High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1868: Chapter 89: The New Scholarship Students

With this little interlude, the initially tense atmosphere in the classroom relaxed considerably.

The nervousness of meeting the Legendary Boss quickly faded, and many people soon regained the feeling they had when communicating with the professor last semester.

”Professor, did you... have you really been promoted to Legend?”

”The promotion is not over yet, I’m still working on it.” Professor Yao put the pipe back in his mouth, and humorously replied, ”So you don’t have to switch to ’you’ formally; I’m fine with you using the informal ’you’ like before.”

The classroom instantly burst into laughter.

”So, Old Yao, what does it feel like to become a Legend?”

”Uh...”

Professor Yao puffed on his pipe, took a deep breath, then exhaled slowly, showing a slightly troubled look: ”It’s not that I can’t explain, but it would be like telling a mayfly about the cycle of the sun and moon or to the summer insect about winter snow and frost. Even if I described my experience in detail, you wouldn’t understand, and it might hinder your future choices, causing a kind of ’Cognitive Obstructions.’”

”Then don’t say it!” a classmate immediately shouted in objection.

”Yeah, yeah, I want to become a Big Wizard too!” others chimed in enthusiastically.

Old Yao smiled and raised his hand slightly, quieting the noise in the classroom: ”A teacher’s role is to impart Dao, communicate knowledge, and dispel doubts. While it’s hard to explain in detail, I can give an example... It feels like when I used to project myself here to teach, it looked real, but I felt hollow inside, clearly sensing the projection’s unrealness. But now, even a projection feels real and solid.”

He then raised his arm, shook his wide robe sleeve, as if trying to prove something. But no one, including Zheng Qing, could see anything, and they could only express their awe with an ignorant yet respectful gaze.

Only Li Meng seemed eager, half-standing up, leaning towards the table, as if wanting to grab the sleeve of the Legendary Wizard across the narrow aisle.

Jiang Yu decisively grabbed the back of her collar.

Professor Yao warmly smiled at the Little Witch and then looked at the other classmates: ”Alright, there will be plenty of time for chit-chat later. You’ve all just returned from trials today, probably tired and with many insights. We won’t take up too much time with this class meeting today so as not to affect tomorrow’s school start.”

”First, regarding the trial before this school start, the final summary work will be uniformly submitted by the School Works Committee. You have one week to complete your individual trial reports, which will be collected by the Monitor during next Sunday’s regular meeting...”

The classroom instantly filled with groans.

Everyone quite enjoyed the trials, treating them like school-organized hunts; but writing reports—no one liked that. Especially reports with a specified format and theme, which were torturous to write.

Old Yao ignored the complaints of the Young Wizards and raised his voice slightly: ”Second item, the selection of the Monitor. Last academic year, when selecting the Monitor, you were not very familiar with each other, so we used divination to acknowledge the future choice... This time, you have ample time to vote and choose the person you think is more suitable...”

”Why bother voting? Tang Dun and Jiang Yu did just fine!” Being a supporter of Tang Dun, Duan Xiao Jian immediately encouraged loudly, prompting others to chime in.

Even Zheng Qing nodded slightly, subconsciously agreeing with their opinion.

”That’s true, but procedures must be followed.” Professor Yao bit on his pipe, smiling and glancing around: ”Of course, while adhering to procedures, we can speed things up a bit, like omitting the campaign speeches... Is anyone volunteering to serve as the Monitor for Astronomy Class 08-1?”

The classroom went quiet, Tang Dun and Jiang Yu stared straight at the blackboard, while others glanced around silently, seemingly looking to see who would have the courage.

Nearly a minute passed, and no one spoke up.

It’s not that no one had the courage, but for one, the previous two Monitors did a good job, few thought they could do better; on the other hand, being a Monitor offers some bonus practice points, but also takes up a lot of energy, impacting daily studies.

For the students of Jiuyou Academy, who focused on exams, this impact was quite concerning.

”Since no one is volunteering, we will go directly to the vote.”

Professor Yao showed a look of unsurprise, patted the lecture table, and a stack of light blue mulberry paper floated into the air, paused for a moment, then flew like snowflakes towards the students: ”This is an anonymous vote, write down the name of the Monitor you choose on it. Just like last semester, there will still be two Monitors, one responsible for the boys, one for the girls.”

Zheng Qing looked at the thin paper floating before him, raised a hand, and it automatically landed in front of him. The smooth, light blue paper was just palm-sized, enough for two names.

Zheng Qing looked up, glanced around, and saw many people already grabbing pens and writing quickly.

”While you’re choosing the Monitor, let me announce the scholarship list for this academic year.”

Standing on the platform, Professor Yao didn’t waste a second and used this brief interval to joyfully declare: ”The students awarded Jiuyou Academy 2009 scholarships are — Liu Fei Fei, Jiang Yu, and Zheng Qing. Everyone can applaud and encourage these three students. The report cards will be distributed shortly. Anyone with questions about their scores can appeal to the school afterwards...”

The classroom erupted, nearly everyone turned to look at Zheng Qing, and the Xiao Xiao beside him.

”What?” Zheng Qing lifted his head blankly.

He hadn’t finished writing the names of the two Monitors, his mind was still mostly occupied with thoughts about the paper mouse he had sent out, completely ignoring what Old Yao was saying on the podium.

He was very sure that mouse crawled up the hem of a certain Witch’s robe, and she definitely had unfolded the letter. Yet, she showed no reaction, not even returning the mouse.

”You’ve become a scholarship student!” Xin Fat Man enviously turned back and firmly patted Zheng Qing’s shoulder: ”I thought Xiao Xiao would take your spot.”

”I thought that too.” Zhang Ji Xin echoed beside him.

Zheng Qing turned to look at Xiao Xiao — in fact, he also thought his scholarship was gone this year, especially because missing the practical exams due to physical reasons made him lose his biggest advantage over Xiao Xiao. And Doctor Xiao’s exam scores were daunting for the whole class.

Almost every subject had full marks.

”Being a special recruit, Xiao Xiao does not participate in the scholarship selection; you should know this.” On the stage, Professor Yao seemed to know the reason for the classroom’s noise and immediately provided additional explanation.
