Starting Off Survival With A Small Treehouse

Chapter 983: Chapter 555: Domesticated Humans (Part 2)

”What about the first batch?”

”The first batch... she doesn’t know much about them.” Shi Wanyun said somewhat helplessly, ”The number of first batch survivors is the smallest. She said she hasn’t seen many of the first survivors.”

”As the first group of humans to take root on this planet, the first survivors are basically in their seventies or eighties now, and almost all hold high positions there, so ordinary people indeed have little contact with them.”

”But according to rumors she heard, the experience of the first survivors was extremely harsh, much more so than the second, third, and fourth batches, with an absurdly high mortality rate. The humans who survived among the first batch are the elite, one in a million.”

”But because so many died, it is said that the highly intelligent beings who sent us to this world were very dissatisfied, so the activities experienced by the second, third, and fourth batches were greatly reduced in difficulty, and the number of survivors increased significantly.”

”Number 228 also said that the survivors who came later should be grateful for the sacrifices and contributions of the first batch survivors, otherwise she might have died in the survival selection long ago.”

That is to say, the survival difficulty of the first batch was very high, and the difficulty decreased for the second, third, and fourth batches.

And by the time of their fifth batch, the difficulty increased once more.

... possibly even more difficult than the first batch.

”The woman you spoke with, wasn’t she a first-batch survivor?” Xu Xin asked.

”Yes, she indeed is, but Number 228 also said that she is the only first-batch survivor she has ever seen, and she only met her after arriving at that World Tree. Before that, she even thought all first batch survivors had died.”

”...Before that?” Xu Xin asked the question that had been on his mind, ”Where were the survivors on that tree doing before arriving at the giant tree?”

”They had their own cities.” Shi Wanyun’s expression softened a bit.

”... ? Human city?”

”Yes,” Shi Wanyun nodded gently, her voice becoming softer than before, ”These survivors, starting with the first batch, have been building their own city, which is what I just mentioned, the area where humans gathered.”

Did humans build a city on the ground?

”A city managed by humans themselves?” he asked with some skepticism.

”Yes, that’s correct, it’s a city managed by humans themselves.” Shi Wanyun replied, ”Almost identical to our world, it’s a city of humans.”

”However, leaving the city is not allowed; humans are only permitted to operate within that area. Outside the city, there are groups of mutated creatures, at least mid-level, and many high-level mutated creatures. These creatures don’t attack human gatherings, but if anyone steps out of the activity area, they’ll be slaughtered by the beasts.”

This was something Xu Xin had not anticipated.

Back in the Crystal Palace, the Xu Xin in the images had told him that on Earth, after the invasion, the selected surviving humans were just slaves of alien invaders.

How could they allow a group of slaves to build and manage a city themselves?

Would they still be considered slaves?

But now, such a thing has actually happened.

Apart from the human bases underground, there is actually a human city above ground!

Why is this?

Is it to pen humans in?

Or did those alien invaders have a change of heart and want to give humans a space to survive?

”As long as survivors from the earlier batches survived, they would be gathered in that city.”

”The city is resource-rich, and besides occasional labor, there is no life pressure. The humans living in the city give birth to new generations one after another.”

”According to what Number 228 told me, in their city, the number of humans has exceeded two million. That city is the first city humans have established in this world.”

Xu Xin raised his eyebrow.

That’s quite a number.

A city with more than 2 million people would be considered quite large even a thousand years ago on Earth.

In ancient times, the capital of a dynasty would only have a population of hundreds of thousands. The conservative estimate of Tang Dynasty Chang’an City’s population was no more than a million.

And on this Earth a thousand years later, which was invaded, there is actually such a prosperous city besides the human bases underground!

Thinking about it makes sense, though.

Since the mortality rate for the second, third, and fourth batches wasn’t high, it’s indeed possible that there are quite a few humans left.

And most importantly, if the earlier survivors were all of the age of those from this batch, then reproducing the next generation was hardly difficult for them.

They were all young people aged 18 to 30, and their energy in this regard isn’t something to be underestimated. Once the life crisis was gone, they could even produce a new generation within a year, causing a population boom.

... Wait a minute.

Could the reason why surviving individuals are all from this age group be to quickly reproduce and produce more humans?

”Number 228 also said that it’s been close to fifty years since the first survivors came to this world. Those people are already in their seventies and eighties, many have become great-grandfathers and great-grandmothers, four generations living under one roof.”

”Although she hasn’t seen many first-batch survivors, she has interacted with the later generations of first-batch survivors. On that World Tree, there are several great-grandsons and great-granddaughters of first-batch survivors.”
