Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 29: Chapter 5: Night at the Abandoned Shrine — Fragments of a Lost Text

The caravan marched another four days past Barley Hill before the settlements began to die out.

The villages grew sparser, then sparser still. Where the Nile’s banks had been open wheat fields, the land now rose into low, rippling limestone hills. The sun pounded from above; at dusk, when the river wind dropped, mosquitoes boiled up from the reed thickets. Fine sand worked its way into the cart axles at every stop — the wheels had to be pulled, the axles stripped and soaked in palm oil, or the grit would grind them to a shriek within three li of the road.

On the second day out from Barley Hill, the wheat began to retreat. First the gaps between fields widened — what had been a continuous sweep of grain broke into islands separated by scrub. Then the wheat itself grew shorter, thinner — waist-high stalks dwindled to knee-high runts, the ears barely half the size of those at Barley Hill. The soil underfoot turned from fertile black-grey to a starved grey-white. Limestone bedrock pressed up through the drainage gullies flanking the track; every erosion cut was a white scar, and from a distance the road looked flayed. Kamon walked at the head of the column. The ground no longer gave with the damp spring of farmland. It struck back hard and dry under his sandals — the sound of each step shifting from a soft thud to a hard click. ”No water left in the soil,” he said. ”Half a day more and we hit sand.”

By noon of the third day, the last wheat field vanished behind the column to the right. What replaced it was a broken country of low limestone ridges, the hollows between them filled with pale yellow sand. Old camel tracks crossed the sand — hoof-prints whose edges the wind had worn to shallow dimples, some a tenday old, some from just two days before. The sand glared white under the midday sun. Every man pulled his palm-leaf sun hat lower, lower again. The frayed leaf-edges, soaked in sweat, plastered against their foreheads — drying stiff, then softening wet, then drying stiff again until the hatbands crusted white with salt. Lu Zhu pulled off his own hat and held it up to the light. The salt traced every fiber of the palm leaf like someone had drawn an anatomical diagram in brine. He turned the hat over and put it back on. He said nothing.

For the first hour in the desert, no one spoke. Not for lack of wanting — open your mouth and you swallowed a mouthful of dry-hot wind. The air on your tongue ran hotter than your body. Speaking meant drying your throat from the inside. Hapy trudged in the middle of the column, leading the most heavily laden donkey. Its ears drooped; every three steps it shook its head. The slap of those ears was the only rhythm left in the whole caravan. Everything else — footsteps, wheel-creak, rope-friction — had dissolved into a blurred wash of background noise under the hot wind.

By afternoon, the heat closed in from all sides. It no longer beat down from above alone — the ground radiated it upward. The sand grew so hot you felt it through your sandals. The stonemasons at the carts began taking turns sprinkling water ahead of the wheels to cut the drag. Half a coconut-shell per cart, no more — a desert rule Meru had learned from an old camel driver: wet the sand only in a band half a cubit wide along the wheel-track; the moment sand gets damp it clings together, and the wheel rides over it instead of sinking into dry loose grains. Soak the whole width and you run out of water long before the next watering point, dead on your feet. User walked ahead with the coconut-shell dipper. After three li, he glanced back and saw that the dried patches of road were a full shade lighter than the surrounding sand. He crouched, ran a fingernail along the boundary between wet and dry, and marked a vertical line — at the next halt he meant to recalculate the relationship between the moisture-retention rates of different sand layers and the amount of water they required. He straightened and kept walking, the lime-tablet clamped under his arm. His footprints pressed half a finger-width shallower now — the water-tempered sand was genuinely bearing his weight.

On the morning of the fifth day, the sky looked no different from the day before: clear, hot, windless. But sometime after noon, Hapy broke from behind the carts and ran up beside Meru. He spoke two words, voice low: ”Pressure’s dropping.”

Meru did not ask how he knew. Hapy needed no instrument. He had spent over twenty years driving camel trains, and his body still held one instinct: when barometric pressure plunged, the eardrum behind his right ear gave a nearly inaudible thump. He called it ”sand-ear.” He had explained it once — the sensitivity was not inborn. It came from distended capillaries in the ear, developed through decades of sandstorms blasted into his face during the driest heat. Others needed to touch a surface for temperature; he only had to press his earlobe against his tragus and he knew whether the weather would turn within two hours.

Half an hour later, the eastern sky began to change.

What appeared first was not cloud. It was an aberration of light. The broad grey-blue expanse above the eastern horizon — a band about two palm-widths high — suddenly brightened a full shade above the surrounding sky. Not sunlight; the sun still hung to the west. This was a shift in atmospheric refraction: moisture was gathering at altitude, bending the light before any cloud took visible shape. Old camel drivers in southern Egypt called this bright band ”the sky mirror” — the first signal that high-altitude vapor had reached saturation ahead of a storm. Hapy saw the band and shouted toward the cart column: ”All palm-leaf rain-capes out! Stack them on top of every cart, last layer.”

Another half-hour and the bright band stretched to five palm-widths. Its edge blurred from sharp to diffuse — the moisture was spreading downward. Cumulus finally boiled up along the band’s upper rim. The cloud-bases ran dead-flat, as though ruled with an ink-line. That kind of flat-bottomed cumulonimbus formed only when the updraft punched moisture to the condensation level in a single surge; a dead-level base meant the rising air was brutally uniform, which meant the coming rainfall and wind would be anything but gentle. The clouds drove westward faster than the column could march. What had been a distant corner of cloud now pushed directly overhead; the ceiling dropped from unreachably high to a height that felt within arm’s reach.

The moment the cloud-shadow swallowed the caravan, the air temperature fell at least ten degrees. It was not cool. It was cold. The transition from scorching to freezing had no gradient. Sweat that had been baking on every man’s skin all afternoon turned in an instant to a clammy film of ice-water, and every man shivered involuntarily. Lu Zhu, pulling palm-leaf rain-capes from a cart, felt the dry fibers under his fingers — fibers that had been brittle the whole journey — begin to soften inside a dozen breaths as the humidity surged. He was watching, in real time, the relationship between pre-storm air moisture and the fiber behavior of a building material. Mery saw it too. The lime-tablet ledger on the cart, exposed to open air less than half an incense-stick’s time, developed a faint fog of condensation along the edges of its chalk markings. The writing bled outward, the bleeding edge finer than a palm-leaf vein. He yanked a length of linen from the baggage and wrapped the tablet tight — back in the West Bank, Imset had warned him that damp lime-tablets would blur construction-schedule figures beyond reading.

The sand along the Nile bank gave off a peculiar mineral tang before rain — the smell of gypsum and calcium carbonate deep in the sand layers, squeezed into vapor by the pressure drop. Hapy caught the scent a full way-station early. He pulled spare palm-leaf capes from the cart and handed them out to the two apprentices crouched at the cart-heads.

The column found its shelter just before the storm broke: an abandoned Amun shrine.

The first thing they saw, in truth, was not the shrine but the crooked palm tree behind it. The tree grew beside a dry streambed, its trunk bent to forty-five degrees by years of drought-wind, its crown listing east. The leaves were sparse enough to count on one hand — but against the grey-yellow dunes and limestone wastes, that speck of deep green was the only living signal. Kamon used his long crowbar to beat aside the dead reeds. About thirty paces behind the palm, he found the half-collapsed stone lintel. The ram’s-head relief of Amun carved on it showed only a silhouette under the storm clouds — one complete horn pointing east toward the approaching curtain of rain, the other smashed to raw stone. The lowest cloud-layer had already turned the color of dark malachite. Rain was falling ten li away.

The column pushed the carts at maximum speed. Hapy dragged the donkey into a trot by its bridle; its hooves kicked gravel flying. User ran with the lime-tablet clamped against his chest — his entire work output, better soaked himself than let those figures dissolve. They shoved open the shrine’s half-collapsed timber gate just as the first drop struck the broken stone steps before it — not a drop at all, but a slug of water the size of a copper coin, bursting on impact into a palm-sized splash-circle.

A shrine in name only: a single-room stone structure, its perimeter wall mostly fallen, nothing left but four stone pillars and half a ruined roof. The painted fragments on the pillars survived only on the leeward face, their colors faded to ghosts; the windward sides had been scoured bare by sandstorms, stripped to raw limestone. The floor inside was littered with dry straw and rubble. Old cook-fire ash lay piled in a corner — clearly, passing refugees and merchant caravans had used this place as a way-station. Against the north wall stood a low bed of palm-timber and hemp-rope, spread with old linen, neatly folded — worn but clean. Not the cleanness of abandonment, but of someone who shook out the dust and smoothed the creases every day. Beside the ash sat a rough clay water-jar, half its rim broken off, its body split by a diagonal crack from top to bottom. The crack had been patched with palm-tree gum at least three or four times — the older gum dark and blackened, the newest layer pale yellow, layered like a stratigraphic section. The ram’s-head relief on the lintel had been smashed; fragments of the broken horn lay scattered among the stone chips by the doorway. On one ruined wall still hung a half-section of faded old cloth drapery, the wooden peg that held it still nailed into a stone crack — the wood around the nail-hole had dried and shrunk to a half-ring gap between nail-shoulder and wood. This shrine had been abandoned by its priesthood years ago. The nail still held.

The shrine’s keeper was an old man who lived alone in a lean-to of mud-brick and waste stone behind the building. His back was bent; the curve of his spine shortened his sight-line by two full heads. But he never bumped his head inside the shed — the lowest crossbeam and his forehead maintained a gap of exactly one fist-width, a clearance he had engineered over thirty years with the precise arc of his own stoop. Every knuckle on his hands was swollen half again its natural size — the mark of decades digging bare-handed in limestone soil — yet his fingers were anything but slow. Flicking ash from the cook-fire, his movements were steadier than a young man splitting kindling. He said he had kept this shrine for thirty years, from the days when a junior priest had served alongside him, until he was the only one left — the shrine closed down, the priests gone, the incense offerings extinguished, and still he stayed.

He said this without bitterness. He was not a keeper abandoned by his temple. He was a man who, even after the temple no longer wanted him, believed the well and the shrine still had a claim on his care. He led Lu Zhu around back to the small stone-lined well. The well-head was a single block of carved limestone. Down the inner wall, at every three finger-widths, a horizontal groove had been chiseled — cutting-marks left by the men who had sunk the well, from the rim clear down below the water’s surface. The old man said these marks were depth records: every time the diggers advanced one more stone course downward, they cut a line. There were twenty-seven lines in total, each about two palm-widths apart. The lowest mark sat below the waterline in normal years; only in the severest droughts did it show. The old man had scratched his own wavy line beside it with a sharp stone chip — he said that thirty years ago, during the worst drought, he had crouched at the well-bottom a whole night, and the water had risen to the bottom of his wavy mark and stopped, never reaching the second line he had added. When he finished speaking, he wedged a small stone flake back into a gap in the well-head slab — its position and angle precisely arranged so that no sand blew in during a dust storm. ”I don’t keep it for the god anymore. This room used to be where the village came to ask for medicine. Then no one asked. What I keep is the well.” He pointed at the small stone well behind the shrine. His gaze rested on the well-mouth — the water inside, under the pre-storm pressure drop, had already begun to shiver with fine ripples. The well water had felt the coming storm before the sky broke.

The old man would take no payment, no grain. When Meru offered dried meat and barley flatbread, he refused, and instead brought out half a basket of sun-dried figs from his lean-to, setting it beside the cook-fire for anyone to take. ”Shelter from the rain — that you may have,” he said to Lu Zhu. ”But do not touch the things inside. There are things in there that were sealed — forbidden to disturb.” He said this without severity. It was less a warning than a reminder of something — taboo or protection — that he himself could not quite name.

”Sealed what?”

The old man gave no answer. He turned his head aside and used a short wooden staff to stir the half-dry palm-wood in the cook-fire ash, burying his words there. Buried in the ash were several half-burned palm-wood splinters. On their surfaces, the traces of carved writing were still faintly visible, but the fire had erased nearly every stroke. Only the upper-right corner of one character remained — the sign for ”universal.” The old man’s staff moved with the same gesture he had used at the well — not heavy, but impossibly precise. The tip touched no other ash. Only that one splinter. And before he spoke, his eyes flicked toward the east wall — not looking. Confirming. Confirming that the hidden compartment was still there.

The storm struck after sundown, right on time.

Rain hammered the surviving roof-slabs with a drumming rhythm — not steady, but surging and ebbing: one moment every slab shook at once, the noise so loud a man had to lean in to be heard; the next, the wind tore the curtain of rain open and only scattered drops fell, and through the hush you could hear the trickle of seepage running down the cracks of the neighboring pillar. Rainwater poured through the gaps in the half-collapsed roof and traced a wet line along the south wall’s inner base — the line hugged the wall-foot and fed into the surviving mouth of an old buried drainage channel. The channel was half-blocked, but rainfall moved faster than clogging could resist. At its mouth, water squeezed through the gravel with a fine, dense bubbling sound — drainage was still functioning. Kamon crouched at the channel mouth by the south wall, mentally comparing its design against the gravel moisture-barrier technology he had used at the Padi official granary. The drainage depth, the trench-bottom gradient, the crushed-stone grain sizing — it was the same logic. A builder from fifty years ago, and the boy Mery crouching in the mud at Barley Hill drawing granary diagrams, were using the same foundation mechanics. Kamon stood, brushed the wet mud from his knees, and said nothing — but when he laid out his straw mat for the night, he deliberately chose a spot near the south wall, closest to the channel, where the ground was driest.

Three oil lamps were lit inside the shrine. Kamon and the stonemasons crowded behind the pillars on spread straw mats. Meru leaned against a cart, checking his account books. The lamplight reached his pages not directly but after reflecting off the half-ruined roof, the stone pillars, the straw mats — diffused through limestone surfaces and woven textiles into a soft glow, just enough to read by without hurting the eyes. Meru had opened to the Hawk-Wing Ferry supplier pricing page. His finger moved down the columns, checking each supplier’s per-unit price for each shipment batch. It stopped at the line for Sennufer — no anti-forgery impression was pressed beside those figures, because Sennufer had not yet arrived at Hawk-Wing Ferry. Meru drew from his cart’s side pocket a letter Sennufer had sent three months ago. The paper had been folded and refolded at least twenty times; the crease-lines were worn to fuzz. Meru did not unfold it — he simply folded it once more along the original creases. This was something he did before arriving at every station: refold the next branch’s letter to match the dimensions of the order sheets in his account book, using the stiffness of the letter-paper to press a flat to-do line into the softer palm-paper of the ledger.

User was winding an extra layer of hemp cord around the grip of his anti-slip crowbar, using a coiling technique an old river fisherman had taught him. He tugged it twice, then compared the cord-spacing against Hapy’s crowbar. Two heads bent together, checking the interval. ”Looped it loose again — by one turn.” On Hapy’s bar, the coils ran at perfectly even spacing, not a single cord-width off. This was no stonemason’s trade, but Hapy had picked it up during his camel-driving years and kept it as a pastime after his leg injury ended his caravan days. User undid his fresh coil and re-wound it, leaving only four finger-widths of overlap at the bar’s end. He held it up to User: ”Every turn loosens when hemp meets moisture. Loosen first, then re-tension coil by coil — one cord’ll last a year without snapping.”

Lu Zhu did not sleep. The sound of the storm was not noise to him. Sitting under the oil lamp, listening to the rain beat on the stone slabs overhead, he felt quieter inside than he had through all the days of desert marching. Driving forward under the scorching sun was a test of physical limits. Sheltering through a rainstorm was a test of patience. He pulled the palm-paper official-granary comparison chart from his lime-tablet side pouch, meaning to use the storm’s lull to finish organizing the Barley Hill figures — but his hand stopped at the paper’s edge.

He had noticed something about the shrine’s east and west walls. The east wall was not parallel to the west wall. It skewed northward by about two finger-widths. The angle was too small to see head-on, but the rainwater seeping through the east-wall cracks had exposed it: the wet stain descended from high on the wall, reached the ground line, and instead of running straight along the wall-foot to join the south wall’s flow, it veered. This meant the floor at the wall corner had an invisible diagonal slope — pointing exactly toward the location of a hidden compartment. Lu Zhu raised the oil lamp and walked to the east wall. There: a worm-eaten palm-wood partition, and behind it, a compartment. In the gap were stuffed several sheets of yellowed old palm leaf. This was the same compartment construction he had seen in the abandoned shrine on the West Bank — the very kind Imset had once hidden inside. Lu Zhu did not yank the leaves out at once. First he angled the lamp to examine the interior — both stone faces flanking the compartment were dry, no water seepage. This meant the compartment’s position remained dry even in heavy rain. Whoever had chosen this spot to seal something away had calculated: the compartment touched no exterior wall, sat above rising ground-damp, had air circulation but no direct wind-blast — the ideal micro-environment for preserving palm-paper and linen.

He set the oil lamp on a projecting wall-stone, freeing both hands. Then he drew out the outermost dry palm leaves, one by one, holding each under the lamp’s direct beam before setting it down. The first layer of leaves was seal-plug material — already brittle-yellow, the parenchyma between leaf-veins fully decomposed, nothing left but fibrous skeletons. At least twenty years, then. The second layer was half a cracked piece of coarse linen, wrapped around a small bundle of dried mugwort — not medicinal. Insect-repellent. The mugwort leaves were bone-dry, but rubbing them between his fingers released a faint residual scent of herbs. Lu Zhu brought it close and sniffed — mugwort mixed with myrrh resin powder, the exact insect-proofing formula used by Egyptian priests when storing papyrus texts. Myrrh powder was a restricted substance, issued only from the dispensary of the Great Temple of Thebes. Lu Zhu did not yet know its specific origin — but the old priest Imset was only a few steps away, and he would confirm that fact soon enough.

Lu Zhu pulled out the innermost palm leaf. Inside was not dried herbs, but a flat wooden box wrapped in coarse linen. Its mortise-and-tenon joints held tight — not worm-eaten, but originally a sealed container, its closure fibers embrittled by decades of alternating expansion and contraction between the two stone faces of the compartment, though not cracked. Lu Zhu opened it with extreme care. He did not pry with a fingernail. He turned the box over in both open palms and used his thumbs to ease the lid sideways, slowly, evenly. At the brittle edges, the wood fibers emitted the faintest tearing sound — exactly the sound of an old carpenter at White River Ferry drawing a weathered tenon from an ancient door frame, not a sharp crack but the long, drawn-out separation of fibers pulled apart strand by strand. When the lid came free, a composite smell poured out: aged palm-paper, dried herbs, dry linen fiber. Not mildew — the distinctive stored fragrance of wood fiber and paper fiber kept under decades of temperature-controlled desiccation.

He unwrapped the linen under the lamp. Inside: about a dozen-odd pages of damaged papyrus manuscript, the edges scorched yellow-brown, portions of the writing blurred by water stains. The binding method was archaic — not hemp cord or palm fiber threaded through, but extremely narrow palm-leaf strips passed through pre-punched holes along each page’s left margin, then braided into a compressed plait, so the whole manuscript could be fanned open page by page from the braid direction. Lu Zhu used a fingertip to tease open the first palm-leaf strip. The flattened leaf sprang back, and the linked pages unfurled with a chain-tension smoother than any direct fold. The hieroglyphic text and diagrams on the manuscript were aligned with extraordinary precision — the baseline of every line of text sat on a level charcoal-ruled line. This was the first time since arriving in ancient Egypt that Lu Zhu had seen a construction manuscript using a ”grid method” to control text line-spacing. The content was neither poetry nor priestly incantation, but the foundation-construction techniques of early Egyptian temples: rammed-earth layer thicknesses, stone footing spacing, the cross-section structure of wall buttresses, and a ”deep-pile + crushed-stone bedding” scheme that shared the same mechanics as modern foundation anchoring.

On the fifth page, his hand stopped.

This page carried two horizontal water stains — but the stains had only dissolved the upper half of the main text. The lower-half diagram annotations were still legible. The diagram showed a set of buttress piers. Their footings were not placed directly on the rammed-earth floor, but inserted into a pre-dug deep trench, the trench bottom laid with a crushed-stone compacted bedding layer, the column base then sealed with a clay-sand mixed waterproof course. This structure was, in mechanical principle, identical to the sloped moisture-barrier approach Lu Zhu himself had used on the West Bank’s new granary foundation course. The only difference: this diagram included an additional crushed-stone bedding layer sunk an extra half-cubit below the trench bottom into a sand-gravel stratum — a deepening detail Lu Zhu had never tested on the West Bank, constrained by surplus materials, but had begun to revise when reinforcing the well-base structure at Front Field Ferry. And now it sat on this fifty-year-old fragment, aligned to the same stratum line as the construction drawing he was currently revising.

”Someone drew an independent section for every structure on this page.” Lu Zhu lowered the lamp. His fingertip traced down a horizontal baseline marked with five short incised strokes — each symbol formed of two verticals and one diagonal: a break-line for surface rammed earth, a dense dot-grid for stacked stone-crushed fill, and a cross-section of an annular water-dispersal pit. This symbolic configuration was identical to the moisture-barrier diagrams he himself had drawn in lime on the granary-cellar door planks — except that his own diagrams lacked the long horizontal line segmenting the construction stages. Lu Zhu’s charcoal stick paused beside that horizontal line for the space of a long breath. Then he used the blunt end of the stick to scratch an extremely short mark in the manuscript’s margin — barely a finger-width longer than the line itself. It was the same kind of notation he had drawn at Front Field Ferry for the offset-wall water pipe.

Imset, at some point, had come to stand behind him. He looked down at the manuscript pages and was silent for a moment. Then he extended a finger to the last line — a fragmentary annotation in small script, barely legible. It was the catalog number of the Great Temple of Thebes Archive.

”This is a copy of the construction arts — banned fifty years ago. The grounds for the prohibition were the same as the grounds for rejecting the temple dispensary renovation proposal: the priestly council ruled that this category of knowledge fell within the secret domain of divine authority and must not circulate among the common people.” His finger descended, the pad of it brushing a scraped-away patch at the page’s foot — someone had scraped off the original custodian’s signature, leaving only a vertical stub of ink trace. Imset’s fingertip rested on that ink stump for the space of about three breaths. He was not reading it. He was touching the name of a colleague he had never met but had known for most of his life. When he spoke again, his voice had dropped a register, as though switching from a public memory to a private one.

”I saw this manuscript in the old catalog at the Thebes archive — listed on the third line of the Index of Prohibited Books. The prohibition was decreed fifty-one years ago by the Grand Council of Theban High Priests. Seven categories of texts were banned. The third category was ’construction arts and associated building techniques.’ Within three months of the decree, the construction offices of every temple across the land were dissolved. All project drawings, completed and in progress, were surrendered and sealed. Eleven priests responsible for construction were transferred from their posts. Six of them were stripped of their priestly status in the spring of the following year. The young priest who had custody of this collection of architectural texts — because he copied and distributed them to local craftsmen — was defrocked and exiled to the upper borderlands. No one knows whether he lived or died.”

Imset turned and drew from his personal medicine satchel a folded sheet of old palm-paper — his own fragmentary copy of the Index of Prohibited Books, taken from the abandoned archive when he left Thebes. He unfolded it. The writing was in vertical priestly script; beside each entry, a small mark in red ink recorded the survival status he had annotated himself while searching the archive’s banned-book catalog. Two of the first seven entries had been crossed out in red — the corresponding banned books destroyed by insects, beyond recovery. Beside the third entry there was no red line. He had not written ”lost.” He had written only a tiny ink dot. ”When I saw this fragment’s catalog number in the archive, the notation beside it was ’missing’ — not ’destroyed.’ Missing and destroyed are two different conclusions in the priestly catalog. Destroyed means the executor watched the book burn in the fire with his own eyes. Missing means the sealed crate was moved one last time during a shelf transfer, and the handlers never located it again. The person who originally took the fragments from that sealed crate — he may have brought them to this shrine, and before he left, he altered every page.”

He paused. Outside, the rain had momentarily hushed; only scattered drops fell on the stone slabs at long intervals. Then he lowered his voice and continued, as though speaking as much to the east-wall compartment and the man whose name had been scraped away fifty years ago as to Lu Zhu.

”That man was called Seneb. He entered the temple at twenty-five. His entry examination topic was the exact same one I sat for at Thebes — ’Temple Dispensary Renovation Proposal.’ Before he was exiled, he hand-copied four sets of banned-text fragments and distributed them to ordinary craftsmen still working on the front lines of local temple maintenance. All four sets used the same carbon ink — the Thebes Archive’s proprietary ink, mixed with myrrh resin powder for insect-proofing, a formula available only to archive personnel. Before he copied each set, he wrote his own name on the title page — and then, the day before surrendering the materials, he scraped every trace of his name off with a blade. He scraped the name — but not the content, not the grid-lines. Because he knew that if the name were found, every copy would be traced and confiscated. Yet without a name, the copies held no legal provenance in a craftsman’s hands and could never be used openly. So he wrote, scraped, wrote, scraped — four times.”

Imset slid his fingertip from the edge of his own banned-book catalog across to the manuscript page where Lu Zhu had just drawn his notation. ”Look here — bottom left of the fifth page. A very shallow diagonal scraping mark. At a glance you’d mistake it for insect damage. But insect-bitten edges are serrated. This is smooth — the metal grain left by a scraping blade.”

”So this abandoned shrine — was the repository for those who were stripped of their posts back then. Not a single page in these fragments condemns those who suppressed the builders. There are only scraped-away names, grid-lines that could not be scraped away — and a set of construction amendments, structural section annotations added by the copyist himself.”

Lu Zhu held the manuscript under the oil lamp. What he was reading was not a victim’s indictment. It was a letter, written fifty years ago by a banned builder to the next thousand years: foundations do not speak, but the lines of force are always honest. He turned every page, one by one. Then he pulled three blank sheets from his own palm-paper scroll. On the first, he drew structural force-line annotations for the deep-pile and crushed-stone bedding. On the second, he noted buttress spacing and wall-section reference ratios. On the third, he recopied the key dimensions that water stains had blurred on the original fragments. He offered no evaluation. He only wrote a small line in the bottom-left corner of each sheet: ”Manuscript fragment — recovered from a compartment in the old abandoned Amun shrine north of the river, by night — unfinished, but sufficient to brace everything that must rest beneath the level plane of the new capital’s soft-soil stratum.”

Imset did not help with the copying. He sat to one side, spread out the half-empty palm-leaf wrapper the old man had left by the cook-stove, and used the same finger-technique he employed for folding medicinal herbs to align each loose fragment page on the wrapper. Then he laid dry palm leaves from his own medicine satchel between each page — not restoration, just temporary isolation. When he finished, he folded the wrapper’s mouth over and did not tie it, placing it beside the old shrine-keeper’s daily knee-mat, drying by the fire.

The next morning, the storm had passed. The sky had been washed clean by the night’s downpour to an indescribable pale blue — not the blue of a clear sky, but the color the atmosphere itself becomes when every suspended dust particle has been beaten to the ground. Over the eastern dunes hung half a broken rainbow; its foot landed precisely on the shrine’s ruined ram’s-head relief, as though someone had reconnected all the banned ink-lines of fifty years back to the level baseline where they had always belonged.

On the rain-washed sand, every grain of quartz wore a water-film so thin it was barely there, and the low-angled morning sun struck a shatter of light across the whole ground. All the small things normally buried under dry sand lay briefly exposed: a broken camel-bell clasp, a half-length of copper nail, a limestone chip that had been trodden into the sand unknown years ago, its chisel-marks now plainly visible. Mery crouched outside the shrine door and picked up a stone flake washed out of the wet sand by the rain. He turned it over. One face was a natural fracture; the other bore four parallel chisel-marks at even spacing. He showed it to Kamon, who confirmed at a glance — quarry-grading inspection marks, the same four-stroke authentication that Ptah used to strike onto every qualified block before selling them at the quarry. This stone flake had been cut from some Theban quarry fifty years ago — brought to this abandoned shrine by an exiled priest, buried by sand for half a century, and flushed back into the light by a single night of rain. Mery placed the stone flake into the cord-knot pouch on his palm-fiber measuring rope — beside Padi’s old bronze granary key.

As the column reloaded for departure, the old shrine-keeper walked over to Lu Zhu. In his hand he held a small, worn limestone piece carved with a squared-spiral pattern in rough relief — left behind, he said, by the priest who had been defrocked all those years ago. The pattern was a construction baseline marker. The old man himself understood nothing of building, but the lines on the stone all pointed the same direction — east. ”I’ve never given this piece to anyone. It was left by that priest they drove out. He said it was the baseline for building a wall. I don’t understand — you do.” He finished speaking, put the stone piece into Lu Zhu’s hand, and turned back toward his lean-to without another word of explanation. Two steps on, he halted and looked back at the east-wall compartment. The wooden box Lu Zhu had removed the night before had been rewrapped in linen and replaced exactly in its original position, with a flat stone laid on top to hold it — and on the stone, two characters written in charcoal: ”BASELINE.” Just two strokes more than Seneb had carved when he was sent into exile. The old man’s mouth crooked upward at the corner. He tucked his staff under his elbow and went back to his lean-to. He did not close the door. He never did. The water in the well was getting clearer. It needed no lock.

The caravan set out from the abandoned shrine, following the rain-scoured sand road east. The night’s rain had crusted the road surface with a thin shell of mud. The cart wheels rolled over it with a sound that was neither the crunch of dry sand nor the slurp of wet mud — a muffled, elastic report, just moist enough to be right. Pushing was easier than it had been the previous four days; the donkeys’ pace quickened visibly. Imset sat in the cart, distributing the old man’s half-basket of dried figs to every person. He took none for himself. He turned the ”baseline” limestone piece over and over in his hands, letting his index finger — trained to folding medicinal herbs — trace the squared-spiral pattern. The lines were not scratched: they were chiseled. Each strike was angled slightly outward, so that the finished groove produced a visual illusion of continuation into the distance. The man who chiseled this had not been after beauty. He had been after direction.

Lu Zhu walked beside the cart, holding the copied manuscript pages in one hand and the old man’s baseline stone in the other. He did not stack them together — in his left hand he gripped the palm-paper scroll, in his right he cradled the limestone piece. The two objects differed entirely in scale and shape, yet the bearing-line of force each left in his palm happened to press in the same direction: east. Between fifty years and a single night stretched countless sealed prohibitions — but the direction of force at the moment the wooden box opened, and the road his feet were walking step by step toward the new capital, were the same line. He pulled out the cross-section diagram — the ”buttress-footing crushed-stone bedding” — and studied it once more. Using charcoal, he added a depth notation beside the trench-bottom line: no longer ”sand-gravel layer, half a cubit,” but ”five cubits deep to the first native gravel below the new capital’s soft soil.” The new capital’s foundation conditions had to pair with the east-bank silt layers; you could not directly copy the manuscript values. You had to redo the geotechnical survey on top of that fifty-year-old sketch. This, he did not write on the original fragment. He wrote it on the back of the last of his three palm-paper sheets, using the same scraping-blade logic Seneb had employed — the logic of leaving no name: knowledge may pass from hand to hand, but dimensions must be recalibrated.

The column re-entered a region of gently rolling limestone hills, the road drifting slightly westward until the Nile came back into view. The river had risen about two palm-widths from the night’s storm, the water a pale brown — the color of silt scoured from upstream — but the current still ran steady. The palm groves on the opposite bank were half a head shorter than those near Barley Hill; the leaves had been dried longer and thinner by the dry-season wind. This was the signal of dropping soil moisture downstream. A few more days east and the palms would grow shorter still, until they reached the delta front where the new capital would rise. Kamon spotted a line of new, low mud-brick buildings on the far bank — neither dwellings nor official granaries in form. The roofs had no vents, but the wall bases were lined with gravel cutoff channels just like Padi’s. People downstream were already starting to improve their own buildings. Word traveled faster than a caravan.
