Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 24: Chapter 14: The Royal Summons — Setting Out for the New Capital

Some departures begin with a packed cart and a road stretching east. Others begin the moment a man looks around a room full of people he has built a life beside and realizes he cannot take all of them with him — and that the ones who stay will have to hold every wall upright without him.

The royal courier’s dust has not yet settled on the Nile crossing road when, on the second night, Lu Zhu summons every core member to the back courtyard of the granary for the longest meeting the Hexi settlement has ever held. The night air carries the river’s coolness, still sharp with the memory of the day’s heat. No one mentions leaving halfway through. No one asks when they can go home to sleep. Everyone in this room understands that the decisions made tonight will determine who stays and who goes — and that going or staying, every person here will be betting the second half of their life on what is decided in the next few hours. And everyone also understands one more thing: none of them can afford to fail. Without Lu Zhu, there is no Kamon. Without Meru, the records cannot be handed over to find a new keeper.

The first to state their position is shorter than anyone expected. Imset.

Imset sits beside the medical hall’s still-drying foundation wall, and what he says is exactly what he told Lu Zhu before: ”I am not going to the new capital. Not now.” He sets the palm-leaf bundle of dried herbs he has been holding on the ground, and his fingers work at the knot, tightening it — tighter than he has ever tied it before. ”The medical hall was built on this foundation — the walls have only just risen past the first course of brick. The foundation’s waterproofing still needs ten days of testing. Once the rains come, someone will inevitably flood the place. The herb storehouse — I have to finish it. Only once the apprentice can manage every herb by category, and clearly distinguish storage-rotation protocols, will I go. Shafi will go to the new capital first — cold storage for the pharmacy, disease-prevention standards, the new capital’s medical hall can be operational right from the start. Treat the new city as a pilot — once it is fully launched, and I have straightened out the Hexi medical hall’s systems, I will come join you.” As he says this, his eyes brush past Lu Zhu’s face and land on Shafi. Shafi’s hands are still carefully wrapping a sheet of palm-fiber membrane around a freshly made salve, her fingertips sticky with the residue of crushed herbs. She does not look up. The tips of her ears are red.

Tia also speaks. Her statement is even simpler than Imset’s. ”The settlement cannot lose another pair of hands right now. The grain-supply rotation — every ten days, someone needs to check the stock. The medical hall’s inspection schedule — every month, someone needs to walk each room. The central market — thirty-plus stalls, and the rent ledger has to be updated every month. The Widow’s Ferry — seven orphaned elderly, someone has to remember to send them grain. I am not a stonemason, but I can keep records. All these things — if I don’t do them, no one else will think of them.” As she speaks, she is wiping clean a lump of unused limestone with her other hand, her sleeve smearing through the dust. ”And besides — I am a woman. The new capital is not like the Hexi settlement. Men who chase power don’t move aside for a woman who keeps ledgers. If I stay here, the Stonemasons’ Guild on the Hexi side can keep turning, and I can look after those old walls, those door frames, those kilns. And that road — the seven-span road, the one I measured with my own feet before anyone else arrived to measure it — someone has to keep counting it.”

Kamon nods. He entrusts Asaf and Hapy with the settlement’s continuing operations and wages. He entrusts Hapy with the Guild’s labor-hour ledger — the complete registry. He does not say thank you. He simply pulls the palm-fiber paper labor-hour ledger from his tool bag and lays it in front of Asaf. ”Monthly reconciliation of work hours. The page must not tear. The hide must not rot. When a new name appears — you record it. When a figure looks wrong — you ask. If the Guild’s regulations are the body, this ledger is the pulse. You lose the pulse — the body does not know it is dead until it collapses.” Asaf does not immediately take the book. He opens to any page, runs his finger along a line of hide whose charcoal script has been smudged by humidity, and says — to himself as much as to anyone listening — ”The charcoal on this page has faded too much. It needs recopying.” Then he closes the ledger. ”Understood.”

Tia stands beside Asaf, a thin roll of papyrus ledger sheets tucked under her arm, the charcoal notations on its surface listing everything that still needs attention: the perimeter wall reinforcement schedule and materials checklist, the monthly sand-change rotation for each water-filtration basin, the phase-by-phase construction progress plan for the medical hall project, the central market stall rent ledger’s reconciliation deadline and audit process, and the Widow’s Ferry cross-river boat’s weekly inspection schedule. Beside every item is written the name of an executor and a supervisor. The executors are all people staying behind; the supervisors are all — every single one — Tia and Imset. The sheet in her hand is the first time this settlement has ever produced a document that systematically records every operational loss and maintenance item, then confirms that after the core leadership leaves, the remaining people can continue to carry the load. In the space of a single night, Tia has written down the management continuity plan for an entire settlement. Beside every item is an executor, a supervisor, and a handover date — each written on the same line. The three names sit together on the same sheet of paper, their jurisdictions clear and their handover authority unambiguous. Tia stands beside her, and as Asaf finishes checking every name, Tia taps each entry on the sheet with her fingertip. She spent fifteen years as a scribe copying tax rolls and population registers — with her handwriting and her number sense, she is the most natural person in this room to serve as a final-check cross-reference. And now, this is exactly the work she is doing: checking names, from the bottom up, for a family she is about to be separated from. ”Capital reserves — drawn first, disbursed on schedule, no outstanding debt to anyone. The leather ledger — checked monthly, every quarter a copy sent to me.” On the leather binding, she has already written a line in her own hand: ”Guild Operations — Interim Executor.” This is the first day she has taken a formal administrative title since leaving her master — the first day, after being apprenticed, of bearing responsibility for another.

Shafi holds the limestone slab with the herb-storage zone map drawn on it — two copies. One for the Hexi medical hall — to stay. One for the new capital — to go. A third copy, packed in a palm-leaf bundle, serves as the archive master. What she brings with her are the medicinal supplies she can carry. When packing the bundles, she says to Hapy: ”These bundles must not be too heavy — crushed leaves will go bad if they are pressed too tightly.” Hapy does not answer — he is calculating the weights of the bundles in his head, arranging stone powder and salves and dried herbs between them, and the jostling of the mule cart as it moves shifts the weight between the bundles, their edges rubbing against one another. Shafi watches from the side, and after a long, quiet look, she points at the topmost medicine bundle and says: ”Move this one to the left side. The left side gets more sun, so the temperature comes down faster.” She has never studied formal medicine — no one has taught her how to measure the temperature of a medicine bundle. She just places her palm against the bundle’s outer wrapping for a moment and knows — the way a person raised in the fields knows, by the heat of the earth, which seed will sprout. Hapy shifts the bundle to the left side and marks a note on his palm paper: ”Herb bundles should face the sun — tend toward lower temperature.”

Meru is not in the Hexi settlement.

He has been traveling for two days. On the day the envoy departed, he signed the first supply contract, and the warehouse inventory system was still in the middle of installing its bottom-track sliding grooves. Lu Zhu had said to him: ”The new capital has no supply chain at all — the first thing we need to know is the price, availability, and supply radius of every nearest building-material source, set down on paper. Nothing else — just that.” Meru was silent for a moment after hearing this, then he packed his bag and left the same night. He transferred all of the Hexi settlement’s day-to-day procurement to Asaf and Tia — the three grain suppliers who had signed contracts with him, the two private quarries upstream whose stone he had verified, the kiln manager whose brick-firing cycles he had personally calibrated — the full pipeline of supply channels, all handed over. ”The old contracts remain in force,” Meru said. And then he gave the first-quarter payment schedule and quality-inspection samples to both of them. ”While I am away, the merchants’ accounts stay open for review. If there is a shortfall, come to me. If inventory runs tight — you tell them. I only honor contracts.” These words, and the contents of the pouch he handed over, were worth at least the entire capital table of a mid-sized trading house.

Asaf and the messengers are spreading out. Hapy and the errand boys — the farmer boys who watched the stoneworkers dig cellars and learned surveying by sight, the orphaned nephews of quarrymen who have been with the Guild since its first day, the latest additions to Meru’s trading-house apprentices — these boys will hold the line. Hapy takes the contracts and recalculates every supplier’s delivery radius, while the smallest of the orphans is sent to manage the central market stall — where he will learn by watching the ledgers.

Departure day arrives more quietly than anyone expected. The morning mist over the Nile has not yet burned off, and the air still holds the green scent of last night’s watered palm groves. The limestone-paved road at the settlement entrance is already lined with people on both sides.

Some laborers have brought the tools from their own crafts — a sun-dried brick carrier’s pole loaded with water jars and dried rations, a brickmaker’s wife standing by the roadside, gripping the workers’ hands and murmuring: ”When you reach the new capital, tell them we’re still here.” She grabs the arm of the mason beside her and holds on — she is a worker’s wife, and she knows that these hands build meals and houses. ”My man won’t be going. But these crafts —” She has packed water and food and coconut-date cakes, and her hands are full of contradictions and hope — hope for the men who are leaving, and hope for the ones she is keeping beside her. The settlement’s night-watch lamps still need lighting, and the road that was walked in darkness is still traveled by people carrying their own light.

At the foot of the settlement walls, the old farmer who once pressed a date pit onto Lu Zhu’s palm — the man who received the decree scroll, and Kamon who recorded the guild regulations beside it, and Asaf who transcribed the labor-hour ledgers — all three of them sit cross-legged against the wall. Meru leans against a stack of hurriedly loaded grain sacks, a leather map tube resting on his knee. Behind him — a two-wheeled handcart, thick-axled, with thirty-odd bundles of tools and bags of belongings packed tight, women holding children and the elderly standing pressed around it. They stand on the crushed-stone road, their shadows overlapping in the low morning light. No one is pushing forward. Tia kneels beside the cart, checking that every ledger’s table of contents and index match the bundle labels one by one, her gaze sweeping the contents of each scroll and bag — she is working from the list Lu Zhu wrote down before he left: the new capital survey priority checklist. In the lower right corner of that list, a forgery-proof symbol is drawn — one that only Tia and Lu Zhu can read. It is the same technique she used in Thebes to verify the authenticity of documents, a hidden verification mark traced in the air before being pressed into the sheet with the edge of her writing-reed. After checking, she passes the reed to Asaf. Asaf looks at the checklist — those items marked ”pending” have not yet been crossed off a single line. Every item Lu Zhu has listed is something Asaf can immediately place on the supply map — every quarry, every kiln, every transport route.

”When we reach the new capital — what if no one will sell us materials?” A farmer from the grain-jar village calls out the question from the crowd. His voice is loud, but he is holding the grain jar he adapted himself from Lu Zhu’s blueprints — the jar with the limestone at the bottom, the one that has kept his grain dry for a full year without a single moldy kernel.

Lu Zhu stops walking. He turns and looks at the circle of common people around him. He knows every face. The old farmer with gray-streaked hair — the dates in his hand were harvested from the trees beside the Widow’s Ferry. The sun-darkened woman who once brought him food — her question was ”Can this stone cure heatstroke?” The old farmer whose donkey went lame on the road while hauling stone for the Guild — now standing with his donkey, its hoof wrapped in a clean cloth. Every one of these people has held a stone, a drawing, and walked alongside the ones who built the walls — brick by brick and mud-spattered hand by hand, with every single stone accounted for.

”I have already delegated every task for the Hexi side,” he says. ”The people staying behind will not be standing on empty ground. The perimeter wall inspection schedule and materials list — checked. The water basins’ monthly sand-change rotation — confirmed. The Guild labor-hour ledger — will not be transferred, and its audit standards will not change. If anyone suppresses wages — Hapy goes to negotiate. If anyone damages a wall — the Guild dispatchers will step in.”

After his last sentence, the crowd goes still for a moment. Then the old farmer whose hair is streaked with gray walks out of the crowd — the same man who once pressed a palmful of dried coconut dates into Lu Zhu’s hands on this very road. ”Eat on the road. It’s not heavy. It won’t spoil.” He does not say ”come back soon.” He simply places the bundle in Lu Zhu’s arms, then presses Lu Zhu’s fingers closed around the wrapping — the same way he once steadied the Widow’s Ferry boatman’s oar. He holds for a moment, then turns and walks back into the crowd. His steps are not fast, but each one is steady.

Lu Zhu looks down at the bundle in his hands. It is still warm — the warmth of dates that have been held inside someone’s tunic all morning, carried against a heartbeat. The warmth seeps through the coarse cloth and into his palms, and he wants to say ”thank you,” but his throat tightens around the word and will not let it out. He is not used to this — to saying goodbye to people he does not have a contract with. In the past, when he left a completed project for the next one, there were drawings to sign over and a final inspection checklist to initial, and then handshakes and walking away. But there is no drawing here, no contract. There is only a grain jar with limestone at the bottom that has kept grain dry for a full year — something he sketched in passing on the settlement wall while drawing foundation plans, an idle thought he never meant anything by. And now, days later, a farmer who cannot read blueprints has carried that jar all the way here, because the limestone Lu Zhu added on a whim saved his entire coconut harvest, and the coconut dates that harvest produced are sitting in Lu Zhu’s hands — and he cannot say this was just part of the job. It was never about the blueprints. It was about the way the blueprints, once drawn, walked off the page and into people’s lives.

Kamon stands in the doorway of the granary’s back-courtyard cookhouse, watching the team pack the carts outside. He does not go out to check everything one by one — the entire settlement is already listed in his head. He only stands in the cookhouse doorway for a moment, then turns and walks back inside, resuming the work of grinding the next batch of grain into flour. He grinds until the pestle is a blur, until his knuckles ache — grinding grain, rice, dried meat, grinding everything he can grind, then pressing the mixture into the stew pot. Tomorrow morning, the porridge that simmers on this cookstove will be ladled out by Shafi according to the ingredient-distribution chart, and the last meal before departure will be served. The wet ingredients wait in a clay jar with a double-reed seal on one side, and on the other, the dried ingredients have all been tipped out onto the stone slab beside the cookstove. The stone slab was laid by Kamon himself just before he left — one more task, finished so it would not be left undone. On the cookstove, the clay jar is still steaming — every jar, every bowl, every stone weight pressing down the layer of sand beneath the coals was set out by Lu Zhu, Kamon, and Shafi together, each one of them laying down what they were best at. Everything their hands have touched — the walls Imset leaned against while he wrapped herbs, the shelf where Meru spread out his warehouse-distribution map, the cookstove where Shafi wiped clean the wooden lid with the edge of her sleeve — every surface has been wiped down, and even the wooden lid’s edge has been washed by Kamon until the grain stands clean. A small, black scorch mark clings stubbornly to the rim of the stove; Kamon rubs at it for a long time with a cloth, and the scorch mark trembles but does not lift.

Kamon walks over from the quarry workshop and stops at the cookhouse door for a moment, taking in the cookstove that the three of them worked on together. Then, instead of saying goodbye, he asks a direct question: ”The north side of the settlement has all been walked. In addition to the question about the medical hall — the corner position of the perimeter wall, has the settlement side confirmed it on their own? Once the first rain hits, what’s the plan? The cracks in the inner wall of the cookhouse stove — I repaired them before. From now on, there will be no one here to check the walls for cracks.” Kamon’s response is even and level: ”The cookhouse stove has cracks. I filled them in before. Now there will be no more cracks.” Every sentence they exchange is charcoal scratched onto stone — the north-side route, the perimeter-wall corner position, the stove cracks, the wall inspection, and the new reinforcing post. There is not a single word of sentiment — but every word, stacked together, is the work of months between two men who have learned exactly what the other will check.

Imset stands beside the far wall of the medical hall, near the foundation, holding the copy of the herb-storage zone map that Shafi drew on the limestone slab. He wears a plain white linen robe, unstained, its hem stirring faintly in the river breeze slipping through the palm grove. His eyes rest on the road along the Nile — the one they are about to travel. Lu Zhu stands in front of him. Kamon stands in front of the Guild hall. Meru tucks the account book into his tunic. Asaf cradles the stack of perimeter-wall drawings, their edges already worn soft. Hapy crouches beside the cart, checking the latest charcoal figures on the inventory manifest. The mule-cart driver checks the load one more time — the stone chest, the medicine bundles, the herb jars, and the handcart, a two-wheeled cart with a wide bed, loaded with surveying poles in leather sheaths and clay jars wrapped in woven-reed jackets. The driver’s hand rests on the cart shaft, and he and the mule-cart driver exchange a low remark, and then both of them laugh — the cart tips, and in the moment when the driver thrusts his shoulder under the shaft to steady it, the two men begin to push off, the cart groaning as its weight shifts. These are young men, some still in their teens, some barely past thirty, but the talk between them is already full of carrying capacity and load limits and the specifics of the job.

Imset draws in a slow breath before the sutra-copied scripture wall, and when Lu Zhu’s back is to him, he speaks — low, barely loud enough for himself to hear: ”The herb-storehouse moisture-barrier standard — one rule. In three months, when the seedlings come up, the medical hall’s water channels and the water source will be at the new capital on the same schedule.” He does not chase after them. He simply lays the herb-storage map flat against the first course of rammed earth on the medical hall’s foundation wall. The palm paper soaks up moisture from the earth, its edges darkening, and the characters blur slightly — Shafi’s handwriting, traced onto this sheet the day she was first assigned the task, and now her master’s eyes rest on it for a moment. Imset lifts his head slightly and closes his eyes. He has already confirmed: his apprentice is ready to carry this alone.

Old Nakht stands in the crowd at the riverbank as well — holding his youngest grandson in his arms, the child clutching a chunk of polished diorite that fits neatly in his small fist. ”This stone is good. Later, when you join the masters out there, take it with you. There are plenty more good stones like it on the riverbank at the new capital.” The child cradles the heavy diorite and looks up: ”Grandfather — when are the masters coming back?” The old man does not answer. He only presses the child’s head gently down, once, and the small chin dips against the stone. Over twenty years ago, Old Nakht was a man who never bent his head to anyone on this riverbank — but now, as he watches the departing line grow smaller and smaller, he lifts a hand and presses it against the back of his grandson’s small head, tracing through the boy’s fine hair with a thumb crisscrossed by old quarry scars. The thumb follows the line of the river, the same water-smooth path he has traced on the riverbank stones for twenty years — the path of a man who learned the weight of every rock in this riverbed by splitting his skin against them, and who now wants the next generation to learn a lighter way.

Pepi stands in the middle of the departure crowd, gripping a stone chisel — his own. The very chisel his apprentice Kenti was holding when he stood beside him at the ceremony. Pepi is not going to the new capital — his legs cannot carry him that far. He has spent a full day and a night grinding away every trace of the old bevel on that chisel. When he hands it to Hapy, he says only one thing: ”Take this chisel and give it to Kenti. Tell him — the old grind angle is wiped clean. There is no one’s name left on it. From now on, he has to carve his own name — into the Guild’s wall. This life’s debt — I am calling it paid.” Hapy takes the chisel and turns to look at Pepi’s retreating back — the old man is still rubbing at his calluses, still pressing his thumb into the familiar grooves. Pepi knows his master has taken on a debt heavier than any man should carry.

Hapy takes the chisel. His fingertip traces the fresh grinding marks along the bevel — each one cut to the true hardness of the stone, the striations clean and directional. The grind angle is wrong — it always was, from the start. Pepi took the chisel and a piece of coarse stone from the quarry workshop, and he ground off the angle himself, putting the edge back where it belonged. He ground for a full day and a night. He ground not a tool but a name — his own, the one he should have had — and now that name, tool in hand, will walk into the new capital under its own power. Squinting against the morning light, he passes the chisel to his apprentice: ”Look at this bevel — the angle. It matches the Guild’s craft demonstration platform — exactly. Remember the standard. Now take it to the new capital.”

The two chisels rest side by side in the tool bag. No one says it out loud, but everyone knows — Pepi is sending his own hands ahead of him.

All the farmers from the villages along the Nile road have come out — they have had no time to prepare gifts, but what they do bring is water, soaked and cooled in their own cellars. Some even come chasing after the carts, and those who cannot catch up stand at their field edges and wave. There are several families whose grain jars were adapted from the blueprints Lu Zhu drew — one farmer, who was sun-drying mud bricks on the raised field ridge, stands watching the cart train pass for a long time. Then he runs back to his own field and pulls up a whole armload of coconut dates, chasing after them, and he chases a full thirty paces before catching the last cart. ”Take them — take them for the road. Don’t go hungry out there doing that work.” He shoves the bundle into the arms of an apprentice he does not even recognize, then stands by the roadside in his coarse linen skirt and wipes his hands — not a single dry patch on the cloth. The apprentice hugs the bundle of coconut dates and the dates’ thin frost coating keeps them cool — the same stone-lined cellar the farmer used to cure his grain jars. He watches the farmer’s back grow distant, and he mouths the word ”thanks,” but the farmer does not look back — only lifts a hand and waves, once.

Their destination is a city that does not yet have a single brick. The New Royal Capital — Akhetaten — lies to the east. What awaits them on the far bank of the Nile is nothing but a stretch of virgin plain, with a few abandoned channels marking the old river’s course and the high-desert plateau rising beyond. No city walls. No streets. No official granary. No barracks. Not a single water channel. Not a single well. And not a single clinic.

Lu Zhu stands at the front of the departing column, and in his tunic he carries a royal decree — the full construction authority for the new capital, stamped with the pharaoh’s solar-disk seal. Behind him stretch the cart train and its loads of surveying equipment. Somewhere ahead, a city waits to be drawn into existence — a city that will stand on the same latitude as the holy city of Thebes, a city whose first survey line he has already sketched in his mind. The desert wind lifts the edge of the decree’s papyrus, and as Lu Zhu’s finger drifts across the seal, tracing the sun-disk’s raised impression, he lets the document fall open — letting the first survey bearing reveal itself.

His finger lifts from the papyrus, the tips of his fingers brushing the seal’s edge, and then his arm extends — pointing east, pointing into the open desert where not a single stone has yet been laid. Behind him, in the cart beds, the drawings rustle — perimeter walls, granaries, medical-hall foundations, a supply road cutting straight across the plain — and all of those drawings will soon be unrolled onto the virgin earth of the new capital, not yet traced onto a single stone, but already gripped tight in every palm that follows this road east.

The river gleams. The column begins to move.

Chisels and medicine bundles and blueprints and tools roll onto the long road east along the Nile. The cart wheels grind over crushed stone and dried palm fronds, and the dust they raise drifts across the river’s surface. A boat carrying a late-arriving load of surveying poles rocks in the ferry’s wake, and from the far bank comes the hazy outline of the eastern ridge, its barren slopes catching the morning light. A string of handcarts stretches out along the road, their shadows thin and long in the early sun, the loads of stone and timber and medicine bundles weaving back and forth across the column. Every person in this line is carrying something — a chisel, a medicine jar, a surveying pole, a bundle of dried herbs — and the weight of these things rides not just in the carts but in the hands and shoulders and the small of every back.

Long after the column has passed out of sight along the river road, the Hexi settlement’s farthest cookhouse roof — the one at the abandoned-shrine site — shudders once, and then caves in. The reed thatch collapses soundlessly into the shadow of the palm grove, swallowed by the earth. Tia stands in the doorway of the granary’s back-courtyard cookhouse, watching the last wisp of that distant dust settle into the air. She does not turn back inside. She does not linger at the crossroads. She simply looks toward the granary for a long moment — at the stack of wooden boxes and the grain sacks — and then she lifts the lid of the clay jar, checks the water line around its rim, and sets it back down. The perimeter wall’s night-watch rotation — the shift has already been taken over by another team. The cookstove’s fire is still burning. The charcoal drawings that Imset spread out beside the medical-hall foundation wall — Shafi’s herb-storage zone map — he studies alone, by the light of a single lamp, annotating the first proposed route for a cold-chain medicine transport system from the new capital. Below the drawing, Shafi has added a note: ”This map may still have errors — send corrections.” And below that line, Imset has written one more: ”Received and confirmed.”

At the back of the column, Hapy and the apprentices and the errand boys walk together, each carrying a palm-paper notebook — Lu Zhu has taught them to record the river-water level, the floodplain height, and the bank-soil composition of every new place they pass. The data will be used to directly inform foundation designs and water-system planning, saving countless survey hours when construction begins. The apprentices trade notebooks as they walk, comparing each other’s figures — one of them disputes a moisture reading, and they squat on the spot, digging into the soil with their fingers to check: one boy has already written a full page of foundation-load projections, his handwriting still carrying the sunburn scrawl of a field worker, while another has noted the effect of a medicine cart’s jostling on the herbs. These young men are not yet old enough to have earned formal titles in any history of architecture — but their hands already move with the precision of surveyors working along a great river. They stop mid-stride, pointing toward the far bend of the Nile, at a leaning marker stone half-buried in the bank: ”That section of riverbank — the slope. We need to write down the orientation of the slope face. The water hits it from this direction — next flood season, the bank will shift, and the terrace behind it will scour at least one man’s height higher.” Hapy writes down every word and passes it to the mule-cart driver, who tucks the note into the same page of palm paper where he is already registering the old river-channel contours of the eastern riverbank — recordings for a survey method he has not yet learned to draw as contour lines, but for which he has already grasped the principle: the direction of slope, that is the direction the water will flow.

The farmers living along the Nile road watch the departing train from their doorways — some set down their tools and stand still, others hurry out and run a few steps after the carts. Several families have adapted their grain jars from Lu Zhu’s blueprints. One farmer, drying mud bricks on a raised field ridge, stands watching the cart train pass for a long time. Then he runs back to his own field and pulls up an armload of coconut dates, chasing after the last cart for thirty paces before catching it. ”Take them — take them. The road is long — don’t go hungry.” He shoves the bundle into an apprentice’s arms, then wipes his hands on his wrap-skirt — not a single dry patch left on the cloth. The apprentice hugs the coconut dates, their surface still carrying the thin chill of the stone cellar where they were stored, and calls back ”thank you,” but the farmer has already turned and is walking away, only lifting one hand in a brief, unseeing wave.

Their destination is a city that does not yet have a single brick. The New Royal Capital, Akhetaten — summoned into being by decree — lies to the east. On the far side of the Nile there is nothing but virgin plain, with a few abandoned flood-season channels cutting through the earth and the high-desert plateau rising beyond. No city walls. No streets. No official granary. No barracks. Not a single water channel. Not a single well. And not a single clinic.

Lu Zhu stands at the head of the column, and in his tunic he carries a decree — in its entirety, the authority to plan and build the new capital, stamped with the pharaoh’s solar-disk seal. Behind him stretch the cart train and its loads of surveying equipment — a city that exists only in his mind, waiting to be drawn into the real world, a city that will stand on the same latitude as holy Thebes, whose first survey line he has already traced in his head. The desert wind catches the edge of the decree papyrus, and Lu Zhu’s finger drifts to the seal, tracing the solar disk’s raised impression — and in that touch is the memory of every wall his hands have ever raised, every foundation he has ever leveled, and every person whose trust now rides on the cart wheels behind him.

He releases his finger from the papyrus. His hand lifts — pointing east, toward the open desert where no stone has yet been set. Behind him, in the cart beds, the drawings stir: perimeter walls, granaries, medical-hall foundations, a supply road cutting straight across the plain. All of them will soon be unrolled onto the virgin earth of the new capital — not yet traced onto a single stone, but already gripped tight in every palm that follows this road east.

The river gleams. The column begins to move.
