Starting Off Survival With A Small Treehouse

Chapter 991: Chapter 558: Memory Manifestation

”Is this your special ability...”

Almost forgot about that!

When he first had a video call with Shi Wanyun, he asked her about this matter.

At that time, she said she didn’t have any abilities, and after that, Xu Xin didn’t inquire further.

Actually, it wasn’t that he forgot.

Rather, after experiencing the images of the Crystal Palace, he subconsciously believed that those with special abilities must have been members of that team from back then.

As far as he knew, these people had special chips implanted in their brains, which is why they possessed special abilities.

And he believed that the people from that team wouldn’t be too far from the origin of this world.

The members of the Explorers, Zeng Tao and Qin Fu, and the already deceased Yan Haoming, all proved this point.

Shi Wanyun was a survivor from District 1, quite far from them.

Since then, he had subconsciously believed that perhaps Shi Wanyun really didn’t have any special abilities, and maybe he was mistaken back then.

But now, she admitted she did possess special abilities!

And she directly revealed her ability.

”No wonder...no wonder your account was so detailed just now.” Xu Xin stroked his chin.

He recalled how Shi Wanyun had previously recited the mysterious voice’s instructions to the survivors from other districts, repeating them almost verbatim.

At the time, Lou Fei’Er was surprised by how she remembered everything so clearly.

So that’s what it was.

This ability is incredibly powerful.

It’s basically like carrying a full-range 360-degree camera that’s always on and can replay anytime.

”Now you know why I’m so scared.” Shi Wanyun looked at Xu Xin and said, ”Because when I recall, I see that monster even more thoroughly than the last time.”

Xu Xin pondered for a moment and said, ”About your ability, I have three questions.”

”Ask away, I won’t hide anything.”

Xu Xin nodded: ”First, how far back can you retrieve memories?”

If it’s just a few days ago, then it’s not as significant as he imagined.

”Since I came to this world, I’ve had this ability, and now I can freely access all memories from the moment I got this ability.” Shi Wanyun pointed to her head, ”And from my understanding of my own ability, ten years, several decades, perhaps even longer, wouldn’t be a problem.”

Is it really that powerful?

”But, actually, it’s not like you think, that all memories are in my mind.”

Shi Wanyun rubbed her temples, looking slightly puzzled.

”In fact, my memory hasn’t improved; in normal circumstances, my memory is the same as it was—I’ll forget what I should forget. Only when I use my ability do the memories get mobilized and presented in my mind, and...”

”And what?”

”And I don’t think this counts as memory; for example, it can display the scenery behind me that I hadn’t seen at the time—this can’t be considered memory.” Shi Wanyun explained, ”It should be a kind of ability, but as for how this ability came about, I don’t know either.”

Xu Xin hadn’t told her that the special ability came from a biological chip in the brain, so she still didn’t quite understand it.

But Xu Xin understood.

That indeed isn’t memory but rather a...record.

And those records aren’t stored in her brain; they’re recorded in the chip implanted in her mind.

The chip, acting as a storage device, records everything she experiences, which she can retrieve when needed.

Sort of like a dashcam?

Interesting.

As a highly advanced biological chip, its storage capacity should be immense, like Shi Wanyun said; recording for ten or several decades shouldn’t be a problem.

However, saying this...

Was Shi Wanyun a member of the team from back then?

Then why was her location so distant...

Or is there another story?

”Alright, I understand this, but there’s one more question.” Xu Xin continued, ”When you sleep...are memories recorded too?”

”Yes, they are.” Shi Wanyun nodded, ”Moreover, I’ve almost developed a habit. The first thing I do every morning is check if anything unusual happened around me while I slept.”

It’s equivalent to speed-viewing the footage of her sleep every morning.

That’s quite cautious of her.

However, in this perilous world, if Xu Xin had this ability, he’d likely do the same.

”Alright, then the third question: if I want to see your memories now, can you show them to me?”

”No... uh, I haven’t tried.”

Shi Wanyun initially wanted to deny it directly, but suddenly felt it might not be impossible.

Immediately, a slightly interested expression appeared on her face: ”Maybe it can be done? Why don’t we try it now?”

If possible, she could let Xu Xin see her fears as well.

To be honest, she’s a bit eager to see how Xu Xin would react when he sees that great terror.

This man, who has always been calm in front of her, causing her to repeatedly lose composure, how would he lose composure?
