Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 16: Chapter 6: Doors Slammed Shut --- Kamon Drafts the Guild Rules

On the third day after the stoneworkers’ council, Kamon began making the rounds of the West Bank’s most respected old masons, going door to door.

He chose the hour after the evening shift deliberately --- during the day, everyone was at the quarry working, no time to sit and talk. Only after supper, after washing off the day’s stone dust, could a man sit down for a real conversation. As he stepped out of his hut, two young apprentices chasing each other for half a flatbread slammed into him, showering him with gravel dust. He laughed, patted one on the back of the head, and didn’t make anything of it. Every day when the shift ended, he cleaned his hands at the quarry’s water basin first --- the stone grit packed under his fingernails took a rough sandstone scraper and considerable effort to work loose, and the calluses on his palms, hard as rock, stayed rough no matter how many times he washed. Then he went back to his hut in the settlement and changed into the coarse-linen tunic he saved for important occasions.

He’d worn this tunic for nearly ten years. It had been mended four times: the patch on the left shoulder was from when a falling piece of stone had torn it at the Karnak temple colonnade --- his wife had repaired it with leftover linen cloth; the patch on the cuff was where his son had burned a hole in it playing with fire as a child --- Kamon had twisted the flax thread and stitched it himself; the patches on the chest and hem were both worn through from daily labor. This tunic wasn’t as presentable as the bleached linen the viscount’s estate had issued him. But wearing it, he felt more grounded than in anything else.

He tucked half a pouch of tobacco into his belt and made his way slowly along the row of dwellings below the quarry slope. He knew most of the West Bank’s old masons --- some were old comrades who’d spent half a lifetime chiseling cliff faces alongside him, others were the master-generation who’d trained him when he was young. He figured: they’d built temple walls together, drunk cold water from the same worksite well, pulled each other clear of the same quarry collapse. Even if they wouldn’t agree, at least they’d sit down and let him finish what he had to say.

He’d even rehearsed his pitch on the walk over --- not mentioning the guild, not talking about opposing the temple. Just saying: let’s pool together, set a unified wage, stop letting the foremen undercut us, stop letting the authorities conscript us for unpaid labor whenever they pleased. And when Tiya and Asaf came down in a few days to audit the corvée work-hour records, the unified ledgers could align directly with the new administration’s requirements—no more scrambling to piece together scattered records from every household.

What he hadn’t expected was that reality would be far colder than anything he’d imagined.

The first household he visited belonged to a specialty limestone cutter named Pepi, who’d spent half his life chiseling divine statues and reliefs on cliff faces --- his craft was among the finest on the West Bank. When Kamon arrived, Pepi had just finished supper and was sitting outside his door sharpening his chisel. He heard footsteps, looked up, saw it was Kamon, and his whetstone paused mid-stroke.

”Kamon? Rare visitor.” Pepi’s tone was neither warm nor cold. He didn’t rise. Didn’t invite him in.

Kamon stood at the door and laid out his purpose --- the craftsmen’s guild, unified wages, resisting corvée. He’d barely gotten halfway through when Pepi waved a hand and cut him off.

”Save it.” Pepi stood, one hand gripping the half-open door panel. His face showed nothing. ”You want a guild, you go form a guild. The temple fed three generations of my family. My grandfather carved divine statues. My father carved divine statues. I’ve carved them half my life. I don’t believe some new-capital labor gang can feed me for the rest of it. Don’t drag my whole household into trouble and cost us what’s left of the temple contracts.”

Before the words had fully landed, the door panel pushed shut with a scrape. It left a crack, but no room to argue through.

Kamon stood outside the door, stunned for a moment. He’d known Pepi over twenty years. They’d spent three years together at the Theban temple worksite, slept in the same work-shed, eaten from the same pot of barley porridge. He’d thought at the very least they could sit and exchange a few words. He hadn’t expected to be left standing outside the door.

He didn’t knock again. Didn’t get angry. Just said ”Sorry to disturb” toward the shut door, turned, and walked toward the next house.

The second household belonged to a man named Amenhotep --- an old mason who’d worked alongside Kamon on the temple’s hypostyle hall. Three years older than Kamon, steady hands, gentle nature. When he saw Kamon coming, he hurried to welcome him into the courtyard and poured him a cup of barley tea.

After hearing Kamon out on the guild, Amenhotep sighed. The clay cup in his hands trembled slightly. ”Kamon, it’s not that I won’t help. You know my eldest son is still a junior foreman in the temple’s construction crew. If I join your guild, the temple will dismiss him first thing. My whole family lives on his wages. I can’t take that gamble.”

He paused, lowered his voice: ”Watch yourself, too. The temple’s already put the word out --- anyone who follows the reform crowd and stirs up trouble gets cut off. Right now you’re leading refugees in construction, the temple can’t touch you. But those of us who still eat from the temple’s hand --- we can’t move.”

Kamon nodded. He didn’t press further. He understood the man was speaking the truth --- with a family to feed, no one dared gamble their entire household’s livelihood.

He didn’t stay long before rising to take his leave. Amenhotep saw him to the door, hesitated as if wanting to say more, then finally only managed: ”Take care of yourself.”

The third household was a stone-carving craftsman who ran a small workshop specializing in noblemen’s tombstones and decorative stonework. Temple orders made up half his business. The owner heard Kamon out, then laughed and deflected: ”A guild --- that’s a good thing, a good thing. Once you’ve got it up and running, I’ll definitely join. Right now though, I’ve still got temple work unfinished. Can’t step away.”

The words were polite. The meaning was clear: not getting involved now. Once you’ve proven yourselves, we’ll talk.

Kamon didn’t call him out either. He just smiled and left.

Six old-mason households, one after another. Every one had a reason to say no. Some feared losing their livelihood. Some feared dragging their families into trouble. Some were fence-sitters, waiting to see which way the wind blew. Not one was willing to be the first to step forward.

The sixth old mason was an ancient quarryman named Taha, who’d spent his whole working life on the quarry slopes, the skin of his hands now nearly indistinguishable from the surface of weathered limestone. Years ago, when the quarry had collapsed, it was Taha who’d hauled Kamon --- trapped in the loose stone --- out by main force. Kamon had always regarded him as half a master, the kind you brought barley beer to on feast days.

When Kamon found him, Taha was crouched on the stone slab outside his hut, poking at the gravel chips piled beside his feet with the bowl of his pipe. The tobacco burned slow. The smoke wrapped around the sunset, tangling in the deep lines of his face. He heard Kamon’s whole pitch through, tapped his pipe against the stone slab three times, then finally looked up. His eyes held something between frustration and disappointment.

”Kamon. You’ve been a refugee-chief for barely two months, and now you want to be guild-master. You think a guild is a soup tent? You call, and people just show up?”

His voice was rough as stone rubbing stone. ”How many years has the temple held the craftsman trade in its grip? A hundred! They can cut off your livelihood with a single word. You think just because you’ve rounded up a handful of men, you can stand against the temple? Stop dreaming. I’ll give you honest advice: quit while it’s still small. Leading refugees to work for the reform camp --- no one can touch you for that. But don’t drag everyone else down with you.”

Kamon didn’t argue. He just kept his head lowered, looking at the gravel by his feet. He knew Taha was speaking from the heart. Ten years ago, he would have thought this was all a fantasy too. But he’d seen the refugees come together to sieve gravel and lay bricks. He’d seen what happened when people pulled as one --- how a scrap slope could be turned into a settlement. He knew: scattered, every man feared the temple. But bound together --- there might be a way through.

He didn’t say any of this. There was no point. People who hadn’t seen it with their own eyes wouldn’t believe it.

He sat a while longer, then rose to leave. Taha watched his back and called out one last thing: ”Don’t be so stubborn! Stone is hard --- but fate is harder!”

Kamon’s steps faltered for half a beat. He didn’t turn around. He raised a hand in acknowledgment and kept walking.

Kamon returned to the settlement that night and sat on the discarded limestone slab in the back courtyard of the granary, staring into the darkness for a very long time. He didn’t argue with anyone --- he was perfectly capable of shouting matches --- but what he’d seen on those old men’s faces was the same fear he’d once seen on his own face, every day, when he was terrified that his eldest son would be conscripted to the border garrison. He understood now: fear wasn’t something a chisel could knock loose. Pepi wasn’t heartless. Taha wasn’t stubborn. They were just afraid.

Lu Zhu found him past midnight, coming out to add a moisture-content annotation to tomorrow’s sieving standards. Kamon described all six rejections, his voice slow but every word precise --- he was past the age of street-cursing. Lu Zhu listened, then said: ”You’ve been going door to door asking people to join, person by person. What you haven’t done is build a set of rules that no one can argue against. Their problem right now is --- no matter who’s the leader, no matter what banner you fly --- they’re afraid. Afraid of retaliation. Afraid of losing their livelihood. Afraid the authorities will change their minds overnight. If you want them to start trusting something that has no temple silhouette behind it --- you have to write the rules so clean that the rules themselves carry the authority. Doesn’t matter who’s standing behind them. The rules stand alone. And when Tiya and Asaf come down in a few days to audit the corvée records, this rule-set and ledger will align directly with the new administration’s standards. It’s not a private club—it’s a craftsman standard that can be put on the table.”

Kamon said nothing. He dragged a discarded piece of broken limestone scrap to his knee, pulled the charcoal from his tool pouch, and wrote three lines:

Unified wage rates --- regardless of seniority, regardless of temple or civilian affiliation. Refusal of unpaid corvée --- no man may be forcibly conscripted; no one labors on another man’s land without another man’s pay. Craft standards and apprentice manual --- basic stone-cutting and wall-laying operational procedures; every master must teach apprentices the fundamental methods of the trade.

He studied his own crooked handwriting when he finished. Then he wiped it clean with his sleeve and rewrote it --- three times, each iteration spacing the characters wider, strokes steadier. Finally he propped the scrap slab against the base of the courtyard wall, pointed at the three lines, and said to Lu Zhu: ”Before, when I tried to get people to join a guild, I was asking favors. From tomorrow, I’m not asking. I’m putting these three lines at the entrance of the quarry work-shed. Whoever’s willing to work by these rules --- they come sign their own name.”

Lu Zhu looked at the slab and said: ”Add two more items. One --- a craftsman hourly-work ledger. Every man writes down his trade, his years of experience, his daily wage. With a baseline, wage negotiations have a foundation. Two --- an apprentice training model. Any young apprentice who wants to enter the guild must have a designated master responsible for their training. Can’t just leave them to fend for themselves.”

Kamon added the two new lines below the original three, charcoal on grey stone, in the same spot. He tucked the charcoal back into his tool pouch and stared at that segment of discarded stone for a moment. He didn’t say ”I’ve decided when to formally found the guild.” He just crouched there in the faint glow of the oil lamp in the small hours of the morning, grinding line after line --- wage rates, hourly-work standards, craft specifications, apprenticeship rules --- into the grey stone surface with the same charcoal pressure that half a lifetime of chiseling stone had trained into his hand: perfectly even, stroke by stroke.

Before dawn, Seb and Hapy arrived to help. They drew the standard work-hour ledger template on a limestone tablet, following Lu Zhu’s format: name, trade, years of experience, daily wage, conscription days per month, free-work days, wages due. The two boys worked carefully, stroke by stroke; Hapy added a small chisel emblem in the corner, which Seb laughed at and erased. Beside the slab, they set up a waist-high demonstration platform, laying out three basic tools: the standard chisel, a leveling rod, and a measuring mallet. Each tool was labeled with its purpose and basic handling instructions. Even an apprentice who hadn’t yet been formally taken on by a master could walk up, look at the platform, and begin to understand the craft.

At noon the next day, Kamon carried the grey stone slab --- now bearing five rules --- to the entrance of the West Bank quarry work-shed. He leaned it against the long plank table where the workers ate their meals. No ceremony. No public announcement. He simply piled a fresh batch of basalt gravel beside it and began sieving sand alongside his apprentices. Seb and Hapy crouched by the slab and read it together --- Seb recognized every character, but two technical terms were beyond him. He asked Kamon to explain his own annotation; Kamon did, then told Hapy to repeat the explanation of the hourly-work record-keeping rule to the young masons coming off the afternoon shift.

Several young masons came down from the slope after work and stood in front of the slab with their barley-porridge bowls, reading for a long time. Then some of them went into the work-shed to rummage through their leather pouches --- they had, in previous jobs, used small stones or charcoal scraps to track their own working hours. They brought these fragmentary records to the slab, comparing them against the daily wage standard written on the stone, calculating among themselves how much they’d been shorted.

”At this rate, you could buy yourself a new chisel next month,” one of them laughed, nudging the young mason named Papi. ”No more grinding that chipped blade.” Papi grinned but kept his eyes on the calculations.

Apprentices passing by were pulled over by their companions, a finger pointing at the fifth clause --- ”fixed apprentice training standards” --- and they stopped walking.

That evening, three young masons and one apprentice found Kamon at the work-shed counter behind the slab. They hadn’t been waiting for him. They’d heard about the grey slab after coming back from the quarry and had come on their own, still holding their porridge bowls. One of them said: ”We want to work by these five rules. Register our trades and hours first --- whether the guild succeeds or not, we think this standard shouldn’t be lost.”

Kamon took down their four names, trades, apprenticeship completion years, and craft specialties on a sheet of palm-paper beside the slab. The paper he’d traded from the paper-maker that morning, the charcoal now sharpened finer than before. After he’d written the last name, he looked up and said one thing to the four of them: ”If anyone outside asks why you registered --- don’t say it’s to join a guild. Say you’re keeping your own hourly-work records, for your own protection. Any contractor who wants to check, you have your own proof.”

It was not the kind of statement a leader standing before a crowd would make. He was teaching these four men how to protect themselves inside a quarry where the old power structure was still breathing.

That same afternoon, Lu Zhu stood at one end of the drying yard, watching the young masons and apprentices gradually cluster around the distant slab. He noticed, at the far end of the drying yard, several old masons leaning against the wall in quiet conversation. They were the same men who’d left the council shed in silence days ago, making no public commitment of any kind. They still wore the grey-white dust of the quarry on their old short tunics, leaning against the drying-yard edge. But every one of them was glancing, at intervals, toward the grey slab at the work-shed entrance.

Pepi’s young apprentice had slipped over earlier, copied the ledger format onto a scrap of palm-paper, tucked it into his tunic, and hurried back. His master must have given him permission—or at least not stopped him. Lu Zhu told himself not to approach the old men, and not to send anything special their way. Let them walk past the work-shed on their own, let them see the new signatures that had appeared on the slab.

In that moment, something clicked into place. Kamon’s instruction to the four registrants --- ”don’t say it’s because of the guild” --- wasn’t a retreat. It was a safe, neutral ground for everyone who hadn’t yet made up their mind, and especially for the older generation who needed to save face. A space that required no public declaration. But one where, at any moment, a man could walk in, borrow a charcoal stick, and write his own name. For these grey men who’d only just loosened their grip on a visible dependency on the old system, this was more real than any slogan.

After the shift ended that evening, two more names appeared beside the grey slab --- not young masons who’d come that afternoon, but two men who’d walked over slowly from the drying yard at dusk, like they’d been hesitating for a long time.

The one in front was the old quarryman Taha.

He was still wearing the same dust-grey tunic from the daytime, his back even more stooped than at noon. He stopped in front of the slab and stared at the five rules for a very long time. He didn’t speak.

His fingertips brushed the line that read ”Refusal of unpaid corvée” — the old calluses on his finger pads scraping lightly against the stone surface with a soft, dry sound. He lingered there for a moment, as though testing the weight of the words with his skin.

Hapy opened his mouth to say something. Kamon stopped him with a look.

Taha stared for what felt like forever. Then he slowly reached out and picked up a charcoal stick from the rack beside the slab. His hands trembled badly --- the hands that in his youth had swung a sledgehammer steady as stone, now swollen with rheumatism in old age, barely able to grip a writing stick.

Beside him, Seb moved to help. He’d barely taken a step before Taha waved him off --- no need. Gripping the charcoal in both hands, stroke by stroke, he wrote his name on the registration palm-paper. The characters came out crooked and uneven, but every stroke rose from the paper’s surface like a stone hammer long abandoned, still striking stone.

When he’d finished writing, he set the charcoal back. He didn’t look at anyone. He turned and walked away. Halfway across the yard, his back still to Kamon, he said in that rough voice: ”Don’t let everyone down.”

Kamon watched his receding silhouette and answered, voice heavy: ”I won’t.”

Taha had barely left when another figure approached. It was the old mason who, back in the council shed, had traded his temple ceremonial chisel for the civilian standard chisel, then stared at his own swollen knuckles for what seemed like a very long time. His name was Sobek.

He hadn’t laid his chisel on the tool rack today. He was holding it in his hand. Walking up to the slab, he looked down at the old chisel in his grip --- the one his father had passed down to him, a temple-issue ceremonial chisel he’d used for over forty years.

He set the chisel down gently beside the charcoal rack, like setting down a weight he’d carried for half a lifetime. Then he picked up the charcoal and wrote his name, neat and steady.

When he finished, he lifted his head. He and Kamon, seated on the gravel pile across the way, looked at each other over a dozen paces of distance. Neither made a sound. But everyone present understood what those two seconds held. It wasn’t an embrace. It was one of the oldest quarrymen on the West Bank, laying nearly half a working lifetime onto a sheet of palm-paper.

Sobek nodded once. Turned and walked away. The setting sun stretched his shadow long across the quarry slope, like a silent standing stone.

The men were gone. The quarry had gone completely still. Kamon walked to the slab, picked up the charcoal, and beside the fifth clause wrote two more characters in an unusually fine, precise hand: ”Train the young.”

It was not a formal Egyptian word. It was the quarry worker’s everyday phrase for ”take them along and teach them by doing” --- the kind of thing you only said when an old man, day after day, used his own body to show a young mason how to hold a standard chisel.

He remembered his own apprenticeship, following his master, who was a man of few words --- just took him into the quarry and worked, hand to hand, teaching him how to read the grain of the stone, where to set the chisel, how to save his strength. His master had never spoken grand truths. Just one line: ”The craft has to be passed down. Can’t let it rot in your own hands.”

Now he wanted to set that rule in stone. The old generation’s craft had to be taught to the young. Only when the young had a future could the trade itself have a future.

He set the charcoal down and looked at the names on the slab. Young ones, old ones. Six names in all. Not many. But like six seeds, fallen into the soil of the quarry.

In the distance, the settlement campfires blinked on again, same as last night. But Kamon knew --- some things were already different.

That same hour, on the Theban road out of the West Bank, the low-ranking priest whom Kamon had blocked outside the settlement hadn’t returned to the city. He’d turned into a small wineshop beside a quarry fork-road, and in the back room he’d found two old stonemasons---the same two who’d been pacing the edge of the drying yard all afternoon, never quite approaching the grey slab. The priest laid two small pouches of copper on the table and spoke very gently: ”Lord Nekhem says---you don’t have to sign anything. Just keep not signing. Every month, each of you gets the same amount. Think about it. How long can a guild’s rules last? The temple’s copper lasts a lifetime.”

The two old masons didn’t take the pouches. They didn’t answer. But one of them stared at the copper on the table---copper catching the oil lamp’s light, more copper than he’d ever seen in one place for all his years of chiseling stone. His throat moved. He did not get up to leave.

Outside the wineshop, someone coughed once in the night wind—like a reminder, or a nudge. At the far end of the Theban road, a fast horse carried news of the West Bank masons’ division toward the city. The new rules and the old pull, pulling against each other across the same West Bank quarry slope. No one knew which way the next man to pick up a charcoal stick would turn.
