Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 35: Chapter 11: Overlooking the Wilderness --- The Entire Company Envisions the New Capital

The morning after the foundation survey had mapped the hidden hazards, Lu Zhu climbed alone to the low limestone platform on the eastern side of the wilderness.

He had woken roughly one watch before dawn. It was not any sound from the camp that roused him -- the nights on this wilderness were eerily still, a stillness that was not the absence of sound but the concentration of every sound into wind from a single direction -- he had felt, suspended between half-sleep and waking, that the wind across his cheek had shed one layer of heat, the chillest predawn northern gust curling around the cliff face and sweeping low across the entire camp, stirring from the fire’s deepest bed a minute scattering of cinders still smoldering in dull red-and-gray sparks. He opened his eyes and saw the shelter’s coarse-linen roof cloth, bellied by the wind into a slow, undulating arc, like a sail breathing at an even rhythm, and through the weave-gaps of the cloth, starlight seeped in -- the points of light impossibly tiny, impossibly dense, impossibly regular, as if someone had spread a glowing net across the roof.

He rose without a sound. He lit no torch -- torchlight, in the hour before dawn, would drag the human eye from the darkness back to the ground, and he needed pupils not yet recalibrated by artificial light to see the wilderness at this hour. He slid his feet into straw sandals so cold they bit slightly at the soles; the palm-fiber knots of the sandals, tightened by the chill of undried night dew, made a taut sound of dry fibers grinding against each other as they were tied at the outer ankle. In the shelter beside him, Seb was still asleep -- turned on his side, facing south, one hand resting on the half-finished calcium-nodule comparison chart, his fingers in sleep still held in the arc of gripping charcoal. Mery was curled on his linen mat, breathing evenly, his knees pressed against his tool case -- inside the case was the silt longitudinal-gradient map he would continue tracing today; the iron clasp on the case lid reflected a tiny point of cold white metal in the starlight. Everyone else still slept. The campfire was completely dead. Far off, on the south side of the camp, the night-watch artisan in the material yard saw a human figure emerge soundlessly from the shelter area and head outward, and he raised his right hand ready to challenge -- but once he recognized the line of the man’s shoulders, he lowered it. That was Lu Zhu. Across the entire journey so far, every time this silhouette had stirred before dawn, it had never needed to announce itself to anyone -- he himself was the time-signal line, marking the hour when the day’s first set of data awoke. The night watchman watched him walk alone along the sandy slope, several dozen paces toward the eastern cliff, his form gradually shrinking into the darkness, overlapping ever more closely with the line of that sandy slope connecting camp to platform under the starlight.

The path up to the limestone platform was not a formal path -- no one had built it. The trampling of the previous several days had only produced an extremely faint and scattered chain of footprints: during yesterday’s foundation survey, Seb, Kes, and Mery had each walked a stretch, their strides all different, and so this footprint chain held, every few paces, a gap belonging to no one -- proof that not enough people had yet walked here to wear a unified path-width. Lu Zhu climbed along this scattered footprint chain, each step registering the sound of limestone detritus sliding under the soles of his sandals -- that detritus was the surface weathered zone that wind and rain had peeled from the platform’s summit, scattered down the rising slope, extremely thin but extremely densely distributed. One or two slightly larger chips of stone, stepped upon, flipped sideways, and in the moment of flipping, the edge of the detritus refracted a trace of the faint pre-dawn starlight -- the fracture face of limestone was very white, and even in the dark there was a layer of cold-hued reflection that seemed to exist and yet not.

Halfway up, he stopped. Not from fatigue -- but because in a hollow eaten out by wind and rain partway up the cliff, he had inadvertently glimpsed the contrast in the full face of the wilderness seen from different heights. Last night, when they had made camp, everyone had looked at this land from the wilderness ground plane -- the wilderness at ground level had been pressed by night into a dark plane without boundaries; beyond the camp’s fire, there was no second light source. But now, standing roughly ten cubits up the cliff face and looking down, his perspective had already been lifted to a height where he could simultaneously see the embers of the camp’s fire, the reflected starlight on the surface of the Nile to the west, and the northern and southern flank platforms each spreading out beneath the night sky in their differing shades of dark gray contour. The camp’s embers were a tiny orange-leaning red patch of faint radiance on the ground; the Nile under starlight was a longitudinal band of dark-silver flowing mirror traversing the entire field of vision slightly to the west, the mirror-surface without ripples -- too far to see them -- only a continuous cold-white reflective band in its entirety. The northern and southern platforms under starlight were a shade paler than the sky -- from certain angles even half a shade brighter than the sky -- that was the salt efflorescence adhering to the surface hard crust reflecting the residual faint light back toward the heavens. Three light sources -- artificial, fluvial, geological -- all within the same field of view, each glowing independently; between them, no artificial axis-line had yet been drawn. At this moment, this plot of earth was a set of separate, unconnected, each-silent domains of light. He moved his feet from the hollow and continued climbing.

This platform was the only natural high point in the entire wilderness from which one could overlook the full city site -- rising in a gentle grade from the cliff base, the limestone strata eroded by wind and rain into a terraced stair, each stone step’s surface incised with countless parallel fine grooves of wind abrasion. Lu Zhu stood on the highest step and turned southward to gaze out: the Nile, in the dawn mist, was like a ribbon of pewter-gray spread thin, winding from north to south along the western edge of the city site; the eastern cliff walled off this alluvial plain from the eastern desert that stretched an unbroken half-day’s march; and the northern and southern platforms lay open -- broad enough to simultaneously spread a palace, residential quarters, granary yards, and a central axis extending without end.

He stood atop the platform as sunrise was just beginning. The limestone edge at the summit of the eastern cliff caught light first -- not the entire face lighting up at once, but the slightly projecting rock-ridge cornices on the cliff face brushed first by the rays, tracing across the whole cliff, still sunk in deep gray shadow, a thread of gold-white contour so fine it could only just be caught in the instant of a blink. This golden thread crept southward along the cliff’s north end with an almost imperceptible slowness -- so slow it was nearly undetectable, but after watching long enough, one realized it was moving: the sequence in which each terrace-step’s edge was illuminated perfectly matched the original bedding direction of the limestone when it was deposited. The dawn sunlight was descending along the grain that the rock itself had formed hundreds of millions of years ago -- first the uppermost rock ridge at the cliff summit brightened, then the wind-eroded groove of the next layer below faintly began to glow a gray-yellow, then the vertical face of the third step was struck by the oblique light from the side, revealing countless fine chisel-marks invisible under the noon glare -- dissolution traces of carbonates scoured by rainwater. By the time the slant of daylight finally reached the cliff base, the entire cliff face, from summit to foot, presented an extraordinarily slow gradient of light and shadow -- from the white-gold of the summit transitioning through the warm-gray of the cliff’s waist to the cold blue-gray of the cliff foot, and finally sinking into the dark purple-gray shadow band of the wilderness surface, untouched yet by the sun.

The only sound in this entire process was the wind. The wind came from the north, sent the limestone detritus on the platform scuttering faintly backward, the collision frequency of the fragments matching almost exactly the rhythm of human breath -- two or three collisions in the span of drawing a single breath. The desiccated lichen that grew from the rock crevices on the platform was cracked by the wind into paper-thin flakes, which, after detaching, tumbled several full rotations in the air, so light they seemed weightless -- and in fact, their weight had nearly ceased to exist; their internal moisture had evaporated completely months ago, the residual plant matter nothing but a single layer of carbonized cell-wall shells.

Then the first direct ray of sunlight crested the summit line and fell upon the river. The river’s response was softer than the cliff’s -- not reflection, but absorption of a portion, then a diffuse scattering back outward in a circle of extraordinarily thin golden mist. The Nile at this hour was pale gray; yesterday’s dusk had tinted it the heavy, somber tone of pewter-gray -- now, struck by the slanting dawn light coming in from the other side, the river’s color had lifted, turning lighter, more translucent, as if one could scrape downward layer by layer with a fingertip, revealing different brightness levels, a thin-mist band of light. Extending from north to south along the river surface was a long, stable zone of water-vapor evaporation -- the water’s temperature and the air’s were separated by nearly a palm’s width of temperature difference, and the vapor rising from the river was lit from below by the newly risen sun, forming a band of golden mist suspended tight against the water’s surface, its height not exceeding two cubits, its length, however, extending across the entire visible stretch of the riverbank line. The color of that mist-band in the daylight was neither water nor cloud -- it was a semi-transparent gelatinous gold between the two: the outer edges of the moisture, as they diffused, shifted into an exceedingly pale silver-white, while the densest core transmitted a shallow golden luster, as if freshly poured from a heated copper pot of oil. It was moving -- drifting with unthinkable slowness along the river surface downstream, a vortex occasionally tearing open a small rift of sky-light filled with gold from the mist’s center -- but almost simultaneously, mist from farther off would flow in to mend it. Every section of the river’s mist was thus continued by the upstream and succeeded by the downstream, each alternating and each healing the other. Seen from the cliff summit, that morning mist traveling low against the water’s surface was like a natural rolling marker following the river, animating the entire stretch of river line from gray at the hour of sunrise -- the water’s surface no longer a silent pewter-gray thin ribbon but a breathing mountain-ridge of golden mist.

Lu Zhu stood alone atop the platform, watching this dawn peel the entire wilderness from the darkness, layer by layer outward. As he stood there, the thumb of his left hand was unconsciously pressing against the inner flap of his tunic -- the habitual gesture he repeated every time he stood before a critical elevation benchmark. His right hand hung at his side; between the fingers still clung charcoal powder left on the skin from drawing cross-sections the previous day -- fine black faintly silvered luster glinting faintly in the morning light. He did not move. His breathing was pressed very shallow -- so shallow that someone within ten paces might not have heard his breath.

What he saw was not only the wilderness at his feet -- he saw everything between the West Bank refugee settlement and this wilderness, all the terrain and the configurations of every station he had crossed. In this moment, what he saw was the joining of these two across the direction of time and space -- not a dream, not a fantasy, but something very concrete, a full-city longitudinal-latitudinal correspondence he had already drawn in his mind countless times. If the first retaining wall of the material yard at the West Bank settlement were taken as the starting point of this longitudinal axis -- this starting point, though at this moment far behind him to the west, could still, by the direction of the sun’s illumination, have its eastward linear-extension direction-angle precisely corresponded to the same daylight-plane extension line on this wilderness. Then from the West Bank granary to the White River Ford cofferdam, from the narrow window at Wheat Hill to the sandstone quarry-face at Red Rock Slope, from the Hawk’s Wing Ford riverbank screening yard all the way to this wilderness’s hard crust -- the entire gradient line of groundwater levels and gravel particle sizes, once pulled by this central axis, would automatically coalesce from scattered data points into a complete physical coordinate system. The first stake he needed to drive was not beneath any specific building’s load-bearing wall -- it was at the origin point of this coordinate system. Once that origin was set, the elevations of every building in the city, the flow direction of the drainage, the visual rising-start point of the axis -- all could be back-calculated and voiced from this origin.

He stood alone for a very long time. The wind blew from the north, sweeping the accumulated lime dust and dried-season curls of desiccated lichen from the crevices at his feet together into the air. Lu Zhu gazed out over this wilderness -- three months ago, when he had climbed a similar high point at the West Bank settlement, what he had seen were already-built enclosure walls, thatched huts, drying yards, and drainage channels; what he had thought then was how to move all of it onto a larger platform. Now he stood at the edge of an empty desert plain, no completed walls before his eyes -- but the decree in his hand granted him authority over this land, from the palace to the temple to the commoners’ dwellings, the power to allocate every district across the entire domain. He had already walked through enough towns, measured enough groundwater tables and wet-mud samples -- no one had conferred any additional authority upon him; his foundation data had spoken on his behalf.

From the West Bank refugee settlement to White River Ford, from Wheat Hill Town to Red Rock Slope, from Hawk’s Wing Ford to this wilderness -- each station had once been nothing more than a meal-and-rest point stretching the column’s length. But now, looking back from atop the platform, Lu Zhu saw no longer mere villages passed along the way; he saw a chain of private-well routes strung together at the desert’s edge into a water-supply line still slender but already connected, the gravel moisture barrier extending from old Mut’s grain-storage jar to the official granary drainage ditches, the standard of verifying material by hammer-tone on the riverbank stone beds transmitted from the West Bank quarry to Ptah’s sample contracts -- all of this was what he and this column had lent to every village and town along the way, and all of it was now linked together, waiting to be gathered up by this central axis running from the cliff straight through to the riverbank.

Behind him came the sound of footsteps -- not one person, but a crowd. Kamon was the first to scale the platform, then Meru, Mekat, Seb, Hapy, Kes, Mery, and the artisans and apprentices who followed. Without any prior arrangement, everyone walked to the summit of the platform, stood at the highest point of this wilderness, and looked out over this land where no city had ever been built.

Kamon was the first to climb up. His hands, through actions endlessly repeated -- raising shelters, unloading materials, setting posts -- had developed calluses distributed in directions entirely different from those of outland artisans: his calluses were not on the palms but at the web of the thumb and the inner faces of the four fingers’ first joints, the specific pressure angles left by gripping both ends of a palm-fiber measuring cord and pulling it level against a ground stake. When he gained the platform, his breath was disrupted only twice -- then he used the eye, cultivated through nearly twenty years of leading artisans in erecting shelters, to look at this land below where not a single wall had yet been raised: what he saw was every topographic breach and the estimated natural cut-and-fill volume between the future camp’s eastern extension to the cliff, from the material yard’s northern junction to the palace approach bridge. His brain had not yet formally filed this topographic imagining as a ”drawing” -- but his body was already computing the most convenient siting for the first shelter’s vertical-post socket: the work period under the slanting western sun was the longest stretch of the entire day -- screen the materials first, then batch the mortar, and only in the afternoon apply the float-stone leveling. He had already even mentally positioned the transport direction for the longest fir crossbeam in the material yard -- shift it from the cart-unloading staging ground half a sample-brick’s length east-by-northeast, and you could avoid that worst glare-angle, at high noon, when the sun from directly ahead would dazzle the visual measurement data.

Next up was Meru, a long-distance grain-and-fodder manifest on sheepskin rolled in his hand. Back when the caravan was still forming up on the West Bank, he had been merely a tallying cargo-handler dispatched by the Building-Supply Alliance; now his manifest had evolved from a single-item ”how many carts” of cargo into an integrated material-yard parallel-inventory table that simultaneously accounted for ”how many stops in transit, each stop’s resupply collection-and-distribution, and the new capital in the wilderness’s transshipment quantities.” The moment he stood on the platform, he did not, like Kamon, begin by looking at topographic breaches -- he looked first at the sole thing across the entire wilderness: the reflection of the Nile’s water surface. The greatest cost in a trade caravan’s transport was not grain, not vehicles -- it was water. From the West Bank to the wilderness, his station map was already precise down to the storage-capacity difference between each station -- the direct-line resupply between the last station and the wilderness was stretched too long; a transfer storage-pool had to be inserted at the midpoint. And where that transfer storage-pool would go -- was precisely the spot where his line of sight now fell, passing through the river-surface reflection: that narrow strip of riverbank gravel terrace on the west bank. Storing water under gravel was no match for sinking a deep well, but within three days a simple sedimentation basin could be built, and water brought downstream by boat could be coarsely filtered on site. He committed this position to memory -- not by coordinates, but by his eyes and the refraction angle of the river’s surface.

Mekat came up third. When he gained the platform, the short pry-bar was on his shoulder, its iron head catching a small patch of unpolished cold-iron sheen in the daylight. Reaching the summit, he did not walk to the edge to look at the view -- he took a step back and stood at a spot where both feet could simultaneously rest on that boundary between the rock vein and the sand surface: this position was his anchoring point in unfamiliar terrain -- his right hand still braced on the pry-bar’s grip, but the bar’s iron beak was already lightly set into the surface drift layer. He looked down at the sand face at the cliff’s foot -- if he followed the sand face downward and back a stretch, he could, from the shape and fracture planes of these stone fragments sorted by water within the erosion notches, recognize them as belonging to the same stone stratum as the quarry-face struck at Red Rock Slope. When stone for the new capital was transported from Red Rock Slope in the future, the first acceptance standard would not need to be freshly defined -- he would only have to stand at this spot and turn each delivered block half a circle against the fracture direction of the cliff face, and he could use the original bedding-plane direction of the Red Rock Slope sandstone for on-site comparison.

Behind him came Hapy, Kes, Mery, and a batch of apprentices. What Hapy saw was not just the wilderness -- it was the vacuum zone, twelve li east to west, without a single natural construction-material transport line anywhere on the wilderness. His brain had already begun automatically drawing the four material transport routes from the riverbank unloading point to the northern palace district, then to the southern storage district, and finally looping to the artisan village -- the gradient of each route was already being broken down by his eyes, following the micro-tilt orientation of the ground surface, into different transport costs. Bare stone would take the gentlest straight line -- the fine slope on the south side could tolerate the residual sand-sink of wooden wheel rims. The coarse crushed stone used for bedding, however, would need to be graded and screened at the riverbank, then lightered in segments -- at least two transfer platforms would need to be set up in between. His material yard had never been a patch of ground -- it was a transport network linking these points.

Kes and Mery walked to the platform’s highest edge. Mery was still looking down at the torn edge of the silt longitudinal-gradient map in his hand -- the wind had snatched half the sheet from his grip while he was scaling the cliff; he had bitten down on one end of the palm-fiber measuring cord and pressed the paper’s other end flat against a stone surface to get it back. Kes overlaid the six-bore groundwater contour map he had drawn yesterday with the central-axis positioning line he had hastily added this morning at camp -- the two of them stood on the same stone step, looking down toward the cliff base. Both were looking at the same plot of ground -- but what the two of them saw was, in truth, cross-sectional models of two entirely different depths beneath the same plot: Mery saw the stretch where the surface silt’s clay content reached its maximum heading inland -- directly beneath the chosen site of the southern-wing storage district. Kes saw the point where the shallowest groundwater catchment blind-ditch curved back to the intersection of the limestone fissures at the cliff base -- this water-mouth happened to intersect the central axis Lu Zhu had just drawn, the intersection point lying roughly two hundred cubits ahead, in an as-yet unsurveyed zone.

The last group to come up was several old artisans and young apprentices. The apprentices had no tools -- they had followed the caravan the whole way, done plenty of work, but not one of them had ever tried standing at such a height on the wilderness and looking down. One among them was Usher -- in his hand he held a gravel-preservation-period specimen of red sandstone, the last intact sandstone block he had sieved out, following behind Seb, from the bottom of the abandoned spoil layer on the eastern sand-pile at Red Rock Slope, spending an entire full day at it, the stone held in his palm for half the cart-ride. He raised that sandstone to eye level and gazed southward through its split face -- another future position flickered in the mica-thin-layer shimmer within that split face.

A portion of the crowd, young apprentices newly arrived from Thebes, stood at the very back of the gathering and had not yet fully grasped what they were looking at. On the road from Thebes, they had seen only already-built temple stone walls and noble quarters confined within dead boundary walls. The temple-faction artisans had built stone temples for many years -- they knew every temple’s foundation line, once drawn, would never again be crossed by any other use, and they knew that behind enclosure walls, the way commoners lived and cooked was invisible. Now, standing atop the limestone platform, listening to a folk artisan from the West Bank speak of all the public-function districts -- from production to warehousing to drainage -- including the commoners’ district, which could share a single straight line with the temple square -- they had at first dismissed this as nonsense. But when they heard Hapy state that ”bare-stone transport takes the central axis’s straightest line,” and heard Mery state ”the cross-section data of the clay-layer thickness in the southern-wing storage district,” among the young apprentices, someone unconsciously traced a faint line on the stone step with his toe -- he had, without thinking, drawn the new city’s very first direction-angle onto the stone face. He was not trying to build a city -- he had simply thought about it for many years -- but no one had ever told him that it was permitted to look from a limestone step toward an empty plot of land -- and then draw a line upward.

Kamon did not wait until everyone had fully assembled. He looked out over the wilderness, over this land without enclosing walls -- his hand traced a level line from left to right, following the direction of the sunrise. ”This land is ten times larger than the West Bank -- but its foundation problems are ten times more troublesome. However, we are not the same people who came from the West Bank. Back on the West Bank, most of this group had not yet come together -- now, at every station, someone has stayed behind, and every station where they stayed has already had the next moisture-barrier layer’s bedding gravel buried by our hands.”

”The northern side -- that stretch of slightly raised high ground, near the river, sheltered from the wind, suitable for the palace district.” Lu Zhu pointed to the northern margin of the wilderness -- that high ground rose gently from the riverbank, its surface spread with a layer of gravel polished smooth by windblown sand. ”The palace district need not be the largest -- but it must be placed at the city’s highest point. Near the river, convenient for drawing water and transporting supplies; sheltered from the wind, reducing sand accumulation.”

”The central stretch of land -- equally flat, but between it and the palace there is a natural topographic depression. This depressed segment must not be filled -- it is the only reverse-gentle-slope on the entire central axis that can naturally separate the religious district from the administrative district.” He used charcoal to draw an invisible line in the air. ”Place the temple here -- it borders the palace to the north, connects to storage and residential to the south, abuts the administrative center to the east. From the commoners’ district on the west side, following the drainage feeder channels walking this way, one can reach the temple’s front plaza on the central axis without passing through any separate noble precinct. In the future, whether or not there are festivals, everyone coming from the West Bank walks the same straight line on this road.”

”The southern side --” he turned toward Mery, ”all the new capital’s official granaries, transit warehouses, medical halls, and Building-Supply Alliance stalls will be placed on the southern wing. The southern terrain is lower than the palace district but higher than the lowest water-level mark of the downstream old-channel silt zone -- suitable for large-capacity storage: the base padding stones for the large granaries will all use the first-grade cobblestones sorted from the White River Ford riverbank, and further south, connecting to the boat-transport loading platform for upstream-downstream interchange -- Meru’s riverbank service road extends this final section from Hawk’s Wing Ford.”

”This central axial road in the middle -- the city’s main artery. Running south from the palace through to the storage district and Building-Supply Alliance stalls, the main road’s widest section can accommodate two fully loaded rough-material carts passing side by side with space between them. All the city’s main water-supply and drainage channels run along both sides of the axial road, converging toward the Nile -- east discharge, west drainage, the north-south orientation of the sewer mains collecting the rainwater drainage channels between all residential buildings and feeding into the western riverbank green buffer zone.”

Every sentence he spoke, an artisan behind him murmured in repetition. Mekat’s short pry-bar was planted in the earth; he murmured low to Mehptah: ”The way he describes this city is the same way he describes the split-direction of a sample stone -- he can see where a wall that has not yet been raised should have its window opened.”

Mehptah did not immediately respond to Mekat. He stood toward the rear of the platform, his back against a section of limestone remnant wall hollowed inward by wind erosion, both hands clasped before him -- those hands that had gripped chisel handles for forty years in the quarry were, in stillness, paradoxically more tense than when at work: the thumbs would not fully extend, always carrying a faint inward-curling arc toward the palm -- the tendon-tension habit left by pressing the heel of an iron chisel with the same hand year after year into adulthood. He stared at Lu Zhu’s hand as Lu Zhu described the plan -- not staring at the person, but at the rhythm of the hand. Each segment Lu Zhu described, his right hand traced longitudinal auxiliary lines in the air -- from north to south, from high ground to riverbank, from palace to storage -- not randomly gesturing with a finger in the air; every line was backed by a real elevation difference supporting the words. A person who did not understand foundation cross-section data, gesturing in the air, would attend to the top and neglect the bottom, unconsciously raising or lowering wrist height halfway through -- but the height of Lu Zhu’s right hand, as it drew the axial lines, was consistently maintained within a range of roughly one finger-width above and below the same horizontal plane. Mehptah watched for a while, then answered Mekat in a low voice: ”You are right -- but the key is not the window. It is the road outside the window. The position of a window is determined by the direction of the light outside -- and the direction of the light depends on where the road outside the window lies. If the road outside the artisan village can run straight to the direction of the light descending from the cliff before the palace -- then this window is not cut into a stone wall; it is cut into the very first foundation layer that the sunlight lays down for the entire city.”

Seb stood two paces behind Lu Zhu, his gaze fixed the entire time on the southern-wing storage district Lu Zhu was pointing at. Once Lu Zhu finished describing how the storage district connected to the material-staging transfer platforms, he spoke. His voice was not loud, but its volume was just enough that the circle around him could all hear. ”If the grain-storage foundation padding stones in the storage district are laid directly on the hard crust without piles driven any deeper -- then a closed-circuit blind ditch must be added around the outer edge of the granary base, the ditch-bottom depth not less than two cubits below the granary foundation base-plane. If the accumulated moisture under the granary floor is not drained, during the rainy season it will seep from beneath the padding stones into the foundation. If gravel moisture-barrier layers are not added at the bottom of the blind ditch, after the rainy season the first high-temperature return-baking will draw the alkaline-salt water accumulated at the ditch bottom back upward through the subsurface wet-mud layer into the granary floor slab. The magnesium-dolomite powder waterproofing layer from Red Rock Slope can be used on the granary floor slab -- but it cannot be used at the bottom of the blind ditch; upon contact with moisture it will soften, and then the hydrostatic pressure of the water accumulated in the ditch will push it upward from the lower face of the gravel layer against the lock-edge of the moisture-barrier layer.”

After speaking, Seb planted his iron spade upright by his foot and added nothing further. Every data point he had spoken, Lu Zhu did not correct -- there was no need to correct. Seb’s passage was equivalent to simultaneously compressing three things -- the calcium-nodule-layer dissolution threshold measured yesterday on the wilderness, the groundwater-tilt direction, and the alkaline-salt reflux path -- into a single engineered component: the blind ditch beneath the grain-storage padding stones. If designed correctly, it would be a three-in-one line for foundation drainage, alkaline-proofing and moisture-sealing, and groundwater monitoring. If designed incorrectly -- it would become an active seepage channel drawing alkaline-salt water into the granary’s foundation.

Hapy followed close behind; he spoke to resolve the transport-distance constraint when hauling materials from the riverbank below the cliff to the high ground Lu Zhu had designated. ”Lu Zhu, those two material-transport routes you just described -- the northern line from the riverbank unloading point to the palace district, the southern line looping from the storage district to the artisan village -- before the southern line loops to the storage district, it has to cross that old-channel low-lying section. Right now the visible depth across it is no more than fifty cubits wide. But if later, when the volume of accumulated construction materials is high and the material yards on both sides expand -- after that low-lying section is widened, can the settled-sand layer bear the residual sand-sink of continuous superimposed density from rough-material carts’ wooden wheels? Or do we need to build gentle approach slopes on both sides -- for the gentle gradient, use crushed stone or riverbed sand?”

Lu Zhu looked at him and shifted the transport route on the sketch slightly leftward by roughly two cart-rut widths. ”This section will not be surfaced with crushed stone. Use the rough-faced edge offcuts trimmed when driving wedges at the southern red-sandstone zone -- no grinding, keep the rough face, and lay them with the vertical joints oriented north-south. The laying direction runs consistent with the drainage direction -- the wheels will not sink, and the water can follow the natural joints between the stones and pass through.” Hapy nodded and recorded this paving-direction dimension -- this single idea of reusing crushed-stone edge offcuts instantly reduced the entire southern line’s externally sourced stone volume by nearly twenty percent.

Mery spoke from the southern side; he stood at a confluence angle nearly facing where the storage-district drainage channel descended to join the seepage retention basin. ”The high-clay silt layer at the bottom of the southern-wing storage district -- that is, the sampling point where the clay content is highest, nearest my section at the old riverbank. If this silt, in the future, is chronically saturated by the seepage retention basin at the drainage-channel terminus -- in a scenario where the basin floor is not horizontally sealed -- the basin water will generate hydrostatic buoyancy within the silt layer and seep upward along the clay face to the underside of the padding stones at the granary base. I recommend adding a coarse-sand buffer fill layer, not exceeding half a cubit thick, between the western wall of the seepage retention basin and the silt layer -- not for waterproofing, but to bleed off the surplus hydraulic head of the hydrostatic buoyancy, redirecting it to drain longitudinally through the coarse-sand fill layer rather than pushing directly upward.” Lu Zhu nodded toward him. ”Add the coarse-sand fill layer at the western wall of the retention basin, and connect it with the corresponding inflow side of Seb’s granary-base blind ditch to the same lateral discharge pipe outside the basin. North and south sections share a single lateral pipe -- insert a single-direction valve plate in the middle -- open the north section during the rainy season, switch to the south section during the dry season.”

Beside the incomplete simplified coordinate map, Kes added a stroke -- he corrected inward by half a grid the gradient connection line between the peripheral drainage belt, evolved from the Sennu-house seepage blind ditch, and the drinking-water distribution pool to be placed beneath the temple front plaza. The correction was not to the dimensions -- it was to the actual elevation contrast he had just observed from atop the platform: from the central-axis road base’s elevation downward, passing through the western low-platform residential belt to the riverbank confluence green belt, this section’s natural gradient was gentler than he had estimated on the drawing by nearly two full finger-joints. Gentler by two finger-joints meant the time window for citywide drainage to operate by gravity flow would correspondingly narrow -- the efficiency requirement for rainy-season drainage would naturally rise, and the junction between the main water-supply and drainage channels on both sides of the axial road and the axial road’s planar surface would need to be handled, on the riverside end, using an asymmetrical superposition method.

”The eastern side -- this artisan village --” Lu Zhu turned his head toward Kamon, ”your artisan settlement zone. It directly borders the east side of the new capital’s preliminary encampment: assign the stonemasons, rammed-earth workers, quarrymen, and carpenters each to different sectors according to different ground-platform elevations -- each sector must be no more than one station’s distance from its own material yard.”

Kamon nodded. He pointed to that low-lying slope near the cliff face on the east side: ”That stretch has a natural drainage elevation drop -- give it to the stone-cutting and wall-laying brothers. The rammed-earth workers need a flatter, more compacted ground surface; they have to shift two notches further south. Beside them, we still need to leave a furrow of the thickest gravel moisture-barrier section for Hapy’s material-yard subdivision -- in this zone, every person who wakes in the morning, the first thing their eyes see will be their own tools, not a road to who-knows-where.”

”The western side -- that broad low platform along the Nile.” He turned to Kes. ”The commoners’ district goes here. Near the river, convenient for drawing water, the terrain belongs to a natural high platform and is not prone to flooding -- orient every dwelling to face east, so it catches the morning sun. The main drainage channel runs from the northern high ground downward along the main artery toward the south -- finally feeding into that crushed-stone seepage blind ditch you designed at Sennu’s house, discharging respectively into the riverbank green buffer belt.”

Kes crouched on the ground and drew a simplified coordinate map -- marking the palace to the north, the temple at the center, storage and medical to the south, artisan village to the east, commoners’ district to the west. Into the terminus of the central axis on his drawing, he embedded the peripheral drainage belt evolved from the Sennu-house seepage blind ditch -- this drainage branch network no longer needed to be drawn fresh at every station now; it extended directly, following the standard cross-sections accumulated along the way -- from the West Bank refugee settlement, the White River Ford folk houses, the Wheat Hill official granary, the Red Rock Slope stone-pile foot -- and naturally spread toward this empty wilderness plot that did not yet hold a single brick.

”This is not a city -- this is every drawing you have made since the West Bank, all placed onto the same plot of earth.” Kes stood, looking at that river-valley plain so broad it seemed boundless, his voice carrying a conviction that did not belong to his age.

Mehptah, standing behind, looked out over this wilderness and suddenly said in a low voice: ”The temples we used to build for the gods were all enclosed behind walls; once built, no one could see them -- except the men in robes. This city has not even been built yet, and already I can hear, behind the artisan village’s door, someone sharpening a chisel.”

Several young apprentices stood at the platform’s far edge behind them -- Usher raised his gravel-preservation-period red sandstone specimen and, squinting into the sunlight at the direction of the citywide plan, said: ”I am placing this stone beneath the grain-cellar’s straw-mat layer on the left side. In the future, this will be the entire city’s southern wing, the thickest moisture-barrier bedding layer.”

Lu Zhu spoke no further. From inside his tunic he drew out the homeward-return manuscript -- the crease-marks had been folded and refolded until the paper fibers were as sparse as a semi-transparent membrane. He folded it and placed it into the outer sheath of the decree scroll, then set down the scroll, both hands hanging at his sides. He no longer needed to grip the charcoal and annotate the entire line alone. This axis, beginning from the first crenellation on the West Bank and leading all the way here, had now been drawn by everyone standing on this platform, each with their own eyes, into the yet-unbroken dry earth.

Meru pulled from inside his tunic that station map, its pages turned and folded countless times, and flipped to the final blank -- on it only one line remained. He did not need to finish drawing it today. Across the wilderness, a gust of wind suddenly rose, lifting everyone’s coarse-linen tunic hems in the same direction at the same moment -- eastward -- the direction of the artisan village. This group of people stood atop the platform, looking out over the boundless wilderness. Some unconsciously tightened their grip on the chisel in their hand; some had already driven, in their minds, the coordinates of their very first foundation stake. At this moment, they were no longer driven onward merely to survive, nor hiding from temple persecution in the shelter of cart ruts; they were the first group of people about to drive stakes into the wilderness with their own hands.

The crowd dispersed gradually through the afternoon. The first to leave was Kamon -- he led several artisans down along the cliff base, needing to dig the rough shape of the first section’s temporary drainage ditch on the northern flank of the artisan village before the midday hot wind arrived. Then Meru -- on his station map, the newly added annotation for the coarse-sand fill buffer zone was not yet dry, but he had already descended the cliff base and was heading toward the riverbank, wanting to check the berth draft depth for the stone needed to transport the transfer storage-pool from the west bank to the east bank before dusk raised the water level. Then Hapy and several Building-Supply Alliance hands -- as Hapy descended from the platform summit, his feet kicked up a small train of lime fragments, the stone dust settling back into the crevices at the platform’s edge, churned and redeposited by foot and wind. The last to go down were the apprentices and junior workers -- some among them did not look back; they jogged all the way back to the camp’s edge and used lime fragments on the ground to draw a simplified landmark of where they thought the first shelter on the artisan village’s north side would stand -- placing a rough-face sandstone block beside it to hold it down. Some did look back -- stopping a short distance below the platform and raising their heads toward it. The person on the platform was still there. Lu Zhu was still there.

Lu Zhu did not descend with the crowd. He placed the manuscript beside the decree scroll, letting the wind blow in from the south and lift one corner of the paper gently -- beneath that corner, the gold-mud sealing on the outer face of the decree scroll, its luster worn dull, showed its copper-hued seal-compression line. The two lay side by side on the due-east cliff face of the invisible central axis that transected this borderless wilderness.

In the time between afternoon and the turn toward dusk, the sunlight shifted from white to pale gold, and from pale gold slowly took on an orange-leaning density. The western cliff face of the limestone platform was illuminated in this light -- the wind-eroded textures invisible by day began to emerge: the bottoms of the grooves showed warm brown shadow, the edges of the projecting ribs dragged exceedingly fine cold-white highlights, and from a distance the entire cliff face in the evening light seemed cut into a bas-relief assembled from countless parallel geometric horizontal lines. The color of the wilderness floor changed too -- by day a near-white pale yellow, it turned before dusk into a warm wheat hue, and deepening further, began transitioning toward a tea-brown tone. The Nile under the slanting sun was no longer a river -- it had become an entire face of molten-gold mirror spread from north to south. The direction of the water ripples was aligned and continuous, all the ripples driven southward by the north wind that steadily intensified toward evening, the driven ripples and the reflected light overlapping in synchrony, so that the entire course of the central axis, from the northern end of the site to the southernmost point of the riverbank, was visible at a glance.

In this light, Lu Zhu examined the direction of the central axis once more. This time, no charcoal, no drawing, no cross-section -- only his eyes and the long shadows the setting sun cast across the wilderness. He saw the central axis set out from the northern palace high ground -- that slightly raised segment of the surface, pulled by the lateral evening light into a faint warm-hued convex arc -- pass through the natural gentle-slope depression of the temple’s proposed site -- that stretch of ground dimmed slightly by several degrees under the slanting illumination -- then proceed south into the flat hard-crust layer of the storage district -- this segment, under the sunset light, its surface flat and broad -- and at last vanish into the dark shadow belt of the old riverbend at the riverbank. The entire central axis had been painted by the dusk light into four continuous tonal bands: gold, dark gold, tea-gold, gray-gold -- four colors corresponding to the four different foundation conditions that Seb had measured in yesterday’s survey. This was no coincidence -- the color variation of natural ground under slanting light was, in itself, extraordinarily sensitive to differences in the moisture content and sand content of different soil types. The sunlight had drawn for him an intuitive version of the cross-sectional diagram. He committed this sunset to memory. No matter which section of the works began construction in which season from now on -- he could, at any time, retrieve the positions of these four tonal bands from his mind and re-align them against the cross-sectional drawing for datum recovery.

As dusk settled fully onto the cliff summit, the wind flipped another page of his manuscript. That page still bore a detail of an extremely small channel-base foundation beside the old mill village -- the channel bottom laid with three courses of river stone, yellow mud mortar packed between, a coarse-sand surface pressed flat on top. Variants of this structure, over the past three months, had appeared in succession in the offset-wall tube-well base at Front Field Ford, in the bottom moisture-barrier paving layer of the folk houses at White River Ford, in the thickened gravel moisture-barrier layer of the Wheat Hill official granary floor, and this very afternoon, repeatedly manifested in Seb’s blind-ditch side walls and Mery’s retention-basin coarse-sand fill layer. It was not being replicated -- it was having its bottom-layer filtration capacity repeatedly re-demonstrated under different depths, different water-volume conditions, and different purposes, its layering method progressively modified as a result. Its name, known only to Lu Zhu himself, was ”the bottom return-filter paving method.” But starting tomorrow, this paving method would be written into the new capital’s first formal standard cross-sectional diagram for the water-supply and drainage system, sharing a unified annotation number with the bottom filtration-and-percolation layer of the peripheral green buffer belt.

After the last thread of daylight had wholly vanished, the temperature on the platform dropped, almost instantaneously, by a full two degrees. Limestone radiated heat far faster than sandy soil -- the rock face, having absorbed the indiscriminate direct solar heat all day, was now at redoubled speed radiating that heat back toward the already blackened sky. Lu Zhu felt the rock beneath his feet go from the faint warmth perceptible even through straw sandals by day to a rapid coolness -- in less than half a watch more, it would turn into that bone-sucking chill that only desert cliff faces gave off at night. He folded the manuscript and replaced it in the inner layer of his tunic -- this time not clipped outside the decree, but reversed in position, placing the decree scroll atop the homeward-return manuscript. The two overlaid, pressed parallel together, following that longitudinal extension line of the central axis that transitioned through four tones from north to south, becoming the starting point for his next tomorrow, and the tomorrow after that. The decree was given by pharaoh -- it granted him authority over this city. But the manuscript was his own -- it gave this city’s direction a baseline root that could be verified again and again. Neither could be absent.

He walked slowly down from the platform’s edge. The sky was already dark enough that the boundary between stone step and night sky could not be distinguished -- but he knew where every step was. Every step he had taken on the way up before dawn this day, the soles of his feet had memorized the rise and fall of those wind-eroded grain lines. In the darkness, he trod the same stone steps downward -- the path perfectly matching the ascent, but the direction reversed. Coming up, he had been alone -- going down, his mind held every directional arrow and cross-sectional annotation that every person had left on the platform today. Starting tomorrow, these arrows and annotations would be moved from paper to the earth.

The camp’s fire had already been re-lit. Seen from far off, mid-cliff, that cluster of light in the whole darkness was very small -- small like a lone point fallen from the starry sky to the earth’s surface before it could find its way back -- but around it, several rows of faintly shifting human silhouettes were moving, those silhouettes passing things into the fire: a length of palm-fiber cord-end, a corner of linen mat-cloth, a station map worn soft by turning. The cord was to kindle tonight’s charcoal; the cloth to drape over knees; the map was Meru spreading it across the flat stone beside the fire -- spread out so that at daybreak tomorrow, they would measure the first true distance from the riverbank berth to the transfer storage-pool.
