I Became a Medical Genius in the 80s

Chapter 176: Chapter 175: Unspoken Understanding

The old man gave her a fountain pen, with a black and red body and a red cap. It looked very beautiful, and upon closer inspection, there was a ”Wu” character engraved on the body.

”Girl, I know you’re practicing penmanship, so I’m giving you this pen,” Wu Yuekai said.

Upon seeing the ”Wu” character, Beisitian knew it wasn’t just an ordinary pen. She didn’t refuse and accepted it.

”Thank you, old man!” Beisitian knew that perhaps this was a protective gesture towards her.

Right now, she couldn’t afford to think too much. The appearance of the Mystical Doctor Seal had disrupted her thoughts. The last time she heard the potion the old man drank was colorless and tasteless. She had thought about it briefly but didn’t dwell on it because of preconceived notions.

Thinking back now, the old man must have drunk talismanic water, and it was without a doubt that Tao Hailin was a Mystic Doctor!

However, what puzzled Beisitian was that after Wu Yuekai drank the talismanic water, it didn’t seem to have much effect.

Mystic Doctors are different from ordinary doctors, not only are their status above that of Imperial Physicians, but their skills are on a whole different level. Becoming a Mystic Doctor requires a high level of spirit and foundational medical skills, and the talismanic water they make would have a minimum standard. It would never be as ineffective as it was with Wu Yuekai.

This was also the main reason why she hadn’t suspected the Mystic Doctor!

Looking at Wu Yuekai, it seemed he knew about Tao Hailin’s matters. She didn’t know how much he understood about Mystic Doctors.

”Old man, do you know the origin of this page?” Beisitian asked.

”I don’t know the specifics, but it is closely related to my attending physician. However, he refuses to divulge more, and we don’t probe further,” Wu Yuekai replied, looking deeply at Beisitian. ”Girl, my attending doctor is a special person, both in terms of identity and medical skills. Given my status and qualifications, there’s little I can know. But I do know that while they are protected by the state, the competition and conflict within are said to be intense. I know you’re special, but you’re still young. Never be tempted by short-term gains. Some quagmires, once fallen into, are hard to escape!”

Beisitian nodded solemnly; she knew there were factional conflicts among Mystic Doctors, and they were intense. Moreover, things would only get more complicated if they involved those in power. She preferred the carefree life of a recluse.

”Don’t worry, old man, I understand the stakes,” Beisitian replied earnestly.

Wu Yuekai’s words were heartfelt, and Beisitian could feel it.

Ever since Wu Yuekai first drank Beisitian’s medicine, he had his suspicions but told no one. At that time, it was more about Luo Xudong. Luo Xudong was already in a dangerous situation, and he couldn’t bear to see his wife uneasy. Now he truly wished well for Beisitian.

So when Tao Hailin asked, Wu Yuekai’s response wasn’t entirely truthful. He didn’t reveal Beisitian’s uniqueness, and after she cured his viral pneumonia, he even restricted Li Xuejun from speaking out, not wanting Beisitian’s life to be one of unending turmoil.

Call it low awareness or selfishness—after all, he had dedicated his life to the nation. Even now, with an injured body, he hadn’t abandoned his duty. But he didn’t want Beisitian to live a life beyond her control. He could see she disliked constraints.

Because of this, the matter of military medicine gave him pause.

Wu Yuekai, seeing the topic at hand, asked, ”Girl, about what I mentioned last time regarding military medicine, what do you think?”

”If possible, it would be good to experience it. But if the day comes when I want to leave, will it be difficult?” Beisitian asked in return.

Wu Yuekai, hearing her frankness, laughed heartily, ”No need to worry about that; some procedures would be required then.”

”I’ll sort things out at home first,” Beisitian said with a smile. She had no doubts about Wu Yuekai’s ability to get her into the military.

Since ancient times, knowing the right people has made things easier, and Wu Yuekai seemed quite influential. Getting her in would be a piece of cake!

The two chatted for a bit longer, and then, seeing it was late, Beisitian left the courtyard for the town.

When she got to Jishi Pharmacy, Luo Xudong wasn’t there.

”Mr. Zhou will be back soon. Would Miss Bei like to wait for him?” Ma Xiaoling asked.

”I’ll come back later,” Beisitian said as she left, first heading to Bao Niang Embroidery Workshop and then to Wenfang Society for some calligraphy.

Feng Yunzhang was pleased to see Beisitian and welcomed her in, ”Xiao Bei, I’m planning to submit your calligraphy to a conference in Beijing. Write a piece for me, and it should be the Flower-Pinning Small楷!”

Beisitian laughed upon hearing this. It was a good opportunity. If her calligraphy were received well at the conference, she might gain some reputation, and her work could sell for a higher price in the future.

”It’s a pity you can’t leave; otherwise, go to Beijing with me, and as a woman, you’d attract more attention,” Feng Yunzhang lamented.

Coming from a rural background, and as a widow, if she traveled with a man to Beijing, she’d be unable to face society upon returning. That’s just the way it was, with societal constraints on women being significant.

Beisitian didn’t feel it was a pity. There would be opportunities in the future.

After agreeing to write a good piece of calligraphy, Beisitian left and returned to Jishi Pharmacy, where Luo Xudong was back.

”Why are you here today?” Luo Xudong was surprised. She usually came once a week, and she’d just visited a couple of days before, yet she was here again today.

”Not welcome?” Beisitian said with a smile.

”Welcome, delighted beyond measure,” Luo Xudong replied honestly.

”I’m here to ask for your help,” Beisitian didn’t hold back, saying it was about his family’s business.

”Alright,” Luo Xudong agreed without even asking.

Beisitian smiled softly, ”I plan to rebuild my house, but I don’t understand that aspect, so I’d like Mr. Zhou to help me find people and materials. The price is negotiable.”

Luo Xudong was slightly taken aback. Rebuild the house?! So, it was time to rebuild it!

His mood suddenly became a bit low. He’d let his family down too much.

”What’s wrong, Mr. Zhou? You just agreed,” Beisitian saw his expression and felt a strange twinge of heartache.

Upon hearing this, Luo Xudong raised his head, ”Leave this task to me.”

Only when a house lacks a man does a woman have to step up. Even though he couldn’t reveal his identity, he didn’t want her to worry too much.

”Okay, I’ll leave it to Mr. Zhou then,” Beisitian said with a smile.

As Luo Xudong looked at her bright smile, he always had an illusion that she seemed to know his true identity. But upon thinking, he knew it was nearly impossible!

Regardless, Beisitian entrusting this matter to him, whether by coincidence or not, he was truly grateful.

Outsiders might see Zhou Jiren’s interest in a village widow as normal behavior for him.

For someone with extensive connections like Luo Xudong, it was easy. But could his family handle it?

”I’ve got everything at home prepared. We’ll be waiting at home for Mr. Zhou’s updates,” Beisitian said.

Luo Xudong nodded, looking at Beisitian’s smiling face, recalling the soft touch of a kiss from that night.
