Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 30: Chapter 6: Trade Routes Converge — New Dispatch Rules Take Shape

On the second day out from the abandoned shrine, the caravan left the desert and reentered the Nile Valley’s farm country.

The land shifted by degrees. First, between the limestone ridges set back from the river, narrow strips of wheat field appeared — each strip no wider than two or three cubits, wedged between pale stone spines, so that from a distance they looked like green shims driven into fissures in the rock. Then the strips widened, merged, grew continuous. The stone ridges retreated to the roadside and became field ridges. Then the palms returned — at first as scattered, crooked old trees standing alone on the boundary line between sand and wheat, their crowns so sparse that only a tuft of grey-green stiff leaves remained at the top, like old men whose hair had been plucked bare except for one patch on the crown. But with every hour of forward march, the palms thickened — from one here and there, to clusters of three or five, to an unbroken green wall along the riverbank. The green came back as remorselessly as it had vanished into the sand — only in reverse. Lu Zhu sat on the cart watching the palm line resolve on the horizon from a dashed line into a solid one, and what surfaced in his mind was his first sight of the Nile floodplain back on the West Bank: the memory of the land was far more reliable than human memory. The sand would retreat. The water would return. The palms would regrow. All you had to do was keep walking east.

At noon on the third day, the caravan crested a low saddle between hills, and Hawk-Wing Ferry spread out beneath them in full panorama.

It was a flourishing market town that had sprung up right at the desert’s edge — a continuous stretch of buildings extending half a li along the Nile bank, at least two dozen cargo vessels of varying sizes moored on the river, some berthed side-by-side at rough timber-pile docks, others simply beached on the mudflat for loading. For a man emerging from the wastes, the first sight of such a place produced a dizziness that verged on the unreal: your ears still carried the fine-grain rasp of sand, and before your eyes the river’s surface was already shattering light, white triangles of sail, the rhythmic shouting of dockhands — desert and market town pressed so close together they needed no transition zone, as though the world had been folded in half at this spot. Hapy stood up on the cart — his bad knee had stiffened during the days spent cramped in the desert, and he staggered as he rose — but the moment he steadied himself, he began counting the sails on the water. When he reached seventeen, two words fell out of his mouth: ”Not small.”

The column entered the town’s main road. Shops thickened on both sides. A rope-seller’s doorway — bundles upon bundles of freshly braided palm-fiber cord hung from the beams, the color a deep oiled brown gleaming under the sun. A pottery shop — clay water-jars stacked in a tower from largest to smallest, each wrapped in damp linen to keep cool, water beading at the linen’s hem to trace a dark wet line across the dirt road. A cook-stall selling dried fish and barley flatbread, stove-smoke and the scent of toasted grain rolling together into the street. A bare-chested smith at his doorway, striking a red-hot copper nail between two flint stones; with every blow, sparks burst from the nail’s head. It was the same trade as the repair depot at White River Ferry, except this smith’s flint edge was a finger-width shorter than the old smith’s there, so the sparks came denser, and each hammer-blow struck one more row of diagonal facets onto the copper nail’s face. User stopped and watched three blows — then nodded once at Hapy. Back in the days when they had spread gravel surplus side by side on the West Bank, three hammer-notes had become their shared classification code: the denser the impact surface, the higher the surplus-material strength grade. This was a material-distribution hub. Produce from the entire upper and lower river was re-sorted, re-priced, and re-loaded here. The air carried not only the river’s damp tang and the scorched aroma of palm oil, but the shouts of merchants haggling in half a dozen dialects — and the contrast against the desert’s silence was so sharp that Lu Zhu sat stunned on the cart for a beat before his mind caught up. The east bank here was low hills producing fine hardwood and palm-fiber cordage; the west bank, half a day’s walk upstream, had a cluster of sizable private quarries beyond temple jurisdiction. Meru had worked this trade route for over ten years. Hawk-Wing Ferry was the transit station he knew best — his first deal here had nothing to do with the current building-materials trade. Seventeen years ago, he had hauled salt from upstream on two donkeys to trade for riverbank gravel sieving screens. The buyer on that deal had been Sennufer — then a young warehouse clerk who had just used his first year’s wages to buy two derelict timber sheds and convert them into storage. The two men had crouched by the river eating a plate of grilled fish, and Meru had used a fish bone to draw a supply line on the tabletop — the first time he ever sketched the logistics concept of a trade-route transit hub in charcoal on a flat surface. Seventeen years later, the fish bone was a charcoal stick and the tabletop was the Alliance’s triangular banner, but the two men still crouched in the same posture when they drew lines. Three of Meru’s Alliance member-merchants were based in this town, specializing respectively in timber, cordage, and rough-stone resale.

The caravan had barely reached the town’s edge when Meru spotted a familiar triangular Alliance banner — the flag design he had settled on three months ago with the seven contracted merchants in the West Bank granary’s back courtyard: three horizontal bars for the three-month price guarantee, two vertical bars for the dual public-and-private supply rights. The flag hung from a timber beam of a riverfront warehouse — not Sennufer’s original two broken-down sheds, but a newly expanded large-scale timber-frame warehouse he had built beside the old ones, its frame members of premium hardwood from the east-bank hills, its beam-column joints fastened not with copper nails but with mortise and tenon. Old carpenters from Ptah’s family at White River Ferry had taught Sennufer that — each main beam-end was carved with three hidden slots, so that under riverbank wind-load the joints only locked tighter. Before the warehouse door stood four donkey carts loaded with building materials, the stone on them stacked in immaculate order, every layer padded with palm leaves — the White River Ferry loading standard: one course of stone, one course of palm leaf, so vibration on the road could not grind the gravel against itself. The driver of the foremost cart sat on the shaft chewing dried barley flatbread — his eating method was unmistakable: bite the rim in a circle first, then eat the center. He was the young quarry hand who had learned gravel-sorting from Hapy on the White River Ferry sandbank. Behind him, the cart bed held a sample slab bearing Ptah’s distinctive inspection-mark impression — the depth and angle of the anti-forgery pressing matched the contract original precisely; no hand but the same man’s could apply the same pressure at the same angle. One look told you: this was the first shipment of private-contract goods dispatched by Ptah of White River Ferry.

Meru swung off the cart and walked to the warehouse entrance. The interior was already stacked half-full — timber, cordage, rough stone. The timber was in two stacks: the left, hardwood beams and posts, each end wrapped in oil-soaked coarse linen to protect the mortise-and-tenon joints, sorted by length according to the West Bank centralized warehouse’s issue-slip specifications; the right, palm-timber secondary stock — short beams and cross-braces, all bound in pairs with palm-fiber cord, each bundle tagged with a White River Ferry classification limestone label. The stone zone occupied the rear third of the warehouse, piled a man’s height from the ground, sorted by grain size into five zones — the largest for foundation load-bearing gravel, the next for road paving, the third grade matching White River Ferry’s tertiary river-cobble for filling the channels between drainage platforms, the two finest grades reserved for mortar, to be supplemented once they reached a transit station with surplus lime. The moment User entered, he made straight for the far lower-left corner — the side-sorting angle of fine crushed filler — and fingered the simple gauge ruler inserted between each stone layer. The two stone-marks scored on the gauge confirmed that the crushed-stone grain sizing of every layer matched the classification standard: the first mark was the coarse-crush lower bound, the second the dividing line between medium crush and fine crush. The cordage zone hung against the wall — from the finest hemp twine to the heaviest palm-fiber towrope for ships, each grade tagged with an oiled-paper label bearing the rope-maker’s name and the oiling date in charcoal. Back at the West Bank Alliance, Meru had taught Sennufer: fiber-rope lot numbers must record not just thickness but also oiling date; oil-soaked fiber older than six months lost elongation, reducing load capacity by a tenth. The earliest oiling date on the wall labels was two months ago. Nothing was expired.

A stocky, grey-bearded old merchant came out to greet them — Sennufer himself, the branch head of the Hawk-Wing Ferry Alliance Chapter. His gait was distinctive: his left foot landed heavier than his right, his body tilting leftward by about half a fist’s width. It was not a leg problem — it was the habit of years crouching at the left front of his riverbank warehouse, inspecting the inspection marks on freshly arrived gravel. The quarry’s private-contract quality-inspection station was set up at the southeast corner of the warehouse, in the slant light; he squatted and rose twenty times a day or more, and a spot on his lower-left back muscle would emit a faint dry click at his first few steps upright — drier even than the shrine-keeper’s palm-wood splinter cracking in the cook-fire. He walked up to Meru, and behind him the warehouse door banged against its frame in the river wind — without looking back, he reached out and caught the bronze door-handle precisely. He had done that motion at least ten thousand times; he could not miss it with his eyes closed. The moment he opened his mouth, he was already hailing Meru as an old brother, his voice loud enough to startle half a dozen sand-swallows from the warehouse rafters.

”Old Meru — I started shifting goods before your letter even got here. The arrival date you wrote was the end of last month. I prepped the first batch four days ahead, had my own old donkey hauling a basket back from the quarry every day, counting down whether you’d show up early. Then you went and ran three whole days late — had me squatting in this warehouse staring at the stockpile with nothing to do. On the day it rained, I was so worried about the lime wicking damp I threw my own old back out three times checking it! But your first-station Chapter head at Front Field Ferry sent a rider over — said you’d stopped along the road to help three villages rebuild their houses, retrofit their official granaries, and open a riverbank quarry. So I knew you were running late because of real work. The past three days I’ve been pulling every cartload and re-inspecting it against your specification sheets — all cordage in new palm fiber, oil-tested for wet elongation, every course of rough stone with a hammer-tone sample slab inserted.”

Meru offered no pleasantries. He pulled from his ledger the contract Ptah of White River Ferry had issued — the one with the gravel test-hammer tone-slab attached — and handed it to Sennufer. ”Starting next station, write the standard directly into the contract. Every shipment comes with an accompanying stone-slab sample. If the inspector’s hammer-strike doesn’t match the tone, reject it on the spot.”

Sennufer took the contract and studied Ptah’s anti-forgery impression — the striations neither too deep nor too shallow, crossing Meru’s own Alliance impression at an irregular saddle-shaped angle. ”That bald Ptah of White River Ferry is even willing to press his own family stamp onto your paperwork. Looks like you really have pried open the back route on those temple quarry lines.”

”It’s more than White River Ferry. The Front Field Ferry Chapter head — after that rainstorm swelled his private well, he took the old copper piping originally used to cool the warehouse and re-soldered it into direct-connection joints for the clay water-pipes. Invented his own ’well-head locking ring’ — palm-elbow joints and copper-collar sleeves to stop leaks, uses less material than our clay pipes, doesn’t lose a drop. Now I need you to run through every remaining station’s supply dispatch along the line. From Hawk-Wing Ferry east to the next mountain stretch where the river narrows, there’s only one spot for replenishing drinking water in between — no quarry there, just scattered small households hauling gravel down from the eastern hills, uncoordinated. We need to lay out a temporary material yard there three days in advance.”

Sennufer spread his own hand-drawn line-supply dispatch draft across the wooden table — marked in different colors of charcoal powder, showing six categories of building material, their stock levels and replenishment intervals at every station. Lu Zhu stood beside the table, pushed aside the cross-section sketch of the Front Field Ferry Chapter head’s ”well-head locking ring,” and on another sheet of palm-paper began drawing the cross-section of the expanded river loading platform planned for Hawk-Wing Ferry: entry ramps at both ends, a capstan pivot-point in the middle — a rush-unloading configuration for riverbank operations that the West Bank centralized warehouse had never needed.

”Don’t put all the transfer points inside the warehouses. Your sub-stations need a temporary rush-unloading platform by the river at every interval. If upstream storms wash out the land route, this line can still move timber by floating it down the river.”

”For the platform’s pile foundations — how much gravel do you need from my side?” Sennufer was already flipping through his own stock list.

”Start with two cartloads per station, graded by Hapy’s standard — coarse crush for the road-base, medium crush for the bearing surface, fine crush to pack the pile-foundation gaps. From the next station onward, all temporary-platform gravel is to be self-sourced from the nearest riverbank — no more drawing from the central Alliance warehouse.” Lu Zhu annotated a layer on the drawing — a borrow-pit dug down from the riverbank cobble terrace. The method of sorting cobbles at this station’s riverbank had already been optimized from the experience of paving Sinu’s access road with surplus gravel: after every cartload of gravel was spread, the excess was no longer wasted; User graded it on the spot — coarse for the road-base, medium for the bearing surface, fine to fill the platform’s pile-foundation gaps. Three grades in one station, from the platform’s parking surface clear down to the pile base. No more empty back-hauls.

Sennufer’s warehouse door opened east, facing a crooked old palm tree bent by the river wind. Outside, Seb was measuring the drop gradient between the warehouse foundation’s outer edge and the riverbank’s steep slope with his palm-fiber ruler. On his lime-tablet he drew a semicircular crushed-stone interception band — this ring was not for holding back the river. It was to disperse the fine silt that stormwater would drive up the slope and back-flood into the warehouse floor. ”It’s not the foundation that gets wrecked. It’s the mud.”

By dusk, the transport foremen from every station’s merchant crews had all assembled. Sennufer did one thing first — he had a helper set up an old wooden table at the side of the warehouse, spread a scroll across it: a distribution map of the old camel-train rest-stops along the route, dozens of positions marked in charcoal ash — wild ground, hill crests, abandoned well platforms. ”Before you start fighting over carts and roads, look at this. This route doesn’t only have the official highway. Half these old camel stops are on unclaimed land — stick a flag in them and they’re usable. I’m not telling you to squat on wild ground. I’m telling you: resupply points don’t live on the government’s land deeds.” The six foremen gathered around the halt-point map. Someone recognized a dirt platform beside the old road he had traveled for twenty years — a hill crest. Decades of passing, and he had never once thought it could do more than rest his feet. It could unload cargo.

Then the six foremen sat down around a long wooden table dragged into Sennufer’s warehouse — the tabletop a single thick slab of hardwood cut from the east-bank hills, its surface layered with years of charcoal marks, copper-nail gouges, and weight-grid squares scratched in by someone’s fingernail. Every gouge was a record of transport dispatches laid down over years.

Six men, six sets of hands. The old cordage foreman from Hawk-Wing Ferry was a short man with stubby fingers and veins bulging on the backs of his hands — his hands looked less like a worker’s than like two living wrenches, every knuckle swelling outward in a small knob, the ligature marks of thirty years of palm-fiber braiding. From the moment he entered the warehouse to the moment he sat at the table, he never stopped rubbing his palms together — not nerves, but the itch of keratinized skin left empty when there was no fiber to wrap. The hardwood-transport foreman beside him was tall and gaunt, stoop-shouldered, years of riding donkeys to deliver long stock giving him a slight bow-legged walk — he said each step felt like bracing a timber beam, the floor becoming a floating raft on the river. This foreman did not talk much, but when he opened his mouth he hit the core of the matter — none of his statements ever ran past three sentences. The third local foreman ran the river transport — moving building materials from the ferry up and down to the sub-stations. He understood flow speed, water levels, and how wind seasons interfered with the drift angle of floating cargo; even the old boatmen who had run the river for years were willing to cross-check their figures against his.

The three foremen who had come from neighboring stations each carried their own urgencies. The upstream quarry foreman arrived with a bellyful of fire — his last batch of crushed stone had been washed out by the storm on the wild slope before the gorge mouth, a whole cartload gone, the gravel rolled into the river valley beyond recovery. He had called three extra hands and scoured the riverbank for two full days — the stones they brought back were not enough to pave half a loading ramp. His delivery deadline was three days past, and Sennufer’s dispatch chart still showed his column blank. ”It’s not me leaving it blank on purpose. It’s the sky not letting me fill it.”

The hardwood-transport foreman set down his cup of date-palm juice — the way he placed it was distinctive: not a thump but the motion of lowering a hardwood beam from shoulder to support, the cup-bottom meeting the table with a short, dull report. He spoke three sentences, each shorter than the last: ”The storm washed out crushed stone. Crushed stone can be quarried nearby. My hardwood cannot. Every old palm on the east-bank hills — cut one, lose one. Replace one, wait fifteen years. Your gravel, lost, you can pick it back off the riverbank. My hardwood, lost, I run another trip to the east bank. So I load first.” He pushed his cup forward half an inch — not a threat, just a signal that he was done.

The cordage foreman’s fingers scraped across the tabletop, rasp-rasp-rasp — his callused palm dragging over the years of charcoal dust sounded like coarse sandpaper on a plank. ”One of you says gravel lost can be picked back up. The other says hardwood can’t wait. But both your carts move on land. My goods move on water. Do you know the southeast wind is coming up on the river tomorrow morning? Once that wind hits, any flat-hulled boat turning upriver from downstream has to finish its capstan-line shift before sunrise. Half an hour late, and the whole boat’s drift line skews at least three cubits off. Three cubits — enough to ram a fully loaded cordage boat into the dock piles, soak every coil of palm-fiber rope on board. Wet palm-fiber rope, after oiling, has double the normal wet-elongation. Which of you is going to explain to the craftsmen at the three stations downstream of Hawk-Wing Ferry why their towropes went slack after half a month?”

The gorge-mouth foreman slapped his own knee — the force matching his volume, the water in his cup shivering a ring of fine ripples. ”You’re all fighting over the road. My stretch doesn’t even have a road. Between the next station’s gorge mouth and the first transit stop east of Hawk-Wing Ferry, a section of mountain road is cut — last season’s flash flood tore out a trench in the roadbed waist-deep. Men and donkeys can cross. Heavy carts can’t. My convoy has been stuck at the gorge mouth three days. Three days. Every dawn I have my workers unload the carts and spread the gravel into the trench. Spread one layer, the runoff from the mountain washes it away. Spread another, washed away again. Three days, six layers of gravel — and the trench bottom is still a mud ditch. I’m not fighting you for carts. I just need one of you to mark one extra midway reload point on the dispatch map, so my men at the gorge mouth can haul the gravel across the ditch without waiting for the heavy carts.”

The quietest of them — the acting foreman — chose this moment to speak. He laid his section of palm-fiber cord on the table, the clay anti-forgery plug at its end gone slightly soft from the warmth of his hand. He had been adjusting the clay’s plasticity with his thumb for a full half-hour, until the plug only began to deform three seconds after he released it. ”I’ve been waiting at the next transit station for two days. Every day seven men ask me when they can go back to work. I say soon, soon — one day of that, then another. On the third day I learned a new word. I don’t know what it’s called, but I know what it means: goods that are on the road but have no definite arrival time. After you’ve finished arguing about routes and priority, could you maybe tell me — what day should I tell my workers to start work?”

Five heads turned toward him at once. No one laughed. The hardwood foreman pulled back the cup of date-palm juice he had pushed forward, took a sip, and set it down again — this time the sound was gentler. The gorge-mouth foreman changed his knee-slap to a flat palm — no more hitting. The cordage foreman stopped rubbing his hands — his fingers at last lay quiet on the tabletop, the ligature marks in the lamplight looking less like scars than the braid-pattern of an old coil of rope.

Into that gap, Meru picked up his charcoal stick. He pulled Sennufer’s old camel-train halt-point map to the center of the table — those spots marked ”wild ground,” ”hill crest,” ”abandoned well platform” — they happened to scatter precisely along the line between Hawk-Wing Ferry and the gorge mouth. He was not proposing new way-stations. He was turning these already-existing rest-stops into nodes where a transport line could halt, unload, change donkeys, and take on water.

”No need to fight over priority. Between every two stations, put these old camel-stop points to use. Hill crests — stage water-bags. Wild ground — clear a material-drop surface. Abandoned well platforms — use them as donkey-swap points. A cart-head doesn’t need to return to the merchant station to reload. Reload on the spot. Swap donkeys on the spot. Take water on the spot. Your carts keep rolling. No one waits for anyone.”

Sennufer split the six men into three teams — one to move cordage and hardwood from Hawk-Wing Ferry east along the hills toward the next station, one to hold the warehouse for central dispatch, one to take crushed stone and lime to build the river loading platform Lu Zhu had designed. Meru did not interrupt a single argument. He stood at the table and listened through every mutually contradictory demand. He waited until the volume fell on its own. Then he reached out, picked up a charcoal stick, and on that halt-point map, along the direction from Hawk-Wing Ferry to the gorge mouth, drew lines connecting the existing ”hill crest,” ”wild ground,” and ”abandoned well platform” — not new roads, but the existing rest-stops linked into a relay sequence.

”By resupply interval. The distance between any two halt points is exactly what a donkey can cover under full load without resting. The cart-head reaches the hill crest, unloads half. Reaches the wild-ground flat, unloads the other half. The freed-up capacity takes on fresh cargo and keeps moving. No waiting — each runs its own interval.”

The foremen studied the map. The cordage foreman was the first to put charcoal to paper — on the second hill crest east of Hawk-Wing Ferry, he drew the symbol for a water-bag cache and added a line of small script beside it: ”This crest to be equipped with storage water-bags — for decades no one told me each return trip could carry one less water-load. Today I know.” He looked up at Meru, then added a suspension-rope diagram beside the water-bag — bag mouth facing down-slope, four palm-fiber ropes distributing the load. Meru saw how he had drawn it, reached over, and added a cross-brace marking at the rope-knot position: each bag suspended on four ropes to damp vibration. The old foreman nodded and incorporated the addition into his own route drawing.

The hardwood foreman did not touch the charcoal — but he pushed his cup of date-palm juice forward half an inch and said to Meru: ”This route of yours — I’ll run it once and see.” The gorge-mouth foreman picked up a split palm-leaf from the tabletop and pressed a dot at the gorge-mouth position on the halt-point map — he said from now on his convoy would no longer wait for heavy carts to cross the ditch. They would unload the gravel at the hill crest, pack it across the ditch on donkeys, and reload on the far bank. The acting foreman broke off a small piece of the now-soft clay anti-forgery plug from the end of his palm-fiber cord and pressed it onto the map at the position of his transit station — the clay left a shallow print on the paper, and he said that tomorrow he could go back and tell his workers: the materials are on the road, and the arrival time can be calculated from the intervals on this map.

In the bottom-right corner of the halt-point map, Meru wrote three characters in charcoal: ”SUPPLY LINE.” Then he laid the used charcoal stick across the paper’s edge and pushed it to the center of the table.

Sennufer, in his Chapter-head’s journal, matched every station’s shipment origin to its corresponding arrival time, donkey-cart turnaround reloading duration, and the cordage length needed for mid-route spare-material racks — at the end of each column of figures, in Meru’s manner, he pressed an anti-forgery impression of the Alliance palm-slab template. When he finished, he looked at it himself: the paper impression and Ptah’s stone-slab authentication mark nearly overlapped at the same issue position.

The caravan halted at Hawk-Wing Ferry for a full day and night. The scheduling conference ran through the daylight hours. At dusk, construction on the river loading platform Lu Zhu had designed officially began.

The site was a gently sloping mudflat southeast of the warehouse, where fishermen normally beached their catch — a natural mix of river mud and cobble about forty-odd cubits long, exposed at low water. The first team, quarry workers, had already wheeled three batches of gravel from the warehouse to the riverbank’s edge before full dark. Papi and his two companions laid out the pile-position lines in the fading but still translucent dusk light — using the water-level benchmark method he had applied at Toho, marking each pile position on a fourth distance-line parallel to the bank at the highest projected seasonal water level. The piles were hardwood, their heads not sharpened — Lu Zhu had said from the start, when drawing the plans: piles in soft mudflat do not need to be driven into the stratum; the pile-heads carry the level plane of the platform frame, with the load distributed below through a crushed-stone bedding layer — the same principle as the buttress-footing crushed-stone bedding. The hardwood pile-heads seated into horizontal mortise-and-tenon joints, sharing the same load-line logic as the crushed-stone undercourse beneath the West Bank warehouse’s transverse stepped foundation. A team of workers had the piles standing on their position markers before nightfall; around the framing, several men clustered to mound gravel, their silhouettes and the campfire’s glow reflecting off each other — coarse crush at the very bottom, medium crush grading at the sides, gap-filling demonstrated again by User beside the fire: after every course of gravel was compacted, the surplus was no longer discarded but spread by the same grain size into a non-slip footpath along the platform’s flank. Within half an hour, the loading platform’s base gravel course had been laid to the fourth scoring-line overlap on the leveling stakes — an efficiency and accuracy not far below what the West Bank warehouse’s back courtyard had achieved after its first days of磨合. Hapy said it was because User’s surplus-grading method had already been tested repeatedly at the sub-stations along the route.

The second team of stonemasons — half of Sennufer’s warehouse-holding crew — began dismantling the timber stacks inside the warehouse and hauling them out. The motion was different from the usual routine: no longer carrying one beam at a time on the shoulder, but using the relay-unloading method Meru had diagrammed at the scheduling conference: hardwood beams of three equal lengths pushed directly from stack to mid-way bracket over a copper-pin pivot face — two steps to dislodge, one shove to feed. Dismantle one batch, send one batch, frame one batch, unload one batch — four motions stacked between two stations into a continuous supply relay-chain. Kamon stood outside the warehouse, directing the vertical alignment of the platform’s frame posts on the mudflat with his long crowbar — every angle of his signal was micro-adjusted, the error never exceeding a single finger-joint.

The last team — the cordage foreman — worked at the tallest stack of palm-fiber rope outside the warehouse, trimming both ends of every new rope with a patching tool. To an onlooker it was just tidying rope-ends. In truth, it was his quality check: the wet-elongation rate of newly oiled fiber was determined by the splay-angle of the fibers at the cut end. After trimming each rope-end, he held the splayed fiber-flare up to an oil lamp — too wide an outward flare meant uneven oil absorption, and the rope would snap at a single point under load. He pulled out the rejects, tied them in a separate bundle, and had workers swap in two new coils — on an entire loading dock, ropes with substandard wet-elongation could be used for fixed anchor-pile tie-downs, but never as tow-lines.

After full dark, no fewer than twenty oil lamps burned along the Hawk-Wing Ferry riverbank — the yellow glow spilling from the warehouse, the waterproof oil-boxes clipped between the loading platform’s posts, the small collision-avoidance lanterns hung from the cargo boats’ masts on the river. Three colors of light tangled together in the water’s reflection, a rippling scatter of brightness. By the dock, a row of riverside stall-sheds included a small stand that served date-palm juice to night-shift workers — under its oil lamp, several young men who had just finished unloading three batches of gravel were already asleep against the timber piles, a coil of half-knotted palm-fiber rope still wrapped around their legs, their hands not yet loosened from the cord-ends. The new acting foreman — the one who studied Ptah’s clay anti-forgery impressions — crouched on the riverbank, building a miniature donkey-swap rack model out of gravel chips. He said he would take it to the next station and use it to explain the new supply-line map to his village’s workers. Just as he placed the last gravel pillar, a cargo boat on the river was making its turn, and the bow lantern swept across, lighting up his model for one moment — illuminating a tiny reload platform propped between two wood splinters on the rack’s middle tier, its width-to-height proportion matching the cross-section Lu Zhu had drawn on the table that morning.

The caravan departed at first light. They had halted a full day and night. Loading and unloading had been re-sorted within the column according to the new supply-interval scheme — every cart now carried not only its own cargo but a small batch of spare gravel for mid-route material corners, two bundles of cordage, and one pack of insect-repellent herbs. On Meru’s cart shaft hung an extra coil of oiled palm-fiber rope selected from the new shipment — the end of every strand bearing an Alliance sub-station’s anti-forgery impression stone, the stone-to-rope connection clasped with a copper-collar locking ring of the Front Field Ferry Chapter head’s own invention. It had begun at the lid of a private well, passed through riverbank gravel, narrow-window granaries, abandoned-shrine manuscript pages, and Sinu’s seepage cutoff channel, and now it linked to the first donkey-swap point east of the Hawk-Wing Ferry warehouse.

As the caravan pulled out of town, a cargo boat loaded with new cordage and hardwood was weighing anchor on the river, bound downstream. The hardwood posts of the riverbank loading platform stood fully revealed in the morning light — the platform was not yet complete, but its pile-foundation gravel course, compacted dense through User’s surplus grading and Hapy’s gradation correction, would not collapse even if every brace were removed. Sennufer stood at the warehouse door. He was not seeing them off. He was drawing a new inventory classification chart for the skeleton crew taking over from him: timber stack positions, cordage wall-hanging zones, gravel grain-size zones, and donkey-swap temporary material corners, their interrelationships mapped in a bird’s-eye view. The drawing method was the same one Mery used when compiling his official-granary comparison chart on the cart: columns running vertically, rows cross-referenced against each station’s material-supply nodes. Now that the merchant route had a shared distribution standard, the sub-stations were no longer drawing maps with scattered symbols — they were using the column method. What Sennufer was drawing was no longer one man’s warehouse. It was the master assembly drawing for the entire downstream supply line, extending from Hawk-Wing Ferry toward the new capital.

This supply line was not an official road — but on the official road, the ones hauling materials were temple corvée runners; on this road, the ones hauling materials, every step of the way, were ordinary merchants who daily spread gravel under their own houses. It had no official name, no government stamp, no divine sanction — only anti-forgery impression stones, young masons sleeping beside a date-juice stall with their hands still gripping their ropes, and a newly promoted acting foreman crouched on a riverbank building a model out of gravel chips. Every man’s handful of crushed stone was packing the foundation deeper into the earth beneath his own feet.

(End of Chapter 06)
