Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 26: Chapter 2: Riverbank Quarry -- Breaking the Stone Ban

Three days after leaving Qiantiandu, the caravan reached the second station -- Baihedu.

The stretch of road from Qiantiandu to Baihedu was the most dramatic shift in terrain on the entire eastward journey. Within hours of leaving Qiantiandu on the first morning, the alluvial plain on both banks of the Nile began to contract. The cultivated strip along the river narrowed from roughly two hundred cubits across to less than half that. Palm groves and barley fields gave way to a low range of limestone hills -- rolling, endless, the stone a yellowish hue and loose-grained, their surfaces carved with horizontal grooves worn by windblown sand.

Lu Zhu walked with a piece of charcoal, sketching an east-west terrain cross-section on the palm paper in his hand. He marked three geomorphic units from the left bank: alluvial plain, palm-forest belt, limestone hills. Beneath the limestone layer on the cross-section he drew a question mark. On the West Bank he had seen only sedimentary stone and Nile alluvium. The broad limestone exposures that emerged from the surface on the east bank were something he had never encountered before crossing the river. His drafting habit had gained one new feature: the question-mark notation. Write what you do not know as a question, and wait for the next riverbank’s natural fault-scarp to answer it.

The first village they passed was called Nekhmet -- named for a minor local deity who had been dead for two hundred years, the name meaning ”the little well at the foot of the forgotten limestone hill.” At the village entrance stood a well fed by a natural spring seeping from the limestone fissures. The flow was so thin it could only be caught by a palm-sized scoop held under the single thread of water sliding down the rock face. An old woman sat beside the well. When she saw the caravan passing the village gate, she tilted her chin toward the hills to the east. ”Keep going, and when the sun sits straight overhead at noon, you will come to a patch of grey earth where no grass grows. Do not rest there. There is hidden alkali underground. If a man sits on that ground longer than it takes to eat a meal, the backs of his knees will start to blister.” She went back to combing her grey-white hair with the bone comb in her hand. Kamon recorded the well’s location and water-volume estimate in his logbook, and wrote four words in the notes: Hidden alkali zone -- no camping.

Beyond Nekhmet, the road began to climb. The cart wheels pressed into a tamped-earth road worn down by years of ox carts, the surface caked into a grey-white crust baked hard by the sun -- a natural seal formed by the previous rainy season’s Nile mud subjected to day after day of dry-season sun. The old stonemason Beken had an instinctive way of reading such a road: as he walked he kept tapping the crust with his toe, striking the same spot twice in quick succession to judge its thickness. He told Meket: ”Under this kind of crust the sublayer is red clay. If you dig it up when you are tamping a foundation and mix it with river sand at three-to-one, packed into the lowest bedding course under the wall base, it blocks moisture better than sand alone. Old Kingdom granary foundations used exactly that formula.”

At noon, when the sun was most brutal, the caravan crested the ridge line. From the hilltop they saw Baihedu in its entirety. Here the river was wrenched ninety degrees by a sheer vertical limestone cliff. The exposed face on the left bank showed bedding planes layered one upon another in cross-section. Baihedu itself was a market town set into the alluvial fan of the river bend. Just north of its center, a quarry compound enclosed by stone walls pushed its working face fully open against the cliff. A few half-finished basalt ashlar blocks leaned against the rock face -- stone the color of dark cyan, throwing back a thin, cold glint under the direct noon sun.

Kamon stood at the front, his eyes sweeping the quarry compound, gauging the height of the working face and the width of the haulage road. Hapy stood just behind his right shoulder, studying the riverbank. The terrain-reading instincts he had honed on the opposite bank of the West Bank were sharp enough now to let him draft a first-version zoning sketch before he even set foot on the ground. Lu Zhu drew a vertical line at the Baihedu position on his terrain cross-section -- a geological profile of the limestone cliff.

”Let’s go.” Kamon started down the slope.

Baihedu was larger than Qiantiandu. The stone from the temple quarry at the town center, split straight from the cliff face, was among the best quality anywhere on the stretch from the West Bank up to Thebes. But what Kamon had not counted on was that the temple works office had already bolted the door shut.

The quarry superintendent was a balding man in his early fifties, named Ptah, who had spent twenty years managing stone allocation in the temple system. He no longer dared even to take payment. ”It is not that I will not sell. Word has come down from above: all craftsmen’s caravans traveling under royal summons to the new capital -- not one grain of stone leaves this quarry. Go back and tell the man in your guild named Kamon. I am only following orders.”

Kamon stood at the quarry gate, looking at the basalt fracture faces exposed on the cliff. ”We only want a batch of seconds -- not your prime material. Just ungraded crushed-stone tailings would do.”

”Ungraded crushed stone is also forbidden. As I said: not one grain.”

Kamon said nothing more. But before Kamon turned away, Ptah did something a quarry superintendent should never do: he pulled his right hand out of his robe and spread his five fingers, palm up. That was the hand-sign the old quarry stonemasons used among themselves. It meant: It is not me blocking you. It is someone above me, blocking the man behind you. Kamon saw the hand. He gave no reply. He turned and walked toward the riverbank.

Less than fifty paces from the quarry gate, the young stonemason Meket was the first to lose patience. He dropped his chisel bag on the ground with a thud. Inside that bag were five stone chisels, every one of them ground and edge-dressed with his own hands on the West Bank riverbank. ”We walked a whole station to get here. Last station -- Qiantiandu -- they said the ban had choked off stone supply at the town level. By the second station the temple men have just bolted the door dead. Not one grain? Graded crushed stone on the West Bank riverbank is the cheapest consumable there is. And they are banning even consumables. This is not about regulating stone. This is about regulating the direction we are walking.”

The old stonemason Beken crouched by the roadside, his forty-year-old stone hammer in his hand. A dark-brown wear-mark ran down the handle from the hammer head to the third knuckle joint -- the stain of fifty years of palm sweat and stone dust soaked into the wood grain. He ran his thumb along that wear-mark three times: one pass of the left thumb across the hammer mark meant ”today I have no stone in my hands to chisel.” Three passes meant ”the day after tomorrow, maybe none either.” On the third pass he stopped. ”I have chiseled stone for nearly forty years on the West Bank. The West Bank’s main material is sedimentary stone. We came to the east bank, and at the second station we have hit a basalt ban that only exists on the east bank. That means the entire east-bank quarry system and our West Bank riverbank quarrying methods are two different things. Two different things -- pinned down by the same single ban. That is not regulation. That is a rope.”

Beside Beken, another old stonemason -- Enhe, Kamon’s junior brother -- stood at the roadside without making a sound. But he was gripping his leather mason’s apron so hard that the three cracks on his knuckles, split open by the sun, all went white. He could accept a ban. He had lived through three quarry closures on the West Bank with his own eyes. But all three of those bans had targeted prime material. Never once had a ban extended to crushed stone. To see even tailings covered by a ban -- in forty-nine years of life, this was the first time.

Tut -- a small cargo owner who ferried lime from the opposite bank -- stepped out from under the palms and walked up to Kamon. ”That crushed stone you are sorting on the riverbank -- I will haul it. I have my own boat, moored at the old ferry crossing on the far bank. Ptah’s authority does not reach the water route on the other side. Your crushed stone, once it reaches the opposite bank, I have a place to store it. The far bank falls outside the ban’s territorial reach. The ban written on paper covers the east bank. The far bank is a separate account.” Meru, standing beside him, had already written the four characters ”boat freight -- far bank” into his ledger. At the Baihedu station entry he drew three arrows, all pointing upward.

Kamon turned and walked toward the riverbank. Hapy followed, drawing the crowbar with four anti-slip grooves from his belt and slapping the bar head once against his left palm. The sound was dull, muted -- but it was the first striking signal sent outward.

Here at Baihedu, the Nile bent at a near-right angle. The current, driving down from upstream, slammed against the limestone cliff on the north bank and flushed out a broad riverbank on the inside of the turn. The bank was paved with crushed stone and cobbles, all transported and deposited by the flow. Hapy crouched down and picked up a fist-sized cobble. He weighed it in his palm, then struck the stone face with his small iron hammer. The hammer tip tapped the center of the slab lightly. The echo was not the brittle ring of West Bank sedimentary stone. It was deeper but remarkably even -- no hollow drumming.

Lu Zhu walked over and crouched beside him. He took the cobble and turned it over to examine the fracture face. The stone core was blue-grey, the lamination free of weathering powder, the grain fine and dense, running top-to-bottom in the direction of water flow. He pinched the gripping end between thumb and forefinger and twisted. The slab held fast. ”This is igneous rock -- not sedimentary. There is volcanic ruins upstream. Nile tributaries have washed all the stone in this stretch onto this riverbank. Hardness is two grades higher than West Bank riverbank stone. It can take load-bearing wall foundations. Hapy, note this -- the effective stone-bed thickness and distribution density on this riverbank is better than what we had on the West Bank. But the sorting criteria cannot transfer directly. The method for reading internal fractures in igneous rock is different from sedimentary.”

Hapy pressed his ear close to the slab and struck again. The sound was full and solid, no fracture echo. ”Load-bearing, yes. But it is not basalt. Used as a rammer head to break stone, it will not shatter. Placed as bedding stone at the lowest course of a wall -- no problem.”

Kamon crouched nearby and struck the stone face several times with his own chisel. The echo rang crisp and bright. He had listened to stone voices for over thirty years. What he heard now was not the sustained, rolling crispness of the West Bank riverbank, but single-syllable hammer notes, each cobble sounding alone. ”The whole riverbank is this material. But these cobbles are rounded -- they cannot be laid directly. They need sorting first. Cobbles bigger than a fist, split into fractured faces and graded by size into three ranks: base-slab stone, bedding-course stone, fill stone. Fist-sized and under, reserve for cellar moisture-barrier crushed stone -- same principle as the West Bank granary moisture-break layer.”

Lu Zhu took the four-step rapid-assessment method he had distilled from the West Bank riverbank exploration and wrote it on palm paper for Hapy. First, read the water-mark direction. Second, listen to the hammer tone. Third, scratch for hardness. Fourth, examine the stone-bed section grain. ”This is not a standard. Standards require four or more stations to establish. This is a temporary reference table. Its effective period is one station. At the third station, new data must overwrite it.”

Hapy did not begin sorting immediately. He called Meket, User, and two other apprentices to the riverbank and had them stretch a palm-fiber measuring cord lengthwise along the bank as a baseline. The line ran from directly under the cliff foot toward the ferry crossing, eighty cubits in total length. Every ten cubits he drove a wooden stake, and to each stake he tied a random cobble collected from that survey segment as a representative sample.

He started walking from the first segment. Segment one was tight against the cliff foot. Here the water’s impact force was strongest. The cobble surfaces were covered in white impact scratches from collisions against one another. Hapy had User take five random cobbles from this segment and strike each one beside his ear. Three of the five emitted a very short cavity echo at the moment of impact -- not a hidden crack, but micro-fractures produced when the stone core struck hard rock on the riverbed as the current drove it downstream. Lu Zhu struck them again to confirm: ”Micro-fractures. Cannot enter the load-bearing course. Use for road-paving crushed stone.”

User wrote in his notes: Survey Segment One, current-impact zone, usable rate approximately forty percent. After writing, he looked again at the three rejected cobbles and noticed that the hidden-crack echo carried an extremely fine sandpaper-scrape sound at the tail end of the strike -- the sound of stone powder inside the crack rubbing under sonic vibration. The cavity echo did not have this tail-end friction sound. He reported the discovery to Lu Zhu. Lu Zhu had him close his eyes and strike ten consecutive cobbles, classifying them by strike tone with no visual input. By the seventh cobble, User’s hand stopped in midair -- he had heard a very faint sandpaper-scrape at the tail of this cobble’s tone. He opened his eyes. The fracture face showed a hairline hidden crack running from the exact center of the stone core outward. ”At the seventh one, you started hearing your own finger noise. Next time when you strike, release your fingers completely from the crowbar handle -- support it only with the heel of your palm.” User placed the seventh cobble into the bag marked ”Hidden Crack -- Road Paving.”

Segments two through five were the middle stretch of the riverbank -- the optimal stone zone. After walking all four segments, Hapy arrived at a figure: the usable rate for cobbles in these four middle survey segments was seventy to seventy-five percent. Nearly twenty percentage points higher than what they had achieved on the West Bank riverbank. After finishing the sixth segment, he stopped and wrote six characters onto his crowbar handle with charcoal: Igneous riverbank -- prioritize fracture, deprioritize lithology.

Segments seven and eight, nearest the ferry crossing, were the tail end of the bank. Cobble size here was visibly smaller than in the middle zone, and the surfaces carried a thin layer of greenish river algae. Hapy had User take six water-soaked cobbles from this zone and spread them on a dry stone slab to air for roughly half a shichen. Four recovered to the middle-zone quality level. One developed a hidden crack when it dried and contracted too fast. One turned brittle-white on the surface. He had User note: Segments seven and eight cobbles require minimum half-shichen air-drying before use.

By the time Hapy had converted all eight segments of survey data into a simple profile map, the total effective stone volume on the riverbank was sufficient to support foundation repairs for every civilian house in Baihedu, plus roughly one quarter of the caravan’s stone reserve for the next station.

On the slope above the riverbank, the villagers of Baihedu stood in a ring at the high ground. In their lives, the largest stone-sorting operation they had ever seen was Superintendent Ptah using two crowbars and four quarrymen to load one cart beneath the cliff face. Today they were seeing this: an eighty-cubit palm-fiber baseline, eight marked stakes, five craftsmen simultaneously sampling across eight survey segments, striking and zone-marking every stone -- and all of it proceeding faster than the quarry’s own loading pace.

That afternoon, the villagers of Baihedu heard that the West Bank craftsmen were teaching people how to quarry and sort stone on the riverbank, free of charge. People began to gather in a steady trickle. A young woman named Merit stood on the riverbank slope with a child in her arms. Her husband was the ferryman at the crossing. He had come home the night before and said one thing: ”That stone-mason foreman from the West Bank -- what he was talking about was not stone.” She came today. She took no material and learned no craft. She was simply there.

An old farmer in his sixties, Hathor, could not grip a hammer with his right hand. But the pads of his fingers could still read fine cracks on a stone face. Kamon called Meket over and placed a rejected piece of crushed basalt into the old man’s hand. ”The stone here sorts into three grades. You can feel the difference. Anything with surface weathering goes to the right. Stone with the core still intact goes to the left. Your hand is the grading screen.” Hathor ran his severed-finger pads across the stone face. The first piece he pushed left. The second, right. The third, back left. All correct. That afternoon, User wrote ”Hathor -- left-hand grading” into the supplementary notes of the sorting standard procedure.

A swarm of quarry workers’ children ran circles around the stone piles, chanting their own self-invented ”stone spell”: ”Base-slab stone heaviest, bedding stone hardest, fill stone mostest.” An eight-year-old girl ran up to Kamon and pointed at a cobble that had been rejected to the road-paving pile, demanding to know why it could not go inside the circle. Kamon crouched down, turned the cobble over. A through-crack ran from one end of the stone face to the other. He traced it with his fingernail. Stone dust sifted from the crack’s center. ”Because the seam inside it was already broken when it fractured off the volcano upstream and tumbled into the Nile. It is not that we cannot break it. It is that it already broke, inside.” The little girl stared for a moment, then picked up a cobble of her own, tapped it with a small stone, pressed it to her ear. ”Not broken.” She placed the cobble solemnly on top of the secondary bedding-stone pile. It was her first sorting result on this riverbank, and hers alone.

Mahet -- the ferryman’s sister-in-law, whose husband had cut his calf on crushed stone at the quarry the year before -- stood at the end of the stone-sorting line and swept a clean patch of ground with a willow-branch broom. Bag by bag, she carried all the rejected road-paving stone in linen sacks to the far end of the haulage access path. She drew a circle at the end of the access path with a willow branch and marked that spot as the terminal station of the stone-sorting line. For the entire afternoon she let no one misplace a single piece of crushed stone. When Lu Zhu revised the profile map that evening, he added a new symbol at the end: M -- terminal station, site maintenance.

Three local young craftsmen, all around thirty years old, stood aside watching Hapy strike two stones. After watching, they picked up their own hammers and started working. In under three shichen that afternoon, they had cleared the top layer of waste river mud from the northern section of the bank near the ferry crossing. The underlying cobble quality exposed beneath was an entire grade higher than the southern section.

The quarry owner Ptah slipped down to the riverbank near dusk. He had shed his temple-works-office robe and put on a washed-out, coarse linen tunic. But the villagers still recognized him by the gleam of his bald scalp, glossy from a full day of sun. A group of women sorting stone spotted him, and one of the older women called out across the stone piles: ”Ho -- the great superintendent graces the riverbank! The ban on his lips has not even dried yet.”

Ptah pretended not to hear. But he stood behind the stone pile for a full half-shichen, and he was not watching the sorting progress. He was watching the people. He saw the West Bank craftsmen crouched on the riverbank, turning over every cobble to read its fracture face, listening to the hammer tone, sorting into piles -- the exact same sequence his own master had taught him on the mountain twenty years ago when he first learned stone grading. He crouched down beside Hapy, picked up a piece of secondary bedding stone, and studied its fracture face for a long time. Then, voice lowered, he said to Meru: ”This material of yours -- one cart. Sell it to me. It will not go through the quarry accounts. For outside delivery, I issue no invoice. I will bring my own donkey cart to haul it. Name your price.”

Meru flipped to a blank page of palm paper in his ledger and drew four cells along the bottom edge with charcoal: Stone type, Payment method, Shipping-document form, Amendment date. He did not start filling from the top -- filling the front terms fully would make Ptah realize this was a formal supply agreement, and he would recoil at the word ”ban.” What Meru handed him was a blank sheet with only the bottom-row format, four cells along the lower edge looking more like a memorandum than a contract. The scale was just small enough for Ptah to treat it, psychologically, as ”a minor matter.”

Ptah stared at the contract for a long time. Meru’s contract format had one crucial design feature: it did not record the stone’s place of origin. If Ptah signed this contract, he could enter the source on the quarry’s books as ”Quarry waste-stone discard pool,” not ”Baihedu riverbank crushed stone.” To the temple works office accounting system, the waste discard pool fell outside the ban’s jurisdiction -- that pool already contained the seconds rejected during the quarry’s own prime-material production. No one tracked the particle density of seconds.

Ptah’s finger traced the edge of the contract back and forth three times, retreating each time it reached the signature line. His eyes stopped on the blank cell for ”Payment method.” The guild was not asking for gold. It was asking for copper ingots. The quarry’s books moved in gold, not copper. On the basis of payment method alone, this transaction was already diverted onto a branch road that did not lead to the ban. In the end, he added a handwritten condition in the margin: ”Each cart to be accompanied by one small slab of crushed stone for hammer-tone verification.” Then he signed his full name -- in charcoal -- and stamped beside it with his personal superintendent’s seal from the temple works office. He did not press it onto the ink; he stamped where the stone sample and the paper’s back met, so that every goods handover would require re-verification of the hammer tone.

Meru took the contract but did not sign immediately. Instead, he first drew a thin crushed-stone sample slab from the inner pocket of his tunic, folded it into the palm paper, and used this slab to press down the extra line Ptah had added. A faint mark of stone dust transferred onto the paper -- the guild’s anti-counterfeit impression. ”Long-term supply. Every batch of crushed stone, send your own man to verify. Payment in copper ingots on the spot upon verification. If you are short on hands, bring your own donkey to haul it.”

Ptah stood, slapped the river sand off his knees, took two steps, and stopped. He did not turn around. His right shoulder, stripped of the official robe, stiffened slightly in the evening breeze -- that was the shoulder that had been blasted by crushed-stone dust on the quarry cliff face for twenty years. He rubbed it once with his left hand and spoke low: ”Twenty years I have worn this miserable post. This is the first time I have pulled a cart home that was full of solid crushed stone. Before this, every load delivered to the worksite was half crushed-stone dust mixed in for weight. This batch -- I checked it myself. This batch is material for human use. It will not crush.”

That night, the farmers of Baihedu used the crushed stone sorted from the riverbank to repair the wall foundations of three households. Kamon took Meket and several old stonemasons door to door, inspecting the bedding-stone thickness and mortar ratios at each foundation -- no charge, just demonstrating the guild’s standard workmanship for the locals to see.

At the riverbank, during final cleanup, Hapy called User over and taught him, hand over hand, how to read a cobble’s fracture grain. Not with the eyes first. Run the fingernail across it crosswise, then run the finger pad lengthwise from core to outer edge. ”Fingernail crosswise -- rough patches are the weathering layer, smooth patches are the stone core. Finger pad from core outward -- if it gets coarser the further out you go, there is no hidden crack inside this cobble.” User closed his eyes and scraped a few stones, then abruptly opened them again. He took a stone he had thought was good material and scraped it crosswise with his nail. A very fine line of white powder fell out from the middle of the stone face. He turned the stone toward the moonlight to check the position of that grey line. Hidden crack. He drew a careful mark in his notes for that reject piece and placed it into the road-paving bag.

By the campfire, Meru filed Ptah’s contract into the ledger, then marked the Baihedu branch private-well location on the station map. Behind him, Seb was pulling a palm-fiber measuring cord along the riverbank’s side slope, tracing the line of Lu Zhu’s stone material flow diagram to lay out a new haulage access path. This would become the first section of reusable heavy-cart access road on the next station’s building-materials supply line.

When the sky had fully darkened, the riverbank campfires merged into two large blazes. Around one fire sat the stone-mason crew and the young villagers who had come to help. Hapy sat in the middle, using his short-handled crowbar with four anti-slip grooves to draw a terrain-prediction map of the next station eastward along the Nile -- working out the river bend angle and the approximate extent of the next meander’s riverbank. ”Following the Nile’s downstream course, one more station and the channel narrows before the next bend. Narrow channel means fast current. Stone on the right bank will mostly be hard-rock fragments washed down by the water. The only variable is whether there is a quarry roadblock at that spot. If we hit another ban, we will need another riverbank.”

Around the other fire sat Meru, the contract already bearing the impression of stone dust, in his hand. Lu Zhu sat beside him, copying the four-step rapid-assessment method onto a fresh sheet of palm paper with charcoal. The grain characteristics, strike-tone features, hardness index, and fracture structure of the Baihedu riverbank stone were all quantified into four separate symbol notations below a hand-drawn riverbank profile.

When the moon climbed directly overhead, the camp fell quiet. Kamon sat on the stone closest to the river’s edge, his back to the fire, the downstream direction of the Nile before him. He could hear the deep, low-frequency thrum of the current colliding with the cliff at the river bend -- the weight of water, a muffled boom that could travel all the way to Thebes. He had heard this same muffled boom at Qiantiandu. Back then he had thought it was the sound of someone far away striking a marble slab buried in the river mud with a stone hammer. Now, hearing it again, he was certain it was not bedrock. It was the low-frequency resonance of river velocity at the bend: the deeper the water, the lower the frequency. This channel could carry heavy cargo vessels. If a fleet were shipping stone from upstream to downstream, Baihedu was a natural deep-water berthing point. But there was no fleet. The quarry ban had choked all building-material movement between upstream and downstream. Good water, with no boats on it. A good stone bank, with a ban pressing down on it.

Meru walked over and sat beside him, offering his pipe. Kamon took a draw and handed it back. He said one sentence: ”Third station -- we need to find somewhere we can extract stone from a riverbank without colliding head-on with a temple quarry. Not in the town center. On a riverbank outside town. And it has to be upstream, not downstream.”

Meru did not answer him. He tapped his pipe twice against a stone, flipped to a blank page in his ledger, and drew a minimal sketch of the Nile’s course. He placed a dot at the second station, Baihedu, and drew the curvature of a river bend at the approximate location of the third station downstream -- replicating the prediction curve Hapy had drawn in the sand. ”If the third station is the same situation -- the quarry will not sell. We find a riverbank outside town. The advantage of our cart specifications and sorting system is out there, not inside the town walls.”

At dawn, the villagers of Baihedu began gathering at the ferry crossing to see the caravan off. Nebet’s young daughter ran to the front, clutching the cracked clay jar in her hands. The jar was already empty. She had come to retrieve her mother’s only clay jar. Meket walked over from the camp stone wall carrying the bone hairpin, intending to return it. But Nebet did not take it. She looked at her daughter’s hands wrapped tightly around the jar, then pressed the hairpin back into Meket’s hand. ”The jar is mine. The hairpin is yours. Next time your road passes Baihedu -- if I am still living here, come knock. I will boil water for you.” Then she turned and walked away. Meket stood where he was. He tucked the bone hairpin into the side of the bundle of stone-chisel sheaths he carried.

Pasher stood on the stone steps of the ferry crossing. At his feet lay two freshly braided coils of palm-fiber rope -- he had worked through the night using the last batch of good palm bark in his storehouse. Hapy took the rope and weighed it in his palm. The braiding density was high, done with the wet-braiding method. After drying, it would not shrink or loosen. This was the kind of braid the inland-river boatmen used for mooring lines. He measured two fist-widths along his crowbar handle and drew two horizontal lines with charcoal -- meaning, before they next met, he would re-braid the anti-slip grooves on his bar with this new rope.

Old Hathor did not appear among the send-off crowd. But his old donkey was tethered under the old willow outside the ferry crossing. On the donkey’s back sat a crude clay jar wrapped in old linen. Inside was the bitter willow-root tea Hathor brewed himself. Under the jar was pressed a piece of crushed stone, four words written on it in charcoal: Eastward -- for the road.

When the caravan departed Baihedu, the sun had just risen to about three cubits above the low cropland on the east bank. The cart wheels pressed their last rut into the haulage access path. This path would stay behind at Baihedu. It would not be dismantled. The rainy-season water would wash over it once, then fresh river sand would cover it. But the roadbed was rammed from cobble tailings -- sand could not wash that away. The road shape would hold. Like that old access path left behind on the West Bank riverbank: from the day it was laid to now, two flood seasons had passed over it, and the cart ruts were still there. Not because the road surface had not degraded, but because the ground, compacted again and again, had itself become road.

Kamon looked back one last time. The Baihedu riverbank caught the morning light in a wash of pale gold -- basalt particles suspended in the river sand, refracting under the low-angle sun. A glitter that not every riverbank possessed.
