Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Aftermath — Scorched Earth and Scattered Paths

On the fourth day after the Libyan cavalry withdrew, rain fell over the West Bank.

Not the Nile flood season’s drowning downpour. A thin, scattered drizzle that hissed into white smoke where it touched charred palm fronds. When it stopped, the smell of scorched earth grew worse — the water had turned over the humus buried under ash, and the whole oasis ruin was steeped in a wet reek of cold charcoal and rotted barley stalks.

Lu Zhu stood outside the intake shelter, watching a thin mist rise from the ruined barley fields. Figures moved through the mist — not soldiers. Farmers. The villagers who’d fled into the palm grove when the cavalry charged were trickling back. They didn’t walk into the ruins. They just stood at the field edges, looking at the earth churned up by hooves and the fire-blackened stubble, motionless.

No one cried. They’d already finished crying.

The shelter now held nearly sixty people — wounded, elderly, children, soldiers still feverish. Shafi’s styptic powder had run out three times. Imset, after four near-sleepless days, had finally collapsed against a palm-timber support beam before dawn, still clutching half a charcoal styptic cake he hadn’t finished grinding. Nefer’s women cooked four cauldrons of barley porridge a day; by the fifth cauldron, the salt had run out. The wounded needed salt — blood-loss casualties couldn’t recover on plain starch — but the salt jar was scraped empty. Nefer crouched in front of it for a long time. Then she stood.

”I’m going to find salt. If no one lends it, I’ll trade for it. If no one trades, I’ll run a tab. Wounded men not getting salted porridge isn’t about my pride.”

She took two women toward the market district. Came back an hour later carrying half a sack of rock salt. Not borrowed. Not on credit. She’d traded every roll of dried beef left in the shelter for it. When Lu Zhu asked what the wounded would eat for protein after this, she said she’d already worked it out on the walk back — Meru’s next shipment of beef trimmings from Memphis, she was taking forty percent off the top.

”How did you convince him?”

”Didn’t convince him. I gave him a ten percent processing discount.”

Lu Zhu looked at this woman — caked in mud and salt — and asked nothing further.

Kamon received his land confiscation notice on the morning of the fifth day.

It wasn’t delivered by Nekhem’s people. A junior scribe from the Temple Land Office, riding a grey donkey with two limestone boundary markers strapped to its back. The papyrus notice was brief: the two plots of farmland registered to Kamon ben Anesh — the third row north of the Oasis Village entrance — having lain uncultivated for three consecutive seasons due to the registered cultivator’s death in combat, were hereby acquired by the Amun Temple Land Office under Statute Seven, Clause Three, for the purpose of restoring agricultural productivity. Purchase price: three-tenths of market value, calculated per the land rates of the pharaoh’s coronation year three centuries prior. Payable in temple granary scrip.

The young scribe finished reading the notice aloud. Kamon was crouched beside the intake shelter, stitching palm-fiber cord through a new windbreak curtain. His sewing was terrible — he’d unpicked and re-stitched the same seam three times, and the edge was a mess of crooked threads. He listened to the entire notice without stopping his hands. Finished the last stitch.

Then he stood, took the papyrus, and read it. He wasn’t a strong reader, but his own name and the words ”third row” — those five hieroglyphic signs — he recognized.

”Three seasons.” His voice was flat, so flat even Lu Zhu couldn’t read it.

”Yes.” The scribe’s tone was standard bureaucratic — not arrogant, not apologetic. ”Statute requires the temple to acquire any farmland left uncultivated for three consecutive seasons. Your eldest son died in combat. Your younger son was conscripted. The two plots currently have no cultivator. They meet acquisition criteria.”

”They meet criteria.” Kamon folded the notice and tucked it into his tool pouch — the same leather bag that held the palm-paper strip with his son’s name on the casualty list. The strip and the notice now sat in the same compartment.

”The boundary markers — do your people install them, or should I take them myself?”

”Our men have already gone to the field to place them. You don’t need to do anything.”

”Fine.” Kamon turned back to the windbreak curtain, picked up the next length of palm-fiber cord, and started the next stitch.

The scribe rode away on his grey donkey. Lu Zhu watched from the shelter corner. He didn’t walk over — not because he didn’t know what to say, but because he understood that Kamon’s silence right now wasn’t the kind that needed breaking. It was the silence of a man who’d stacked three stones and was looking for a fourth. He hadn’t found it yet.

The fourth stone found him that afternoon.

The man who arrived wasn’t from the temple. He was a household steward in bleached linen — a nobleman’s private majordomo, riding not a donkey but a groomed chestnut horse. He’d come from Memphis, inquiring his way through the West Bank until he found the intake shelter, where Kamon was on the roof of a refugee tent, repairing palm thatch.

”Master Kamon? The finest mason west of the Nile?”

Kamon looked down from the roof frame. The steward stood beside a pile of gravel, carefully keeping his bleached linen clear of the dust, wearing the particular smile of an estate manager — polite, calculating, and impossible to read.

”Who’s asking?”

”Nebwa, steward to the household of Viscount Padiyamun. The viscount has acquired a new estate plot east of Memphis. He intends to build a private residence before the rains — two courtyards, a garden, a lotus pond. He needs the finest mason available for the stone foundations and courtyard walls. Three months’ work. Wages —” he paused, gauging the psychological price point ”— double the royal construction standard. Paid in full. No delays. Thirty percent upfront.”

The air went still.

Double wages. Cash. Thirty percent upfront. This was an offer no job-site foreman could refuse — especially one who’d just lost his ancestral land, buried his eldest son, had his younger son conscripted, and seen his crew shrink from seventeen masons to four. This steward hadn’t come by accident. He knew exactly what Kamon’s situation was. A man who’d lost everything was cheapest to buy — not because of greed, but because he needed something to hold.

Lu Zhu stood behind the shelter’s linen windbreak, listening through the fabric. He didn’t make a sound. He knew Kamon would take the job.

”Who drew the residence plans?” Kamon asked.

”The viscount’s architect from Memphis. Old Kingdom symmetrical courtyard layout. All stone shipped from Upper Nile. The foundation requires carved lotus and papyrus patterns.”

Kamon was silent for a long time. He stayed crouched on the roof frame, palm-fiber cord in hand, those stone-fighter’s eyes revealing nothing in the low sun. Then he did something — in Lu Zhu’s assessment, something more precise than weeping or cursing would have been.

He set the cord down.

”Three months on site. My crew works the site but doesn’t live in Memphis — I come back every day. I need to see this shelter every evening.”

”That can be arranged.”

”Upfront payment raised to forty percent.”

Nebwa’s smile didn’t move, but the calculator behind his eyes shifted gear. ”Thirty-five.”

”Forty.” Kamon’s tone was identical to the one he’d used three months ago, kicking an empty reed basket at the granary gate — no room, no concession. ”My eldest son just died in combat. My younger son’s been conscripted. My ancestral land was seized by the temple this morning. I’m not negotiating with you — I’m telling you my price. If it’s too high, find another mason. The West Bank has plenty of stone. It doesn’t have plenty of old masters who can carve lotus petals into a foundation course.”

Nebwa thought for a moment. Then he dipped his chin — not a bow. A shrewd steward acknowledging a worthy counterpart.

”Forty percent. I’ll have the plans and the advance delivered tomorrow morning.”

After the steward left, Kamon sat on the roof frame for a long time. Then he pulled the land confiscation notice and his son’s casualty slip from his tool pouch and laid them both on his knee, looking out at the ruined barley field slowly darkening beyond the shelter.

Lu Zhu stepped out from behind the windbreak.

”Three months — you’ll be back before the rains?”

”I’ll be back.” Kamon didn’t look at him. His voice was quiet. ”The money he’s paying — I can rebuild the crew. Four men back to fourteen. After the rains, if there’s work here, I can take it.”

Lu Zhu knew this wasn’t the full truth. Or rather, not the only truth. Kamon didn’t need to explain to him why he was taking a nobleman’s luxury mansion contract — he was a sixty-year-old mason who’d lost his son and his land in the same four-day span. Any job that gave him stone to chisel, plans to read, a site to run — that was pain relief. The viscount’s garden and carved lotus weren’t what he wanted. But they’d keep him from looking at the casualty slip in his tool pouch.

Lu Zhu didn’t call him out. He just said one thing.

”Lotus petals in stone — don’t dull your chisel. Hard to find a good blacksmith right now.”

The corner of Kamon’s mouth moved. Not a smile. The smallest possible response — a man in a tunnel, acknowledging a light held steady at the entrance.

Asaf showed up at the Amun Temple Land Office on the afternoon of the sixth day.

He wasn’t delivering reports. He was applying for a transfer.

From conscription clerk to the Temple Land Office — a position directly under Nekhem’s jurisdiction. The reason written on the application was formal: seven years of service, intimate knowledge of West Bank farmland ownership and labor distribution, able to provide accurate archival support for temple land acquisition. He didn’t write the real reason. But Lu Zhu knew — and Asaf knew — that beneath every line of that application ran the same sentence: I don’t want to drag fifteen-year-olds out of their fields anymore.

When he came to find Lu Zhu, he was wearing a new bleached linen kilt — not formal robes, but a clear upgrade from the grey, travel-worn tunic of his conscription years. His wooden tally-board had been replaced with a copper plate — standard issue for Temple Land Office clerks. His hair was trimmed shorter. He looked, by every metric, more presentable than before.

But his eyes held something Lu Zhu hadn’t seen there. Not the sharpness — those eyes had always been sharp. Something deeper. Buried under all the presentability. The look of a man who hadn’t slept the night before submitting a transfer request.

”Nekhem approved it?” Lu Zhu asked.

”Same day. He signed the application personally. Said one line — ’We welcome capable talent to the Temple Land Office’ — then had his assign me a desk. I start tomorrow. East wing of the temple complex. About three li from your granary.”

”He knows you used to be a conscription clerk?”

”He knows. He also said — ’A conscription clerk’s archival experience is valuable. We hope you’ll help the temple improve its farmland ownership data.’” Asaf repeated the line verbatim, in the tone of a man reading aloud from an interrogation transcript that happened to bear his name.

Lu Zhu studied him. He realized, suddenly, that Asaf wasn’t reporting to him. He was saying goodbye. Not physically — a man who’d escaped the conscription department but wasn’t sure he hadn’t jumped into another pit, making a last confirmation with someone still standing outside.

”Nekhem’s office — can you access it freely?”

”Land Office clerks have the right to review all unclassified land archives.”

”Good.” Lu Zhu said. ”Then do something for me. Imset’s frame-up from three years ago — the falsified accounts Nekhem used to convict him. There should be a backup copy in the temple’s internal archives. The witness statements. The procurement records. If you can find the originals, they’ll have traces of fabrication. You’ve been a conscription clerk for seven years — you know better than anyone what a fake record looks like compared to a real one.”

Something stirred in Asaf’s eyes. Not hope. The movement of a man about to enter a dark room, registering that someone had pressed a lamp into his hand.

”I’ll try.”

”Not try. You go to work every day. You review archives normally. You have tea with your colleagues. Spend two months in that office. Learn their filing system inside out. Nekhem thinks you’re his man now — he’ll drop his guard. A clerk his superior trusts is the safest kind of spy.”

Asaf was silent for a long time.

”I’m not sure if I’m a spy — or if I’ve already become his man.”

”You don’t know yet,” Lu Zhu said. ”But that sentence you just said — a real traitor never asks himself that question.”

Asaf said nothing. He tucked the copper plate under his arm and turned toward the temple’s east wing. Three paces out, he stopped and half-turned.

”Kamon’s son — his name was on the conscription list I wrote. I copied it onto that list with my own hand. Every conscripted man — seven years of them — every name, I wrote.” His voice was very quiet, but there was no evasion in it. ”I used to think if my handwriting was neat enough, the thing itself would feel less heavy. Then my handwriting kept getting neater, and the thing kept getting heavier.”

He kept walking. His back grew smaller and smaller, and then the West Bank road took him.

Meru’s temporary market opened on the morning of the seventh day.

Not the fixed stall-and-awning setup of the market district — that required palm-timber frames and rammed-earth flooring, at least half a month’s work. What he built was smaller, faster, cruder. Six rows of palm-frond ground-mats, three mats per row, each mat separated by three paces of crushed-stone firebreak — salvaged gravel from the intake shelter, laid between stalls to stop a cooking fire from spreading. No signage. No shelving. No canopy. Each stall-holder put their goods directly on the mat — half-sacks of cracked barley dug from ruins, clay jars salvaged from the battlefield, desiccated dates cut from charred palm groves, palm-leaf fans woven by a refugee girl. Not merchandise. Anything that could be traded for a mouthful of food.

The idea had come from Nefer.

On her salt run to the market district, she’d noticed a problem. The refugees pouring out of the Oasis Village and surrounding hamlets had countless small, tradeable items — but they couldn’t access the market district. Those stalls were permanent. They charged fees. They required a sponsor. A crowd of mud-caked refugees couldn’t get past the market gate. But these people needed to trade for food — not free handouts. Trade. They had goods. They just had nowhere to put them down.

Meru thought about this for half a morning. Then he did something — he cleared out his own spare lot next to the market district. The plot had been a dumping ground for empty reed baskets and frayed palm rope from his Nubian caravans. He had his men clear the junk in an afternoon, laid out eighteen stall boundaries with gravel lines, and hung a wooden sign at the entrance.

Three lines of charcoal script:

One — No stall fees.

Two — Clean your own stall. No open fires within the gravel boundaries.

Three — All transactions in barter or grain-denominated. No credit.

The hieroglyphs were crooked — Meru had only been learning Egyptian writing for three months — but every line was legible. Lu Zhu stood under that wooden sign for a long time. The third line — grain-denominated, no credit — was the mechanism that made the whole thing work. This wasn’t charity. This was a market. Refugees weren’t lining up for handouts. They were trading. A person who trades something they own for a meal, versus a person who queues for a bowl of free porridge — the psychological distance between those two things is as wide as the Nile is from a drainage ditch.

On the first morning, there were seven stalls. On the second, thirteen. On the third, two secondhand pottery hawkers from the market district showed up — not refugees, but they’d heard there were no stall fees, and they’d come with their wares.

Meru stood at the edge of the market, charcoal and palm-paper in hand, logging the day’s transaction volumes and goods categories stall by stall. His system was rough — nothing like the standardized inventory tracking Lu Zhu knew from another life — but he’d invented his own shorthand: diagonal lines for different goods categories, circled numbers for grain-denominated unit values. It was, in essence, a primitive warehouse management system — fixing the movement of people, goods, and prices onto a flat surface.

Lu Zhu watched him for a while. He remembered a line from his previous life: the best logistics systems are never designed — they’re forced into existence. Meru’s improvised bookkeeping had been forced into existence by three days of two hundred refugees needing food.

”You told me before — this year’s plan was to establish the Nubia-to-Memphis grain route,” Lu Zhu said.

”That was before.” Meru didn’t look up. His charcoal was still moving fast across the palm-paper. ”The new plan is to get every refugee household on the West Bank into this market. They have goods. They just need a place to set them down. This market doesn’t need permanent storefronts and registered merchants. It needs gravel stall boundaries and a wooden sign that says no fees. I can do that.”

”And the grain route?”

”Pushed to next year.” Meru finally looked up. His dark Nubian face held something Lu Zhu hadn’t seen there before — not mercantile sharpness. Something deeper. ”A man who fled an oppressed tribe in Nubia, spent fifteen years putting down roots in Egypt — he knows what refugees feel when they get turned away at someone else’s market gate. I can make sure they don’t get turned away anymore.”

Lu Zhu looked at him. Three months ago, this man had stood in a moldering granary, arguing freight costs for twenty thousand hekats of rotting barley. Now he sat at the edge of a market paved with scavenged gravel and palm fronds, logging every refugee stall’s daily transactions in his own invented notation. The transformation hadn’t happened on a battlefield. It had cured slowly, inside gravel firebreaks and charcoal lines on a wooden sign.

Meru abruptly looked up from his palm-paper, frowning.

”Wait.”

”What?”

”This morning’s transaction log — the left row of stalls. The grain-denominated numbers don’t match the physical goods. I mixed up two of the cracked-barley stalls — recorded one as three sacks and the other as one, but when I checked the at midday, the amounts were reversed.” He flipped the palm-paper over, muttering to himself. ”Didn’t sleep enough last night.”

He drew a fresh separator line on the paper, crossed out the two mixed-up entries, and re-entered them in the correct stall order. Then he stood, walked over to the two barley vendors, confirmed the morning’s volumes face-to-face, came back, and filled in the corrected figures.

Lu Zhu watched the entire sequence — spot the error, admit it, recheck the numbers, go to the source and verify in person, return and correct — and thought: if this man had been born in Lu Zhu’s previous era, he’d have become the kind of supply-chain director who drove auditors insane but earned every logistics manager’s undying respect. Not because his system was precise. Because he was willing to crouch in front of his own mistakes and count his way back out, one entry at a time.

Imset’s private medicine supply ran out entirely on the ninth day.

Not just the acacia gum — that had been gone since the battle’s first afternoon, and Shafi had been substituting charcoal styptic ever since. Now even the raw materials for charcoal — coconut shells, reed roots, dried palm bark — were nearly depleted. Imset himself had been running a low fever since the fourth day. Not an infection. Immune collapse after too many days without sleep. Shafi had forced him onto the cellar’s reed mat and was sponging his forehead with chamomile water. He said something, barely lucid.

”The third chest.”

”What?”

”Third chest — the left-hand one. There’s a Twelfth Dynasty medicinal garden siting map inside. Old desert oasis — abandoned mine pit. The bottom of the pit holds shade and cool air year-round. Good for growing chamomile and mugwort. If you can find that pit’s location, you won’t need to wait for Memphis resupply anymore.”

Shafi wrote this down on her own palm-paper — handwriting still crooked, but faster than before.

Lu Zhu went to the shrine cellar that night. Imset was still on the reed mat but the fever had broken. He saw Lu Zhu enter and didn’t speak. He just gestured toward the chests along the wall.

”The third chest — you’ve already opened it.”

”Only one sheet. The garden siting map.” Lu Zhu drew the sheepskin from the chest and spread it on the low table. ”This abandoned mine pit — roughly where?”

”Western desert edge. About a day’s walk from the Oasis Village.” Imset propped himself up. His voice was still thin, but the logic was fully intact. ”The star-sight symbols on this map — you should be able to read them by now. This line here — winter solstice sunrise. This one — Sirius rising. The pit sits at the intersection of the two sight-lines. Follow the map. You’ll find it.”

”When you’re recovered, you’ll take me.”

”I may not recover to that degree.” Imset said this without self-pity. Just a fact. ”I’m fifty-five. Five days without sleep plus a low fever — the recovery period will be longer than you think. Take the map. If you ever reach that pit — plant chamomile at the entrance for me. It’ll grow on its own. Abandoned mine pits in desert oases — the bottom holds shade. Chamomile likes that.”

Lu Zhu rolled the sheepskin and tucked it inside his robe. Then he sat down beside Imset’s low table and pulled something from the other side of his robe — a flatbread wrapped in palm leaf. Not the medicinal kind. Plain date-sweetened soft flatbread.

”Eat.”

”I’m not a casualty.”

”You’re not. But you’re my drawings supplier. If my supplier goes down, my technical foundation breaks.”

Imset took the bread. Tore off a small piece. Chewed. The corner of his mouth bent.

”Your recipe or Shafi’s?”

”Mine. But she added something — crushed fig seed sprinkled on top. She said your stomach’s been too weak for dates lately. Fig seed is gentler.”

Imset ate the bread slowly. Then he spread a blank sheet of palm-paper across the low table and began drawing, in charcoal, a structural diagram — a defensive shelter layout larger than the intake shelter, designed to hold fifty people independently. His fingers were still long and dry, his nails still trimmed with that ceremonial fastidiousness — even on the night his fever had just broken, the old high priest’s hands kept their discipline.

”You told me you were looking for an answer. Something connected to building.” Imset didn’t look up. His charcoal moved slowly but steadily across the paper. ”I’ve been in this cellar three years. I went through every drawing I have — wanted to see if anything might help you. The Third Dynasty star-alignment diagram marked three buildings with star-fixed foundations. But I found two more in the Fourth Dynasty irrigation engineering drawings — canal alignments marked with stellar sight-lines. That’s five known star-fixed buildings. The remaining seven — locations unknown.”

Lu Zhu said nothing. He looked at Imset’s face in the lamplight — thinner than it should be, worn translucent by fever and sleeplessness — and remembered an old engineer from his previous life. Retired. Donated all his construction logs to the company archive. Not because the company needed them. Because he believed they’d be useful to whoever came after. Imset was doing the same thing: he’d live to see the outside of this cellar, but he’d already gone through every drawing he owned, looking for something — anything — that might help a man displaced across three millennia find the answer he was searching for.

Not for repayment. Because he, too, wanted to know what the answer was.

The orphans began appearing in significant numbers on the eighth day.

Not one or two. Groups. After the Libyan cavalry struck the Oasis Village, children who’d lost their parents were initially taken in by relatives and neighbors. But as post-war grain grew scarcer, households that could barely feed their own children couldn’t sustain extra mouths. The children were brought, one by one, to the edges of the granary compound and the intake shelter — not abandoned. Left where someone would find them. The adults believed a place with a granary, a casualty shelter, a white-robed priest, and an old man who knew medicine was better than starving at home.

Nefer was the first to register what was happening. Her women erected a fifth shelter behind the intake yard — specifically for the unclaimed children. It now held seventeen of them. The oldest maybe thirteen. The youngest still nursing — left at the shelter entrance wrapped in a worn-out linen tunic, with a charcoal note pinned to the cloth: His mother died. I can’t raise him.

Lu Zhu crouched at the shelter entrance, looking at the seventeen children packed inside. They’d spread dried palm fronds over the gravel floor, shared a few torn linen scraps as blankets, and lay pressed together for warmth. No one was crying. Children this age finished crying on the road, before they arrived.

He spotted two familiar silhouettes.

One was Seb — crouched in the shelter’s farthest corner, holding his father’s half-full seed sack, counting the kernels one by one. He’d been doing this every night since his father died. Not to track the number. Because the sack was the only thing his father had left him.

The other was the skinny apprentice from the fish-pickling disaster — the youngest of Kamon’s crew, the one Kamon had left behind. He was leaning against the shelter’s stone wall, a chipped stone chisel on his knee, wiping the blade repeatedly with a scrap of worn linen. His master had taken the contract in Memphis and brought the three most experienced masons from what remained of the crew. He hadn’t brought this one. Not because the boy lacked skill. Because a luxury mansion site had no use for an apprentice this young. He’d been left on the West Bank. No master. No wages. He survived by hauling gravel for the shelter in exchange for porridge.

As Seb sat counting his seed, the skinny apprentice — Hapy — set down his chisel, stood, and walked over.

”You count that every night. Any missing?”

Seb looked up. ”...No.”

”Then why do you keep counting?”

”Because if I stop — I’m afraid I’ll forget what my father left me.”

Hapy was quiet for a moment. Then he crouched beside Seb, reached into the sack, and picked up a single kernel. Held it in his palm. Plump. Golden. No mold. An old farmer’s seed, preserved by traditional methods — better than anything in the state granary.

”I’m Hapy. I used to haul stone for Master Kamon’s crew.” He put the kernel back. ”My master left. Didn’t take me to Memphis. Can you teach me that gravel-sieving thing? The one you learned from Master Kamon — the finger-gap grade?”

Seb looked at him. ”You want to learn gravel barriers?”

”Not just that. I want to learn a trade.” Hapy’s voice was very quiet, but every word landed like a chisel-strike. ”While my master’s gone — I can’t just do nothing.”

The two boys crouched in the corner of the shelter, a sack of seed and a stone chisel between them, and began teaching each other. No one had arranged this. No ceremony. Seb taught Hapy how to sieve gravel to finger-gap grade — the technique Kamon had taught him. Hapy taught Seb how to use a stone chisel to trim mud-brick edges — something he’d picked up watching the senior masons at the quarry. Neither was proficient. Both taught badly. Neither stopped.

Lu Zhu crouched at the shelter entrance and watched the whole thing from beginning to end. He didn’t make a sound. He just filed a mental note: a quarry orphan named Hapy and a farmer’s orphan named Seb, teaching each other with no one to teach them. If there was ever an opportunity — he’d give each of them a workshop.

He stood, walked back to the granary, opened Imset’s defensive-shelter layout drawing, and added a line of charcoal at the margin: Need an apprentice training system. Teach them walls. Teach them shelters. Teach them grain pits. Not one person. One generation.

Nefer found another boy in the shelter’s corner — a skinny Nubian, alone in the shadows, barefoot, clutching half a lump of coarse barley bread so hard it could have chipped stone. He’d scavenged it from behind a market stall, wrapped it in a palm leaf, and was guarding it like something precious and fragile.

He was about the same age as Seb — fifteen, sixteen. Dark skin. Deep-set eyes. High-bridged nose. Nubian features like Meru’s, but his frame was smaller, and his eyes held a wariness that had nothing to do with age. He didn’t speak to anyone. Didn’t sleep inside the shelter. Every night he leaned against the gravel pile outside the intake shelter wall, using a palm frond as his only blanket.

Nefer tried handing him a bowl of hot barley porridge. He looked at the porridge for a long time. Then at Nefer for a long time. Then he took the bowl, drank it without lifting his head, and said nothing.

”What’s your name?” Nefer asked.

Long silence.

”...Kes.”

”You’re alone?”

”My clan scattered. When the Libyans came, I followed the crowd toward the Nile. Reached the river. There were no boats. I walked along the bank until I got here.”

”Your parents?”

Kes didn’t answer. He set the empty bowl gently on the ground, drew himself back against the gravel pile, and wrapped the palm frond tighter around his shoulders. The gesture wasn’t a child hiding. It was someone who’d lost everything, protecting himself with the only thing he had left.

Nefer picked up the bowl he’d drunk from, washed it clean, and set it upside down on a flat stone beside the gravel pile. She didn’t ask any more questions. She just left the bowl there.

The sixth morning. Kes appeared at the back corner of the granary compound. He was crouched beside a gravel pile, drawing something in the dirt with a piece of rusted copper wire.

Lu Zhu walked closer and saw what he was drawing: a building plan. Rough. Proportions off. Lines crooked. But the structural logic was complete — four posts forming a square, a circular surface at the center, gravel drainage channels radiating outward in rings, an outer perimeter wall marked with short hash-lines.

”What are you drawing?” Lu Zhu crouched beside him.

Kes didn’t look up. He used the copper wire to mark a point at the circle’s center, then spoke.

”My clan’s livestock pen. The circle in the middle is the water trough — in summer the animals drink around it. The gravel channels carry the splashed water out to the sand beyond the pen so the standing floor never turns to mud. The outer wall blocks the night wind from the desert.” He set the copper wire down and looked at Lu Zhu. ”My grandfather built that pen. When the Libyans burned our camp, the pen was the last structure standing. The water trough held the longest.”

Lu Zhu looked at the crude plan scratched into the dirt. This wasn’t an architect’s sketch. It was a fifteen-year-old who’d just lost his entire clan, using half a piece of rusted wire to draw the only building he still had.

”You know how to draw a building plan?” Lu Zhu asked.

”No. I’ve only ever seen this one. My clan had no priests. No literate builders. Only my grandfather knew how to build the pens. He said you don’t need to learn building — just look at the ground and build. But I don’t have ground anymore.”

Lu Zhu was quiet. Then he reached into his robe and pulled out a folded sheet of palm-paper — the reverse side of Imset’s garden siting map, blank — and handed it to Kes.

”Blank side. Use charcoal. Draw the plan you just scratched into the dirt. This time, not with copper wire. With charcoal.”

Kes’s hand trembled when he took the paper. Not from cold. From being given — for the first time in his life — a pen and a surface and permission to preserve the only thing he still carried.

He spent the rest of the morning on that sheet of palm-paper. Drew the full livestock-pen structure: trough, drainage channels, perimeter wall, posts. Proportions still off. Lines still crooked. But every node-relationship was clear. Beside the drainage channel, he wrote a few hieroglyphs in a rough, unpracticed hand — the word order carrying Nubian dialect patterns — but the meaning was correct: Water runs from high to low. Gravel filters sand. Must not clog.

Lu Zhu took the drawing, studied it, and wrote a line of charcoal on the reverse margin: Kes’s first architectural drawing — clan livestock pen. Nubian construction technique — trough drainage. Archive.

Kes saw the word ”Archive” and the trembling in his hands stopped. He looked down at the copper-wire sketch still on the dirt, then at the palm-paper version now in his hands. His throat moved. He didn’t speak.

He just folded the palm-paper carefully, placed it inside his only possession — a scavenged coarse-linen sack. The sack had previously contained half a lump of hard barley bread and a length of palm-fiber cord. Now it held a drawing. He didn’t say thank you. But the way he folded the paper was more deliberate than any thanks could have been.

Kamon returned to the West Bank on the afternoon of the eighth day.

He wasn’t riding his old donkey — Meru had borrowed it to haul spices and never returned it. He was on a chestnut horse issued by the viscount’s stables, the saddle fitted with copper household badges. He looked cleaner than he had in weeks — shaved, coarse tunic swapped for bleached linen, a new copper-hafted chisel in hand instead of the old dulled-iron one.

But his hands — those hands were still the same. Stone grit packed under every nail. Calluses thick as leather. Thirty years of masonry, and no bleached linen could hide them.

He dismounted and went to the intake shelter first. Nefer was replacing a rain-damaged reed mat on one of the refugee shelters. She saw Kamon arrive on a nobleman’s horse, wearing bleached linen, and her hands paused on the reed mat for a fraction of a second. Then she kept weaving.

”How’s the lotus carving?” She didn’t look up.

”Harder than mud-brick.” Kamon’s voice, saying these three words, was nothing like the man who’d kicked a reed basket at the granary gate three months ago. Not anger. Not despair. A dissonance he hadn’t yet recognized in himself. A mason who’d spent thirty years building on the West Bank, now riding a nobleman’s horse every morning to carve lotus petals for a viscount he’d never meet. Earning more money than ever. His tool pouch holding his son’s casualty slip and his family’s land confiscation notice — and a mansion blueprint covered in lotus and papyrus patterns.

”That viscount in Memphis — he’s expanding the estate.” Kamon crouched beside the shelter. His tone was detached, describing someone else’s problem. ”Bought a big tract of farmland east of the city. Planning to fold it all into the estate gardens. There were a few households on that land. Yesterday afternoon I watched his steward bring men to demolish a farmer’s mud-brick wall. That household had no deed — their ancestors settled that plot during the famine years before the pharaoh’s coronation. Never registered it. Under current law — the land belongs to the viscount.”

Kamon kept talking, and his hand kept working the copper chisel — not consciously. A mason’s hands, in conversation, will find a stone or a tool on their own.

”Were they driven out?” Nefer asked.

”They moved yesterday. When the wall came down, the old woman of that household knelt on the ground, pulling bricks out of the rubble with her bare hands. She wanted to salvage a few intact ones — her father had fired them. She was going to use them to build a cook-stove. She held the bricks against her chest, and I saw her fingers moving over the surface. Her father had pressed his fingerprints into the clay before firing. That’s what she was touching. Her father’s fingerprints.”

By the time Kamon finished saying this, the dissonance in his voice had become something deeper — a clarity still forming, not yet fully understood. He wasn’t fighting with himself. He was fighting with the version of himself that had accepted the viscount’s contract.

Nefer set down the reed mat and looked at him.

”Are you going back tomorrow? To carve?”

Kamon didn’t answer. He wiped the copper chisel clean, slid it into his tool pouch — next to the papyrus that was a cemetery — and was quiet for a long time.

”Still got a month and a half on the contract.”

”And after?”

”I don’t know.” Kamon stood and walked away from the shelter — not toward the intake yard, not toward the granary, not toward Memphis. A direction he hadn’t decided on yet.
