Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 17: Chapter 7: Tiya Rides West --- Corvée Data Field Verification

Tiya was a royal women’s scribe from Thebes, specializing in population and land registries. She had been dispatched by the palace to assist Asaf in compiling the corvée reform data. It was a morning in early summer when her flat-bottomed barge tied up at the White River dock --- the local name for the settlement on the west bank of the Nile.

She had traveled south from Thebes aboard a grain barge returning empty, riding the Nile’s current for three days and two nights. The grain sacks on deck were stacked high, and she had been squeezed into the narrow gaps between them, her knees spread with the ever-thickening roll of papyrus --- raw data on household registrations, acreage, and corvée labor days reported by each nome. Scattered like a string of beads without a cord. Every time the boat pulled in at a ferry crossing, she disembarked and walked the villages to cross-check the numbers. By the time she reached the White River, the papyrus had swollen from one roll to three, bound with twine and cradled in her arms --- as heavy as a stone freshly hauled from the riverbed.

No one met her at the dock. This was no slight --- the White River had been in chaos for two weeks. Word of the pharaoh’s failing health had reached them from Thebes, and the people’s panic had traveled faster than any royal courier. The town gates were backed up with long queues --- farmers dragging their families in to ask for news, carrying chicken crates on shoulder poles, grain sacks on their backs, unsure whether to stay or leave. Tiya clutched her papyrus rolls and pushed through the crowd.

By the time she arrived at the granary’s back courtyard, wiping sweat from her face, she found Lu Zhu crouched on the ground sketching a drainage culvert profile. Kamon was passing charcoal beside him. Seb and Hapy crouched nearby, stacking limestone leveling blocks and comparing the morning’s foundation-settlement records—their faces still smudged with mud from the drainage-line layout they’d just finished running. Four people, grey with dust and grime, clearly just back from the construction site.

Lu Zhu finished one more stroke of the charcoal before looking up. He saw the papyrus rolls weighing down Tiya’s arms, and his brow furrowed slightly.

”How many villages did you cover?”

”All of them,” Tiya said. She spread the three rolls across the stone table, weighing down the four corners with chunks of rock. Then she stepped back half a pace. ”This is the data through the sixth month. The seventh month hasn’t been fully compiled yet, but the trend is already visible.”

Lu Zhu wiped the dust from his hands and leaned over the table. The papyrus held far more than dry numbers. Beside every column of figures, Tiya had drawn simplified diagrams in charcoal: frequency curves of labor conscription across the peak farming months, the proportion of able-bodied men taken from each household, the inverse curve tracking labor days against grain yields. Her handwriting wasn’t pretty, but the logic was razor-sharp. Every arrow pointed toward the same conclusion: corvée conscription during the planting and harvest seasons was systematically destroying the labor structure of the farming villages along the river.

”Twelve villages around the White River,” Tiya said, her finger tracing the topmost roll. ”This spring, during the planting season, four hundred and twenty men were conscripted. Not for military service. For corvée labor --- building noblemen’s villas, extending estate walls for the old priests. Four hundred and twenty able-bodied men, pulled from their fields at planting time. The farthest ones were hauled three days’ march to the worksite. And their land? The old people and half-grown children planted it. The seed went in, but the hoeing didn’t keep up. Irrigation water --- they couldn’t fight for a turn at the canal. I asked every household, door to door. This summer’s harvest will be down at least three-tenths.”

Kamon crouched beside the stone table, staring at the curves on the papyrus. His face grew darker and heavier with every line he read.

His own worksite had lost men to conscription this year too. He’d set up the grey slab at the quarry, started the registration roll—but the scattered entries still didn’t add up to a real system. Looking at Asaf’s province-wide data now, he understood for the first time just how much bigger the hole was than he’d imagined. He’d been patching a wall; the whole foundation was cracked. Every time a conscription order came down, he never dared to ask ”where are they being taken” or ”how long.” He only knew the men were gone before daybreak.

”These numbers you’ve recorded here,” Kamon said, his finger touching one of the steepest downward curves. ”What is this?”

”The proportion of able-bodied men taken from each household.” Tiya paused. ”In half the villages, more than two men out of every ten are absent from home for one to two months out of the year. Not voluntarily out to find work. Corvée labor. No wages. Just two meals of coarse grain a day.”

Silence settled over the stone table and lasted a long time. A reed fiber, carried in on the breeze, landed on the papyrus. No one brushed it away.

Tiya arrived at dusk. She was the one who had been expected --- a royal scribe with a sharp eye for figures, sent from Thebes to assist with the fieldwork. She had disembarked at the ferry stop before the White River --- that tributary crossing led to three small villages, the plots Lu Zhu had earlier asked Asaf to survey on his way. By the time she walked into the granary’s back courtyard, clutching a stack of papyrus even thicker than the one she’d brought from Thebes, the sky had already darkened. The oil lamp had just been lit, and a swarm of moths was circling frantically around the flame. She spotted the spread of data on the stone table at a glance. She leaned in and studied it for a moment, then abruptly set her own papyrus down beside it. From the cloth pouch at her waist she pulled a flat slab of limestone and a sharpened charcoal stick.

”This thing you’ve got here——” she pointed at the arrangement of numbers and charts on Asaf’s papyrus, her voice crisp and without ceremony. ”The structure is wrong.”

Tiya positioned the limestone slab under the lamplight and used her charcoal to draw three horizontal lines and four vertical ones, gridding out a rough but functional table. Across the top, she wrote: Name. Trade. Age. Date of conscription. Purpose. Days served. Travel days. Daily wage — none. Daily rations — two coarse meals.

”This is no simple household register,” Tiya said. On the far right of the table she added four more columns: Land lost. Wages owed. Wages paid. Balance due. ”This is an hourly-work ledger. What you’re recording is not a person. It’s a unit of labor that was taken without compensation. Every entry must have corroborating proof. Every category of loss must be quantifiable. Once it’s quantifiable, you can speak it aloud in the royal court.”

Asaf stared at the limestone slab, utterly transfixed. He had spent the better part of a lifetime as a low-ranking copy clerk in Thebes. He had organized and transcribed countless registers and ledgers. No one had ever shown him this way of keeping accounts. It wasn’t that the old clerks were stupid — it was that the old system had never needed this level of precision. It only wanted to calculate what it collected. It never wanted to calculate what it lost. Tiya had turned it around: the first thing you calculate is ”loss.” The second is ”revenue.” The third is ”the gap.” This inverted logic of accounting nailed, directly onto a data table, the one thing the old system least wanted anyone to see.

”Tomorrow we go work through the villages and the workshops,” Tiya said, setting down her charcoal. ”We fill in every cell of this blank table.”

Over the following days, Tiya and Asaf walked almost every village within reach of the White River.

They made a point of arriving when the craftsmen and farmers were resting after the midday meal. Tiya never sat. She didn’t wait for anyone to pour her water. She stood in the doorway, her limestone slab tucked under her arm, and she asked. Not ”were you conscripted” — that was too vague. She asked: ”In the second tenday of last year’s planting season, where were you. How far was the place they took you. How many days did you walk. How many days did you work. How many meals did they give you. After you came back, how much of your own land went untended.” Every question required not an adjective but a number.

The first village they walked was Sedi, about an hour and a half from Memphis. At the village entrance stood a few old sycamore fig trees, their trunks weathered white by years of wind and sand. A group of women sat beneath them twisting rope.

Tiya didn’t head straight for the headman’s house. She stopped beside one of the fig trees, tucked her limestone slab under her arm, and asked the nearest woman: ”Last year, during the planting season — how many people did your household lose to conscription?” A man in a grey tunic, standing nearby, coughed once and walked quickly toward the village, his pace deliberate. Asaf caught the movement and read it instantly: the temple’s people had already been through, warning everyone that officials asking about corvée meant new levies, and no one should say a word.

The woman’s hands paused on the rope she was twisting. She looked up at Tiya — not a constable, but the way she asked, there was no dodging it.

”Two,” the woman said quietly. ”My husband and my eldest son. Second tenday of planting season. They were taken to dig an irrigation channel for the estate across the river. Twenty-one days. When they came back, the wheat had already headed — the weeds were taller than the stalks.”

”Twenty-one days,” Tiya recorded on her slab. ”Did they feed you?”

”Barley porridge, morning and evening. Thick, no vegetables, no salt. At midday we ate our own dry rations we’d brought from home.”

”Wages?”

”Nothing.” The woman picked up her rope again, twisting as she spoke. ”Same every year.”

Tiya didn’t stop there. She stepped back and swept her eyes across the women under the fig trees, her voice steady: ”The rest of you — last year, how many did you lose to conscription?”

For a moment no one answered. Then one of them said, low: ”My son-in-law — he was taken to build a temple wall. A full month. When he came back, the sheep had been left untended. Half the lambs were dead.” That broke the silence. Another woman’s nephew had been taken to haul stone — promised fifteen days, kept a month and a half. Another household had lost three able-bodied men at once during the harvest — the old man and both his sons. The wheat was left to the old woman and three grandchildren. They cut for half a month, then dried it, then it rained halfway through, and half the crop sprouted in the field. Tiya asked, recorded, asked, recorded. Her charcoal never stopped.

At the tail end of the stoneworkers’ hamlet, an old stonemason crouched on his doorstep and listened to Tiya’s full set of questions. He didn’t immediately offer his own numbers. He just lowered his head and rubbed at his calluses for a long time. Then he looked up.

”You women officials ask such detailed questions. Is it actually going to reach the pharaoh?”

”It will,” Asaf said.

”And if the people above read it — what use is it?”

Tiya tucked her charcoal back into her pouch and brushed the dust off her limestone slab. ”All the work-hours you reported — none of them were paid. Do you know how many days of unpaid corvée labor the White River region was subjected to last year?”

The old stonemason shook his head.

”Fourteen thousand days,” Tiya said. ”That’s a preliminary estimate. The exact number — I’ll know after I’ve walked every village. Fourteen thousand days. Converted to full-year units, that is the entire annual labor of at least forty able-bodied men. The stones, the grain, the houses of the White River — every one of them was diminished by those days.”

The old stonemason was silent.

After a very long pause he said: ”Last year my son was conscripted to build a horse stable for a nobleman. Twenty days. When he came back, half an acre of our own wheat had rotted. That night we ate crushed barley borrowed from the neighbor’s house.”

He finished reporting his data. Tiya recorded it. Then the old stonemason stood up, went back into his house, rummaged around for a while, and brought out a small, smooth-polished piece of limestone. It was covered with tally marks struck with a stone nail. He couldn’t read or write, but every time he was conscripted, he carved one line on the stone. When he came home, he carved another line. The empty space between them was ”the days I wasn’t home.” Tiya took the stone, turned it over in her hands, and said quietly: ”This is more accurate than anything in the official registers.” The old man stared at her for a long moment, then cracked a slow, toothless grin. His data had been recorded all along. No one had ever asked. No one had ever believed it.

On the third evening, Tiya assembled every slab into a master table on the stone surface, connecting all the data columns with charcoal lines into a single total ledger.

Asaf arranged the dozen-odd limestone slabs in a circle. Every slab was now densely covered in Tiya’s handwriting; on some you could no longer make out the white limestone beneath, only a mass of charcoal characters. Tiya stood in the center of the circle, moving her charcoal stick from slab to slab as she spoke:

”Stonemasons — conscripted an average of forty days per year. Zero wages. All assigned to private construction projects contracted by nobles and the old priesthood. Carpenters — thirty-five days. Same cause. Brickmakers and kiln workers — twenty-five days. These cluster around the planting and harvest seasons — because nobles rush to complete their work before the rains. General farming households — no fixed trade, pulled as unskilled labor. Their total days are comparable to the craftsmen’s — the difference is that farmers don’t have a fixed workshop to return to. When a farmer is taken, no one takes over the farm work. Their losses are the heaviest.”

She moved on to the next slab. ”Now, travel attrition. Some villages had men hauled to worksites three days’ march away — six days lost on the road alone, and those six days count as part of the conscription term. Travel costs and dry rations — all out of the worker’s own pocket. No clean water. At night they sleep on the bare ground. When the term ends — they’re released with no wages and no written record. Next time they’re conscripted again, the record of the previous service exists only in a single clerk’s memory. No one checks.”

She moved to the final slab and pressed her charcoal hard against the stone. ”If we calculate for the full year — the White River and its twenty-three surrounding villages were subjected to no fewer than fourteen thousand days of unpaid corvée labor last year. Converted to full-year able-bodied labor, this is equivalent to the entire annual labor of at least forty men, consumed for nothing. These forty men ate from their own households. Their clothes were sewn by their wives. Their farm work was done by old people and children covering for them. And the fruits of their labor — all of it became noblemen’s villas and priests’ walls.”

Lu Zhu sat at the table from dusk until three rounds of lamp oil had burned away. He did not interrupt Tiya once. Not because he had nothing to say — because the weight of the data pressed down on the room, and each layer peeled back revealed a deeper problem beneath. He had calculated work-hours before, on construction sites — to maximize the efficiency of the wall-builders, the brick-carriers, the sand-sievers. Tiya was calculating something else: ”how much labor the entire system has devoured.” This was not construction accounting. This was institutional dissection. The charcoal in her hand — it was not drawing a table. It was tracing the lesions of an entire old order onto a sheet of stone. And the format she’d laid out fit directly onto the guild’s existing work-hour records — Kamon’s registration rolls could now be standardized to this template.

”If this ledger is submitted,” Asaf said, his voice low, ”the people above may not understand it.”

”They’ll understand,” Tiya said. ”They’ll look at the last column.”

The last column was ”balance due” — wages owed minus wages paid. Not one person was not a negative number. Not one person’s account balanced.

”If the pharaoh’s illness is real,” Asaf said abruptly, his fingertip brushing the edge of the papyrus, ”then the first month after the new pharaoh ascends is the easiest window to pass new laws. The old nobles haven’t yet learned the new pharaoh’s temper. The old priests haven’t yet secured their connections at the new court. If we submit the data in that window — we won’t need any political maneuvering. The data itself will be the power.”

Lu Zhu nodded. The lamp flame danced in his eyes.

”Check every number one more time,” he said. ”Every figure must withstand cross-examination. If this ledger is to become the draft for a repeal decree, it must be more precise than any construction drawing I have ever made. When we get back to the West Bank, we’ll redo every stonemason’s records to match this format.”

Deep into the night, Asaf sat under the lamp transcribing Tiya’s hourly-work ledger. He copied slowly. Every row of numbers — he checked each against its source three times. Tiya stood beside him, watching the characters form under his brush. His handwriting was not, in truth, particularly fine — far inferior to her own. But it was steady. Once a brushstroke landed, he never blotted or corrected it.

Tiya spoke suddenly. ”How many years did you work as a copy clerk in Thebes?”

”Fifteen.” Asaf did not lift his head.

”Fifteen years. You gathered data on these villages. Did you ever think about submitting it?”

Asaf’s brush faltered for a fraction of a heartbeat. Ink pooled at the tip and spread into a small dark stain at the edge of the paper. ”More than once. Every time, I wrote it up. And every time, I set it on the floor. The floor is the safest place. No official will ever bend down to read something on the floor.”

”And this time?”

”This time is different.” Asaf lifted his brush. At the very bottom of the papyrus, he signed his name — not the usual copy clerk’s serial notation, but his full name, neatly and deliberately, stroke by stroke. ”This time, there are people on the floor.”

Lu Zhu rose from the stone table and walked out into the courtyard. In the deep night, the Nile’s breath carried the mingled scent of mud and reed-sweetness, threaded with the faint tang of lime burning in the distance. Kamon was still awake, leaning against the courtyard wall, twisting a reed leaf absently between his fingers.

”If that document can actually be submitted —” Kamon began, then stopped. He didn’t finish the sentence. He was a stonemason. He didn’t need to understand data. He only needed to understand the hardness of stone, the bearing capacity of a foundation, the moment a wall crack would begin to spread. But Tiya’s table had shown him something else — some cracks didn’t need eyes to see. Numbers could illuminate them. And from now on, the guild’s rules would have official standards to match.

Lu Zhu said: ”If it can’t be submitted, we’ll still submit it.”

The next morning at first light, Tiya sealed the transcribed hourly-work ledger inside a stitched-shut linen sleeve and placed it in Asaf’s hands. The remaining limestone slabs and raw data she left at the White River granary, instructing Seb and Hapy to reorganize the West Bank stonemasons’ registration records using the same format. Asaf departed for Thebes that same noon, cradling the bundle in his arms — exactly as he had arrived. Heavy. Like carrying a stone. Only this stone had just been excavated from beneath the ground, still carrying the mud and the river-water, and also the names of dozens and hundreds of ordinary people.

Standing at the stern of the boat, Asaf looked back. Behind him, the walls of the White River rose from the morning haze — made of brick, rough and unfinished, no match for any Theban temple’s splendor. But stone by stone, the walls had gone up. And the ledger now resting in his arms — that, too, had been built.

It was already dusk when Asaf’s boat tied up at the Theban docks. He stepped off the gangplank clutching the linen sleeve, and beneath a date palm at the end of the pier, a man was waiting. Not a constable. Not a Civil Affairs colleague. It was the leopard-skin-sashed attendant who’d once ridden behind Nekhem at the granary gate. He wore civilian clothes now, but his spine was still straight as a palm cane. He pulled Asaf behind the trunk and spoke in a voice low and dry: ”Lord Nekhem knows you brought something back from Memphis. He told me to tell you—the numbers on those pages, once they enter the Theban archive, they’re just waste paper. But you still have a chance. If you bring them to Lord Nekhem’s desk first, the deputy directorship of the Land Office is yours. You don’t have to answer now. But when you stepped off that boat—he sent me to wait right here.”

The attendant paused, then added: ”Lord Nekhem has already contacted several old noble families in Upper Egypt. Those papers of yours—even if you submit them, they won’t pass the council. If you know what’s good for you, there’s still a wider road open.”

Asaf looked at this man who, only months ago, had strutted at Nekhem’s stirrup, and who now stood before him hollow-eyed, his robe hem unironed. The reform decree had shattered their sinecures, but not their information network, not their connections. He clutched the linen sleeve tighter and gave only one reply: ”Lord Nekhem still thinks about me. That’s very dedicated of him.” Then he stepped around the palm trunk and walked toward the city. Behind him, the attendant let out a cold laugh—not loud, but in the dusk it cut like a blade drawn slowly across stone.

The date palm’s shadow stretched long in the fading light. Asaf’s steps were steady as if nailed to the ground. The ledger in his arms still carried the warmth of his body—the sweat-and-tears account of dozens of villages, hundreds of households, calculated stroke by stroke. The gates of Thebes stood ahead, inside them the tangled web of old power, outside them the ceaseless flow of the Nile. He knew that stepping through those gates meant entering a contest with no easy outcome. But he didn’t look back.
