Nile Builder: The Architect from the East

Chapter 19: Chapter 9: The Envoy Arrives — The Temple Pressures the Guild

When the gods send messengers to a quarry, they do not come to negotiate. They come with sealed scrolls and three gray donkeys, and they give a village of stoneworkers one day to decide whether their craft belongs to them — or to the temple that has never once paid them for it.

Nekhem’s envoy arrives at the West Bank on the fourth day after the Merchant Alliance is founded.

The news comes first through one of Meru’s errand boys. He sprints from Thebes before the sun has burned the mist off the river, and by the time he finds Meru in the back courtyard of the official granary, he is bent over, gasping, the words tangling in his throat. The morning air still carries the river’s damp chill — that brief hour before the Egyptian sun turns every breath into a weight. What he manages to say is this: he has seen three men at the ferry crossing. They are not wearing the plain white robes of ordinary priests. Their robes are trimmed in blue — the blue border that only the High Priest’s personal heralds are permitted to wear in the Temple of Amun. Three men, each riding a gray donkey from the temple stables. Three donkeys, their backs laden with papyrus scrolls sealed with clay stamps.

”Three men — they’re not here to talk. They’re here to give orders.” Meru stands in the doorway of the quarry workshop, repeating the words twice. The half-eaten barley flatbread in his hand has gone cold — he has forgotten to finish it. The crust is stiff now, the grain texture rough against his palm. He is waiting for Kamon to return from the quarry.

Kamon is not at the workshop. He left at first light with Seb and Hapy, heading to the newly leveled residential plots on the eastern edge of the settlement. Tia’s labor-hour ledger, compiled days earlier, has flagged something: seventeen refugee families on the West Bank whose able-bodied adults have been conscripted without pay for so many seasons that they have never managed to build their own homes. Kamon intends to use guild manpower and the Alliance’s surplus materials to lay foundations for all seventeen — starting now, before the temple finds another way to take their labor.

He crouches at the edge of the foundation site, the morning sun already warm on the back of his neck, comparing rammed-earth thickness figures with Seb. The soil here is dark and crumbly, river-silt mixed with limestone grit; when he rubs a pinch between his fingers, it falls apart with the right dryness — good compaction material. Behind him, rapid footsteps crunch on the gravel. Hapy comes first, a palm frond clutched in his fist — the signal Meru’s men use when a message cannot wait.

”Uncle Meru says you need to come back to the workshop right now,” Hapy says. ”Men in blue-bordered robes — from Thebes.”

Kamon’s charcoal stick pauses. On the limestone slab where he has been sketching a foundation cross-section, the last annotation line has gone slightly crooked. A fraction of a finger’s width. He sets the charcoal down, rises, and dusts the sand from his knees — the grit clings to the coarse linen, and he has to slap at it twice before it lets go.

”Seb — finish copying the rammed-earth data,” he says. ”Hapy, go to the north side of the settlement and find Lu Zhu. Tell him the men from Thebes are here for me, and he should stay away until I’ve figured out what they want.”

Hapy turns and runs. Kamon glances at Seb — the boy has already picked up the charcoal and crouched back down over the crooked line. He does not look up. He only asks: ”Master — should I go clear the stone blocks from in front of the workshop?”

Kamon pauses, then understands. Seb is not offering to tidy up. He is asking whether to clear the field — to remove anything that might be used as a weapon, or anything an envoy might choose to interpret as a provocation. This fourteen-year-old boy, who before Lu Zhu took him in was nothing but a farmer’s orphan squatting on a field ridge sketching cellar diagrams in the dirt, has learned to read ”clear the stone blocks” as ”someone might be coming to break things.”

”Don’t clear anything,” Kamon says. ”Whatever’s stacked at the workshop door stays where it is. No matter who comes.”

By the time Kamon walks back to the quarry workshop, thirty or forty people have already gathered outside.

These are not refugees. These are stoneworkers. The old stonemason Papi stands at the very edge of the crowd, hands clasped behind his back, his face expressionless. He does not push forward. He just stands far back and watches, his stillness a kind of judgment. Old Amenhotep stands beside him, lips pressed into a thin line, a chunk of waste stone turning over and over in his palm — a piece his son brought home from the temple construction site yesterday, right after receiving notice that his labor was no longer required. The younger stoneworkers cluster closer to the front. Some still grip their chisels. Some have just run over from the foundation site, their coarse linen kilts coated in rammed-earth dust that puffs faintly with every shift of their weight.

The three envoys in blue-bordered white robes stand at the workshop entrance. Their donkeys are tied to the palm-wood posts out front, the reins knotted with ceremonial precision — not the quick-release hitch of men in a hurry, but the tight, formal wrap of men who do not intend to stay long and want you to know it.

The lead envoy is around fifty, gaunt, with high cheekbones and a clean-shaven jaw. He carries no scroll in his hands — which means the words he is about to speak require no evidence, no authority beyond his own presence. Behind him stand two lower-ranking priests, one to each side, each bearing an Amun ram’s-head emblem on his chest. Their gazes travel past the gathered craftsmen and settle on the gray stone slab propped at the workshop entrance.

On that slab are the five guild regulations Kamon wrote in charcoal five days ago. Beside it, on a wooden hook, hangs the palm-fiber measuring rope — the guild’s unified length standard. On the craft demonstration platform, three standardized stone chisels lie side by side, blades facing outward: samples of the guild’s unified tool specifications.

”You are Kamon?” The lead envoy’s voice is not loud, but it presses down — every word rolled out from the deep throat, like a millstone turning over grain.

Kamon stands beside the gray slab, his coarse linen kilt still smeared with rammed earth. ”I am.”

”Nekhem, High Priest of the Great Temple of Amun, issues this decree.” The envoy draws from his sleeve a small scroll of papyrus sealed with blue clay. He does not unroll it. He grips it — the way a man grips a blade he has not yet drawn. ”Effective immediately: any persons gathering craftsmen under the name ’Stonemasons’ Guild’ on the West Bank, setting wages without authorization, or privately transmitting craft techniques — all such persons shall be deemed to have violated the temple’s ancient artisan ordinances. The Temple of Amun shall permanently bar the aforementioned craftsmen and all associates from participation in any project under temple jurisdiction — including but not limited to temple repairs, official construction, and noble residences. Their families shall likewise be forbidden to tenant-farm on temple lands and forbidden to set up stalls in temple marketplaces.”

He pauses. His gaze shifts from Kamon’s face to the five lines of writing on the gray slab. The corner of his mouth moves — not a smile. It is the expression of a man watching an insect crawl over a threshold.

”Considering that this is merely the confusion of a few country craftsmen who do not know the rules — I will give you one day. Before this time tomorrow, smash this slab. Burn your registry. Disband your men. From now on, if the West Bank wants construction work, it will follow the old rules — apply for assignments at the temple works office, settle wages at temple rates, and remit offerings to the temple. Do this, and High Priest Nekhem will overlook your previous transgressions.”

A sharp intake of breath cuts through the crowd. A young stoneworker takes a step forward — and the man beside him seizes his sleeve. It is an older craftsman, and the grip is not objection; it is fear. Fear that the young man will become the first target. The young man whips his head around and glares. The look in his eyes is not anger. It is humiliation. The old craftsman says nothing, only clamps his hand down on the young man’s shoulder — hard, because he thinks the boy needs to be held back, needs a moment to cool down. But the young man’s shoulder pushes against that palm, straining forward — once, twice — and then stops. Not because he is restrained. Because he stops himself.

”Before this time tomorrow” — as those words leave the envoy’s mouth, men in the crowd begin silently calculating. Calculating whether their mothers’ market stalls sit on temple ground. Whether their brothers’ farmland is registered under temple land deeds. How much of their wives’ sandal-making earnings the temple takes in tribute. A middle-aged stoneworker with a thick beard stares down at his own hands, tracing circles on the seam of his kilt with one finger — he is not daydreaming. He is doing the math. His wife’s weaving stall in the temple market pays two parts in ten as tribute every month. Over a year, that is enough to buy half a donkey. If they are driven out, his wife’s skill remains — but where does skill go when the stall is gone?

”Three more days,” another craftsman mutters from the back, low, as if confirming something to himself. ”The stone stockpile can last three more days. After that, if the temple cuts off supply — the guild’s work sites stop.”

”Your pottery stall — isn’t that on temple ground too?” the man beside him asks.

”It is. But my wife pulled out the day before yesterday. She doesn’t want to pay the temple’s two-tenths tribute anymore. We’ll sell at the settlement market from now on. No tribute there —” He stops. ”— as long as the guild is still standing.”

”As long as the guild is still standing.” The words ripple through the crowd like a stone dropped into still water. Of the forty-odd people gathered outside this workshop, at least twenty have livelihoods — direct family stalls, farmland, tenant rights, apprentice qualifications — tied to temple territory. Every word the envoy utters is a hammer tapping at these vulnerabilities. This is not a question of loyalty. This is a question of where your wife sets up her stall tomorrow morning. Where your son goes to work. Whether your father can still plant his tenant field.

Kamon does not move. He stands in front of the gray slab, and beneath the coarse linen of his kilt, the line of his shoulders is pulled tight — not with nerves, but with the stillness of a chisel wedged into a rock seam, held at the threshold before the strike.

”The Stonemasons’ Guild does not take temple projects,” he says, every word striking like a chisel on stone. ”Nor noble ones. We take only common work — repairing homes, building granaries, raising walls, clearing drainage channels. We do not work for gods. We work for people.”

The envoy’s eyes narrow. He did not expect Kamon to cut straight through the logic of the ban — the temple’s blockade only works if the guild depends on temple projects, and Kamon has just told everyone present: the guild never planned to eat from the temple’s table in the first place.

”Not work for gods?” The envoy raises his voice just enough to ensure every craftsman hears. ”Who do you think owns this land on the West Bank? Who designated this quarry? The foundation under your stone stocks — who approved its allocation to stoneworkers all those years ago? The temple. Without the temple, you would not even have ground to stand on. And now you say you will not work for gods?”

At the back of the crowd, the old stonemason Pepi turns and walks away. He does not look back. Amenhotep follows him two steps, then stops — neither joining him nor returning to the crowd. He stands in the open space between the crowd and the quarry, like a post that cannot decide which direction to fall.

Kamon watches the two old craftsmen’s retreating backs. His voice does not rise. It does not quicken. ”The land the temple designated was the West Bank village’s communal quarry site — thirty years ago. When they drew those boundaries, the stoneworkers labored for the temple without pay for three full months. Over three hundred man-days of work. That was not charity. We earned it ourselves.”

In the crowd, heads begin to nod. Several of the old quarrymen exchange glances — they remember those three months. Those three months when the stoneworkers hauled blocks on the temple site from dawn to dusk, and only after dark could they come to the quarry to cut a few stones for their own homes. The skin on their palms had worn through, layer after layer of callus torn and regrown.

The envoy’s expression does not change. But his fingers tighten around the papyrus scroll — a tiny motion, and Lu Zhu, standing at the side of the crowd, catches it. Lu Zhu arrived sometime after Kamon’s third sentence. He has not pushed to the front. He simply leans against the workshop’s side wall of sunbaked mud-brick, the clay rough and warm through the back of his tunic. Hapy stands beside him, whispering a summary of everything that has happened so far. Lu Zhu listens without speaking, then shifts his gaze from the envoy’s face to the three gray donkeys tied to the posts. He is calculating. The round-trip distance from Thebes to the West Bank. The travel time. Every extra day the envoy spends here is one more day before Nekhem’s next order arrives. In his past life, he would have mapped this on a Gantt chart — logistics dependencies, lead times, buffer margins. Here, he traces the numbers in his head against the donkeys’ twitching ears, the dust on their fetlocks, the angle of the sun. Same math. Different tools.

”You say you will not work for gods — then what about your craftsmen’s families?” The envoy shifts his angle, his voice softening, as if he is speaking on the craftsmen’s behalf. ”Look at them. How many of them depend on temple market stalls for their daily bread? How many have their farmland registered under temple deeds? Today you declare you will not work for gods — and tomorrow their mothers lose their selling spots. Their brothers lose the right to plant. You get to feel righteous — and them?”

This is the killing strike. Not aimed at Kamon. Aimed at every person standing behind him.

Silence grips the space outside the workshop for several heartbeats. A middle-aged stoneworker glances back over his shoulder — his wife sells pottery in the temple market, two-tenths tribute to the temple every month. Another young craftsman’s grip on his chisel loosens — his father plants barley on a patch of temple wasteland; the tenant right was issued by the temple land registry.

The envoy sees the hesitation. For the first time, a trace of real satisfaction touches the corner of his mouth. ”I am giving you one day — not as a courtesy to you. As a courtesy to the people behind you. Let them think it over. Let them decide whether standing behind this gray slab — behind you — is worth it.”

He turns toward the donkeys. Halfway there, he stops — glances back, his eyes landing once more on the gray slab. It stands in the crushed-stone yard at the workshop entrance, five guild regulations scrawled across it in charcoal. No frame. No ornament. Just a slab of limestone driven straight into the mud.

”Ah — I nearly forgot.” He lifts the papyrus scroll and, this time, unrolls it before the crowd. ”Seeing as this matter deserves a proper conclusion — High Priest Nekhem has said he is willing to offer the Stonemasons’ Guild a way forward. All you need to do is change the five regulations on this slab into two. One: obey all temple artisan dispatches. Two: remit three-tenths of all guild income as temple artisan tax. Do this, and the Temple of Amun will not only refrain from banning your guild — it will assign all civilian housing repairs on the West Bank to you.”

He rolls up the scroll, his tone light, as though the deal is already settled. ”Two regulations. Three fewer than what you have now. Think it over.”

The silence outside the workshop is so complete that the wind threading through the palm grove from the Nile is audible — a dry rustle, like old reeds rubbing together. Several young craftsmen’s breathing turns heavy. Not because they are tempted. Because they are insulted. The five regulations they fought to write — publicly demanded to be reduced to two, and told to call it charity.

Papi — the young stoneworker who was first to sign the guild registry — takes a step forward. The chisel in his hand is clenched so tight his knuckles have gone bone-white.

”You —”

”Papi.”

Kamon says only his name. Not a shout. Not a command. The way he would call for a brick on a work site. But the weight inside that single word pins Papi in place.

Kamon turns around to face the stoneworkers behind him. He sees every expression — anger on some, fear on others, and on still others, the exhausted flicker between the two. The middle-aged craftsman whose wife sells at the temple market keeps his head down, eyes fixed on his own reed sandals. A quarry worker who fled Thebes stands nearby, his lips trembling as if fighting a private war inside his own skull. The afternoon heat presses down on all of them, a physical weight; sweat tracks through the limestone dust on their arms, carving pale lines through the gray.

”You — every single person standing behind this slab,” Kamon says, his voice not loud, but every word landing with the weight of a tamping hammer on packed earth, ”listen to what I have to say.”

He raises his hand — not toward a chisel. He takes down the palm-fiber measuring rope from the gray slab and lays it across the stone. The rope is the guild’s unified standard sample — every craftsman’s chisel, leveling rule, and plumb gauge is calibrated against this one cord.

”I twisted this rope myself from palm fiber. The rope itself is worth nothing. But every brick, every wall, every foundation measured against it — those dimensions do not shorten or lengthen depending on whether you believe in the temple. I stand behind this slab not to oppose anyone — I stand here so that every man who lays stone, whether he once labored for the temple or for common folk, sets his chisel to the same standard. So that no apprentice who has learned his craft is made to work a full year without wages. So that every conscripted laborer has his hours recorded, and someone to demand the wages he is owed.”

He sets the palm-fiber rope back on the slab.

”If any of you feel — that going back to the temple is safer — I will not stop you. The names on the registry may be withdrawn within three days. Cross off your name, and no one will trouble you. But if you stay — tomorrow, the day after, every workday after that — I will hold to the five regulations on this slab for your hours, your wages, your craft standards. Not one regulation more. Not one less.”

No one speaks.

The middle-aged craftsman whose wife sells at the temple market scrapes the sole of his sandal against the ground twice, then lifts his head and looks at the three donkeys. On their backs, the blue-sealed papyrus scrolls catch the sun and throw back a harsh, blinding glare. His lips move — a half-formed word that never makes it out. Then he crouches down and buries his face in his hands.

Pepi — the old stonemason who was the first to walk away — has returned. No one noticed when. He stands at the outermost edge of the crowd, a chisel held loosely in one hand. He does not move inward. He does not set the chisel down. He simply stands at the edge and watches Kamon’s back, watches the five lines of writing on the gray slab. He watches for a long time.

Then the envoy leaves.

The three donkeys pick their way down the gravel path toward the Nile ferry crossing, their hoofbeats shifting from sharp to muted, swallowed at last by the river wind. Before departing, the envoy offers one final sentence: ”One day. This time tomorrow, I will send someone to see the results.” He does not look back. The moment his blue-bordered white robe vanishes around the bend of the quarry road, someone in the crowd exhales — a long, shuddering breath. Not relief. Just the release of air held too long.

But the silence that settles over the workshop in the envoy’s absence is heavier than when he stood among them. Because no one speaks now — not because they have nothing to say, but because no one knows whom to say it to. Between old craftsman and old craftsman, a gap of half a step has opened. This morning, that half-step was the distance between guild brothers. Now it is the distance between a decision not yet made. The young craftsmen still grip their chisels, but when they look down at the blade, what they see is no longer the cutting edge — they see their families’ faces, being driven from the temple market.

On the left side of the crowd, Nakht — a quarryman who has worked these stone faces for twenty-three years — unties the palm-fiber measuring rope from his waist. It was issued on the day the guild was founded, one for him and one for Kamon, their calibrations identical. He rolls it up, neatly, and sets it on the tool platform at the workshop entrance. He does not throw it. He places it. The rope touches the wood with a soft clack of fiber on fiber. Then he turns and walks toward the village beyond the settlement. He leaves all his other tools behind — everything. As he goes, his lips move around a whispered phrase, but the wind carries it away before anyone can hear it. The dust his sandals kick up hangs in the air a long time before settling.

”Nakht.” Kamon’s voice reaches across from the gray slab — not loud, but it cuts through the hot afternoon breeze. ”Your wife’s weaving stall —”

Nakht stops. One step. He does not turn around. ”I will go home and talk to her.” Then he keeps walking.

Kamon does not follow. He stands where he is, opens the guild registry, and draws a line next to Nakht’s name with charcoal — not crossing it out. Just a line, from the left of the name to the right. The meaning of that line is something only he knows: this man did not want to leave. He was dragged away. Dragged by his wife’s market stall, by his son’s livelihood, by every family that has paid tribute to the temple market for over twenty years.

Then the old stonemason Taha steps out from the crowd.

Taha was the last person to sign the guild registry, six days ago. After signing, he said to Kamon: ”Stone is hard — life is harder. Let’s see if this works.” His face today is nothing like it was that day. That day, his hand shook as he signed, and the light in his eyes was bright. Today, his eyes are cold.

He walks to the front of the gray slab and stops. He does not look at Kamon. He looks at the ground — the crushed-stone yard where, this morning, the stoneworkers practiced the unified wall-laying technique. Their charcoal marks still grid the ground, square after square, like a game board.

”Kamon — you said you would not stop anyone who wants to leave. So I am leaving.”

It is as though someone has pulled every shred of sound from the air outside the workshop.

Taha lifts his head. The old scar at the corner of his eye — a chip of quarry stone that flew up years ago — gleams white in the sun. ”My son works in the temple land registry. My son-in-law is a carver at the Theban temple. My daughter-in-law and her sister-in-law sell reed sandals at the Theban market. Those rules you talk about — hours, wages, apprenticeships — they are right. But for an old bone like me, right and wrong do not matter. One word from the temple, and my whole family loses its rice bowl.”

He lifts his hand and sets his old pottery shard — the one he used to sign, his name and enrollment date carved into the clay — down in front of the gray slab. He does not throw it. He places it. Very gently. Then he picks up the standardized stone chisel from the gray slab — the one he personally laid on the demonstration platform on the day he joined.

”This chisel — I forged the blade myself. It is not guild property. I am taking it with me.”

He turns and leaves.

Papi’s apprentice Kenti follows him out. Then Amenhotep — his son’s livelihood. Then Zat — the quarry foreman who measures the stone blocks. Then Zaid — a young stoneworker who fled Thebes; his sister works as a servant in a temple noble’s household. One after another, they walk from the workshop entrance onto the dirt road beyond the quarry, like a line of water droplets seeping along a stone crack. No one shoves. No one argues. Those who leave take their pottery shards from in front of the gray slab — some lift them gently, some stuff them straight into their sleeves without a backward glance. Not all are old stoneworkers — several are young, and one is a middle-aged carpenter who signed the registry just yesterday. As he passes Kamon, he says, ”I’m sorry.” Kamon nods to him once.

Papi stands rooted in place, both hands clenched into fists, his nails biting into his palms. His lips are trembling — not with fear. It is because after Taha leaves, he sees three or four more people begin to shift their feet outward. He opens his mouth to say something, but his throat feels packed with coarse river sand.

”Papi.” Kamon does not turn his head to look at him. ”Don’t shout.”

The ones who are leaving keep walking.

Lu Zhu leans against the workshop’s mud-brick side wall and has not moved from that spot. From his angle, he can see every departing face — not hatred, not contempt. Helplessness. These people were never persuaded by the envoy. They never believed a single word from that blue-bordered robe. But they have wives, children, relatives who scratch out a living on temple ground. Belief can be chosen. Livelihood cannot. Lu Zhu pushes himself off the wall, crouches down, and writes a few characters in the dirt with his finger — just a handful. Hapy leans over to look. He cannot read them. They are the script of Lu Zhu’s former world. He stares at the marks for a moment, then swipes his palm across them, erasing them. Rising, he brushes the sand from his hands.

”Go tell Meru — I need a count. How many Merchant Alliance members have stalls, storage, or transport routes that depend on temple territory. Report to me by tonight.”

Hapy runs.

After the crowd disperses, the crushed-stone yard outside the workshop is scattered with pottery shards. Every shard bears a name — some carved neatly, some scrawled, and beside some, a fingerprint pressed into the clay. Those prints are bleached pale now by the afternoon sun, the carved grooves packed tight with crushed limestone dust from the quarry floor. Papi and Sobek crouch in the yard, picking up the shards one by one.

”Whose is this?” Sobek holds up a shard with a chipped edge — a crooked name scratched into it.

Papi takes it and reads it. ”Zat’s. He used this same mark on his own chisels — remember? The same pattern on his chisel handles.”

”He’s gone.”

”I know.” Papi sets the shard down at the base of the gray slab — not back in the row, but off to one side, separate. Nearby lie several others: Zaid’s. The middle-aged carpenter who signed yesterday. Two newly arrived young craftsmen whose names Papi cannot even recall. He does not count them. But one sweep of his eyes tells him how many are missing.

”Nakht’s measuring rope is still on the tool platform.” Sobek glances toward the workshop entrance. The palm-fiber rope lies there, coiled neatly — the only thing Nakht left behind. Its calibrations match the guild standard perfectly, identical to the one in Papi’s hand.

Papi walks over, picks up the rope, and winds it around his own arm. He says nothing. He only winds it tight — tight enough that the palm fibers bite into the skin of his forearm. Then he walks back to the gray slab and sets it at the top, side by side with Kamon’s rope.

”The rope is still here. He’ll come back.”

Sobek looks at Papi’s face. His eyes are red-rimmed — but he is not crying. He simply places Nakht’s rope alongside Kamon’s, aligning the ends, matching the calibrations. The two ropes’ markings line up exactly. He stands, slaps the limestone dust from his knees, and then remains there in front of the slab, as though waiting for tomorrow’s dawn.

The young craftsmen who did not leave pottery shards — their names are still in the registry. But their silence disturbs more than any departure. They are waiting. Waiting for the envoy’s men to come back tomorrow and look at this slab one more time. If it still stands then, they will stay. If it does not, they will never return to this quarry. What keeps this measuring rope upright until tomorrow is not brute strength — it is the handful of shards still lying at the slab’s base, and the pattern of palm fibers pressed into Papi’s arm.

Kamon walks to the front of the slab, bends down, and picks up the abandoned shards. Taha’s — he took his chisel, but left his shard. Kenti’s — Papi’s apprentice. He stacks them neatly in a row at the foot of the gray slab. Then he straightens, takes the charcoal stick from his tool pouch, and strikes through the names of the departed in the registry. Each stroke of the charcoal leaves a fine, dense trail across the papyrus. He does not speed up or slow down. Every line is drawn in one motion, end to end — the way he lays a brick: press once, and only once.

Lu Zhu walks over to him. Kamon does not look up. ”Fifty men,” he says. ”Twelve remain.”

”Twelve is enough to keep this slab standing,” Lu Zhu says.

Kamon strikes through the last name and sets the charcoal down on the slab. He turns, leans his back against the gray stone, and exhales — a long breath wrung from the bottom of his chest, the way a man finally loosens the rope from his shoulders after carrying stone all day. The stone behind him holds the day’s stored heat, seeping through his tunic into his spine.

”My father had his leg broken by a conscription officer — after he came home, he could only do odd jobs at the quarry. Never picked up a chisel again. Because of that, he spent his whole life telling me not to get involved with officials. Don’t stand out. Don’t stick your neck up. Before today — I kept wondering, if my father were still alive, what he would think of all this. He would tell me not to stand out.”

A few seconds of silence. The evening insects are beginning their first tentative chirps from the palm grove.

”Then I remembered — he cannot tell me anything anymore. He is gone. The last thing he said to me before he left was: ’Lay your bricks well.’” Kamon pauses. ”He didn’t say ’follow orders well.’ He didn’t say ’hide well.’ Lay your bricks well.”

He rests his head against the gray slab and closes his eyes. Papi stands nearby, looking at that back — thirty years of stonemason’s labor written into the spine. The hump is not obvious, but there is a muscle between the shoulder blades that has been tensed for decades, carved into that shape by years of hoisting stone blocks. Right now, that muscle has finally loosened, just a fraction. ”As long as the chisel’s still here.”

The sun sinks below the palm grove. From the direction of the settlement, a few thin ribbons of cooking smoke rise into the cooling air — Nefer is in the communal kitchen, preparing the evening meal for those who remain. On the quarry face, the last light of day falls across the weathered chisel marks — marks not laid down in a single day. Three generations of stoneworkers. Thirty years. Thousands of chisels driven into that cliff face. The sunlight moves across the marks slowly, like a hand tracing the lines of an old stonemason’s palm. Every groove is one day of a stoneworker’s life. Those lives were traded for temple walls, for noble columns, for the pharaoh’s statues — never for their own wages. Now there is a gray slab standing on this quarry floor, and on it is written: your hours will be recorded. Your wages will be paid. Your craft will not be taken for nothing.

But these truths cannot hold back tomorrow’s reality. Whether the quarry gates will still open to them at dawn depends on whether the blue-bordered robe who climbed onto his donkey this afternoon changes his mind on the road back to Thebes. The stoneworkers can only wait. Wait and see whether, after tomorrow’s sunrise, the slab will still be standing.

That evening, in the back courtyard of the official granary, Meru gives Lu Zhu a number. Of the seven merchant houses signed to the Alliance, three have warehouse leases registered under temple land deeds — meaning that if Nekhem orders a blockade of the Alliance, those three houses’ entire goods inventory could be seized at any moment. The other four operate from private plots or West Bank village communal land, outside the temple’s immediate reach for now. Building material gaps — lapis lazuli, high-grade lime, water-resistant hardwood — are unsolvable in the short term. But basic materials — rough stone blocks, common lime, mud-brick clay — will hold for a month and a half.

Lu Zhu listens, then draws a table on a sheet of palm paper. The left column: material categories. The middle: days of stock remaining. The right: alternatives. The row for water-resistant hardwood sits empty in the alternatives column — and here he taps a series of ink dots, dense at first and then tapering off, as if conducting a silent calculation on the page. The ink bleeds slightly into the fiber, each dot a small surrender to the limits of this world’s supply chains. He thinks, absently, of the waterproof sealants he once specified in another life — polymer blends, epoxy resins, materials that would be as alien to this riverbank as a starship. He blinks the thought away.

”The waterproof clay — don’t even think about it. Someone’s already choked off the quality supply,” Meru says. ”But people aren’t the only thing Kamon lost today.”

”No.”

”Of the twelve left — how many will really stay with you to the end?”

Kamon walks in from the quarry. He does not answer Meru’s question. Instead, he sets an object down on the worktable — a stone chisel. The blade bears fresh grinding marks. The handle is carved with a crooked symbol.

”Taha took his chisel when he left,” Kamon says. ”This one — his apprentice put it on the craft platform. He said Taha took the chisel home, sat facing it for two full hours, then handed him this new one and told him to bring it back to the workshop tomorrow. Tell Master Kamon — stone is hard. The chisel cannot break.”

Outside the workshop, a crescent moon hangs over the quarry. The gray slab still stands. The five regulations have been dampened along their edges by the night dew, but the writing remains. At the slab’s base lie seven pottery shards — the ones left behind by those who walked away, and never picked up by those who stayed. The palm-fiber measuring rope rests across the slab’s center; moonlight catches every strand, turning the fibers into fine, dense threads of white.

Seb and Hapy crouch on the perimeter wall for night watch. The night air has turned cool, carrying the mineral scent of the quarry — dry stone and old dust. Seb sketches on palm paper, charting the day’s progress reinforcing the wall battlements — the eastern section, per Lu Zhu’s earlier flagged weak points, has been thickened from two and a half cubits to three. Hapy sits at the base of the wall, reviewing today’s stone inventory ledger, using charcoal to fill in the grain-size notation for a batch of edge chippings. Each works on his own task. Occasionally, they exchange a sentence.

”Those people who left today — will they ever come back?” Hapy asks.

Seb flips his palm paper over. ”After my father was conscripted, there was a boy my age in the next village. His father was taken too. His mother took him and fled. Before he left, he said to me: ’Don’t worry, I won’t leave.’ When I woke up the next morning, his family’s hut was empty.”

Hapy is silent for a while. He does not say ”I won’t leave.” He simply traces the grain-size notation with his charcoal stick again — harder this time, every number pressed into the stone surface. Then he stands, pulls the palm-fiber measuring line from the top of the wall, and drops a vertical — exactly the way Seb did the first time they drew the wall plan. The moonlight stretches the line into a long shadow, running from the parapet all the way down to the rubble pile, like an ink line without end.

”My father got his foot crushed by a stone block in the quarry — I was five years old that year. He lay there for three days. The quarry overseer came once. He said: ’Your family still owes three days’ stone quota.’ Then he left.” Hapy sets the charcoal down. ”Before my father died, he told me — don’t become a stoneworker.”

Seb looks at him.

”But I did it anyway.” Hapy’s voice is steady. ”Not because I wanted to. Because his sieve — the one he used in the quarry — it is still sitting in the corner of our house. I walk past it every day. It is the only thing he left me.” He coils the palm-fiber measuring line and winds it around his arm — the same motion Papi used on Nakht’s rope at the workshop entrance. ”I am not leaving. Not because I believe this slab can beat the temple. Because I know — if I leave, and someday my son asks me about this, I will not have a single word to answer him. I cannot tell him: ’Yes. Your father stood in that crowd, and then turned and walked away, because he was afraid of losing his livelihood.’ I cannot let him hear those words.”

Seb turns to the next page of his wall plan. He does not comment on Hapy’s words. He simply writes a notation along the drawing’s margin, in his characteristically precise hand: ”Wall emergency-joint blocks — eastern face, thinnest point, add two fingers’ thickness. Mortar to full density, no gap-filling.” Then he hands the sheet over to Hapy. ”Tomorrow, help me check the battlement slope dimensions. If this measurement is wrong —”

”A climber finds a foothold.” Hapy takes the sheet and runs his eye along the slope angle Seb has annotated, nodding through each mark. Their exchanges are about fortifications, about craft — and about nothing that resembles fear. With professional instinct, they output precision after precision, buttressing themselves at the center of the night.

The next day at noon, the two gray-robed junior priests appear at the quarry exactly as promised.

Inside the workshop, twelve stoneworkers stand — every last one of them, not a man missing. They grip their chisels and flank the gray slab on both sides. No one speaks. They simply watch in silence. The five regulations on the slab have been dampened along their edges by the morning dew, but not a single stroke of the writing has been touched. The midday heat shimmers off the crushed stone, and the smell of sun-baked limestone fills the air.

The lead priest’s face is ashen. He circles the slab twice. In the end, he does not dare raise a hand to smash it — he knows that if it comes to blows, twelve stoneworkers with pent-up fury can throw the two of them into the Nile to feed the fish. He only darkens his face further and spits out: ”You do not know what is good for you. Wait for Lord Nekhem’s judgment.” Then he takes his man and slinks away.

The quarry does not see the expected violence. Instead, it sinks into an even longer silence. Everyone understands — the real killing blow will not come in the open.

Two forces strain against each other in the West Bank’s dark night. And Nekhem’s envoy reaches Thebes that very evening after departing the West Bank. On the third night, deep in a side chamber of the Great Temple of Amun, a secret edict sealed with blue clay is pressed onto a desk by a steward’s hand. Fast horses leave that same night, galloping down the Nile’s official road straight for every West Bank quarry. — ”Effective immediately: not a single grain of stone from any official West Bank quarry shall be transported to the Stonemasons’ Guild’s material yard.”

The old priest’s brush makes one stroke. No one knows how much longer those twelve men can stand, once the stone supply runs dry tomorrow.
