High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1894: Chapter 115: Not Quite the Right Answer

The classroom was silent.

All the students anxiously watched the professor on the podium, whose face remained calm and voice steady. They were uneasy because his remarks did not align with the official statements of the Alliance, uneasy at hearing the word ’failure’ from the professor’s mouth.

For the students of the First University, who always believed ’Heaven is first, school is second,’ this was like a sudden blow. Although it wasn’t a ’huge blow,’ it was clear that the jarring word put them in a very bad mood.

Unlike these young wizards, the professor maintained an impressive calmness and objectivity throughout:

”...Of course, here, I will not use the word ’humiliation’ to describe the outcome of this war, because an ’irrepressible force’ emerged in this war.”

”The allied commander of the demon side, Sea Demon King Xiang Liu, unexpectedly broke through during a confrontation with Vice Principal Shi Hui, ascending to become an Ancient One, equivalent to our ancient wizard.”

”You should know that high-level existences exert a powerful suppression on low-level existences, so you should also understand why the demons were able to retreat entirely in the end.”

”In that war, the wizards had no equivalent tier existence to resist the ascended Sea Demon King... Fortunately, the demon king was very wise and only took away some close subordinates without wantonly slaughtering the ordinary wizards on the battlefield.”

”After saying so much, the main point is also here.”

”The ascension of the Sea Demon King inspired, or rather, ushered in a huge magic tide—a tide that happened in the Black Prison World as part of a larger magic tide—which deeply revitalized the originally exhausted Black Prison World from the inside out.”

”This revitalization has continued to this day and hasn’t concluded, and in the foreseeable future, it might continue for a long time.”

”You can understand it as a ’rebirth’ or ’ascension’ of the Black Prison World.”

”Before the ascension, the Black Prison World was near death. This is why wizards chose it as a prison to hold demon prisoners. In a world near death, lacking magic and spiritual machines, prisoners naturally had an inescapable shackle added to them, which could save a lot of school’s expenses, a lot.”

”Back to the initial question.”

”Previously, a student wanted to ask why you saw a sun, moon, or stars in the Black Prison. That’s because after the ascension, the Black Prison World experienced magic resurgence; new spiritual machines, new lives, including a new sun, are rapidly recovering.”

”This is also why you didn’t feel much difference between that world and the ordinary world when you entered the trials... But if you observe carefully, you’ll find that the sun in the Black Prison World is in a state between virtual and real, a very rare phenomenon.”

”During this period, everything birthed in the Black Prison World, whether magic plants or magic animals, or other magic materials, is inherently flawed, different from those born in a stable magic environment. This flaw is hard for ordinary wizards to discern, only to be discovered when used, that their effectiveness might be slightly lacking... This is also why the school’s purchase prices for your catches are lower.”

With that, the professor concluded his explanation of the Black Prison War.

Zheng Qing noticed that the professor did not mention many details of the war—for example, how the Dark Beast broke through to invade the Black Prison World, which wizards from the school participated in the great war, the battle of the sun in the sky, or how the Black Prison Castle finally collapsed, etc.

Furthermore, compared to what he remembered Mr. analyzed about the Black Prison War, Zheng Qing noticed that Professor Yao very skillfully avoided many sensitive topics, like the Xuanhuang Fruit, the hardline wizards, the new generation of wizards, the Alliance’s compromises, the Dark Council’s interference, etc., even speaking vaguely about the few legends involved in this war.

Leaving out the above messy details actually made this battlefield sound more ’clean,’ more ’simple,’ more like the version of the war between justice and evil that the public often hears.

Thinking of this, the young cost student pondered and turned back subconsciously to take a glance at Xiao Xiao.

He suddenly remembered the words Sima Yangyun said to them in the first magic history class last semester—history is unknown, true history cannot be simply summarized in a few words, only through using magic to study can one glimpse the part of history that once truly happened in the world.

Seeing the young cost student’s gaze, Xiao Xiao thought he wanted to cause trouble again over the previous issue of tattling and immediately raised the turtle shell in his arms nimbly, reminding: ”Old Yao is still up there... do you want to eat his chalk dust?”

Zheng Qing came to his senses, silently cursed the absolution diviner, and turned his head back to the podium.

On the podium, little sprites in gray uniforms carried warm tea to the professor in front. Old Yao took the cup, drank it all in one go, sighed comfortably, and concluded:

”This is how it went down, and this is the situation... So don’t go looking for trouble with the school works committee because of the low purchase prices, they have a lot of trouble right now, having them willingly collect your hunting gains is already good enough.”

There came a scattered, low laughter from below the stage.

However, amidst the laughter, a dozen or so arms of varying thickness reached upward, like bamboo shoots freshly unearthed, trying hard to catch the professor’s attention on the podium.

”This isn’t a class, it’s a class meeting now.”

Old Yao bit his pipe reluctantly, gesturing for everyone to lower their arms: ”Whatever questions, ask directly. If I can speak, I will, if I don’t have time, I won’t.”

”Professor, why was the Black Prison dying before?” a student curiously asked.

Old Yao did not shy away from this question: ”Because of the wizards’ greed... We excavated all the mines we could, plundered all the resources we could. When the world’s spiritual machines were completely taken, it naturally began to die slowly.”

This answer caused a slight embarrassment.

Just like when Old Yao mentioned the word ’failure’ before, it gave a somewhat ’incorrect’ feeling.

After a moment of silence in the classroom, student Li Meng leaned forward and quietly asked: ”Professor, without light, how did the prisoners in the Black Prison see others before? What did they eat?”

The little witch’s focus was always so unique and direct.

”Just like how cats can see in the dark, after staying in darkness for a long time, they naturally adapt to the environment there. As for food... they would eat everything that’s edible.”
