Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 11: Chapter 1: The Old King Fades --- Storm Clouds Over the West Bank

Word of Amenhotep III’s failing health reached the West Bank on the thirty-seventh day after the refugee settlement was completed—counting from the day the last gravel drainage layer was laid.

It didn’t come via the royal courier route. Courier relays ran from Thebes to Memphis on the main road; the West Bank, a riverside backwater, was never on any official route. The news bled downward, layer by layer, like water seeping through cracked mud. The Theban palace physician mentioned the frequency of the pharaoh’s blood-flecked cough to a servant procuring medicines. The servant mentioned it to a low-ranking priest at the Great Temple of Amun. The priest muttered something to a flatbread vendor while buying his morning meal at the city market. The vendor’s son was an apprentice in Kamon’s Stone Masons’ Guild on the West Bank, and on his way to work, he casually relayed it to his master—who, after finishing his shift, crouched in the back courtyard of the granary eating his evening flatbread and dropped the news to Lu Zhu in the same tone he’d use to mention tomorrow’s gravel delivery.

”They say the old king is failing.”

Lu Zhu’s flatbread stopped halfway to his mouth. He took a moment to absorb the full weight of the sentence. In the history books of his previous life, Amenhotep III had been the ninth pharaoh of Egypt’s Eighteenth Dynasty. He’d reigned for thirty-eight years. His later years were marked by indolence. Temple power swelled to unprecedented heights during his reign, and the seeds of the border crises that would later erupt were all planted in his twilight. His son, Amenhotep IV, would succeed him—and in the fourth year of his reign, change his name to Akhenaten and launch the most radical religious reform in ancient Egyptian history.

But if history held its course—the gap between the old king’s death and the new king’s consolidation would not be peaceful. Power transitions were always peak season for land grabs and hoarding. The people at the bottom always got harvested in the vacuum.

”Is the information reliable?” Lu Zhu set the flatbread down.

”Not reliable—just word of mouth.” Kamon stuffed another piece of bread into his mouth. ”But the timing is concentrated. My apprentice heard it at the quarry this morning too—said the Theban palace has closed its doors to visitors. Foreign envoys and Nubian tribute caravans are being turned away. That kind of thing usually isn’t rumor.”

Lu Zhu set down his bowl and walked to the center of the granary’s back courtyard. Seb and Hapy were crouched in the corner, sieving gravel for the next round of drainage layers—the settlement was complete, but for the surrounding villages, the grain-pit retrofit program was just beginning. Both boys looked up simultaneously, saw Lu Zhu’s expression, and set down their palm-fiber screens without being told.

”Find Asaf. Tell him to come straight from the archive to the intake shelter tonight for council. Then go to the market—get Meru. Then to the shrine—tell Imset and Shafi to double tomorrow’s medicinal flatbread distribution. If the old king really is about to go, the refugee population will swell sharply within the week. Risk of dysentery and fever goes up with every new arrival.”

Seb nodded once and was already running. Hapy was half a beat slower—he slid his sieved gravel into a neat pile before standing to follow. This was the unspoken division of labor between them: Seb memorized every word of every message with exact precision; Hapy confirmed that the work in his hands was in a safe state before leaving it. A farmer’s orphan and a quarry orphan, with no one arranging anything, had each grown complementary professional instincts.

As Seb ran past the market, he heard raised voices near the settlement entrance. A farmer, trying to get his grain cart through before any blockade went into effect, had sunk an axle into the drainage ditch. A merchant standing nearby waved half a flatbread and shouted, ”Stop shoving your cart in right now!” The farmer shot back over his shoulder, ”You’re blocking the road with your bread—move aside!” Seb didn’t stop running. But he filed the incident away in his head—he’d need to tell Lu Zhu later: the drainage ditch at the entrance wasn’t deep enough. Carts couldn’t cross it. As he ran, he bent down, scooped up a piece of broken pottery, wiped it against his tunic, and scratched a rough cross-section of the ditch onto its surface. He’d report it properly when he got back.

Nefer stood at the edge of the drying yard, still framed by rows of unfinished mud bricks. She’d overheard Lu Zhu’s orders and didn’t walk over to ask any questions. She just turned to the woman beside her and said: ”Don’t flip the bricks tomorrow morning. Pull out the spare palm-timber poles first and clear the back of the intake shelter. We may need to add beds.”

A few half-grown goatherds slipped into the shelter and helped themselves to dried dates, only to be caught red-handed by Nefer, who sentenced them to helping screen gravel for moisture-proofing. Their laughter drifted across the drying yard for a while, then faded into the thickening weight of the late afternoon.

That night, the council around the intake shelter’s campfire ran from the first sparks until the moon was high overhead.

Asaf arrived last. He’d left the Temple Land Office archive well past dusk, still carrying the smell of old papyrus and settled dust. Several papyrus scrolls of land records, copied overnight, were tucked inside his tunic. He sat down without preamble, pulled the scrolls out, spread them across a flat stone, and ran his finger along a row of altered entries. Then he opened with a single sentence. ”If the old king goes—at least two factions will race to claim land on the West Bank. One is the Amun old priesthood. They’re already sitting on tracts of unused land, and they won’t say no to one more plot. The other is noble household stewards—the kind that work for viscounts. The kind Kamon carved lotus petals for in Memphis. They’ll use the transition window, when every local office is waiting for the new pharaoh’s appointments and no one has the attention to scrutinize deeds, to register untitled ancestral farmland as vacant—and file it under their own names.”

”Their methods are different,” Kamon said.

”Different. The old priests change the law—expand the definition of ’three-season fallow’ to include war-damaged and conscription-abandoned land. You’ve seen that one already. The noble stewards use legal registration—they file clean paperwork while the local land office is caught between administrations, awaiting the new pharaoh’s appointments. They take farmland that farmers have worked for generations but never formally registered—and reclassify it as vacant on paper. Cleaner than the eviction you witnessed in Memphis. No one needs to push down a wall. They just change a few words on a document.”

Asaf spoke with his finger tracing the creases at the edge of the scrolls. It was the first time he’d ever laid archive evidence on the table openly, rather than keeping it hidden in his tunic. After fifteen years as a copy clerk, he no longer wanted to be a man who only transcribed numbers and said nothing.

Meru crouched by the fire, charcoal stick in hand, drawing something on a sheet of palm-paper. Not accounts. A distribution map—every building-materials merchant along the West Bank’s Nile frontage. He finished, flipped the paper, and held it up for everyone to see.

”If the old king dies—what follows are surcharges on taxes and conscription. The new pharaoh, securing the treasury, will go after the gaps the old king left. Won’t fall on the temples. Won’t fall on the nobles. It’ll fall on people who aren’t on any official registry. Our settlement—how many people now?”

”End of last month—one hundred twenty-three. That’s the intake shelter, the refugee shelters, and the market stall-holders combined,” Nefer said.

”Of those hundred and twenty-three—how many have formal household registration with any?”

Nefer was quiet for half a breath. ”Fewer than ten.”

Meru set his charcoal down. ”Fewer than ten registered people, living among a hundred and thirteen unregistered, surviving on a market that charges no stall fees and four granaries they built with their own hands—in the eyes of the new pharaoh’s treasury, that’s a hundred and thirteen tax evaders who’ve never contributed a single grain of tax barley. He won’t care that you were refugees. He won’t care that you just crawled out of a war. He’ll only see numbers in a ledger that don’t add up.”

”We need to complete two things before the old king goes—or before Akhenaten consolidates.” Lu Zhu took his charcoal stick and scratched a quick diagram in the dirt. ”First: register every unregistered refugee in this settlement. Give them formal ’settlement resident’ status. Whether or not the new court recognizes a West Bank settlement registry—if we have complete identity records, population data, and written proof that these people are farming and laboring in this settlement, we’ll have something to negotiate with when the levies come. Second: upgrade the granary defenses from ’rodent-proof and moisture-proof’ to ’people-proof.’”

He pointed at his dirt sketch—four weak points on the settlement perimeter wall, each with its reinforcement method noted beside it. ”What refugees fear most isn’t officials coming to collect grain taxes. It’s desperate men coming to steal the grain itself. Regime change always brings chaos—someone raids a temple, someone raids a state granary, someone raids their neighbor’s half-sack of barley. Our granaries right now have drainage layers. Firebreaks. Rodent seals. Nothing that stops a human being.”

Kamon studied the dirt sketch for a long time. Then he stood. And said something that silenced the entire tent.

”I’ll start reinforcing the wall at first light. But Lu Zhu—I want to ask you something. If the new pharaoh takes the throne, and the first levy he sends is aimed straight at this settlement—what are you going to do?”

Lu Zhu didn’t answer right away. The firelight cut his jawline sharp. In his previous life, he’d done countless project proposals—the client’s demand was always to make bricks without straw, to solve the most complex problems with the smallest budget. But previous-life clients never sent men to tear down the walls you’d built. These ones would.

”If that day comes,” he said, ”we won’t be standing in front alone. This settlement isn’t mine. It’s yours.”

No one spoke. But no one left either.

Imset sat in the farthest corner, a chamomile root wrapped in coarse linen in his hand, having not uttered a single word since the council began. But in the silence that followed Lu Zhu’s last sentence, he dipped his chin once. His gaze drifted toward the palm grove beyond the shelter, where the night wind rustled through the fronds. The chamomile root turned a half-circle between his fingers, then disappeared back into his robe. The resentment of being framed and stripped of rank three years ago, faced with the faces of these refugees, was slowly turning into a different kind of certainty. His temple was no longer in Thebes.

After the council broke, Lu Zhu didn’t go back to his hut immediately. He crouched beside the dirt diagram he’d drawn, staring at the four marked weak points. His fingers tapped the ground twice, absently—a habit from his old life, but now he wasn’t tapping a blueprint line, he was tapping mud. For the first time, he understood that building houses alone couldn’t stop human disaster.

Seb and Hapy didn’t go back to the apprentice dormitory. They each grabbed a palm-fiber measuring cord and walked to the southeast corner of the settlement wall. The moon was bright enough to read the mortar lines between every course of mud-brick.

Seb pulled the cord vertical from the wall base to the top of the parapet, squinting against it. ”This section—the one we raised two months ago with the spare bricks. We added about two and a half cubits. Just enough to block a grown man’s line of sight. But if someone stands on another man’s shoulders—two and a half isn’t enough. Needs three cubits. Plus an outward-angled cap on the parapet—gives climbers no foothold.”

Hapy hauled gravel sacks from behind the intake shelter and lined them up at the wall’s base, one by one. ”This isn’t for moisture. What’s it for?”

”Footing. After we raise the parapet—if anyone tries to kick the wall at the base, the gravel pile absorbs the impact.” Seb crouched and patted the row of sacks. ”Leftover edge-grade gravel from the quarry. Master Kamon said we could use it directly. No re-sieving needed.”

”When did you start drawing wall plans?”

Seb didn’t answer. He wound the measuring cord around his forearm, then pulled from inside his tunic the palm-paper he drew on every night. It wasn’t a grain-pit diagram anymore. It was a simplified perimeter-wall cross-section: parapet height, gravel buffer layer, firing-port positions at two corner posts. His first complete defensive-structure drawing. The strokes were denser and finer than anything he’d drawn before.

”The day the conscription clerks took my father—I told you I wanted to build walls. Remember?”

”I remember. You said it on the field path.”

”Back then, the wall I was thinking of was this high.” Seb held his hand at chest height. ”One man’s height. Just high enough to stop a conscription clerk. The wall I’m drawing now is two men taller than that one. It’s not for conscription clerks. It’s for whatever comes—whenever it comes.”

Hapy crouched beside him, patting each gravel sack to confirm the tie was tight. He didn’t say anything like ”your father would be proud.” He and Seb were both past the age of needing to hear that. He just crouched there, with the same focused attention he’d used as a child, secretly watching the old stonemasons repair querns at the quarry—and packed the gravel sacks at the wall base so tight not a single gap remained. Then he stood, compared the wall height against Seb’s diagram, and wrote four characters on a flat stone beside the gravel sacks, using charcoal.

Edge-Grade Gravel — Batch Mark.

It was the first time in his life he’d written a materials annotation. No one had taught him. He’d watched the quarry foreman mark wooden shipment crates with charcoal—batch numbers—before every lot of stone went out. He’d memorized it. Now he applied the same method to the gravel buffer layer of a wall he was responsible for.

Seb glanced at him. ”That’s pretty well written.”

”It’s crooked.”

”Crooked is still better than your master’s. Half the time I’m guessing what Master Kamon’s characters are supposed to be.”

Hapy laughed—very quietly, almost inaudible under the moonlight. Two boys stood at the base of a wall, one holding a palm-paper covered in defensive-structure drawings, the other crouched over gravel sacks writing batch marks. While everyone else slept or sat around a campfire debating the political situation—they had begun their defense in the only way they knew how. Not discussion. Not worry. Not waiting. Drawing plans. Marking batches.

When Kamon started reinforcing the wall, his masons didn’t ask a single question. They just pulled their chisels from their tool pouches and took positions at the four corner posts, working in silence. The young mason’s apprentice stood on the parapet passing bricks down—the same rhythm he’d used on the viscount’s estate in Memphis, passing lotus-pattern stone blocks to the master mason. Later, he told Kamon that it was the only ”real craft” he’d learned in those months. Brick-passing. Not looking at the drawings. Looking at the hands. On a job site, they called the brick-passer the ”feed hand”—a good feed hand, the mason never had to look back. Hand out, brick lands in the palm. That young mason had spent months as a feed hand on the viscount’s estate. Now he was feeding not lotuses—but parapet blocks.

Kamon took the first brick and glanced at him. ”You fed lotus blocks at this speed in Memphis?”

”Faster. Because I was afraid the steward would yell at me. Now I’m not afraid of you—but I know the people sleeping behind this wall include me.”

Kamon said nothing. He laid the brick into the parapet gap and pressed it flush with his palm—basic masonry, thirty years of it. But this time, pressing the brick home, he held it a half-beat longer than necessary. Not checking the stability. Just—the first time in thirty years—feeling that every brick he laid had something to do with himself.

Nefer walked over from the drying yard and saw the whole crew of stone masons standing on the parapet, every man’s coarse linen tunic soaked at the shoulders with night dew. They weren’t rushing—the main wall structure had been finished months ago, this was just fine reinforcement—but no one was stopping. She carried a large clay jar of thin barley porridge back to the cookhouse beside the drying yard and added another palm-wood stick to the warming fire. She didn’t ask ”how much longer are you going to work.” She knew these men would work until dawn.

By the next morning, as the rumors spread further, a peculiar kind of quiet asset migration began in the villages surrounding the settlement. It wasn’t panic—panic was at least a visible reaction. This was something more insidious. No noise. Farmers began loading hand-woven palm-leaf carts with barley sheaves, dried meat, and scraps of cloth, and wheeling them toward the settlement. Not to trade. To store. In their eyes, this place—which a few months ago had been a rubble-strewn scrap yard and was now twenty-some standardized mud-brick houses and four gravel drainage channels—was more reliable than any state granary the pharaoh had ever designated.

Lu Zhu stood beneath the watch-post at the settlement entrance, watching one donkey cart after another pour in from the village direction. His hand, behind his back, was gripping the chamomile root Imset had pressed into his palm that morning—to boost immunity. ”You’ve been sleeping less and less every night these past months. Don’t collapse at the critical moment.” He didn’t have time to collapse. He sent word to the market to clear a temporary free-storage zone in one corner, staffed by Nefer’s women’s team. They logged every item—who stored what, where it was placed—and marked simple charcoal number-grids on the gravel floor at the zone entrance.

By dusk, the first scattered onlookers began appearing outside the settlement perimeter. Not farmers with goods to store. Drifters—people with nothing to store, and no qualification for a shelter bed. They simply stood outside the settlement wall and watched, silently, as the masons raised it, brick by brick.

Lu Zhu sent Seb and Hapy out with two buckets of warm water—not porridge, just water. No one survives on water alone. But crouching outside a wall all day, drinking something warm at least keeps your teeth from feeling cold.

The two boys set down the buckets and didn’t leave immediately. Hapy stood beside the water bucket, facing the strangers crouched against the wall, and gathered the courage to say something he’d rehearsed in his head all the previous night—something he wasn’t sure he had the standing to say.

”This wall—we built it. If you’re cold tonight and want to come inside to sleep—don’t climb. The shelter entrance up ahead has a night watchman. Just tell him.”

No one among the onlookers answered. But a woman holding a child set her empty clay bowl gently beside the bucket and walked toward the shelter entrance, head lowered. Her silhouette receded into the dusk, the slow, relentless walk of a woman who’d exhausted every reserve of strength and kept moving anyway. Behind her, the wall kept rising. And somewhere in the shadows beyond the palm grove, men in white linen were watching.

That night, the side hall of the West Bank Amun shrine still held a lit oil lamp. Three low-ranking priests who had ridden through the night from Thebes sat around the offering table. The one leading them was Nekhem’s steward—a man with high cheekbones whose lips never moved when he spoke. The West Bank shrine keeper placed a stack of papyrus sheets before them: the names of herbalists who had privately supplied Imset over the past three months, the head count of Kamon’s stone masons, the daily trade volume of Meru’s market. The steward had also visited three village elders that night, promising them reduced offerings and priority quarry work in exchange for hiding refugee numbers and helping with future grain collections. The elders agreed to his face—then quietly sent word to the settlement.

”That retired priest still won’t shut his mouth,” the steward said, rifling through the lists. His voice was dry and thin. ”Once the old king goes, the West Bank will become prime land. Lord Nekhem’s orders—while everyone is still mourning, seal off whatever land you can. Cut off whatever grain supply you can. That foreigner, Lu Zhu, is no fool. But he has no authority over temple affairs.”

He slid the lists into the inner fold of his robe, then added one more instruction to the shrine keeper: ”Starting tomorrow, go door to door through the villages collecting passage offerings. Half a sack of barley from every household. Those who cannot pay—write their names down. From that day forward, their land falls under the temple’s care.”

The shrine keeper stood still for a moment, then nodded once. The oil lamp in the side hall flickered. Its light fell across the palm grove outside, like an invisible thumb already pressing down.

The night swallowed the palm grove whole. The shrine priest tucked the newly signed registry into his robe and walked the gravel road toward Thebes, his steps deliberately light; the settlement’s watch-fires flickered on, one by one, casting warm light against the mud-brick walls, steady and low. Two paths, one dark and one bright, faced each other across the West Bank night—the calculations of the powerful and the self-preservation of the common people, locked in silence. No one knew whom the coming storm would claim. But those inside the walls were already gripping their bricks a little tighter.
