High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1888: Chapter 109: Lin Yan’s Reasoning

”I understand the reason.”

”But what’s that got to do with you buying his hunting team?”

The round-faced warlock listened to Lin Yan’s summary and was somewhat unconvinced. He habitually rubbed his bald head and sneered, ”...Do you really think that after we buy Absolution’s hunting team, we can remove the thorn from Mr. Sepulano’s heart and make him look up to us?”

”It was just a try anyway. Success would be delightful, failure also has its benefits.”

The warlock in a white robe shrugged lightly and said casually, ”If successful, we can show our strength to Alpha’s veterans, take the opportunity to expel those Jiuyou Hunters by disbanding the hunting team, make Alpha happy, and help us establish ourselves quickly... You know, a hunting team that has won the freshman championship and has the chance to participate in the official hunting competition cannot just be measured by jade coins.”

”You’re an Alpha, wanting to please Alpha folks is understandable.” The round-faced warlock curled his lips and pointed to himself and his companion, ”But we are from Starry Sky, this is no benefit to us.”

”Moreover, if we had bought Absolution, it might have surprised people, but you were just rejected, weren’t you?” The horse-faced warlock spoke gloomily again, repeating the earlier plan, ”...It would be better to just do as I suggested before, put a sack over his head at night, drag him into the forest, and knock him out!”

These two fools!

The white-robed warlock cursed inwardly but had to explain patiently, lest the two idiots really went and assaulted someone. If it succeeded, so be it, but if things went south, even if he had no involvement, he’d still face major disciplinary action for instigating it.

”As I said, even failure has benefits.”

Lin Yan paused deliberately here, glanced around with an enigmatic gaze, and whispered, ”There’s an old saying, the furthest distance in this world is between two people without any relationship... As long as there’s a relationship, the distance won’t be too far. So this result is actually beneficial to us.”

”How so?” The round-faced warlock timely asked the teaser.

”You’re full of nonsense.” The horse-faced warlock appeared slightly impatient.

Lin Yan showed no displeasure, explaining softly, ”Just like us and Mr. Sepulano. If I really took out seventy jade coins, maybe I could gain his favor. But how could a bought relationship compare to shared anger against the same person after being bullied?”

The round-faced warlock raised his eyebrows immediately, making his whole face stretch and appear much larger: ”Such a... unbelievable perspective.”

For a student from Starry Sky Academy, saying something like this was already quite euphemistic.

Compared to him, the horse-faced warlock was clearly uncomfortable with Lin Yan’s answer, awkwardly changing the subject: ”Earlier you said Zheng Qing was a troublemaker... what else has he done?”

”Hey, I’m not sure about the rest, but I do know he caused big trouble before the summer break.” Lin Yan sneered repeatedly, ”Remember I told you he participated in the Black Prison battle?”

His two companions nodded continuously, like little chicks pecking at grains.

”My cousin’s second brother-in-law’s family has a direct cousin who also participated in that battle.”

Lin Yan felt no awkwardness in his convoluted words, speaking fluently as he clearly had bragged about this to others before: ”She said that on the battlefield, a student from Jiuyou Academy provoked a legendary bronze dragon and ended up crashing into the walls of the Black Prison Castle... According to many descriptions, that student was Zheng Qing.”

”Was the wall crashed by Zheng Qing or by the dragon?” The round-faced warlock felt he finally caught up with his companion’s pace, but immediately got confused again: ”Zheng Qing could crash the Black Prison walls?”

The rhetorical question immediately stumped the storyteller.

If he admits the dragon did it, then the ’troublemaker’ label he put on Zheng Qing would be somewhat unjustified because on a battlefield, spells go astray and being chased around by a dragon accidentally leading to killing a wall isn’t huge trouble. On the contrary, having the courage to tussle with a legendary dragon on such a battlefield is already considered ’legendary story’ for those just entering the First University.

But if he denies the dragon crashed the wall and firmly insists Zheng Qing did, wouldn’t that imply Zheng Qing’s magic power was stronger than all those terrifying demons on the battlefield, capable of breaking a wall they couldn’t? Such logic instead makes Zheng Qing’s ’legendary’ aura all the more intense.

Lin Yan liked neither of these arguments.

He couldn’t help but be a bit annoyed he didn’t ask his cousin about it more clearly—of course, he highly doubted his cousin knew it clearly either—ending up in the current awkward situation.

”That’s beside the point!”

The white-robed wizard interrupted the round-faced warlock’s rebuttal, showing a hint of frustration: ”The point is Zheng Qing caused huge trouble on the Black Prison battlefield, so the entire summer he was held by the school, locked in the school hospital... I heard the school regularly fed him truth serum and used mind-reading spells, trying to determine if he was a demon spy.”

”Didn’t seem like he suffered any torture just now.”

The horse-faced warlock blew air upwards, letting the strands of long hair on his forehead flutter: ”...But on another note, I am indeed interested in this Absolution hunting team now.”

...

...

Zheng Qing had no idea what speculations people made behind his back.

He was solely focused on asking Su Shijun to sever the rebellious shadow under his feet. However, he couldn’t even accomplish this small wish.

Because the owner of the Two-Dimensional Evolution Lab—Su Shijun, Upper House Member of the Moon Council—was not in the office due to an urgent matter and had returned to Qingqiu; reportedly, he wouldn’t be at school for the next few days.

Thankfully, Su Man, the head housemaid left in charge of the lab, was familiar with Zheng Qing, confirmed Su Shijun’s schedule for him, and repeatedly assured it would be no problem by next Saturday.

Only then did the young cost student reluctantly return to the academy.

Before leaving, Zheng Qing also asked Su Man to check if the Institute of Applied Magic had any research involving two-headed ogres recently, which the head maid very seriously noted down.

When Zheng Qing returned to the library, the hunters of the Absolution hunting team were already aware of the small scuffle that occurred in the morning by the lakeside of Lin Zhong Lake. Tens of paper cranes flew toward Zheng Qing, circled around him, eagerly pecking at the warlock.

They made no sound but hurt terribly!

Zheng Qing had no choice but to cover his head with one hand while catching them with the other, pressing them onto the table one by one, unfolding, reading, and replying to them.
