Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 15: Chapter 5: Supplies Cut Off --- Meru Uncovers the Supply Freeze

On the third morning after the reform decree reached the West Bank, dawn had barely broken. The Nile’s morning mist still clung to the river’s surface, cold and damp, drifting across the west bank. Outside a timber workshop, two apprentices were play-fighting over a fresh load of tamarisk logs, shoving each other and scattering wood chips across the ground. The workshop owner stood in the doorway, wooden measuring stick in hand, laughing and scolding: ”Keep that up and I’m cutting both your flatbread rations in half!” At the corner of the lane, a barley-porridge vendor had set up his cart, the steam and aroma drifting through the street and mixing with the damp scent of fresh-cut timber. The morning’s everyday warmth cut through the tension that the decree had left behind. Meru clutched the remains of a half-eaten barley flatbread and stepped out of the small warehouse he’d borrowed on the edge of town. His feet found their familiar path along the gravel road still wet with night dew, heading toward Timber Street where the building-supply merchants clustered.

He’d run this route for over a decade --- leaving before first light, following the Nile’s riverbank south, stopping first at three timber yards, then looping around to the quarry stockyard at the foot of the hill, cutting through the clay workshops’ drying yard at midday, then circling back along the village track to check on two rope workshops. The full circuit took the better part of a day. He knew it with his eyes closed: which yard stacked its timber how many rows deep, which quarry’s limestone had the fewest fissures, whose palm-fiber rope was cut with papyrus fiber and lacked tensile strength. His Nubian caravan crew had put down roots in the West Bank building-supply trade for nearly twenty years --- from the days when he’d started as a peddler carrying a single bundle of spices to trade for stone, to now supplying materials for half the civilian housing projects in the suburbs. What he had was built on these worn paths his feet knew by heart, and the living ledger etched in his brain.

In a normal year, with a month and a half before the rains, this street should have been bustling. Timber-yard apprentices would be hauling freshly cut tamarisk and acacia out to the street-front to air-dry before dawn. Quarry carts would be rattling toward the ferry crossing, their wheels slick with morning dew. Even the rope-makers would have their palm-fiber coils hung on the wooden racks outside their shops, catching the breeze to shed moisture. The yard owners, spotting him from a distance, would call out greetings, then pull him aside to complain about how much the logging tax had risen this year, how the river boatmen had jacked up their freight rates --- grumbling on and on before finally sitting down to talk price.

But today was different.

When he reached the mouth of Timber Street, the silence hit him first. The timber stacks that should have been laid out by the street-front were all pulled back inside the courtyards. Doors stood half-shut. Not even a shop-boy watching the entrance. He walked a hundred-odd paces, passed three timber yards. Two were padlocked. The only one with its door open --- the owner was crouched on the threshold, tidying scrap wood. He looked up and saw Meru coming from the end of the street, and his hands moved visibly faster, like he’d been waiting for this.

By the time Meru reached the door, he noticed a half-finished white-robed footprint still wet on the threshold. Someone had left not long ago. The owner straightened, brushed the wood dust from his hands, and spoke in a pre-rehearsed, level tone: ”This month’s stock is already spoken for. Lord Meru, come back next month.”

Meru stood outside the threshold. The scent of fresh-cut timber drifted from the courtyard. He’d already run the numbers in his head --- this yard had just brought in two batches of acacia from the south last month, at least thirty cubic measures. At their usual turnover rate, they’d have moved at most a third of that in half a month. There was absolutely no way it was ”all spoken for.” He’d been in this trade long enough to know what a genuine supply crunch sounded like. That was a yard owner frowning and pouring out his troubles --- some nobleman’s villa project had snatched up half the stock, the transport crew was stuck at the ferry, and then he’d raise the price twenty percent on the spot. Not this. Not every refusal compressed into the same dry, memorized line, without even the usual complaints.

He didn’t call him out. He just nodded, turned, and walked toward the next yard. The gravel crunched under his sandals. One yard short on stock was coincidence. Three yards all short --- that was no coincidence.

By the time he reached the stone stockyard at the foot of the hill, the sun had climbed high enough to sting the back of his neck. The quarry foreman was crouched on a stone slab at the yard entrance, working a clay pipe. The tobacco smoldered slow, embers flaring and dying in the morning light. When he saw Meru approach, he didn’t even lift his eyes. Just kept crouching there smoking, like he hadn’t seen anyone.

Meru walked past him and swept his eyes across the yard. Neatly stacked limestone blocks covered half the slope --- all rough-squared to standard dimensions, at least a hundred cubic measures’ worth. He didn’t mention buying. He crouched down first, ran his hand over the cut face of a block beside his foot. Clean cut. Old mason’s handiwork. ”New face opened last month?” he asked, casual.

The foreman grunted. Tapped his pipe against the stone slab and threw out a sentence harder than quarried rock: ”Quarry hasn’t been shipping. No idea when they will. Don’t bother waiting.”

Meru lifted his eyes to look at him. He’d been dealing with this foreman for nearly a decade. The man used to haggle with him for half an hour over five copper deben. Now he wouldn’t even talk price --- just shut the door in his face. The suspicion that had been building in his chest finally settled into certainty. It wasn’t that there was no stock. It was that no one dared sell.

He didn’t press. Said thanks and rose to leave. Behind him, the pipe tapped once more. He didn’t turn around, but he knew the foreman was watching his back. The look in his eyes might not be malice. Mostly, it was fear.

Doubling back along the road to the clay workshops, Meru passed the clay drying yard by the river shallows. Two women collecting clay were resting by the water, drinking, murmuring to each other in low voices: clay prices had jumped thirty percent in the past two days; someone from Thebes had bought up all the good kaolin clay, leaving only low-grade stuff that was still more expensive than last year’s top grade. The yard’s owner was a widowed old woman who worked waterproof clay with her two daughters-in-law, supplying wall plaster for civilian houses. Small operation, but a solid reputation. This time of morning, the three women should have been crouched on the drying ground turning clay blocks. Today, only the old woman sat alone under the reed shelter at the yard’s edge, twisting straw rope in her hands. Every clay block was covered under straw mats, not a single one spread out.

When she saw Meru coming, she scrambled to her feet, wiped her hands on her apron. Her face held a flicker of fluster. ”Lord Meru! What brings you here today?”

”Come to look at your clay. Stocking up before the rains.” Meru’s eyes swept the covered mats. ”How’s the quality this year?”

The old woman’s gaze dodged and wavered. She couldn’t get the words out. After a long moment, she said quietly: ”This year... we’re not making any more. My son got conscripted to repair the embankment. No labor left in the house. Can’t turn the clay.”

Meru said nothing. He’d seen both her sons turning clay on this yard just last month. There was no conscription. He looked at the old woman’s hands clutching her apron, trembling, and knew pressing further was useless --- it would only add to her fear. He just nodded. ”Alright. When your sons come home, we’ll talk again.”

He walked a long way from the drying yard before looking back. The old woman still stood at the edge of the reed shelter, watching his direction. Her silhouette was small, full of unease.

In the deepest alley of Timber Street, he found the unremarkable rope shop --- tucked between two timber workshops, its storefront so narrow only one person could pass through. Half a coil of old palm-fiber rope hung over the door as a sign. The owner was called Kenas --- an old comrade from his early days in the Nubian caravan. The two of them had driven camel trains together along the Sahara’s edge, had survived three days and nights on a single waterskin and half a sack of dried dates when a sandstorm buried their route. Later, Kenas’s leg was broken during a cargo raid. He couldn’t run long-haul anymore, so he left the caravan and opened this little workshop on the West Bank, making palm-fiber rope to feed his family. That was over a decade ago.

When Meru pushed aside the door curtain, Kenas was sitting behind the counter twisting rope. His fingers were rough, but his hands moved fast --- the palm fibers turning and tightening between them, coiling into something strong. Hearing the door, he looked up. His face brightened at the sight of Meru, then immediately darkened. He rose quickly, stepped to the door to scan the street, made sure no one had followed, then yanked Meru behind the counter. His voice was pressed low: ”What are you still doing out there? Trying to get yourself killed?”

Meru raised an eyebrow. He didn’t ask the direct question yet. He pointed at the rope coils on the rack first. ”Come to check your stock. Business moving well lately?”

”Well? Everything’s grinding to a halt.” Kenas spat on the floor. His face held anger, and fear. ”Stop running. Three days ago, Thebes sent two separate teams --- stewards under Nekhem’s priesthood, each with temple guards. One team handled timber and stone. The other handled clay and rope. They went door to door. Anyone who sells building materials to the reform camp --- the temple cuts off all future business. They can even revoke your quarry extraction permit. They also approached every pit owner and clay workshop, offering thirty percent above market to buy up all the good waterproof kaolin. What’s left on the open market is low-grade stuff—even if someone dared sell, it wouldn’t hold up for real waterproofing work.”

He paused, bent down, and pulled a fresh coil of palm-fiber rope from under the counter. Laid it on the table. The rope was tightly woven, old Nubian handiwork --- good tensile strength, wouldn’t fray even soaked in water. ”This coil is last month’s surplus. Take it. No charge. But you can’t tell anyone it came from me. I have a whole family to feed, three children still small. I can’t be seen.”

Meru picked up the rope. He tested its give --- two short, sharp pulls. The fibers were dense, the feel familiar. Back in that sandstorm, it was rope like this that Kenas had used to lash the two of them to the camel, so the wind wouldn’t tear them apart. He looked at his old friend’s grey-white hair at the temples, the slight limp when he walked, and something sat heavy in his chest, like wet clay.

He set the rope back on the counter. Pushed it toward Kenas.

”What, not enough?” Kenas got agitated. ”This is really all I have. I don’t dare keep more --- afraid someone’ll find it.”

”Not about enough.” Meru shook his head. His voice was steady. ”I can’t take your free stock. If I take it, I’m dragging you down with me.”

”Still talking like that at a time like this!” Kenas glared at him. ”If it weren’t for you in that sandstorm, I’d be buried in the sand by now. What’s one coil of rope?”

”One day, I’ll come back and place an order openly, at market price. When that day comes --- don’t tell me you’re out of stock.” Meru said. ”Don’t worry. I can’t take it right now. But I’ll be back.”

He turned and walked out of the shop. Behind him, Kenas stood gripping that coil of rope, staring at the door curtain still swaying where Meru had passed through. His throat moved, but no words came out. Three days and nights in a sandstorm. Half a sack of dried dates. Two young men who’d gambled their lives on the desert and somehow both walked out alive. Some bonds didn’t need words.

Later that afternoon, on his way back to the granary, Meru ran into Seb and Hapy. The two boys were carrying limestone survey tablets and measuring cords, their faces streaked with sweat, just back from surveying two potential sites along the riverbank. Seb spotted Meru and hurried over, spreading his tablet open: the site near the quarry had a thick natural gravel layer that would save most of the bedding material; the high ground near the ferry had good access to the river crossing but would need a half-cubit sand layer for moisture isolation. Hapy added that they’d already built a half-height clay moisture-barrier test wall in the granary’s back courtyard, using the double-layer palm-frond-and-dry-sand method, and had measured a twenty percent drop in humidity. Once Master Lu Zhu signed off on the test results, they could use the same method on the formal warehouse. The three of them walked back to the granary together, talking as they went.

Lu Zhu saw Meru that evening. Meru pulled him aside beside the gravel pile at the back of the granary --- the testing ground for the new sieving standards, where no idle ears lingered --- and laid out every detail of the day’s visits. He’d now spent three days covering every building-supply merchant along the West Bank’s Nile frontage, and the picture was clear: Nekhem’s faction in Thebes, deploying the last scraps of organizational leverage before the temple closures took full effect, had sent stewards with temple guards to knock on every merchant’s door and issue a verbal blacklist. Not an official decree. Pressure applied through personal relationships, through the long-term dependency of small merchants on temple contracts. Four major categories affected --- timber, quarried stone, palm-fiber rope, waterproof clay. Different degrees, same starting point: no one was willing to sell openly.

But the three days of visits had also revealed the flip side. Most of these merchants had no loyalty to the old priests. They’d been squeezed by the temple for years --- timber bought at thirty percent below market, stone payments delayed a full two tendays, palm-fiber rope simply confiscated as ”temple offerings.” The merchants’ relationship with the old priesthood contained zero loyalty. Only fear. And the problem they faced --- the fear of selling openly --- was, by its nature, reversible.

”And this ties directly into the corvée reform timeline,” Meru added. ”In a few days, Tiya and Asaf are coming down to audit the craftsmen’s work-hour records and push forward the housing repair projects. If building materials get blocked, the houses won’t get built—and no matter how good the corvée reform looks on paper, it won’t reach the ground. If the merchants can’t get the materials they need, the whole thing stalls.”

”A single merchant can’t stand against the temple’s squeeze.” Meru crouched and sketched, in charcoal on the gravel floor, a distribution map of every merchant along the Nile: timber zone, stone zone, clay zone, rope zone. ”But every small and mid-sized supplier on the West Bank, added together, moves as much volume as the temple ever purchased. Last month, when I was running the goods-coordination duty at the market, I mapped every merchant’s inventory and transport routes along the river. Every one of them has stock. Every one of them is too scared to be the first to stick their head up. They’re like a herd of single-horned cattle --- every one has a horn, but they only know how to fight alone.”

He drew a circle around the scattered merchants. Inside the circle, a square: centralized warehouse. From the square, four short lines radiating to the four material zones, each labeled with rough transport days and maximum cart turnaround speed. ”I want to try something. Bring these small and mid-sized merchants together. Unified pricing. Centralized warehousing. Shared transport costs. Take contracts and supply projects under a single ’merchant alliance’ name. No more individual merchants facing the temple’s purchasing pressure and delayed-payment risk alone. Bundle the scattered shops together --- so every one of them has the guts to say ’no’ before signing a contract.”

”How many merchants have you discussed this with?” Lu Zhu asked.

”None yet. Drew the map today.” Meru spun the charcoal between his fingers --- round and round --- staring at the crude diagram on the ground. ”But I’ve been thinking about one thing. If every merchant falls into the temple’s price-squeeze trap alone—every one signing losing contracts alone, every one swallowing unpaid debts alone—they’ll all get broken. But if an entire merchant alliance refuses to sign unreasonable terms at the same time—can the temple blacklist all of them? No. Because then there’d be no other channel to supply the entire West Bank’s construction demand.”

Lu Zhu looked at the rough circle and four radiating lines scratched into the gravel. This was no longer sheer mercantile calculation. This was the embryo of a supply-chain organization --- going cold, going grounded, going systematic.

Lu Zhu drew the centralized-warehouse plan that same night, beside the campfire at the back of the granary --- the same campfire where he and Imset had spent three nights drawing the refugee settlement master plan. Seb and Hapy crouched nearby, helping copy the ledgers from the limestone tablets onto papyrus.

The warehouse was divided into four material zones, each with a different moisture-protection tier. The timber zone required elevated decking with ventilation gaps beneath --- breathable but waterproof. The stone zone used a crushed-stone leveling bed --- same principle as the granary moisture barrier. The clay zone was the hardest: waterproof clay’s sensitivity to air humidity exceeded most people’s estimates; it required double-layer palm-frond curtain walls with a dry coarse-sand buffer layer sandwiched between them. The rope zone required cool, dry conditions, positioned far from the oil-volatile off-gassing from the timber zone.

Lu Zhu annotated every storage tier with numerical estimates: rough loss rates for each material category, including stone inventory carrying costs calculated against typical quarry turnaround days, and the monthly loss rate of untreated rope under rainy-season humidity. The numbers rested on the daily statistical logs that the market’s goods-coordination team had been compiling for over two months --- empirical data, not guesswork.

Seb’s intake ledger also took final form that night: a limestone tablet ruled in charcoal with clear columns—raw material type, source, tonnage, date received, storage zone, issuing party, and intended use. Every transaction required confirmation marks from both parties, full traceability from intake to dispatch. When Tiya and Asaf came to audit the corvée-related materials consumption, they could pull the ledger and verify everything directly, without piecemeal reconstruction from scattered scraps.

Meru crouched beside him, watching the moisture-tier designs and loss-rate annotations take shape layer by layer. He realized that all the improvised methods he’d used half a month ago while managing the market goods --- spreading gravel under stall mats against ground moisture, hanging coarse linen over the trading-hall entrance against windblown sand --- had been primitive versions of warehouse standardization. But he’d treated each as an isolated minor fix. He hadn’t seen that these things could be systematically codified into a repeatable operational rule-set. With Lu Zhu’s zone designs and numerical framework in front of him, and the ledger template already in place, he no longer had to feel his way across the river every time.

”With this chart and the ledger template,” Meru said, holding the palm-paper up to the firelight, ”I don’t have to sell them on an alliance or talk about opposing the temple. I just show them a single calculation: what percentage of your stock rotted in your own warehouse last year. When the numbers speak, people follow.”

Over the following days, Meru worked his way through the merchant contacts on Lu Zhu’s annotated zone map, visiting each workshop one by one. He used a completely different approach. He never led with the word ”alliance.” He just sat and drank tea with each merchant. Talked about operating costs. Talked about the specific ways the temple squeezed prices. Only at the end of each conversation did he place the palm-paper --- with its moisture-tier diagrams and loss-rate estimates --- on the table. And he said the same sentence to every merchant: ”You don’t have to say yes now. Go calculate what percentage of the building materials you sold last year rotted inside your own warehouse. That problem has nothing to do with the temple. Let’s not talk politics yet. Let’s talk about how the rope that got soaked in your storehouse cost you money.”

As he worked through the visits, Meru observed that different merchants reacted very differently. Two timber-workshop owners nearly came to blows over who would supply which territory. Meru ended up measuring transport radii with his leather measuring cord and charcoal stick --- back and forth for several rounds --- before he managed to cool the tempers on both sides.

”Supply territories split by transport radius. That’s the fairest way.” Meru pushed the calculated numbers in front of them. ”Closest supplier gets the route. The shipping costs you save --- that’s your own profit.”

The two workshop owners stared at the numbers for a long time. Neither could find fault. The earlier heat had mostly burned off. They both drank their tea in silence and stopped arguing.

The rope-makers gave him a more direct response than the merchants. Of the three rope workshops Meru visited, all were craftsmen who’d been squeezed by the temple for over a decade and were full of pent-up resentment. One old craftsman, after hearing the warehousing proposal, slammed his hand on the table: ”The temple’s been squeezing our rope prices for years. I’ve wanted out for a long time! Before, I didn’t dare fight back --- scared they’d shut down my business and my whole family would starve. If you can guarantee they won’t retaliate --- I’ll follow you.”

Meru didn’t pound his chest and make guarantees. He just said: ”I can’t guarantee the temple won’t make trouble. But I can guarantee that if trouble comes, you won’t face it alone. Every merchant in the warehouse faces it together. And we’re not doing temple business --- we’re doing new-capital business, civilian housing business. That road is no narrower than the temple’s.”

And the majority of merchants displayed the classic ”ask both ways” pattern --- polite and courteous refusal to Meru’s face, saying they’d ”think it over.” Then, after Meru left, they’d send a household apprentice or servant to slip over under cover of darkness, to quietly ask about the details: How much to join the warehouse pool? Is the inventory safe in the shared storehouse? Who sets the pricing? Could the authorities confiscate it?

Meru never called them out. Anyone who came asking, he’d patiently walk through the numbers --- how storage costs were split, how the goods remained each merchant’s own property, only stored together and matched to orders collectively. He never pushed anyone to decide. He just said: ”When you’ve made up your mind, come find me anytime.”

By the third day, there was a timber cutter Meru had already visited three times. The first two visits had been vague evasions. This time, he finally cracked. He pulled Meru into his backyard, pointed at the timber stacked there, and said quietly: ”I’m not afraid of the temple blocking my goods --- my logging crew’s up in the hills, they can’t touch them. What I’m afraid of is: if I bring the timber out to sell, and the temple blocks my sales route, the goods end up dead in my hands, and there’s no one to catch me.”

He looked at Meru. His tone was plain and honest. ”This centralized warehouse you’re talking about --- I believe you can make it work. But you have to build the warehouse first. Let me see a real storehouse. Let me see that the goods really stay dry, really stay safe once they’re inside. The moment that storehouse is standing --- I’ll sign. I’ll ship every last piece of timber I’ve got.”

On the evening of the fifth day, Meru called the two timber-workshop owners who’d clearly indicated willingness to join, and the rope-shop owner Kenas, into the small warehouse he’d borrowed on the edge of town --- the same warehouse where he’d once scratched drainage-channel boundary lines onto the spice-storage floor. The place smelled of dry timber and stone dust. Gravel powder covered the floor. Bundles of building materials and coils of rope lay stacked against the walls. Meru spread out the preliminary site-selection map for the centralized warehouse right there on the ground. The map showed two possible locations, their advantages and drawbacks laid out clearly:

First site: near the state granary’s abandoned quarry. Advantage --- close to the stone source, convenient stone turnaround, low transport cost; adjacent to the granary, security guaranteed, hard to harass. Drawback --- far from the Nile ferry crossing; timber and clay, after river offloading, would need an additional two li of overland hauling, adding roughly ten percent to transport costs.

Second site: on the high ground of the non-flood zone downstream. Advantage --- closer to the workshops of the main current suppliers, close to the ferry crossing; river offloading direct to warehouse, low timber and clay transport cost. Drawback --- the plot was raw land, the ground uneven, requiring a gravel bedding layer for hardening before construction could begin; paving cost about twenty percent higher than the first site; and far from the quarry, requiring a detour for stone transport.

There were also two main transport roads to weigh. One: the river road --- fast, capable of handling heavy carts, but the recent pre-flood surge had triggered a mudslide that blocked half the route. Minimum three days of manual labor to clear, plus slope reinforcement needed to prevent repeat blockage. Two: the village track inland --- more stable, unaffected by flood conditions, but entirely unpaved dirt road. Heavy carts would bog down in mud. The entire route would need gravel reinforcement, a far larger job.

Meru laid every pro and con on the table. Nothing hidden. ”Which site we pick, which road we build --- we don’t decide that today. Tomorrow, we all go survey together. Measure the distances. Calculate the costs. We don’t make a call until we’ve got it all clear. I’ll say it here: this alliance --- it’s not me calling the shots. We discuss it together. Whatever’s most cost-effective. Whatever’s most reliable.”

After he’d sent the two workshop owners home in their respective donkey carts, Meru sat alone at the warehouse’s single wooden table. In his hand was the latest moisture-tier storage classification chart that Lu Zhu had sent over via Seb that evening --- the diagram far more detailed than the crude four-zone sketch Meru had drawn himself. It specified everything clearly: shelf heights for each zone, ventilation-port positioning, rainy-season inspection frequency.

He stared at that chart for a long time. His fingertips brushed lightly over the zone lines on the paper. From the day over a decade ago when he’d walked out of an oppressed Nubian tribe carrying nothing but a small bundle of spices on his back, to building his own caravan --- his whole life had been about cargo. About protecting his own stock. About growing his own business. He’d never imagined there would come a day when he’d need to gather so many merchants together, to carry the livelihoods of so many people on his back.

Outside, the night over the West Bank settlement glowed with a scattered line of faint campfires --- the masons, still working late into the night, sieving the last batch of gravel for tomorrow’s third residential foundation. The firelight carried from a long way off --- faint, but steady.

Meru let out a soft sigh. Facing the empty warehouse, he spoke one sentence, very quietly --- not addressing anyone, not persuading himself of anything. Just the most honest self-assessment a merchant who’d fought his way out of an oppressed tribe could make, on the first night he faced the responsibility of organizing others to protect an entire trade’s livelihood:

”Before, all I wanted was to protect my own cargo. Then I found out one man can’t protect it alone. Now I want to try --- to bring these merchants who’ve been scared silent by the temple together, and give every one of them the spine to refuse predatory terms.”

He folded the moisture-tier chart and placed it in the inner compartment of his leather pouch --- the same compartment that held the three-line wooden-sign rules he’d written on the day the gravel market opened in the refugee camp. Then he blew out the oil lamp and stepped out of the warehouse. The night breeze met his face, carrying the Nile’s dampness. The distant campfires still burned, scattered across the darkness like stars.

He walked a few steps, then stopped, listening. The night wind carried the faint sound of footsteps---light, like someone keeping their distance. He turned and looked back. The dirt road was empty, only moonlight on the gravel. But the grass by the roadside had been pressed flat, still bent, not yet sprung back.

From the direction of the brick kilns, someone was moving in the darkness. Not a stonemason---it was the hauling crew’s foreman, the same one who’d been crouching on the distant stone pile for days, watching, his pipe glowing faint and red. He wasn’t approaching Meru’s warehouse. He only stood on the earth embankment above it, looking down. Beneath his feet, several half-dried clay bricks---new ones that Nefer’s women had just turned that afternoon, not yet brought under cover---crunched to powder under his sandals. Inside his tunic, a crumpled papyrus sheet bore a list of merchant names—scrawled, crooked, but legible. Come dawn, it would be in the hands of the West Bank shrine priest. He kept walking. He didn’t stop. He didn’t look back. Only the fine, dry sound of crushed brick trailed after him into the night wind. One side was building a shared livelihood. The other side was pressing down with old authority. Two forces, pulling in opposite directions across the West Bank night, neither having spoken aloud yet.
