Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 1: Chapter 1: Landing on the Nile — Three Men, One Granary, and a Mountain of Rotting Grain

Lu Zhu woke to heat.

Not the lazy, air-conditioner-broke kind of heat. This was the kind that dried out your nasal passages until they stung, pulled your skin tight across your bones, and made every breath feel like swallowing sand. He opened his eyes to a ceiling of yellow-brown mud brick, rough textures half-visible in the gloom. The air carried a blend of dust, dried straw, and a faint trace of some unfamiliar spice.

He tried to remember. Steel scaffolding collapsing. Hard hat flying off. Darkness. Then a pale hospital room — doctors shouting something about voltage. A defibrillator. A jolt. Pain. Black.

Now he lay in a mud-brick room under a coarse linen blanket. The body beneath it was about thirty years old, lean and wiry, with the soft honey-tan complexion of a man who’d spent years in temple courtyards and on riverbanks — not the hardened tan of a laborer, but the sheltered, almost scholarly look of a low-ranking priest. The skin on his palms was too smooth.

Something was wrong.

Lu Zhu sat up so fast he nearly cracked his skull on a low roof beam. He stared at his hands. These weren’t his hands. They didn’t have the calluses from fifteen years of hauling construction materials. No scar on the index finger from a box cutter. He touched his face — jawline at least a decade younger, clean-shaven where there should have been stubble.

”...What the hell.”

Even his voice was wrong. Lower. An accent he couldn’t place.

He swung his legs off the bed. His bare feet hit the floor — real packed earth, not concrete, with worn stone slabs at the edges. He stumbled to a woven-reed door and shoved it open. Sunlight knifed through.

The Nile.

A river so wide it stole his breath stretched before him, blue and blinding. Along both banks unfurled a narrow ribbon of green — date palms, barley fields, reed thickets — and beyond that green, an endless expanse of ochre desert. Wooden boats by the dozens glided downstream under square white sails. In the distance, the silhouette of a massive stone structure crouched against the horizon like some ancient beast at rest.

This wasn’t any modern city he’d ever seen.

It wasn’t any landscape from any photograph he’d ever looked at.

”Lord Imhotep! You’re awake!”

The boy who ran up from the riverbank was about thirteen or fourteen, wiry and dark, with close-cropped hair and calves crisscrossed with small scars from years of running errands barefoot. His coarse linen kilt was spattered with river mud. He carried a clay jar, and his expression was a complicated blend of sympathy and impatience — the look of someone tending to a distant relative they didn’t particularly care for.

”You collapsed by the river yesterday. Heatstroke, the healer said. You need to rest.” The boy shoved the jar into Lu Zhu’s hands. ”But the granary’s in chaos again. The scribe — he’s been looking everywhere for you. Says if you don’t show up, this year’s grain tax is going to rot, and when the investigation comes down, don’t let it fall on us little workers.”

Lu Zhu held the jar. His mind churned.

Imhotep. That was the name of the body he’d landed in. Heatstroke yesterday. Weak constitution, minor functionary — not a nobody, the boy called him ”Lord,” and someone wanted him for official business — but clearly not anyone important.

He took a sip from the jar. Lukewarm Nile water. A faint mineral sweetness with a hint of silt. Not unpleasant, but far from refreshing.

”Where’s the granary?” He set the jar down. His voice was steadier now.

The boy blinked — probably wondering if the heatstroke had cooked the priest’s brain — then pointed toward a cluster of mud-brick buildings squatting further down the riverbank.

”Where else? Those huts by the river. Lord Asaf’s been out there cursing all morning.”

---

It took Lu Zhu about a quarter-hour to reach the granary complex. He kept his pace deliberate, absorbing everything around him.

The road underfoot was packed earth, bleached pale by the midday sun and kicking up fine dust with every step. Low mud-brick houses lined both sides, their walls marked by a horizontal water stain at waist height — last year’s Nile flood, frozen in drying mud. As he drew closer to the river, the street thickened with commerce.

A fish vendor squatted beside a palm-frond mat piled with Nile perch and tilapia, the gills still faintly twitching. He was lean and weathered, flicking at flies with a reed stalk. Every time someone walked past, he hoisted a silver fish overhead and hollered something in a dialect Lu Zhu couldn’t parse.

Across from him, a date shop no wider than three paces across. An ancient woman with a face like crumpled papyrus presided over stacks of pressed date bricks — the fruit pounded into blocks for storage, gleaming dark amber in the sun. A half-naked boy crouched beside her, sorting through the rejects. Every worm-eaten date he found went straight into his mouth.

Lu Zhu slowed. Ten paces north of the date shop, a young woman knelt in her doorway turning a basalt hand-quern. The upper stone ground back and forth with a gritty, rhythmic shushing. Yellow-brown barley flour sifted from the mill’s edge onto a piece of coarse linen spread beneath. Her toddler lay sprawled at her feet, clutching a lump of raw dough like a toy.

A donkey cart squeezed through, piled with half a load of barley sheaves. Its driver was an old farmer, shirtless, a blackened linen cloth draped over one shoulder, shouting at the donkey — a grey, long-eared creature barely larger than a dog. The donkey flicked its ears at every shout and inched forward with theatrical reluctance.

The smells shifted and layered: scorched palm oil drifting from a workshop, toasted barley from a distant bakery, the wet-mud sweetness of the reed-choked riverbanks, the dry dung-dust kicked up by the cart. It all tangled together into a composite scent Lu Zhu had never encountered in any modern sensory experience — not refined, but fiercely alive.

He noticed the way cloth marked class. The mill-woman and the cart driver wore raw, undressed linen — rough fibers, brownish-grey, edges left raw and fraying. The fish vendor and the date-seller had lightly washed linen in pale tan — presentable but basic. The occasional mounted scribe or petty official who trotted past wore bleached white linen kilts that gleamed in the sun. People with status.

Lu Zhu looked down at his own robe. Fine linen. White. Good drape. Clean edges. Priest class. He filed that away.

A street vendor crumbling a coarse flatbread into his mouth glanced up as Lu Zhu passed and instinctively angled his body away — not fear, exactly. Just the ingrained deference of the common folk, toward anyone wearing temple white.

The granary complex was larger than Lu Zhu expected, and far more decrepit.

Seven rectangular mud-brick buildings lined the riverbank, each about twenty paces long and ten wide. The outer walls were shedding their mud plaster in sheets, exposing dry, cracked brickwork beneath. Roofs of palm-log beams under thick reed thatch, topped with another layer of mud. From a distance, the buildings looked like seven crooked old men huddled by the river, waiting to collapse.

”Open them all!”

The man shouting was Asaf — early thirties, lean, his face tanned to a leathery brown from years of trudging through rural districts. Close-cropped hair, sharp, restless eyes, and a bleached linen kilt that was conspicuously clean. A leather belt at his waist held a wooden tally-board. He was directing a crew of laborers trying to pry open a granary door.

”Lord Asaf — this is the third door today. The barley inside is completely moldy. Grey-green blotches all the way up the grain heads!” An old laborer backed out of the doorway. His face was a topographical map of wrinkles, sunken cheekbones, grey hair knotted carelessly behind his head. His rough palms were crusted with calluses and tiny cracks. He cradled a handful of grey-brown barley spikes with the expression of a man who’d seen plenty of disasters already and had no capacity left for surprise.

Asaf took the barley, sniffed it, and his face drained to iron.

”Four thousand hekats.” His voice came through clenched teeth. ”This one storehouse alone — four thousand. Multiply by seven — do any of you grasp what this means?”

No one answered. Laborers stared at the ground. The old man rubbed at the barley in his hand; grains pattered into the dust.

”It means half this year’s grain tax to the royal house is rotting inside these walls.” Asaf hurled the barley to the ground. ”When the inspectors come, my head rolls first. None of you are safe.”

”My lord,” the old laborer ventured carefully, ”the storehouses were built under the temple’s supervision. They chose this site — a depression right beside the river. Every flood season, the groundwater rises under the foundation. Grain on the lowest layers doesn’t stand a chance—”

”I know!” Asaf cut him off. ”Ten years ago when they built these, I wasn’t posted here. But I’m the one in charge now. I’m the one who answers for it. Open the rest of the doors. I want to see how much is lost.”

”Opening them all will only make it worse.”

The voice came from outside the crowd. Every head turned. A young man in a linen robe was crouched by the storehouse’s outer wall, probing at the cracks in the mud brick with his fingers.

Lu Zhu straightened, brushing mud dust from his hands. The hem of his robe had already soaked up a brown water stain, which told him what he’d already felt — the wall’s base was wet.

”You’re—” Asaf’s frown deepened, then broke into recognition. ”Imhotep! Where have you been all morning? I’ve had people looking everywhere for you!”

”Heatstroke. Collapsed.” Lu Zhu’s fingers were still tracing the brick joints. ”Just woke up.”

”Heatstroke?” Asaf strode over, his agitation carrying a new edge of suspicion. ”And now you’re crouching here picking at the wall like some kind of mason? You’re not a builder.”

Lu Zhu didn’t answer directly. He straightened, stepped back, and studied the building in front of him.

He’d seen this structure before. More precisely, he’d seen its blueprints.

In his last life, a client had wanted to convert a riverside granary from the late Qing dynasty into a cultural district. Lu Zhu had led the site survey. That old grain depot had used the exact same logic: thick rammed-earth walls, narrow windows, poor ventilation, foundation perpetually damp from groundwater capillary action. Bottom-layer grain ruined by moisture and mold.

His solution then: raise the floor on a ventilated moisture barrier, retrofit high windows for convection, install an external cutoff drain.

This ancient Egyptian storehouse — cruder materials, smaller scale — had the identical problem.

”Lord Asaf.” Lu Zhu turned. ”I see three issues.”

Asaf blinked. The quiet little priest never talked like this. ”...What?”

”First. Foundation.” Lu Zhu pointed at the brown water stain at the wall’s base. ”These storehouses sit below the Nile’s maximum flood level. Groundwater rises through the soil by capillary action. You pile grain directly on the earth, the bottom layers absorb moisture year-round. Mold is inevitable.”

He walked to the doorway and ran his finger along the brick joint. ”Second. Ventilation. The entire building has only two ventilation gaps at the gable peak — palm-sized, and positioned too low. Hot air rises with nowhere to escape. The interior becomes an oven. Mold in warm, moist conditions doubles its growth rate. The musty smell you’re getting isn’t surface-level. The grain stacks are rotting from the inside out.”

”Third — everyone wants to throw the doors wide open. But the outdoor humidity right now is higher than the interior. You let wet air flood in, tomorrow the mold spreads faster.”

Asaf’s mouth hung open. He had no response.

The old laborer got there first. His cloudy eyes sparked. ”The Lord’s right! I’ve been saying for years — after the flood, opening the doors just makes the mold worse. Never knew why until now.”

”You—” Asaf finally found his voice, scanning Lu Zhu up and down like he was seeing him for the first time. ”Where did you learn any of this?”

Lu Zhu reached for the first excuse that came: ”Temple archives. Old Kingdom texts on granary construction. They used to build on high ground. At some point someone moved the designs to the riverbank. I read about it.”

Complete fabrication. But Asaf had no way to verify it. He was a conscription clerk, not an archaeologist.

”Fine. You have a point.” Asaf’s tone shifted — the bark softening into something almost wary. ”So what do we do? The grain’s already rotting. I can’t un-rot it.”

”What’s already spoiled can’t be saved. But what hasn’t gone bad yet — that can.” Lu Zhu stepped into the granary doorway. The light dropped. A thick mold-stench hit him. He squinted into the dim interior: mountains of barley sheaves, most loose-piled on the ground, some in woven reed baskets, a few stacks partitioned under rush mats.

He crouched and examined the piles, rubbing individual grain heads between his fingers.

”The bottom-layer sheaves — anything touching the earth directly — probably already moldy. But the upper layers and anything against the less-damp walls might still be salvageable.” He straightened, dusting off his hands. ”Step one: sort through every storehouse. Pull out the dry, unmoldy sheaves. Spread them somewhere with sun and airflow to air out. Step two: clear out the rotted bottom layers entirely — don’t leave them, mold spreads.”

He paused, the next phase assembling in his head. ”Step three: the buildings themselves need three fixes. One — raise the floor half a cubit. Lay a moisture break of coarse sand and crushed stone beneath. Two — dig a cutoff trench along the exterior wall base to redirect groundwater away from the foundation. Three — add shark-gill vents at the roofline so hot, wet air can rise and escape.”

The old laborer caught maybe half of it. But Asaf’s eyes had already lit up. He wasn’t a builder, but he could tell — this man wasn’t bluffing. He had a real plan.

”Labor. Materials. Timeline.” Asaf dropped his voice to a negotiating pitch. ”You pull this off, I make sure you’re rewarded.”

Lu Zhu looked at him and registered something important.

”My lord, I’m not the granary overseer.”

”You’re not now.” Asaf’s smile took on the particular cunning of a mid-level bureaucrat. ”But if I report the granary renovation as your achievement — you’ll get promoted at least one rank. You’d never have to sleep in that riverside hovel again.”

Lu Zhu was silent for a moment.

Truthfully, he didn’t care about promotion. What he cared about was: was there any way back? If there was, what did it require? If there wasn’t —

He still needed to survive.

And survival required resources. Supplies. Connections. This granary crisis, right now, could deliver all three simultaneously.

”Fine,” Lu Zhu said. ”But one condition. The labor needs to be professional — experienced masons and bricklayers, not conscripted farmers. Farmers do rough work. Rough work means repairs that fail next season. Failed repairs mean your head rolls after all.”

Asaf was about to reply when a gravelly voice erupted from the far end of the compound.

”Professional masons? Can you even pay for them?!”

---

The man who stormed in was past fifty, built like a wall. Broad shoulders, thick arms, muscles still visible even through a ragged linen tunic. His face was a dark, sun-beaten hide crosshatched with decades of glare and dust. A grizzled beard tangled across his jaw. His hands were the giveaway — palms and fingers armored in calluses, stone grit embedded so deep in the skin it looked like part of the grain. His coarse tunic was worn through in several places.

He kicked an empty reed basket, which went tumbling with a hollow clatter.

”Kamon.” Asaf’s eyebrows knotted. ”What do you want?”

”What do I want?” Kamon’s voice could have stripped plaster. ”Three months, my lord. Three months my crew of seventeen masons has been patching and re-patching this granary of yours. Not one grain of barley in payment. This morning one of my apprentices collapsed from hunger on the worksite. My wife gave his family our last half-sack of barley. I have five mouths to feed tonight. You want me to tell them dinner is mud?”

Lu Zhu watched Asaf’s face cycle through the expression of a vendor whose stall had just been overturned.

”Kamon, it’s not that I don’t want to pay—” Asaf moved closer, voice lowered, but Kamon stepped back and raised his volume.

”Don’t tell me the royal grain disbursement hasn’t come through. Whether it has or hasn’t is between you and your superiors. What’s between me and you is thirteen masons and three months of wages. You told me to rush the job — we worked through the nights, dulled two iron chisels — and now you tell me there’s no money?”

Asaf’s complexion had moved beyond embarrassment into some new territory. He glanced at the laborers, then at Lu Zhu, who stood with his arms crossed, watching. Then he gritted his teeth. ”The linen-flax tax comes in next tenday. You’ll be the first paid.”

”You said that last time.” Kamon’s anger had faded into something more exhausted — the resignation of a man who’d been lied to too many times. He waved a hand. ”Forget it. I’m pulling my crew today. But mark my words — if I don’t see grain within three days, I’m done with this granary for good. Go ahead and draft farmers to finish the work. They’ll patch it the way farmers patch things. Next year it’ll leak again. Next year it’ll mold again. And the head that rolls won’t be mine.”

Lu Zhu had been watching the old mason in silence.

The way Kamon spoke, the way he argued — this wasn’t just a brute who moved stones. He ran a crew. He understood contracts. He negotiated — even if his negotiating style was to kick baskets and shout. More importantly, he understood quality. That line — ”draft farmers and it’ll leak again” — meant he knew exactly what his own value was.

This man was the first technically useful person Lu Zhu had encountered in this world.

”Master Kamon.” Lu Zhu’s voice was even, unthreatened. ”How much work to raise the floor of one storehouse by half a cubit?”

Kamon turned. He seemed to notice the young priest for the first time. His eyes — the eyes of a man who’d spent three decades assessing stone — swept over Lu Zhu with the particular skepticism a veteran craftsman reserves for someone who might waste his time.

”Who’s asking?”

”Imhotep.” Lu Zhu said. ”The rot in those storehouses — I’m the one who just told Lord Asaf how to handle it.”

Kamon’s gaze flickered. He’d been outside yelling about wages, but he’d caught fragments of someone inside talking about foundations. Ventilation. He hadn’t paid close attention. But the fact that Asaf — that irritable bureaucrat — had actually stood there and listened to this man... that was unusual.

”Half a cubit.” Kamon’s voice was still hard, but the professional gear had engaged. ”One storehouse, twenty paces by ten. Just the earthwork and tamping — five days. Add crushed stone, dry coarse sand, re-plastering the surface — for all seven storehouses, I’d say forty days. Assuming I have enough hands. And enough materials.”

”Assuming hands aren’t the bottleneck.” Lu Zhu pressed. ”Can you clear and repair simultaneously? Empty one storehouse of its moldy grain, renovate it immediately, move the good grain back in. Cycle through all seven. How fast then?”

Kamon was quiet. His calloused hand drifted automatically toward the tool pouch at his waist — the gesture of an old foreman who reached for his chalk and measure whenever an interesting technical problem presented itself. Lu Zhu recognized that tic from a hundred job site foremen in his previous life.

”Cycling... thirty days.” Kamon said. ”And the wages don’t go down.”

”Wages are between you and him.” Asaf jumped in, clearly sensing opportunity. ”Kamon, if you’ll just keep working—”

”Clear the back debt first.” Kamon cut him off, but his voice had lost the edge. He turned to Lu Zhu. ”This layering you mentioned — crushed stone and sand. What’s the ratio?”

Lu Zhu felt a small click of recognition.

Kamon hadn’t asked ”why add stone and sand.” He’d jumped straight to the ratio. That meant he understood the concept of a moisture barrier already — he’d likely seen drainage problems before, just never seen a systematic fix.

”Three finger-widths of crushed stone, tamped. On top of that, two finger-widths of coarse river sand, leveled.” Lu Zhu crouched and scratched a quick diagram in the dirt. ”The key isn’t thickness — it’s the difference in particle size between the two layers. Crushed stone creates air voids that break the capillary rise of groundwater. The sand fills those voids just enough to level the surface but doesn’t absorb water itself. Two layers together, and the capillary action is severed.”

Kamon crouched beside him. His grey-white brows pulled together as he studied the crude sketch.

”Crushed stone comes from the west-bank quarry. They’ve got basalt tailings — good hardness. River sand you can sieve straight from the Nile shallows. Fine-mesh palm-fiber screen, double-pass to filter out the silt.”

”The coarse sand needs a freshwater wash after sieving.” Lu Zhu added. ”River sand’s alkaline. If you don’t wash it, you’ll get salt efflorescence later. It’ll eat the grain.”

Kamon fell quiet again. Longer this time. Asaf fidgeted, convinced another fight was about to break out.

Then Kamon made a sound Lu Zhu hadn’t heard from him yet. A very small laugh.

He slapped the dirt off his knees and rose. His weathered face held an expression Lu Zhu couldn’t quite read.

”Lord Imhotep,” he said. ”You’re a white-robed priest, but what you just said — I’ve been a mason thirty years, and it’s finer than anything I’d have thought of. You ever work construction?”

”Read it in books.” Lu Zhu delivered his second lie of the day without blinking.

Kamon clearly didn’t believe him. But he didn’t push. In ancient Egypt, knowledge was the most rigid of class boundaries. Whether a priest learned it from a scroll or somewhere else was irrelevant to a mason. What mattered was that the man knew his craft and his solution held water.

”Thirty days. Seven storehouses.” Kamon extended his hand. Five thick fingers. ”Five sacks of barley. Paid now. Not promises. That’s the restart cost. The rest paid in installments as the work progresses.”

Asaf opened his mouth to negotiate. A voice from the compound gate cut him off.

”I’ll give you ten.”

All three men turned. The man standing in the sun was dark-skinned, late thirties, lean but solid-boned. He wore a deep-blue linen tunic belted at the waist, and his face carried the easy composure of a man who’d negotiated deals in a dozen market towns. The two Nubian attendants behind him — tall, silent, muscled — each carried a heavy coil of palm-fiber rope. These were people who worked with cargo.

”Meru.” Kamon’s voice softened — not deferential, but no longer combative. ”Good timing—”

”My timing is that twenty thousand hekats of my barley has been sitting in your crumbling storehouse for nearly a month.” Meru strode forward. His Egyptian had a Nubian cadence, but his words were fast and precise. ”I just got back from a run to Memphis. I was planning to load out today. Instead, the granary clerk tells me there’s a mold outbreak and all stored grain is locked down.”

He stopped in front of Lu Zhu, a full two steps inside normal conversational distance — probably a negotiation habit, a pressuring tactic. Lu Zhu didn’t move.

”You’re the priest who said don’t open the doors?” Meru’s eyes pinned him.

”Yes.”

”You realize my twenty thousand hekats of barley have been sitting in that storehouse for weeks? Every extra day they’re sealed in there, I lose another ten percent to spoilage. You want me to keep the doors shut — you planning to pay for my losses?”

Lu Zhu met his stare without blinking. ”You open those doors right now, the afternoon humidity floods in. For every degree the temperature rises and every fraction the humidity climbs, the mold doubles its spread rate. Your twenty thousand hekats — you’ve probably lost less than ten percent at this point. Throw the doors wide open today, by tomorrow morning you’ve lost thirty. You want to open them, I won’t stop you.”

Meru’s brow twitched. He glanced at Asaf, who immediately found something fascinating to study on the ground. He looked at Kamon, who spread his hands. ”Don’t look at me. I don’t follow half of what he says. But the man knows his trade. I’ve been on job sites thirty years and he just told me things I’ve never thought about.”

Meru was silent for a beat. When he turned back to Lu Zhu, his tone had shifted.

”Tell me what to do.”

It wasn’t a question. It was an acknowledgment. You know your field. I’ll follow your lead.

”Which storehouse has your barley?” Lu Zhu asked.

”The westernmost one.”

”Haven’t been in that one yet.” Lu Zhu started walking. ”Show me.”

---

The westernmost storehouse was the same layout as the others, but with one crucial difference: its floor sat about three finger-widths higher than the rest. And Meru’s cargo wasn’t loose-piled. It was packed in woven reed baskets with gaps left between them. Reed mats lined the floor.

Lu Zhu didn’t check the barley first. He crouched and felt the dirt beneath the reed mats. Dry. He stood, scanned the ceiling, and found a hairline crack in the roof — sunlight leaking through in a fine golden thread.

”You got lucky.” He pointed at the crack. ”That gap — don’t patch it. It’s giving you accidental ventilation. Hot air rises through it. Your barley is dry because of a construction flaw. The other six storehouses are sealed tight. All the humidity stayed trapped.”

Meru caught the critical point. ”So my cargo is still good?”

”Salvageable. But you need to do something for me.” Lu Zhu said. ”How much barley do you have for sale total?”

”Twenty thousand here. Another forty thousand still in transit from downriver. Sixty thousand total.” Meru paused. ”This year’s plan was to establish the Nubia-to-Memphis grain transport route.”

”Forget the route for now.” Lu Zhu said. ”Take your men and hit every flatbread stall and brewery in town. Tell them: the state granary has a special lot of barley, on sale today and tomorrow, twenty percent below market. First come, first served. Sell off as much as you can.”

Meru’s eyes narrowed. ”Dumping at a loss. Who covers my margin—”

”Your margin you take up with him.” Lu Zhu pointed at Asaf. ”This is his tax grain. But here’s the thing — you can use speed. Sell fast, and suddenly he’s holding copper ingots and silver instead of rotting grain. Metal doesn’t mold.”

Meru went quiet. Then he looked at Asaf, and his eyes took on the particular gleam of a merchant who’d just spotted an angle.

”If this plan actually works,” he said slowly, ”I could treat the bulk sale as procurement — buy the grain from you at twenty percent below market, but I need an official stamped receipt. Proof this grain came from the state granary, not my private hoard.”

Asaf clenched his jaw, calculating. ”...Fine. But you log every transaction.”

”Naturally.” Meru nodded. ”That’s just good business.”

Lu Zhu watched the two men reach their tentative understanding. Getting the stale grain out of the granaries fast was critical — every day it sat, the rot spread. And Meru’s existing trade network was the fastest distribution channel available. Zero upfront cost to Lu Zhu, and both men now owed him.

”Now. About those wages.” Kamon cleared his throat loudly. ”Ten sacks. You said ten sacks.”

Meru faced him. ”Ten — but not all from the granary. You and your crew help me clear out the westernmost storehouse first. I’ll front you five sacks myself. The other five come from Lord Asaf after all seven storehouses are finished.”

”Done.” Kamon accepted immediately, then frowned. ”But prepayment aside, my crew’s lunch today is still an open question. Thirteen masons and the granary laborers. Nobody’s eaten.”

”I’ll handle that.”

It was Lu Zhu who spoke.

All three heads swiveled toward him. The expressions ranged across Kamon’s scrutiny, Meru’s curiosity, and Asaf’s — honestly, Asaf looked like a drowning man who’d just spotted floating timber.

”Say that again?” Kamon said.

”Midday meal. I’ll sort it out.” Lu Zhu was already walking toward the back of the compound. ”Call your crew. Plus the granary hands — about thirty people total. How much barley flour do you have?”

The old laborer answered. ”Last month’s milling — about half a sack left. Enough for twenty flatbreads, maybe.”

”Not enough.” Lu Zhu calculated. ”Dates. Spare sheep fat. You have any?”

”Fat? Yes. What we save for the clerk’s private kitchen.”

”Bring it out.”

The old man glanced at Asaf, who gave a short nod. He ran off.

---

What happened over the next hour, on the open ground outside the granary compound, was Lu Zhu’s first real field operation since his arrival in ancient Egypt.

He took the barley flour, mixed it with water into dough, then worked crushed dates into the flour. This formula came from a food documentary he’d seen in his former life. Ancient Egyptian barley was low in gluten — baked straight, it came out hard as stone. But dates’ natural sugars and moisture softened the crumb. The resulting flatbread would be pliable, almost tender.

But he did more.

He sent Kamon to the worksite to fetch a flat slab of bluestone. Onto its surface he smeared a thin layer of rendered sheep fat. The fat hit the heated stone with an explosive sizzle and a plume of savory, rich smoke. Lu Zhu did this alone, because the laborers watching him smear fat onto a cooking stone were wearing expressions that ranged from disbelief to actual distress.

”My lord — sheep fat is expensive.” The old laborer’s face twitched with every sizzle. ”Nobody greases the stone. You just put the dough straight on.”

”The way you do it, the flatbread comes out like rock.” Lu Zhu didn’t look up. He laid a rolled-out round of dough onto the hot stone. ”That’s fine if you’ve got good teeth. But hungry masons need something softer.”

The dough hit the stone. Fat and dough made contact with a deeply satisfying hiss. A white curl of smoke rose up, dense with the smell of toasted barley and rendered fat, and it rode the early afternoon breeze across the compound.

Every laborer within scent range swallowed audibly.

The first people drawn in were two refugees sheltering against the granary wall — an old man with a twisted jujube-wood staff and a small boy. The boy was barefoot, tugging the old man’s tattered hem, staring at the sizzling flatbread with his mouth clamped shut and his eyes enormous.

Then a woman walking back from the river with a water jar on her head stopped mid-stride. She tilted her head toward the cooking fire, still balancing the jar. Two more village women arrived behind her — one still holding a half-finished reed fan, the other nursing an infant whose tiny nose was pointed at the smoke like a compass.

Within the time it took to burn one oil lamp’s worth of oil, a loose crowd of a dozen or so had gathered. A passing porter, leading a donkey, stood on his toes to see. A neighboring mill-woman had abandoned her quern, still dusted in flour. Several of Kamon’s masons, crusted in mud and stone grit, had drifted in from the worksite — kept at a respectful distance by the force field of Kamon’s glare, but their throats were bobbing.

Kamon turned and waved at them like he was shooing chickens. ”What are you staring at? Never seen flatbread before?”

”Never seen it cooked in sheep fat,” the old refugee with the jujube staff replied with perfect, earnest seriousness.

Kamon opened his mouth and found he had no counter-argument.

The first flatbread was done. Lu Zhu lifted it — both sides golden, edges faintly puffed, and where the date sugar had lightly caramelized, an amber gloss bloomed across the surface. He tore off a piece and handed it to Kamon.

Kamon put it in his mouth. Chewed once. Twice.

On the third chew, his jaw slowed.

”...Soft.” The word seemed to deflate half the belligerence out of him. What remained was the bewilderment of a lifelong craftsman who’d just been bench-tested by a better technique. ”I’ve eaten barley flatbread for fifty years. Never had one this soft.”

”What does your usual flatbread taste like?” Lu Zhu asked.

Kamon considered the question carefully. ”Rocks.”

The laborers laughed. Meru, thoroughly intrigued, picked up a fresh flatbread and bit in. He immediately turned to one of his attendants and said something in Nubian — the tone unmistakably meant ”remember this.”

”This formula—” Meru wheeled on Lu Zhu, his mercantile instincts fully activated. ”What’s the date-to-flour ratio? How much sheep fat? If I could sell this in the market—”

”Sell what.” Kamon was still chewing. ”The man who just offered ten sacks of barley as a wage advance now wants to turn my crew’s lunch into a business. You merchants change faces faster than the Nile bends.”

”I’m talking about selling it later, not selling the bread in your mouth this minute.” Meru replied, unruffled. ”Besides, those ten sacks are my advance. If you don’t like the deal, give back the flatbread.”

Kamon looked down at the already two-thirds-eaten flatbread in his hand. He took another bite.

”Give it back? I ate it.”

Meru let out a laugh despite himself. ”The finest mason west of Thebes, negotiating like a mule.”

”Don’t talk to me about mules.” Kamon swallowed, pointed at Meru. ”Let’s talk about those ten sacks you promised. Was that the Nubian purchase price or the Memphis market price?”

”Nubian purchase price, obviously. A sack of barley costs half a copper ingot in Nubia. In Memphis it doubles. I’m already taking a loss quoting you the Nubian rate.”

”Bull.” Kamon stuffed the last of his flatbread into his mouth. ”Your twenty thousand hekats came in three months ago. The Nubian drought hadn’t hit yet. Your purchase price was lower than today’s. You think I’ve never done business with a Nubian?”

Meru’s smile tightened a fraction. ”...You’re a mason. When did you start tracking grain prices?”

”I’ve got a junior brother working the temple construction at Memphis. He sends barley home every month — bought from your Nubian merchant guild. Last year a sack was three-tenths of a copper ingot. This year it’s half. You think I can’t do arithmetic?” Kamon folded his arms, deploying the full seasoned haggling energy of a construction foreman. ”Ten sacks at last year’s purchase price. You owe me one extra sack.”

Now it was Meru’s face that flushed — less visible on his dark complexion, but unmistakable. ”That’s not a negotiation. That’s robbery.”

”Learned from you.” Kamon snorted. ”Isn’t that the same move you pull on officials when you negotiate freight charges?”

The water-jar woman let out a laugh, nearly sloshing her jar. She steadied it and whispered something to the mill-woman beside her. The mill-woman clapped a hand over her mouth, shoulders shaking.

Meru shot them a glare. Both women instantly dropped their eyes, pretending deep fascination with the ants on the ground. But their lips stayed curved — clearly not intimidated by a dark-skinned Nubian merchant, no matter how sharp his glare.

”Enough.” Lu Zhu lifted a second flatbread off the stone, his tone the calm of a site supervisor mediating two subcontractors fighting over a materials quote. ”Sheep fat is expensive. Dates are seasonal. Fine for an occasional treat, not worth the cost for daily eating. If you want to sell it, try replacing the dates with fig paste — see if it holds.”

He paused, something occurring to him. He looked up at Meru. ”Actually — you just reminded me of something. Once the storehouses are renovated, the granary needs a standardized mess supply. No matter who runs this place in the future, the cookhouse standard can’t drop. A granary wall is a wall. A worker’s stomach is also a wall. Empty stomach, and no wall in the world gets built.”

Asaf, who’d been listening from the sidelines, abruptly spoke up. ”That could go in my performance review. ’Improved granary mess, raised labor efficiency.’ Add the renovation... I might actually hit my metrics this year.”

”And then promote me?” Lu Zhu said dryly.

”Promote you?” Asaf rolled his eyes. ”Swallow your flatbread first.”

Lu Zhu laughed.

It was the first time he’d laughed in this world. Not relief. Not bitterness. Just the pure, absurd comedy of the situation.

A modern construction designer stranded in ancient Egypt, and he’d used one sheep-fat date flatbread to buy the tentative trust of a bureaucrat, the grudging respect of an old mason, and the commercial interest of a cross-border trader.

Not a bad opening.

A voice in the back of his mind reminded him: this was only step one. The way back — if there was one — remained unknown. But before he could even think about that door, he needed resources. Connections. A foothold. And this granary compound, with its rotting grain and crumbling walls and three unlikely allies, was the first brick in that foundation.

”My lord.”

The old laborer had materialized at Lu Zhu’s elbow, voice dropped to a murmur.

”Riders coming from the south. Amun temple. The lead man’s on a chestnut horse.”

Lu Zhu followed his gaze. In the distance, along the river road, a procession was approaching. First came two temple servants — shaven heads gleaming, white linen kilts, leopard-skin sashes across their shoulders. Palm rods in hand. Their pace was unhurried, deliberate. Behind them, six attendants in matching regalia, two of them swinging copper censers trailing white ribbons of myrrh smoke — a heavy, bitter-sweet scent that cut through the street-smells of roasting bread and fish and donkey dung like a blade.

The effect on the street was immediate.

The fish vendor stopped shouting. He pulled his palm-frond mat back half a cubit and stared intently at his tilapia as though they’d just become deeply fascinating. The mill-woman stilled her quern and ducked her head, hiding her face behind the motion of tucking back her hair. The old donkey driver steered his cart to the roadside and shrank behind the animal — the donkey flicked its ears, the only creature on the street whose posture didn’t change.

Even the idlers who’d gathered around the flatbread stone edged backward half a pace. No one had ordered them to. No one had even looked at them. But the synchronized hush was more compelling than any command.

In the West Bank district of the Eighteenth Dynasty, the Amun temple was not a temple. It was the largest landowner and the oldest judge in the territory. A farmer who rented temple fields surrendered sixty percent of his harvest. A laborer conscripted for temple construction received no wages at all. These were not abuses — they were law. Decreed by Amun, administered by his priests.

The man at the head of the procession rode a tall chestnut horse. He was nearly sixty, ramrod-straight, his skin pale and meticulously maintained — the complexion of a man who never labored under the sun. His face was austerely sharp, a blade worn smooth by decades. His fine white linen robe was pleated at the edges with deep-blue lotus embroidery — the pattern permitted only to senior clergy. At his chest hung a gold Amun amulet: an ostrich feather inlaid with lapis lazuli and carnelian, catching the midday sun in cold, hard glints.

Nekhem. Third Priest of Amun. Overseer of all temple lands west of the Nile.

His gaze swept the granary compound. Not casually — deliberately. The assessing look of a man calculating acreage values.

Lu Zhu recognized that look from another life. Property developers touring distressed assets. The ones who showed up right after the fire, before the ashes were cold.

The chestnut horse halted at the granary gate. Nekhem’s eyes traveled from the mold-stained storehouse walls, to the flatbread stone where the crowd still lingered, to Lu Zhu — still holding a half-cooked round of dough, his fingers dusted in flour and sheep fat, wearing priest’s linen but decidedly not priestly posture. His gaze paused on Lu Zhu for a half-beat too long, a fractional frown crossing his brow, then landed on Asaf, whose face had gone rigid.

His mouth bent. The faintest curve.

Not kindness.

”Scribe Asaf. I heard the granary has encountered some... difficulty.” Nekhem’s voice was not loud, but every syllable landed like a measured grain. ”Those untended fields on the west bank — if your work here falls short, the royal grain tax will only grow harder to collect. Perhaps you might consider transferring those lands to the temple’s stewardship. We could—”

”Thank you for your concern.” Asaf cut him off, voice clipped. ”The granary is under control.”

Nekhem didn’t reply immediately. His eyes rested on Lu Zhu again — on the white robe smeared with flour, on the sheep-fat stone, on the flatbread cooling in the priest’s hand. The image clearly did not compute.

”Good.” Nekhem’s voice was dry. He urged his horse forward.

The procession moved on. But the dust their hooves kicked up hung in the afternoon air for a long time, like a grey-yellow tail refusing to settle.

Lu Zhu watched the retreating silhouette. The flatbread in his hand had gone cold without him noticing.

He had a feeling. This man — they would meet again. Many times.
