Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 8: Chapter 8: The First Apprentice — Salvaging Seed from Ruin

Twelve days had passed since the Libyan tribal raid, and Lu Zhu finally found time to head out and survey the wrecked barley fields.

He had not been free to leave any sooner. The ten days after the battle had been swallowed by endless work: transferring the wounded, expanding refugee intake shelters, hammering out gravel boundaries for the makeshift market. In this post-war oasis, time was never counted by days. It was measured by urgent needs: more styptic herbs were needed, more blankets for orphaned children, an ongoing shortage of salt. Only after he drove the final windbreak posts into the ground and rationed out the last stock of salt to every cookhouse could he steal a moment to venture west.

The ravaged barley land sat on the western side of the Oasis Village. Twelve short days prior, it had stretched out like soft green velvet, thick with young barley shoots. Now the ground was churned black mud, snapped palm roots jutted everywhere, and broken grain kernels littered every clod of earth. Most seeds had been ruined — trampled under raiders’ hooves, bloated and rotted by rain, split open under the scorching desert sun.

Yet two small figures were already out in the field, bent low amid the wreckage.

Seb huddled deep in a furrow, still clutching the frayed seed sack his father had left behind. His movements followed the exact planting rhythm he had known all his life: bend low, brush the mud with fingertips, a tiny upward flick. The only difference was the work itself. Twelve days ago, he had pressed seed into fertile soil to grow food. Today, he pulled broken grain from dead dirt to save what little remained.

Hapy crouched beside him, clumsy by comparison. For every salvageable kernel he picked up, two slipped through his fingers and fell back into the muck, yet he never paused to rest. He was Kamon’s young stonemason apprentice, left behind while his master labored at a noble’s estate, and he was determined to learn alongside Seb.

”Is this one still usable?” Hapy held up a barley kernel crisscrossed with a thin crack.

Seb took it and tilted it toward the harsh sunlight filtering through palm fronds. ”The split runs too deep. The germ inside is already dead. Toss it onto the waste pile.”

”You check every single seed against the light one by one?”

”My father taught me this. Even one rotten kernel mixed into the sack will spoil the whole batch.”

Hapy dropped the useless grain onto a small, steadily growing mound of blackened waste seeds, then bent back to his slow work.

Lu Zhu watched from the dirt path, a rough linen sample sack slung over one shoulder. He had seen countless people labor for wages, promotions, or to avoid punishment in his past modern life — but he had never witnessed anyone tend ruined grain with such quiet, sacred gravity. Seb was not merely working a chore. He was clinging to the last trace of his father, dug out from the destruction that had stolen everything.

”Seb.”

The boy lifted his head, flint-dark eyes squinting against midday glare as he spotted the white-robed priest on the path.

”Lord Imhotep.” He stood up, half a sack of recovered grain gripped tight in his palms. ”Did you come to see if this field can be planted again?”

Lu Zhu stepped down off the path and knelt beside the furrowed mud, pressing one finger into the compacted topsoil to test its moisture. ”The surface has been packed hard by raiders’ hooves and crusted over by rain. Water cannot sink through to the lower layers. If you hope to replant next spring, you will need to turn the topsoil to at least the depth of one knuckle. The deeper peat layer beneath is unharmed, though — the field still has life left in it.”

”I will turn every inch I can,” Seb said flat, calm and unyielding, just as his father had spoken when giving planting instructions before the fatal conscription call-up.

”You cannot tackle this entire stretch alone.”

”I know. But I will do whatever I am able.”

Lu Zhu studied the boy. From the day soldiers dragged his father away to Seb’s death in the raid, from burying his father to kneeling alone in broken fields salvaging grain, Seb had never begged for aid or voiced a single complaint. Every night he counted the kernels in his father’s sack. Every dawn he returned to the wasteland to gather what could still live. It was not stubbornness driving him. It was the only way the fifteen-year-old could hold onto the last piece of land his family had owned.

”Seb, when we spoke before, you told me you hoped to learn masonry, to build village defensive walls. So that when Libyan tribes strike again, towns with sturdy barriers do not fall so easily.”

”I still remember.”

”Do you still hold that dream?”

Seb stared down at the sack of grain he had rescued one kernel at a time from the mud — all that remained of his father’s life’s work. He hesitated, then raised his gaze to Lu Zhu.

”I want to learn to build walls, but my father’s field...”

”The field will always be here waiting for you. If you master masonry now, you can farm and build in the years ahead. If you refuse this chance, the next time raiders sweep through, there will be no field left to tend at all.”

A quiet shift crossed Seb’s face, as if a heavy weight pressing on his chest had been gently lifted.

”You would take me as your apprentice?”

”Not only you.” Lu Zhu gestured toward Hapy, still bent over the mud. ”Hapy also wishes to learn. More orphaned youths haul gravel at the intake shelter each day. If you agree to be my first apprentice, you will help me train the other children as you grow skilled.”

Seb glanced over at Hapy, who scratched the back of his neck while still clutching a waste kernel, looking sheepish yet unashamed.

”I work slower than you,” Hapy admitted. ”But I can haul heavy stone nonstop. Teach me how to sift gravel to the proper finger-width grade, and I will carry all your building materials evenly split between us.”

Seb tucked the seed sack inside his simple linen tunic, dropped to one knee on the churned earth — the only solemn gesture a farm boy knew to seal a vow.

”Teach me to build walls. I will help you rebuild all these wrecked lands.”

Lu Zhu leaned forward and lifted him back to his feet. He would not accept a gesture of supplication from the boy he planned to guide out of ruin.

”No need to kneel. Starting tomorrow morning, report to the granary compound at first light. Your first lesson will not be laying mud bricks. You will learn to read construction sketches. Imset has drawn simplified diagrams for grain pits and low defensive barriers. Copy them with charcoal until you can draw a three-layer gravel moisture barrier perfectly from memory.”

”Copy drawings?” Confusion flickered across Seb’s face for two heartbeats before hard resolve settled over his features. He was unfamiliar with this new way of learning, but he would not allow himself to fail. ”Very well. I will draw every day.”

”Second task: seek out Kamon whenever he returns from the noble’s estate. Ask him to teach you how to trim mud brick edges with a stone chisel. Gravel foundations are the base of all construction, but solid walls demand proper brickwork. You begin mastering this craft starting today.”

Seb nodded once, concise and steady. He handed the seed sack to Hapy for safekeeping. ”Do not lose this,” he ordered, then set off toward the granary compound without another word.

Lu Zhu watched his lean silhouette shrink across the barren barley field. He recalled a foreman from his old world saying the hardest part of training apprentices was not teaching techniques — it was finding people with natural diligence. Once you found them, they would sift gravel until their fingers blistered without a single word of protest.

Hapy jogged over to the dirt path, sack slung over one arm, and blurted out a sudden question. ”Master Kamon’s apprentice by trade — does that make me your apprentice too?”

”Kamon remains your formal master. While he is gone to the noble’s land, you will train under my direction. If you sharpen your skills instead of wasting time by the time he returns, I will speak with him to let you stay and learn alongside us long-term.”

”What counts as being useless, then?”

That mishap with pickled fish does not count as wasted potential, Lu Zhu said with a faint smile. It was merely a miscalculation of salt proportions, not a flaw in your work ethic. I will walk you through proper salt-to-fish measurement formulas later.

Hapy’s grin split his face wide. He hoisted the seed sack higher and sprinted to catch up with Seb’s retreating figure.

——————————————————————————————

The first structure Seb and Hapy rebuilt together was the dilapidated storage lean-to at the rear of the granary. It had long been used to pile loose gravel and palm-fiber rope. Lu Zhu gave them one single rule: draft your own blueprints, source all building supplies independently, complete construction without his direct aid. He would observe their progress, but he would not warn them of errors until they discovered the flaws themselves.

On the first morning, Seb spent hours sketching a roof frame: two vertical palm timber posts, one horizontal crossbeam, layered reed thatch overhead. The lines were crooked and unrefined, yet every structural logic held true. Hapy volunteered to gather materials, spending half a day helping a pottery vendor haul clay jars in exchange for two palm poles and a small bundle of reed thatch. He returned brimming with pride, only for Seb to spot the flaw instantly.

”These two support posts are mismatched. One is half a cubit shorter than the other.”

Hapy frowned and studied the short timber from every angle. ”We can pile gravel beneath its base to even it out.”

”Gravel bedding distributes foundation weight, but it cannot compensate for uneven vertical supports. This short piece cannot serve as a main post — it must be repurposed as a side brace.”

Hapy crouched to stare at the timber, then straightened quickly. ”I will head back to the market and trade labor for a matching pole of equal length.”

”What labor will you offer to barter with?”

”The dried fruit vendor mentioned needing a bird-proof frame built over his stall last week. I can build it for him in exchange for timber.”

Seb rolled his eyes faintly as Hapy darted off, already rushing back to the village market.

By the second afternoon, the small outbuilding stood complete: two equal palm support posts, one solid crossbeam, dual gravel-filled side braces, three layers of reed thatch, and a final top covering of dried palm fronds to shed rainwater. Seb knelt in the doorway and studied their handiwork for a long stretch of time.

”The whole structure leans south,” he said quietly.

Hapy leaned over his shoulder to peer at the walls. ”How can you tell?”

”The post foundations were not dug deep enough on the southern side. The south base sits one finger’s depth higher than the north one. The tilt is subtle to the naked eye, but any level tool would prove it uneven.”

”We do not have a leveling tool to measure with.”

Seb thought quickly, grabbed a length of palm fiber cord, tied a shard of broken pottery to its midpoint, then fastened the two ends to the crossbeam. They both stepped back to watch the clay fragment drift southward.

”You are right,” Hapy sighed. He dropped to his knees and began clearing gravel around the south foundation without hesitation. ”I will re-excavate it one finger deeper.”

Seb knelt beside him to shift loose stone and mud. As the low evening sun slanted over the granary walls, the two boys dug out the uneven base and reset the post to the correct depth.

When Lu Zhu returned from checking the refugee intake shelters, he found two mud-caked youths sitting on the ground, each holding half a cold mixed-grain flatbread, staring up at the newly realigned crossbeam.

”Foundational issue fixed?” Lu Zhu asked.

”South post dug one finger deeper — the beam sits level now,” Seb replied, swallowing a mouthful of bread. ”But we laid the palm frond rain cover beneath the thatch instead of on top. We will need to strip the whole top layer and redo it tomorrow.”

”Tearing off the fronds wastes an entire bundle of thatch,” Hapy added glumly.

”I will earn replacement thatch by building the fruit vendor’s bird frame tomorrow,” Hapy resolved immediately. ”That labor will cover the lost materials.”

Lu split his own evening meal — two cold barley flatbreads — and handed half to Hapy. He offered no lavish praise, no harsh criticism, only calm guidance.

”You corrected the foundation properly. Laying the thatch out of order is a mistake, not a failure. The true error would be failing to notice the flaw at all. You caught it yourselves, so no work has gone to waste.”

Seb took the bread without speaking. Hapy mumbled softly, mouth full of grain cake, ”Tomorrow before I build the bird frame, I will ask you to sketch a blueprint first. I do not want to tear down another crooked structure again.”

Seb rolled his eyes playfully and stuffed the rest of his bread into his mouth. Lu Zhu turned back toward the granary compound, the faint ghost of a smile tugging at his lips as he listened to the two boys behind him already debating tomorrow’s work: who would strip the old thatch, who would press new palm fronds, who would hold the ladder, who would pass cord and stakes. There was no complaining, only clear planning.

——————————————————————————————

The dried ration disaster struck on the fourth day.

Lu Zhu left early that morning to meet Imset at the remote shrine, cross-checking directional markers on the medicinal garden construction map. He left Seb and Hapy in charge of granary maintenance and ration preparation. When he returned at mid-afternoon, a sharp burnt grain stench hit him long before he reached the rear courtyard. He recognized the acrid scent instantly — charred barley flour, overbaked into useless ash.

In the yard, a flat stone sat over cold embers, lined with disc-shaped lumps that had once been travel rations. Every single cake was charred deep brown, nearly black. Hapy’s cheeks were streaked with ash from the flaring fire; Seb stood rigid beside him, waving palm fronds to disperse the smoke drifting toward the granary path.

”What have you been making?” Lu Zhu questioned.

”Dry field rations,” Seb answered, voice tight with frustration.

”What recipe did you follow?”

”The travel cakes you described at the intake shelter: barley flour mixed with minced meat, pressed into solid discs that require no boiling while marching. We have tried three batches today.” Seb gestured to the ruined cakes. ”The first dissolved from too much water. The second burned on the outside while remaining raw inside. This third batch fares no better.”

Lu Zhu picked up one broken ration cake. It crumbled apart in his palm, revealing a grey, mushy core lacking any solid dough structure.

”What ingredients did you mix together from the start?”

”Barley flour, minced meat, a pinch of salt, a small amount date paste for sweetness,” Hapy answered cautiously.

”You blended meat and date paste into dry flour before kneading the dough with water?”

”We did.”

”That is the core flaw. Barley flour must be kneaded with water alone for the length of two oil lamps to build natural gluten. Only once the dough forms a solid base can you fold in meat and fruit paste. Mixing soft additives upfront breaks the dough’s binding structure, so the cakes collapse and burn.”

Seb and Hapy exchanged a weary glance. They had spent the whole afternoon repeating the flawed process without blame or argument, quietly listening to the proper baking principles.

”We will re-knead fresh dough tomorrow?” Hapy asked.

”Tomorrow is the right time. First scrub all ash from the stone — waving palm fronds will not clean it fully. Use damp linen cloths on warm stone surfaces, dry cloths for ash channels. Do not reverse the order of cleaning steps.”

Seb had already fetched a scrap of worn linen from the storage shed, soaked it in the water jar, and begun wiping char residue from the stone slab with steady focus. Hapy knelt beside him to tend the ash drainage channel, noticing the burn blisters on Hapy’s palms from flipping hot cakes and silently swapping cleaning duties with him.

Lu Zhu glanced back as he left the courtyard, watching the two boys huddle beside the cold fire, a sack of intact barley flour waiting for the next day’s attempts. They had not surrendered, only waited for a fresh chance to learn.

By the fourth day onward, Mery began lingering around the intake shelter every chance he got. He was barely ten years old, with sharp cheekbones and tangled black curls, his linen tunic patched six layers thick. His only possession was a small clay jar holding less than three bowls of barley grain, which he counted meticulously each evening before covering with scrap cloth and tucking into the shelter’s corner. He never initiated conversation, yet when Nefer’s women’s crew built temporary storage sheds, he silently joined the gravel hauling work on his own initiative. He always stacked gravel in the shelter’s inner corners — two walls creating better air circulation to keep grain dry, a trick he had learned growing up in his grain-merchant father’s storehouse.

One afternoon mid-gravel haul, Hapy spotted the quiet young boy carefully piling stone in the shelter’s corners and paused to question him.

”Why do you always stack gravel in the inner corners?”

”Corners have two outer walls. More airflow to keep grain free of damp rot than open center spaces.”

Hapy picked up a loose stone and studied the gaps between stacked gravel, processing the logic he had learned from Kamon’s construction work. ”Your family ran grain storehouses before?”

”My father was a brewing grain merchant. Our storehouse collapsed in a storm. After that, we had nothing left except this jar of barley.” Mery nodded toward the clay pot tucked in the shelter corner.

Hapy said nothing, but on his next gravel run he brought a flat stone slab over to Mery. ”Slide this under your jar. Bugs crawl up bare dirt, the stone blocks them.”

Mery carefully wedged the slab beneath his grain jar, then stacked a thin ring of gravel around its base as an extra barrier against pests. Lu Zhu watched the two silent youths debating stone elevation in the shelter corner from the shade of a palm tree, thinking of the foreman’s words from his past life: The finest craftsmen are not taught talent — they are forged by loss, hunger, and the last precious thing they refuse to abandon. Hapy was a discarded apprentice left behind after battle, Mery a grain merchant’s orphan clinging to a single jar of seed. Both endured hardship yet refused to break.

Kes appeared formally in the granary rear courtyard on the sixth morning. For days prior, he had slept curled beside the gravel pile outside the intake shelter, never speaking to anyone, only accepting the upside-down ceramic bowl Nefer left out for him each dawn and dusk. He washed the bowl each night before placing it back on the stone slab without a word of thanks.

Lu Zhu found him hunched over the dirt, tracing lines with a scrap of rusted copper wire.

”What are you drawing?” Lu Zhu knelt beside the boy.

Kes did not lift his eyes, only marked a circular center point with the wire. ”My clan’s livestock pen. The circle is the central water trough. In summer all animals gather there to drink. Radiating gravel channels carry spilled water outward into sand to stop mud buildup, and an outer wall blocks desert night winds.” He set the copper wire down flat. ”My grandfather built this pen. When Libyan raiders burned our camp, it was the last standing structure left intact.”

”You know how to draft construction layouts?”

”I only ever saw this one pen. My clan had no literate priests or master builders — only my grandfather who knew how to shape land for shelter. I have no land left to build on now.”

Lu Zhu pulled a folded sheet of blank papyrus from his robe and held it out to Kes. ”Use charcoal to redraw this pen properly on papyrus, instead of dirt.”

Kes’s hands trembled slightly as he took the papyrus, overwhelmed to finally have a surface to preserve his clan’s only surviving design. He worked the rest of the morning, drafting trough, drainage channels, support posts — proportions imperfect, yet every functional connection clear. Alongside the channels he scrawled rough Nubian-inflected hieroglyphs: Water flows from high to low; gravel filters sand; channels must never clog.

Lu Zhu took the finished sketch and wrote a small charcoal note on the papyrus margin: Kes’s First Architectural Draft — Nubian Livestock Pen Drainage Design. For permanent archive storage.

Kes spotted the word Archive written on the page, and the tremor left his hands. He carefully folded the papyrus and tucked it inside his coarse linen sack, alongside half a loaf of hard barley bread and a length of palm cord. He spoke no word of gratitude, yet every careful fold of the paper spoke volumes of how much this drawing meant to him.

——————————————————————————————

Kamon returned to the West Bank on the eighth afternoon, riding a chestnut horse dressed in bleached linen robes, a copper chisel tucked in his tool pouch. Thirty years of masonry work left deep permanent creases in his hands, no amount of noble silk could hide them.

He dismounted and walked straight to the intake shelter, where Nefer wove new reed mats to replace rain-rotted roofing. Her hands paused for half a heartbeat when she spotted him, then resumed her work without breaking stride.

”How are the lotus carving commissions progressing for the noble’s estate?”

Kamon’s voice carried a quiet, heavy dissonance, no longer sharp with anger or hollow despair. ”Harder than laying mud brick. The noble expands his land holdings east of the city. Yesterday I watched his stewards tear down a farmer’s mud homestead wall. The family held no official land deed, even though their ancestors settled the land during the old famine before the pharaoh’s reign. Under current temple law, the land belongs fully to the noble now.”

His chisel scraped against a palm carving as he spoke, his mason’s hands never idle. ”An elderly woman knelt amid the broken bricks, picking up each clay block one by one. Her father’s fingerprints were pressed into each piece before firing — all she had left of him, etched into mud.”

Nefer set down her reed mat. ”Will you return to the estate tomorrow?”

Kamon fell silent for a long moment, polishing the copper chisel clean and sliding it back into his tool pouch alongside cemetery construction papyrus sketches. ”I still have a month and a half left on the contract.”

”And after the contract ends?”

”I do not know yet.” He turned and walked away, heading neither toward the granary, nor the shelter, nor the long road back to Memphis — a man still unsure which path to take.

Lu Zhu watched him disappear into the palm grove from the granary steps. A mason’s skilled hands would never stay content carving decorative lotus flowers for wealthy nobles forever. Sooner or later, he would return to mud brick, and to the ordinary people who truly needed walls built to survive.
