Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 5: Chapter 5: Conscription Day — The Field of Unplanted Rows

The conscription order reached West Bank on the third morning of planting season.

Asaf was summoned to the district scribe’s residence at dawn. When he returned, his face wasn’t angry — anger at least meant a man still had fight left in him. What he wore was a hollowed-out silence, the look of a clerk who’d flipped through too many ledgers and run out of sighs.

”How many?” Lu Zhu asked.

”Five villages. Fifteen able-bodied men per village.” Asaf’s voice was low and flat, like he was reciting an annual report he didn’t believe. ”Age floor lowered to sixteen. Ceiling raised to forty-five. A decade wider than last year. Half to build the new royal granaries at Memphis. Half to the Western Desert border garrison.”

”During planting.” Lu Zhu said it with as much control as he could manage. The weight of each word was heavier than he’d intended.

”I know.” Asaf dropped the conscription papyrus onto the table. ”The justification from above is: ’Royal construction projects are critically behind schedule. Labor must be concentrated before the flood season to complete foundations.’ Whether anyone is left to plant the fields — that’s not their concern.”

”You send these men out now. Two months later the harvest drops. The next round of tax collection comes, and they ask why the yield is short. That lands on you again.”

Asaf looked at him. Those sharp, shrewd bureaucratic eyes had gone dull, like a bronze mirror filmed with dust.

”You think I haven’t calculated that? I wrote a report last year. Proposed delaying conscription two weeks — just until planting finished. The Royal Household Office in Thebes sent back four words: ’Military schedule. No change.’ That reply slip is still sitting in the bottom drawer of my document chest. Next to a stack of year-on-year population decline records and abandoned-field registers.”

Lu Zhu said nothing. He looked at Asaf’s face — that sun-leathered brown — and understood why this conscription clerk had been so quick to cooperate at the granary on that first day. He wasn’t a natural follower. He was a man trapped inside a broken system, still looking for a way out. Every order he was forced to carry out cut another crack into him. Cracks only he could see. But they were adding up.

”Registration starts today?” Lu Zhu asked.

”Today. First village this afternoon. Village square. You’re coming?”

Quiet. Then Lu Zhu nodded.

The West Bank Oasis village was the first on the list.

Kamon’s family lived here. His two sons — the elder twenty-three, the younger sixteen — were both on the register. By the time Asaf arrived with his two conscription clerks, the village square was packed. Not voluntarily — every household was legally required to send one representative for the roll call. Failure to attend doubled the fine.

Lu Zhu stood at the crowd’s outer edge, back against a palm trunk. He saw Kamon at the front — those stone-hauling hands hanging at his sides. Not relaxed. All the strength pulled inward, into the bones. The skin over his knuckles stretched tight as palm-fiber rope pulled too long and about to split.

Asaf began reading names. His voice bounced off the village’s low mud-brick walls, filtered through palm fronds, and landed inside every household whose name was called.

At the third name, the first wail went up.

An old woman. She dropped to her knees and clawed at her own hair with brittle hands, and let out a sound Lu Zhu had never heard in any place or any era. It wasn’t grief. It was something older than grief — a mother knowing her son probably wasn’t coming back, and the barley seed still sitting in the sack, unplanted.

Then the crying spread. Every name called, another rent in the fabric of the square. Women wailed. Fathers didn’t. The fathers stood in silence, listening to their sons become entries on a papyrus conscription register, and their faces showed nothing. Not strength. Something worse than tears: acceptance.

At the ninth name, Kamon’s name was called — not his own. His elder son’s.

Kamon didn’t bow his head. His face didn’t move. But Lu Zhu, standing behind him, saw his shoulders give one small shudder. The shoulders that thirty years of stone blocks couldn’t flatten — they shuddered once, hearing their son reduced to a line of hieroglyphs on a conscription roll.

Kamon said nothing. He stepped forward, took the wooden conscription tag from Asaf’s hand — the tag with his son’s name carved into it. The motion was slow and deliberate, a mason accepting a stone that needed careful handling.

He turned and walked back through the crowd. Passing Lu Zhu, he stopped for one step. ”Watch the site for me this afternoon. I’m going to talk to my son.”

Lu Zhu nodded.

Kamon walked deeper into the village, and his back grew small inside the palm shadows.

Seb’s father was the last name on the list. He was also the only man on the list who wasn’t in the square — because he was in the field. The barley seed for the fourth planting day still wasn’t finished. He’d taken a sack of seed and gone out before dawn. He didn’t know the conscription order had arrived.

”Seb — go get your father from the field.” One of the clerks waved impatiently.

A boy stepped out from the back of the crowd.

He looked fifteen or sixteen, his frame already lengthened but not yet filled — the joints of his shoulders and elbows pushing visibly against his skin. His face wasn’t Kamon’s heavy-boned solidity. It was the face of a farm boy still mid-growth, underfed: high cheekbones, narrow jaw, thick dark brows nearly meeting above his nose. His linen tunic had been patched three times. His calves were caked in dry mud, his feet bare, the soles callused from years of walking furrows. His skin was wheat-colored — the even tan of someone who’d spent every daylight hour bent over a field.

His eyes were the part that didn’t fit. They weren’t a child’s eyes. Too hard. Like two pieces of black flint, snapped off mid-knapping.

”He’s planting,” Seb said.

”Go get him.”

”There’s one row of barley left. He can finish it tomorrow — you wait four days, let him finish—”

”I need him now.” The clerk’s voice was as dry and hard as western-desert stone. ”Not me asking. The pharaoh’s construction projects need labor. Your family’s field — empty is empty.”

Seb didn’t argue. His lips moved, then pressed shut. He turned and walked toward the fields, each step slow, like pulling his feet out of mud.

Lu Zhu followed.

He didn’t know why. He didn’t know this boy. He wasn’t even from this village. But his legs had already made the choice.

The barley fields outside the Oasis Village stretched along a silt-flat left by an old Nile tributary, about three li of narrow furrows hemmed by palm lines. Every furrow held a bent back — men, women, half-grown children.

Lu Zhu found Seb’s father on the eleventh row.

He was a lean, middle-aged farmer, his back already beginning to curve, but the muscles in his arms and calves still clean and hard from years of fieldwork. He was crouched in the dirt, one hand on the seed sack, the other pressing seeds into the shallow trough of the furrow with practiced rhythm. When he heard footsteps, he looked up and saw his son standing on the field path, the low sun stretching the boy’s shadow long.

”They called you?” he asked.

Seb didn’t speak. The expression on his face told the father everything.

The old farmer laid the remaining seed gently into the furrow and covered it with soil. Then he stood, wiped his hands on his tunic — hands with thick knuckles and earth packed under every nail. Farmer’s hands. Not like Kamon’s hands. Kamon’s hands fought stone. These hands fought dirt.

”The last row — your mother can finish it tomorrow before dawn. Angle the seed-line half a cubit south. The flood level might run high this year. South by half a cubit, the barley roots won’t drown.” He spoke in the same tone he used for every farming instruction. No tragedy. No farewell speech. ”The stored grain bags are in the innermost clay jar. Don’t let your mother take too much at once — damp gets in. The grinding stone — I adjusted it the day before yesterday. It needs oiling. Last time you didn’t oil it, you gave the mill-woman blisters.”

”Father.”

”I know.” The old farmer cut him off. Not harsh. Just a man who’d said what needed to be said and didn’t know how to face his son’s reddening eyes. ”Joining the labor draft isn’t dying. When I get back, you make sure you harvested that row. Don’t let it rot in the field.”

Then he picked up his coarse linen pack — the one every conscript carried, a change of tunic and some dry rations, each household providing their own — and bent down, patting Seb’s shoulder once. His palm rested on those thin bones just long enough.

He didn’t look back at the barley field. He walked toward the village square. About twenty paces out, Seb yelled: ”Father!”

The old farmer stopped. Didn’t turn.

”That row — I’ll plant it for you.” Seb’s voice cracked open, one fissure, but he didn’t cry. ”When you come back — I won’t let it rot.”

The old farmer dipped his chin, barely. Then he kept walking, his back shrinking and shrinking, until it dissolved into the square’s unspeaking crowd.

Lu Zhu stood on the field path, watching this, his mind momentarily empty. In his previous life, he’d seen many kinds of leave-taking — workers stretchered off job sites, clients pulling funding, tenants forced out of condemned buildings — but he’d never seen a farewell like this. The one leaving didn’t cry. The one staying didn’t cry. The only sound was barley seed leaking from a sack and falling into soil.

His feet, without his permission, took a step forward — he wanted to catch up to that old farmer’s back, to say something. He didn’t know what. His foot caught on a half-buried palm root, snapped off by cattle and hidden in the path. He stumbled forward, and the half-sack of dry flatbread he was carrying tipped. Seven or eight broken pieces and a few dates scattered into the dirt.

Lu Zhu crouched and picked them up, one by one. The bread had picked up dry mud. He wiped it with the edge of his sleeve — couldn’t get it fully clean, but throwing it out felt wrong. Beside him, Seb was watching. Lu Zhu didn’t look up. He said, to the ground, in a very quiet voice: ”Walked this path too fast today.”

It was probably the first time in this village that he wasn’t answering a question, but just giving an account of himself to a boy’s silence.

Seb turned. His eyes — still hard as flint — met the white-robed stranger on the field path. Flint has cleavage planes. You could see what he was holding down.

”Who are you?”

”Imhotep. From the granary.”

”The priest who’s fixing the storehouses?”

”Yes.”

Seb was quiet. Then he did a strange thing. He bent down, scooped a handful of seed from his father’s abandoned sack, and held it out in his palm for Lu Zhu to see.

”This seed. My father saved it from last year. Our own stock. Never put it in the state granary. He said the granary grain molds — he didn’t trust it.” Seb’s voice had dropped low, almost to himself. ”Now he’s gone to the pharaoh’s construction site. Whether anyone will be here to plant this seed next year — I don’t know. But if you’re building new granaries — build one that doesn’t mold. Not for the court. For us. The ones who plant. This is all we have.”

Lu Zhu looked at the seed in the boy’s palm. Plump kernels. Golden-yellow. No mold spots. No weevil holes. An old farmer’s seed stock, preserved by traditional methods — better quality than the tax grain in his state granary.

”What’s your name?”

”Seb.”

”Seb. Your father was right — the state granaries mold. I’m renovating them. When I’m done, they won’t.” He paused. ”But fixing the granary isn’t enough. Your village’s household grain pits need improvement too. Your stored seed — what kind of container?”

”Clay jars. The whole village uses clay jars — buried underground, stone slab on top.”

”Underground jar storage is the traditional method. Good for temperature and rodents. But it has a fatal flaw.” Lu Zhu crouched and dug a finger into the soft soil of the field edge. ”When the water table rises, moisture bleeds through the jar walls. Last winter — when you scooped grain from the bottom of the jar, was the deepest layer darker than the rest?”

Seb’s eyes changed. Not surprise. The look of someone who’d noticed a problem only his own household knew about, and just heard it named by an outsider.

”Yes. My father thought the jar lid wasn’t sealed tight enough.”

”It’s not the lid. It’s the principle — the jar buried in soil, groundwater rises, and moisture seeps through the clay walls no matter how tight the seal. The fix is simple: before you set the jar in the pit, line the bottom with a layer of crushed gravel. Set the jar on top. Pack coarse sand around the sides. Do that — every storage jar in your village — and next winter your seed won’t come out dark.”

Seb looked at him. Something inside those flint-black eyes was shifting. Not warmth. A fifteen-year-old boy on the afternoon his father was conscripted, suddenly realizing the adult in front of him wasn’t offering empty comfort — he was giving him something he could go do, with his own hands, starting tomorrow.

”Where do I get gravel?”

”Find Kamon. Best mason west of the Nile. Tell him I sent you. He’ll give you gravel.”

”Kamon’s son got conscripted too.”

”I know.” Lu Zhu said. ”That’s exactly why he needs work in his hands right now. Go to him. He’ll teach you how to sieve gravel to the right grade.”

Seb looked down at the seed in his palm. Then he slowly poured it back into the sack, tied the neck, and straightened up.

”I’ll find Kamon. Not today.” He said. ”Today I’m planting the last row. My father left instructions.”

Lu Zhu didn’t answer. He stood on the field path and watched the boy bend over the furrow, scoop seed from the sack, and press it into the soil with exactly the same hand motion his father had used. The sun was about to sink behind the palm line. The air over the fields was transitioning from afternoon scorch to evening cool — the particular thermal rhythm of the river valley.

A few rows over, Asaf stood at the edge of the emptied village square. The crowd had dispersed. A few women with babies still huddled against a wall, talking in voices too low to carry. Asaf hadn’t left. He stood there, the conscription papyrus still rolled in his hand.

”Names are all read.” He said.

”Yeah.”

”Fifteen men from this village. Oldest — Seb’s father, forty-three. Youngest — sixteen. First year planting.”

Lu Zhu said nothing.

”I’ve done this job seven years.” Asaf shoved the conscription roll into his tunic, and his voice went suddenly, unexpectedly light. ”Seven years. Half the men I’ve sent out haven’t come back. Not from battlefields. From the royal quarries and construction sites. Stone-cutting and brick-hauling have higher mortality than border duty. Rockfall. Malnutrition.”

He turned to look at Lu Zhu. For the first time, those sharp, calculating bureaucrat’s eyes held a thing Lu Zhu recognized: self-disgust.

”You know why I cooperated with you so fast at the granary? Because you could make my annual metrics pass. Pass the metrics, I can apply for a transfer — out of the conscription department. Into granary administration. I don’t want to drag any more fifteen-year-olds out of their fields.”

But there was a question in the air neither had asked yet. ”You’re building granaries for the state. What about their granaries?” Asaf gestured at the darkening fields, the unplanted furrows. ”After the conscription — the fields with no one left to plant them. Next year, what do these people eat? No household grain. The state granary — even if it’s fixed — they can’t afford to buy from it.”

Asaf was quiet for a long time.

”I don’t have an answer to that,” he said. ”But I can tell you a worse outcome.”

”What?”

”After conscription, fields go fallow. Under current law: if land sits uncultivated for three consecutive seasons, the temple can acquire it — ’to restore agricultural productivity.’ Same price as Nekhem’s three-hundred-year clause. Three-tenths of market value.”

Lu Zhu’s spine went cold.

”So Nekhem isn’t just buying up wasteland. He’s waiting — for the fields abandoned by conscripted families to go legally fallow, so he can pick them up at a discount. Entirely legal.”

”Entirely legal. Three-season abandonment clause. New Kingdom Codex Three.” Asaf’s voice carried the particular acid of a bureaucrat who knew exactly which law was doing the damage.

In the field’s last light, Seb was still bent over the furrow — planting his father’s unfinished row. One furrow. One boy. The sun finished setting behind the palms, and the evening breeze came up off the Nile, and the first stars blinked on over the desert. Seb didn’t know that the ground under his bare feet was already being reassigned, in a legal clause he’d never read, to the temple whose seal was on the conscription order.

The law, Lu Zhu thought, was faster than any cavalry.

On the fourth day after the conscription, Lu Zhu found a solution — or at least the start of one.

In Imset’s cellar, he’d dug out an Eleventh Dynasty grain-storage diagram. It showed a nomad method: a cylindrical pit dug beside the tent, roughly two cubits deep, inner walls hardened with fire, bottom lined with a mix of dry palm fronds and coarse river sand, grain piled on top, roofed over with palm logs and reed thatch. Simple enough to build without professional masons. Its moisture-barrier and rodent-proofing principles were exactly the same as Lu Zhu’s gravel-and-sand system. Cruder. Smaller scale. But functional.

He brought the diagram to Imset.

Imset flipped it over and pointed at a marginal note. ”’This pit must be sited on well-ventilated high ground. Never in a riverside depression.’ Eleventh Dynasty nomads could use this because their tents were never pitched in wet riverbank land — to avoid leeches. The advantage is low cost — no professional mason needed. The disadvantage is scale: it stores one family’s grain, not a village’s.”

”What if six families dig one large pit together? Same principle — could it store a village emergency reserve?”

Imset thought. ”Theoretically. But the roof structure needs reinforcement. A large-diameter pit — the span is too wide for simple palm logs. You’d need a timber frame with a cross-brace: two palm logs crossed at the apex, the intersection lashed with palm-fiber rope. No iron nails needed.”

”Kamon can lead that.”

Imset nodded, pushed the diagram toward Lu Zhu. ”Take it. On loan.”

”You never loan diagrams.”

”Because no one’s ever asked a question worth loaning for.”

That afternoon, Lu Zhu took the diagram to the Oasis Village.

He found Kamon first. Kamon was crouched in front of his house, packing his sons’ gear for departure. The elder son reported to the Western Desert garrison tomorrow. The younger stayed, on standby. Kamon looked up at Lu Zhu, and his knees crackled as he rose.

”My son’s garrison kit is still missing a pair of leather sandals. The commissary says they issue them. They never do. Every year, one pair short.” His tone was matter-of-fact, but his eyes — those stone-fighter’s eyes — held an exhaustion Lu Zhu had never seen before.

”I brought you work.” Lu Zhu flattened the diagram on the packed earth. ”The village needs household grain pits. Low-cost. To fill the storage gap while the men are gone. Same principle as the state granary — gravel barrier, palm-log roof — but smaller scale. One pit serves five or six households. Someone needs to lead the villagers in building them.”

Kamon looked down at the ancient diagram. His finger traced the pit’s cross-section — moisture barrier, palm-timber cross-brace, fire-hardened walls. All of it. Technology he already knew.

”You want me to walk around this village leading old farmers and widows through digging pits — after fifteen able-bodied men just got conscripted out of it.” He rolled up the diagram. His voice was low, but the bite was back. ”My son ships out the day after tomorrow. Western Desert garrison — near Horenheb’s watchtowers. The Libyans have over a thousand people massed out there. They could hit anytime before the rains.”

”I know.”

”You’re telling me not to worry about my son. But I will.” Kamon set the diagram on the clay jar by his door. ”Fine. I’ll build the pits. Digging, fire-hardening, roof frames — one village at a time, I’ll teach them. But you do something for me.”

”What?”

”If something happens to my son at the border — you harvest my barley for me. My field is the third row north of the village entrance. I planted two rows this year. First harvest in about half a month.”

Lu Zhu looked at Kamon. An old mason whose eldest son had just been conscripted. A priest with an ancient construction diagram tucked against his chest. A village dirt road between them.

”I’ll harvest it,” Lu Zhu said.

The household grain pits began on the fifth day. Kamon took two masons and walked three villages — digging, fire-hardening, laying gravel barriers, erecting palm-timber cross-braces. One day per village, teach three lead households, let them spread the rest. Asaf issued a conscription-exemption slip — exempting any remaining villager working on the pits from being drafted for additional labor during construction. It was the only card he had left to play as a conscription clerk.

At the end of the third village, Lu Zhu climbed a low rise and stood looking out over the barley fields scattered among the palms. Some furrows still had bent backs in them. Some were already empty. Planted and abandoned looked the same from this distance — brown earth. The only difference was a faint, almost invisible layer of new green on the planted ones. You had to stand very close to see it.

”Lord Imhotep!”

He turned. Seb was running up the slope from the furrow below, carrying a clay jar.

”Today, when we dug the pit — I learned how to sieve gravel from Master Kamon. The grade you said. ’Between the fingers.’ I sieved a whole basket. Laid it in the bottom of our pit.” He was out of breath. ”On the way back, I took the leftover coarse barley flour and made a pot of mixed-grain porridge. Barley flour, lentil powder, a little chopped onion. Cooked together — thicker than plain barley paste. And it lasts longer in the stomach.”

He lifted the jar lid. The smell of onion and lentil-thickened barley drifted out.

Lu Zhu took the jar and scooped a mouthful. The porridge was dense and warm. The lentil smoothed the barley’s rough edges. The onion’s mild bite flickered on his tongue for a moment, then faded, leaving a solid, grounding warmth.

”You worked out the formula yourself?”

”Three tries. First pot burned. Second pot was too thin. Third pot — the lentil absorbs water differently. You have to add an extra tenth of water.”

Lu Zhu held the jar and looked at this fifteen-year-old farm boy. What Seb had just described — absorption-rate adjustments, water-ratio corrections — wasn’t something you learned in an afternoon. It was an analytical instinct for the way materials behaved.

”What do you want to do? After all this?” Lu Zhu asked.

”Be a mason.” Seb said it instantly. ”I told my father. I want to build walls. Not the expensive temple kind. Village walls. Low walls. When the Libyan cavalry comes, the village with walls survives longer than the village without. My father said masonry is too hard. But farming is hard too. Different kinds of hard. A mason’s hands get torn up by stone. But a wall doesn’t betray you.”

Lu Zhu was quiet. He thought of the eighteen-year-old apprentices on his job sites. They never said things like ”a wall doesn’t betray you.” But their eyes had held the same thing: the intuition that safety and hope could be built with their own hands, and that was worth betting on.

”Next time you come to the granary, bring me another jar of this porridge,” Lu Zhu said. ”I’ll trade you a grain-pit construction diagram — bigger than the one you’ve got. Big enough to store a refugee camp’s grain supply.”

Seb took back the empty jar. He nodded once. Then he turned and ran down the slope, toward the village.

Lu Zhu stayed on the rise. The new green in the furrows was turning nearly transparent in the last light.
