Starting Off Survival With A Small Treehouse

Chapter 947: Chapter 543: Humans Are Like Cockroaches_2

The ones who are managing this underground world, this world of humanity, are the most aware of how much longer it can last.

At that time, after Xu Xin and Xu Ying sent everyone underground, they specifically chose a few people who already held high positions on the surface to implement centralized authority.

Rather than simply centralized authority, the state at that time might have resembled imperial power more.

In such chaotic times, imperial power was the most suitable system. During that perilous period, when the remaining humans had just arrived in the underground world, with everything needing to be rebuilt, who cared about your human rights, equality, or freedom.

Follow the arrangements; if you’re disobedient, you die. It’s that simple.

This system has persisted up until now, meaning that today’s human rulers are basically from families that have passed down power over a millennium.

Of course, during this millennium, the ruling class hasn’t always been as satisfying to the populace as it is now; rebellions have occurred in the underground world, but because Xu Xin was still around then, he and Xu Ying crossed through many points in time and usually managed to suppress things before they escalated.

Thus, this system has continued to this day.

The continuation of this system is also to prepare humanity for returning to the surface, in the hope that one day people will see the bright sunlight again.

However, this system has its shortcomings too.

With the ruling class mainly being hereditary or through abdication, their flow of information is unbroken.

That is to say, the ruling class of this underground world knows too much.

They know the truth from a thousand years ago and are aware that the surface isn’t as terrifying as the rumors suggest; in fact, it is the place where humans should live. They know that living under blue skies and white clouds is the destiny for humanity.

Not being driven to this underground world and then just making do with it.

They also understand their mission is to one day lead everyone back to the surface!

Of course, the reason this hasn’t happened before is that previous rulers over the decades have been quite indifferent to this idea.

Like ordinary people living in this world, they were very satisfied with life here. As rulers, they could live comfortably for a lifetime; who would think about going out?

But this generation of rulers is different.

They have realized that with the currently known resources of this human base, it can’t last much longer.

In such a situation, if they are responsible, they will naturally do something for the humans living in this base.

Even if their sense of responsibility isn’t that strong, they will still have the same concerns for their family and descendants as ordinary people.

Perhaps in their lifetime, resources won’t run out, but what about their descendants...?

Are they just going to leave their descendants with a world in chaos?

Xu Ying had also considered this perspective before. Now, thinking back, the more she thinks about it, the more possible it seems.

It simply is the truth...

”If I were one of those rulers, wanting to find a way back to the surface, the simplest method would be to capture the ’divine figures’ Xu Xin and Xu Ying, who have appeared occasionally in various areas over the centuries, right?” Li Wenxi also stood up from the sofa, looking at the two statues outside, ”Unfortunately... you are not the Xu Ying who brought them here.”

...Actually, I am. I just didn’t tell you the truth because I was afraid of scaring you.

Xu Ying muttered to herself.

”Moreover, if I were them, I wouldn’t possibly put all hope on the so-called ’divine figures’ that only appear once every few decades or even centuries. I would also... try to establish contact with the surface.”

”...Contact with the surface.” Xu Ying’s expression grew somber.

This was one of the worst-case scenarios she considered.

Who on the surface could establish contact with them?

Those survivors running around like monkeys, of course not.

Then the possible contacts become obvious.

Extraterrestrial invaders!

This human ruling class, having not experienced the alien invaders’ harshness over a thousand years, might actually do such a thing!

They might naively think that the extraterrestrial invaders would negotiate with them and allow them a place to survive on the surface.

But to Xu Ying, this is absolutely a fantasy.

Completely impossible!

Having witnessed the downfall of that already-collapsed world for three hundred years, and again seeing the end of humanity in this world, she simply couldn’t believe that those alien survivors would coexist with humanity.

Even if humans are incapable of harming them, they feel disgusted and uncomfortable with humans. Apart from necessarily leaving a few behind, they want to wipe out all the humans in this world.

Their feelings toward humans are somewhat similar to humans’ feelings towards cockroaches.

Even though cockroaches rarely harm humans, even if they fall into a pot, after being cooked their protein content is six times that of beef, but...

Humans inherently feel disgust or even fear toward cockroaches.

For the vast majority of people, accepting cockroaches is impossible.

If they could exterminate cockroaches, most humans would choose to let them go extinct.

Only a very small portion of people know that cockroaches have their existential value. So they collect cockroaches, conducting a series of experiments to benefit the human race.

And to that mysterious voice, the survivors have such positioning.
