Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 43: Chapter 7: The Workshop Ward Breaks Ground — Building the Artisans’ Homes and Hearth

I.

After word of the standard residential housing spread, the first person to reach the workshop ward was a wall-plasterer named Old Water-Callus—a master mason and plasterer who had spent the better part of his life building houses along the Nile, from the West Bank all the way down to Thebes.

Old Water-Callus was in his early fifties. The seams on his face did not belong to the stone dust of a quarryman. A plasterer’s face carried the mixed scarring of wet lime and dry mortar—the skin slightly finer than a quarryman’s, the fingertips and the webs between fingers always carrying a faint, pale network of shallow crack-lines from washing lime slurry off his hands every day. His back was already slightly stooped. Forty-some years of building walls—half a lifetime of plastering and pointing—had bent his spine into a quiet, permanent forward slope, and the angle between his shoulders and his neck was no longer the angle it had been at twenty. When he stood straight, his hands hung at a slant—his fingertips reaching a good two fingers lower than a normal man’s. That slant was the slant of a trowel pressed against wall year after year, the body molded to its tool. It could not be straightened.

He had walked the road from the West Bank to Akhetaten. Fourteen days.

Fourteen days. Down along the Nile’s eastern bank from the West Bank, all the way. For the first three days they still had a tent—an old sailcloth patchwork. On the fourth day, a desert wind split the top cloth along an old seam. Old Water-Callus bound the crack with a length of roasted palm-fiber cord, and though the wind still found its way through, it was better than nothing. They walked by day, resting in the shade of a tree or a large rock when the sun was at its height, and walked again until dark. At night they found a village, begged for water, and slept on reed mats spread over the gravel of the riverbank.

His eldest son, thirty-two years old, broad-shouldered and thick-waisted, walked with heavy steps, each footprint pressing deeper than his father’s. He pushed a two-wheeled cart that carried the family’s entire possessions: two clay pots—one of them patched three times at the base with crushed shell mortar he had mixed himself; a bronze chisel whose handle was black with age; a bundle of dry firewood cut from tamarisk thickets before they left; several changes of coarse linen tunics folded into squares under the firewood; and a coil of old rope. The cart’s wheels were solid wooden disks, their rims worn smooth—they had replaced at least three wooden blocks on the axles during the journey.

The second and third sons took turns carrying two reed baskets. The second son carried a shallow basket—tall and broad-shouldered, he walked with the basket strap pressing into his left shoulder, his right hand gesturing in the air as he went. The third son was shorter; his basket was larger but lighter, filled with tools Old Water-Callus never worked without: a bronze trowel that had followed him for over twenty years, its blade worn to a gentle concave curve by the stone dust of countless walls; a wooden float carved from a single piece of acacia, its edge serrated by years of abrasive mortar; a set of wedges, each one capped in bronze; a bundle of marking stakes, their sharpened tips poking through the basket’s edge; and a collapsible measuring cord—Old Water-Callus had knotted the end himself, beating a shaped copper flake into the cord’s tip, one side for scoring stone surfaces, the other for hooking onto a measuring line. He had carried this cord for over twenty years. Its graduations had long since worn to near-illegibility. But he could read them—with his eyes shut, with his back turned, he could run his thumb along the cord and feel, grain by grain, every mark the years had left. The third mark was the deepest—the one he had used to set the foundation width of the West Bank granary, day after day, until the cord itself remembered the dimension.

Old Water-Callus had built a house, once, on the West Bank. Not large—barely half the size of an AT-type dwelling. Three mud-brick rooms around a narrow courtyard, with a single thin date palm at its center. Three generations had lived in it. He had built it himself, in his twenties, when his wife was carrying their first child. He had laid the foundation stones one by one—riverbank cobbles, a cartload each evening after work, seven full days to cover the whole footprint. He had molded every brick himself, pressing the mud into the form with his own hands, one bucket at a time. The date palm in the courtyard had grown from a cutting he had taken from a neighbor’s tree—the neighbor had given it to him in exchange for three date cakes and a woven mat. The cutting had taken root and grown, season after season, until it shaded half the courtyard. Every year when the dates ripened, he and his grandchildren would sit under the tree, cracking the stones open with small stones, eating the bitter white kernels inside—his grandchildren fought over them. He could close his eyes and feel, through the soles of his feet, where the roots had pushed the courtyard paving stones slightly out of alignment, year by year—the tree’s roots had reached the foundation gravel layer, swelling with each rainy season, but he had never considered cutting it down. If he cut it, it would no longer be his own courtyard.

He did not want to go back to the old dormitory life. ”I’m too old for that kind of arrangement,” he said. He had said it to Kamon, to his three sons, to himself under his breath. Now he said it to Kamon a fourth time—and after this, he stopped repeating it, because he knew the man in front of him would not humor him with empty promises.

When they laid out their conditions to Kamon, the four of them stood on the still-empty ground, surrounded by gray-brown emptiness—no walls, no courtyard, no date palm, no gate—only the cart-tracks and scattered sand. In the distance—less than half a watch’s walk to the north—the quarry had already begun to work, its stone hammers echoing across the wilderness. Old Water-Callus’s mouth was tight, his jaw set, the three horizontal wrinkles on his forehead filled with fine sand from the dry wind. He was waiting for Kamon’s reply.

They said they wanted to work in the new capital—but there was one condition. They wanted to live together. Not the kind of ”sleep in the workshop, work in the workshop” arrangement—he had done that too many times. He wanted a proper house: a front reception room, a bedroom, a small kitchen courtyard, and a storage room at the back. The front reception room didn’t need to be large—just big enough for a wooden table, two low stools, and a corner for his tools. The bedroom needed three main rooms—one for him and his wife, one for the eldest son and his family, and one shared by the second and third sons. The courtyard had to be large—large enough for his two grandsons to run. They had come all the way from the West Bank, and this was the first place they would ever have room to run in. The kitchen had to be separate—not connected to the sleeping rooms, because the smoke from the hearth would seep into the sleeping quarters and make them cough through the night. A water cistern—he had never had one on the West Bank, but Kamon had told him that every AT-type dwelling would have one. He added it to his list of requirements.

This standard was far higher than the standard residential housing. Old Water-Callus knew it. When he finished speaking, the ground fell silent for a long moment. He listened to the wind carry his words away, his jaw tight.

Kamon brought his request to Lu Zhu.

Kamon did not embellish Old Water-Callus’s words when he relayed them. He simply stood before Lu Zhu’s stone worktable, one hand resting on the limestone slab beside him—the instinctive grounding gesture he always made when he was about to say something that mattered—and repeated what the old plasterer had said, word for word, in the same flat tone he used to report that a kiln needed relining: ”Three main rooms. A large courtyard. A separate kitchen. A water cistern. The man said he’s lived on the West Bank all his life and has never slept in a dormitory. He came with his three sons—four people, plus two daughters-in-law and two grandsons. He can’t be split into two unconnected rooms.”

At that moment, Lu Zhu was revising the standard residential housing’s foundation plan. The papyrus sheets spread across the stone table were dense with lines—two complete sets, designated Type A and Type B. Type A was a single-family dwelling: one main room, one kitchen, one front courtyard. The front courtyard on the drawings was generous—along its south wall, a fine charcoal line marked the kitchen-hearth position, with an arrow indicating that the hearth faced into the courtyard for wind shelter. Type B was a multi-family courtyard dwelling: two main rooms sharing a single light-well, with a patch of open ground at the center, the ground marked with a water-cistern position and a clothes-drying wall. Each main room had its own kitchen annex. The open ground at the light-well’s center was marked with the symbol for a single water-drawing mouth, surrounded by a cluster of elbow-bend symbols—drainage feeder channels linking to the main drainage line, their gradients drawn in fine charcoal arrows. But neither type matched what Old Water-Callus wanted.

Lu Zhu did not refuse. He listened—then he lowered his head and examined his own drawings. He flipped through the papyrus sheets and found a third plan—a variant he had drawn several days earlier and, for no clear reason, had kept pinned under a rock. The lines on this plan had been revised several times: erased, redrawn, adjusted. It was not the standard residential-unit master—it was an assembly diagram, showing how the units could be grouped together. The light-well, the water cistern, the kitchen hearth, and the water-drawing mouth were the core modules, and the individual dwellings could be configured around them.

He handed this sheet to Kamon. Kamon took it—his fingers, as they closed on the paper’s edge, moved automatically. His eyes went first to the water-cistern drainage detail at the bottom corner—a fine charcoal arrow tracing the cistern’s overflow path. Lu Zhu had already accounted for what the old plasterer would need: the cistern’s angled corner at the water-inlet junction, marked with an extremely fine charcoal line indicating a roughly thirty-degree chamfer, with an annotation beside it, the characters so small they were nearly illegible: ”Chamfer reduces water inlet turbulence and lowers the cistern-wall waterline by roughly two finger-widths.”

Lu Zhu said to Kamon: ”Tell him yes. But the courtyard and the kitchen—we’ll adjust the drainage inlet position on-site after the foundation is laid.”

Kamon carried the reply back to Old Water-Callus. When the old plasterer heard it, he did not smile—a man who has spent his life working with wet mortar does not easily smile. The small muscles beneath his cheek skin simply tightened, and then released. He reached into his tunic and drew out a fragment of fired brick—a piece he had carried all the way from his home on the West Bank, a chip from his own hearth—and held it up to the light. The brick chip was pale. Old Water-Callus’s fingers turned it over, and a puff of dried mortar-dust drifted from its surface—then the wilderness wind caught it and scattered it. His three sons saw his right hand relax, and they knew it was settled.

II.

The residential ward’s chosen site was a stretch of gently sloping ground on the western side of the full-city plan—a patch of terrain that rose roughly four or five cubits above the riverbank flats, high enough that the Nile’s floodwater could not reach it directly. Standing on this ground and looking west, the Nile was a distant ribbon of pale blue-white.

There was one complication: the soil in this area was slightly too heavy on clay, which meant that the moment water touched it, it would turn slick and sticky underfoot.

Lu Zhu had known this from the very beginning. The last time he had walked the survey—the day he had not yet confirmed it would be residential land—he had taken Kes across the full-city site blocks and collected soil samples. Of the four blocks he had tested, one was coarse sand—good permeability, but the water table was too shallow. One was a mixed sand-and-gravel stratum—firm bearing, but too far from the main water-supply line. One was the riverbank flat—too low. After eliminating the first three, that left the fourth: the gently sloping ground. Its foundation was solid, the soil was buildable—and Lu Zhu had noted, in the margin of that survey record, a small annotation: ”Firm in the dry season, but occasional rainy-season surface water may require a shallow drainage channel.”

He had, after that, gone back and walked it one more time. He had brought a simple percolation tester—a coarse clay cylinder with a small hole in the bottom, plugged with a twist of dried cattail fiber. The cylinder was driven halfway into the ground at the site, filled with water, and timed: how long did it take for the water to drain out of the cylinder and into the soil? At normal sandy loam, it took roughly fifty heartbeats. At this site, he counted nearly two hundred and eighty. The clay soil drank the water like a dry sponge—it took it in and held it.

The first light rain at the site fell a few days before construction was to begin. It was a quiet rain—fine droplets seeping from a late-afternoon cloud bank, not a downpour, but enough to wet the ground. Within less than two quarter-watches, the ground had grown slick. Kes was the first to notice—he took a step forward, and his boot sole, instead of meeting the firm rebound of sandy soil, sank into something like a thick dough, half a finger deep, and came up coated in reddish-brown clay paste.

Lu Zhu, Kes, and several apprentices spent days working the site’s drainage. The first day, before the sun had even cleared the eastern dunes’ horizon line, they had already marked out the layout. The second day, they tested with a single water-bucket and a sighting-level tube—pouring water from a marked scoop and watching its flow, the direction of the runoff mapped with charcoal arrows. On the third day, they divided the site into a grid of drainage cells—and from each cell’s low point, they ran a shallow test pour, one scoop at a time. Where the water flowed—they followed it. Where it pooled—they marked it. By the time the sun was high, the site was covered in a ghost-grid of water-flow arrows and footprint depressions, the ground already beginning to show the outline of a drainage network.

The standard AT-type dwelling foundation was then laid out: a base course of graded gravel bedding, with a shallow blind drain running along the residential ward’s lateral street. The gravel course was laid directly into the ground, then covered with a layer of coarse sand. The sand filled the voids between the stones, and the rainwater that seeped through the courtyard’s surface would filter down through the sand, hit the gravel course, and flow along the gravel’s natural drainage gradient into the main collector drains on either side of the street. The system was simple—almost crude. But it worked.

Lu Zhu walked the newly laid drainage-feeder channels into the first course of the residential foundation, then stepped back. He picked up one of the gravel bedding stones, studied its thickness cross-section, and set it back in place. Then he pulled a water-flask from his belt, took a long drink, and handed it to Kamon. Kamon took the flask. He did not drink. He set it on a stone beside him, on top of the gravel bedding stone. Then he raised his hand and drew a single straight line in the air—the line marking the connection between the residential foundation’s drainage feeder and the main arterial drain’s projected tie-in point.

III.

The signal that the residential ward had truly broken ground came from Kamon himself.

He had brought the great sledgehammer from the quarry—the one whose handle had snapped twice in years past. The first time, back on the West Bank, a stone block’s corner had sheared the handle mid-swing. The second time, while dismantling an old work-shelter foundation for Lu Zhu, the handle had given way at the grip. He had replaced the handle himself—an acacia trunk from the bank of a stream on the West Bank, the bark stripped, the wood worked smooth with coarse sandstone, the grip wrapped to fit his palm. The sledge’s iron head—he had found it himself, after more than half a month of searching, buried in a pile of new quarry stone—a block of dark green basalt, shot through with darker veins. When he struck it against stone, the sound that came back was a deep, carrying boom, a resonance that traveled through the gravel bedding course and into the hardpan below, spreading outward for thirty or forty paces.

The first slab he set into the intersection point of the residential ward’s grid was a spare wall-stone—a block the carters had hauled out of the quarry’s waste piles after someone had rejected it for being half a cubit too short. They had said: use it for the residential-ward corner. Kamon studied the slab—it came up nearly to his chest, the face reasonably flat—and had the short masons standing beside him raise it upright.

Then Kamon swung the sledge. Three times.

The first swing—the men spreading the graded stone bedding around him suddenly stopped, their hands frozen on the short marker stakes. The instant the sledge struck the slab, the sound that erupted from the stone was not the dull, muffled thud of iron on rock—it was an immense, spreading, reverberant ring, a perfectly round bell-tone that hung in the open air. Across the wilderness, not a single bird rose—there were no birds here to begin with, only a small flock of sand-larks scattered by the hot wind blowing up from the riverbank, high above them a hundred thin, darting shapes fled across the sky.

The second swing—it landed with even more weight than the first. The slab’s body, under the sudden compression, drove the loose sand beneath it deeper into the ground, and the stone cavity itself seemed to tighten. The second impact sang higher than the first—a sharper, cleaner ring, and at its trailing edge there was a faint, sustained shimmer.

The third swing—Kamon put his back into it. The wilderness under that sledge was not the same wilderness he had known on the West Bank. It was harder. It was emptier. It was silent in a way the West Bank had never been. Three swings, and then silence.

And then, from the crowd of onlookers, a low murmur—the sound of dozens of voices speaking at once, not loud, but steady, like the buzz of insects across the wilderness. Some had opened their mouths and then stopped, as if they had realized they were about to express hope, and did not want to be laughed at. Others—a few carters squatting by the side of the haul road—exchanged a glance. That glance said: this is real.

But Kamon did not care. He was never the kind of man who needed applause or cheering to know he was doing the right thing. He shouldered the sledge—the handle resting against his collarbone, the heavy head suspended behind his shoulder—and turned to the stake-crew behind him. ”Open the trench!”

That ”open the trench” was not anger. Kamon’s voice, when he gave an order, had a particular texture—a low, graveled rumble, like stone tumbling down a dry riverbed. Every word he spoke in the workshop was a wall—a wall built in the throat, pushed out into the air, and laid against the ears of the men who needed to hear it. The stake-crew had already set the starting posts for six main wall-lines—posts that Kamon and Kes had checked, repositioned, and rechecked twice over the previous three days. Now they snapped a chalk line from post to post—a straight white line across the ground—and the shovel-blades began to cut along its left edge. The first cut made a light, crisp sound—the dry alkaline crust breaking cleanly under the blade’s edge.

The six main wall-trenches of the residential ward’s first two row-houses were dug in a single pass. By the time they were finished, they had beaten Kes’s progress estimate by nearly a watch and a half—not because the diggers had suddenly become faster, but because every trench line had been set three days earlier, every coordinate checked twice, and every corner-stake driven to its precise position. When the shovels went in, they followed the lines without a single correction.

A thin dust began to rise from the ground. The dust was still fine—the morning sun, slanting low across the gray-brown wilderness, caught each particle and turned it into a pale, translucent gold. From the direction of the river-harbor approach road, a handful of onlookers had gathered—men from the nearby villages, drawn not by orders but by rumor. Some carried old shovels of their own. Some leaned on shoulder-poles, coils of rope hanging from one end. A few young laborers, their kilts rolled above their knees, still carried the white salt-dust of the road on their shins—they had walked from their villages before dawn, stopping three times to rest on the way, and now they stood at the edge of a foundation that had not yet seen a single wall.

Among the onlookers, some were still doubtful. One man—a farmer from the Theban countryside—planted his heel in the sand and adjusted his stance. ”Last time I heard someone say they were going to build a new ferry crossing, they drew a big map and then nothing happened.” The farmer beside him did not answer. He just grunted, low in his throat.

And there were others—others who had already, without a word, begun copying Kamon’s layout method. One of them—a young scribe who had been following the work since the first day—sat with a stack of papyrus on his lap, his fingers moving fast, recording every detail. He had worked for Tia on the West Bank, copying and sorting field records, and his handwriting had grown small and precise. He kept a tally of every workman who had come to ask about jobs—a simple, informal list, passed on to Nefer’s team at the end of each half-watch. He did not think of what he was doing as the beginning of a formal registration system—he only knew that his memory was not good enough to keep all the names straight, and that if he did not write them down, someone would be forgotten. He sharpened his charcoal stick against the stone at his side, and waited for the next man to approach.

IV.

As Kamon’s crews laid the residential ward’s foundation trenches at their steady, unhurried pace, he began to notice something he had not expected: the carpenters and masons who were building the walls were, without being asked, contributing small refinements that the drawings had not accounted for.

It began on the third day. One of his afternoon after-check rounds—a habit Lu Zhu had drilled into him, the same habit he had kept since the West Bank days: at the end of every work shift, walk the entire site, check every wall line’s alignment, and commit every joint deviation to memory. Kamon had never questioned it—and now it was so ingrained he did it without thinking.

He was walking the back-court of a newly laid Type B dwelling when he saw Old Water-Callus in the back courtyard, kneeling beside the position of the water cistern. The old plasterer and his three sons had not yet left for the day. They were working the bottom of the cistern’s curved stone wall, leveling the collecting surface. Kamon walked over—Old Water-Callus had one hand braced against the inside of the newly laid circular stone wall, his other hand working wet mortar into the joints between the stones.

Kamon saw what the old plasterer was doing: he was connecting the bottom of the cistern to an overflow channel—an external U-shaped stone trough, set into the wall base and aligned with the blind drain. The trough had been cut from a piece of discarded shale, its bottom chiseled into a shallow, sloping arc—if the cistern overflowed, the excess water would run out through this U-channel and flow, by natural gradient, into the stone-filled blind drain.

Kamon crouched down and studied what the old plasterer had done, his charcoal stick pinched tight between his fingers. He saw it—a detail the drawings had never accounted for. The original cistern design had been sealed, with no external drainage. Old Water-Callus, who had been laying stone walls for forty years, had seen the problem at a glance: if the cistern filled and overflowed, the water pressure would force moisture from the cistern’s base into the wall foundation. The south-facing wall, the one that caught the full afternoon sun, would never dry out.

Kamon sketched the detail into his record cloth—the cistern, the U-shaped overflow channel, the gravel blind drain. Beside it, he marked the same small circle with three vertical lines inside—his personal shorthand for ”this detail must be standardized.” His private notation system was simple: one vertical line meant ”verify this”; two meant ”correct in the next unit”; three inside a circle meant ”incorporate into universal standard.”

V.

Late that night, Lu Zhu received Kamon’s revised residential water-system drawings.

By then, the encampment had fallen silent—the only sound was the occasional creak of a shelter’s roof-cloth shifting under the night wind. Lu Zhu was alone at his worktable, the oil lamp burning low, a full-city water-supply key-plan spread across the stone slab and weighted down with a lump of basalt. He was drafting a reply to a Theban directive when Kamon set the revised drawings on the stone table before him.

Kamon had not only solved the cistern overflow problem. He had taken Old Water-Callus’s improvised U-channel and integrated it into a full residential water-system design—the cistern, the courtyard, the feeder-drains, and the main surface-water collector, all laid out on a single sheet. The sheet’s layout was dense—Kamon had taken every household’s full water-use path and compressed it into a miniature diagram: above, the roof-catchment feeder channel; below, the main drain and the discharge-port numbers. All the residential water in the ward—on a single sheet.

Lu Zhu studied that drawing for a long time. His gaze tracked the water-flow lines—the cistern, the feeder channels, the overflow—and at a junction point where the feeder channel turned a corner, he paused. Then, with his charcoal stick, he wrote a few small characters in the upper-right corner of the sheet: ”AT-I-DR-001 — Residential Cistern-to-Feeder Standard Detail.” A temporary classification code—the kind he used before any formal coding system existed. After the code, he added a short string of letters and numbers—each one corresponding to a different foundation-and-drain connection type.

Then he said to Kamon: ”This—the cistern, the feeder channel, the residential design—from now on, this is the standard. It doesn’t matter who poured the wall or who built the house—the cistern and its feeder go in the same way, every time.” He meant: Old Water-Callus’s U-channel—and the problem it solved—would become part of the permanent standard for every AT-type dwelling.

Kamon, at that moment, was sitting on the ground with his back against the shelter’s doorframe, a palm-timber rod across his knees. He had not responded to Lu Zhu’s words—he had not said ”good,” he had not said ”thank you.” He simply ran through the whole water-flow path in his mind one more time, end to end, and then nodded. A single, silent nod—the kind of nod a man gives when he has just been handed a design that will, in all likelihood, outlive him.

The old plasterer’s water channel lay on the stone table, still. Outside, the night wind was strong—strong enough that the small bronze blade at the end of Kamon’s measuring cord, hanging from a peg, struck the stone wall with a brief, sharp clatter.

VI.

Nefer came too.

She had brought her support team of women—the rear-echelon crew that had followed the construction from the West Bank, station by station, all the way to Akhetaten. In the southwest corner of the residential zone, they set up what she called a ”temporary supply point.” It was the same work these women had been doing since the West Bank: providing a hot meal and clean drinking water to the crews, at no cost to the workers, paid for entirely by the Building-Supply Alliance’s own budget. Nefer’s team was the only crew on Lu Zhu’s site that dug no foundation trenches, laid no bricks, and hauled no stone—yet every mason and carter on the site knew they were the most important people in the encampment.

The supply point’s physical plant was modest—a single open-sided shelter, its roof a patchwork of salvaged planks and old palm-frond mats, its walls a loose screen of reed matting lashed to acacia posts. Inside, the space was divided by function: a dry-goods store, a clay-jar cooking station, a row of pickling vats, and, at the far end, a stove-counter built of waste limestone blocks. The mending station—a corner where the women sat full-time, repairing torn tunics and worn sandals—was in the shelter’s southeast corner, the needles and awls never still.

Nefer had hesitated, before she left the West Bank, about whether to bring her entire operation. She had known—everyone had known—that the new capital’s grain supply would come from Meru’s riverbank depot and the upstream Nubian trade route; that water would have to be hauled from farther up the riverbank; and that anything that went wrong with the supply chain would land, sooner or later, on her. But she had also known that if she didn’t bring a working, proven support system with her—something the workers could touch, something they could count on—the new capital would spend its first year on promises and thin soup. So she had brought the system. Not all of it—just the parts that had already proven themselves—and she had set them up on a patch of ground that still held no walls, no roofs, no certainty, and had begun, very quietly, very methodically, to stabilize it. One meal at a time.

Her operation was simple: provide a hot, dense, nourishing midday meal—barley porridge with a few dried vegetables and a pinch of salt, simple food, but hot—and two flatbreads per serving, coarse-ground black barley, the bran still in, the bread thick and rough. Two meals: one at midday, one at the end of the shift. The price was set at cost. The labor was rotated through the volunteer workforce. No one was paid, but every volunteer’s hours were recorded in Nefer’s ”attendance cloth” at the end of each shift.

One day, a quarry laborer’s wife appeared at the supply point carrying a dripping-wet bundle of coarse cloth she had been soaking in the river since dawn—she had cleaned the gravel from the quarry’s drainage channels, and now she laid the wet cloth on the flat stone at the supply-point entrance, where the crews coming off shift could rinse their hands. Nefer saw the cloth—the way it had been folded, its edges turned inward, neat and deliberate. She looked at the young woman, and the lines at the corners of her eyes tightened briefly. The next morning, she hung a small wooden sign at the supply point’s entrance, the words written in charcoal: ”Food prices follow the market. Labor is not charged, but attendance is recorded.”

By the second week, an unspoken truth had settled over the entire camp: the midday meal had gotten better. The porridge was thicker. The men who ate it—men who had been working since before dawn—found that their afternoon fatigue arrived a little later, and was a little less crushing. It was a small thing—a few extra handfuls of barley, a few extra date cakes—but the effect it produced was larger than any written report could capture.

A few days later, a woman came to volunteer. She was from a nearby village—she had simply walked to the supply point, picked up a basket of vegetables, and carried them to the cooking fire. She stood by the boiling pot for a long time, watching the flames. Nefer passed her, a clay bowl in her hand, and did not stop. But she reached into the bowl-stack beside her, took a single cooked date, and placed it in the woman’s bowl.

VII.

That evening, Lu Zhu stood on the high ground above the residential ward.

The high ground’s ridge was not yet any kind of formal street—it was still just a low, natural rise, a swell in the earth, barely a cubit and a half above the level of the residential foundations. Coarse, stiff-haired sand-grass still bristled from its flanks—the grasses already bleached a dead, pale straw-color by a full season of sun—and at their base, where Lu Zhu’s foot disturbed them, the soil was damp. From this vantage, the residential ward below had already advanced to the point where the first half of the foundation grid stood in the evening light as a pattern of shadowed trenches, each trench a straight, dark line in the earth. The trenches were not deep—no more than a man’s knee, the width of a handspan—but the low angle of the evening sun, slanting across the ground, transformed each trench into a channel of deep amber shadow. The first grid held an AT-type single-family foundation trench; the second, a multi-family courtyard trench; and in the far distance, at the edge of the grid, the still-wet trenches of several courtyard dwellings gleamed with a dark, damp sheen.

Lu Zhu clasped his hands behind his back—his left hand pressing into the hollow of his right palm. He was thinking of the small access road that Mery and Meru had added to the residential block—the road that had been rerouted, at the last moment, to accommodate a slight adjustment in the drainage-line gradient. The adjustment had taken the better part of an afternoon—a crew of laborers had to dismantle a section of formwork, lift a stone slab back onto a cart, and reset it at the new alignment—and Lu Zhu had watched them do it, working into the gathering dusk, their bodies silhouetted against the low, copper-bottomed clouds of the evening sky.

The clouds were very low—the kind of high, flat-bottomed cloud that forms on the wilderness only in the dry season, its base stained a deep copper by the setting sun. And far off, at the very edge of the wilderness where the sand blended into the sky, a wild fox—a lean, dust-colored animal with a thick, brushy tail—burst from behind a dune and ran, low and fast, across the sand. It crossed the surveyor’s track-line, stopped for an instant—its head lifted, its ears swiveling—and in that instant its silhouette, a dark, sharp-edged profile against the orange light, looked for all the world like a wolf. Then it shook its head and turned east, toward the river, and was gone.

Kamon was sitting on the foundation stone platform at the foot of the high ground—the platform was a rough, undressed wall-stone, not yet hoisted into place, its surface flat and even. He had spread his coarse-linen record cloth across his knee, and his charcoal—worn nearly to a stub—was in his hand. He was drawing a small detail—the overflow-angle adjustment he had sketched earlier at the cistern’s collar, now refined into a proper detail drawing. The adjustment was simple: a slight concavity in the stone collar that would guide overflow water into a small, stone-filled blind drain—enough to carry off the surface runoff from the entire courtyard, without a single additional drain-line.

He said to Lu Zhu: ”I think this city is really going to stand. I see people starting to set their own cisterns in their own courtyards—they never used to do that when they were just working on other people’s projects.”

Lu Zhu looked down from the high ground at an angle that took in the entire residential foundation grid—and, at its edge, the small clusters of jars and pots and half-buried cistern liners that individual households had already begun to set into the ground. The coarse clay cisterns, each with a base diameter wider than a man’s head, were being bedded into the gravel at the bottom of each courtyard. One of Old Water-Callus’s daughters-in-law, while the clay was still damp, had traced a curved, looping line across its surface with her small finger—a pattern she remembered from the cistern in her mother’s courtyard on the West Bank. It meant: this cistern is mine from now on.

Lu Zhu looked at Kamon. ”A house is not just walls and a courtyard. A home is the place where you’re willing to sink a cistern—and leave it there forever.”

He said this, and then he set the measuring rod he had been leaning on into the ground with a soft thump. He remembered the nights on the West Bank, when he and Kamon would sit against the wall of a finished courtyard after a long day’s work, listening to the sound of water being poured into a new cistern from a neighbor’s courtyard—the sound of water falling into stone, clear and steady. That was the sound he meant.

Neither of them spoke for a long time. Not because there was nothing to say—but because, from the direction of Nefer’s supply point, a thread of smoke drifted across the ward and settled over the foundations—the smell of scorched barley bread and the sweet, dense aroma of date cakes, the scent of an evening meal, warm and simple.

Lu Zhu rose and walked down from the high ground, along the gravel path that led toward the ditch-diggers’ shelters. He walked slowly, his pace suggesting he was still thinking through something. After about a hundred paces, he stopped for a moment at the entrance of a tool-shelter. Inside, under a low oil lamp, an old ditch-digger was wiping a length of copper measuring-rod with a piece of old cloth. The rod’s end had been worn smooth and bright by years of use, and in the lamplight it gave off a warm, muted amber gleam. The old man did not look up. He simply continued wiping the rod from end to end, unhurried, as though he had all the time in the world. Lu Zhu watched for a moment, then moved on. He wanted to check the drainage gradient at the AT-3 cistern on the residential ward’s south side—the walls were about to go up, and he needed to confirm, one last time, that the overflow channel’s slope matched the specification on the drawings.
