Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 33: Chapter 9: Old Comrades Block the Way --- Veteran Artisans Defect on the Road

There was no clear divide between the seventh and eighth day on the gravel plain. The difference was not in sunrise or sunset -- it was in the ground beneath their feet, which changed from one kind of gravel to another. When they had left Red Rock Slope, the road surface had been paved with black iron-magnesium gravel polished glossy by wind and sand, every pebble angular, crunching underfoot, the wooden wheels of the carts leaving deep white scars where the stones fractured to expose fresh cross-sections. By dusk of the seventh day, the black iron-magnesium gravel had thinned out, replaced by a pitted, brownish siliceous gravel -- lighter, more brittle, its surface riddled with microscopic hollows carved by long-term wind erosion, like shrunken honeycombs. The edges of this stone had been rounded by abrasion; it no longer crunched underfoot but gave a muffled puff, like stepping on a dried clod of mud. The ground color shifted from black to brown -- a sign that the strata beneath them had transitioned from igneous bedrock to sedimentary. Further east, the sedimentary layer would grow thicker and thicker until it buried the bedrock entirely, becoming the soft mud stratum beneath the new capital’s wilderness -- the stratum that would make Lu Zhu furrow his brow for an entire night.

When the caravan set out on the eighth morning, every sensory detail of the semi-desert zone had shifted simultaneously. The air was no longer the pure, scorching wind of the deep gravel plains, so dry it could rasp the nasal lining raw -- here it began to carry scent. Not the moist scent of vegetation, but an intensely dry, mineral-fragment-laden dust: gusts sweeping in from the distance lifted fine silt from vast expanses of bare soil, suspending it less than half a man’s height above the ground in a low-hanging dust veil. The veil was barely visible to the naked eye -- but standing on a rise and looking into the distance, a faint yellow, blurred soft edge would appear along the horizon, as if someone had traced the far skyline with an extremely pale ochre charcoal. Kamon walked in the middle of the column -- his stride had shortened by roughly half a palm’s width since entering this transitional zone, not from fatigue, but because the soil changes visible to his naked eye forced him to register every contact surface his foot touched. Old quarrymen possessed an almost animal instinct -- crystal grain size, the sand-to-soil ratio, the color of crushed stone under sunlight -- microscopic differences that ordinary people would look at and never remember could make an old quarryman slow his pace without thinking, and in the stone-classification atlas of his mind, file this new soil type under ”unstable transitional layer.”

Seb and Kes walked at the very front of the column. Along the way Seb had been comparing the slope orientation of the micro-terrain on either side -- the ground here tilted southward from north at an extremely gentle gradient of roughly half a finger-width per hundred paces, a slope too slight to affect walking, but in drainage-system design it meant the natural convergence of rainwater runoff would flow from north to south -- he would need to annotate the lower left corner of his drawings with this micro-tilt issue that any future settlement’s vertical drainage would have to confront. Kes, meanwhile, was wrestling with the shrub species beside the road -- the shrubs here were no longer camel-thorn but something he did not recognize, a low bush with exceptionally thorny rhizomes, tiny leaves, and branches of a dull purplish gray. Unable to name it, he gave it a temporary label in his head: ”Iron-Hand Shrub” -- because dragging his fingers backward against its branches felt like being scraped by coarse iron grit. He sketched the root distribution of this shrub onto his vegetation-root map and connected it with dotted lines to his deductions about possible aquifer levels beneath grain-storage wells.

Water remained desperately scarce. Several private wells marked on Meru’s station map had ceased to exist in this transitional stretch -- not dried up, but abandoned, their mouths buried beyond recognition by drifting sand and gravel, impossible to draw from. At noon on the seventh day, the entire company replenished their water at an abandoned herdsmen’s encampment -- all that remained were a few thin tent-pole stubs canted by the wind, but behind the camp, a natural depression held a thin layer of shallow groundwater pooled from the previous rainy season. The water was the color of weak coffee, with a high proportion of dissolved organic matter, but after emergency sampling, Mery determined that adding a palm-fiber filter mat and letting it settle for several hours would render it usable. That afternoon, standing before the remnant pole-stubs of the abandoned camp, he made a notation on his指标表 in red charcoal: ”Interim measure -- water source filtration -- organic suspension layer.”

Hapy stopped when the caravan crossed a dry ancient riverbed -- it was very early on the eighth morning. The riverbed floor could hardly be called a riverbed -- the gravel running through it had been cemented as though smoothed by a muddy hand -- but in the bed’s course he spotted a discontinuous band of pale yellow fine-clay strata. The granular texture of that pale yellow fine clay transmitted an exceedingly low, astringent slickness when rubbed between fingertips -- entirely unlike ordinary river mud, which was coarse with sand. He rubbed it several times, soaked a pinch in water, and the clod did not dissolve -- it was clay-rich soil with high montmorillonite content. Its inherent viscosity was sufficient to replace some proportion of waterproof clay binder in mortar. He scooped a small sample into a jar, stowed it in his specimen pouch, and recorded the coordinates of this dry riverbed on his limestone tablet -- referenced to Meru’s nearest well as a base point, the same stratum could be re-located within roughly an hour’s walk east-by-northeast.

Near noon on the eighth day, a cluster of low limestone buttes appeared on the distant horizon. These were not isolated crags beside a riverbed, but the residual protrusions left after prolonged erosion of a continuous limestone basement layer, their shapes irregular -- some like towers hacked off at mid-shaft, others like great stone slabs tilted and wedged diagonally into the earth. The caravan halted beneath these buttes -- not to rest.

The caravan stopped beneath the low limestone buttes for half a watch -- not to rest, but because the road ahead was blocked by a group of men who had never appeared on any map.

The moment the caravan halted, the several dozen people from front to rear fell silent almost in unison. Not panic -- it was the particular silence of artisans encountering an unknown human obstruction in unfamiliar terrain, akin to facing a stone slab whose surface looked sound but whose interior might be riddled with joints: until the other party’s stance, weapons, and threat level to the worksite could be assessed, experienced craftsmen would make no drastic gesture that might aggravate the fracture. Lu Zhu straightened up beside the cart. He did not rush forward -- he simply threaded his gaze through the gaps between the front-rank artisans’ shoulders toward the cluster of figures at the foot of the limestone buttes. From their silhouettes and postures, he had already judged that these men were not soldiers, not tax collectors, not quarry foremen. Their stances were the asymmetrical construction-worker’s stance of long-term unilateral exertion -- thighs rotated outward, knees drawn inward, one shoulder hitched higher than the other. Any stonemason who had spent more than three years on a quarry site, even at two hundred paces, could read the geological origin of that stance at a glance from a figure’s outline. But they were not on his planned route, not in Meru’s map supplements -- this was an encounter out of nowhere, and these men had come on foot.

The one leading them was not Nekhem’s envoy, not a low-ranking temple priest -- he was one of six old stonemasons dressed in work tunics. Their coarse linen kilts had been bleached by wind and sun to a rough gray-white. They carried chisels on their shoulders, their straw sandals worn to shreds -- they had clearly been walking for at least two or three days. The one walking at the very front, an old man whose right knee splayed outward -- an old injury from years of one-sided exertion on the quarry face, making his gait a forward step followed by a half-step retreat -- Kamon recognized that walk from far off.

The man at the front of the six was called Mehptah -- the senior quarryman from Thebes’ First Quarry. Twenty years ago, Kamon had laid the foundation for a side-hall wall with him on a Memphis worksite. Back then Mehptah had been the head quarryman of the stonemasons’ workshop there; before Kamon’s apprentices had learned to grip a chisel, Mehptah could already split a six-cubit granite block along the cliff-face jointing into four gate-cut directions. All six old stonemasons bore the same weathering. The road from Thebes was far too long -- six days on foot, crossing the cultivated green belt of the middle Nile, barren mountain passes, stretches of rubble hills, and the outer fringe of the gravel plains. The soles of their straw sandals had been worn down to less than half their original thickness; toes poked through the torn openings, toenails embedded with rust-red stone dust that washing could not remove -- stained by the ferrous sands of the gravel plains. A lean, short old man -- Kamon recognized him as Beken, the senior stone-sawyer from the northern quarry outside Thebes -- had a thick sheepskin wrapped around his arm, its surface raised in uneven hard patches where sweat could not escape the skin, pressed tight against the inner forearm, a chain effect of sun-dehydration along the road. Beside Beken stood another gaunt, tall old stonemason called Enh, who specialized in adjusting the slope datum for measuring stone. His eyelids had been repeatedly assaulted by the sand-scoured sun, the corners of his eyes still visibly bloodshot -- the capillaries dilated by windblown grit, recovering with excruciating slowness.

The two middle-aged men flanking Mehptah -- one shouldered a long-handled stone-splitting hammer, the other carried a bag of brass angle-squares and crude charcoal slate tablets brought from home. The hammer-bearer was Ensu; from the set of his shoulders one could tell he was the power-hammer man who worked the quarry’s lowest tier, squaring off the foundation rough blocks, though his face looked older than other stonemasons his age, an oblique scar below his earlobe left from a shattered stone fragment. The stonemason carrying the brass squares was Pah, the final checkpoint man responsible for verifying wall-foundation dimensions on site -- Pah’s jawline was hard and tight, his thin lips parched white; he had not spoken the entire way, merely cradling the brass angle-square against his chest to shield it from knocks by grit and gravel. Walking at the rear, the youngest stonemason, was called Papi -- his left hand bore multiple abrasions from crushed stone, the fingers wrapped in strips of cloth whose original color could no longer be discerned. He was responsible for campfire kindling and mortar delivery during the two daily watches, morning and evening, and also for which direction the handle of the six men’s single old bronze pot pointed along the road. At this moment, his already cracked lips were silently pressing the arc of that pot’s rim -- the mark of six consecutive days without a full meal.

Mehptah stopped twenty paces from Kamon. He did not come closer -- he lowered his chisel from his shoulder, planted its tip in the earth, then bent at the waist and offered Kamon the level-waist bow, a gesture almost never seen between old stonemasons -- not flattery, but penitence. This chisel was the tool he had used to carve the last relief panel on the side wall of the Theban temple’s annex hall; the panel’s ram’s-head motif had been ordered reworked three times by the works overseer, and the third time, he had said he was done.

”Master Kamon -- the six of us left Thebes and walked nearly six days. We heard you were leading the guild’s column east, so we searched all the way. We’re not willing to keep working under the old priesthood’s system anymore -- behind the scenes in Thebes, everything they do is about seizing other people’s lifelines to stuff their own purses. We old creatures did work for them before -- but we never harmed anyone -- and we know in our hearts what we’ve done to your people. The craft is still in our chisels -- we want to follow you and work.”

Kamon stood where he was, looking at him for a long time. Mehptah was a senior man under whom he had handled stone in his youth -- yet now the old stonemason standing before him looked barely ten years his senior, the gullies on his face scoured by the flying sand of the road until he was as weathered as the russet sand-and-gravel ridges at their backs. Of the five old stonemasons behind him, two carried those heaviest long-handled stone-splitting hammers -- tools made exclusively for dressing the coarse foundation stone at a quarry’s bottom tier; men accustomed to such hammers had wrist strength far exceeding that of ordinary wall-masons. But they held the hammers now not in the grip for splitting stone -- the handles were reversed in their hands, the hammerheads turned toward themselves, meaning they had not come to strike stone.

While Kamon stood motionless, the activity inside him churned far more fiercely than his outward silence. He stood before these limestone buttes in the semi-desert, facing a group of stonemasons who had once enjoyed stable grain rations and unassailable security within Thebes’ old order -- men who, in the system he had fled, had been colleagues standing on a different boundary from his own. But now they had walked six days, their straw sandals worn through, their lips cracked -- regressed from ”executors of the old system” to ”wandering artisans with nothing left but their craft and their tools.” From the moment Mehptah bowed, Kamon’s heart was pulled between two parallel lines of sight. One line of sight was the past -- Mehptah standing on the temple annex worksite, a six-cubit granite block in his hands, the full apparatus of worksite regulations and priestly overseer authority arrayed behind him. The other line of sight was what stood before him now -- this old quarryman who had set his chisel down, bowing at the waist above the frayed openings of sandals worn by six days of grit, balancing his stance on a knee bearing thirty years of old injury. This second line of sight stirred in him a burden that did not belong to him -- these old stonemasons had come to seek refuge with the guild only after the order to which they had belonged shattered; for the guild to accept them meant accepting, along with them, all the broken oaths of loyalty left in the wreckage of the old order. The six of them coming over was not merely an inflow of hands and a transfer of techniques -- it also carried the ruined remnants of Theban registry ledgers, and the identity verification that might follow once the new capital encampment had thoroughly eliminated unknown embedded lines. The guild did not shield people from official inspection, but neither did it use a person’s past as a tool -- this meant he could provide no guarantee, but he could offer a measure of professional dignity within the bounds of safety. Back on the West Bank he had told all the artisans, ”The guild does not verify origins -- it only verifies the tools in your hands.” Facing these six old stonemasons who had struck their own names from the registry, that sentence weighed heavier than it ever had.

Kamon did not answer at once. The several dozen guild artisans behind him had all fallen silent. Not one of them said ”yes” or ”no” on his behalf. Mekat stood beside the cart, his short pry-bar unlashed from his waist, both hands gripping the handle -- not on guard, but in the particular silence of an old quarryman. After his dismissal from Thebes he had heard of Mehptah -- the men above the stone-dispatch tier cursed him as ”too stiff in the bone, at odds with the temple.” Now this ”stiff-boned” old quarryman stood before him, not as an opponent -- but as a deserter seeking refuge.

”Before you left Thebes -- did you know how many men Nekhem has planted in the new capital?”

”In the scribal office, he planted two old clerks. One of them is missing two fingers on his left hand -- the index and middle fingers, gone from the second joint up, smashed by falling stone at the quarry years ago and never healed right; he amputated them himself with a chisel. There are also three low-ranking priests, supposedly inserted into the preliminary works crew’s artisan registry last autumn -- by what procedure, I don’t know, but I remember the dossiers the scribal office pulled. The clerk managing those dossiers would press an extra clay seal onto the dossier flap every day before leaving -- his personal mark, not an official seal. Whenever he pressed that extra seal, there was one more name inside the dossier.”

”Would you recognize these men -- if they stood across from you?”

”The one missing two fingers on his left hand, I’ve seen twice. Once delivering dossiers to the quarry for sign-off; the other time -- he was standing beside the old pottery kiln outside Thebes’ north gate, talking to someone, his back to me, but he was steadying himself against the kiln’s flue opening with his maimed hand while waiting for the kiln-master to change the door, and the dust on the flue opening imprinted the outline of those two missing fingers. I remember it. The other three I’ve never seen face to face -- but I remember the exact timing of the scribal office pulling those dossiers: the eighth month of last autumn, three consecutive days, each day’s flap bore that extra clay seal of his. The retrieval direction for that period was the new capital’s preliminary works crew.”

Kamon turned his head and glanced at Lu Zhu. Lu Zhu stood beside the cart, having offered no opinion from start to finish -- he was simply observing the stances of the five old stonemasons behind Mehptah: they stood in a row, not huddled together, each man still separated from the next by half a cart’s width, every one of them having lowered his tool from his shoulder -- not relinquishing their craft, but relinquishing their guard.

”Your names are still in the Theban temple’s artisan registry -- if you’re screened out at the new capital, the guild cannot shield you from official identity checks,” Lu Zhu said.

”We know. Before leaving Thebes, we struck our own names -- each man drove a flat-chisel mark into the corner of his own registry page. Now there’s nothing on that ledger but the destroyed seal-marks of chisel blows.”

Lu Zhu nodded, turned his face toward Kamon, and said one sentence: ”The chisel marks on their hammerheads carry the same force as the chisel marks on your stone.”

Kamon exhaled. He stepped forward and studied the faces of the five old stonemasons behind Mehptah one by one -- then he spoke: ”The guild accepts you -- not because I have forgiven the past, but because from now on, every mark you leave on a wall for the guild will no longer be work done for gods. The rules for entering the guild are the same for everyone -- registry, craft-demonstration bench, palm-fiber measuring cord, not one thing can be skipped. If you can leave your signature and the blade-profile mark of your own chisel on the registry, then starting tomorrow -- the hammer in your hand is no longer a tool for delivering work to a god.”

One by one, the six old stonemasons pulled from their tool pouches the scrap-cloth rolls or pottery shards they used to register their names -- some had written their name and all their trade abbreviations directly onto the base of a slate slab in their bag with charcoal. Mehptah walked to Hapy’s cart and from the bottom of his waist-pouch produced half a long-oval rough stone slab, polished exceptionally flat, on which a semi-circular mark had already been incised with a chisel tip.

”These are all the blade-profile marks I’ve made over the years for different opening angles -- each one corresponds to a specific grain-direction angle of the stone. Measure them with the palm-fiber cord -- if every arc falls within one finger-width of true, I’ll report to the material yard this afternoon for the supplementary material test.”

The guild roster was not a sheet of paper. The guild’s roster was something Mekat and Papi had designed together before departing from the West Bank -- a sheet of palm-fiber paper folded into a six-panel fan, each panel divided by a separator line into sections for the name zone, the tool-mark zone, the trade-specialty zone, and the date-of-entry zone. Unfolded, the fan spread flat across a cart footboard; its six panels刚好 accommodated all the anticipated new artisan slots between the starting point and the new capital. Now, the six self-stricken old Theban stonemasons stepped to the cart in turn and signed the fan-panels -- every step of this process, every man’s movements, every signing implement, was different.

The first to sign was Ensu -- his tool was the largest and most conspicuous of the six: from the cart’s tool case he took out a hefty rough stone slab used for mine-face markings, nearly half a forearm’s length. He inserted its sharp tip into the corresponding name grid on the roster, pressed down with the force of his arm, and in one continuous drive from top to bottom carved his signature without a single crooked stroke, the stone-groove shavings falling neatly along the slab’s edge. When he lifted the slab from the roster, the stone dust drifting from the fan-panel’s surface rose in a thin cloud -- the strength of a long-handle hammer man.

The second to sign was Beken. The tool he used was the only small-blade chisel he had brought from Thebes -- the blade was thin, capable of both carving and scraping. He took perhaps a dozen light returns of the chisel edge to complete every stroke of his name, pausing after each letter to reposition for the next. Between carving characters, he spread out on the ground the old sheepskin he always carried and removed a set of blades from the crevices of its inner hide one by one, airing them in the sunlight -- the sheepskin was ancient but had stiffened like a plank from dehydration. After confirming the blades were rust-free, he turned the finished pottery-shard panel toward Kes, seated nearby, wanting him to check whether the angle of his signature matched the conventions of worksite marking. Kes took the shard and on its reverse side drew a sectional schematic of the outer arc of Beken’s signature in shield-diagram format, then handed it back: ”The discharge direction of your signature’s stroke pressure can stay consistent with the standard cart markings without drift -- you just need to rein in the upward side of the brush-tip considerably.”

The third to sign was Pah. He carried nothing in his pouch that could produce an independent signature -- his work was not carving; his tools were a brass angle-square and the complete archive of every wall-foundation dimensional datum in his mind. He walked to the cart, and from the edge of his apron removed a short length of finely worn-down limestone rod -- a makeshift stylus he had ground over the years for making temporary marks when checking foundation-wall dimensions on site. He held this stylus and wrote on the roster an abbreviation of several characters -- not his full name, but his trade code plus his nickname. The first mark he laid down was as light as a fingertip brushed across a wall leaving a faint powder trace, yet its outline was strikingly clear. After finishing the abbreviation, he added a numerical sequence for the longitudinal shrinkage of a wall foundation after rain scour -- a shorthand externalization of his entire body of knowledge on wall-foundation calibration. Having signed, he did not leave the cart; instead he drew from inside his tunic that brass angle-square and, on an exposed face of native limestone beneath the buttes, struck a bedding-plane gauge line -- not because anyone demanded he verify anything, but because he simply could not resist taking a datum measurement against the natural plane of limestone every time he arrived somewhere new. After measuring, he stepped back and dusted the thin layer of limestone powder accumulated on the angle-square onto the fan-panel -- the signature thus bore his work stamp.

The fourth to sign was Papi -- far younger, but his accrued years of service brought from Thebes were not short, and on top of six days without proper food, his hands and feet were at their weakest. He could write, but what he brought forward was neither a charcoal stick nor a chisel blade -- it was a sliver of fine quartz he had picked up in a dry riverbed and sharpened into a makeshift pointed shard along the road. He advanced the quartz shard one grid at a time, lifting it half a grid between strokes, his eyes narrowed to slits, vigilant that each character’s finishing stroke not be gouged askew by the shard at the extremely low position of the horizontal line. His left hand was still wrapped in rags, so he pushed the roster’s fan-panel flat atop a stone to the left-front of his position, nearly sprawling prone to use his right hand to steady the quartz shard, the tips of his fingers already trembling. It took him nearly twice as long as the others to carve out his short name, and when he finished, the last joints of his fingers were blanched from the quartz shard’s repeated abrasion, the pale patches stung sour-hot by sweat. He lifted his head after carving the name and realized that several guild artisans in the column were looking down at him -- not mocking him. It was that particular silence of old artisans watching a young artisan’s earnestness, the same look Mekat had worn on the West Bank after Seb had driven his first camp post.

The last to sign was Enh -- but he did not go straight to signing. First he circled to the side of his long-handled great chisel and used a small coarse-linen cloth, perpetually oil-sheened, to wipe the chisel haft clean. Then he slipped away from the crowd, walking behind a solitary boulder -- not to hide, but to find a place where no one would notice him, where he could lower his voice and speak a sentence, barely audible, toward the chisel’s edge. He pressed his thumb against the chisel tip, turning the cutting edge toward himself, lightly pressing a circle of flesh to confirm the edge had no cracks. Only then did he reach into the deepest part of his woven-grass sack and remove a small, perforated, translucent green mineral -- a thumbnail-sized specimen of turquoise, the only piece he had kept for himself over decades in the quarry, the one he treasured most. He pressed this turquoise onto the roster to stamp, in place of a signature, a tiny stone perforation -- no larger than the tip of a little finger, but enough to certify to himself that these six fan-panels could never be reclaimed by any temple.

”Material inspection note: rebound plane does not exceed the grain-strike line -- passed.” Kamon examined the two oblong cobblestone sample-boards the old stonemasons had brought and pressed this line in charcoal onto the base of each. Then he turned his face toward all six newly registered old artisans and said: ”This afternoon I will enter each of your individual blade-profile angle specimens into the material yard’s standard sample-verification wall cabinet. From today onward -- the cutting edges of your chisels belong to the guild.”

Hapy said nothing. He turned the slab toward the slanting midday sun and squinted at the concentric rings of markings -- aside from the old fisherman’s water-ripple arcs, this was the first time he had seen a stonemason turn fracture-plane grain direction into a measurable angular quantity that could be replicated. Mehptah, for his part, looked down at the chisel in his own hand, his thumb gliding across the three deep grooves on the handle -- the motion reminded Kamon of Taha, but with this difference: Taha’s grooves had been worn by the web of his thumb, whereas Mehptah’s grooves were left by unrelieved force during stone-splitting; each time the stone’s grain direction shifted, his thumb naturally drifted upward -- in thirty years, it had never lost its grip.

After counting out the arcs, he added one remark: ”But before entering the material yard, I need to hammer the curved rust-mark off this stone-splitting hammer’s face first -- what this mark carries isn’t craft, it’s the unjust beating I took back then.” Usher, standing nearby, went to a cart and brought back a small piece of red sandstone -- the finest red sandstone specimen he himself had knocked off at Red Rock Slope, hard of grain, its surface flat and bone-dry. Mehptah took it, turned it over, studied it, and drew it back and forth across the curved hammer face with direction three times -- the first two passes to remove rust, the last a light counter-tap in the original bend’s direction, the iron’s ring deeper now than before. He turned the hammer face over to show Usher -- the scar was still there, but the hammer back no longer canted.

”That red sandstone of yours is harder than it ought to be. If you leave it on a high spot in the storage yard under slanting sunlight without moving it -- in less than half a year the surface will bloom with chalky white spots. Put it under the straw-mat layer on the left side, let it absorb some ground-coolness, extend its gravel-preservation period.” Usher carried the red sandstone back and placed it on the left side of the low straw-mat layer in the material yard according to his instructions -- then noted on his own limestone tablet: ”Red Sandstone -- sun exposure point-frosting -- gravel-preservation period requires ground-cooling.” Mehptah watched the boy’s notation movements for a long time, then turned to another old stonemason and said: ”Back in the temple, what they taught us was either to completely ignore instructions or to lay the straw mat on backward. This boy writes characters with more sense than our old habits.”

Of the remaining five old stonemasons, two each produced an oblong cobblestone sample-board, both faces marked with different angle-opening cuts. When they had passed White River Ford, they had split the same cobblestone into three pieces -- the front face for load-bearing padstone specifications, the reverse for the thickness of moisture-barrier gravel chips -- the hammer-impact faces on the two flanks respectively embodying the stress textures of different-diameter coarse screening. Each man had scored two straight bars onto his sample stone with the finest chisel edge: one following the cobble’s grain-strike line, the other cutting against the bedding plane. Before White River Ford, these two old stonemasons had never seen the standard sample stone for verifying gravel by hammer-tone, yet the complete set of self-marked oblong sample boards they had brought -- whether in front-face blade-offset angle or reverse-face bedding stress-line angle -- conformed entirely to the three-batch material grading standards the West Bank quarry had used up to the present. After inspecting them one by one, Kamon added the same-format material-inspection note in charcoal onto those two cobblestone sample-boards: ”Rebound plane does not exceed the grain-strike line -- passed.” These were the only two words he spoke during that midday instruction -- passed.

After the six men had signed the roster, Kamon arranged for Mekat to lead them to the material yard to familiarize themselves with the guild’s stone-grading standards and tool-calibration procedures. Mekat handed his short pry-bar to Mehptah -- the bar’s handle was bound with four loops of the palm-fiber cord Mekat had brought from Thebes -- and told him to use it to split open a White River Ford cobblestone. ”I’ve never tried following a joint plane with someone else’s pry-bar -- if the first try goes off, don’t laugh.” Mehptah took the pry-bar, struck three times following the stone’s bedding texture -- the first blow to test the feel, the second to seat the split, the third following the first blow’s joint plane to lever the slab free in one even piece. The cross-section was clean. Mekat’s lips parted -- he suddenly realized that these words were no longer meant for only their own circle. He had spent half his life in Thebes saying ”I’ve never tried,” and had never waited long enough for someone to hand him another man’s tool.

The interaction between new and old artisans, once the signing was complete, dispersed naturally into every corner of the material yard and beside the carts. There was no formal introduction process -- old quarrymen never stood on ceremony; the sole way to judge whether a new artisan was reliable was to have him pick up a tool, tackle a block of stone, and let the tool and the stone lay bare thirty years of foundation in full sunlight within three exchanges.

Ensu lifted his long-handled stone-splitting hammer and walked to a large limestone block prepared in the material yard. The haft was a full circumference thicker than the pry-bar in the young artisan’s hands beside him, its surface crisscrossed with grooves punched out by decades of the hammer body recoiling against stone. He laid the palm of his left hand against the rear of the haft, shifted it about five finger-widths to the right, and muttered to himself: ”Sand-lime, oblique jointing, hammer high and light below.” Then his hammer traced an arc of minimal amplitude down from above his head -- a single blow, and the stone split along the joint-plane periphery into a flat slab on one face -- the entire motion was as if he had cut the hammer tip into the stone’s crevice and levered it open with bare hands. ”Force was too light.” He set the hammer down and said this to the young artisan standing nearby. The young artisan turned to fetch the next sample stone, puzzling as he walked whether those four words were self-deprecating consideration for others or a genuine judgment -- from Ensu’s tone, he found no trace of showmanship.

Beken, by contrast, did not touch a tool at all. He sat down beside several bundles of palm-fiber cord at the edge of the material yard and laid his stiffened old sheepskin across his knees -- not to work material, but to trace over the original wear-lines on the hide with the fine brass needle he carried, inscribing one after another of the splitting-chisel guide-lines he habitually used. This was, in truth, his tool sheath, but after half a lifetime of use, the lines inside and outside the sheath had passed from meaninglessness into a reversed-arc direction for the protective edge of every chisel that he alone remembered. A young artisan named Hap came over from the carts with an unmarked White River Ford cobblestone, hoping Beken would inspect it. Beken merely placed the cobblestone against the knee where he was wrapping his sheepskin, his thumb sliding along the stone’s internal line, his eyes narrowed at the corners, still reddened by grit, and said: ”This return line is off by half a millimeter -- not accurate. Tell the fellow making the scoring cut to aim his blade edge at the extension line of the stone’s return layer, not at the layer itself -- if you aim at the layer, you’ll pull the line off. Watch the line, don’t face the layer.” He handed the stone back and continued stitching the hide. Hap returned after half a watch -- this time, after adjusting his approach according to Beken’s eye, the return-layer line ran true against the extension line without error.

Pah was examining the cross-sectional drawing Kes had made of the humus-layer foundation drainage bedding -- he studied this drawing with astonishment, because in more than twenty years of doing rough wall foundations in Thebes he had never seen anyone grade the particle sizes of broken brick and potsherd to this degree of precision. He pulled the section closer and laid his brass angle-square, polished by many years of use, across the drawing to check a dimension -- the spacing between the drainage-well position and the wall base: the drawing annotated a depth of roughly half a forearm. Pah measured against his own knee with the angle-square, then crouched and used his heel to scuff out a foundation starting point lower than the plan drawing, and said to Kes: ”If the humus-layer thickness under this plot of ground is half a finger higher than your annotation, your drainage-well depth will have to follow it downward -- after sinking, the well’s base slab will sit near the upper boundary of the soft mud layer, so you’ll need an extra layer of limestone to press down on the soft layer. Add a limestone pad on the settlement allowance.” Kes transcribed his words verbatim onto the lower-left corner of his grain-well structural drawing -- not because he lacked experience, but because all his designs up to now had operated according to known humus-layer patterns; Pah’s supplement added an exceedingly important unknown variable: if the humus layer actually measured at the new capital differed in thickness from the foundation stratum at Sennu’s house (and the probability of this was extremely high), his template had to accommodate, in advance, a deformation-compensation zone with adjustable depth and a limestone pad. This zone meant Kes’s design could accommodate humus-layer differences across three or more distinct thicknesses -- for a drainage designer who had to verify his designs continuously against field conditions along the route, this was what they called a ”universal interface.” It was something Pah, a proofing artisan who had only ever done rough foundation stone, had measured in a single second with his brass angle-square across windblown sand on a drawing.

Papi did not enter the material yard -- he found a patch of shadow beside a cart and crouched down, using his quartz shard to draw the six men on a piece of waste pottery. With a manner that was not a sketch-artist’s quick study but possessed an extraordinarily precise sense of spatial orientation, he drew Enh’s great chisel-blade angle, Ensu’s hammer tip, and the row of guide-threads Beken had stitched across the sheepskin on his knee -- all onto this pottery shard, then connected them with arrows to the water-source points and the temporary lighting orientation of the material yard on the station map. This was an artisan-weapon-distribution diagram no one had asked for -- he was recording these old comrades’ most minute operational habits, not from fear of forgetting them, but hoping that years later, when these habits reached the guild’s worksite, they could form an operational model the guild could recognize and assign tasks by.

At dusk, the caravan made camp on the outer perimeter of the buttes. Hapy retrieved from his sample pouch the trial strips of magnesium-dolomite powder he had successfully trial-fired yesterday at Red Rock Slope -- after a night of air-drying, the strip surfaces had set into an extremely thin gray-white hard shell; a fingernail drawn across left only a shallow scratch, no powder shedding. He turned the strip over in his palm and handed it to Mehptah: ”This is the substitute waterproofing material I fired at Red Rock Slope using local limestone and weathered dolomite -- it temporarily fills the gap where waterproof clay is short. Have you ever used anything similar back in Thebes?” Mehptah accepted it, rubbed his thumb back and forth across the strip’s surface several times, then held it to the firelight to examine the color stratification of the cross-section, and returned it to Hapy: ”Back in Thebes we used limestone powder mixed with clay, but never added that yellow-crust dolomite you mentioned -- the cross-section color on your trial strip is more even than the limestone-powder mix, which means that yellow-crust component really is doing something. Once we reach the new capital and trial-fire a batch at full kiln volume, it should be directly usable.” Hapy took the strip back and added a line beside the ratio data on his limestone tablet: ”Mehptah -- cross-section even, recommends large-kiln verification.”

The new and old artisans spontaneously divided into several groups -- Mehptah led two old stonemasons in the material yard to help Hapy recalibrate the stone-grading labels on the carts; they placed their cobblestone classification sketches, drawn on the White River Ford riverbank, side by side with Hapy’s current standard sample boards for comparison -- from the grain-strike line on the front face to the counter-section marking direction on the side face, the two types of sample board were completely consistent. Beken and Enh sat beside the campfire, pulling the tools they had used for the greater part of their lives from their pouches one by one to clean them -- not packing up, but inspecting. Each chisel slid from its sheath at a speed far slower than usual -- not because they had forgotten the edge condition of any tool, but because it had been far too long since they had opened their tool cases in a safe place. In Thebes, opening the tool case each time could have meant another day of rushing to build a wall for the temple, a wall they had no wish to lay. But crouching beside the guild’s campfire now, each chisel they opened faced only the freshly sorted riverbank cobblestones in the material yard -- not to deliver work to a god, but so that tomorrow, when this batch of material was moved into the new capital encampment, every blade-profile mark from all these tools would be entered into the guild’s standard-angle register. Papi took six spare pottery shards from a cart and registered the six new members’ names one by one onto the roster. His charcoal was very blunt, half the finishing strokes of the names missing their carbon -- he aimed the charcoal tip against the edge of the standard stone chisel on his work stand in the dying firelight, knocked off a small pinch of carbon powder, smoothed it with his thumb, and continued writing the last three names. Mehptah watched the motion of his hand as he wrote -- the charcoal pressed extremely low as he wrote, sand grains scraped from the pottery shard dragging into the brush-tip, so that the end of the name carried an exceedingly fine burred edge. A burred edge was a texture of signature he had never seen in the Theban scribal office -- unpolished, yet every stroke drove genuine grip-force straight downward. He looked down at the name that the works overseer had written for him in the Theban artisan registry all those years ago -- mirror-smooth, without a burred edge. He stood, walked to Papi, and handed him his old pottery shard. ”Write me a new one -- I’ll trace over it myself with charcoal.”

The campfire burned until deep night. The wind over the wilderness blew in from the direction of the northern buttes, carrying the dry mineral scent peculiar to the gravel plains and the faint bitter-herbaceous tang of distant camel-thorn dampened by night dew. The very last of the six old stonemasons -- Enh -- still sat beside the campfire after everyone else had crawled under their reed mats. He was stitching his leather apron -- he had gripped it too tightly when signing the roster earlier, tearing loose half a circle of the old double-stitched palm-fiber seam at the apron’s edge. From the apron’s inner layer he picked out, one by one, the dried mint leaves that had long since lost their scent, laying them in a dry straight line on the stone slab beside the fire -- every mint leaf differed in shape and in its degree of sun-faded color. He restuffed the inner layer with fresh dried mint he had brought from Sennufer’s warehouse at Hawk’s Wing Ford when they had set out, then took needle and thread and stitched the torn palm-fiber seam back along its original path, one stitch at a time. The stitches were dense, denser than the old ones. Kamon lay not far away, not yet asleep -- he opened his eyes. The firelight, filtering through the gaps in the work-shelter cloth, cut Enh’s upper body, seen from the side, into the silhouette of a hunched old stone statue. He watched Enh put away his leather apron, rise, step past the extinguished embers and set it atop the tool case nearby, then walk out a few paces along the cart track leading east and stand for a long while facing the moonless dark plain. He heard him softly exhale one word: ”The new capital.” Not a declaration, not a question -- it was the release of something held too long and too heavy, and the word left his mouth without weight. Kamon closed his eyes. Tomorrow morning, he would lead more than just his own guild column further east, toward the direction of that name.

At daybreak, the morning light of the gravel plain slanted through the gaps between the limestone buttes, pulling the shadows of the cart column long and thin, like a procession flattened against the earth yet flowing in the same direction. The dawn wind still carried the last trace of moisture before the thin night dew on the butte’s stone faces evaporated -- that moment, unique in the day across this semi-desert zone, when the scent of water could still be smelled, impossibly faint, tinged with the faintly dissolved alkalinity of limestone, lingering in the nasal passages only long enough for two breaths. The caravan assembled at the foot of the buttes -- the cart axles had undergone joint calibration by Hapy and Mehptah the previous dusk; every cart’s bearing load had been re-leveled, the crushed-stone powder inside the hubs cleaned out and a film of rust-preventive palm oil applied.

The new and old artisans’ positions naturally intermingled after daybreak: Ensu’s stone-splitting hammer rested on his left shoulder, and beside him walked Hapy pushing the first materials cart -- between the hammer haft and the cart’s crossbar, a gap of roughly half an arm’s length was maintained, a formation spacing not yet practiced but already beginning to mesh. Beken’s sheepskin sheath was still wrapped tight around his left arm, but his right hand now held a standard sample stone Hapy had handed him that morning -- a black cobblestone brought from White River Ford; Beken was repeatedly tracing its return-layer line with his thumb, silently recalibrating whether the mnemonic he had given Hap the other day would need adjustment for the new capital’s red sandstone. Pah and Kes walked side by side at the column’s tail -- Pah had fitted the end of his brass angle-square with an extension gauge-head that Kes had improvised from fine hemp cord; the two of them walked while pantomiming the relationship between the new capital encampment’s drainage-ditch gradient and the wall-foundation dimensions. Pah’s right foot had a slight limp -- the previous day’s march had aggravated his old toe injury -- but he did not slow down, not from endurance, but because he would rather walk while thinking through a problem than stop and wait to think. Papi still bore the old bronze pot -- the previous night, Mery had arranged for him to record on the back of the warehousing指标表 the six new members’ entry dates, carried-tool inventories, and their physical-condition and water-consumption indices as of their first day’s arrival. This was the first time in his life he had participated in ”index filling”; after writing out every line of figures, he added at the end one extra entry of his own, beyond Mery’s prescribed format: ”Papi -- Scrap-Shard Registrar.” This was the first time he had given himself an identity title distinct from pot-handle porter. He shifted the bronze pot’s palm-fiber hanging strap from his left shoulder to his right -- not because his left shoulder was tired, but because the right shoulder faced the inner side of the column, where there was less dust, and the line of his newly inscribed identity would not be smudged off by pot-bottom soot.

Kamon walked at the very front -- with Mehptah to his left and Lu Zhu to his right. Mehptah’s knee still splayed outward as he walked, but his stride was half a palm’s width faster than yesterday -- not because his leg had healed, but because his body had automatically adjusted its rhythm within the guild’s formation: yesterday he had been a defector blocking the road; today his chisel’s blade profile had been entered into the roster, and every step he took was no longer merely a trek across wilderness but an approach toward a construction system’s worksite into which he had been incorporated and from which he was now required to contribute force through his blade angle. Lu Zhu, since the previous night, had not spoken further on the matter of accepting the old artisans -- he had placed the pale-blue-green dolomite rough stone he had brought from White River Ford back into the outer compartment of his sample pouch, which now held one additional slot for the facsimile of Mehptah’s semi-arc blade-profile specimen. He had recorded every artisan’s specialized blade angle in the front leaf of his sample pouch, on the same page as all the stone hardness gradings, soil permeability rates, and dead-corner temperature readings for storage ventilation. In his view, a blade’s angle, a stone’s hardness, soil’s shrinkage rate, and a granary’s temperature control -- all were parameters within a single system, no boundary separating the humanistic from the geological. He was, in his own way, folding this group of old stonemasons into the same full-parameter evolutionary chart that extended eastward with the works.

From the middle of the column, Seb turned his head and looked back at the buttes where they had camped the previous night -- he wanted to finish drawing the last cliff-face dip of these buttes, then annotate it on the encampment-defense survey map as a potential natural geological screen in this direction for the future. After finishing the drawing, he tucked it into the palm-frond scroll-case and, as he turned his head back, noticed a row of newcomers’ silhouettes ahead in the formation -- he saw Ensu’s hammer haft, at a tilt lower than half the height of the stone surface, swing lightly once from east to north in the morning light: an adjustment of hand-grip in the air, not a preparatory motion aimed at any stone. Beside Ensu, Mehptah held his chisel tip steadily downward -- no longer in yesterday’s posture, facing Kamon, ”hammerhead toward himself,” the posture of one who had ceased to strike stone, but angled forward toward the cart -- toward the direction of all the stone strata waiting ahead to be opened. Before them, the horizon still bore the brownish tone of the semi-desert, but the outlines of the limestone buttes had already begun to recede, shorten, and gray out to the west, dissolving at last into the background of morning light and dust.

Hapy jogged from beside the third cart to Kamon’s side, holding up the limestone tablet he had finished annotating just before departure -- the tablet displayed the tool types and stone-working specialties each of the six newly joined old stonemasons carried, cross-referenced with their corresponding numbers, and beside them the quantities of specialized coarse whetstones and standard sample stones he would need to prepare for these old artisans before the next resupply station. He had run over not to request instructions -- he held the limestone tablet up before Kamon’s eyes, and after Kamon had read it, clipped it back to the exterior of his cart’s moisture-proof archive pouch. This was not a report. This was process. The six new artisans’ tool-consumable resupply had been integrated into Hapy’s material-distribution system -- on the same tracking list as the waterproof clay, the magnesium-dolomite powder, and the camel-thorn cord.

The column pressed on east. Yesterday, this had been a guild caravan that had set out from the West Bank, absorbing scattered artisans along the way, its numbers precisely countable at every station by the roster’s fan-panels. But starting this morning, the roster’s fan-panels bore six more signature marks -- every mark different in its stroke method, its material, its angle of entry, and its supplementary notations, yet all arrayed across the same sheet of palm-fiber paper’s fan-panel surface, clamped shut at the pouch mouth by the same rough flake of red sandstone gathered from the river valley at Red Rock Slope. Ahead, the new capital still lay four days’ march away -- yet the character of the column had quietly transformed the afternoon before, when they had crested the barren ridge: from a group of organized artisans into a company of fellow travelers who had, of their own volition, turned old tracks onto a new road.
