Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 22: Chapter 12: Craftsmen Arrive — The Guild Takes Shape

of limestone, the slab does not move. It does not call out. It does not promise anything. But somehow — across dusty roads and palm groves and the rumors that travel faster than any official decree — word of what is written on it reaches the people who need to read it most.

On the third day after river-flat quarrying begins, the first group of craftsmen seeking to join arrives.

They are not from the West Bank. They come from the direction of Thebes. Four men, carrying tool bundles on their backs, dressed in coarse linen tunics that look — at a single glance — like they have walked a long, hard road. The straw sandals on their feet are worn down to half-soles, the woven palm fibers frayed and flattened. The grit of the road has worked its way deep into the weave, grinding every strand. Their feet beneath the sandals are callused in patterns that speak of years spent standing on stone.

The leader is a stone-cutter in his early forties. His name is Meket. He has worked fifteen years on the Theban temple construction site. On the left side of his face, a scar runs from cheekbone to jaw — an old wound, torn open by flying stone chips in a quarry more than ten years ago. The scar has healed pale and smooth, a seam of lighter skin against the sun-darkened face. On his right shoulder rests a stone chisel, the blade covered edge to edge in fresh grinding marks. The metal gleams faintly, even in the muted dawn light — a tool recently sharpened, ready for work.

He stands before the watch post at the settlement entrance, and the first words out of his mouth to the night-watchman are: ”Is the West Bank Stonemasons’ Guild still taking people?”

The watchman sends him to the quarry workshop to find Kamon. Meket walks over an hour with his three companions, from the settlement entrance to the quarry. At the workshop door he pauses. He does not go in. He has seen something — the gray slab standing at the entrance, five guild regulations written across it in charcoal. He stands before that slab and reads every character of the five rules, line by line, his lips moving silently. The morning sun has begun to warm the stone; he can feel the heat radiating off the slab’s surface as he reads. When he finishes, he turns his head and says to the three men behind him: ”This is it. The rules they have set are not the temple’s rules. They are not rules set for gods. They are rules set for people.”

Kamon is in the material yard behind the workshop at that moment, leading the twelve stoneworkers who remained in rushing out the first batch of standard mud bricks for the clinic. His palms are coated in crushed limestone dust; he scrubs them against hiswork tunic as he walks out. When he sees the four strangers standing at the door, he pauses for a beat — registering the worn sandals, the fresh grind marks on the chisel, the direction they have come from.

”Where did you come from?”

”Thebes.” Meket lowers his chisel from his shoulder and plants it on the ground. The blade bites into the crushed stone with a sound Kamon knows well — the sound of a tool that has seen real use. ”I was a stone-cutter at the East Annex Hall construction site of the Great Temple of Amun. Fifteen years. Then the new pharaoh’s edict came down. Every temple project stopped. The works officer dismissed all of us — not a single copper coin in severance pay. He said the temple has no money now, go find work elsewhere. We searched five days. Not one noble construction site dared take craftsmen dismissed from the Temple of Amun — the foremen said they were afraid of being marked as temple remnants by the new court.” His grip shifts on the chisel handle — the knuckles flexing once, then settling. ”Then we heard there is a Stonemasons’ Guild on the West Bank. Does not work for the temple. Only takes common people’s projects. We walked two days to get here — just to ask. Are you still taking people?”

”We are.” Kamon’s voice is even. ”But there are rules. The guild has five rules — you saw them outside. We have never touched temple projects, and we are not afraid of any ’remnant’ charge. Earn your bread by your craft, and you can stand firm anywhere.”

He looks at the chisel on Meket’s shoulder — the blade’s grinding marks are fresh, but the patina on the handle runs deep. Fifteen years of a man’s hand, worn into the wood. This patina can only come from someone who has held a chisel day after day, year after year — not ground in, but laid down by the slow, repeated seep of palm-sweat and the friction of the wooden handle, until the surface acquires a smooth, dark luster. It is not the raw, harsh gleam of a new chisel. It is the distinctive matte sheen of an old one — warm, smooth, gentle on the eye. A man who can put that kind of patina on a handle — his craft cannot be poor.

”Fifteen years to forge a good chisel. You grind the edge yourself?”

”Myself. Changed the handle half a year ago — the old one was cracked by a marble fragment.”

”Then put your name in the registry first.” Kamon hands the chisel back to Meket. His fingers brush the handle — the patina is smooth and slightly warm, like river-stone polished by a current. ”Then I will have Papi take you to the material yard. This afternoon, start by helping make a batch of standard mud bricks. After the evening meal, come to the workshop. I will walk you through the guild regulations in detail.”

Meket takes the chisel and writes his name in the registry. The three men behind him sign as well — a quarryman, a wall mason, and a young laborer who specializes in foundation tamping. Four men. Their combined years of experience exceed forty.

Kamon looks at the four new names on the registry. He draws a vertical line beside each name with his charcoal stick — a habit of his when registering new members. Beside every name, a line. As more lines accumulate, the registry grows denser. The charcoal leaves a fine, dark trail. Each line is a door opening.

He does not yet know that Meket and his three men are only the beginning.

Over the next three days, wave after wave of arrivals trickles in.

They do not come by the Nile’s official road — that route has too many temple informants. They come by the dirt tracks through the West Bank countryside, threading around the palm groves behind the quarry, converging on the settlement from every direction. You can tell how far they have walked by the dust on their tunics, by the wear on their sandals, by the way they squint at the settlement’s perimeter wall when it first comes into view — some with hope, some with a wariness worn deep by too many broken promises.

There is a wall mason from a Memphis noble’s construction site, six months of wages owed and never paid. His name is Patah. He arrives carrying two flat chisels that were left to rust in the workshop shed after the last project finished. The iron has a fine patina of orange-brown oxidation at the edges, but the blades are still sharp underneath. The first thing he does upon reaching the settlement is not to find anyone in charge. He crouches down by himself beneath the settlement’s perimeter wall crenellations and uses his flat chisels to compare the mortar joint thickness between the wall stones. The stone is warm against his palm, the mortar dry and firm. He does this for a long time, working his way along several cubits of wall, tapping, measuring, scraping. Then he says to the night-watchman — his exact words: ”This mortar ratio is not the templerecipe. You people developed this yourselves.” The watchman is a refugee who knows nothing about mortar ratios. But Seb, on night duty up in the corner watch post of the perimeter wall, hears this sentence. He leans his head down from the crenellations. The evening breeze lifts the hair from his forehead. ”Crushed-stone coreplus coarse riverbank sand. Lu Zhu tested four batches half a year ago. The fourth batch is what we use now.” Patah tilts his head back to look at Seb — and as his mouth works silently around the bonding logic between crushed-stone core andcoarse riverbank sand, his mind is already made up. That afternoon he signs the guild registry.

There is a foundation-tamping laborer from Lower Egypt who never received final payment for repairing a granary cellar. His name is Nagi. His arms are thick as palm trunks, and his palms are covered in hard callus from the tamping hammer — layer upon layer, some yellow-white, some darker at the centers where the friction has been deepest. He talks with Kamon for two hours, not to complain, but to compare the tamped-earth layer thickness, water-sprinkling volumes, and backfill methods of granary cellars across Lower Egypt. His conclusion: the tamped-earth foundation of the West Bank official granary is the most solid he has ever seen. ”Twelve years I have tamped earth in Lower Egypt. I have never seen a foundation with acrushed stonedamp-proof layer laid underneath.” When Kamon asks why he was denied hisfinal payment, Nagi says: ”Because after the granary was finished, the landowner piled his grain inside and never opened the door again. He said the tamped layer was too dense, the granary dried too fast, the grain lost moisture weight — he ended up short, took the loss, and blamed me.” When Nagi tells this story, he is not angling for wages. He is telling a technical joke — his tamping was too good, and that is why he lost his pay. This ironic joke spreads fast through the material yard. The craftsmen call him ”Too-Good Tamping Nagi” while they work, and Nagi shoulders his tamping hammer with a broad, gap-toothed grin — but his hands, if anything, move with even steadier precision than before.

There is a quarry-worker apprentice dismissed from Thebes and turned away by every local foreman afterward — a boy of barely fifteen, his master dead and no one willing to take him in. He crouched outside the quarry for an entire day and no one asked him anything. It was Hapy who found him, passing by after work at dusk. The boy had curled up beside the crushed stone pile and fallen asleep, arms wrapped around an old chisel — the handle worn smooth, the blade dulled. Hapy woke him. He did not say ”come with me.” He simply handed the boy his palm-fiber sieve and told him to start screening the crushed stone down to usable grain size. The next day, after the boy had screened three piles of crushed stone on his own, he walked to the registry and wrote his name — User.

The two young relief-carvers — one called Neb, one called Hotep — work their way through each of the three standardized tools on the craft demonstration platform, testing every one. Neb picks up the guild-standard stone chisel and tries it on a sample brick. Then he pulls out his own old chisel and sets it beside it for comparison. The two chisels lie side by side on the platform, their edge angles diverging by nearly half a finger-width. His old chisel’s edge angle is much wider than the guild standard — it was modified on the orders of a noble household’s steward. When Neb first forged this chisel, he ground the edge to the dimensions his master had taught him. Later, on the noble’s work site, the steward complained his relief lines were too broad — lacked that showy, delicate refinement the nobles demanded. He was ordered to narrow the blade opening and add an extra polish pass. Neb wraps that chisel in palm cloth now, tight, and places it in the bottom layer of his tool chest. He says to his companion: ”This one — I am not using it anymore. Not because it cannot cut. Because I cannot get past the feeling in my chest.” Hotep claps his shoulder and says nothing. Two young craftsmen standing before the craft platform, studying the demonstration diagrams for a long time. Then one picks up the leveling rule and measures the sample brick on the platform. He turns his head and asks his companion: ”This brick is thicker than the ones on the temple site by nearly a full finger-width — was it deliberate?”

”Yes.” Kamon’s voice comes from nearby. ”Thickened so we can fill the brick core with crushed stone. Building walls from solid stone alone uses too much material, takes too long, costs too much. Fill with a crushed-stone core, and the wall’s compressive strength does not fall below solid-stone construction — and you save thirty percent on stone.”

The two young craftsmen exchange a glance. What lights up in their eyes — that is the reaction of craftsmen seeing a new technique. Not curiosity. The instinctive excitement of people who work with their hands. The way a stoneworker reacts to a fine piece of stone, the way a woodworker reacts to a plank of tight, even-grained hardwood — they do not need to understand it. The calluses on their hands have already told them whether something is good.

”Your guild developed this yourselves?”

”Lu Zhu proposed it. We have alreadyverified it on guild work sites — the settlement perimeter wall crenellations were built with this method.” Kamon taps the sample brick twice with his finger as he speaks — listening to the sound to judge the crushed-stone core’s fill density. The brick answers with a solid, even thud. ”You two have laid reliefs on noble work sites for six years. In all that time — were you ever given a single day to decide for yourselves how to build a wall?”

The young craftsman does not answer. He lowers his head and sets the leveling rule back on the demonstration platform. His index finger runs along the ruler’s surface — this ruler’sgraduations have been calibrated against the palm-fiber standard measuring rope, every markprecise to half a finger-width. For six years on noble work sites, not one of the rulers he used was accurate. Not because they could not be made accurate. Because no one cared to make them accurate. Whether the wall dimensions were right or not depended on the foreman’s mood and the steward’s glances.

”No,” he says. ”I did not even decide what the back face of my walls looked like. The steward decided that.”

He writes his name in the registry. He writes it large — large enough to fill two lines.

On the evening of the fourth day after river-flat quarrying began, Kamon spreads the registry open on the crushed-stone ground in front of the gray slab and counts through the names once more with his charcoal stick.

Papi. Seb. Hapy — those twelve stoneworkers who gritted their teeth and stayed through that first wave, not a single one is missing. Meket and his three men — from Thebes. The two young relief-carvers — signed. The four foundation tampers who came from Memphis the day before last — signed. Plus the handful who arrived just this afternoon — he counts them one by one.

For every name he counts, he taps a dot beside it with charcoal. The ink dots on the registry now form two dense diagonal rows — the left-hand dots connect in an unbroken chain from the top of the page to the bottom, each dot a man still standing; the right-hand dots startdense and gradually thin out, turning to blank space after Taha’s row and Kenti’s row. The gap between the two rows of dots maps out the structure of everyone who has stayed and everyone who has left over these six days — a cartography of loyalty and necessity drawn in charcoal on palm paper. His charcoal stick pauses over that blank space. He hesitates — a held breath. He does not fill in any dots there. But he does not cross anything out either. He suspends the charcoal tip precisely in the center of that emptiness, then turns the registry to the next page and keeps counting.

”With today’s signings — forty-seven.”

Kamon sets the charcoal down.

Lu Zhu, crouching beside him, has been working a different set of numbers. He has drawn the clinic progress chart. ”At your current headcount — the clinic foundation tamping was originally estimated at twelve workdays. Now it needs —” He pauses for a mental calculation, eyes moving across the chart. The oil lamp beside them flickers, throwing dancing shadows across the figures. ”Six days. Provided everyone follows the guild’s standard technique uniformly — the tamped foundation layer thickness cannot drop below thirty finger-widths, and the crushed stone bedding layer must be screened to grain-size specification. If every man still tamps to his own old habits — you could have seventy men and still not tamp out aqualified foundation.”

He pauses. His fingertip taps lightly on the ”Materials Supply” column of the progress chart. The papyrus yields faintly under the pressure, the fiber soft from handling. ”One more thing — the official quarry supply cutoff is now in effect. We are bridging it with river-flat material and Old Nakht’s private quarry. Current inventory, counting every last piece, will hold for one month. The clinic foundation will usecrushed stonecore construction method uniformly, saving another thirty percent on material. Every dressed block goes to load-bearing members only.”

Kamon nods. Those first two days after the cutoff, he and Meru worked through three versions of the material allocation plan. Now it has finally stabilized. More people means the material accounts have to be kept finer — that is the reality they are carrying on their shoulders right now.

Meket stands behind him, looking at that progress chart — a table with dates on the horizontal axis, dailyworkers assigned per trade on the vertical, total workdays summed at the bottom. In fifteen years on the Theban temple construction site, he has never seen a chart like this. Temple work sites had no progress charts. They had only the steward’s mouth. The steward said fast, and it was fast. Said slow, and it was slow. Said you were not worth paying this month, and you were not paid. Meket stares at the chart for a long time, his eyes tracing every row and column. Then, without preamble, he taps the chart lightly with the handle of his chisel — the same chisel he laid on the craft demonstration platform when he registered with the guild yesterday. ”Before today, I never knew how many days were left until the day’s work was done. All I knew was — wake up, move stone, move stone until dark, stop.” His voice is quiet, rough, like stone sliding on stone.

The words ripple through the material yard. That evening, the craftsmen sitting around the palm-wood stumps talk over each other — from the progress chart to the horizontal lines Papi drew on the river-flat stone layers, to the damp-proof layercross-section diagram Lu Zhu drew in the official granary cellar. What begins asreminiscence slowly becomes debate, untilthe crescent moon climbed above the palm grove, the craftsmen gradually scatter back to their wooden work-shelters, each spread with palm fronds. The three rows of palm-wood stumps remain behind on the crushed-stone ground, silent in the moonlight, lined up in a perfect straight row — waiting. Waiting for the sky to lighten and forty-seven men to sit back down on them.

Kamon stands. He walks to the workshop entrance, lifts the palm-fiber measuring rope from the gray slab, then calls out to every stoneworker still working in the material yard: ”All of you — come over after the day’s work is done. No overtime tonight. There is something that needs to be announced — in front of everyone.”

By the time the sky darkens to the deep blue of early night, all forty-seven craftsmen have gathered around the workshop entrance.

Three rows of palm-wood stumps are set out on the crushed-stone ground — the same stumps the stoneworkers sit on every evening after work. Papi lights the oil lamp beside the gray slab. The flame wavers, then steadies, its glow falling across the five regulations on the stone. The characters are slightly thicker than they were a few days ago. Not charcoal traces anymore — Kamon has been tracing over them every single night, pressing the charcoal deeper each time, until the five lines have been worn from surface marks into grooves. You could run your finger over them blindfolded and still read them.

”I have called everyone here tonight for three things.” Kamon stands before the gray slab, the guild registry in his hand. The registry is bound from palm-fiber paper and grass-twine cord. On the cover is a single character, written in charcoal — the character for ”Craftsman.” His strokes are heavy, deliberate. Before tonight, he always wrote lightly — afraid of mistakes, afraid of wasting paper, afraid his characters would not look good enough. No one saw the exact moment he wrote this one tonight. But that single character is not ”Craftsmen.” Not ”Craftsman Household.” Just ”Craftsman.” Every person who belongs to this guild — wall-builders, stone-cutters, earth-tampers, quarrymen, woodworkers — he has written all of them into this one character. His voice is not loud, but every one of the forty-seven people gathered outside the workshop hears every word clearly. Not because he is shouting. Because every single person has gone still.

”First thing — from today onward, the Stonemasons’ Guild will no longer be called the ’Preparatory Committee.’ The registry holds forty-seven names. Forty-seven people is enough to set the rules in stone. From now on — whether more come or fewer — the guild’s rules will not change by a single character because the headcount rises or falls.”

He points to the first regulation on the gray slab: ”Unified wages. Seniority does not matter — same trade, same wage. Settled daily, cleared monthly. No delays, nodeductions.”

Second regulation: ”Resist unpaid corvee. Guild craftsmen do not accept any form offorced unpaid conscription. If the authorities or the temple have urgent construction and need to conscript craftsmen — they must pay at the guild’s standard wage rate. Otherwise — the guild does not release its people.”

Third regulation: ”Unifiedtechnique standards. All projects undertaken by the guild — masonry, stone-cutting, foundation tamping, drainage-channel slope — are all executed according to the guild’s unified construction standards. The standards are laid out on the craft demonstration platform. Every joining craftsman must pass the standard technique assessment before working independently.”

Fourth regulation: ”Craftsman work-hour ledger. How many hours each man works each day, at what wage rate, how much pay received — all registered in a personal work-hour ledger. The ledger is produced in two copies — one kept by the individual, one archived with the guild. If, in future, wages are ever withheld again — bring your ledger to the guild to file a claim. The guild will pursue it.”

Fifth regulation: ”Apprentice training system. For every apprentice a guild craftsman takes on, the guild subsidizes half the apprentice’s wages. Apprenticeship lasts two years, plus one year of supervised practice — three full years before taking on work independently. Apprentices are not their master’s private property. Apprentice work hours must also be registered in the ledger.”

These five regulations — the last time he read them aloud, they were a draft scratched on the gray slab, the strokesragged, the sentences still bearing traces of revision. Tonight they are the final text, every characterunchanged, every line traced over by the charcoal stick until it has become a groove. The lamp flame casts thegrooves into sharp relief — light and shadow in every stroke.

Among the gathered craftsmen, heads are nodding. Meket — the stone-cutter from Thebes — raises his right hand. The motion is abrupt, almost involuntary, as if his arm decided before his mind did. ”Let me say one thing.” His voice isrough, the voice of a man who has spent fifteen years shouting over the noise of a quarry face. ”Fifteen years I worked on the temple construction site. Never once was my name carved into a wall. I do not need my name carved now. But this work-hour ledger — I am keeping my own copy. And if anyone dares falsify a work-hour ledger — I, Meket, will be the first to answer it.”

Several craftsmen slap their knees. This kind ofrough approval is the most real kind — no one organized it, no one led it. The knees felt the force in the hands and struck themselves.

”Second thing.” Kamon turns the registry to the back page — on that page is drawn a table. The horizontal rows are labeled with trades: Wall Masonry, Stone-Cutting, Earth Tamping, Quarrying, Woodworking — five major categories. The vertical columns are labeled with ranks: Apprentice, Journeyman, Master. The charcoal lines are straight, the grid clean — Lu Zhu’s hand, unmistakably. ”Starting tomorrow, all guild craftsmen will be grouped by trade. Each group will have a group leader. The group leader is not an official — no extra pay. His only duty is to inspect the group’stechnique quality. Group leaders are elected by their own group members — elections to be completed within three days. The clinic project is the first project the guild undertakes after its formal founding. Foundation tamping, wall construction, herb-storehouse damp-proofing — all completed by guild craftsmen. Lu Zhu has already delivered the full construction drawings. Materials supplied centrally by the Merchant Alliance. The timeline, the quality, the material usage for this project — all carried by the guild itself. If we do it well, the common people of the West Bank will trust us. If we do it badly — you will not need to wait for the temple to come shut us down. You can smash this slab yourselves and go home to farm.”

No one laughs. No one raises an objection. On thissweltering, quiet night, two rows of palm-wood stumps hold forty-seven men with hands thick with callus. They have been called ”lowly laborers” on temple construction sites. They have been invisible men in noble households. They have bled and sweated on quarry faces, and in the end could not even build a shelter for themselves. Now someone is telling them: your craft is worth a standard. Your hours are worth a ledger. Your rules do not need a god’s approval. They stand on their own.

”Third thing —” Kamon pauses. A brief silence, the kind that gathers weight before it breaks. He closes the registry and lays it on top of the gray slab. His palm rests flat against the cover, over that single character he wrote. ”I received word today: Nekhem’s people are going around paying off the old craftsmen who left — a fixed copper sum every month, so long as they continue refusing to sign. This is not a secret. Before the envoy left the West Bank, he boasted something to me. He said: ’What do you think these people follow you for? Right and wrong? Right and wrong are worth nothing.’” He sets his hand on the gray slab, his palm pressing against the grooves of those five lines — thegrooves rough and familiar under his skin. ”I told him — whether right and wrong are worth anything is not his to decide. This slab stands here. If people are willing to stand beside it — then it is worth something.”

A voice from among the seated craftsmen calls ”Good!” — not a knee-slap this time. Shouted from the throat. Then more voices follow. Not aorderly slogan. Just a crowd ofrough craftsmen expressing ”I stand with you” in their own way. Someone bangs a chisel against a palm-wood stump. Someone slaps his own thigh. Someone stands up and then sits back down.noisy, disorderly, devoid of ceremony. But more forceful than any ceremony could ever be.

In the midst of thisroughcommotion, several figures at the outermost edge of the circle quietly withdraw. They are not leaving. They are going to the material yard to carry out the foundation-tamping tools for tomorrow’s clinic ground-breaking — delivering them to the building site ahead of time. They cannot bear to interrupt this moment of heat. But they cannot bear even more to waste a single hour of tomorrow’s work time.

After the gathering disperses, Kamon stands alone before the gray slab.

The oil lamp’s flame flickers in the night breeze threading through the palm groves — a dry rustle, the fronds scraping softly against each other. The flame shapes his silhouette against the stone into two halves of light and dark — the lit half thrown across the writing, the dark half stretching along the ground, slanting across that row of abandoned pottery shards. Thirteen shards in total. Some were thrown down by craftsmen who walked away. Some were placed here by craftsmen who came and stayed. He has never cleared them away. Every shard bears a carved name.

Lu Zhu walks over and crouches beside the gray slab. In his hands are the three-view construction drawings for the clinic — elevation, section, plan. The palm paper rustles as he spreads them across the crushed-stone ground, using a small stone to weigh down each corner against the night breeze. He marks the tamped-layer thickness data on the foundation position in charcoal. The tip of the charcoal stick whispers against the paper.

”Tomorrow the clinic breaks ground,” he says. ”The foundation tamped layer — keep it at thirty finger-widths thickness. Your men are fast, but you cannot rush them. Every tamped layer must be sprinkled with water and compacted — water volume controlled to the point where a fistful clumps when squeezed but crumbles when dropped. Too little water and it will not compact. Too much, and it will crack after drying.”

”Should we send the clinic a brick from this slab?” Kamon asks suddenly.

”What kind of brick?”

”The Stonemasons’ Guild’s first standard brick — pressed to this ruler’sgraduations.” Kamon lifts the palm-fiber measuring rope from the gray slab and holds it up against the moonlight. The moon has climbed above the palm canopy now, and its light turns every palm fiber in the rope into a distinct white thread — each line straight. Not a single one bowed. ”This clinic — it is not being built for a god. It is being built for people. This brick should go under the clinic’s wall foundation — to raise every person who comes here for healing by one step.”

Lu Zhu looks at him. He does not say ”that has a nice symbolic quality.” He says only: ”Place it in the exact center of the wall foundation. It will not affect the load-bearing structure. Call me when you do it.”

In the distance, the sound of crushed stone being struck from the quarry direction pauses for an instant — then resumes. The night-shift stoneworkers are turning the second batch of standard bricks to air-dry. The brick blanks are laid out across the crushed-stone ground, row after row, lined upneatly. Every brick’s thickness is exactly one and a half marks on the palm-fiber measuring rope — no deviation. Moonlight falls across the blanks and turns the wet clay to aa matte dark brown, the color of rich earth after rain. These bricks will be laid into the clinic’s wall foundation tomorrow. They will not bear anyone’s name. But the walls they build — every brick’s thickness, every mortar joint’s width — will tell every person who looks upon those walls: this wall was built to its rules. And those rules — craftsmen set them.

Beyond the quarry, on the river flat, the old fisherman and the newly arrived quarry apprentice User are crouched beside the last heap of unsorted crushed stone.

The old fisherman draws a water-ripple curve in the air with his palm-wood pole, teaching User how to read the weathered surface color to judge whether a stone’s core holds hidden cracks. The pole tip traces a smooth arc through the moonlight — the same arc the river’s surface makes when the current bends around a submerged rock. User grips the palm-fiber sieve Hapy gave him — the fibers are already softening from use, molding to the shape of his hands. He asks: ”Old master — when you sort the stones, what is that line you trace in your mind?”

The old fisherman glances at him. ”I do not say anything. I just trace a water-ripple in my mind. From the moment I step my first foot into the water every morning, until the sole of my foot touches the surface — that ripple, I have traced it for thirty years. I have never once traced it wrong.” User writes this down in the small palm-paper notebook he has just received from Hapy. The annotations Hapy wrote on the perimeter wall were ”Medicine chest to avoid sun, left walllow side wind.” The annotation User writes for the old fisherman on the river flat is: ”Read the water-ripples — the first ripple beneath the water’s surface.”

Farther out beyond the quarry, at the village entrance, the old stonemason Pepi has also been standing for a long time.

He does not walk closer. He does not let anyone see him. The laughter and the chisel-strikes carrying from the workshop — he can hear them clearly from half a league away. In the year when he led Kamon’s father in splitting their first block of stone, hehad once dreamed of a day when stoneworkers could make their own rules. He tightens his grip on his chisel — the old grip, the one that has held this tool for longer than most of the men in that workshop have been alive. The wood is warm and smooth under his palm, shaped to his hand by decades of use. In the end, he turns and walks home.

The next morning, before the sky has fully lightened, there is half a cartload of dressed edge-block stone outside the material yard gate — stackedneatly, every corner squared. Beside it rests an old chisel, its bladepolished to a mirror shine. When Papi finds it, the cart tracks have already been dampened by the morning dew. They lead only toward the old village.

And in a courtyard at the other end of the old village, Taha stands leaning on a palm-wood crutch, in the darkness outside the quarry. He does not go in. He listens to the cheers, the laughter, the sound of palms slapping the gray slab — the stone ringing under the impact. His lips move, as ifmurmuring something. Then he turns and limps slowly back the way he came. All the way home, he does not look back. But he strikes his crutch against the ground — hard. The sound is nothasty, notslow. It does not sound like walking away. It sounds like keeping time — waiting for the day he carries that chisel of his back to the workshop.

He returns to his own house and sits for a long time in the courtyard piled with crushed stone. The night air cools around him, carrying the distant murmur of the Nile. Then he stands, walks to the corner where he set down that old chisel — the one he brought home. That chisel has been with him for twenty-three years. The patina on the handle has been worn by the web of his thumb into three grooves of different depths: the first, the shallowest, worn during his apprenticeship, when he was still clumsy with the chisel and his grip often slipped; the second, the deepest, worn across the ten years from age thirty to forty — the decade he swung his chisel more than three thousand times a day on the quarry face; the third, shifted slightly upward by an angle, worn when his striking habit changed after forty-five, his wrist taking more of therecovery than his arm, the direction of his thumb’s pressure shifting upward by a hair. Three grooves stacked together — that is most of his life’s resume.

His son sits on the threshold, watching him raise that chisel into the moonlight. The blade has beenpolished to a mirror finish. The metal throws back the moon’s pale light in a perfect, even gleam. His son asks: ”Father — are you going tomorrow?”

Taha does not answer. He lays the chisel across his knees and looks down at the leg the crushed stone crippled — that leg, the one that was ruined rushing a deadline for the temple, three consecutive night shifts, a misstep on the cliff-facegravel layer. The temple never sent anyone to check on him afterward. Not once. He lay in bed for four months, surviving on the meager income his daughter-in-law earned selling straw sandals at the market.
