Starting Off Survival With A Small Treehouse

Chapter 979: Chapter 554: The Reason Xu Ying Exists

”So, what exactly did you do here fifty years ago?” Li Wenxi asked as she walked with Xu Ying toward the outskirts of the city.

”More than fifty years ago, actually, for me, it’s only been a few days since I left here.” Xu Ying looked around, ”To me, three days ago I was still in the world from over fifty years ago.”

”Ah...” Li Wenxi sighed, ”What a novel feeling this is...”

”What’s so novel about it?” Xu Ying kicked a pebble underfoot, ”Not long ago, you were in the world a thousand years ago.”

”... Ah, that’s true.”

At this moment, the two were on the other side of the city, in the wilderness.

If they were on the surface, in the second half of the night, this kind of place would not be a good place. In pitch-black conditions, this kind of wilderness would surely be full of danger, making people fearful.

But in this underground world, even at this time, under the illumination of the dome crystals, it remained bright.

Li Wenxi and Xu Ying appeared to be on an easy countryside excursion.

”Actually, I’m not too sure about the important events that happened here fifty years ago, I spent most of my time playing around the city...”

”Ah? Playing around?”

”Well... because things like forming alliances and cooperation with forces over here were all done by my brother.” Xu Ying explained, ”He didn’t intend for me to get involved, and I wasn’t interested anyway, so everything went smoothly.”

”Ah...” Li Wenxi was a bit speechless, ”So basically, you didn’t participate in your plans then.”

”Of course I participated!” Xu Ying argued for herself, ”Even though I was playing, my actual task was to observe the civilian changes in this underground human settlement!”

”I didn’t just roam around this city, while my brother and those forces were doing whatever, I visited every city around here, almost all the representative cities.”

”Oh...” Li Wenxi understood, and couldn’t help but laugh, ”So you toured a lot of cities in this underground base.”

”That idea sounds a bit off, it’s more like I inspected a lot of cities!” Xu Ying corrected, ”Not just that, my brother would always update me on his situation, so even the situations of various underground forces, I was practically the second person to know.”

”Then, how did you get to know the current Patriarch of the Wei Family?” Li Wenxi asked curiously, ”Aren’t you quite close with him?”

”Of course, because fifty years ago, the person who accompanied me in inspecting human bases was him. At that time, he wasn’t yet the Patriarch, plus, since I counted as an important guest, he was responsible for my safety.”

Xu Ying said as she ran into a low shrub forest, picking wild berries from the bushes.

”Ah, so that means, the two of you traveled for a long time, visited many cities together?”

Li Wenxi’s eyes widened with interest in this topic, she eagerly asked, ”Did anything happen between you two, something like...”

”Ah?”

Xu Ying walked back towards Li Wenxi with a bunch of picked red berries, wearing a ”how could it be possible” expression, ”What could possibly happen between us, I wouldn’t stay in any time point long enough to be interested in people from that period.”

”Really not interested?” Li Wenxi doubted, ”Then why did you let him tag along?”

”Of course no interest, I let him follow because he was a guide!” Xu Ying shrugged, ”Like when you go to a place to travel, you wouldn’t stay there long enough, would you develop romantic feelings for your guide? Even if the guide is handsome, probably not.”

”No living together?”

”Living together, like what?” Xu Ying glared at Li Wenxi, ”Sis-in-law, haven’t you already had something going on with my brother?”

”Hmm...” Li Wenxi blushed.

”Ah?” Xu Ying was a bit stunned, ”Counting the time... how long have you known him? Was my brother like that before...”

”Why are you talking about me, let’s get back on topic! Judging by the old man now and his granddaughter, he must have been quite handsome back then, right?”

Li Wenxi imagined Wei Bai’s appearance from back then in her mind, speculating.

”Hmm, how should I say, he was indeed a little handsome, but he’s a bit less appealing compared to my brother.” Xu Ying handed half of the picked wild berries to Li Wenxi, ”If I were to find a guy less appealing than my brother, I’d never be able to rise in front of him, he’d laugh at me to death. I wasn’t interested in that guy at all. But he was a very good friend for sure.”

”Just good friends then.” Li Wenxi took the wild berries, ”What are these?”

”They’re the local specialty wild berries, I ate them last time I visited, Wei Bai told me about them, I hadn’t even seen them before, and they taste quite nice, give them a try.”

Li Wenxi examined the small red berries in her hand.

They felt like the redberries from the surface but much smaller, and more purplish-red.

Specially adapted underground fruits? They looked tempting, the color seemed akin to that of very sweet cherries.

She popped a berry in her mouth and bit down.

The tiny berry was succulent, and the juice burst forth instantly filling her mouth.
