Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 21: Chapter 11: Stone Supplies Cut Off — Quarrying the River Flats

A sealed order from Thebes can travel faster than rumor, faster than fear, faster than a man can sharpen his chisel for the day’s first strike. But it cannot travel faster than a stoneworker’s instinct — the gut-deep knowledge that when the quarry gates swing shut at dawn, something behind them has already been taken away.

Nekhem’s secret supply-ban decree takes effect on the fourth morning after the envoy departs the West Bank.

Kamon is woken by Papi hammering on his door. Papi does not knock on doors before work hours — not ever. This young stoneworker made himself a rule the day he first signed the guild registry: arrive at the workshop before anyone else, check every tool on the material yard, wipe the night dew off the gray slab, then begin screening crushed stone. He has never been late. Not once. So when his fist slams against the palm-wood door of Kamon’s shelter — the wood rattling in its frame, the dried mud caulking between the planks showering fine dust onto the threshold — Kamon knows something has broken before he even pulls the door open.

The predawn air still holds the desert’s bone-deep chill, that brief hour when the Egyptian night has not yet surrendered to the coming furnace of day. Through the gaps in the shelter wall, a sliver of gray light — barely brighter than darkness — cuts across the packed-earth floor.

”Master — the quarry gates. They’ve been sealed.”

Kamon wraps his coarse linen tunic around his shoulders and runs after Papi toward the quarry. The sky has not fully lightened. The morning mist over the Nile still clings to the palm groves, weaving through the fronds in slow, ghost-white ribbons. At the quarry entrance, an iron chain gleams cold through the fog. The chain is new — not the old rope the quarry has always used. The old chain was twisted from palm fiber, good only for stopping donkey carts, not people. This new chain is forged iron, each link as thick as a thumb. The lock is a copper lock stamped with the seal of the Theban Temple Works Office — the ram’s-head emblem of Amun etched into its face. The metal sweats cold in the damp morning air, beaded with condensation that catches the first pale hints of dawn.

Behind the chain stand three low-ranking temple priests. Kamon recognizes the one in front — his name is Mehi, a minor priest who handles quarry dispatching under Nekhem. When the envoy left the West Bank eight days ago, Mehi did not follow. He stayed. He kept his face hidden until this morning, and now he stands in the fog like a verdict finally unsealed.

”High Priest Nekhem has issued a decree.” Mehi does not bother with pleasantries. He draws a papyrus scroll sealed with blue clay from his sleeve and unrolls it, reading each character with the crisp enunciation of a man who has rehearsed this judgment until it has worn grooves in his tongue. The papyrus crackles faintly in the still air — dry, brittle, imperious. ”Effective immediately: all quarries, stone stockyards, and stone processing workshops on the West Bank registered under the jurisdiction of the Temple of Amun are hereby forbidden to supply any stone, crushed stone, or stone processing remnants to the West Bank Stonemasons’ Guild or its affiliates. Violators shall have their quarry operating rights confiscated, their temple craftsman licenses revoked, and their entire families barred from earning a livelihood on temple territory.”

He rolls the papyrus back up and tucks it into his sleeve. The motion is unhurried, practiced — the deliberate calm of men who hold chains and know the chained cannot reach them. ”This is not aimed at you alone — it is aimed at every craftsman who refuses to heed the temple’s call. The fifty craftsmen on your registry — from this day forward, not one of you will take so much as a grain of stone from any official West Bank quarry.”

Papi’s fists clench at his sides. The knuckles go bone-white, the tendons standing out like cord beneath the skin. Kamon says nothing. He looks past the iron chain — inside the quarry, the stone stockpile is still there. Dozens of marble rough blocks, quarried by his stoneworkers just yesterday, cut and dressed but not yet transported. They lean against the shed wall in a neat row, still bearing the chisel marks from the cliff face. Every one of those blocks — Kamon can trace with his eyes closed exactly which of his men swung the chisel, at what angle, what depth. The grain direction, the fracture lines, the bite of the blade into the stone. He knows them like he knows the faces of his men. But all of them are on the other side of this chain now. Like the craftsmen who walked away the night before last — still here, still visible, but held behind a chain no one can see.

”Mehi — these stones were not quarried for the temple. They were quarried for the clinic.”

”I do not care who they were quarried for.” Mehi’s voice carries no emotion at all — the flat, polished tone of a man who has been taught that mercy is a flaw in procedure. ”So long as this quarry is registered under the temple’s name — every block of stone that comes out of it must pass approval from the Temple Works Office. Your guild is not registered with the temple. It is not on the dispatch list. By regulation — you cannot take material.” He bites down on the words ”by regulation” the way the envoy bit down on ”one day” outside the workshop door. This is what they do best: use your own rules to deny the legitimacy of your existence. You speak of rules? We have rules too — and our rules are thirty years older than yours.

Kamon does not waste another word on him. He turns and walks back toward the workshop. After a few steps, he stops and says to Papi: ”Go get Lu Zhu. Then find Meru — tell him the quarry has been sealed. Have him tally how much stone is left in the Alliance warehouses.”

”Should I tell the brothers to stop work for today?”

”Don’t stop.” Kamon’s jaw is set, the muscle at the corner flexing once. ”The clinic foundation needs to be fully tamped today. No stone — then push out the mud bricks first. Mud bricks don’t need stone. They need clay and chopped straw.”

By the time he reaches the workshop, his stoneworkers have already heard. No one shouts. No one throws down their tools. They simply stand at the workshop entrance, watching Kamon walk back from the quarry. The morning sun has begun to burn through the mist now, a pale disk climbing above the palm canopy, and the heat is already starting to press down — that dry, insistent weight that will turn the crushed stone underfoot into a griddle by midday.

Seb lifts his stone chisel from his shoulder and plants it on the ground. The blade bites into the crushed stone with a sharp, dry clink. ”Want me to go argue with them?” His voice is very level — not calm, but tamped down. In fifteen years on the Theban temple construction site, he was never paid what he was owed, and he never once raised his voice to anyone. But he has been registered with the Stonemasons’ Guild for four days, and he is already ready to fight the temple for it. His knuckles flex on the chisel handle — once, twice — the way a man tests his grip before swinging.

”No.” Kamon says it flat. ”Arguing is useless. They know exactly what we’re doing — that is precisely why they’re sealing us off. Conserve what stone we have left. Priority goes to the first course of the clinic’s foundation walls. Where stone runs short, fill with mud brick and crushed-stone core.”

”What about the perimeter wall?” a wall mason asks. He is older, his beard flecked with limestone dust that never seems to wash out. ”The eastern battlement crenellations aren’t finished. After we raised it to three cubits last time, the stone for the corner watch post still hasn’t been filled in.”

Kamon hesitates — a fractional pause, no longer than a heartbeat.

Lu Zhu’s voice comes from behind him. ”The battlement stone — use the rubble pile outside the quarry. Leftover edge chippings from earlier screening. The grain size is uneven, so it won’t work for load-bearing walls — but it is good enough for battlement core fill. Clad the exterior with mud brick. The impact resistance will not drop by much.” He walks up beside Kamon. In his hand is a sheet of palm-fiber paper — on it, a simplified topographic sketch of the Nile’s west-bank stretch, with the river flat positions marked, the riverbed slope annotated, and the direction of sedimentary rock distribution traced in charcoal. The paper is still warm from his hand, the fibers soft and slightly fuzzy at the edges where he has erased and redrawn lines.

”What is that map for?” Kamon asks.

”Come with me. To the river flats.”

The river flats on the Nile’s west bank lie about half an hour’s walk west of the quarry. It is a stretch of sedimentary rock beach scoured by the river for thousands of years — stones not split from a mountain face, but carried here by water from far upstream. Every flood season, the Nile drags crushed stone, gravel, and cobbles down from the highlands and deposits them in the west-bank bend, layer upon layer, year upon year. When the waters recede, the stones lie exposed on the flats, and months of sun and wind strip the mud-crust from their surfaces, leaving the grain and texture clean and legible — like bones bleached by time.

By the time Kamon follows Lu Zhu to the river flats, the sun has risen clear of the palm grove. Morning light slants across the beach and bleaches the stones to a pale, luminous white — not the pure white of marble, but the particular gray-white of sedimentary rock, threaded with fine water-mark striations. The flats are covered in stone: some as tall as a man’s shin, some no bigger than a fist, scattered across the sand and silt as though the river tossed them there with an idle hand and never came back to rearrange them. The air tastes of wet stone and river silt — a clean, mineral sharpness, different from the dry limestone dust of the quarry. A breeze moves across the water, carrying the green scent of reeds and the faint, muddy sweetness of the shallows.

Kamon crouches. He picks up a stone, turns it over. The cross-section is flat. The grain is even. No hidden fracture lines. He picks up another — the same. A third. A fourth. He says nothing, but the speed of his hands accelerates — he is not thinking anymore. He is confirming. Every stone he flips, he confirms once. By the seventh stone, he sets it down, stands, and walks west along the edge of the flats for several dozen paces. Every stone he sees is the same quality — not a few isolated pieces of good stone. The entire stretch of river-flat sedimentary rock is suitable for civilian construction base material.

”These stones —” He crouches at a bend in the river downstream. With his palm he scrapes a shallow groove through the dried mud crust, and not even half a cubit down, the broken mud continues to reveal unbroken stone strata. The mud is cool beneath the crust, still damp from the last flood season, and it comes away in crumbly dark clumps that stain his fingers. ”Not scattered. Layer upon layer, stacked together. There’s more underneath.” His voice is controlled, flat — but Lu Zhu catches the tremor pressed deep in his throat. Not the tremor of a trapped man grabbing at straw. It is the tremor of a man who has worked stone for thirty years, touching good material — a tremor that is pure instinct, older than thought, the body recognizing what the mind has not yet had time to name.

”River-flat quarrying doesn’t need face-cutting,” Lu Zhu says. He crouches beside Kamon and draws a line in the river mud with his finger — from the flats to the settlement. The mud is soft and slightly warm where the sun has touched it. ”Just pry bars and crushing hammers. The surface weathered layer can be stripped with coarse sieves. Below the middle layer, the stone quality is best — suitable for foundation bedding and wall-base fill. The flats are level — the transport route is half the distance compared to the quarry, cutting handling costs by the same margin.” He pauses, taps the line he has drawn. ”But river-flat quarrying has risks. One: the flood season. The Nile rises every year, and the flats submerge. Quarrying can only happen between the water’s retreat and its return — from now until the next flood crest. You have roughly four months. Two: water-scouring creates uneven stone quality. The stones close to the riverbank have been soaked long-term — their texture is softer. They cannot be used as load-bearing members. The stones on the terrace farther from the water — their quality is not far off the basalt from the quarry face.”

”Four months is enough.” Kamon stands. He claps the river mud from his palms — it comes off in dry flakes, already crusting in the rising heat. ”After four months, we will have found new supply channels. Meru is already in contact with private quarries through the Merchant Alliance. But we cannot wait those four months. I am bringing men here this afternoon to open the flats — we will take a test batch back first and check the strength. If it passes, every course of the clinic foundation from the second layer up will use river-flat stone. Only the bottom load-bearing course stays with the stock marble.”

”River-flat quarrying cannot use the old quarry-face methods,” Lu Zhu says. ”The stone is covered under alluvial deposits. You need to strip the surface alluvium before you can even see the stone bed. You know the geology here better than the quarry — you decide the layering approach.”

”My approach is this: no chisel here yet.” Kamon lays his stone chisel flat on the mud and shifts the pry bar’s position instead. The chisel gleams dully in the sun, its blade still sharp from yesterday’s work. ”The chisel hits fractured strata here — no purchase. Strip the surface alluvium first — down to the bedrock face. Work the pry bar along the grain of the stone layers. Same principle as splitting rough blocks off a quarry face — the difference is, these layers are thinner. Use shorter-handled pry bars — saves strength.” But he shakes his head quickly, the line of his mouth tightening by a fraction. ”River-flat stone has its flaw: scoured by the river year after year, the stone body may hold fine internal cracks — not like the solid rough blocks split from the mountain at the quarry. Load-bearing walls still need the stock marble underneath. The river-flat material cannot carry the full weight of a wall.”

”The clinic’s load-bearing walls account for less than twenty percent of the total wall area,” Lu Zhu says. ”The remaining eighty percent are non-load-bearing partition walls and filler walls. Non-load-bearing walls have much lower compressive strength requirements — river-flat stone is more than adequate.” As he speaks, he picks up a palm-sized cobblestone and scrapes it across the surface of a larger boulder nearby. The boulder’s face shows only a faint gray scratch — no gouge, no groove. The sound is a dry, gritty rasp. ”See? Hardness is not a problem. Good for civilian wall-base fill, foundation bedding, drainage-channel masonry — all of it. Where it is not hard enough, supplement with mud brick and crushed-stone core.” He weighs the cobblestone in his palm — solid, dense, fitting perfectly in his grip. ”Cobbles of this size can also be screened directly for damp-proof bedding fill under the cellar floor. Less labor than crushing small stonesat the quarry — the river has done the screening for us.”

Kamon says nothing more. He walks a circuit of the river flat, pace unhurried, every step probing the thickness of the stone beneath his feet. He does not have drawings. He does not have palm paper. He simply stamps his heel several times against the stone surface on the high terrace and listens to the echo — good stone rings crisp; stone with hollow pockets rings dull. This is the first craft his father ever taught him: quarrying with your ears. Eyes can misread grain. Hands can miss cracks. But ears do not lie — a good stone struck rings whole; a stone with hidden fractures inside gives back a broken sound. He has been listening to stones sing for thirty years, and what he hears today on the Nile river flats is one unbroken chain of crisp echoes — the entire stretch of flats is solid.

That afternoon, Kamon returns to the river flats with twenty stoneworkers. They bring pry bars, crushing hammers, coarse palm-fiber sieves, and handcarts.

The first act of opening a flat is not quarrying — it is clearing the field. Kamon puts Papi in charge of four men, tasking them with stripping the surface alluvium from the terrace zone to expose the stone bed beneath. Papi splits them into two teams of two: one pair sweeps away loose sand with palm-frond brooms, the rough bristles hissing against the stone; the other pair works short pry bars into the stone seams, probing for depth. Papi himself crouches on the stone face at the terrace’s outermost edge — the spot where a Nile tributary has scoured the stone layer thinner than anywhere else, just thin enough to split open a cross-section for visual measurement of the stone bed’s thickness and layering structure. He presses his palm against the cold, damp stone surface and traces his hand along the grain several times. The stone is slick and cool under his fingers, still holding the river’s chill from last night. Then he takes a charcoal stick and draws a horizontal line beside each clay-seam between stone layers. This marking method was not taught by Lu Zhu — it is something Papi stole with his eyes from the old master craftsmen at the quarry. Those old masters could not read. They used charcoal lines on stone faces as their labels. Papi draws six lines from top to bottom on this stone face — two for the weathered surface layer, three for the good middle material, one for the silt-clogged bottom layer.

”This thickness is thinner than the rough blocks off the quarry face — but it is not crushed waste stone.” Papi speaks to Kamon, who has come over to look. ”A whole slab pried loose should yield at least three sections of standard-dimension wall-base bedding stone.” Kamon crouches in front of Papi’s horizontal lines and slaps his palm against the cross-section of a middle-layer slab. Stone dust sifts down — dry. No wet sand clings to his palm. The dust is fine and pale, drifting in the afternoon light.

”The slab surface moisture is below the safety line. No need to air-dry. Go straight to the pry bar.” He tilts his head to check the clouds — cumulus, thin, wind out of the northwest. No rain this afternoon. The sky is a hard, pale blue, washed out by the heat. He stands and addresses the men behind him: ”Before the sun drops behind the palm grove this afternoon, get this entire layer of slabs pried free. Air them overnight — they will be ready to load onto carts tomorrow morning.”

He takes Seb and several veteran quarrymen himself, working pry bars along the grain of the stone bed to lift the first layer of slabs — not brute-forcing them out, but sliding the bar tips into the natural joint planes of the strata. One pry, one lift. The slabs split along their natural grain lines, the cross-sections as flat as if worked with a chisel. The stone gives with a low, grinding crack — not the sharp snap of fracture, but the deep, satisfying sound of material parting where it was always meant to part. Meket, working the face opposite Kamon, misaligns one pry — the bar head slips, springs free, and snaps into the clay seam between layers, showering the face of a young laborer waiting to load the cart with a spray of fine sand. The boy sputters, blinking grit from his eyes. Meket wraps four extra turns of thin palm cord around his pry bar’s grip — the bar he brought with him from Thebes. He glances back at Papi: ”New pry bar’s first day eating country sand. It needed the lesson.” The young laborer, sand still dusting his eyelashes, grins and wipes his face with the back of his wrist.

”This terrace — follow the grain with the pry bar, but do not go too fast.” Kamon has pried free his third slab. He stops, studies a faint dark diagonal streak illuminated by the sun on the cross-section. ”On the second palm’s worth of effort — forearm strength is enough. No need for the lower back. If I cannot finish the good stone on this terrace in four months, that’s on me.” He marks the cross-section with charcoal, then sketches a simplified layer diagram on the stone slab beside him — surface weathered layer, middle good material, bottom silt layer. Each layer’s thickness is annotated with approximate dimensions. The charcoal scrapes dryly across the stone, leaving dense black marks that the sun will not fade.

Toward evening, the first cartload of river-flat stone rolls into the settlement’s material yard.

As the cart passes over the newly laid stone threshold at the material yard entrance, Seb crouches beside it for a look. The threshold was set half a month ago, unified by the guild — the yard entrance raised roughly five finger-widths above ground level, to prevent rainy-season backflow. The river-flat slabs are exactly two and a half finger-widths thick — fitting the pre-cut groove in the threshold with no gap at all. This doorway, from the day it was built, knew what kind of material would come through it someday. The stoneworkers simply did not know, back then, where that material would come from.

Meru stands at the material yard entrance, watching the slabs stacked neat and square on the cart. He stares for a moment, the stem of his pipe gone still between his fingers. Then he walks over, lifts one slab, and runs his charcoal-callused finger along the cross-section — slowly, tracing the full circumference. Then he flips the slab to examine the back face. The water-mark striations spread across it like tree rings — the Nile’s record, laid down over hundreds of flood seasons of scouring and deposition. The texture is cool and faintly ridged under his fingertip, the stone still holding a trace of the river’s damp.

”Hardness passes. Good enough for non-load-bearing wall fill.” Meru sets the slab back on the cart. His finger is still touching the water marks — not flat marks, but gently undulating marks, like waves printed into stone. ”The clinic’s wall-base fill — based on the drawing quantities — this batch covers at least sixty percent of the shortfall. The Alliance warehouses still have about twelve days’ worth of inventory stone. Add this — we can hold until the private quarry contract is signed.” He straightens, taps the bowl of his pipe against the heel of his palm to clear the ash. ”I am sending a letter tonight to Old Nakht — ask him to dispatch a batch of crushed stone first from his private quarry upstream. That site is outside temple jurisdiction. Not a large output, but it is steady.”

”Transport cost?” Kamon asks.

”Twenty percent over the temple quarry rate. But it is reliable. I have done three years of business with Old Nakht’s quarry. Three years ago, when he was opening rough blocks upstream, the Temple Works Office sent a man to him — demanding he sell at temple-set prices or they would not issue his quarrying license. He took that batch upstream himself, hauled it all the way to the West Bank, bypassed half the Memphis market, and went door to door finding buyers. In the end, the old stoneworkers of the West Bank village pooled their money and bought his entire stock.” Meru flips his ledger back a few pages and shows Kamon a three-year-old entry — the papyrus has yellowed, the ink faded to brown, but the figures are clear. That year, Old Nakht’s crushed stone shipped to the West Bank came at twenty percent above the temple price. And not a single piece of waste stone was mixed into the load. ”This man does not answer to gods. He answers to contracts. Three years I have dealt with him, and he has never broken a single agreement. This time — a six-month long-term contract. He set two conditions. One: when each batch of crushed stone is screened, the Stonemasons’ Guild sends its own people to inspect. Not his men — because if his men do the inspecting, they will cover up flaws for him. He does not need that cover, but he fears the guild will not trust him without it. Two: should the temple send people to wreck his quarry, the guild bears no secondary liability. He takes the wrecking alone.” Meru closes the ledger. The cover slaps shut with a dry thump, and a puff of old dust lifts from the pages. ”My position: the terms are acceptable. A twenty percent premium buys six months of stability. That is worth it. Old Nakht will confirm within three days. I am sending the contract upstream tonight.”

Kamon looks at the pile of river-flat stone in the material yard and is silent for a moment. The slabs still carry mud from the Nile flats — brown ochre, different from the gray-white limestone dust of the West Bank quarry. He lifts one slab off the cart, sets it on the crushed-stone ground of the yard, and lays his palm-fiber measuring rope across it. He checks the thickness. ”Exactly two and a half finger-widths. Same as the standard rough blocks from the quarry face.” He coils the rope back around his arm. The palm fibers are warm from his skin, soft with use.

Around him, farmers and stoneworkers drift closer. Someone runs a finger over the water-mark striations on a slab. Someone knocks a knuckle against the stone face to hear the echo. Someone fetches the whetstone from his own home and holds it up against the slab to compare hardness. Beside a pile of crushed stone, three underage stoneworker apprentices are crouched in a circle. They take turns putting the smallest cobblestone in their mouths and biting down — not eating. Testing density with their teeth. It is the crudest and most accurate field test the old quarry masters ever taught them: a good stone bites back with solid resistance at the root of the tooth; a bad stone crumbles against the bite. All three nod — nothing crumbled. Then each spits out a mouthful of fine sand in turn and points at the others’ grit-coated teeth, laughing. The laughter rolls through the material yard, carrying on the cooling evening air. Even Seb, who almost never smiles, lets out a grunt through his nose. He takes his charcoal stick and writes the batch grading code on the flank of a freshly arrived stone block. Then he pats the stone’s surface three times — a gesture he invented himself for material inspection: one pat for pass, two for reject, three for pass with minor imperfections. Meket worked fifteen years in Thebes and never once had his own gesture — on temple construction sites, whether stone passed or failed came down to one thing: the foreman’s word. Now, Seb’s three pats are the entry permit for the guild’s new stone stock.

”River-flat quarrying — it is not hard.” Kamon speaks quietly, almost to himself. ”It is just that no one ever thought to come here before. Because no one ever needed to. The temple quarry never ran short.”

”Now it has,” Lu Zhu says.

”Good that it has.” Kamon stands. He scrubs the river mud off his palms against his work tunic. The fabric is rough, the mud already drying to powder. ”At least now I know — without that quarry, my chisel can still bite stone.”

That night, a crowd gathers around the watch post at the settlement entrance — farmers from the direction of the river flats, drawn by word of the stoneworkers quarrying the beach. They come to see the river-flat stone.

An old fisherman who has spent decades on the Nile crouches beside the stone pile. His face is seamed like weathered leather, his finger joints deformed by decades of hauling nets. He runs his hand across the water-mark striations on a slab — the same hand that has pulled fish from this river since before most of the men here were born. Then he says a sentence that stops every person within earshot: ”I have fished this river thirty years. I have stepped on these stones every day, climbing ashore. Never once thought they could build a house.”

”They can,” Kamon says. ”No one ever tried, that’s all.”

The old fisherman nods. He stands, claps the river sand from his palms. ”Tomorrow I will come help carry. No need to pay me. Just teach me to read the stone.”

Kamon looks at the man’s graying hair, at the finger joints warped by fishing nets — the knuckles swollen, the skin crosshatched with a thousand tiny scars from hooks and lines. He is silent for two breaths. Then: ”Papi — tomorrow, give this old master a sorting station on the river flat. No heavy lifting. He has looked at this river’s face for thirty years — he knows better than any of us which stone is good once the water drops. All he has to do is stand there and look at color and grain. Good stones to the left, onto the cart for the material yard. Poor stones to the right, crushed for road fill.”

The old fisherman grins. The grin bares several yellowed teeth, their enamel worn down by the Nile wind. ”That work I can do. My eyes are nothing special for stone — but I am used to watching the water. Whether the stones under the water are good or not — I can guess seven or eight parts in ten, just from the ripples on the surface.”

Beside him, Papi responds: ”Then tomorrow, we will learn to read water-ripples from you.”

And so the next morning, an unofficial post appears on the river flat.

The old fisherman stands barefoot in a shallow pool at the flat’s edge, his soles pressing against stone surfaces the river has been polishing for hundreds of years. He holds a sharpened palm-wood pole. For every batch of stone brought up, he draws the pole tip lightly across the stone face, then checks what clings to the point — fine mud or coarse sand. Fine mud means the stone was submerged in deep water during flood season: the texture will be soft. Coarse sand means shallow-water terrace material: hard enough for wall bases. He gives every batch of stone a name of his own: ”The Yellow Slabs from the West Cape Terrace.” ”The Gray Strips from the Ox Drinking Bay.” ”That Patch of Speckled Stuff Under the River-God Shrine’s Foundation.” The stoneworkers on the flat laugh at first. Then they discover his folk-names are easier to remember than Papi’s charcoal batch codes. Every stone, called by its name, declares its water-level origin, its orientation, its hardness. Papi enters both the charcoal codes and the folk-names into the river-flat stone inventory ledger. For the column heading, he writes a line himself: ”Old Fisherman Sorting File — Reading the Water-Ripples.”

This is the first time since the Stonemasons’ Guild was founded that a man joins the work site as a ”Water-Watcher” — carrying not a chisel, but thirty years of staring at the Nile. Kamon stations him at the head of the stone-sorting line — because he knows that the skill of reading stone comes not just from the arm. It comes from the long, quiet accumulation in a craftsman’s bones. This old fisherman has walked barefoot ashore on the same river-flat stones every day for thirty years. He does not need to touch them to know their texture, their grain, their hardness. His eyes alone tell him.

Near the stone pile, that figure with the crutch has come again.

Taha stands a dozen paces beyond the watch post, leaning on his palm-wood crutch, watching the stoneworkers push cart after cart of river-flat stone into the material yard. His gaze moves from the slabs on the carts to Kamon’s back — Kamon is crouched before the stone pile, explaining to several newly arrived farmers how to use the coarse sieve to separate crushed stone by grain size. Taha is too far to make out every word, but the gestures — those he knows like his own heartbeat. Right hand holding the sieve. Left hand scraping stone. Thumb braced against the sieve rim, flipping outward. The angle of the wrist-spin precisely separates three grain sizes at once. This is the gesture the old foreman made them repeat a thousand times a day when they were apprentices together on the quarry face. Forty years have passed. Kamon’s hands have not changed.

His voice carries through the evening air — not loud, but steady. The exact same voice he used reading out the five guild regulations at the workshop door.

Taha stands with his crutch for a long time.

Then he bends down and picks up a chip of river-flat stone from the ground — a fragment knocked loose during cart-loading, no bigger than a fingernail. He places the chip in his palm and slowly rubs his thumb across the stone’s grain. The fragment is rough, still carrying traces of river silt. He tucks it into his sleeve. Then he turns and limps slowly back the way he came. The tap of his crutch on the crushed-stone ground is more urgent than before — not urgency. Nearness. He is one step closer to the day he wants to come back.

At the edge of the palm grove on the far side of the river flats, a figure in a coarse linen tunic crouches in the shadows of the trees. He is not West Bank local — locals walking at night have no reason to crouch. He faces the direction of the stoneworkers’ quarrying operation and stares for a long time. His gaze sweeps from the sorting station on the terrace to the stacking zone at the material yard entrance. Then he draws a small limestone tablet from inside his garment and writes a line of text on it. After writing, he reads the line again — then erases several characters and rewrites them. Beneath his fingernails is embedded a particular gray-white limestone dust — the kind that only settles under the nails of skilled craftsmen who have spent years dressing rough blocks in a temple quarry. It is not the same as the brown-ochre mud from the river flats. No one knows whether he is an informant planted by Nekhem, or an old craftsman driven to desperation by the supply cutoff. The moonlight falls from behind him, leaving his face unreadable. All that is visible is the tablet disappearing back into his garment, and then the figure rising, turning, walking away along the dirt road toward Thebes. The night wind threading through the palm grove soon smooths the footprints he leaves in the grass — but the river-flat stone output, the terrace layer thickness, and the quarrying headcount recorded on his limestone tablet are already being carried toward Thebes.
