second line Sobekh wrote in his dispatch that night was shorter than the first: ”The rumor died on the road. The people stayed. This city now has people who speak for it.”
