Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

”I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me,” said another sentinel. ”It looks like a child is driving the car out.”

”A child can drive?”

”I don’t know!”

While the two sentinels were puzzled, the phone in the checkpoint reception room rang.

The sentinel who answered the phone heard the urgent voice of Political Commissar Wang Zong: ”Did any of you see my car just pass by?”

”Yes! Commissar, it looked like a child was driving your car? We thought we must have been mistaken.”

Actually, they weren’t mistaken. It’s just that this kind of situation had never happened before. No one dared to imagine a child of only a few years could drive a car.

”You didn’t see it wrong! That’s Colonel Qin’s son driving the car! Where is it? Stop it! Stop it!” Wang Zhong shouted anxiously.

The car had Colonel Qin’s son in it, and if anything happened, no one could bear that responsibility.

They were just a bunch of reckless kids, but if the car hit the street and injured someone, it would be a big problem.

”But, the car has already gone far.” If they could have stopped it before, now it was too late.

The phone clicked and hung up.

The sentinel stared blankly at the phone, and a few seconds later, he hung up and rushed out, shouting, ”We’re done for! Colonel Qin’s son drove away! We failed to fulfill our duty! Now we’re all in for punishment!”

The sentinels were filled with anxiety, and Wang Zhong felt like he was being roasted over a fire; his heart was about to fry. He hung up the checkpoint phone and called the security company: ”Captain Wang? It’s Wang Zhong! My car was taken out of the compound by some kids, and the checkpoint couldn’t stop them. Hurry and bring the kids back before anything serious happens!”

”Yes! Commissar, don’t worry, we’ll bring them back right away!”

..................

It was dusk, and there were many cars on the road.

This military vehicle was driving exceedingly slowly.

Bean Sprout looked out of the window, feeling exceedingly proud.

”Chenyang, why is this car so slow? Is it out of gas? Can’t you drive faster?” Sheng Xiaoguang felt anxious as he watched the car crawl along.

Compared to this sluggish speed, he much preferred the sensation of wind-like speed.

When the car sped up, he felt a rush of excitement.

”What do you mean out of gas? I’m in first gear!” Ning Chenyang kept his eyes tightly on the road, letting the car slowly wobble along, ”Look at all these people; what if something happens if I drive too fast? It’s not just going to be a scolding from my dad and your dad then!”

”Right. The Commander has foresight.” Bean Sprout flattered.

”Foresight? You’re using that word well. I like it.” Ning Chenyang’s lips curled up in a satisfied smile, ”Who taught you that word? I don’t remember you being so articulate before?”

”Wasn’t that what they said on TV? When that dog puppet talks to the Japanese officer, he often says, ’Commander, you truly have foresight,’” Bean Sprout wagged his head and wiggled as he spoke.

”Hahaha!” Yu Ziyang burst into crisp laughter, ”Are you considering yourself the dog puppet, or are you making Chenyang out to be a Japanese officer?”

”Oh? It seems that’s what it means... But, I didn’t use the word wrong, did I?” Bean Sprout cautiously glanced at Ning Chenyang.
