Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 3: Chapter 3: The Shrine — A Hidden Priest and a Sky-Marked Map

Meru delivered the unsealing permit on the seventh evening.

His Nubian attendant arrived at dusk on a donkey, carrying two reed baskets — one packed with quality Punt cinnamon, the other holding a palm-sized piece of limestone carved with the Amun Temple Land Office’s authorization stamp. Nekhem’s personal seal was pressed into the bottom: the profile of a ram’s head, sacred beast of Amun. The carving was crisp, no wear on the edges. Nekhem did not issue unsealing permits often. The favor Meru had traded for this — one sack of cinnamon — was heavier than Lu Zhu had estimated.

”Where’s your master?” Lu Zhu asked.

”Closing warehouse contracts with three spice merchants. Says he won’t make it back tonight — tells you to go ahead.” The attendant handed him a second item: a folded square of palm-fiber paper, pressed unexpectedly thin and tough. Nubian handmade — not the Egyptian reed-paper he was used to. Meru had sketched a rough map in charcoal.

The abandoned shrine lay deep in the palm grove west of the river, near a dry old riverbed. Half an hour’s walk from the main road. Meru had scrawled at the map’s edge: There’s a lamp inside.

Lu Zhu pocketed the permit and the map. The sun had just sunk behind the western palms, leaving the sky a thin, pale grey-blue. The evening breeze off the river carried wet-reed and distant cookfire smoke. If he left now, he’d reach the shrine just as full darkness set in. Meru’s note — ”a lamp inside” — meant someone was living there.

He grabbed two cold date cakes from the cookhouse stone, wrapped them in a palm leaf, and set off toward the palm grove.

The palm grove was denser than he’d imagined. Deeper, too.

The further he walked, the softer the soil became — old riverbed silt, years of forgotten floods compressed into a spongy layer that gave underfoot and released a low, wet reek of decayed reeds and mud. The palm trunks pressed inward, their crowns knitting together overhead into a canopy that sealed out the last of the dusk. Night birds cut between the fronds with startling wing-claps.

The humidity shifted. Out by the riverbank, the air was dry and scorching. Here, in the grove’s closed basin, it cooled into a moist, shaded stillness — decent for mud-brick curing, lethal for grain storage. Lu Zhu caught himself running a mental site assessment: soil too soft for heavy foundations; humidity too high, any granary would need elevated flooring with at least two extra finger-widths of gravel in the moisture barrier; but the palm timber was abundant — good for light-frame shed roofing.

He walked half an hour, and the grove opened.

A clearing — maybe two hundred paces across, ringed by palms. In its center stood a half-collapsed shrine of mud-brick and limestone. The outer plaster had sloughed off entirely, exposing the dry, yellowed brick core beneath. Above the entrance, a tilted limestone lintel bore a carved ram relief so weather-eaten that only one horn remained distinguishable. Below it, two warped palm-wood doors.

A thin seam of lamplight leaked between them.

Across the doors stretched a temple seal-strip, yellowed and curling at the edges. Red ochre hieroglyphs: By the authority of Amun, this shrine is sealed. Any who break this seal commit sacrilege. The ram’s-head stamp at the bottom matched the limestone permit in Lu Zhu’s hand.

But someone had torn a narrow slit along the seal’s right edge. Just wide enough to slip a hand through and draw the bolt.

Someone was living inside. And that someone clearly did not want the temple to know.

Lu Zhu held up the permit and cleared his throat.

”Is anyone there?”

The lamplight behind the door wavered. Soft footsteps — bare feet on packed mud — light and quick, a woman or a half-grown child.

”Who?” An old man’s voice, low and steady. Not afraid. Prepared.

”I’m called Imhotep. From the West Bank granary. Meru got me the unsealing permit.” Lu Zhu slipped the limestone piece into the gap. ”I mean no harm. I just want to look at the storeroom. They say there are old drawings — inside.”

Silence. The lamplight flickered twice. The stone was taken. Then the bolt scraped in its stone groove — a sound that had not been made for three years.

The door opened halfway.

The girl holding the lamp was thirteen or fourteen — small and reed-thin, her dark brown skin pulled tight over a fine-boned frame. Her black eyes were too large for her sharp, narrow face. Her hair was an untended tangle of black curls, tied back carelessly with twine. Barefoot, her ankles were bird-delicate. Her linen shift had been washed so many times it was nearly white, the edges frayed to threads.

”Come in.” She said it without welcome. But without hostility, either. Her eyes swept Lu Zhu head to toe — pausing on his fine linen priest’s robe — and her brow creased fractionally.

Lu Zhu slipped sideways through the door. The girl pushed it shut behind him and dropped the bolt in one practiced motion.

The interior was larger than expected. Darker, too. The only light came from the girl’s lamp and a few small oil dishes set into wall niches. Lu Zhu’s eyes adjusted slowly. The main hall was about fifteen paces square, walled with ancient grey-blue limestone. Faded murals still clung to the plaster in patches — the ram-headed figure of Amun, mostly peeled away, leaving bare stone beneath. The floor was mixed crushed-stone and lime-mortar tamp, hard underfoot. But the southeastern corner showed a pronounced depression. Cavity below. Probably structural.

A narrow stone stairway at the back led down. From its mouth rose the dry-earth scent of a subterranean room and a faint, sweet trace of aged ointment.

”He’s down there.” The girl pointed at the stairs and went first, lamp in hand.

The steps were tight — single file, rough-hewn limestone, cruder than the main hall’s masonry. An addition, not original. At the bottom, a cellar about ten paces square. Low ceiling, palm-log beams overhead under thick reed thatch. The room was lit by a single oil lamp on a low palm-wood desk.

An old man sat cross-legged on a worn reed mat.

He was about fifty-five, gaunt and hollow-cheeked, his back just beginning to curve. His skin had the pallor of someone who hadn’t seen direct sunlight in years, except for the sun-damage patches — old brown spots still clinging to his cheekbones and the bridge of his nose, ghosts of an outdoor life. His hair was grey-white and thinning, combed neatly behind his ears. His fingers were long and dry, his nails trimmed with an almost ceremonial fastidiousness — the hands of a former high-ranking priest, retaining their ritual discipline even in a cellar. Deep-set eye sockets framed a pair of grey-green eyes: quiet, sharp, like a bronze mirror long buried in sand, its surface dimmed but its reflection still cold.

Spread before him was a sheepskin diagram, its edges frayed. Cross-section of a building — structural proportions marked in charcoal. Old Kingdom drafting convention. Crude, but logically sound.

”You’re from the granary,” the old man said. His voice was low and deliberate, the tone of someone who’d learned to press strong feelings deep beneath his words. ”Meru’s attendant came two days ago. Said a young priest who understands construction wanted to see this shrine’s old drawings.”

”I’m called Imhotep.” Lu Zhu crouched across from him — the ceiling was too low for standing.

”I know who you are. The West Bank granary priest who cured a storehouse of mold in seven days with gravel and sand.” The old man’s eyes rested on Lu Zhu’s face. ”News travels in this palm grove faster than the Nile flood. The mason Kamon has been telling everyone that you think about foundations the way a baker thinks about dough.”

”The second storehouse finishes tomorrow. The third has already started.” Lu Zhu said. ”Your sources are accurate.”

”In this kind of place, people with slow sources don’t survive.” The old man dropped his gaze, his fingers brushing the sheepskin’s edge. ”I’m called Imset. Formerly of the Amun temple —” he paused precisely at the word ”formerly” ”— high priest. Three years ago, I was framed, stripped of my rank, expelled from the temple. I live in this cellar now. I survive by copying old drawings and medical recipes for people who still remember I exist.”

”This shrine was yours?”

”My last posting.” Imset’s eyes swept the cellar walls. No nostalgia. Just the scabbed ache of old damage. ”After the expulsion, Nekhem sealed the shrine. But he didn’t finish me off. He let me keep the cellar. Condition: I never appear at any temple ceremony again.”

”Why would he let you keep the cellar?”

Imset was quiet for a moment. Then he reached down and pulled aside a coarse linen cloth covering the floor beside his desk.

Beneath it: several ox-hide chests. Each tagged with a small hieroglyphic label. Third Dynasty Granary Cross-Section. Fifth Dynasty Temple Foundation Construction. Old Kingdom Quarry Drainage Diagrams.

”These are what I’ve spent thirty years collecting.” A thread of quiet pride surfaced in Imset’s voice. ”Old Kingdom construction drawings. When Nekhem sealed the shrine, he wanted to burn them. I argued they contained no religious content — they’re craftsmen’s records, nothing more. He had his men check. When they confirmed nothing violated doctrine, he agreed. On one condition: the drawings stay sealed in this cellar. Never shared.”

”Why? If they’re not religious, why lock them up?”

Imset looked at Lu Zhu. Something moved in those grey-green eyes.

”Because he understands their value. An architect — who gets hold of Old Kingdom construction techniques can outbid the temple’s own building crews on royal contracts. Nekhem doesn’t want knowledge suppressed. He wants knowledge monopolized. Every construction technique controlled by the Amun priesthood. The more contracts the temple controls, the more leverage it has over the royal house and the nobles. These drawings — if they ever left this cellar — would cut the temple’s technical foundation in half.”

Lu Zhu said nothing. He stared at the ox-hide chests. His throat had gone dry.

Everything he’d done since arriving here — the granary renovations, the gravel barriers, the cutoff trenches — came from his own former-life knowledge. But if what Imset was saying was true, the contents of those chests were something else entirely. Native Egyptian technical knowledge. Old Kingdom — a thousand years before this moment. Those builders had raised pyramids, underground tombs, flood embankments — without modern tools. How had they managed foundation settlement? How had they waterproofed stone joints? How had they spanned ten cubits without iron reinforcement?

These questions mattered to him beyond any practical construction application.

He’d been gnawing on a question: was there a way back? If so, where? He didn’t believe the answer was a magical device or a divine portal. If it lay anywhere, it lay within the act of building itself. Ancient blueprints. Site-selection logic. Construction traces left by builders who’d been dead a thousand years. Linked together, they might form the outline of something he couldn’t yet see.

”Can I look at these?” Lu Zhu asked.

Imset didn’t answer right away. He was studying Lu Zhu again — not the appraisal of a stranger anymore. A professional assessing whether another professional merited access to the archive.

”You told Kamon the gravel moisture barrier needs three finger-widths of crushed stone and two of coarse sand,” Imset said slowly. ”What ratio keeps the capillary break functional?”

”Three fingers basalt gravel, grain-size between the fingers. Two fingers coarse river sand — freshwater-washed three times to remove alkali.”

”Basalt or limestone gravel?”

”Basalt. Limestone dissolves slowly in moisture — over time it turns to powder, clogs the voids, traps water instead of blocking it.”

”Cutoff trench gradient?”

”Bottom drops half a finger every ten cubits. Too steep, it scours the channel. Too flat, water won’t flow.”

Imset listened. Then — very slowly, almost imperceptibly — he nodded. He rose, moving more fluidly than before, and walked to the ox-hide chests against the wall. He opened the leftmost one.

”Start with this. Everything I have on granary construction. Third Dynasty foundation. Fifth Dynasty quarry drainage. There’s one from the Eleventh — a flood-proof cellar design for a desert oasis. It took me eight years to trade for it, from the descendant of a Memphis stonemason.”

Lu Zhu crouched beside the chest and drew out the top sheet. The sheepskin — had hardened like dried leather, its edges a web of cracks, but the charcoal lines were still legible. Cross-section of a long building. Foundation in three layers: packed earth, crushed stone, palm-frond matting on top. Beside the moisture barrier, the draftsman had written three hieroglyphs in an archaic hand: Dry. Stable. Clean.

Three thousand years ago. Someone had written down the same conclusions.

Lu Zhu’s hand rested on the parchment for a long time. Long enough that Imset glanced at him.

”You can read it?”

”I can.” Lu Zhu’s voice was quiet but steady. ”The gravel barrier on this drawing — it’s identical to my granary renovation. Three fingers stone, two fingers sand. The only thing it doesn’t mention is washing the sand to remove alkali. If this granary was built near the Nile, thirty years later it would have—”

”Twenty-two years. Salt efflorescence broke through the floor. They re-laid it.” Imset said. ”He added a note later, in the margin — ’Do not use river sand directly.’”

Lu Zhu looked up. Their eyes met across the cellar — a disgraced priest who’d spent three decades gathering construction knowledge, and a man displaced across three millennia — crouched together in a lamp-lit underground room, debating the particle-size ratios of a gravel bed.

”You spend thirty years collecting these. Why?” Lu Zhu asked.

Imset was quiet. Then he turned, opened a drawer in his low desk, and drew out a roll of yellowed papyrus. He spread it on the table. Lu Zhu angled the lamp and read.

It was an internal temple investigation report. Stamped REJECTED in red ochre. The report detailed accusations against an Amun priest — embezzlement on a war-monument construction project. Inflated stone prices. Phantom labor costs. Total damages: roughly five hundred sacks of barley equivalent.

The accused was Nekhem’s nephew.

The investigator who’d filed the report was Imset.

The rejection stamp at the bottom bore the ram’s-head profile of Amun. Nekhem.

”Three years ago, I discovered the fraud on the war-monument project. Someone was overbilling stone shipments and pocketing the difference. That someone was Nekhem’s nephew.” Imset’s voice stayed low, but every word came out sharp-edged, precision-cut. ”I followed procedure. Filed the report. The next day, I was summoned to the High Priest’s chamber. The person waiting for me wasn’t the nephew. It was Nekhem. He dropped my report into the brazier and watched it burn. Then he handed me a letter of accusation — three witnesses, three years of falsified accounts. The letter said I’d been skimming temple offerings. Stealing from the sacred stores. Every entry in those accounts matched — dates, quantities, signatures. I had never touched the shrine’s accounts in my life. But someone had been preparing them for years. Waiting.”

”He prepared the frame-up in advance,” Lu Zhu said.

”Three years. From the first day I took charge of this shrine, he was building a fallback evidence-chain for a crime I hadn’t committed.” Imset’s mouth twisted. Not a smile. The involuntary spasm of a man who’d been biting down on the same rage for three years. ”He didn’t need me to make a mistake. He just needed to be ready for the day I’d threaten his family’s interests. I filed a report on his nephew. He burned the report and my career in the same flame.”

Lu Zhu looked at the rejected investigation and mentally assembled the logic: Imset framed → priesthood stripped → keeps collecting drawings → converts from knowledge-keeper into underground archive. Nekhem let him live not out of mercy. Out of calculation. A silenced man is harmless. Dead, his knowledge might scatter and be picked up by others. Better to keep him underfoot.

”Are you still trying to get revenge?” Lu Zhu asked.

Imset lifted his eyes.

”Yes. Every day.” He said it levelly. ”But revenge requires leverage. My leverage is those chests. Nekhem thinks I want vindication — he doesn’t realize I’ve given up on justice inside the temple. What I want is to put these drawings into every construction site outside temple control. Give civilian granaries, houses, canals access to techniques that match the temple’s own crews. He monopolizes knowledge. I’m going to use that knowledge to crack his foundation.”

Lu Zhu absorbed this. Then he did something. He pulled out Meru’s map — the rough charcoal sketch — and turned it over. On the blank side, he wrote three lines with his charcoal stick:

Shrine storeroom structural assessment and repair plan Cellar expansion — ventilation and archival moisture-proofing Medicinal flatbread development — revenue to offset renovation costs

He pushed the paper across to Imset.

”If the storeroom’s structure is still sound — I’ll help you repair it. In exchange, I get access to your drawings. Not all at once. Every time I come, I study one batch. We discuss. You’ve got thirty years of archaeological fieldwork. I’ve got twenty years of practical construction experience — don’t ask what ’modern’ means, you don’t need to understand it. You only need to know that we can combine two knowledge systems and build things no one’s built before.”

Imset stared at the three lines for a long time. The lamplight caught the hollows of his eye sockets.

”Why do you want the drawings?” he asked.

Lu Zhu thought about how to answer. He chose a version of the truth.

”Half for the present. Better granaries. Better canals. Better houses. So the people west of the Nile can survive.” He paused. ”The other half — I’m looking for an answer. Something connected to the act of building itself.”

”What kind of answer?”

”...I don’t know yet. But if there’s an answer anywhere, it’s buried inside the act of construction.”

Imset looked at him for another long moment. The cellar was so quiet Lu Zhu could hear the lamp wick crackle.

Then Imset rose, crossed to the far side of the cellar, and pried up a loose floor-tile. Beneath it: a secondary cavity. Deeper. Narrow. Just wide enough for one person to slide through sideways.

”The first item on your list — storeroom repair,” Imset said. ”The west wall needs stabilizing before the rains come. If it collapses, everything above this cellar comes down. Fix that, and I’ll show you what’s in the lower cache.”

The girl — Shafi — had been sitting silently in the corner since Lu Zhu arrived. Now she spoke for the first time since the doorway. ”There’s a mongoose nest in the west wall crack. Don’t hurt them when you move the bricks.”

Lu Zhu turned. She was holding a bundle of dried mint, dividing it carefully into a coarse clay jar. Her hands moved with quiet precision. Behind her, a low shelf held dozens of small jars, each charcoal-labeled: Chamomile. Fennel. Myrrh. Frankincense. Mugwort. Their arrangement was deliberate — light-sensitive herbs shaded, moisture-sensitive jars on the upper shelves, volatile oils in the darkest, coolest corner at the bottom.

”You’re sorting medicines?” Lu Zhu asked.

”Master taught me.” Shafi didn’t look up. ”We trade these with the nearby villages. They bring barley. I give them two packets of herbs — one for winter cough, one for stomach pain. Different formulas. Each month this brings in about half a sack of barley.”

Lu Zhu looked at Imset, who nodded. ”She’s a natural. Same herb, she can grade the quality by smell alone. I trained acolytes for years when I was high priest — never saw one like her.”

Lu Zhu looked back at Shafi’s hands moving through the dried mint, and he remembered something Nefer had said: ”I can’t feed my children melted metal.” This girl was using the only skill she had to keep herself and her teacher alive, in a world with no safety net.

The shrine storeroom repair went faster than Lu Zhu anticipated.

Not because the work was light. The west wall was worse than it looked from outside — the foundation had sunk nearly half a cubit, tilting the entire wall three degrees south. Kamon brought five masons to assess it, and his verdict was grim: the wall needed partial demolition and reconstruction. Leave it as it was, the first heavy storm of the rainy season would bring the whole thing down into the cellar.

But Kamon didn’t walk away from the job. He looked at the drawing chests in the cellar — he didn’t look inside them, just at the seven ox-hide chests and their labels — and then turned to Lu Zhu and said, in a tone of unprecedented restraint: ”This shrine. I’ll do it at cost.”

It was the first time he’d ever voluntarily dropped his price in front of Lu Zhu.

Nefer sent three women to help — not as charity. Her condition: Imset would give her entire crew free checkups for colds and back injuries once every half-month. Imset agreed, then turned to Lu Zhu and said quietly: ”That woman negotiates harder than you do.”

”She learned from Kamon.”

”Who’s Kamon?”

”The mason she’s been fighting with for two weeks and still hasn’t beaten.”

”I understand now.” Imset nodded, his solemn tone undercut entirely by the crinkles at his eyes.

On the third evening of the shrine repair, Lu Zhu tried making medicinal flatbread for the first time.

The recipe came from a Twelfth Dynasty medicinal food text Imset had unearthed — Egypt’s version of food-based therapy. Original formula: steep chamomile and fennel seed in hot water, mix the infusion into barley flour to form a paste. Treats wind-cold coughs. Lu Zhu made two adjustments. First, he halved the chamomile concentration — the original was so bitter that patients refused to swallow it, defeating the point. Second, he sprinkled crushed dried fig seeds onto the paste when it was half-baked, adding a faint sweetness that turned the medicine from something you drank into something you ate.

The first trial came out as a palm-sized, deep-brown flatbread, its surface speckled with tiny scorch marks where the fig seeds had caramelized. It smelled of chamomile’s clean floral note and toasted fig. Lu Zhu tore off a piece for Imset.

Imset chewed. Twice. Then went quiet.

”...Well?” Shafi craned her neck from the doorway.

Imset finished chewing. Swallowed. Then said something that gave Lu Zhu his first genuine moment of cultural whiplash in this era:

”It’s better than the temple doctor’s medicinal porridge. That porridge was so bitter I once chose to cough for three months instead.”

Shafi’s eyes lit. She ran down into the cellar, came back with her charcoal stick and a palm-paper scrap, and wrote — crooked but legible — the first independently recorded recipe of her life: Chamomile Flatbread — Lord Imhotep’s formula. Half-spoon chamomile. One spoon fig seed. Not bitter.

Lu Zhu watched her crouched over the paper, writing with her whole body, and was hit by a sudden memory: his intern, first year, bent over a notebook exactly like that. Crooked handwriting, missed no detail.

He pulled his eyes away. Tore the second flatbread in half. Held one piece out to Shafi.

”Try it.”

”Is this medicine?” She took a careful bite. ”It chews a little like the sheep-fat flatbread from your granary. Not as fragrant. But better than the porridge.”

”Medicine you can swallow is medicine. Medicine you can’t swallow is — what your master called it — three months of coughing you’d rather endure.”

Shafi rolled her eyes at him and stuffed the rest of the bread into her mouth.

That night, Lu Zhu made a full batch of chamomile flatbreads and sent Imset to trade them in the nearest village. Result: ten flatbreads exchanged for three sacks of cracked barley, plus a promise from one old man’s rheumatic son to come clear the shrine’s back courtyard weeds the next day.

Imset came back, sat down at his low desk, and stared at the three sacks and one verbal labor commitment — for a very long time. He was probably realizing, for the first time, that the knowledge he’d spent thirty years collecting could be turned, in a way he’d never imagined, into food and hands and someone willing to show up.

”You told me you were looking for an answer,” Imset said. ”Connected to building.”

Lu Zhu nodded.

”If you ever find it — tell me.” Imset said. ”I stopped believing in the gods the day I was framed. But if someone is looking for an answer, I’m willing to help. Not for your sake — so that before I die, I’ll know what the answer was.”

Lu Zhu didn’t reply immediately. He looked at Imset’s face in the lamp-glow — older than it should have been, worn thin by three years in a cellar with only old drawings for company — and remembered a line he’d once read: The deepest alliances aren’t forged by shared interests. They’re forged by shared questions.

His question: where was the road back.

Imset’s question: where was truth, where was justice.

The two questions might lead in different directions. But right now, in this forgotten, sealed-off shrine cellar deep in a palm grove — they still needed each other.

On Lu Zhu’s third visit to the shrine, he brought news.

”Nekhem’s latest land acquisition. The parcel he’s been surveying — ten acres on the northern edge of the palm grove. Less than three li from this shrine.”

Imset’s hand stopped halfway through sorting sheepskin sheets. ”How much?”

”Ten acres. The three-hundred-year clause. Three-tenths of market price.” Lu Zhu repeated the intelligence Meru had gathered. ”They’ve already broken ground on a feeder canal. Planning one crop of barley. Sixty percent tenant rent.”

Imset laid the drawing down very slowly. The expression that surfaced in his grey-green eyes was one Lu Zhu hadn’t seen before. Not anger. Something older and far colder. Irony.

”Ten acres.” He repeated the number. ”Do you know what charge he used to expel me?”

Lu Zhu shook his head.

”Embezzling temple offerings. Five sacks of barley.” Imset’s voice stayed level, like he was reciting someone else’s file. ”His nephew’s fraud on the war monument — five hundred sacks. He pulled out the five-sack fake accounts and destroyed twenty-six years of my priesthood. Now he’s using a legal clause to pick up ten acres — a clause that was meant to protect neglected shrine auxiliary land, not to be applied for commercial acquisition. He’s reinterpreted it as ’temple territory expansion.’ And no one can challenge him. The High Priest interprets temple law. He’s the player and the referee.”

”Is there anyone who could challenge it?”

”There was. Me. But I’m a convicted embezzler. My challenge would be self-incrimination. A dismissed priest accusing the High Priest of legal manipulation — it would add a defamation charge to my file and give him grounds to expel me from the cellar.”

Lu Zhu was quiet. Outside, night birds were settling in the palm fronds. Shafi was closing up her medicine jars, the soft clink of clay lids carrying through the cellar doorway.

”Give me time,” Lu Zhu said. ”I need to rebuild your credibility — and your testimony — together. These drawings are the first brick. The medicinal flatbread is the second. When your practical contributions are numerous enough, the holes in his old fabricated accounts will expose themselves. Because procurement records written by someone who’s never done construction look different from records written by someone who has.”

”How do you know he’s never done construction?”

”Because he sealed this shrine.” Lu Zhu pointed at the ceiling. ”He let you stay in the cellar but didn’t destroy the drawings — because he doesn’t understand their real value. A man who truly understood construction wouldn’t have made that choice. Burn them. Or keep them for himself. He did neither — because he can’t read them.”

Imset stared at him. Then he did something Lu Zhu hadn’t anticipated. He smiled. Very slightly.

Not a happy smile. The smile of a man who’d been wrongfully accused for three years and had just met the first person who could see the absurdity of the whole thing.

”You’re right,” Imset said. ”He can’t read them.”

He rose, walked to the corner of the cellar, and pried up the loose floor-tile. The cavity beneath was deeper than the first. A crawl-space, barely wide enough for one body to slip through sideways. Imset retrieved something wrapped in layers of linen, brought it to the desk, and undid the binding.

A sheepskin drawing. Older than anything in the main chests. The edges were severely decayed, the lines bleached to near-invisibility, but the skin itself was finer than the others — the draftsman had used the best available material. Whatever this was, he’d considered it worth protecting.

Lu Zhu leaned into the lamp’s tiny flame and studied it.

It wasn’t entirely a building drawing.

It depicted a structure — a small stone temple or memorial building — but the critical information wasn’t the architecture. It was the web of star-sight lines overlaid on the floor plan. Southeast-northwest axis: a ray marking sunrise on the winter solstice. Northeast-southwest axis: a ray tracking the rising of Sirius. The building’s orientation, its internal partitioning, even the placement of its doorways — all calibrated to precise astronomical events.

In the lower right corner, a line of archaic hieroglyphs, penned in an elegant hand quite unlike the workmanlike script on the construction drawings.

Imset read it aloud. ”’All who build: observe the stars to fix the foundation. When the stars move, the foundation moves. When the stars are fixed, the dwelling is secure.’”

”What does it mean?” Lu Zhu asked. He already had a guess. He didn’t trust it yet.

”It’s a transmission verse from the Third Dynasty. The old builder-priests believed every structure — from temple to dwelling — had to be aligned with the sky. The sky doesn’t change, so a building aligned with the sky won’t collapse.” Imset’s voice had dropped, as if the cellar might overhear. ”Eventually the Amun priesthood monopolized this. Turned it into ritual. Any new construction, you had to bring a priest to observe the stars. The priest said ’build here,’ and you built. But before it became priest-business — before it was a monopoly — star-sighting was just a technical tool. Use the sky to mark time, orient foundations, predict the Nile flood, pick dry ground for granaries.”

Lu Zhu’s heartbeat had gone faster.

Stars. Buildings. Time.

He didn’t believe he’d been thrown into this era by a random lightning strike. Whatever force had sent him here — it had something to do with construction. If star-alignments and buildings shared a quantifiable relationship — if the ancient Egyptians used the sky to mark their structures, and the structures preserved the sky of their building-moment — then in theory, any building precisely oriented to a specific astronomical event was simultaneously an astronomical record.

And if he knew the stellar configuration of the time he needed to return to — he might need to find a building erected at that exact moment.

”Is the building on this drawing still standing?” Lu Zhu asked.

Imset shook his head.

”Collapsed long ago. Third Dynasty to now is over a thousand years. The Nile’s shifted course three times. The original site is probably under the riverbed.” He turned the sheepskin over and pointed at a tiny annotation on the back. ”But. The builder-priest who drew this listed every structure he’d ever worked on. Twelve buildings. Across Egypt, Nubia, and the western oasis. Three of them are marked with the notation ’star-fixed foundation.’”

Lu Zhu took the drawing and ran his finger over the ancient annotation.

Twelve buildings. Three with star-fixed foundations. Nine more sites unknown. This was a trail of breadcrumbs he could follow across a map.

”Help me make a copy of this.”

”To do what?”

”To compare against every old-building ruin I’ve seen. The state granary. This shrine. Any abandoned temple site. If any building’s foundation orientation matches the stellar alignments on this drawing, I’ll mark it.”

Imset looked at him for a beat, then slowly rolled the sheepskin and wrapped it again in its linen.

”Next time you come,” he said, ”bring a blank sheet of palm-paper. I’ll teach you the star-sight symbols marked on this drawing. You’ll learn as much as you can. These are tedious — temple apprentices take three years to learn them.”

”In three years I’ll have renovated every granary west of the Nile.” Lu Zhu stood, working a cramp out of his knee. ”Give me a month.”

Imset looked up at this young priest — this man in a white robe crouched in his cellar, knees going stiff — and thought of all the seekers of knowledge he’d encountered. Scholars seeking erudition. Priests seeking power. Merchants seeking profit. This one didn’t fit any category. He wasn’t after knowledge. He was after an answer.

”One month, then,” Imset said.

When Lu Zhu stepped out of the shrine, the moon had risen above the palm canopy.

Shafi was crouched by the outdoor hearth, packing dried herbs by moonlight. She saw him and held out a small palm-leaf parcel.

”Chamomile. Steep it in hot water.” Her voice was still clipped, but her hand moved slower than it had the first night. A fractional softness. ”You’ve been listening to Kamon yell at people for days. Your voice was hoarse last time. Don’t think I didn’t notice. This works better than your flatbread. Not sweet. But it works.”

Lu Zhu took the parcel. The scent of dried chamomile bloomed through the palm leaf.

”Thank you.”

”Don’t thank me.” Shafi stood, wedged her herb-basket into the sheltered spot behind the door, and said over her shoulder: ”Thank my master. He told me to give it to you. Said you’re useful to this shrine.”

She disappeared down the cellar stairway, the oil lamp shrinking to a pinprick of amber behind her.
