Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 2: Chapter 2: The Granary Rises — Branching Threads and Burnt Fish

Seven days later, the first renovated storehouse passed its moisture test.

Lu Zhu crouched at the doorway, running his fingers along the new mud-brick foundation. Three finger-widths of crushed basalt gravel, tamped. Two finger-widths of coarse river sand on top — washed three times in fresh water before laying, now bone-dry and silky to the touch.

”That’s it?” Asaf stood behind him, neck craned forward, the same tone he’d use to ask whether a fish was cooked through.

”Not yet.” Lu Zhu straightened, brushing sand from his knees. ”Wait for full sun tomorrow. Seal the door all day. Evening — come back, feel the floor. If the earth doesn’t sweat, we’re good. If it does, the gravel needs a larger grade.”

”Gravel has grades?” Asaf looked like a man being introduced to a concept that existed in a dimension he couldn’t access.

”It does.” Kamon leaned over the edge of the roof, sweat-streaked, clutching a makeshift broom of bundled palm fronds. ”He spent a whole morning at the quarry, squatting in the gravel piles, driving the foreman insane. The stones have to be exactly big enough to trap between your fingers. Too big, too many air gaps. Too small, they clog the drainage. You think we just dumped random rocks?”

Asaf went quiet. He looked at Lu Zhu. Then at Kamon. Then chose not to pursue the question.

This particular silence had become a recurring feature of the past seven days. Every time Lu Zhu proposed something new — washing river sand, grading gravel by particle size, cutting angled cutoff trenches — Asaf’s initial skepticism would collide with Kamon’s field verification and collapse into a grudging, silent concession. He wasn’t stupid. He’d just never seen anyone treat a storehouse like this. In his world, a granary was a building where you stacked grain. It leaked, you patched it. It molded, you threw the grain out. The notion that construction could be approached with the precision of a kitchen recipe was outside his entire framework for ”granary management.”

But he no longer cared. Because the first renovated storehouse floor was genuinely dry. Which meant, at minimum, his annual performance review had found a single, precious handhold on the cliff face of his career.

”How long for the other six?” Asaf asked.

”Kamon’s crew is running two shifts.” Lu Zhu pointed at the next storehouse, where shirtless masons were hauling gravel inside, sweat gleaming on their backs. ”No incidents, another twenty days.”

”Twenty days.” Asaf chewed the words like an underripe date. ”Fine. I’m submitting the first phase’s progress report today.”

He turned to leave, got three paces, and stopped. He looked back at Lu Zhu like he wanted to say something. What came out was: ”The grain. Meru’s moved about forty percent through the bulk sale. The rest stays sealed until the storehouses are fully renovated.”

”Where is Meru?”

”The market district. Came looking for you yesterday — you were out in the villages surveying granaries.”

”What does he want?”

”Says he has a spice warehouse he wants you to look at.” Asaf paused, and a tiny, almost imperceptible note of schadenfreude crept into his voice. ”You should ask him yourself. When that man starts talking business, the sentences run longer than the Nile in flood.”

---

Lu Zhu found Meru on a dirt road at the edge of the market district.

The road was familiar — it was the same river avenue he’d walked on his second day after crossing, the one lined with fish stalls and date shops. But he was further west now, a good two hundred paces from the riverbank. The houses were thinning out, replaced by rows of squat mud-brick warehouses and open lots heaped with construction materials. The air carried dry limestone dust and the green-hay scent of sun-dried palm fronds.

Meru stood in front of a long, narrow storehouse, one hand on his hip, the other pointing at the roof, talking rapid Nubian at his two attendants. When he spotted Lu Zhu, he switched to Egyptian and put on his merchant smile — polished and quick.

”Perfect timing.” Meru grabbed Lu Zhu’s sleeve and steered him toward the warehouse door. ”Smell this.”

Lu Zhu stepped inside. A wave of sweet-spicy scent hit him so hard his eyes watered. The storehouse was stacked with dozens of small, sealed reed jars — the same type Meru used for grain, but smaller, each holding maybe ten liters.

”Cinnamon. Myrrh. Frankincense.” Meru’s voice was pained. ”All high-value. All from Punt. And all — ruined.”

Lu Zhu crouched beside a jar and cracked the seal. He inhaled. His brow furrowed.

The jar should have held pure cinnamon. What he smelled instead was cinnamon plus a sharp, sour undertone, layered with a damp-must funk. The scents had bled together like voices in a badly tuned chorus.

”Cross-contamination.” Lu Zhu closed the jar. ”Cinnamon and myrrh in the same enclosed space. Temperature rises — the cinnamon’s volatile oils migrate into the myrrh. The myrrh’s resin notes bleed back into the cinnamon. And there’s something else — did someone spill beer in here?”

”Last month, a porter got drunk and knocked over a half-jar. I didn’t tell you.” Meru’s face was dark.

”That made it worse. Alcohol vapor accelerates scent migration.” Lu Zhu stood, surveying the narrow space. ”You need to partition. Different spices can’t share the same air volume. Cinnamon and myrrh need at least twenty cubits of separation, with a solid rammed-earth dividing wall between them. Roof needs two high vents — keep air circulating, but not strong draft. Spices want stable, cool conditions. Too much ventilation is as bad as none.”

Meru snapped his fingers at one of his attendants, who immediately pulled a wooden tally-board and charcoal stick from his belt.

”How thick for the partition wall?” Meru asked.

”Half a cubit. Sandwich a layer of reed matting inside the rammed earth — reed absorbs odor but won’t pass moisture. Blocks most scent transfer.” Lu Zhu thought for a moment and added, ”One more thing. The beeswax seals on your jars are too thin. Double the wax thickness, then overwrap with coarse linen tied with palm-fiber cord.”

”Beeswax plus linen overwrap—” Meru turned and rattled the instruction at his attendant in Nubian, then swung back to Lu Zhu, the gleam in his eye brightening. ”Could this be applied to barley storage?”

”No. Grain needs to breathe. Spices need to be sealed. Opposite problems.”

”Then the grain-storage improvements — the methods you developed for the state granary — can I sell those as—”

”You’re asking whether you can sell granary renovation as a consulting service.” Lu Zhu stared at him.

Meru smiled. The smile of a man who’d been caught and wasn’t remotely embarrassed. ”I pay you a consultancy fee. Ten percent of every warehouse renovation contract.”

Lu Zhu was quiet for a moment.

He wasn’t hesitating about the deal. He was recalibrating his assessment of Meru. Seven days ago, this man had stood in the granary compound arguing about freight costs for twenty thousand hekats of rotting barley. Now his brain had already pivoted from bulk grain trading to construction-technology brokering. That kind of commercial instinct — in Lu Zhu’s previous life, that was the guy who went from subcontractor to building-supply platform CEO in five years.

”Ten percent is too low. Twenty. Plus you let me redesign every spice warehouse you currently own, free of charge — that’s the demo unit. Going forward, all warehouse renovation contracts you take on: I do the design, Kamon’s masons do the construction. You handle client acquisition, contracts, payments.”

”Kamon’s crew has to do the work?”

”Has to. No one else in this district knows how to lay a gravel moisture barrier. You hire other builders, the design won’t execute. Your reputation tanks.”

Meru thought for maybe four seconds.

Then he held out his hand. ”Deal.”

Lu Zhu shook it. Meru’s grip was dry and firm, his skin temperature a half-degree cooler than Lu Zhu’s own — maybe a Nubian thing, maybe just the hands of a man who handled cargo manifests rather than construction materials.

”One condition.” Meru dropped his voice. ”The spice-partition design — don’t share it with other merchants. At least three months. Give me time to lock down every spice dealer’s warehouse west of the Nile—”

”Three months,” Lu Zhu said. ”Plenty of time.”

---

The spice-warehouse renovation was far smaller than the granary — the partition wall took three days, and Kamon sent two masons for an afternoon to cut the roof vents. But the ripple effects were larger than Lu Zhu anticipated.

On the third evening, Meru arrived at the granary compound with three local spice merchants. All small operators — one dealt myrrh, one did cinnamon retail, one shipped Punt frankincense up to Memphis. Meru walked them through the renovated warehouse. They stood in front of the rammed-earth partition wall and the high vents. There was a long silence.

Then the myrrh dealer turned to Meru and asked — not about the price. ”Who designed this?”

Meru pointed toward Lu Zhu, who was crouched beside the granary, sieving bran from freshly ground barley flour. The three merchants swiveled in unison. Their expressions were the look of men confronted with a white-robed priest holding a mason’s chisel — too disorienting to know where to start asking questions.

Lu Zhu didn’t look up. He’d grown accustomed to this particular stare.

That night, Meru sat across from Lu Zhu beside the granary campfire and tallied the numbers. Conclusion: the three merchants’ warehouse-renovation orders, design fees alone, would cover Meru’s entire loss from the emergency grain sell-off.

”What loss?” Kamon walked past with a palm-log beam across his shoulder, fresh from the quarry. ”You spent weeks telling everyone you were bleeding money. Now you’ve got three warehouse contracts before the partition wall’s even dry, and the copper you turned that twenty thousand hekats into could buy three donkeys.”

”Donkeys are appreciating faster than grain — do you even know what a good donkey costs right now?” Meru shot back.

”I don’t care about donkeys.” Kamon dropped the beam with a thud, straightening. His callused, stone-grit-embedded hands smacked against his hips. ”What I care about: the quarry sand you promised me. When does it arrive? Do I have enough gravel for the next storehouse? The third one starts tomorrow, and you’re here pricing donkeys.”

”Sand arrives the day after tomorrow. Gravel arrives tomorrow.” Meru fixed Kamon with a look that said push me again and I raise your price. ”But there’s bad news. The quarry gravel foreman says that last time you personally spent a whole morning picking through his gravel and insulted three workers. They hide when they see you coming. Next time, place your own order. Don’t send that apprentice of yours. He talks even worse than you do.”

Kamon snorted, entirely unbothered. ”Their gravel grades weren’t up to spec. My apprentice was right to call them out. I’d have said worse.”

Lu Zhu sat by the fire, twisting a dried reed leaf in his fingers. These two could now bicker naturally in front of him. Seven days ago, that was impossible. Seven days ago, Kamon was kicking baskets and demanding unpaid wages. Meru was calculating how to cut his losses. Now they debated sand delivery schedules and gravel grades and how many more warehouse contracts they could land.

Construction had an unwritten rule: once materials started moving and job sites started humming, people’s attention shifted from past losses to future deadlines.

This was a good thing. It also meant Lu Zhu was about to get a lot busier.

---

Nefer arrived on the second day of the third storehouse renovation.

More precisely, a group of women arrived first. Lu Zhu walked onto the worksite that morning to find the open ground outside the granary suddenly occupied by seven or eight of them. Mostly in their thirties, early forties, wearing undyed linen shifts stained with mud, hair tied back with twine. Every one of them carried a wooden mud-brick mold — a rectangular frame you packed with a mix of earth and chopped straw, compacted, and tipped out to dry into a standard construction brick.

The woman who stepped forward to speak for them was about thirty-five, solidly built, wide-shouldered and big-handed, her skin baked to a deep brown by the sun. Her curly black hair was pulled back carelessly. Her face held none of the diffidence Lu Zhu had come to expect from Egyptian village women.

This was Nefer. Her dark eyes were direct and unblinking, the skin at their corners just beginning to crease. Her mouth was thin-lipped, the corners pulled slightly downward — the permanent set of someone who was always mentally calculating and had already arrived at a firm price. Her hands were caked in dried mud, nails packed with grey clay dust, the wooden mold in her grip worn glossy from years of use.

”We’re from the West Bank Oasis.” Her voice was low but every syllable landed. ”The men are either dead on the battlefield or conscripted north. A group of us widows got tired of sitting around waiting to starve. We heard this granary renovation needs mud bricks.”

Lu Zhu looked at the worn-shiny mold in her hand, then at the women arrayed behind her. They didn’t look cowed. Standing behind this one, they looked almost righteous.

”How many bricks have you made?” Lu Zhu asked.

”I’ve been making them ten years.” Nefer set her mold down. ”I built my own house. I built my in-laws’ granary. When the Libyans burned the village’s outer wall, I rebuilt it. You want to see my work?”

She didn’t wait for an answer. She crouched, scooped up a handful of the worksite earth, rubbed it between her palms, then brought it to her nose.

”This soil’s no good. Too much river silt. Good adhesion but too much shrinkage — it’ll crack as it dries. You need to cut it with three parts dry upland loess, two parts chopped straw.” She scanned the site. ”That straw pile over there — is that enough?”

She looked at Lu Zhu. Her dark eyes fixed him. Not asking. Auditing inventory.

Lu Zhu stared at this woman crouched in the dirt at his feet, and a jolt of recognition went through him.

His first job site, his first life. The client had dragged him to meet a subcontractor — a Sichuan woman who ran a crew of twenty laborers. She’d talked exactly like this. No wasted words. No deference. Opened with soil composition and straw ratios.

”We have enough straw.” Lu Zhu crouched to her level. ”The granary renovation is seven storehouses. Each needs a moisture-barrier floor and partition-wall footings. Total brick requirement — roughly three thousand units. How many can you make?”

”Three thousand bricks, ten women, full-time — fifteen days.” Nefer scanned the compound. ”Conditions: I need the drying yard. That empty patch—” she pointed at a weed-choked lot on the east side of the compound ”—that’s mine. Also, once the bricks are cured, you haul them yourselves. We don’t do transport. And payment — in grain, not copper. I can’t feed my children melted metal.”

”Grain payment. Agreed.” Lu Zhu nodded. ”The rest of the details you work out with Kamon. He’s the masonry foreman. He sets all material specs.”

Nefer straightened, clapped the dirt off her hands, and looked toward where Kamon was crouched by a storehouse wall, trimming a brick edge with his stone chisel. The man hadn’t even noticed the invasion of women.

”That the one with the beard?” Nefer asked.

”That’s him.”

Nefer didn’t walk over immediately. She went back to her women first. Low words were exchanged. The women nodded and broke apart — checking tools, checking water sources, checking the soil pile. No one asked ”why.” The efficiency of their movements reminded Lu Zhu of an assembly-line foreman from his previous life — not loud, not aggressive. Just everyone knowing exactly what they needed to do.

Then Nefer turned and walked toward Kamon, stopping three paces away.

”You’re Kamon?”

Kamon looked up, grey-white brows bunching together. The look translated precisely as: I am busy. Do not interrupt me with trivialities.

”Who’s asking?”

”Nefer. The mud-brick work. The priest in the white robe told me to talk to you.”

Kamon glanced at her, then at Lu Zhu — still crouched in the distance, sieving barley bran — and rose. He brushed stone dust from his knees. They faced each other: one barrel-chested, coarse-tunicked mason; one solid, coarse-shifted woman. Three paces apart. Mutual appraisal humming in the air.

”Three thousand bricks.” Kamon said. ”You know the standard dimensions?”

”One cubit long. Half a cubit wide. Half a cubit high.” Nefer said. ”Cured weight no more than half a sack of barley per brick. Overweight means too much soil, not enough straw. Any brick with cracks wider than two finger-widths is rejected.”

Kamon’s eyebrows moved. Those were real specs — the precision of someone who’d worked job sites, not a housewife who’d once made a few bricks in her yard.

”Your husband was in a masonry crew?”

”He was. I checked his material lists for three years. Delivered his bricks for five.” Nefer’s tone was flat, but every word landed precisely. ”I won’t short you a single brick. Don’t short me a single flatbread.”

Kamon was quiet. Then he extended his hand — the one caked in stone dust and calluses.

”Fine.”

Nefer took it. Both of them squeezed exactly hard enough — not to hurt, but each held on half a beat too long. An unspoken price negotiation conducted through grip strength.

”One more thing.” Kamon released her hand. ”The worksite doesn’t have a spare cookhouse for your crew. You feed yourselves. Ingredients on you. Stone and firewood, I’ll lend.”

”Done.” Nefer turned to go, then spun back and added, ”The sheep fat. You still have some left? I heard from the old laborer — your priest cooks flatbread with sheep fat. My women want that flatbread too. No sheep fat, don’t be surprised if the bricks come out slow.”

Kamon’s face twitched.

”That flatbread isn’t an everyday thing.”

”Then the days you have it? Those are the days the bricks come out fast.”

”That’s not a wage negotiation. That’s robbery.”

”Learned from you.” Nefer said it in exactly the same tone Kamon had used on Meru, seven days ago.

Lu Zhu, still sifting bran in the distance, heard every word. His shoulders gave one very small shake. Then he got them under control.

Nefer delivered.

Her ten-woman crew began producing bricks the next morning — mixing mud and chopped straw in the early hours, pressing the wooden molds in the afternoon, laying out neat rows across the drying yard like a sprawling amber chessboard. Kamon moved between the storehouses and the drying yard all day, ostensibly inspecting brick quality, but in practice, finding a new thing to argue with Nefer about every afternoon.

Today’s argument was drying orientation.

”Those aren’t angled right. They’re off by half a cubit from the sun path. Afternoon glare from the west will heat-crack them unevenly. You need to rotate the left row fifteen degrees south.”

”Rotate your head.” Nefer didn’t look up from the reed-bristle brush she was using to clean a freshly molded brick’s edge. ”I sighted the sun with a pole this morning before you were even awake. I’ve been on this drying yard since dawn. You want me to spin the bricks — you tell me where the sun’s going to be tomorrow, I’ll spin them to match.”

The two brick-hauling women nearby had stopped working to watch. Free entertainment.

Kamon had no answer. He stood there, jaw working, then growled: ”If this batch cracks, I won’t accept them.”

”The cracked ones I’ll keep. Build a cookhouse for my crew. The good ones are yours.” Nefer finally straightened, wiped her forehead with her sleeve, and squinted at him through the hot air shimmering off the drying yard. ”You don’t believe me? Let’s bet. Today’s bricks — by tomorrow sundown. One crack in any of them, the sheep fat for your crew’s lunch goes to my women. Zero cracks, I throw in two hundred extra bricks, no charge.”

The two brick-hauling women were now grinning ear to ear.

Kamon stared at the rows of yellow-brown rectangles baking in the sun. Then at Nefer. Then he made the wisest decision he’d made all week.

”...Carry on.”

He walked away. Nefer snorted and dropped back into her crouch to clean the next brick edge. The corner of her mouth curved a very, very small amount — small enough that only someone standing quite close would have noticed.

The date cakes and dried meat appeared on the third day.

Nefer found Lu Zhu while he was running a water-flow test on the newly cut cutoff trench. She carried two baskets, and three paces out, the combined scent of sweet dates and salted beef hit him.

”Grain storage always produces broken heads and edge grain — can’t go into the bins, but throwing it out is a waste.” She set the baskets down. ”I sieved out the broken grains and milled them. Mixed in crushed dates and a little honey. I modified your sheep-fat flatbread recipe — swapped the fat for date paste in the dough. Lower cost. No expensive materials. Taste is close enough.”

Lu Zhu bit into one. The texture was firmer than his sheep-fat version — no fat to smooth the crumb — but the date paste’s moisture compensated for the low-gluten barley. Moderate sweetness, the characteristic rough bite of barley, little pops of crushed date flesh near the end.

”Not bad,” he said. ”What are you planning to do with these?”

”Keep enough for my crew. Sell the rest at the market.” Nefer crouched and opened the second basket — rolls of dried beef, each tied with a thin palm-fiber cord, cut evenly, uniform thickness. ”This is edge trim too. Standard dried beef uses whole loin cuts — expensive. I take the off-cuts, soak them in salt brine overnight, then air-dry. The pieces aren’t pretty. But the flavor’s the same, and it stores two months. Price it thirty percent under market — poor families who need shelf-stable protein will buy.”

Lu Zhu tore off a strip and chewed. Salty. Hard. But the concentrated umami of slow air-drying bloomed as it softened — the kind of flavor that only time could pull out of meat.

”You’re planning to set up a market stall?” he asked.

”I’m not.” Nefer straightened and gestured behind her. Two of her middle-aged brick-women approached, carrying identical baskets. ”They are. I need you to talk to Meru for me. The best stall spots in the market district — his merchant-guild people have them locked. Ask him to carve us a corner.”

”Why would he?”

”Because reducing grain storage waste helps his bottom line. The barley he’s sitting on has attrition — grain gets broken, spoils, gets eaten by rats. The broken grain either rots, or I turn it into processed goods. If I don’t process it, it’s waste. If I process it but can’t sell it, it’s still waste. Meru wants minimized storage losses. I want sellable product. We both win. He gives up a corner of a stall — it costs him nothing.”

Lu Zhu looked at this woman and understood something.

She wasn’t asking. She was informing him. This was her entire plan — from the moment she’d stepped into the granary compound to take the brick contract, she’d been working toward this. The bricks gave her a foothold. The date cakes and dried meat gave her surplus product. The market stall would give her distribution. She’d used seven days to convert herself, step by step, from a refugee into a small-scale merchant.

”Talk to Meru yourself,” Lu Zhu said. ”He’ll negotiate. You can hold your own.”

Nefer met his eyes, gave the smallest nod, and picked up the empty baskets.

That evening, two of her women were sitting at a corner of the market square — one selling date cakes, one selling dried beef. No signage, no hawking. Just two women in rough linen shifts, sitting quietly on palm-frond mats with baskets of cut food in front of them. The date cakes sold out in half an hour. The dried beef — shelf-stable, cheap — was cleaned out by three donkey porters, each buying three rolls for the road.

Kamon and Nefer’s biggest fight happened on the evening of the fourth day.

The subject was a cartload of river sand.

The sand had been diverted from a Nubian caravan by Meru — originally ordered by Kamon two days ahead, intended for the third storehouse’s moisture barrier. But by the time it reached the granary gate, Nefer’s brick crew had intercepted it. Their brick-mix earth was running short on coarse sand — the fine sand they used for smooth-facing couldn’t substitute structurally. Bricks would crack.

”Give me thirty percent of this load.” Nefer stood in front of the donkey cart.

”Not happening.” Kamon emerged from the storehouse, stone chisel still in hand. ”I ordered this sand four days ago. You need sand, put in your own order through Meru. My schedule is locked.”

”Your schedule is locked?” Nefer’s voice jumped half an octave. ”I don’t care about your schedule! You’re not providing my crew with coarse sand — bricks aren’t coming out — and when you have no bricks, what exactly are you building your storehouse walls with? Your stubbornness?!”

The last half was in dialect, and Lu Zhu only caught the words ”donkey” and ”stone.” From Kamon’s coloring, the other words were about the quality of his thinking.

Eventually Lu Zhu had to extract himself from the cutoff-trench test and separate the two parties. He did a fast mental audit of their remaining materials and project timelines, then delivered a solution that made neither side happy but both sides functional:

”River sand goes to Nefer first, but only twenty percent. The other eighty goes to Kamon — lay the gravel layer in storehouse three tonight, push the sand layer to tomorrow afternoon. Nefer, tomorrow morning you cut brick production by thirty percent. Use the saved time to send two women down to the river shallows and sieve your own sand.”

Neither spoke. Neither left.

”Any other questions?”

”No,” Kamon said.

”No,” Nefer said.

Two identical ”no”s, equally cold. Like stones just pulled from the river. But they each turned and went back to their work. And that was the part that mattered. They’d fought. They hadn’t stopped working.

Lu Zhu stood in the middle of the compound, the storehouse walls and the drying-yard bricks rising in opposite directions, and thought of the old saying from job sites in his previous life: the foreman and the materials supplier scream at each other every morning. But if they’re both still standing on the same dirt at the end of the day, and each still needs what the other is holding — the work continues.

The fish-pickling incident happened on the morning of the fifth day.

Lu Zhu woke with a vague sense that today would present a problem. Not a premonition — more that Kamon’s two youngest apprentices had been quiet for four consecutive days. Quiet, on a construction site, was never a good sign. Boys being quiet meant they were doing something they weren’t supposed to.

He reached the improvised cookhouse at the back of the compound and walked directly into a wall of odor.

The smell occupied a mid-point between rotting fish gills and spoiled milk, with an overtone of fermented onion and an undernote of something he didn’t want to identify. It was dense enough to scoop.

The two apprentices stood beside a clay vat in the corner. The taller, skinnier one was holding half a piece of flatbread, chewing contentedly. The shorter one was fanning furiously with a palm frond — directing the smell, as it happened, straight toward the doorway where Lu Zhu was standing.

”Who told you to pickle fish?” Lu Zhu pinched his nose and approached.

”You did!” The skinny apprentice swallowed his bread and pointed at the vat with righteous certainty. ”When you were making flatbread the other day, you said — just in passing — ’Nile tilapia would be good pickled, give us another protein source for winter.’ I remembered.”

Lu Zhu’s mind went blank for a moment. He had said that. A throwaway remark while flipping flatbread — not an assignment. Not even a suggestion. Just thinking out loud.

”How did you do it?”

”Washed the fish. Salted them. Put them in the vat. Added onion slices to cut the fishiness. Sealed the lid.” The shorter apprentice added, his tone proud in the way of someone who’d followed a recipe with great precision.

”How much salt?”

”Two handfuls.”

”Two handfuls — show me.”

The boy held up his hands, cupped. The quantity was roughly one and a half flatbreads’ worth. For a vat containing two whole tilapia — that amount of salt might suffice to introduce itself to the fish, but fell far short of the concentration required for osmotic dehydration.

”Open the lid,” Lu Zhu said.

The vat was opened. The odor escalated from ”scoopable” to ”chiselable.” The skinny apprentice nearly dropped his flatbread.

Inside, the two tilapia had turned grey-green. A film of pale, sticky froth floated on the surface. The onion slices, half-dissolved, were smeared across the fish scales in a manner that brought to mind a dead fish left on a riverbank for three days.

”This is your pickled fish?” Lu Zhu said.

”It doesn’t seem quite right,” the skinny apprentice admitted. He had finally stopped chewing.

”Doesn’t seem quite right.” Lu Zhu’s voice had taken on the particular cadence he’d used with interns in his previous life. ”The fish has rotted. Not enough salt. Didn’t drain the water. The vat isn’t sealed. You committed all three errors simultaneously. You didn’t pickle fish — you cultured bacteria.”

The short apprentice asked, carefully, ”What are bacteria?”

Before Lu Zhu could answer, three faces had crammed into the cookhouse doorway — two of Nefer’s brick-women plus the old granary laborer, all drawn by the smell. One of the women glanced at the vat’s contents and silently turned her face away. The old laborer, however, leaned in for a closer look and pronounced judgment with the clinical finality of an archaeologist:

”My lord. This vat needs to be thrown away.”

”We can’t throw it away!” The skinny apprentice was genuinely panicked. ”I borrowed it from Lord Asaf. If I throw it away, I’ll have to pay for it.”

”Then wash it,” the old laborer said.

The skinny apprentice was silent. All eyes converged on him. In the vat, the two fish made their own argument through the medium of odor.

”...I’ll pay for the vat,” the apprentice said.

Lu Zhu looked at the boy’s face — Pure Regret, Wide-Eyed, a detailed self-indictment — and then at the vat of biohazard-level fish, and finally lost the battle with his own composure. He laughed.

”Take the vat to the riverbank. Dump it far away — far enough the smell doesn’t drift back.” He got his teaching voice back. ”Then go to the market. Buy six fresh tilapia. Tonight, I’m teaching you how to properly pickle fish. Salt ratio. Draining the fish before salting. Sealing the vat. All the steps. No shortcuts.”

The two apprentices exchanged a look, then simultaneously bent to lift the vat, shuffling toward the Nile at a half-jog, carrying it between them like a hazardous material requiring rapid off-site disposal.

As they passed the drying yard, one of Nefer’s women pinched her nose and sidestepped three paces. She turned to Nefer with the pitying tone of someone who’d witnessed an epic calamity. ”Those two boys blew up the kitchen again.”

Nefer didn’t look up from her brick. ”What kind of explosion?”

”Fish pickling. They produced corpse stench.”

”Oh.” Nefer kept cleaning her brick edge. ”That’s not an explosion. When that priest nearly burned through the cooking stone with sheep fat — that was an explosion. Fish stink is just... odor.”

Lu Zhu stood in the cookhouse doorway, absorbing this assessment from a distance, and was silent for quite a while.

Then he turned, walked to the spice warehouse’s new partition wall, and stood in front of the half-cubit-thick rammed-earth divider, taking a long breath — exchanging the residual pickled-fish molecules in his lungs for the dry, clean scent of earth.

The day was still young.

Nekhem appeared again in the West Bank district that afternoon.

This time he didn’t ride past the granary compound. He was further west, at the edge of a stretch of fallow fields, visible through a gap in the palm grove. Lu Zhu was walking with Meru to inspect a potential new warehouse site when he spotted him — the chestnut horse, the white robe, two attendants with shaved heads and reed pens.

They were standing at the edge of the field. One was sketching rapidly on a wooden board. A boundary map.

”What are they doing?” Lu Zhu asked.

Meru looked at the three figures and his expression shifted. Not fear — the instinctive alarm of one merchant recognizing another about to close a deal.

”Buying land,” he said, voice dropping. ”Nekhem doesn’t come to West Bank at this season for temple visits. He comes for one thing: land acquisition. His legal advisor found a clause in a three-hundred-year-old statute. It allows the temple to purchase uncultivated land at ’priority rate’ — a price set during the year of the pharaoh’s coronation, when the Nile hit a record low and grain prices collapsed. The clause was intended for religious auxiliary land. Nekhem applies it to everything. Three-tenths of market price. Entirely legal.”

”Three-tenths?”

”Written in law,” Meru said. A bitter edge crept into his voice. ”A three-hundred-year-old clause. Never revised. He buys up dozens of plots every year. No one can stop him — because it’s legal.”

Lu Zhu watched the three distant figures at the field’s edge. Nekhem was doing something more thorough than any act of violence. No swords. No lawsuits. No threats. He was using the law itself to dismantle what the law was meant to protect.

That, Lu Zhu realized, was a far more dangerous kind of adversary.

”How big is that field?”

”About ten acres. Access to a Nile tributary. Soil’s mediocre, but if you cut a feeder canal, it’ll grow a crop of barley even in the dry season.”

”What does he do with the land after the purchase?”

”Sometimes he leases it to tenant farmers — sixty percent of the harvest. Sometimes he just sits on it, waits for the value to rise, sells it later.” Meru paused. ”But there’s a theory. He’s not just accumulating land for profit. He’s building the temple’s territorial base. The Amun temple currently controls roughly twenty percent of arable land west of the Nile. The more land the temple owns, the more farmers depend on it. The more farmers depend on the temple, the more leverage it has in every political decision in the district.”

Lu Zhu was silent. He stared at the three quiet figures surveying the field’s edge. In his previous life, this had a name: asset control. Nekhem wasn’t farming. He was accumulating leverage. Concentrating the means of production. Making everyone who needed access to land dependent on him.

A man with enough leverage never needs to raise his voice to win.

”Come on,” Lu Zhu said. ”Show me the warehouse.”

On the walk back to the granary, Meru brought up something else.

”You know there’s an abandoned Amun shrine in the palm grove?”

Lu Zhu’s steps slowed. He wasn’t a native, but Imhotep’s residual memories stirred with a vague image — deep in the groves west of the river, a small, derelict temple that had been sealed years ago. Something about a disgraced priest.

”Heard of it. Why?”

”The shrine’s storeroom. Supposedly it holds a cache of Old Kingdom construction drawings.” Meru’s tone was light — casual gossip, nothing more. ”A porter who hauls grain from a village near the shrine told me. Says there are ox-hide chests inside, full of sheepskin diagrams. Temple blueprints, granary plans. Centuries old. But no one’s seen them. The shrine is sealed. The temple seal-strip bears Nekhem’s personal stamp.”

”Why would he seal it?”

”No idea.” Meru shook his head, then — in that particular merchant register — added: ”But if you’re interested, I could get you an official unsealing permit. Nekhem’s land-registry scribe owes me a favor. Cost you one sack of quality Punt cinnamon.”

Lu Zhu was quiet for a moment.

Old Kingdom construction drawings. Centuries-old granary blueprints. If the rumors were true — these were worth more to him than money. Not for immediate practical use. For something else. His search for a way back — he didn’t know what the door looked like, or where it was, but his instincts pointed toward the act of building itself. Every ancient structure. Every old blueprint. Every fragment of construction knowledge. They were pieces of a puzzle he hadn’t yet seen the shape of.

”One sack of cinnamon.” Lu Zhu said. ”Get the seal lifted. I just need the storeroom door open.”

Meru nodded. He didn’t ask for more.

The two men walked on through the palm-grove path, their shadows stretched long by the low afternoon sun. In the distance, the granary’s mud-brick walls shimmered faintly in the heat, like something slowly hardening into permanence.
