Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 14: Chapter 4: The Masons Divide --- Old Ways, New Paths

Dawn over the West Bank quarry. The air was thick with limestone dust, fine as sifted flour, settling on every surface.

A few half-grown apprentices crouched beside the stone pile, squabbling over a water gourd, splashing each other until they were streaked with white dust. The water-carrier woman stood at the edge, laughing: ”Any more of that and there’ll be no barley tea for anyone today.” Their laughter scattered across the yard, cutting through the morning tension. The old masons were sharpening their chisels in front of the work-shed, the rhythmic scrape of copper on whetstone punctuating the morning quiet. The old ones were mostly silent, their faces the color of iron, their eyes tracking something no longer visible. The young ones were nudging each other, murmuring about wages and markets. What they cared about wasn’t theology. It was what their chisels could earn.

The decree copy was unstrapped from the donkeys and posted on the shrine gate. A literate man in the crowd read it aloud. When he finished, the gathered villagers passed through a very specific sequence: first, a tight, electric silence—the silence of several dozen people suddenly reweighing everything they’d taken for granted about their futures. Then, an explosion of voices.

The first to speak was the eldest mason present—a short, stocky man nearing sixty, every knuckle swollen and distorted from forty years of gripping a stone chisel. He set down the limestone rough-block he’d been carrying toward the shrine’s repair site, laid it on the packed earth with surprising gentleness, and said, loud enough for everyone to hear: ”I’ve cut stone for the Amun temple forty years. Today they tell me it’s closed. Who do I pass my craft to now?” His voice wasn’t loud, but his hands—those distorted hands—were trembling. Not from anger. From the involuntary tremor of a person whose entire framework of meaning had just been pulled out from under him.

Kamon was already in the crowd. He hadn’t planned to convene anyone; the masons had gathered on their own. He stood at the center, flanked by old masons on one side, young ones on the other. Lu Zhu stood at Kamon’s shoulder, silent throughout.

Before the arguments could begin, Seb appeared at the quarry entrance, carrying a palm-fiber drawing board, with Hapy behind him lugging a bundle of wooden planks. The two boys had been assigned to set up a temporary registration station at the quarry. Hapy dropped the planks to the ground, pulled out a charcoal stub, and sketched a quick layout: ”Temporary ledger tables here. Once the meeting’s done, we’ll divide the stockpile into three zones—rough stone, finished stone, waste stone—and put up palm-fiber shelters over each.” Seb spread his drawing flat on the ground, roughing out a quarry zoning plan, marking the screening and stacking areas in the margins. They set to work assembling the frames, and a few of the younger apprentices wandered over to help hold the uprights, shoving each other for the best spots, the collision of planks and laughter mixing with the morning dust. The hammers and shouting had barely settled before the gathering moved into the council shed behind the granary.

Kamon called both sides into the settlement. Old masons on one side. Young masons on the other. Between them, on the low wooden table, he placed two things: a copy of the decree, and a stone chisel. Not the specialized ceremonial chisels the temple issued. This was the common standard chisel Kamon used on every civilian job site.

”Everyone’s heard the decree,” Kamon said. ”I’m not here to defend the temple, and I’m not here to explain the pharaoh. Both sides have their reasons. But today someone has to say things out loud. Who starts?”

A young mason stood first—a stocky man not yet thirty, hands already rough as sandstone. ”I repaired temple courtyard walls for five years. Every planting season, they dragged me off my own field to do it, no wages, just a few coarse flatbreads. Now they’re shuttered—I don’t see the tragedy. You want to know who to pass your craft to? Pass it to the new capital’s projects. Pass it to employers who don’t conscript you without pay. My father worked for the temple twenty-two years. When he died, he didn’t even have a proper headstone. The temple said—’A mason carves his own stone.’ Fine. I’ll carve my own. These hands can carve a headstone out of any rock.”

The old mason who’d set down his limestone block rose from the other side. The tall, gaunt one. ”You only know the temple made you work for free—but two years ago, when the quarry collapsed, who gave out the wound-salve? Who gave out the compensation grain? Without the temple, if you broke your leg, you’d lie at home waiting to die! You say your craft is your own—what about that safety net?”

The young mason didn’t step back. ”Compensation grain was three sacks of coarse barley. That covers three months of lying in bed? My senior apprentice-brother crushed his hand. The temple gave him half a sack and threw him out. The rest of us apprentices pooled our wages to feed him. The temple’s safety net only catches the obedient. It doesn’t catch the working.”

The old mason slammed his palm on the table. ”You young ones only see the temple collecting rent—you never saw the year the flood came, who opened the granaries and gave out grain? Even if the grain was paid for by our own tribute—that one sack, in a famine, was a life!”

The young mason fired back: ”The grain they gave out was the grain we paid in! The temple’s kindness was only for obedient dogs—never for the men who do the work!”

A middle-aged mason in his forties spoke up, saying both sides had a point. He had elders to support and children to feed—he feared that without steady work his family would starve. But he also hated being dragged off unpaid every planting season while his own fields went fallow. ”I just want to know: will there be work? Will I get paid on time? Gods or no gods—I don’t care about that part.”

At the far edge of the shed, a fourteen-year-old apprentice said quietly: ”I don’t care which god anyone worships. I just want to learn the trade properly, become a real mason, earn money to cure my mother. My master says temple work is the best training. Now the temple’s closed—who do I learn from?”

The debate had no winner. Every man’s position was bound to his own survival. At last, the old mason didn’t counter further. He lowered his head for a long moment. Then he did something no one expected: he laid both hands on the table, palms up, fingers naturally splayed—every joint deformed, every distortion a year of labor, forty years of stone-dust and mallet-grip written into the bone. He stared at his own hands as if seeing them for the first time.

”You say my hands are my own.” He repeated the young mason’s words, and his voice had dropped by half. ”I’ve never thought about it. Forty years. I always thought these hands belonged to the temple.”

The shed went quiet. Kamon seized the silence. He stepped to the table and pushed the standard chisel into the center, where every mason could see it. Then he said two things. First: from today, regardless of whether any temple opened or closed, every mason on the West Bank would work for one wage standard—fair rates, the same for new hands and old. Second: in a few days, civil affairs officials from Thebes would arrive to conduct a field survey of craftsman labor conditions. Every mason should prepare their own records—actual hours worked over the past three years, unpaid corvée days, freely contracted workdays. He didn’t urge the old masons to go to the new capital, and he didn’t urge the young ones to stay. What he gave both sides was the same anchor: your own work-hour data.

As the meeting broke, Seb and Hapy moved immediately. They led a group of apprentices into the quarry yard and began staking out three zones—rough stone, finished stone, waste stone—and erecting half-height palm-fiber shelters over each. Hapy marked each zone with a wooden tally board, using charcoal to note the stone grades; Seb began the daily intake ledger, recording every batch of stone moved, every man-hours logged. They’d also laid out plans for a guild training shed—a long table at one end for demonstrations, with a lime-stone surface for recording work data, each apprentice’s trade, hours, and output, to be consolidated later for the Theban survey team’s reference.

For a long moment after the meeting, no one spoke. The old mason who’d laid his hands on the table didn’t leave immediately.

He walked slowly to the test wall at the edge of the granary compound—the experimental section where Lu Zhu had built three structural types side by side. He stood before it for a long moment. Then he reached out and ran his hand over the mud-brick-over-stone-core profile, his fingertips pressing along the layered joints. He felt the stone cores beneath the clay, traced the staggered overlap of the masonry, and tested the give of the mortar with his thumb. He was not speaking. He was learning the wall with his hands. The silence stretched. Then, finally, he nodded once—a small, almost imperceptible motion—and turned away.

Later that evening, when the yard had emptied, he returned alone. He picked up the standard chisel Kamon had left on the table. His thumb ran along the blade—the edge was wider and flatter than the temple ceremonial chisel, the shape you used for civilian stonework. He’d used one like this when he was young, secretly repairing houses in his village. After the temple took him on as a full-time craftsman, he’d never touched one again. He turned it over slowly, studied its edge, and set it back down on the palm-wood tool rack beside Kamon’s chisel. He didn’t say ”I’m joining.” But he didn’t say ”there’s no craft without the temple” again. He just gathered his tool sack and went home.

The young masons who stayed clustered around Lu Zhu at the test wall. He crouched and walked them through the sand-mortar ratio: ”Nile silt, fine-sieved. Mix it with calcined limestone powder and crushed shell-ash. Ratio: three to one to one. Moisture resistance is thirty percent better than pure mud-mortar. Mud bricks need to dry in direct sun for twelve days, turned three times. Stone cores are laid in staggered overlap—every two courses offset by half a block. The impact force disperses along the stone seams down to the foundation.”

He demonstrated impact tests on all three sections: pure ashlar, pure mud-brick, and the composite wall. He struck each with a stone hammer at graduated force levels, showing the crack propagation patterns. Pure ashlar: cracks ran vertical, entire blocks prone to spalling, material cost forty percent higher and construction time twice as long. Composite wall: cracks arrested by the stone cores, force dispersed to the wall base, material cost thirty percent lower and impact resistance nearly twenty percent higher—suitable for housing, granaries, and defensive perimeter walls. The young masons swarmed the test wall, running their hands over the stone cores, tapping with the sides of their hammers.

Two apprentices fought over the last charcoal stub, shoving each other and laughing about who drew the straighter line. The water-carrier woman came by with a jug of barley tea, chuckling: ”You two spend more time measuring your drawings than you do measuring stone.” A young mason tucked his sketch into his tunic and told the others: ”If the temple had shown me diagrams like this ten years ago, I’d have paid my own way to the new capital.” An older young mason pointed at the crooked drawing: ”Your lines are crooked. When you get to the new capital, don’t touch anyone’s wall until you can draw straight.” The younger one didn’t argue—he just pulled the sketch back out, crouched in the dirt, and redrew the crooked lines until they were straight.

As they crowded against the test wall demonstrating techniques to each other, Lu Zhu mentioned in passing that this structure was also suitable for border fortifications. If General Horemheb needed to expand his forts in the future, these test data could directly serve as material-safety-margin reference. A young mason looked up: ”What’s the difference between a border wall and a city wall?” Lu Zhu crouched and drew another cross-section in the dirt: ”A border wall needs to withstand cavalry impact—the base must be wider, the stone core thicker by thirty percent. But the core principle is the same, just the dimensions differ.” The young mason added a note in the margin of his sketch: ”base width +30%.”

Outside, at the edge of the drying yard, several old masons who’d left the meeting hadn’t actually gone home. They were pretending to rest, but watching everything, ears pricked high. One old mason crouched by the drying-yard edge, smoking his short pipe. The ash fell three times without him noticing. His eyes never left the test wall.

After the meeting, Kamon stayed. He and Lu Zhu leaned against the drying-yard railing and talked about the guild. Kamon said: he was fourteen when the conscription clerks dragged him out of his own field. His father had tried to intervene—a guard had struck him across the leg with a wooden staff. Kamon had spent six months laboring on a temple construction site. When he came home, half the family’s fields had gone fallow, and his father had never walked without a limp again. The thought had buried itself somewhere deep in his chest: a mason should not be hauled away like livestock.

The guild he wanted to build wasn’t about fighting the authorities. It was about setting rules. Unified wages. No unpaid conscription. If a craftsman was injured, the guild would pay for his care. Apprentices would have standardized completion standards. Whoever came to hire—they’d follow the rules.

Lu Zhu suggested: start with the hourly-work ledger—register every mason’s trade, years of experience, and daily wage. With a unified baseline, wage negotiations would have a foundation. Start with West Bank civilian housing projects as test cases. Build a reputation. Later, when the new capital put out bids, the guild could negotiate as a single entity. Kamon added: apprentice training model—any young apprentice wanting to enter the guild must have a designated master. No one gets left to fend for themselves. Lu Zhu added one more: craftsman skill registry—each man’s specialties noted in detail: fine-carving, rough-stone, wall-laying, leveling—so future projects could match the right hands to the right work immediately.

Kamon dragged a discarded limestone scrap to his knee, pulled charcoal from his tool pouch, and wrote five rules. He studied his crooked handwriting when he finished. Then he wiped it clean with his sleeve and rewrote it—three times, each iteration spacing the characters wider, strokes steadier. Finally he propped the scrap slab against the base of the courtyard wall and stared at those five lines for a moment. He didn’t say ”I’ve decided when to formally found the guild.” He just crouched there in the faint glow of the oil lamp, grinding line after line—wage rates, hourly-work standards, craft specifications, apprenticeship rules—into the grey stone surface with the same charcoal pressure that half a lifetime of chiseling stone had trained into his hand.

That night, Lu Zhu sat alone beside the campfire in the granary’s back courtyard. He reviewed both sides of the day’s debate and the young masons’ test-wall results. He wrote three lines on palm-paper: Masonry standardization. Test-wall expansion. Mason guild founding memo. He circled the apprenticeship model item twice, then wrote three names beside it: Seb. Hapy. Kes.

In his previous life, when he’d pushed for engineering standardization, he’d seen the same wary expressions on old workers’ faces—the exact look the old masons had worn today. Technological progress always carried its own kind of pain. He’d originally meant only to leverage the new capital’s projects to accumulate resources, to find his way back home. Instead, without quite noticing when it had happened, he was now driving craftsmanship reform in this land—even institutional change.

He set the charcoal down and looked up. On the drying yard’s palm-wood tool rack, there was now one more chisel—the old mason’s. He didn’t know when the old man had placed it there. It rested beside Kamon’s standard chisel, old and new side by side. The rack held a neat row of chisels, differing in wear, like a line of silent pledges. The campfire crackled quietly. In the distance, the quarry lay still. The West Bank night was the same as always. But some things had already begun to change.

That same night, the low-ranking priest who’d been driven from the West Bank shrine didn’t return to Thebes. He split his efforts: one contact approached the quarry foreman’s house, offering premium rates for private work in exchange for blocking the guild registration; another approached the hauling crew foreman with a sack of grain and the same message. In the deepest hut on the quarry slope, the foreman’s pipe tobacco still glowed in the dark. Before him stood the white-robed priest.

”Lord Nekhem says you don’t have to agree to anything. Just start tomorrow. You and your men, whenever you hear anyone mention the guild, say this: ’Follow Kamon, and the temple will remember your name.’ That sack is only a greeting.”

The foreman didn’t reach for the sack. He didn’t say yes either. The red eye of his pipe flared once in the dark, like a small and careful eye, just now opening.

The night deepened. On the drying-yard rack, old and new chisels stood side by side. The limestone slab with the guild’s five rules glowed faintly in the campfire light. In the quarry hut’s shadows, a sack of grain sat untouched on the floor. Two currents, pulling in opposite directions, faced each other across the same West Bank night.
