Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 37: Chapter 1: Oath on the Barren Land — The Full-City Plan Begins

Even the hardest earth on this wilderness tasted different from the soil of home.

Lu Zhu stood on the hard-crusted ground outside the encampment, watching the sun climb from the eastern dunes. The low-angled dawn light had already baked the sand into a pale gold, and the morning air across the wilderness was dry — a dryness altogether unlike the damp river-mist dawns he had known. Here the air carried no weight of water; it held only the faintest residue of night dew, so thin it evaporated almost before it could settle, the ground flashing white for half a breath before the moisture vanished entirely, leaving the eyes blinking against the glare. He rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand — an old habit. Charcoal dust had long since worked itself into the fibers of his coarse-linen tunic, impossible to wash out. It was the charcoal he used when tracing drawings, smeared on again and again, day after day, until the stains layered over one another and dyed the cloth around his cuffs a gray so dark it could never be called clean.

He lowered his hand and glanced at his fingers. The nail-beds were black too. A fine line of dried blood ran along the edge of his index finger — caught on a burr while probing a sounding-rod into the hard crust yesterday, no time to dress it. A thin, translucent scab had already formed over the wound’s edge, charcoal grit embedded in it like a seam of ink drawn impossibly fine.

The encampment’s bronze bell rang.

The bell had been Sobekh’s idea — hung from a palm-timber crossbeam at the camp’s main gate, struck without fail every dawn at the fifth watch. Sobekh was an overseer dispatched by the Theban royal works, in his early fifties, a man who had spent thirty years climbing through the ranks of the royal construction system. From river embankments to temple courtyards, from enclosure walls to granaries — not a single structure under his supervision had ever suffered a collapse. He had built his reputation on the word ”no-accident,” and the iron weight behind that word pressed into every joint he had ever inspected, every foreman who had ever reported to him. The bronze bell, once struck, produced a hard, truncated clang — roughly the thickness of a finger-joint — the sound carrying no lingering tail. Across the wilderness, the moment the clang cut off, ten thousand sounds of labor would erupt at once. Lu Zhu had puzzled over this more than once: back in his old life, when a work horn blew at a riverbank site, the sound always spiraled outward in widening rings — one ring, two rings, three rings — before finally dispersing into the river’s surface. Here, every dawn at the bell, the strike was so short, so loud, so abrupt. And yet — at the sound of it, he always knew exactly where he was. The shape of the sound was the shape of this place.

This place — no walls, no storehouses, nothing to hold in the sound. Once the clang scattered, it was gone. A city with no structure at all — its sound was solitary.

He crouched down and pressed his palm flat against the ground. The sensation was dry and astringent, utterly unlike the damp spring of the Nile’s floodplain silt he remembered. The sand under his hand gave slightly under pressure, and when he lifted his palm, the rim of the print was fringed with a fine, dense fringe of white — salt efflorescence. He had seen this exact pattern before, on the survey sketches he had drawn back at the Dongfeng dam project in his former life, where he had made a special note of it. The water table was too shallow. Saline groundwater, riding capillary action upward, dissolved and recrystallized at the surface. If a foundation were laid directly onto such ground without a moisture barrier, the salt would eat into the wall-base stone like slow, patient teeth, reducing it to powder.

He scraped up a small flake of the white crust with his nail and touched it to his tongue — faintly bitter, astringent. He knew the taste: sodium carbonate and sodium chloride, mixed crystals.

”This stretch of foundation has to be written into the drainage design separately,” he said to himself. The words were snatched away the instant they left his mouth, carried off by the wind across the wilderness.

”Master Lu! Master Builder Lu!” Someone was calling from the direction of the camp.

Lu Zhu turned. A young errand-runner in a Theban-style short kilt was sprinting toward him — a boy of perhaps fifteen or sixteen, his face already peeling from the wilderness sun, patches of uneven pink showing through the tan. He clutched a roll of papyrus in one hand, the paper crimped from his grip, the bottom edge damp with sweat where it had pressed against his side as he ran. He came to a halt, one hand braced on his knee, the other thrusting the papyrus forward. His voice came in ragged bursts: ”Overseer Sobekh has sent word — he wants the full-city planning framework’s first draft before the eighth watch.” He straightened, still panting, and added: ”The Overseer also said — Thebes has forwarded an urgent directive from the Royal Works Institute. It arrived overnight. Something about — the foundation and the Akhetaten boundary alignment needing immediate response.”

Lu Zhu took the papyrus, unrolled it, and scanned the contents. It was a task inventory Sobekh had compiled — itemized with ruthless clarity, every line circled in red-ochre to mark ”requires on-site confirmation.” His eyes ran down the list: first item, the contour survey map benchmark calibration; second, the main arterial road width standard confirmation; third, the palace district and great temple siting; fourth, the submission deadline — and, at the very bottom, one line: ”To be clarified: the geometric relationship between the full-city north-south arterial axis and the sunrise orientation.” That line was circled in a double stroke of red ochre, the pressure so heavy the pigment had nearly cut through the papyrus.

”The sunrise,” Lu Zhu murmured. ”Of course. He means to ask whether I intend to set the entire city by the sun.”

He rolled up Sobekh’s papyrus and walked back toward the camp. The hard crust crunched underfoot — a fine, sandy grit grinding between sole and ground — and through the thin soles of his straw sandals he felt a faint, unsettling give in the earth’s rebound. He knew what that sensation meant. The water table was shallow; the sand layer held pore-water pressure; the ground’s bearing capacity was low. In his previous life, on sites with shallow groundwater and saline soil, the standard approach was to scrape down to firm bearing, then lay a graded rubble moisture-break to sever the capillary rise — only then could the foundation walls be brought within a safe settlement range.

But that was getting ahead of things. What he had to deal with first was not the foundation — it was Sobekh’s task list.

The encampment’s main structure was a single shelter. The timber frame was local acacia, the trunks never planed smooth — bark still clung to them in strips, the surface crisscrossed with old gouge-marks where adze-blades had bitten and skipped. Coarse linen cloth was stretched over the roof beams as a canopy; there were no walls, only a waist-high reed-mat screen lashed around the perimeter. The matting was woven tight enough to break the wilderness wind — but through the gaps between reeds, the wind still threaded, making the linen canopy overhead stir in slow, rhythmic pulses, like something breathing. Inside, a rough table had been cobbled together from riverbed cobblestones — not a table, really, but a flat slab of limestone propped on piled stone, its surface never dressed, naturally uneven. When you spread a drawing across it, you had to weigh down all four corners with rocks. By the time Lu Zhu walked in, every drawing on the slab already had its corners pinned — stones of mismatched sizes, a small-scale stone exhibition in its own right.

Sobekh was already standing before the slab. He had been there for some time. In his early fifties, tall, his back still straight, he stood with both hands resting on the stone’s edge, his gaze moving across the several engineering progress charts laid out before him. The fingers of his right hand kept up an unconscious, repetitive motion — rubbing the brass collar of the short bronze ruler he always carried. It was his thinking habit. The ruler’s brass had been polished to a mirror-dark sheen by years of that same absent stroke.

”These lines you’ve drawn on the map — these lines curving all over the place — what are they?” Sobekh tapped the butt-end of his short ruler against the contour lines on the survey map. The ruler’s butt was a hardwood cap — the wood was Nile acacia, dense-grained, darkened by ten years of hand-oil to a near-black amber, the end banded with a ring of brass.

”Contour lines,” Lu Zhu said, stepping up to the slab and tracing a finger along one of the curves. ”Lines connecting points of equal elevation on the ground. This outer ring — that’s the boundary of the riverbank flats. This inner ring — that’s the lowest point where the seasonal floods reach each year. The vertical difference between them — that’s the height you asked about.”

Sobekh frowned at the lines. His thumb rubbed a few circles over the brass collar of his ruler. Then, abruptly, he used the ruler’s tip to point at the stretch of ground between the riverbank-flat boundary and the wilderness edge. ”On this map of yours — where exactly does the annual flood reach its lowest point?”

”Calculated from the Nile hydrological records for the past dozen-odd years — right here.” Lu Zhu drew a circle with his finger around the lowest line. ”But that’s based on the records from the old gauge station. Last year the river channel shifted — the bed broadened and the gradient shallowed by roughly thirty percent. The channel narrowed by close to half. At the same discharge volume, the water level here will rise higher than the records indicate. The actual flood line may deviate.”

”How do you correct for it?”

”Install a water-level gauge post on the riverbank. Starting now, record the depth once a day. By the time the flood comes, we’ll have actual data from this location.”

”The flood is still four months away. We can’t wait four months.” Sobekh rapped his ruler once on the stone slab — the butt-end struck with a muffled thud. ”His Majesty’s decree is explicit. Akhetaten’s construction must break ground within the year. Before the year is out, this patch of wilderness — nothing on it now — has to show walls, gates, granaries, and encampments worthy of the name new capital. That means before the first stone is laid, the full city’s road grid and the boundaries of the great temple must be fixed. A single massive project. And you’re telling me you want four months of water-level data before you start?”

Lu Zhu did not answer. He reached for a fresh sheet of papyrus, spread it flat on the stone slab, and began to draw.

”Compromise,” he said. ”Reserve the space on the master plan.”

”What do you mean?”

Lu Zhu drew a long north-south centerline, and along both sides of it, parallel auxiliary lines. ”This is the city’s main arterial road — the central axis. It connects the river harbor to the northern palace district —” he drew a segment of curved riverbank between the two, ”— this stretch, its width and building lines won’t be finalized until the water data comes in. Reserve it. When the data is sufficient, set the exact boundary.”

Sobekh’s jaw tightened. ”That blank zone —”

”Is where we start building.” Lu Zhu drew a circle around the zone. ”First, set the arterial road and the east-west transverse avenue’s elevation benchmarks. This high ground here is roughly fifteen cubits above the riverbank — floodwater can’t reach it. Drainage from the road surface flows to the low sides by natural gradient — reserve the drainage-channel corridors now, wait for the water data, then finalize the dimensions. That way, we neither delay the arterial work for the water readings, nor risk flood damage from building roads without data.”

Sobekh was silent for a long moment. It was a silence of concession — but not an easy concession. Thirty years in the royal works had taught him to recognize feasibility when he saw it — and to recognize the long, grinding erosion that came after every compromise with feasibility. Then, from inside his tunic, he drew out a letter bearing the seal of the Theban Royal Works Institute. The papyrus was fine-grade, the ochre pigment of the script still crisp, the bottom corner stamped with the Institute’s official seal in green faience paste.

”Read this.”

Lu Zhu took the letter and unrolled it. It was from a senior architect at Thebes — one Pa-nehem-Ipet, a ranking master architect of the Royal Works Institute. The letter’s tone was impeccably courteous, its argument unambiguous: the main road of the new capital should match the width of Thebes’ royal processional avenue. The main road should be twelve cubits wide. The lateral roads, six cubits. And at the end — ”not subject to alteration.” The subtext, couched in language of exquisite deference, was that any divergence from Theban standards would invite the kind of scrutiny that certain factions in the Theban temple — meaning the faction around Nekhem — were already poised to exploit. Lu Zhu noted the letter’s phrasing: every reference to ”the Theban precedent” was lifted straight from the oral-formula repertoire that Nekhem’s circle in the Theban priesthood had been circulating. The man was defeated on the question of authority — but his after-currents in the bureaucracy were far from still. This letter — polite on the surface — was, in fact, a first probe of resistance, launched from within the Institute’s own channels.

Lu Zhu finished reading and set the letter aside.

”Twelve cubits won’t work,” he said.

”The Theban royal avenue has been twelve cubits for a hundred years.”

”Thebes is a city already built — its building lines are fixed, and its roads are too narrow to widen.” Lu Zhu spread both hands flat on the full-city planning map. ”This wilderness is a blank sheet. If the main road is only twelve cubits — the moment donkey-carts and palanquins crowd the surface, the population doubles, and traffic seizes up, the main road becomes the city’s bottleneck. By the time you want to widen it, both sides are already lined with people’s houses — you can’t demolish them, you can’t widen the road.”

”What do you propose?”

”Main arterial road, twelve cubits — but hold a six-cubit building-line setback on each side as reserved open space. Lateral roads, six cubits — with a three-cubit setback on each side. And between the northern river harbor and the southern grain-storage district, a north-south longitudinal boulevard — sixteen cubits wide, for peacetime through-traffic and market-processional use. In wartime, if the river harbor is raided by hostile forces, this boulevard moves troops from the high-ground garrison to the riverbank within a single watch.”

Sobekh’s fingers, stroking the short ruler, went still. He lifted his eyes to Lu Zhu. What was in that look was not objection — it was something deeper. A fear that a man who had spent thirty years in the royal works system acquires as instinct: the fear of the word ”reserve.” He had seen too many engineers who, because they reserved for contingencies, overran their budgets beyond all reason; and too many engineers who, because they refused to look ahead, saw their finished work proven obsolete before the mortar had dried.

”Do you have any idea what a twelve-cubit-wide slab-stone road surface costs? The roadbed alone — in gravel and sand —”

”I know,” Lu Zhu said, calm. ”And I also know that right now we can’t afford to surface twelve cubits across the full length — not with our current stone budget. But.” He paused, and his finger traced out the two edges of that twelve-cubit boulevard on the survey map. ”I’m asking for the twelve-cubit width on the plan — not on the finished road surface. Right now, we pave to six cubits. The remaining six cubits on each side — we hold as a reserved building-line setback. That’s the boundary separating the road from all future construction. If the day comes when we need to widen — the space is already there. No demolition, no narrowing, no regret.”

Sobekh was silent again. Then, very slowly, he nodded. The way he nodded — one hand falling from the ruler to rest flat on the stone slab, his gaze steady — conveyed not agreement to a single item, but a shift to a different register of questioning.

”The road width is settled for now. Tell me first — the full city’s north-south axis — where exactly are you driving the first stake?”

Lu Zhu did not hesitate. He pulled out the survey map he had just referred to — the topographic base-map provided by the Theban Royal Works Institute, a composite of several papyrus sheets stitched together. Across it, charcoal traced a line running from north to south. The northern end of that line sat squarely on the high ground at the wilderness’s edge — a stretch of ground he had probed with his own feet days earlier, where the surface hardness shifted unmistakably underfoot, the bearing stratum a dense cemented layer, and the line ran unbroken all the way to the natural river-harbor at the Nile’s bend.

He laid his finger on that line and spoke, one point at a time: ”The northern end — this is the palace district. Of all the sites on the high ground, this is the highest, closest to the river harbor — incoming tribute grain and waterborne supplies can be offloaded directly. The middle stretch — the great temple. Set back from the flood line, higher than the southern residential zone. The southern end — the commoners’ residential quarter and the market, with the river harbor and docks at the southernmost tip.”

Sobekh’s gaze tracked the line. But his eyes did not stop at the northern palace or the great temple — those were familiar categories, things any Theban architect would know to place. His eyes swept all the way to the southern end of the line — and stopped on a small circle Lu Zhu had drawn there in charcoal. Not far from the river harbor, slightly higher than the surrounding ground — a patch of natural, shallow-depression grassland.

”What is this?”

”The low grassland north of the riverbank flats. Higher than the surrounding land.”

”What are you planning to build here?”

Lu Zhu paused. The charcoal stick in his hand turned half a circle between his fingers. ”A medical hall.”

Sobekh looked up and studied Lu Zhu’s face in that split-second of pause. He had known Lu Zhu long enough now — since they first began dealing with each other at the Sennu house on the West Bank — to understand: when this man said the words ”medical hall,” he had already finished designing the building. Foundations, structure, function — all worked out. He simply hadn’t found the right moment to bring it forward. When he said ”medical hall” back at the West Bank, it meant a building framed to the highest standards he had ever set. When he said ”medical hall” at Wheat Hill, it meant a complete system of clean-water supply and waste-drainage integrated into the structure. Now, on this wilderness, when he said ”medical hall” — it would mean something even more.

”Fine.” Sobekh did not press further. He used the short ruler to trace the north-south axis once more on the stone slab, the ruler’s tip leaving a faint, pale score on the surface. ”Then the northern and middle sections of the axis — set. Leave the southern end held for now.”

”Agreed.”

”One more thing.” Sobekh raised a single finger. ”The alignment of the great temple and the great hall — the bearing to the sunrise — must be submitted within three days. This isn’t my demand — it’s Thebes’. His Majesty’s decree is explicit on this point. The bearing of the great temple to the sunrise — it must be verified, it must be measured, it must be confirmed on the ground.”

Lu Zhu nodded. He knew this was the gate that could not be skipped. The great temple and the great hall were the two anchors — once their bearings were set, the full city’s axis was locked; once their boundaries were drawn, the city’s skeleton was framed. After that, Kes and Seb could begin the precise mapping of the northern high ground and the foundation bearing-capacity tests, and only then could the residential and storage districts be overlaid on the grid and pushed outward. The sunrise bearing — that meant determining the sun’s exact rising position on the horizon on a specific day of the year. No astronomical almanac existed that could simply be consulted. It had to be observed, recorded, verified — using only the naked eye and the calculation formulas of observational geometry.

Just then, the reed-mat door-flap was shoved aside. Seb leaned in — limestone dust still unmelted from his face, his shoulders and knees entirely coated in gray-white powder, his eyebrows frosted with it. Only his eyes were clean. He had just come straight from the quarry.

”Overseer — Thebes has sent another urgent directive.” He handed over a rolled papyrus, the tie-cord a double-strand of dyed linen thread — the thread still bore flecks of fine sand, caught on the wax seal when the messenger had dismounted at the camp.

Sobekh took it, broke the seal with his thumb, unrolled it, and read. His expression did not change — a man who had spent thirty years in the royal bureaucracy did not let such things show on his face. But his fingers, on the brass collar of that short ruler, rubbed two full extra circles.

”What is it?” Lu Zhu asked.

Sobekh handed him the letter.

Lu Zhu took it and read. It was a technical inquiry from the Theban Royal Works Institute — a formal query bearing the seal of Pa-nehem-Ipet, the Institute’s senior master architect. The substance of the inquiry was highly specific: it opened by acknowledging — in language studiously formal — Lu Zhu’s achievements in the West Bank engineering works; then, with a pivot as smooth as a well-oiled hinge, it stated that, in the matter of the Akhetaten wilderness foundation engineering method, the Theban architects had — after exhaustive deliberation — recommended, that is to say, insisted upon, the use of the traditional lime-crushed-stone rubble-trench method, excavated directly to bedrock and backfilled with lime mortar and quarry spalls — ”a method proven over a thousand years, reliable beyond question, without engineering risk.” And appended at the end was a sentence — that Akhetaten was the new capital, that its site was sacred, and that any foundation method should draw upon the classic experience of the great temples and noble tombs — ”it is said that the sandstone masonry at the Dendera quarry face is of a quality sufficient to supply the new capital in perpetuity, and this proposal is hereby commended.” The inquiry concluded by requesting that the Akhetaten construction team submit a detailed technical comparison of foundation methods, along with full calculations, as a single integrated report — with all supporting evidence — to be filed at the next submission.

Lu Zhu set the letter down. His fingertips, as they released the paper, unconsciously rubbed against each other — the gesture of a man handling a substance whose name was ”lime-crushed-stone rubble-trench.”

The so-called lime-crushed-stone rubble-trench — it was a layered rammed-earth and gravel moisture-barrier method that had been used in noble tomb construction during the Old Kingdom. It was recorded in the old archives. He remembered it — remembered, too, that when Sennu-house’s granary foundation was being treated on the West Bank, someone had already brought it up, only to have it voted down. Now, here it was again.

But this was not the West Bank. The Akhetaten high-ground palace district’s structural walls would not exceed a single story; the roof would be timber-truss and light-frame, the total dead load barely a tenth of a tomb’s. The groundwater depth here, the saline-alkali concentration, the foundation bearing stratum’s compressive settlement coefficient — none of it matched the conditions at the Dendera quarry. To simply copy the old method wholesale — that meant laying down a foundation whose every parameter was wrong before a single course of stone had been set. And ”wholesale copying” — that was precisely the kind of impossibility that, in Sobekh’s world, was the most convenient kind of argument to have.

”They’ve set a trap for you,” Sobekh said. His tone was flat — the tone of a man laying out a fact. ”If you agree — the foundation is their responsibility if it fails. If you refuse — the Theban senior architects will say: see, Lu Zhu himself admits his own methods are inferior; he doesn’t dare put them on the same table as ours.”

Lu Zhu said nothing. He rolled the letter back up, carefully, the way one handles an object whose significance lies not in its weight but in its consequences. The dyed linen tie-cord slipped between his fingers — the thread wound in precise, even spirals, each coil pulled tight. His finger paused briefly at the knot.

”Overseer,” he said at last, ”I need time. To go to the high-ground site — the proposed palace district — and drill a set of shallow test bores. I need to see the actual foundation conditions there with my own eyes.”

”By day after tomorrow — no later. I need the high ground’s groundwater table stratigraphy, its soil gradation, its load-bearing stratum depth, its saline-alkali chemical composition. The day after tomorrow, at the top of the second watch, I want it all.”

”I’m not asking for ’finished.’” Lu Zhu spread the survey map flat and drew a circle around the northern end of the high ground, at the palace-district site. ”The data — as much as we can get — I’ll write it all down. One version — using the new method: graded crushed-stone moisture-barrier with compacted fill, the bearing stratum designed to the specific conditions of this high ground. I’ll attach the full technical data and risk analysis. One version — using the traditional method: the complete old-system calculations. I’ll submit them together to Thebes. Let them choose. And when they do — whatever the foundation does afterward — I’ll have data to answer with.”

Sobekh looked down at the drawing, his thumb rubbing several circles over the short ruler’s brass collar, then gave a slow nod. The way he nodded — it was not ”I agree.” It was ”I will give you this much time.” Thirty years in the royal bureaucracy had taught him that this was the only form of concession that could not be turned against you afterward.

”Be precise,” he said, lowering his voice. ”Your opponent on the other side of this is not a technical question. It is the Theban temple’s entrenched power — the faction that holds the sacrificial seals. This so-called inquiry from the Royal Works Institute has Nekhem’s fingerprints all over it. The man has spent years in the Theban priesthood’s system building a machine that converts institutional procedure into personal obstruction. Losing an argument over engineering data is, to him, more disgraceful than losing a lawsuit.”

”I know.”

”Knowing is not the same as having been through Theban court politics.” Sobekh laid the short ruler down on the stone slab. The ruler’s brass tip struck the stone with a brief, hard clack. ”A roomful of senior architects quoting scripture at each other — denouncing each other’s methods by Chapter and verse of the old codes — every sentence worded so flawlessly you can’t slip a blade between the syllables. They smile. They bow. They honor each other’s expertise. And underneath it, they are killing each other. That is not a technical debate. That is murder.”

Lu Zhu did not answer. He simply straightened his stance before the stone slab, looking down at the contour survey map and the letter — the letter was old, still carrying the scent of the Sennu-house archives, a smell of dust and aged papyrus utterly different from the gray-white lime dust of the West Bank. He rolled the map and slid it into his tool case. Then, from the case, he drew out a small, palm-sized prospecting hammer — its head worn mirror-smooth by years of use, its handle grooved with the grip of countless hours in the hand. The hammer’s head was no bigger than a fist, but its steel was good — the striking face polished into a flat, even plane by years of striking rock.

”I’m going up to the high ground to drill test bores,” he said.

”Now?”

”Now. While the sun hasn’t yet turned brutal.”

When he stepped out of the shelter, Seb fell into step behind him.

”I’m coming too,” Seb said. The stone dust on his face was mostly wiped off now, though a small patch of white still clung near his temple. ”Kes is still at the riverbank — he said he’d finish setting the water-level gauge posts and check back. And Mery is due at the south-side survey station; I’ve already told him to take the slope-crew lead down to the riverbank flat and familiarize himself with the terrain. Kamon is heading to the clay-pit to verify the brick-soil sample.”

Seb nodded and turned to leave. His footsteps, crossing the hard crust of the wilderness, receded steadily — each footfall solid and planted, like a man walking from one stone to the next across a ford, never a light, drifting step.

The wilderness wind had shifted. It was no longer the wind that carried the fish-and-mud scent of the river — that wind, when it blew, made you feel that something far away was breathing, that somewhere over the horizon, a cloud heavy with rain was swelling. This wind was dry. It carried fine sand, and when it struck the face, it felt like a layer of fine sandpaper dragging across the lips. Between the teeth, you could feel the faint grit of airborne particles — a sound so small it registered not in the ear but in the jawbone, a fine, sandy crepitation only the body knew. Walking out of the camp gate, Lu Zhu met, head-on, a crew of water-carriers just returning from the river. They bore shoulder-poles, leather water-buckets slung from either end. At their head was an old waterman of perhaps sixty — the skin of his face, scoured by years of riverbank wind, had toughened into a hide of crosshatched grooves.

Lu Zhu pressed his hand against one of the water buckets and watched the water-mark on the sand. What he saw troubled him: the instant the water touched the sand, it vanished — sank straight through, no surface pooling, no slow spread. Clean sand — that kind of penetration speed — the permeability was high. Which meant the ground’s natural compaction was low; the void ratio was high. If they tamped directly onto this without a moisture barrier, the vibration alone would close the sand’s pore space unevenly, and differential settlement would begin before the walls were even up. The solution was a graded gravel-and-sand moisture-break — fine sand at the base to fill the interstices, coarse gravel above to block capillary rise — but getting the gradation right demanded data on particle-size distribution that he did not yet have.

He pressed the sand flat, stared down at the color change in the wetted ground — that single patch of darker, cooler color amid the endless pale gold of the wilderness — then straightened and looked out across the barren plain ahead. The sun was fully up now. Heat shimmer had begun to rise from the ground — the air near the surface warped and wavered, and in the distance, the sand-dunes along the horizon seemed to float, adrift in that distortion, as if beneath them lay the reflection of a city that was not there. The city was not there. And yet he could see it. He had drawn its lines — the north-south axis, the twelve-cubit arterial road, the riverbank dike and the river-harbor granaries, the palace district, the great temple, the commoners’ residential quarter. He saw, too, what had not yet been drawn: the drainage mains buried beneath every street, the drinking-water distribution pools laid out under the temple-front plaza, the individual household cisterns seeded through the residential block — each one connected by its own branch pipe to the water-supply main beneath its lane, the entire network flowing by gravity toward the Nile.

He could see it all in his mind. But before him, there was only the wilderness.

”Starting today,” he said to Seb, to no one, to the empty air and the hard ground and the wind, ”we draw a city onto a blank sheet.”

Seb did not answer. He was looking out across that same boundless wilderness, and his hand, gripping the handle of the prospecting hammer, had tightened. He had not yet learned to speak of cities — but his hand on the hammer had. Once you had held a hammer long enough, the handle wore to the shape of your grip, and the grip learned to read the ground through the strike. Each time a major project was about to begin, Seb would grip that hammer handle — the grooves worn into the wood by years of striking stone fitting into the hollows of his fingers — then clear his throat and say, ”Let’s go.”

Far off, the surface of the Nile carried a drifting band of dawn mist — pale, translucent, the water’s own breath — moving across the river with an unhurried, silken motion. The newly risen sun, shining up through it from below, turned it into a band of translucent gold. The river was the wilderness’s only source of water — and it would be this city’s only lifeline. He had already surveyed the river channel’s cross-section at this bend: more than a thousand cubits wide, the water deep and even, the natural harbor far better than Thebes’.

Seb had already slung the prospecting hammer at his hip, the handle resting exactly over the crest of his hipbone, perfectly balanced. He turned and headed for the high ground at the northern edge of the camp. The hard crust crunched under his steps. Behind him, a young water-carrier — the boy who had been observing the slope-crew’s survey — fell in at his heels, a sheaf of charcoal-marked wooden tally-sticks clutched to his chest, his eyes fixed on the high ground’s foot where the slope began to rise, already roughly recording the elevation-change observations in his mind.

Back at the encampment, the bronze bell rang — the signal for the eighth watch. The first dawn of the full-city survey had begun.

What Lu Zhu did not know — could not know — was that on that same dawn, in Thebes, in a chamber off the great temple’s outer court, Nekhem had handed a folded document to a messenger. Pressed beneath the messenger’s sash was a work-progress report from the quarry — the old quarry’s stone production had failed to meet quota. And at that very moment, at the Dendera quarry a hundred leagues to the south, the quarry foreman reached into the satchel at his hip and turned over a tally-stick — the figure notched into it would, before the day was out, be copied into a dispatch rider’s satchel and sent north, toward Akhetaten, toward the wilderness, toward the new capital where the very first foundation-stake had not yet been driven.

Far off, the surface of the Nile carried that same drifting band of dawn mist. And on the blank new sheet that was this wilderness, the survey had begun.

(End of Chapter 1)
