Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 46: Chapter 10: Materials Crisis — Local Innovation Breaks the Deadlock

I.

The shortages — of waterproof mortar, of dense-grade timber, and of fired clay drainage pipe — struck in the same week, from three directions at once.

The Akhetaten construction site had, by then, spread across four fronts: the granary foundations and wall courses, the residential ward’s AT-type dwelling footings and walls, the artisan workshop ward’s production sheds, and the first sections of the main drainage canal’s southern extension. Every front was consuming materials at a rate that the external supply lines could not sustain. The supply routes from Thebes, from the Nubian timber forests, from the riverbank depots — all of them were being systematically tightened. This was not a random market fluctuation. The Theban temple system was, through its river checkpoints, transit warehouses, and merchant guilds, methodically tightening its grip on Akhetaten’s supply network.

Meru was the first to discover that all three supply lines had been cut at once.

Meru had spent half his life in harbors, warehouses, and caravan depots. He had run long-distance trade routes from Nubia to the northern reaches of Egypt since he was a boy, and had later shifted to building-material supply. His sensitivity to inventory numbers was almost physiological — the digits on a cargo manifest registered in his eyes like a pulse. Every third day, without fail, he checked the building-material warehouse inventories himself. It was not a regulation; it was a habit carved into his bones by a loss he had taken years ago on the Theban dockside — three shiploads of hardwood timber he had failed to count properly, two of which a middleman had siphoned off and resold downriver to a temple construction site before he even realized they were missing. Since that day, he had never trusted anyone else’s inventory count.

That evening, he sat as usual in his small, half-buried store-shelter — one of the earliest structures built in the Akhetaten encampment. Inside, material samples were stacked everywhere: a bundle of hardwood cross-section blocks in the corner, several fired-clay pipe fragments from different kiln batches on the stone slab, a brick-form mold still wrapped in its original coarse-linen transport cloth. The air carried a mingled scent of dry wood shavings, old grease, and aged desert dust — to Meru’s nose, this was the smell of safety.

He had been checking the waterproof mortar inventory against the upstream shipping records and the harbor receipts. As he ran his finger down the latest column of figures — the numbers nearly halved. Two weeks ago, the general ledger had recorded nearly thirty clay jars of waterproof mortar in reserve. Now there was barely enough to coat the roofs of the four granaries under construction, and not enough for a second coat. He lifted his oil lamp and walked to the deepest storage corner of the shelter, peeling back the leather cover of the storage jar. The bottom of the jar held only a thin, oily sheen that gleamed darkly in the lamplight. The latest shipment from Thebes, which should have arrived the previous week, had been turned back. Meru’s contact merchant had sent word through a boatman: the temple faction had bought up three successive shipments of waterproof mortar at every river transfer point, paying above market price to corner the supply.

He pressed his palm flat against the pile of papers spread across his worktable — feeling the grit of sand and the dry crackle of papyrus beneath his skin — then took a blank sheet and a charcoal stick worn down to less than half his index finger’s length, and wrote a terse alert. Then, tucking the paper under his arm, he crossed the encampment’s gravel paths in the gathering dark and delivered it personally to Lu Zhu and Sobekh.

When Lu Zhu took the alert, he had just returned from Hapy’s quarry. His whole face was coated in pale limestone dust, mixed with sweat into a plaster-like crust from his cheekbones to his jawline. He read the alert, said nothing, set it face-down on the stone table, and walked to the materials chart he had been updating for days. He had already drawn a thick charcoal frame around the hardwood column on the chart. That hardwood — it came from a single, narrow river valley in southern Nubia, its grain so dense and its resilience so high that it surpassed even the Lebanese cedar used for Thebes’s great temple roof beams. For long-span granary roof beams, it was almost irreplaceable. He turned to the bottom of the chart, and in the blank margin beside the framed column, he wrote two characters in charcoal: ”Cut off.”

But Lu Zhu did not pause. He looked out at the pale gray sky beyond the shelter — the sun was staining the western dunes and the clouds a long band of orange-gray — and wiped the stone dust from his eyelashes with his sleeve. ”I’ll find something else. But first we need to know what we can actually use instead of this hardwood.”

II.

He and Kes spent the better part of a day re-evaluating the local timber’s fiber density and joinery suitability at the quarry’s northern edge, where a sparse, wind-battered stand of acacia scrub clung to the sand.

This was a problem he had been avoiding for a long time: the Akhetaten wilderness had trees, but they were either too spindly or too brittle. Before the supply crisis, he could afford to be selective. Now that the temple had cut his supply line, he had to find an answer among the options he had previously dismissed. He called Kes, and together they walked to the acacia scrub at the quarry’s northern edge. They cut test sections from every accessible trunk, Lu Zhu pressing each fresh cut to his nose and inhaling, Kes counting the annual rings with a length of broken copper wire.

They eventually settled on a medium-sized acacia species — dense-grained, its rings so tight they were almost invisible to the naked eye, tough enough to survive the harsh desert sun. But the tree had a weakness: it grew short, and its heartwood often contained fine longitudinal stress cracks — the tree’s internal response to extreme water scarcity, tiny fissures that ran along the grain. If left untreated, these cracks would propagate outward under load. Lu Zhu mentally broke the problem into three parts: short, but spliceable; crack-prone, but the crack path was controllable. In the assessment meeting, he had already calculated that the optimal splice length for the short acacia sections was between two and a half and three cubits — any longer and the splice joints would be too many; any shorter and there would not be enough joinery to maintain beam stiffness. That dimension later proved to match the carrying capacity of the small, shallow-draft punts they would use on the Nubian back-channel.

Then he recalled something he and Kes had seen two years earlier, at an old boatyard on the West Bank: the boat-builders there soaked acacia planks in a bath of slaked lime before bending them into hull shapes. The lime solution, as it penetrated the wood’s pores, would displace excess resin and deposit a thin layer of calcium carbonate on the cell walls — a barrier against insect attack and moisture penetration. After the lime soak, the wood was slow-dried, and then joined with dovetail splices — each short section cut with a swallowtail tenon and socket, driven tight with dry acacia wood wedges. Multiple short sections could thus be joined into a single long-span beam. He explained the process to Kes, who crouched on the ground and, with a charcoal stick, sketched the splice joint layout along the centerline of several scrap sections.

Another line of investigation began almost simultaneously. Kes had river sand samples brought up from the Nile bed — coarse, irregular grains of varying sizes. He spread the sand on sheets of waste papyrus and sorted it by screen mesh: the finest grains for filling the pores in the fired-clay matrix; the medium grains as aggregate skeleton; the coarsest gravel as a cushion layer between the stone casing and the clay inner pipe. Then he took kiln-reject alkali clay from the pottery works, crushed it, and mixed it in different proportions with the graded sand. He fired small test blocks in a miniature kiln. The first batches all exploded in the kiln — the expansion rates of the two different alkali clays had not yet been matched. The third batch, after adjusting the clay ratio, still had a slightly loose cross-section. The fourth batch — when he opened the kiln door, the test block’s compressive strength, recorded in his notebook, came out a full notch higher than the standard fired-clay pipe material used in the cities. Kes set down his hammer and said to the apprentice helping him record: ”Go get Kamon.”

He then had Kamon come to assess the feasibility: could the local modified clay pipe, lined with a stone casing, be manufactured as a municipal-grade composite drainage pipe resistant to both internal and external pressure? Kamon took one of the test blocks and turned it over in his hands several times, then had Kes wrap the outer wall of a test pipe section with a half-casing of waste hornblende stone. He studied the seepage line sketched in sand on the worktable, and then began counting on his fingers — running through the available waste stone from Hapy’s quarry, the time a stonemason needed to carve each casing, and the resulting pipe diameter and wall thickness. When he finished, he said: ”It’ll work. Start.”

That evening, Hapy marked out a small test area beside the quarry with a rope of crushed stone — roughly six feet square — as a temporary workshop for making the test pipes. He had a trusted old stonemason from Kamon’s crew begin carving the first plain-ended stone casing. The old mason lifted the selected hornblende stone block, aligned it with a handful of damp sand, and then, with a small hammer he had used for nearly twenty years, began chipping the outer edge of the casing — careful, deliberate strokes, spaced a finger-width apart. On the first pipe, the outer wall had a slight deviation, barely two finger-widths off — a visible tool mark from the first chisel-stroke, slightly crooked. But the casing wall was tight, and after the water test passed, he coated the joint inside and out with a thin layer of prepared mortar. This pipe was later called the Akhetaten composite drainage pipe. In later usage across the western district’s drain network, its failure rate proved significantly lower than the old fired-clay pipes, while its cost was almost entirely in the stone casing — which could be had for free from waste rock — and the river sand, which cost nothing at all.

III.

Hapy had not been idle.

Since the quarry’s output had doubled, its waste had doubled as well. The old approach was to cart it away and dump it. Now Hapy looked at every piece of discarded stone with fresh eyes: waste did not mean useless. Some thin stone flakes were ideal for road gravel; some coarse gravel was perfect for the cushion layer between the pipe casing and the clay inner wall.

He reorganized the entire waste-stone dumping area. First, he sorted all the quarry waste into two broad categories: fines — screened out and set aside; and four usable grades — fine sand, medium sand, coarse gravel, and fine river-rounded pebbles. Each grade was stacked in its own compartment, each compartment marked with a charcoal label indicating its primary use. Any foreman standing before those piles could see at a glance what to take. Then he linked his grading system directly to Meru’s road-gravel needs and drainage-pipe emergency prefabrication raw material extraction — all drawn from his graded piles by specification. When Meru came to take material for the first time, he stood before the piles for several silent breaths, recalculating in his head: under the old system, random shoveling from the waste heap wasted labor and often yielded stones too big or too small, clogging channels. Now, the grading system shifted the entire procurement pressure to this central internal supply point. Later, Meru would transplant the same method to the management of scattered drainage blind channels and temporary line prefabrication across the city. From then on, the temple’s stranglehold on imported materials was quietly loosened from within.

IV.

By the time word of the materials crisis reached the encampment, Sobekh was already in a meeting with a Theban envoy.

The envoy was a man in his late forties, who had ridden eight days from Thebes. He brought a dispatch that began with routine expressions of concern about the project’s progress — and then shifted to an implied message: if your progress stalls because of the material shortages, you will have to accept a renegotiated price baseline. After Sobekh briefed him on the new capital’s uninterrupted progress, the envoy was led to Kes’s test bay for the composite pipes. He controlled his expression — but his hesitation gave him away. He had come from Thebes expecting a frozen construction site, choked by supply cuts. What he saw instead was a working, independent supply chain he had no ready response to. He said nothing further, tucked the dispatch back into his leather document case, and left.

Later, the encampment’s administrative scribe wrote a brief weekly report. At the bottom of the material column, he added only a few lines: ”Waterproof mortar produced locally. Timber spliced from local acacia. Pipes made from stone-cased local clay. The expected three-month supply collapse has not occurred. Akhetaten continues to produce drawings and build.”

V.

Lu Zhu knew how fragile this hard-won balance was.

Every one of these alternatives had just emerged from the test bay, and every one still carried a thin safety margin. If the coming rainy season arrived early, if another core material went into shortfall, if Thebes issued another closure notice while simultaneously blocking the Nubian timber route — this system, already strained to its limits, could face a real structural collapse.

He called everyone to the survey shelter — Meru, Kes, Hapy, and Mery, all present. The oil lamp’s wick had been pressed low, its flame small, casting the fatigue on every face into deep, shadowed relief. On the stone table, he laid out the four small stones he had gathered from the experimental waste pile that day: a fragment of waterproof mortar, a thin dark-wood slice from the acacia splice test, a shard of composite-pipe inner lining, and a smooth river-rounded cobble — arranged in a row along a faint, shallow line of water-stain left on the stone table’s surface.

”What we’re holding back is not a storm that will pass. It’s a systematic strangulation aimed at every critical point in the new capital’s construction.” His finger moved from the first stone to the second. ”We’ve already developed three workable alternatives from the ground up. But before these replacements face their first real test, we need to secure two long-term systems: the Nubian backup timber route, and the riverbank natural asphalt seepage supply channel. These have to be put in place before the temple realizes where our true shortages lie.”

He picked up the fourth stone — the river-rounded cobble — and held it between thumb and forefinger for a moment. ”This one — we already have it at our feet.” Then he pushed the second stone — the dark wood slice — to the center of the table.

Kes pulled out the updated full-city node network plan. ”If we’re forced, under extreme shortage, to reorder the material allocation priorities across all projects — what should be first?”

Lu Zhu’s answer came without hesitation. ”The granaries. Because if the granaries fail, people don’t just go hungry. Social trust collapses entirely.” He pushed the dark wood slice forward another notch. ”No one will remember whether a canal wall was lined with local or imported pipe. But they will remember, exactly, whether their stored grain stayed dry through the rainy season. Lose the granaries — you lose the people’s trust.”

Everyone rose to leave. The small stones were taken by their owners — Kes tucked the clay shard into his belt pouch, Meru took the waterproof mortar fragment, Hapy pocketed the coarse sand grain he had used for the ratio test. Sobekh did not leave with the others. He went to his shelter and began drafting the formal application to the Theban Royal Works Institute, requesting that Akhetaten’s new composite drainage pipe be certified as the official alternative standard for the new capital, with provisional approval and inclusion in the national materials registry.

That night, Kes sat at his small workbench. He held the first composite pipe section he had made — the one with two crooked thin lines on the inner lining where the clay had settled unevenly. He had thought about sawing it off and discarding it. But he didn’t. He placed the pipe in the shadow of the oil lamp, measured the pouring angle of the plain end against the mold, and cut a small, precise notch into the scrap-wood board beside it — from this moment forward, that notch was the master mold origin for Akhetaten’s stone-cased composite drainage pipe.

VI.

Meru did not return to his store-shelter after leaving the meeting. He walked along the gravel path north of the encampment toward the river dock and sat down on an old stone platform. Before him, the dark waters of the Nile flowed black and silent — no moon tonight, only the faintest trace of silver ripples where starlight touched the surface. He sat on the stone platform, running through three years of material shipment records through the Theban docks, shipment by shipment. His memory held nearly three hundred manifest faces — supplier names, shipping dates, transit dockyards, boat captains’ nicknames and habitual routes. One by one, he pulled these fragments from his mind, swept a patch of sand clean beside the platform, and traced a simplified transit-node map with his finger. Seven transit points that had once been usable — and every single one of them, in his mind, now showed red.

He rose from the platform, turned, and walked to the dock workers’ fire pit. The night watchmen were three old Thebans, led by a gray-haired boatman named Henu, who had worked the Theban docks for thirty years. When Henu saw Meru approach, he shifted aside on the stone ring around the fire, making room — these two men had shared a dry flatbread together on the docks when Meru was still running cargo.

”Thebes — is there any route we don’t know about?” Meru pitched his voice low, for Henu’s ears only.

Henu snapped a dry reed into three pieces and tossed them into the fire. ”Since the temple’s harbor master took over, every shipment bound for Akhetaten has to pass through a temple inspection shed before loading. Waterproof mortar was reclassified as ’military material’ — they say the frontier garrisons need the bitumen for fortification repairs — so Akhetaten’s shipments have to wait in line. But the frontier garrisons have never drawn that much waterproof mortar; I’ve seen the release orders myself. The fired pipe — that’s worse. They don’t stop the shipments. They stop the kilns. Six old pottery kilns around Thebes — if the kiln master takes an Akhetaten order, the temple’s fuel allotment office won’t issue him a kiln-firing permit.”

Meru said nothing. He gripped the small piece of dried acacia wood he carried as a talisman, then released it. Kiln fuel under temple control — he had known this chain existed, but he had never imagined they would use it at such a fundamental level.

”Is there anything left? No matter how small.”

Henu was silent for a long stretch. ”There is one. But it’s not stable. There’s a tributary in Nubia, not on the temple’s river-registry — too narrow for the big boats. Its outlet bypasses Thebes completely, flowing through a shallow sandbar channel into the Nile’s main current. If you can find small, flat-bottomed boats — shallow enough to pole across the sandbars — you could get four or five small shipments through before the dry season closes the channel.”

”What can they carry?”

”Single pieces no longer than three cubits. Anything heavier — the punts would ground on the sandbars. Bulk waterproof mortar, fired pipe, long-span whole beams — none of it.”

Three cubits. The number clicked in Meru’s mind against Lu Zhu’s earlier assessment — the optimal acacia splice section length was between two and a half and three cubits. This was no coincidence. It was a gap just large enough for the light to pass through.

Meru stood and placed his hand on Henu’s shoulder. ”Don’t talk about this too much at night. I’ll confirm it, then we move.”

He returned to his store-shelter, spread the old account book across his knees — the one that recorded a dozen informal river landings along the Nubian route — and turned the pages. Several landing points, especially two natural coves in northern Nubia sheltered by basalt cliffs and reeds, could still take small flat-bottomed punts. He noted the information in charcoal on the book’s flyleaf, closed it, and set it on the stone table. The lamp oil had burned to the bottom, and the shelter was completely dark.

VII.

Before dawn, the three lamps at the quarry’s southern test area were already lit.

Kes had been crouched at his miniature kiln for nearly a watch and a half. The kiln was built from waste hornblende stone, and the data from the first three firing rounds was already carved into a waste stone slab in rows and columns. The first round: too much alkali clay, the test block split. The second: too much sand, the block crumbled under compression. The third — the one before sunset — he had removed the coarse gravel from the aggregate and replaced it entirely with medium-grade screened sand, while reducing the alkali clay proportion to sixty percent of the previous batch.

Now he was preparing the fourth round. He spread the dry sand on a flat stone beside the kiln, held it close to the lamp, and squinted for a long time — he picked out several oversized grains and flicked them, one by one, into the waste pile below the stone table. Across the test area, Hapy had made several trips from the fine-sand storage pond, bringing enough graded sand for four more firing rounds, and had drawn a straight charcoal line on the ground marking the shortest cart path from the storage pond to the kiln — brushing the gravel and weeds aside with his palm.

The first set of test blocks for the fourth round was loaded into the kiln, the door sealed, and the fire lit. The firewood crackled briefly, and the smoke from the kiln chimney shifted from the pale gray of initial ignition to a deepening gray-blue. Kes’s gaze never left the smoke’s color. His left eye had narrowed to that sharp, focused point — not measuring distance, but reading the smoke. A man who had fired hundreds of kiln-loads could read the temperature curve from the smoke’s color, density, and the speed of its rise.

Hapy brought the first stone casing to the measuring table beside the kiln. He wiped its inner wall with a damp coarse-linen cloth, then began running his fingertip along the wall from one end to the other, checking at roughly finger-width intervals. His finger stopped at one spot, pressed and released, then pressed again. He felt a small protrusion — a hard, angular hornblende crystal embedded in the stone surface. He scraped it smooth with a small polished copper tool, and ran his finger over it again. It was flush with the surrounding surface.

The first kiln-load reached its target temperature after roughly a watch and a quarter — the firing time Kes had worked out from the previous three rounds. When the time came, he chiseled off the kiln door’s seal and, with tongs, lifted the test blocks out onto the cooling sand one by one. Six blocks emerged: four intact, one with a fine surface crack running perpendicular to the firing axis, and one with a thin spot on the inner wall where the clay had bonded unevenly with the stone casing. Kes marked the thin-spot block ”4-3-thin” and set it on the left side of the stone table — his fixed position for ”usable but not recommended.” He took two of the intact blocks and ran a water-pressure test — filling them with water, sealing the ends, and counting to roughly one hundred and twenty heartbeats. The outer walls remained dry. He then tested their compressive strength with a small copper hammer — no cracking. He set down the hammer and carved a line on the experiment stone in the fourth-round data column: ”Compression pass. Water seal pass.”

Then he said: ”Fifth round — full-scale pipe sections, two per load, using this formula. Fire it.”

Hapy was already moving. He carried two certified stone casings from the reserve pile — each with a short charcoal vertical line on the casing’s outer edge, his ”checked” mark. He set them side by side on the loading table, then coated the inner wall of each with a thin layer of talc paste — to prevent the clay inner pipe from tearing if the stone casing deformed under external pressure. Kes dry-mixed the fifth-round clay in the mixing trough — one hundred turns — then added water incrementally until the clay balled without dripping. He spread the clay evenly against the inner wall of each stone casing: first a thin layer, smoothed with a bronze scraper in a single direction, then a second layer, half the thickness of the first. The kiln door was sealed again, and the second firing began.

The fifth load reached its target temperature. When Kes opened the kiln this time, his expression changed — not a smile, but the fact that his narrowed left eye did not widen again at the moment of opening. Inside the kiln, the two full-scale pipe sections had a matte brick-red inner surface, with no visible cracking. After the pipes cooled, the inner clay wall and the stone casing were uniformly bonded. He poured a ladle of water through one pipe — it ran cleanly out the other end, the outer wall bone dry. At the pipe’s joint, even the faint damp halo that had appeared on earlier test pipes — a wet trace less than a grain of rice wide — was now completely gone. He turned the pipe over and measured the pouring angle at the plain end against the notch cut into the scrap-wood board. The angle locked perfectly into the joint arc. The first pipe had been crooked. The second had been passable. By the fifth, it could be reliably replicated, without luck, using the mold.

He straightened and said to Hapy: ”Go get Kamon.” Then he sat down against the workbench edge — not from exhaustion, but from the quiet release of a man who had just confirmed the path was open. Hapy did not leave immediately. He set a jar of cool water beside Kes, then turned and walked toward the encampment. By dawn, Kamon’s footsteps had woken them both — Kes leaning against the workbench corner, Hapy curled in a heap of coarse linen beside the sand pond, both covered by a single stone-dust-stained old robe.

Kamon stood before the fifth-round full-scale pipe section, which had already passed the water-pressure test and been drained dry, and did not touch it at first. He stood before it for a long ten breaths, then picked it up and turned it over in his hands several times. He pressed his thumb against the inner clay wall and ran it along his standard measuring rule, then began counting on his fingers — calculating the cost and production rate of the hornblende casings. When he finished, he placed his hand on the hammer handle and tapped it twice with his fingers. That was Kamon’s way of saying ”this is settled.” No words, just two taps on the handle. The sound was dull, not loud, but in the quarry’s morning wind it carried from the stone table to the stone floor beneath Hapy’s feet.

Kes handed Kamon the better of the two fifth-round pipe sections. Kamon took it with both hands and placed it on a wooden rack on the front wall of the quarry tool-shelter — the rack had originally held hammers and chisels, but now it held the first composite drainage pipe, manufactured from entirely local materials, that had passed a standard water-pressure test. He did not leave immediately. His thumb traced the joint line between the pipe’s inner and outer walls, back and forth — not calculating, just confirming with his hands.

Hapy, meanwhile, had recounted the available hornblende stone casings against the graded waste-pile inventory — he needed to know how many more casings the waste pile could supply if they needed to produce fifty pipes in the coming month. He wrote his count in three lines on the white lime-marking area beside the charcoal-labeled piles. When he finished, he rubbed the stone dust from his fingertips onto the ground.

VIII.

But even with the composite pipe passing its fifth full-scale water test, even with the acacia splice joint passing its initial flexural strength estimate, even with Hapy’s waste-stone grading system relieving the external stone supply pressure — Akhetaten still faced a more fundamental problem than any single material shortage. The Theban temple system was not simply cutting off three materials. Its goal was to make Akhetaten find itself isolated at every level where substitution was possible. The water route, the land route, the merchants’ guilds, the river checkpoints, the timber permits, the kiln fuel quotas — all these power lines, dispersed across different departments, different levels, different geographic nodes, were being twisted by the same central will into a single directional net. The net did not close all at once. It simply made every shipment arriving at the new capital smaller than the last. Not a sudden death — a slow bleed from within.

On the second day after his talk with Henu, Meru took all his records from the store-shelter to the survey shelter. His five-year informal river-landing intelligence book was copied and filed at the survey shelter. The day Lu Zhu saw the material, he had small identification tags woven from palm fiber — each tag smaller than half a palm, small enough to tuck into a belt fold without showing — to mark the hidden landings. Every tag was a counter-strike against a cut supply line.

On the afternoon Kamon received Kes’s fifth-round composite pipe, he had one of his oldest stonemasons test the hornblende vein behind the quarry — the one previously considered too brittle to work. The test showed: if they cut horizontally, from a small natural fissure on the vein’s side, the chisel could travel through a uniform-density stone layer from start to finish. Kamon marked two of the three horizontal test cuts with permanent reference markers for the stonemason’s working direction. From that day forward, all hornblende stone for composite pipe casings would be quarried horizontally. He said nothing while the old mason made the test cuts — just stood there, rubbing the hammer handle, then tapped it twice. The old mason understood.

The quarry’s small test area was also expanded that same day. Hapy marked out a new area, roughly three times the original size, on the south side of the old test zone with crushed-stone rope — divided into three fixed work stations, each with a charcoal start-line marked on the ground. By dusk, he had drawn the last charcoal mark at the kiln mouth, stood, and rubbed the stone dust from his fingertips three times in his palm. On this patch of wilderness stone ground, less than twenty feet square, a fully local composite drainage pipe production line had taken shape.

IX.

The Theban pressure intensified that same day. A low-level clerk from the Theban Royal Works Institute arrived unannounced — not with an official dispatch, but with an oral message: the Theban Amun Temple’s Building Materials Allocation Office had formally requested the Institute to add a new approval stamp — the ”Temple Construction Purpose Confirmation Seal” — to all building materials shipped to Akhetaten. Every shipment, before loading, would need an on-site inspector from the temple to confirm that the materials’ intended use did not ”conflict with any temple construction project or dedicated storage needs.” Only after approval could the shipping permit be issued. If this system took effect, it would give Thebes a pre-approval veto over every shipment to Akhetaten. The clerk added, after delivering the message: ”This regulation hasn’t been formally filed yet at the Institute — but the Allocation Office has already begun using it at the docks to stop shipments, one by one.”

After seeing the clerk out, Sobekh returned to his worktable and spread out the draft application he had already begun — the one requesting that Akhetaten’s composite drainage pipe be certified as the official alternative standard for the new capital, with provisional approval and inclusion in the national materials registry. Now he had to add a new section — the technical data from the fifth-round full-scale pipe tests, water seal and compression, and the basic argument that the local composite material freed the new capital’s supply chain from temple control. He pressed his short ruler against the papyrus and wrote, line by line, heavy and slow.

X.

On the night he finished the first draft, Lu Zhu walked alone to the gravel clearing outside the survey shelter. He carried a small oil lamp with an old sheepskin shade, yellowed and translucent from years of heat. He set the lamp on a protruding hornblende stone and crouched, tracing a new check with his finger against the gravel gradation reference sheet Hapy had given him: the foundation fill beneath the northern granary area had been compacted with a gravel layer whose particle size and thickness had been temporarily reduced during the early construction phase. In the dry season, it would not matter. But if the rainy season’s infiltration exceeded the previous year’s, the foundation sand could settle unevenly.

He sketched a rough repair plan for the foundation layer, then extinguished the lamp and walked back. The fourth line of thought that had come to him while crouching on the gravel clearing was not about materials or foundation settlement — it was about Thebes’s siege itself. An opponent who did not care about time had already built an invisible wall in the mind. He stood for a moment, looked up at the sky — tonight, a faint orange-gray glow was rising from the eastern dune line, the first sign of the half-moon climbing behind the sand. He lifted the lamp, pressed his thumb against the angle-mark on its handle, and walked back toward his shelter through the gravel path.

Back in his shelter, he did not light the lamp. In the dark, he sat on the low sleeping platform and, one by one, laid the four small stones from the clay bowl on the reed mat — the river cobble, the waterproof mortar fragment, the dark-wood slice, the composite-pipe inner shard — each stone placed side by side, leaving a narrow gap, slightly less than a finger-width, between them. Four stones. All of them still there. And as long as they were, they would continue.

Outside, the wind died down near dawn. The quarry’s bonfires had not gone out — Hapy’s night crew had changed shifts twice. On the other side of the encampment, Kes sat at his workbench, holding the first crooked composite pipe section he had ever made. He set it in the lamp shadow, measured the pouring angle of the plain end against the mold origin notched into the scrap-wood board, and pulled out a small new carving board from under his workbench — a positioning template for the sixth-round mold optimization. He set the new board beside the crooked pipe, the same spacing he always used for his experiments. From tomorrow onward, anyone who needed to replicate the pipe end at this angle would simply fit it into the board — the angle would lock itself into place. Every lesson from the crooked pipe was already locked into the new mold.

In the deepest dark before dawn, the encampment’s sounds did not fully die away — a night heron’s low flight over the river, the loose canvas at the survey shelter’s northwest corner slapping the wall with each gust. But to the ears listening tonight, it was not a restless noise — it was the same rhythm as the gravel path underfoot, the sound of a road still being laid. Then, before long, dawn came. The northern ridge line emerged in the first light, and closer in, the test kiln’s chimney began to plume its first smoke of the day — the fifth-round formula, in the morning light, was already being replicated into the sixth.

(End of Chapter 10)
